walt whitman bedene sık sık övgülerde bulunuyorsa da işaret ettiği ruhtu, o bedenle ruhu mezcetmiş, bedenin sadece ‘kanayan makine’ olmadığını düşünüyordu.

birisi ruhu mu görmek istedi? / buyur gör, kendi şeklini ve çehreni.. / bak! beden içerir ve anlamanın kendisidir, esas / meseledir ve içerir ve ruhtur.

‘’whitman’ın şiirlerini bu denli önemli kılan şudur: ‘güzelliği terden’, metafiziksel ruhu yağ ve deriden çekip çıkartmaya çalışır. filozofların yüzyıllarca yaptıkları gibi dünyayı ikicilikler şeklinde bölmek yerine, whitman her şeyi diğer şeylerle süreklilik içinde kavrıyordu.’’ j. lehter

walt whitman, şiirlerinin ‘açıkça cinselliğin, aşkın ve her daim hayvani güdülerin şiiri’ olduğunu kabul etse de, sanatının bu bedensel telmihleri ‘farkı bir ışık ve atmosfer katına yükselttiği’ne inanıyordu.

walt whitman‘ı j. lehter’in ‘’proust bir sinirbilimciydi’’ isimli kitabında ‘’hissetmenin tözü’‘ bölünde tanıştım, şiirlerinden çok onu biraz daha tanımak için aldım kitaplarını. çeviri şiirin iyisine bile tahammülüm pek olmamasına rağmen şiirlerinin bazılarını çok sevdim.
