So far:
Bob Newby canonically knew Henry Creel.
And they killed him off before Henry was even introduced on the show.
Joyce and Hopper canonically knew Henry Creel.
And they were kept away from Hawkins in ST4, the only season where Henry was introduced by name.
Scott Clarke should know Henry Creel.
And he was suspiciously absent from ST4, the season where he’d have crucial knowledge about their serial killer.
Tumblr media
I was right. The Duffers cleared house for ST4 to create a situation where we don’t have many solid facts and most of what we hear about Henry is almost entirely unreliable.
So…who was Henry Creel? And on top of that…who the fuck is Henry Creel?

In regard to TFS spoilers, I haven’t seen too much information about Joyce, Hopper, Lonnie and Bob. Could you share some info on them? Thank you!! 🙏
Note: For those who don’t want TFS spoilers, don’t read ahead.
So the play actually starts with Bob broadcasting his own radio channel. Followed by Joyce and Lonnie talking, well mostly arguing. Joyce walks off in temper.
Apart from the start, Lonnie isn’t featured that heavily, just in the background. The main part of their story in the show is Joyce, Hopper and Bob (love triangle) exploring the mysterious animal killings in Hawkins. Bob builds them a special machine to detect the mysterious ongoings.
Joyce ultimately is trying to leave Hawkins by making a play for Hawkins High. In doing so, she’s hoping to get accepted for a scholarship and to be able to finally move away. We all know though that this fails when the play goes wrong with Henry, Patty and Brenner. So Joyce stays in Hawkins.
Near the end of the play we have an intimately setup scene of Joyce and Hopper. Joyce is working at Melvalds and Hopper walks in for a drink. He shows off his new uniform and tells her how he’s going to do his police training and therefore will be moving away for a bit. Joyce seems disappointed at him moving away. Joyce also mentions how Lonnie is “an asshole” and that he still hasn’t changed. This sets up the future storylines really. The scene really made you feel the chemistry between Joyce and Hopper.

Lucas had been to El's house a hundred times, this shouldn't have been any different. But his hands shook all the same since he had gotten on his bike earlier.
He met Max there like always. They hung out with El and Will like always. Jonathan and Argyle were cool, like always. Even so, Lucas knew that things were going to change today.
It was odd. Lucas felt anticipation, but he knew that other people on the room didn't know what he was thinking about. Max and El could honestly go him into thinking they didn't know either, with how calm they were.
But he knew that wasn't true. They had agreed the Announcement would be today. It would be easier with El's whole family there.
Jonathan's and Argyle's presence was calming. Even though their relaxed disposition was almost unnerving, they were like a reminder. That it would be okay.
Maybe over the years though, Lucas had just learned to dislike the feeling of anticipation.
In any case, El had more on the line than him. Because to anyone besides them and Max, El liked like an outsider. A girl who was dating another girl when the other girl was dating someone already, and dating two people. Not to mention there would be five members of her family present, and she would be doing the talking at first.
Lucas and Max would be fully at her side, though. Because she wasn't some outsider. She was their girlfriend, and they both loved and supported her.
El clasped Lucas's shaking hand beneath the table, as if she were the one offering reassurance. Lucas tried to still himself and gave El's hand a squeeze. Jonathan's got to the dining room and sat directly across from Lucas, next to Argyle. Those two and Will had one side, El was in the middle of the other with Max and Lucas, Joyce and Hopper were on the ends. Jonathan's eyes seemed to look through Lucas. Interrogative. But familiar. Like he'd been there before. Not just in Lucas' position, but for someone else, too. But of course Jonathan couldn't know what was about to be said. Lucas was probably just making things up. He felt even more confused.
Lucas held Jonathan's gaze, his feelings becoming hot soup in his stomach, when he was startled by stifled laughter.
Broken from his trance, Lucas searched the table for a source. He hadn't even realized who was speaking.
Will and Argyle were trying and failing to hide giggles behind their hands, Joyce was holding her composure much better. Hopper was just as confused as Lucas, by the look on his face.
Oh no.
Shit. Fuck.
We're they laughing at El?
Lucas almost fell from his chair turning it so fast to see El's face. She was trying to mimic Will's cheerfulness, but seemed worried nonetheless.
"What did you say?" Lucas asked. He probably should have asked if she was okay, but it slipped out.
Will sprung to answer. "It's okay Lucas, or was just a misunderstanding. El said that you and Max are her-" he was cut off by laughter, and Joyce lost it.
They were laughing at them! Even Jonathan's eyes were smiling now!
Max looked just as mortified where she sat. She was clinging to El's arm and not saying anything.
"Don't worry El, it's gonna be okay," Lucas started, but apparently Will wasn't finished.
"In Spanish, 'ellos' means 'those boys' but you can use it to say any group of people, including groups of boys and girls. Mom was telling her that because El started soaking Spanish with us at home, so she new to that rule."
"So when El was making her announcement," Argyle continued. "Baby Byers called the two of you her boyfriends!"
The dam broke on the nervous laughter that had been brewing in Lucas' throat.
Of course. Of course it was just a language thing. Lucas knew now that Joyce Maldonado-Hopper would never give him any reason to be afraid in her home.
That explained Hop's confusion too, since he had only recently married into this family. Though Lucas suspected he was probably actually confused about El dating two people too, but that was for another day.
Max leaned on El further and reached her hand out for Lucas to grab behind El's back since she couldn't see to look for him. "El, don't worry. I can be your boyfriend any day." She declared, grinning.
"Yeah," Lucas joined in. "And I can be your girlfriend, too."

STRANGER THINGS: THE FIRST SHADOW SPOILERS - JOYCE MALDONADO
here is a compilation of all things I can recall from the play involving Joyce Maldonado
also to note: some things I am still a little confused about and will need to verify when I see it again soon. I will update as I rememeber things!
Joyce is in charge of directing the high school's musical for the season, directing her fellow schoolmates in her version of 'Dark of the Moon'
As the play revolves around witches and teased by other schoolmates to be about 'lesbians' and sex and all things inappropriate, so they cover it to the principal (Mr Newby, Bob and Patty's father) by pretending to be performing 'Oklahoma'
You can read more about the play here: Dark of the Moon (play) - Wikipedia
She is desperate to be awarded a scholarship for theatre direction as it will be her way out of Hawkins
Her relationship with Lonnie is teased by Walter Henderson who claims she only has eyes for bad boys usually over 25 years old, emphasising their age gap and his misbehaviour
There are few scenes of the two of them to explore their relationship but it is clear he does not believe in her wanting to leave Hawkins and not so supportive of her dream about the theatre scholarship - Lonnie is seen arrested in Hawkins PD too, that bothers Joyce
Bob is said to have a huge crush on Joyce and wants to get involved with the play to interact with her and build confidence to confess, but it seems Joyce is more preoccupied with her own future and getting the play done despite the chaos around her to notice (I will do a separate post for Bob in the play, but the show really emphasises how deeply and how long he loved her, making what happens in the series even worse)
Her opinion of Hopper is that he is lazy and a womaniser and has hurt many girls with his flirtations, though we don't see any of him doing that besides to her (again, I will do another post for Jim) - their relationship throughout the play is very much teasing and underlying hints of flirtation
Joyce, Bob and Hopper end up trying to solve the murder of several pets recently - there is a reward from Claudia Henderson for finding out who killed her pet cat, something Joyce believes Hopper is only in it for rather than to do the right thing
The 'Kids' soundtrack theme plays often when Joyce, Hopper and Bob are on stage together
They are lead to the Creel house, believing Victor to be the murderer
Joyce witnesses Hopper and his father have a fight at the PD when they try and appeal for help and arrest Victor Creel - she asks why he does not stand up to him more and it seems she begins to sympathise with him more here, also as he assures it was not all about the money for him to crack the case but to help and do something good
Hopper offers to drive himself and Joyce out of town, to Mexico or someplace, away from the dull and chaos of Hawkins - we know Joyce wants desperately to leave but she turns down the offer
The pair almost kiss at one point, her hands on his chest but are interrupted by Bob (I think?)
Joyce cast Henry as the lead male principal in her play because of his chemistry with Patty, her female lead - the adults knew Henry in high school
Joyce is pleased when she hears Victor Creel has been arrested, thinking her and Hopper's warning to the PD has helped
She runs into Henry, who all believed was missing since the incident with Patty and Mr Newby at the Creel House - as Hopper and Joyce were in Russia for ST4 they do not yet know what the kids do about Henry being responsible. I can't recall the specific dialogue of this scene but it could be said Joyce has her suspicions after the very tense interaction and then what happens to Patty moments later, Henry then going 'missing' (back in the hands of Brenner) by the end
It could also be inferred that Will was taken because of this interaction, though it doesn't seem to be the intended assumption
An invited guest who runs the scholarship programme attends the play's performance, Joyce is more stressed about controlling her unruly cast but all is well until Patty's tragic accident and she loses the opportunity
It is mentioned she used to work shifts at Enzo's restaurant
Her last scene set four years later in 1963 shows her working at Melvalds, which used to be a bar/diner/hang out spot. Jim visits now in his police training uniform and explains he will be heading out for military/police training/Vietnam
it has to be said that Isabella is an incredibly powerful force in her performance of Joyce and I hope you all get the opportunity to witness it! She has the perfect energy and also sounds so close to Winona without it seeming like a forced impersonation!
