Luke frowned and grumbled unhappily as he squinted his eyes waking up and Sebastian wasn’t in bed, something that very very rarely happened as Luke always gets up before him.
Luke and Sebastian were staying in Ellen and Jim’s house for a few days.
Luke grumbled as got out of bed and slipped on Sebastian’s shirt and stumbled out of his room and walked down the hallway and the stairs and walked into the living room and saw the front door wide open.
Luke walked out and truly wasn’t that surprised.
Sebastian was kneeled down in the dirt in the front yard with Ellen helping her plant some new flowers and move some flowers into a bigger pots.
Ellen Hughes is the only person that could get Sebastian up before the sunrises, Sebastian always is eager to help Ellen with her flowers as he loves spending the time with Ellen and it’s something he knows Ellen loves and he doesn’t mind losing a little sleep every once in a while to spend time with her.
Luke smiled softly watching as Sebastian threw his head back laughing at something Ellen most of said and Ellen was laughing just as hard.
Luke walked across the porch and sat down on the hanging swing couch and he smiled softly seeing the blanket that he knew wasn’t there last night and knew Sebastian brought it out for Luke because Sebastian knows Luke wakes up when Sebastian isn’t in bed and expected a sleepy Luke to stumble out.
Luke laid down on the swinging couch and curled up under the blanket and closed his eyes listening to sound of his mom’s and boyfriend’s laughter.
Sebastian and Ellen wiped their hands off as they got up and walked up the front stairs and they both saw Luke fast asleep on the front porch swing.
Ellen gently patted Sebastian’s shoulder and headed into the house.
Sebastian walked over and bent down in front of his boyfriend, “Baby.” Sebastian softly cooed gently shaking Luke.
Luke mumbled but he eventually squinted his eyes and saw Sebastian, Luke happily smiled and reached his arms up and wrapped them around Sebastian’s neck pulling him closer.
“Baby i gotta shower.” Sebastian laughed fondly knowing Luke wants to cuddle.
Luke pouted, “I’ll join you.” Luke tightened his grip on Sebastian having missed him especially as he didn’t get to wake up in bed with him.
“Alright.” Sebastian easily agreed and leaned down grabbing Luke and picking him up and Luke’s legs quickly wrapped around his waist as Sebastian hands stayed under his thighs.

Humming under her breath, y/n waltzed to her last round of the night with a smile. The pediatric ward was finally quiet as the young patients slept. After the nonstop buzz of activity from the emergency rooms and worried families, y/n was ready for a breather.
As she passed the nurses station, her friend Destiney looked up from updating charts on the computer.
"Last hour, huh? Well, aren't you just flying through it?" she said with a smirk. She was well aware of y/n’s eagerness to go home.
“Smooth sailing from here,” y/n agreed, giving Destiney a grin. One more hour and her long awaited couch potato plans could begin.
She was planning a weekend of clubbing with her girlfriends at the bar downtown tomorrow night. Music, getting pretty and fruity cocktails awaited her outside of these cold walls.
y/n checked the time - only 30 minutes left in her shift. Just one more patient to check on before she could call it a night. Grabbing fresh gloves and vitals equipment, she made her way to the last room on her rotation.
Knocking gently before entering, she stepped inside. “Good evening Mr. Hughes, I’m y/n, the CNA on duty,” she introduced herself warmly to the young man sitting up in bed. “I just need to get your vitals and a blood sample if that’s alright.”
The brown-haired patient flashed her a charming smile. "Well Y/N. Lucky you," he said, a self-assured chuckle punctuating his words.
"Meeting someone like me doesn't happen every day," he quipped, his soft blue eyes meeting hers as he extended his arm, waiting for her to wrap the blood pressure cuff around it.
Y/N arched an eyebrow at Jack's confident demeanor, but she couldn't deny the charm that seemed to ooze from every pore of the young man. She nodded, playing along with his game.
"I'll try not to swoon, Mr. Hughes," she replied wryly, deftly velcroing the blood pressure cuff around his sculpted bicep. She couldn't help but notice how fit and strong he looked.
As the cuff inflated and she watched the gauge, y/n added casually, "So how's your pain by the way? Any headaches, dizziness, nausea? Or just a hard head keeping you comfortable?" Her no nonsense tone made it clear she wasn't here to get swept away by his antics.
"Oh there's no pain with you around to ease it," Jack replied smoothly, his voice like velvet. He ran a hand through his artfully mussed black hair. "But maybe a four outta ten. This hard head of mine has taken worse bumps on the ice and kept going."
Y/n maintained her professional composure, ignoring the way Jack's dark brown eyes seemed to gaze right through her. Clearing her throat, Y/n jotted a quick note, acutely aware of his eyes following her every move. The sharp antiseptic scent of the hospital couldn't mask his woodsy cologne.
"Well those other concussions must have rattled some sense into you then," she said. Clearly this patient was accustomed to wrapping girls around his finger with that smooth confidence of his.
Y/n made more small talk with Jack as she worked, carefully noting down his oxygen levels, temperature, pulse rate and blood pressure in his chart. Then she swiftly drew several vials of blood, applying a cottonball over the needle mark on his vein afterwards.
“All done, you did great, Mr. Hughes,” Y/N said with a smile, labeling the blood samples neatly to send to the lab. “Buzz if you need anything else tonight.” As she turned to leave, Jack called out to her.
"Hey, Y/N," he said, a playful glint in his eye. "You know, I wouldn't mind some company tonight. How about you and I grab a drink sometime?"
"While I'm flattered by the offer, I'll have to politely decline drinks, Mr. Hughes," she responded with a quirk of her lips. "Wouldn't want to jeopardize my sterling employee record over a date with a charmer like yourself. Now focus on healing that hard head of yours."
"Will do, gorgeous," Jack replied, "But when I get discharged from this joint, drinks are still on me if you change your mind."
"Goodnight, Mr. Hughes," Y/N said with an exaggerated eye roll, unable to keep a smile from her face as she exited. That man's persistence was almost enough to make her regret having to let him down.
Almost. With a last fond head shake at his antics, she headed to finish her charts, the image of his grinning face lingering in her mind.
Y/n headed home from the hospital. Jersey roads were packed to the brim but finally she made it home. The smell of caramel and pumpkins filled her nose as she kicked off her shoes by the front door before turning on the lights.
Light meows flowed through the hallways bringing a bug smile to her face. The brown tabby cat padded up to the entrance purring and rubbing against y/n’s legs.
After her long shift, y/n was relieved to finally pull into the driveway of her home. The narrow Jersey streets had been jammed as usual for this time of evening, but she didn't mind too much.
The sight of her house with its cheerful fall decorations by the front steps was welcome after a day on her feet at the hospital.
Pushing open the door, y/n breathed deep, enjoying the warm blend of caramel and pumpkin. The aroma made her smile. Fall was her favorite time of year.
Y/n kicked off her shoes, meows filled the hallway as her brown tabby cat came padding over to wind figure eights around her ankles. "Hey sweet boy," y/n murmured, reaching down to scritch under his chin. Hugo rumbled happily, nudging his head against her hand.
After providing Hugo with a fresh scoop of food, y/n poured herself a mug of hot chocolate and sank onto the living room sofa with a content sigh. The house was quiet except for the cat crunching his kibble and the occasional passing car outside.
Y/n was halfway through an episode of Game of Thrones when her phone suddenly vibrated with an incoming text. Then another. And another. With a soft groan, she grabbed the phone to check the influx of messages.
As expected, it was the group chat with her girlfriends blowing up. They always got extra excited leading up to one of their girls night.
"Just booked our table, bitches!" Angie had texted. "Meet at my place no later than 10:30, and yes y/n I mean you" Heather added. Lexi followed up insistently, "y/n don't forget the black top I wanted to borrow!" She quickly typed out a reassurance she hadn't forgotten about tonight or the black top she knew she wasn’t getting back.
As Y/N and her friends approached the club, the frigid air gnawed at their exposed skin, sending shivers down their spines. The lines outside stretched around the building, a testament to the club's popularity on a chilly night like this.
With each step, Y/N felt the chill seeping into her bones, the biting wind tugging at her clothing as they navigated the crowded streets.
"Come on, guys, just a little farther," Ang called out, her voice buoyant despite the cold as she navigated through the throng of people with ease. "We're almost there!"
Finally reaching the promoter line, Y/N watched as Ang worked her magic, effortlessly securing their entry into the club. As the bouncer scanned their IDs, she couldn't help but feel a rush of excitement coursing through her veins, the cold all but forgotten.
They were ushered in one by one, the bouncer's practiced eye scanning each of them before granting entry.
Y/N hurried inside, grateful to escape the biting cold that nipped at her legs, her breath forming puffs of vapor in the chilly air. As she stepped into the warmth of the club, the pulsating beat of the music washed over her, drowning out the winter chill and setting the stage for a night of excitement and adventure.
She made a beeline for the bar while her friends headed to the table, eager to start the night off with a buzz. A group of guys already occupied the bar, their boisterous laughter filling the air as they bantered back and forth.
Squeezing in next to them, Y/N caught the bartender's attention and ordered a lemon drop martini, her go-to choice for starting the night off right. As she waited for her drink, she couldn't help but eavesdrop on the conversation happening beside her.
The guys were deep in discussion about hockey, Y/N watched with interest as the bartender expertly prepared her drink, her eyes flicking between the group and the skilled mixologist behind the bar. Y/N raised her glass in a silent toast to the night ahead.
With a satisfied smile, she took a sip, letting the sweet tang of the cocktail wash over her palate as she settled in to enjoy the lively atmosphere of the club.
"So, you like hockey?” The guy at the bar turned towards Y/N with a wide grin. She was caught off guard by his sudden question. "Oh, uh, well, I don't really have a favorite team," she admitted with a sheepish laugh. "I mean, I enjoy watching games sometimes, but I'm not really die-hard about it."
The guy nodded, his smile widening. "That's cool, that's cool," he said, leaning casually against the bar. "I'm a player. I play in Canada, but my friends are on the Jersey devils."
Just then, Lexi bounded up beside Y/N, her eyes sparkling with mischief as she twirled her hair flirtatiously. "Hey there," she said, flashing the guy a dazzling smile. "I couldn't help but overhear you talking about hockey. I'm Lexi, by the way."
The guy's eyes lit up as he turned his attention to Lexi, his grin widening. "Hey, Lexi," he replied, extending his hand. "I'm Quinn. Nice to meet you." They exchanged pleasantries, Y/N couldn't help but chuckle at Lexi's boldness, grateful for the distraction from her own thoughts.
Lexi's sudden interjection caught Y/N off guard, her eyebrows shooting up in surprise at her friend's audacity. "Um, yeah, we have a table," she added, her tone a bit too eager as she subtly placed her hand on the guy's bicep.
Y/N couldn't help but roll her eyes at Lexi's not-so-subtle attempt at flirting. It was classic Lexi, always boy-crazy and never one to shy away from making her intentions known.
The guy, Quinn, seemed taken aback by Lexi's forwardness but recovered quickly, a charming smile spreading across his face. "That sounds great," he replied, his gaze flicking between Y/N and Lexi. "We'd love to join you."
Y/N sighed inwardly, resigned to the fact that her night was about to get a lot more interesting with Lexi's antics in full swing. As they made their way back to the table, she couldn't help but shake her head at her friend's boldness.
The night wore on and the drinks flowed freely, Y/N felt the effects of the alcohol hit her harder than she expected. With the group of boys that had joined them, drinks were poured endlessly, laughter filling the air as they exchanged stories and shared jokes.
Quinn suggested that they all come to a Devils game next week while he was in Jersey. The other boys nodded in agreement, meanwhile, the girls exchanged knowing giggles.
When the venue lights eventually flickered on to signal the end of the evening, Quinn turned to Lexi "Hey, we should exchange numbers, for the game and all.” He asked a bit shyly, Lexi grinned before nodding eagerly as she fished her phone out of her purse, exchanging numbers with Quinn
Quinn and the guys said their farewells to Y/N and her friends. Amid plenty of smiles all around, plans were set for the upcoming hockey game. The girls excitedly piled into their Uber, eager chat filling the car. "Oh my gosh, Quinn was so cute!" Lexi gushed. "Right?" the others chorused, laughter and smiles all around.
"That Jesper was a total sweetheart.," Ang added. Y/N grinned, shaking her head affectionately at her lovestruck friends. Their lively banter continued as they reminisced over the fun night.
Y/N certainly enjoyed meeting Quinn's upbeat group, but her thoughts did stray for a moment to Jack from the hospital. Sprinkled with cheerful squeals whenever their favorite hockey team's recent match came up, the girls' bubbly conversation flowed freely the whole ride back.
Send ya girl some feedback. I feel like this part was so bad, hopefully you like it tho 😃

ophelia grace kennedy paced up and down her room, as she went through her foreign government flashcards. she was studying for her winter finals, now a senior at rutgers university in new jersey. she was getting a bachelors in international relations and a bachelors in french. ofcourse she'd go down this route, just like her family before her. it was now December 9th and her time here in new jersey would be coming to a close in a mere 6 days, before heading back to the white house for christmas and winter break with her parents. maria her roommate stormed into the room breaking the girl from concentrating and sighed. "what now?" ophelia asked, stopping in her step and watching her best friend grin. "we've been invited to a party in the city!!!" she said. ophelia growled, "yeah like my dad would say yes." she hummed going back to her flashcards. maria snatched them out of her hand, "screw the cards, screw pops and get your ass out the door in 20." she said without waiting to get a response. ophelia stood there torn, she knew she should not go but another part of her wanted an excuse to head up to manhattan. "but isn't it a 2 hour drive???" ophelia yelled out the door and maria only laughed. "that's why timmy is driving us." she hummed and ophelia cringed. maria had had a massive crush on timothy, her personal secret service agent since sophomore year. personally speaking, he was attractive; ophelia would not deny it. but she also knew she would never allow that to happen. besides, maria was always joking that timothy had a crush on opehlia and not one for maria. ophelia pulled herself into the washroom and quickly got ready.
35 minutes later the two hopped in the car that was waiting for them. "hi timmy. hi oswald." maria said looking at ophelia. "miss mendez, miss kennedy." timothy said looking through the mirror at ophelia. "good evening timothy and oswald, sorry for the last minute drive." she said honestly but he waved it off. as long as she got their safe, he didn't mind. the four drove about an hour and a half before making it to the swanky manhattan apartment. well, penthouse. "thankyou timothy." she said as oswald opened the door for the two of them. "ill be up soon." he said looking back at her and she nodded before stepping out. the three of them walked into the complex, and hurried up the elevator. "okay penthouse b." maria said looking at the text message. "and how did we get an invite?" ophelia questioned maria and maria giggled. "i might know somebody." and ophelia now smirked. "is he the one from 2 weekends ago?" and maria blushed as the elevator opened. "let me call him." maria pulled out her phone and the guy quickly picked up. "hey we are here, can you come for a moment?" she asked and the respondent quickly said yes. the three walked up to the door, and waited. oswald stood in front of the two, and the dude was shocked. "oh my god its ophelia kennedy." he said as he looked from maria. ophelia nodded softly, hating that he recognized her. "sorry." he said realizing how he was acting, and ophelia nodded. "sir, i am going to have to search the premises before miss kennedy can be let it." and ophelia sighed. "uh let me go get the owner, but that wont be a problem." and oswald nodded. the elevator dinged and timothy walked into the hall, coming up behind ophelia. "well ill leave you to it!" maria said as john pulled her inside, just as the owner came out. jack did a double take at the girl, knowing he knew her from somewhere. the secret service agents at his door, gave it away. oswald explained what he needed to do, and jack opened his door widely for them, his gaze continuously going back to the girl. "sorry about all of this." she said sheepishly, and she could feel two sets of eyes on here, making her feel small. "not a problem miss kennedy." jack said smiling. she looked up and met his eye, "ophelia." and he smiled wider, "jack." and he held out his hand. she blushed, taking a hold of it and shaking it. oswald came back out and took the first shift outside, and so timothy and her entered the penthouse after jack.
maria pulled her best friend towards the windows, shoving a drink in her hand. "thanks." she hummed quickly throwing it back. maria watched trying to hold back a laugh, as soon as ophelia finished it she went to go look for another. "don't follow me." she said to timothy who was about to follow. this was one of the few times where she demanded they let her disappear without following. "I'm not leaving." she added before walking off to the kitchen. some recognized her, 90% of the americans at least did. nobody bat an eye otherwise. she searched the kitchen looking for a seltzer or something and she smiled once she found on. "seltzer type of gal, huh?" she heard jack announce as he entered the kitchen. she stood back up from the cooler and nodded, watching as he strutted towards her and grabbed the drink to open it. smooth, she thought. "why thankyou." she smiled, and she leaned into the kitchen island. "ofcourse, you're american royalty, i might as well do my duty of being a good host." and she waved her hand in front of her. "no no, that's my dad not me. don't act any differently please. you don't have to!" she said and he nodded. "oh my god so it is true!" a tall guy said from the doorway. "if i recall we had to a project on the Kennedy family junior year of highschool and you were featured in it." the guy said causing jack to laugh at his brother's forwardness and then saw that ophelia was cringing. "that's uh that's nice. good thing we didn't do that." she smiled softly before drinking her seltzer. "oh yeah right...sorry." luke said feeling bad and ophelia just nodded. "well i should get back before one of my agents call my dad." she huffed as jack was about to say something. "who are you here with?" he asked walking out with her. "my best friend maria, who i think is seeing somebody named john. i have no idea though." she said walking towards her spot before. "oh yes! he did mention it. well at least he's american so he knows who you are and everything that comes with knowing you?" he asked and she laughed at his attempt to make a joke. "haha very funny." she smiled as the two walked up to maria and john. "such a nice place dude, thanks for letting us crash." maria said and jack nodded. "ofcourse, pleasure is all mine." he smiled looking down at ophelia briefly. "well if you need anything ill be making the rounds." he said to the group and then back at ophelia who nodded. he looked at her for a few more seconds before leaving. ophelia and maria stood side by side with john for the next two hours, getting to know him and learn more about his profession and who half these people were at the party.
ophelia found herself around 1 am walking out to the balcony that accompanied the penthouse and took in the frigid temperature. it was becoming too confined and a bit warm for her inside and this seemed like a welcoming idea. jack had been watching her all night as she interacted with john and a few others who had made their way over at some point. he took in how she laughed, how she interacted with maria but through it all she seemed guarded and somewhat closed off. but who wouldn't be when they had a pair of eyes on them at all times. he waited a few minutes after she stepped out to step out with her. "party boring ya?" he questioned as he shut the door, and she turned around and giggled. "not in the slightest, i think nico and i had a good 10 minute conversation in french so this is at the top of house parties for me." she joked as she came up next to her. "oh really?" he said quirking an eyebrow and she blushed. "john tells me that you guys are seniors at rutgers. what are you studying?" he asked looking down at her, giving her his full undivided attention. "hah, i think you can google it." she joked swirling her seltzer. "well but yeah i could, but i wanna hear it from you." he said sweetly and ophelia felt herself smile against her better judgment. "well just like every other member in my family I'm studying some sort of government. but mine is in international relations and then another major in french. i plan to work at the embassy after graduation." she explained and he felt himself smile. "my dad just about shit himself when i told him my plans. he was expecting me to do something else, let alone move to france." she added causing the both of them to laugh. "wanna run away from the u.s?" he grinned and she shook her head. "shhh my dad doesn't need to find out." she grinned leaning into him just a bit, placing a soft hand on his arm. "your secret is safe with me." he whispered grinning, and she recognized it as a sincere one. one that made her warm inside. "say, have you ever been to a hockey game?" he questioned, her hand not leaving his arm as they turned towards one another. she shook her head no, "oh wait! i did go to the 2018 stanley cup playoffs when my dad was a senator!" she said remembering now. "or whatever year it was." she laughed uncertainly. "i think you're right, but you and maria should come to our next game in two days." and she sighed. "good thing I'm done with finals then." she said through somewhat gritted teeth, knowing that she would not be going home as decided by her dad but she'd be staying in jersey just a bit longer. against his wishes ofcourse. the sliding door opening but she didn't move back from jack. "hey girl, we are going. timmy's being an ass." she said before timothy came into view and ophelia sighed. "well thankyou for the invite and a great party, jack." she smiled. he nodded, "ill make sure john gives maria my number so we can situate the ticks." he said and she nodded before walking back inside.
ophelia threw her overnight bag into the fire escape as maria watched from the ground. two floors up and ophelia could put her fear of heights away and hop down. she grabbed her second phone and walked down. the two looked at one another, as if to say 'are we really doing this?". ophelia grabbed maria's hand and pulled her towards the uber that was waiting for them. she had had enough of the two agents for two years and decided that she wanted to ditch them. besides, she had had a lovely argument this morning with her dad which untimely led to her hanging up one him; not wanting her to stay longer in jersey after her last final that early afternoon. so, this was going to work or not work, she didn't know but that was thrown out the window as the two sped off towards newark. maria texted john that the two were on their way there, and to not say shit to anybody besides jack. nobody could know they were coming. "lets hope this works and i don't get shot in the process." ophelia said shutting her eyes. "lets hope it does work." maria said squeezing her best friends hand.
the two drove into the underground parking garage and saw john waiting for them with jack. the two hopped out and maria quickly hugged john. "hi jack." she said sheepishly and he smiled, pulling her in for a hug. "where can we put our stuff?" maria questioned the two and john smiled beginning to walk the four over to the car. "thanks man, appreciate it." ophelia said. "wheres the entourage?" john asked shutting his trunk and maria smiled. "she ditched em for the night!" she cheered, throwing her hands up in the air. "hahaha. funny." ophelia said rolling her eyes. "lets just go before people see us." ophelia said pulling the three back towards the door. "lets get margaritas!" maria said as soon as the two were alone on their way towards a box that was filled with executives for the team and one that was smaller so they could blend in easier. "fine, only one though." ophelia hummed.
the game was in full speed an hour later, and opehlia found herself enjoying it immensely. oh, how she adored grown men throwing each other around, searching for the tiny black object on the ice. she made note to go to more hockey games because they were entertaining. she shamelessly watched jack throughout the night, feeling her attraction towards him grow. she hadn't been able to get him out of her mind for two days and this was only going to add to it.
and throughout the night, she thought not once of the outside world and who might be looking for her. back at the whitehouse, her parents were terrified of what could have happened. agents and police personnel on high alert throughout the east coast. she knew ultimately she shouldn't have done what she did, but now it was done. the game went a little too quickly for her liking, and the two stayed back in the box waiting for the two guys to come out. john had the idea of ordering in and the four of them hanging at jacks penthouse for the evening. the two came in with one trailing behind them as he was on the phone with somebody. "great game guys!" ophelia said smiling widely, feeling the two margaritas pulsing through her veins. "oh my god, she was loving it! she was so into it it was so funny." maria said laughing at the fact that she misread a call and got upset about it. "hey, its not my fault the dudes microphone went out." jack and john picking up on the situation. "ill need to hear more, but should we get going?" jack questioned and the two nodded. the five of them headed out towards the two cars, "wanna ride with us? were going straight to my place. they are picking up chinese." and ophelia nodded. "i swear to go if timmy or oswald or your fucking father call me one more time, i'm gonna scream." maria said as she turned on her phone. she flashed ophelia her phone and saw 35 missed calls. "turn it back off, they can track it." ophelia said and maria nodded.
jack and luke watched as ophelia grew quiet, as soon as they entered the car. "do they not know youre here?" luke asked and ophelia nodded. "oh god, please tell me were not gonna go to prison for harboring the presidents daughter?!" luke panicked.
it was around 1 am after many boxes of chinese take out and a comedy movie, they were all exhausted. maria and john moved to his place on another floor offering ophelia to come with them, but she said she wanted to finish the movie. luke headed to bed after they left, and so now it was just jack and her. "so why did you not tell them you were going out?" he questioned, turning towards her on the couch. their knees brushing one another for a split second. she sighed, thinking of what reasons he was going to give. "i wanted to be normal again just for the evening. i wanted to have a good time without feeling my agent's eyes on me at all times, you never feel alone. ever." she said looking at jack in the eyes. "did you feel normal?" he asked and she smiled softly taking in how his eyes softened as he looked at her. she took in how comfortable she felt in his presence and the warmth that he oozed, "i do now." she hummed before closing the small distance between them by pressing her lips to his. it caught him by surprise but he melted into it, finding the base of her back quickly; his arms wrapping around her. their bodies quickly not getting enough of one another, jack pulled them down the hall to his room. making the most of her night of freedom.
it was around 5 as the two found themselves wide awake talking, laughing, kissing, and falling for one another. jack pulled her closer to his chest, not wanting this moment to end. "when do you come back?" he questioned and she shut her eyes. "the 7th, i start classes the 10th." she said. he nodded, "how about we do something during my by week in feburary?" he questioned and she smiled. "its a good thing my classes are all online. ill talk to my mom and have her convince my dad." she hummed looking up at him. "its a good thing, she's got a soft spot for me." she hummed before pecking jack again.
as the two were starting to fall asleep, their breathing already mimicking one another they heard a big boom at the frontdoor. more like a crash. she quickly sat up in bed, pulling the blanket to her chest, gathered her discarded clothes and slammed the bathroom shut, locking it behind her. she knew who was here. "ophelia?" jack questioned as the master bedroom opened, to reveal timothy. jack threw his hands up, as more agents filled the room. "jack?" he heard luke call out, as they pushed him into he hallway. jack sighed, knowing his brother was ok. "is she in here?" timothy asked pointing towards the bathroom and jack nodded, apprehensively. "i swear to god if you touch the door, you'll regret it." she yelled, knowing he was about to or at least attempt to open the door. she slid on her socks and stood up, taking in her appearance. she sighed stepping out of the washroom, timothy inspecting her to make sure she was not harmed. "im fine, tell him oswald." she said looking at her most trusted person in the world, who nodded. "you're dad will be happy to hear we found you but he wont be happy where." timothy said grabbing her arm and began to walk her out. "let go of me!" she screeched, ripping her arm from him. she'd never seen this side of him and she did not like it. they made it to the front door and saw maria standing outside with john, "can i at least say bye?" she asked looking at timothy. he looked down at her, knowing that if he did so, there would be no chance with her selfishly. he'd been battling two years of feelings and knew she was slipping from his hands. he sighed, and nodded. "alone." she added and timothy sighed again nodding for the agents to get out. as soon as they did, closing the broken front door behind them she turned around. "im so sorry, i didn't think they'd come here." she said panicking. jack shook his head, "no no, don't worry. you didn't know." jack said softly putting his arms around the girl. he rubbed her back, "yknow id still like to see you after you get back." he said and she smiled. "didn't scare you away?" she questioned and he smirked. "not even close." he said before quickly pecking her. timothy opened the door, letting her know air force 1 was ready. "bye jack." she said before walking out and past timothy. she gave maria a quick hug before she was whisked away.
jack hadn't stopped thinking of the girl as christmas rolled around, and the texting the two did was nonstop. the two could not get enough of each other, respectfully. ophelia was a wreck as she was locked away in her ivory tower, not daring to speak to anybody but oswald or her most trusted assistant. the president took notice of everything, and i mean everything. he would go up to the personal quarters for the family throughout the day and would hear his daughter laughing, talking in hushed tones and sadly, sobs. she was only allowing oswald and her assistant to see her, as she didn't want to be anywhere near her parents. with the reprimanding he did once she got back, he understood. but he knew the history of the family and his panicking was warranted. theo kennedy walked towards his and his wife's bedroom to talk, he needed to confirm his suspicions. "is she really seeing that hockey player?" he said and his wife was taken back. "uh...i believe so. at least that's what kelsey said. the two haven't stopped talking since the night she was found. well actually before that too." she responded, and he nodded sitting down at the edge of the bed. "would it be wild to invite him to the christmas party?" he questioned and his wife smiled. "are you getting soft?" she smiled coming up behind him and wrapped her arms around him. "i think that ship sailed years ago." he huffed and she laughed. "she's our only child theo...don't push her too far and give her reasons to never come back." his wife whispered. "i get she messed up and made a dumb mistake, but we both know either one of us would have done the same in her position." and he knew his wife was right. they both would have done it. "ill let kelsey know." he announced, standing up and walking out.
though kelsey never told ophelia, knowing it would be a lovely surprise for her. ophelia smoothed down her silver dress that donned a bow at the back of her neck. kelsey inspected her hair and makeup, smiling at how perfect it was. "you ready?" she questioned and she nodded. she walked out of her room in what seemed like days. oswald smiled down at the girl, putting his arm out for her. she smiled looping her arm in his. "absolutely beautiful miss ophelia." he hummed and she smiled widely. "thankyou oswald." and the two were on their way downstairs. "ill be right down there, take your time." oswald said stepping aside and walked down the grand stairs that would lead them to the grand room where the party was. she sighed running her hands down her dress once more, as kelsey fixed the bow that went down halfway revealing the rest of her back. "knock em dead, sis." she smiled and ophelia nodded. she needed a drink, and pronto. especially after the amount of pictures that were going to be taken as she made her entrance. she rounded the corner and stood for a brief few seconds at the top looking down at the groups of people mingling about. oswald nodded at her, speaking into his earpiece. she slowly stepped down the stairs hoping to not fall flat on her face. as she looked around briefly at the people realizing she was walking down, she caught a familiar face. scratch that, four. and then it was as if more and more kept popping up. she whispered to oswald that she was going to greet the group of people, and as she looked over, she saw jack already making his way over. "ofcourse miss ophelia." oswald said standing back into position. "hi jack." she smiled widely, pulling him in for a hug. "hi opehlia." he whispered, a bit stunned by the forwardness. "what are you doing here?" she questioned pulling him to the side of the stairs. he shrugged, "your dad called me four days ago and asked me if i wanted to come. and that i could invite anybody i wanted to-to come along." he said and he saw the confusion wash over her features. "he did?" she asked in disbelief and he nodded. "is it too soon?" he asked growing nervous, and she shook her head quickly. "oh no! not at all, I'm just stunned a bit that's all." she said smiling widely. "I'm really glad that you're here jack, truly." she said inching closer to him. "ill meet up with you guys soon, i need to find my dad." she said and he nodded, placing a kiss to her cheek. her cheeks became crimson red, jack noticing immediately. she watched as he walked back towards the group, and then she slipped into a secret door towards the oval Office.
"ophelia!" she heard her name from behind and she knew who's it was. she stopped to look back and saw timothy walking quickly down the desolate hallway. "yes?" she questioned, and she saw that he was upset. "what is that guy doing here?" he asked and she was taken back a bit. "why does it matter to you?" she huffed, before starting her descent again. he grabbed her arm and pulled her back. "are you two together?" he asked and her face became stern. "why would it matter to you, huh?" she spat while yanking her arm back. "why would it? have you not recognized anything?" he asked and he saw confusion wash over her. "what-what are your talking about timothy?" she asked growing irritated. "you musn't think that everything I've done for you has been just for my job. you really don't think that right?" he questioned searching her eyes. she shook her head, "timothy-" he cut her off. "have you not realized my feelings for you?" he asked and she felt dread wash over her. "oh fuck no, this isn't happening." she said taking a step back, putting her arms out to create distance. "don't go do this route timothy, please." she begged but he shook his head. "ill put in my notice, then then-" she cut him off. "if you think that i have feelings for you, you are certainly mistaken. what the actual fuck, timothy? don't follow me" she ordered, beginning to walk towards the oval office. she made it to the office, and shut the door behind her. her dad was at his desk, going over some last-minute items. he quickly looked up and was shocked to see his daughter back in the very room he berated her a week back. "first thing's first, please get timothy off of my service. secondly, you invited jack?" she said walking up towards his desk. he sat back in his chair smiling, and nodded. "okay." he said nodding towards his agent behind him and the agent left the room. "i had to meet the guy who's had nonstop communication with my daughter." he said and she softly smiled and then it dropped. "was it to make amends?" she said quirking an eyebrow and he laughed. "you're mother is quite the convincer and knows how to fix situations. good thing she's in my corner and nobody else's." he said and she nodded, knowing full well the angel (and devil) that she was. she sat down in front of her dad. "i do really like him, i think you'll like him too." she smiled and then there was a knock on the door. oswald appeared with her mom and somebody else. jack walked into the room nervously looking around, and then he found ophelia. he instantly calmed down, and she smiled widely.
"so you must be jack." her dad said standing up and jack swallowed hard, putting out his hand for him to shake. "ye-yes, jack hughes." he said nervously. "hear you're a pretty good hockey player, jack." her dad said and jack shrugged. "i'm alright." and ophelia smiled at his modesty. "heard you're good enough to make the olympics team and represent our great country." and jack was confused looking over at ophelia. "he loves hockey." ophelia said and her dad chuckled. "yes, nhl network is always on. just recently caught a segment on international play coming back so that's why I'm excited for 2028!" he explained walking back to his desk and shutting the small desk lamp off. ophelia made her way over towards jack and straightened his bowtie. "calm down, you're fine." she whispered for just him to hear. jack watched as he did so, a feeling of calm washing over him.
"who'd you bring tonight?" her dad asked breaking their trance with one another. "uh my parents, brothers, and a couple teammates." he said sheepishly, "great! we get to meet the parents, hun." her dad mused as the two walked out in front of them. ophelia rolled her eyes, "he hasn't been this excited in a few years i apologize in advance." she hummed and he smiled, holding out his arm for her. she looped her arm in his, and the two walked out.
the two made their way up to the personal quarters for the family a few hours later, showing him around the white house for a personal tour. "and this here is my room." she said sheepishly allowing him to walk in. she shut the door behind them and started to pull off her earrings that were beginning to throb. jack turned around halfway to see what she was doing, and she was making her way back towards him. he wrapped his arms around her, pulling her inclose and rested his chin on her head. "thankyou for coming tonight, I'm so glad that you did." she smiled. "ofcourse, i had to see the girl im absolutely mad about." he hummed, and she felt her heart swell. "and where she got her snooty attitude." he added joking and she rolled her eyes. "haha very funny." she said pulling back a bit to look up at him. "will you be my girlfriend?" he asked off the cuff and she threw her head back laughing. "points for throwing me off guard, but yes. i would love to be your girlfriend." she hummed and he smiled widely. he closed the space between them, placing his lips on hers. ones that tasted like whiskey and the comforting smell of sandalwood and cedar plagued her nose. she began to untie his bowtie, and as soon as it was undone she began to push him back towards her bed. she giggled as he fell back upon the bed, not knowing it was as close as it was. "oops." she said placing a hand on her lips. he smiled, pulling her to his chest, not being able to get enough of her.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: This wasn't how you were meant to meet John's daughter.
Pairing: John Marino x Fem!Reader // John Marino x Ex!Fem OC (Ginny) <- only important for all of ten seconds
Requested: No (Requests Are Open)
Warnings: 18+, minors dni, nsfw for the first half, single dad!john, soft dom!john x sub!reader, dirty talk, pet names (pretty girl, good girl...), a little bit of hair pulling, fingering, oral (female receiving), interrupted morning sex, not edited
Notes: uhh...hi, this is my first time writing for john, not sure if i've done him justice, or if its any good, but this idea sort of comes from a dream i had the other week. anyway, i hope you liked it, feedback is always appreciated
Tumblr media
"You're killing me here, pretty girl," John groans, hands pushing your knees apart, looking at you all splayed out for him on the mattress. You push up onto your elbows, watching his wild eyes drink you in, licking your own lips as he licks his, the corner slightly elevated at seeing your wetness glistening in early golden rays of sunlight. "Is this all for me?" He asks, brushing his thumb through your folds, grazing your clit at the top of his stroke.
You shiver at his touch. "Please, don't tease me," you beg, desperate and needy for him. Your head shakes from side to side, a whimper spilling from your lips as he repeats his last movement, slowing down as he brushes over your clit. "Please, John," you whine, squirming your hips, bucking them up off the bed, "I'm too tired to be teased."
"Just a little more," he whispers, stroking his fingers through your wetness, his cock twitching as he sinks one finger inside.
He bites his bottom lip, swallowing a groan, watching his finger withdraw from the tight warmth of your cunt. All mine, he thinks, sliding his finger into his mouth, moaning at the taste of you.
"So tight," he murmurs, pulling his finger out with a pop, the corners of his mouth twitching into a smug grin, "guess I need to stretch you out some more."
He adds a second finger, your elbows giving way and your back collapsing onto the mattress as your eyes close shut. His movements are slow, dragging his long fingers along your walls, curling to reach the right spot. And you whine loudly to voice your protest, pulling an amused chuckle from out of him, the sound vibrating across you like electricity.
"Johnny, please-!" Before you could finish, he lowers his mouth onto your heat, lapping and swirling his tongue against your clit. Your thighs lock around him and your back arches away from the bed, a loud moan ripping from the back of your throat. "Fuck," you breathe out, trying to catch it before another moan escapes. You fist one hand into his hair and tug on the dark curls, "don't stop."
The corners of his mouth twitch, his grin pressed against you. "Never would," he mumbles, wrapping his lips around your clit, sucking so hard that you squeak.
He glances up, finding your free hand pinching at one of your nipples and groans, rutting his hips into the mattress, seeking some much-needed friction against his steely length. "Good girl," your clit leaves his mouth with a pop and he stays watching you, keeping his hips grounded, "keep playing with yourself like that."
You do as he says, rolling your nipple between your thumb and forefinger, hissing inwards as you pinch and twist the sensitive nub.
"John." You tug on his hair, managing to pull him away, whimpering as he removes his fingers, leaving you to feel empty. "You" you stutter, releasing his hair, "I need you."
He crawls up to meet you face to face, kissing his way up your body, following the curve of your body with his hands. To him, your body was like one of those marble statues, created and shaped to perfection, and something he always wanted to step back and admire for hours. He dips his head into the crook of your neck and softly nips at your skin, soothing the sting with a flick of his tongue.
"You need me?" He asks, coming to eye to eye with you. You nod, unable to force an answer out. "Then have me," he whispers, before sinking to meet your lips.
His hand comes to rest on the side of your face, his thumb caressing your jaw as his tongue finds the seam of your mouth. You sigh, parting your lips for him, tasting yourself on his tongue whilst it teases you.
He breaks away, distracted and chuckling as your hand strokes down his chest. "Where are you going?" He asks, pressing his forehead against yours, angling his chin down to watch your hand disappear.
You smile, biting your bottom lip. "Nowhere."
He gasps, hissing into a groan as you softly stroke your fingers over the crown of his cock. "Nowhere, huh?" He bites his lips, squeezing his eyes shut and bucking his hips to meet your slow jerks.
Abruptly, you stop, ripping your hand away like you have touched something hot, nudging John away as he buries his face against your neck, asking why you had stopped.
"John, stop," you mumble, something over his shoulder catching your attention. You push up onto your elbows and watch the bedroom door handle jiggle once and then a second time.
Someone was trying to get in.
On the third attempt, John finally looks over, nearly falling off the bed as he rolls to your side.
"Stay," he mumbles the command like he's ordering about a dog. You sit up and pull the covers tight against you, watching John dress in a pair of old gym shorts, the Devils logo faded from repeated cycles in his washing machine. "It's probably just the-"
The door swings open on the fourth try, revealing a small four-year-old, dressed in baby pink dungarees. "Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!" She shouts, her pigtails bopping as she bounces excitedly. She waves one hand in the air and smiles brightly up at him.
"Wheezie?!" He nearly trips over one of your heels from last night. "What are you-" He takes a deep breath and straightens up, a soft blush appearing on the tops of his cheeks. "What are you doing here?"
Your face burns with embarrassment. This was not how you wished to meet Eloise Marino, naked and in her daddy's bed.
She ignores his question, her tiny arms swinging by her side as she tilts her head, a big round pair of eyes staring at you with curiosity. "Who are you?"
"Uh..." Your voice trails off, your eyes darting to John for help.
"Wheezie-"
"I really wish you would stop calling her that!" Another voice enters John's apartment, filtering in from the hallway, whom you assumed belonged to John's ex and Eloise's mom. "Her name is Eloise, not 'Wheezie'." She says the nickname with disgust, appearing at the door with her nose wriggled and pointed off to the side. "Is it really that hard to call her the name we picked?"
You picked, John wants to say but rolls his lips together, deciding not to pick a pointless fight with Ginny. Instead, he glances at you, checking on you, giving you a small comforting smile as he watches you slowly try and hide yourself further under the covers.
His ex looks at you in horror, throwing a hand quickly over her daughter's eyes. "Very classy, John," she tuts at him, giving you one last look of disgust before ushering Eloise out.
John waits until they've gone. "I'm sorry," he apologises, walking until he feels his knees hit the bed's footboard. He fists his fingers through his hair, leaving the top dishevelled, and releases a frustrated sigh. "I promise you she's not meant to be here," he looks at the door and then back at you, "she's meant to be with Ginny this weekend."
You shake your head and give him a nervous smile. "I was going to have to meet her at some point."
"But only when you were ready," he counters, the corners of his mouth turning down into a frown.
"John, it's fine," you lie, taking your hand and rubbing it against your chest, thinking it could magically rub away the nerves. He arches his eyebrow, not believing you for a second. You give him another smile. "Go," you wave your hand, shooing him out of the room, "go see what's wrong and I'll just wait in here. You know, gather what's left of my dignity."
He chuckles, the soft sound calming you. "Okay," he comes to the side of the bed, scooping you up an old t-shirt and quickly kisses your cheek.
You drop your head into your hands and shake your head. "Is there really no one up there looking out for me?" You speak out loud to yourself, before pulling the t-shirt over your head, feeling less embarrassed now that more of you was covered.
Kicking off the covers, you swing your legs over the side and move quickly across the room, finding yourself a pair of John's shorts or maybe even a pair of his boxers. Just anything to cover your lower half with.
"This is meant to be your weekend with her."
You stop at the door, your head craning just enough around the door to see John and his ex standing at the end of the hallway. John had his arms folded across his chest and his back turned to face you.
His ex flicks her straight blonde hair over her shoulder and turns her head, her piercing grey eyes narrowed in your direction. Taking a step back, you hold your breath, hoping she hasn't seen you.
"Doug wants to take me away for the weekend," was all she had to say.
John scoffs. "Brilliant. And what have you told Wheezie?"
"Eloise," she snaps, correcting him. Her voice rises to a higher pitch to be heard over him. "Her name is Eloise. And she'll be fine - it's just one weekend."
"And it was just one weekend with Richard too," John bites back, doing his best to keep his voice down. Skipping a weekend wasn't a one-time thing you could only assume, shaking your head, feeling an unexpected sense of sadness. "You get her two weekends of the month, Ginny," John stresses, and you take another peek around the door to see him pushing his hair back.
"And? Am I not allowed to have relationships?"
"That's not what I'm saying-"
"What was I meant to do?" She talks over him, refusing to hear what he has to say. "Tell Doug no?"
John fidgets on the spot and drags his hand down his face. "Yes," he replies, irritation lacing his tone. His answer was short and straight to the point, but she didn't seem to get it.
She rolls her eyes and waves her hand to dismiss him. "Well, she's here now, and Doug is waiting for me outside, so you better say goodbye to your little puck bunny in there." She gestures to his bedroom.
"Don't call her that."
"What?" She scoffs, laughing at him. "You can't expect me to believe she's something serious? Eloise didn't even know who she was."
"Maybe that's because it takes me longer than a week before I think about introducing someone new to her," he deadpanned, refolding his arms back across his chest. Ginny looks startled, her already rouged cheeks turning darker. "Y/N is serious," he continues, and you smile from behind the door, "but we were waiting until she was ready to meet Wheezie, which you've ruined by pulling this little stunt."
Ginny's voice becomes nothing more than background noise as you feel a soft tug on the end of your t-shirt. Looking down, you find Eloise staring up at you, her eyes a mirror image of John's. "Hi," she smiles, two dimples popping out. She twirls one of her pigtails around her finger.
Bending down, you return the smile. "It's Wheezie, right?" She nods her head, the other pigtail swinging back and forth. "It's nice to finally meet you, I'm Y/N. I'm..." Gosh, this was new for you; how were you meant to tell a four-year-old that you were her daddy's girlfriend without actually saying it? "I'm friends with your daddy," you settle on, deciding it was the easiest for her to understand.
"A friend?" She tilts her head. "Like Uncle Luke?"
"Well..."
"Y/N is my special friend," John suddenly appears behind her, lifting her onto his hip with one arm. He gives her a messy kiss on the cheek and she squeals, quickly wiping it away with the back of her hand. "My very, very special friend."
"Like Doug?" She asks, looking at him for an answer.
"Like Doug," he repeats, nodding his head.
He glances at you, watching you straighten up, before extending his other arm. Your overnight bag hangs from his hand, and you take it from him with a half-smile.
"I missed you," he whispers to Eloise, turning his attention back to her.
"You saw me yesterday," Eloise giggles, wrapping her arms around his neck.
"I know," he nods, groaning as he continues, "but yesterday was so long ago! I was beginning to forget what you looked like." He nuzzles his face into her chubby neck and jolts back, wriggling his nose up and pinching the end. "Have you always smelt that bad?"
She giggles some more, squealing, "silly Daddy!"
John looks at you and then back at Eloise. "So," her pigtails bounced as he adjusted her on his hip, a soft groan escaping as she pokes her finger against his jaw, "what are we doing today?"
You arch your brows. "We?"
"Yes," he smiles, looking once more at Eloise, who was pulling one of her pigtails forward, trying to look at her hair. You roll your lips, but you can't hide your smile as you watch the joy of childlike wonder fill her expression. "Me, you," he snaps your attention back to him, just in time to see him nod at her, "and her."
You grip your overnight bag tighter and shrug your shoulders. "I don't know, what are we going to do today?"

player using nicknames in their dialogue over “y/n” (baby/sweetheart/love)
if an author has an old work they and other people love would love a revisit especially if a player has since been traded or injured or even retired love to see where old relationships have gone in a one shot
I would love to see fics break away from the mould of traditional romance novels! I'm not a fan of third act breakups or other unnecessary issues for the sake of plot, and I think there are a lot of ways to write a good story without those elements and would love to see the creativity that comes from exploring alternatives!!
Angst and make-ups that don’t end in sex. I like that there’s other ways to makeup. Also good communication!! As someone who has never been in a relationship, good communication is great for me to like start to understand what a healthy relationship could look like
would love to see more enemies to lovers without someone being embarrassed or humiliated so I guess more rivals to lovers where there's a mutual respect but you still don't like them until one key moment, friendship dynamics with the other players on the li team, moving to a new city and meeting the player by happenstance in like a grocery store or coffee shop, soc-med team x player, first person they meet outside their organization after being traded

Psssst, it’s me! Your fic exchange writer! I hope you are as excited as I am for your fic! I have a couple quick questions for you so I can get started.
Love the list of players you have! Any chance you could give me a top 3? As a refresher, here is your list of gorgeous men: Andrei Svechnikov, Adrian Kempe, William Nylander, Josh Anderson, Brock Boeser, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Erik Johnson, Anthony Beauvillier, Nico Hischier, Colton Parayko, Mat Barzal, John Marino, Quinn Hughes, Elias Petterson, K'Andre Miller. (Can you see why I need you to narrow it down!? Your taste is excellent.)
Are there any songs or lyrics or quotes you love that you would like to see put into your fic?
If you do Spotify wrapped, what are two songs on there that fit your vibe?
What are the themes that have you kicking your feet? What themes would you be bummed out to receive?
Do you prefer reader-based fics or OC? If so, do you have a name preference?
You will be getting a happy ending! But would you perfect for it to be a full comfort fic, or have some angst to it as well?
hiii!! sorry this is a little late response 🫣 i am super duper excited though!!
I'm going to hide the answers under a read more so as to not bother people!
As a top three, I would probably choose (in no particular order): Andrei Svechnikov (I just adore him more than words can say), I am in my William Nylander era and because John Marino is new to my list this time around, I'll go with him!
Oooh I can definitely offer up some kind of input there but feel free to literally ignore it entirely. I do enjoy the whole vibe of At My Worst by Pink Sweat$ and Kehlani but also love Kodaline's Wherever You Are or these lyrics have recently struck a chord with me recently "I'm not a solider/But I'll fight through our darkest of days/Get on my shoulders/And I'll carry you all of the way" and also "I wanna slow dance in the living room like/We're eighteen at senior prom and grow/Old with someone who makes me feel young"
I don't do Spotify wrapped but I do use apple replay so hopefully that's fine for you as well! For this year: I think my vibe has been either anthemic or angsty so I'll give you one of each ahah - I'm Still Standing by Elton John and Unsteady by X-Ambassadors.
Anything Friends-to-Lovers/Idiots-to-lovers/the whole Requited-Unrequited Love thing gets me giddy all the time. Oh and how could I possibly forget Fake Dating. I'm a true hopeless romantic at heart so honestly if it could fit into the plot of a 90s/early 00s Rom-Com, it'll make my little heart sing. I really dislike miscommunication(in the sense of people not talking to each other - lost in translation/communication is okay). I'm not a big fan of pregancies (I prefer fun aunt/uncle/cousin vibes) but apart from that I'm not going to lie I'm pretty open, so long as it makes sense.
I like both honestly so I'm going to say it's up to you and what you're most comfortable with (I don't want to handcuff you too much) but it you want a firm response just let me know.
If it's 100% a happy ending, I don't mind a little bit of angst thrown in, you know - for character/dynamic development but I also would't be opposed to snuggling up with a cup of cocoa and the most wonderful piece of comfort prose to just destress a little.
I feel like I half answered a lot of your questions but please if anything is unclear and you need more clarification or you just want me to be decisive for once, let me know ☺️

"Mail, getcher mail here!"
An unfamiliar voice, though one among many of such a kind, catches the replacements' attention. They look from where they're trying their best to fit in with the Normandy veterans. That's a woman's voice. Spotting the speaker isn't a hard undertaking, as she's waving letters above her head, but getting to her is another matter: she's swarmed within seconds by Toccoa men, and the newer arrivals hesitate. Is it their place to press through the crowd, clamoring for their mail with the others?
They don't have to question for long, as Lieutenant Welsh ushers the replacements forward after a couple of minutes, insisting they take a look. The young woman, dressed in a paratrooper's uniform and gear just like all the men, is shooing away a bickering pair of sergeants. She turns to the newcomers with a smile on her face, and they're all glad to see the way she doesn't hesitate to greet them just as cheerfully as anyone else. Her gaze sticks on one person in particular as she glances them over, and now, she tilts her head at him.
"Hey, you Heffron?"
"Um..." The man in question taps his foot on the ground, surprised she knows his name. Is that a good or bad thing? "Yes."
A smile breaks across her expression, revealing a charming gap between her two front teeth, and she shuffles through her bag for a moment. "Thought it might be you." At the confused look he gives, she chuckles. "I've got a knack for putting names to faces before meeting 'em. Prob'ly why they made me a mail carrier." A letter appears in her hand- “Knew it was near the top o’ the lot.” -and she holds it out to him. "Nice nickname, by the way."
With a wink, she's turned away toward the other replacements. He didn't even catch her name. Glancing at the letter, he sees it's addressed to 'Babe', and he gives a small smile. He knows exactly who this is from. Leaning against a nearby fence, he slits open the letter, starts to scan it, and quickly, his expression is no longer gladdened. One of his fellow replacements leans over his shoulder to see and he gives a groan to see the contents of the note.
"Ooh, tough luck, buddy."

It's a real swell time at the pub in Aldbourne tonight. There's a game of darts in full swing, everyone's got a drink in hand, and Kathleen Marino is ready to socialize after a long day of chasing down her fellow Easy Company soldiers to deliver them their mail. Sure, she knows she gets picked for jobs like that all the time because she's a woman, but she doesn't mind much anymore. It's a nice break from night patrols and dreary watches. As she sips on a cold beer, her fingertips leaving a mark in the condensation of her glass, she taps her littlest finger against it and points with the same digit across the room.
"Well, someone got his Dear John."
Indeed, the redheaded replacement is leaning his chair against the wall, balancing on its back legs. He's glowering at nothing in particular, and his drink on the table beside him has left a damp mark in the wood, it's been sitting there untouched for so long. Beside Kathleen, Bill Guarnere shifts on his stool.
"Yeah, he did." At Kathleen's raised eyebrow, he adds, "Heffron told me an hour or so ago."
"You know him?"
"Kinda." Bill tilts his head, flicking his eyebrows up and down briefly. "He's from Philly."
"Huh." Kathleen thinks for a moment, then hands her drink to Bill, who gives a whistle.
"Gonna go 'cheer 'im up', Marino?"
She rolls her eyes at what he's implying and pushes his arm, nearly making him spill his beer, as well as her own, and he gives a curse.
"Fuckin' hell, Kathleen."
"That's for safekeeping," she warns him, pointing at her glass as she stands up, "take a single sip and you owe me two more beers."
"Pfff."
She knows as soon as she turns around, he'll be drinking from it, but she doesn't really care that much. It's not like she's got much else to spend her paycheck on overseas, she can afford another glass or two tonight should she care for it. Pushing through the crowd, she makes her way over to the table in the back, and offers a friendly nod to the replacements sitting there.
"Babe."
He looks up, posture stiffening and eyes wide, then sees who it is and relaxes.
"Thought you were my ex," he mutters, eyeing the drink at his side but not actually touching it. So it was a 'Dear John' letter. Speaking of- the envelope, letter sticking out halfway, somewhat crumpled by now, is clenched one fist, and he's got the other hand shoved stiffly in his pocket. By his reaction, he remembers her from earlier, teasing about the way his letter was addressed. Good. She's just hopeful he doesn't find her presence a reminder of whoever wrote it.
With a nonchallant sway of her hips, Kathleen sits down on his lap. He's clearly surprised at the action, and she flicks one leg over the other, leaning back against the table. She holds one hand out and his stare drops from her face to her palm. It takes him a second or two, but he realizes what she wants soon enough and hands over the letter in his hand. Folding it neatly, she gives a satisfied hum and tucks it in the breast pocket of his uniform. She leans back, her elbows resting on the table, careful not to come near his glass and knock it over, and the other replacements nearby exchange glances.
"What?" She narrows her eyes at the men. "A lady can't take a seat where she likes?"
They murmur excuses and assents and she chuckles, then leans toward Babe and whispers in his ear, "If you're uncomfortable, I'll move."
"No," he mutters back, "I don't mind one bit."
She grins and ruffles his hair, then reaches behind her to pick up his beer and hand it to him.
"Kathleen Marino."
Finally, the first smile she's seen on his face all night appears, though it's a small one, and he replies, "Edw- Babe Heffron."
"Good to meet you, Babe." A giggle. "You've got a comfortable lap."
He winks, wiping a bit of froth from his upper lip after taking a draught of beer. "Stay there as long as you'd like, doll."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Babe nearly forgets to be upset over his ex now that Kathleen's come into his life. He knows it's quite soon to be interested in another lady now that his steady has left him, but he just can't help it: he's enamored with her within just a few days. She's friendly, clever, upbeat, a deadshot with a pistol, an excellent poet; not to mention she's got a grand sense of humor, the eyes of a tiger, and a cheeky smile to die for. A pang still runs through his heart when he thinks of the girl back home who's moved on to someone new already, but then he always reminds himself if she can do so, why can't he? That makes him feel better.
However, he's not so sure she thinks of him the same way. One night of chatting and a bit of dancing until they abruptly received the orders to move out that same evening, and he's awestruck. She, on the other hand, seems so cool and collected all the time around him. Sometimes, when she's laughing, or teasing, or messing with her hair, or just standing near him at all, the words just vanish from his lips and she'll have to prompt him as to what he was about to say. Half the time, he can't even remember. It's a disorienting effect she has on him, and he's still figuring out how to get over it a month or so after that night in the pub.
Holland: what a place. Operation Market Garden was a bust, but Easy's still stationed there by mid-October. Some of the Toccoa men are grumbling about the oncoming winter, suspicious they won't get weather-worthy supplies in time for the first snowfall, but Babe's preoccupied with other concerns: specifically, is Kathleen single? Is she interested in him? Is she flirting when she touches his arm or winks when she's teasing, or is she just being friendly? Does she know she makes him dizzy? Does she get the same flutter in her chest when he calls her 'Kathy' as when she says 'Babe'?
"It isn't good for ya," voices Bill Guarnere one night when he, Babe, and a few Toccoa men are fixing up their rifles, "ya can't focus in a fight with a broad on your mind."
"Ya don't think I know that?" Babe hits the side of the stock too hard, despite Shifty Powers' warning, and gives a curse when he feels a sting of pain across his palm.
"You should tell her," advises Floyd Talbert as Shifty leans over, taking Babe's hand in his own, frowning at the long cut.
"Nah, she'd just laugh at me."
"I doubt it."
Babe gives a start at the familiar voice, pulling his hand away from Shifty's grasp, and stares up and behind him. Kathleen crouches on the top of the stone wall the others are huddling behind and hops down once they shift aside to make room for her. The dirt shifts beneath her boots- soon enough, the ground will be too cold to move like that -and she sits down beside Babe, warming her hands at the haphazard pit fire they've got going.
"Whoever's laughin' at you's a damn fool," she declares, nudging her shoulder against his, then sees his hand and pauses. "Christ, Babe." When she reaches for his hand, he lets her take it readily, ignoring the eye-roll Shifty shoots him. "C'mon, I just passed by Spina, he can bandage this."
"Kathy-"
"No buts. C'mon."
"Don't worry, he ain't got an ass worth mentionin'," teases Guarnere, receiving laughs from the others and a look of disdain from Babe himself.
"Hardy-har-har." Kathleen gets up, letting go of Babe's hand. He follows after her dutifully, ignoring the extra jibes sent after the pair as they leave the warm fire behind, both ducking further into the collars of their jackets against the onset chill of the late-Autumn night.
"Oh, and Babe-" She leans up toward his ear. "-don't listen to 'em. I think you've got a fine ass."
Thank God it's dark out or he'd have to stumble for an excuse as to why his cheeks are suddenly red as ripe cherries.
They walk in silence for a little while longer, then she reaches for his hand again, drawing a handkerchief from her pocket. He protests at first, but then she pulls him closer by the wrist, halting her pace, and he falls to her whims. She's focused enough on patting up the blood on his palm and fingers not to notice him staring at her, so he takes the chance to admire her when she's standing barely a foot away. Her hair is done up in a tight bun, as usual, but by this time of night, tendrils have always escaped, and this evening's no different. He twirls one around his finger (with his good hand) before he realizes he's doing it and pauses when she lifts her head.
Her gaze meets his and she offers a smile, tilting her head toward where his hand still hesitates, and he risks tucking the whispy lock of hair behind her ear. She offers a smile through slightly-parted lips, eyes creasing, and it takes a good deal of his willpower to not either step away, a blushing mess, or try to kiss her on the spot, but simply smile in return. He manages it, somehow, and she pats his shoulder, withdrawing the now-bloodied handkerchief.
"Spina should be this way."
Her voice has gone softer now, and she walks a little closer to him as they resume their pace. He thinks about putting his arm around her back, but by the time he's made up his mind to do so, she's stopped, and they're at the trucks, and he loses the nerve. After a glance around the men loitering around the convoy trucks, she waves at one and calls, "Doc!" Ralph Spina looks up, a tin cup held tightly between spread fingers- apparently an attempt to warm his hands -and shifts on his feet.
"Something wrong?"
"Babe's hand's cut," Kathleen explains as they approach, and as Spina sets aside the cup on the floorboard of one of the trucks, the slightly-injured man appreciates how she phrased the matter so it sounded less self-inflicted than straight-out 'Babe cut his hand'.
"Let me see."
It only takes a few minutes, but in that time, Kathleen could slip away back to a fire, gone to check on some of the other men- she and Lipton are quite equally matched in their propensity for making the rounds to keep their fellow soldiers' spirits up -or simply said goodnight to go catch some shut-eye, but she doesn't. She waits at his side, hands tucked in her pockets, and exchanges small talk and a cigarette with Smokey Gordon.
"You're starin'," reminds Spina as he wraps Babe's hand, and the other man huffs.
"As if."
"The whole damn platoon knows you've got it bad for her, Heffron." At Babe's wince when he tightens the bandage too much, Spina mutters an apology and loosens it. "Besides," he adds, "she's nuts for you, too. Just better at hidin' it."
"Ya really think so?"
"I know so." Spina pats the redhead's shoulder and sends him on his way with a whispered, "Take a chance."
"All fixed up?" Kathleen greets him, handing the half-finished cigarette back to Smokey, and stands up from leaning against the tailgate of the truck.
"You bet."
"Good." She slips her arm through the crook of his, then calls over her shoulder at Spina, teasing, "If I see even one speck of blood on my Babe's hands, it'll be your sentencing, Spina."
"Well, I sure hope that bandage holds, ma'am," comes the reply, and they share a wave of farewell.
Babe's heart is going nuts. She's just called him 'my Babe'. Her Babe. God, he'd love to be hers. With a jolt, he realizes that one word is exactly what he needed to hear. Might as well give this a shot, right? So he tightens his arm around hers and pulls her behind one of the trucks. If he wasn't so apprehensive about her response to his impulsive action, he probably would have smiled at how she giggles and pushes at his chest. He scans her for a moment, eyes remaining on her face, and she crosses her arms, leaning back against the door of the vehicle and tilting her chin up.
"We're alone, together, a foot apart, and all you're gonna do is stare at me?"
"Well..."
She grabs his arm and pulls him toward her, and that's all the encouragement necessary to get his lips on hers. She pulls his helmet off with one hand as the other creases the pocket of his ODs with its grip, then he sighs into the kiss as he feels her fingers running through his hair. He hasn't combed it in a few days, and she catches on a tangle or two, but she's gentle, and he even finds it alluring. His own hands have risen to cup her cheeks, and he shifts his fingers, mindful not to press her ears against the side of her head. She tastes like a cigarette and he wrinkles his nose up at the flavor, but how can he complain now? He's kissing her, and she's kissing back.
He can hear her breath getting a little more labored as he braces his chest against hers. When he nips at her bottom lip, she gasps, allowing him time to slip his tongue into her mouth. She growls and he feels the sound echo through his bones, weakening him, and she wins the fight for dominance. In retaliation, he slips one hand between her waistband and skivvies on the small of her back and she shivers at his touch. Maybe it's how his hand is cold, but he'd rather think he just has the sort of effect on her.
Footsteps catch in his hearing alarmingly nearby and he steps back from her, tucking his hands quickly into his pockets, and after a brief glance at the pair, Captain Nixon breaks into a grin and starts whistling nonchalantly as if he'd never seen them. Babe looks back to Kathleen at the same moment she does and they share a breathless laugh of relief. Her cheek and jaw are pink where the bandage on his hand scratched against her skin and he brushes the spot, frowning slightly, with his fingers. She leans her head into his hand for the second time tonight, and his inhale grows steadier, reassured.
"Y'know, for the last week or so, I haven't been callin' you Babe 'cause of that ol' letter. Not anymore." She turns her face into his palm and brushes a kiss against it, her words murmured against his skin.
Such a simple, sweet gesture nearly blows him away, when it comes from her, and all he can manage to reply with is: "Really?"
"Yeah." She straightens his collar, then draws him closer to her again by the same touch. "It's been 'cause I want you to be my Babe."
His hands come to rest on her waist, just above her hips, and she looks at him with such gentle optimism he can't help but return her small smile.
"Oh, Kathy." He leans closer, his nose brushing against hers, and she rotates her head, expecting a kiss. He's tempted, but holds back for just a moment more. "I was your Babe since the minute you sat on my lap in that pub in Aldbourne."
She gives a snort of laughter, cigarette-tainted breath drifting across his cheeks and lips. "You hot-to-trot rascal." It's a fond scolding, and he smirks.
"Only for you, doll."
Her lips are again pressed to his before she even gets her response out: "Good."
Joe Moorhead explains what makes the Mississippi State offense so dangerous
Everything changed for Joe Moorhead as soon as he obtained the most valuable commodity in coaching: final say.
Moorhead had moved from FCS position coach to power conference offensive coordinator in just six years, and he had been reasonably successful as a play-caller. But when he took the head coaching job at Fordham in 2012, it was his chance to fully institute his offensive vision.
“That first year at Fordham, we said, ‘Alright, we’ve got 51 percent of the vote, and all of the things we’ve been talking about wanting to do,’” Moorhead tells SB Nation. “‘We’re gonna sit down and put the system in place that we want to run.’”
Fordham was desperate for a jolt of energy. It was the perfect environment for getting creative. The system Moorhead and his assistants created would help usher in the run-pass option (RPO) era.
The turnaround was immediate. The Rams improved by five wins in his first year and by six more, to 12-2, in his second.
They averaged 37.6 points per game in 2013, and despite an offseason ACL injury to dual-threat quarterback Michael Nebrich, they began to adopt some run-pass option reads, improving to 39.2 points per game in 2014.
Moorhead’s system wasn’t a reinvention of the geometry of football in the way that Hal Mumme’s air raid was. This was more the synthesis of a bunch of the most versatile ideas.
The former Penn State OC was an optimistic head coaching hire on Mississippi State’s part, one predicated on finding an extremely talented coach, not an overthought attempt at finding someone with perfect SEC (read: Nick Saban) or Mississippi ties. And Moorhead’s is an optimistic offense, one that has baked in as much flexibility as possible, in both tactics and QB empowerment.
If there’s any proof that Moorhead can thrive in Starkville, it’s the tenets of his offensive system, which reflect a commitment to inclusiveness and ingenuity.
Defensive coordinators have to make their decisions based on your personnel, not your formation. Don’t give them anything to work with.
All offenses try to make defenses guess incorrectly. That’s the trick behind any option concept: isolate specific defenders, make them guess, and punish them for that choice. Moorhead tries to make defensive coordinators guess wrong, too.
In 2016, as Penn State was making its run to the Big Ten title, Moorhead’s offense ran more than 98 percent of its plays out of 11 personnel (one running back, one tight end, three receivers). The numbers barely changed last year. A Moorhead offense can morph into plenty of looks, and players can substitute within their position groups, but the defense can’t glean anything from the players coming on and off the field.
“Defensive coordinators, they don’t really know what formation you’re going to line up in,” Moorhead says. “So when you’re in a certain personnel grouping, you have to make a defensive call, and it’s gotta match up against any formation they can align in.”
Joe Moorhead looks on as Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley warms up before playing Pitt in 2017.
Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports
By the time the defense sees the formation, it’s too late to call a play.
“So with us never switching personnel, we can align in three different formations with the tight end attached, we can align in two different formations with the tight end detached, and then we can line up in three different empty[-backfield] formations. And we haven’t taken anybody out of the game.”
Moorhead began to realize the power of singular personnel when he served as J.D. Brookhart’s coordinator at Akron from 2006 to 2008.
“We were no-huddle, but we were multiple personnel. It was like running a pro-style out of the no-huddle. It was hit-and-miss from a production standpoint.
“I would say the 2008 season was really the first time where we said, ‘Alright, we’re gonna be 11 and 10 personnel [one back, no TEs], mix in a little bit of 12 [one back, two TEs] — limited formations, limited plays. That ‘08 year was kind of the 1.0 version.”
Give your players as much control as they have earned. Teach the QB to be your eyes on the field and make changes based on what he sees.
Moorhead offers a hypothetical. Let’s say you’ve called a base RPO, in which you’re going to either hand the ball off to the running back or throw to a man running a replace route (i.e., running to a spot where an attacking defender once stood). But you’ve determined the defense is in man-to-man coverage, negating much of the point of an RPO, which is designed to conflict defenders who have responsibilities in both run and pass defense.
“There are things within the play to take advantage of that,” he says, and a well-designed offense has contingencies on top of contingencies. But if you’re not comfortable with what you’re seeing, just change the play.
“One of the benefits of our system is that we don’t have to stick to that play. If it’s a look that you don’t like, just get into a play that attacks that look.”
The concept seems intuitive, but player-coach relationships aren’t always so, shall we say, collaborative. And it wasn’t until Moorhead experienced collaboration that he realized he wanted to be a coach. His last two seasons as a quarterback at Fordham, he played for former Bill Snyder assistant Nick Quartaro, who gave his QB freedom Moorhead never knew was possible.
Quartaro went 11-31-1 as Fordham’s head coach, though that was a marked improvement over what he inherited. Four of those 11 wins came when Moorhead was a senior.
“The system that he put in — Bill Snyder’s system — was a one-back, mostly 11 personnel,” Moorhead says. “Going back to that playbook — to improve upon an existing play call or change the play call completely — that was something I took a great amount of pride in.
“I think maybe that subconsciously stoked some of those coaching embers,” he notes. “In [Quartaro’s] system, you could get to the line of scrimmage, and literally if you didn’t like something, you could completely change it,” which Moorhead did quite often.
“I think that was the best thing about it, being able to play in a system that gave the quarterback an incredible amount of autonomy. And really from a preparation standpoint, you had to know what was going on. When you have that kind of freedom, you can’t just wing it.”
He laughs, “Coach and I still joke about it all the time. There was one game, and one of my buddies, a defensive guy, was standing next to him on the sideline. We’re going through a drive, and I think I had checked out of five or six straight plays. He’s like, ‘Jeez oh man, this guy’s checking out of every play that I call!’”
Until Quartaro’s influence, Moorhead had envisioned a different path for himself. He was an English major who expected to go into sports journalism, but only once it was clear his first career choice wasn’t going to work out.
“In all honesty, I wanted to play professional football. I wanted to be Dan Marino or Terry Bradshaw and chased that dream as long as I possibly could.”
It would make sense that someone whose major included a creative writing curriculum filled his playbook with more choices than plays. Take Moorhead’s go-to play-action call, for instance. It’s what he ran in 2003, his one year as Georgetown coordinator.
Joe Moorhead
This is your common power run look to the right side, and the Z receiver — the receiver lined up on the strong side of the formation with the tight end — has route options based on how he’s being covered. He has to read the same thing that the QB is reading.
“That’s what we got from [former Pitt coach] Walt [Harris],” the former Panthers graduate assistant says. “That’s one that’s stood the test of time. Going all the way back to 1999, it’s literally the same play.”
The option route can be traced back to John Elway’s high school days.
“But essentially what we’ve done now is, we can run this concept to any of the other receivers.”
It’s a Z option here, but it could be an X option (to the end split alone on the other side), or an option for the slot receiver or tight end.
“I’d say there’s a tremendous amount of carryover from Akron to here,” Moorhead says. “It’s developed and progressed throughout those stops, but the run game is what’s completely changed.”
Never put yourself in a position in which your QB doesn’t have options.
“I would say 85 to 90 percent of the runs we called had a second phase or a tag,” Moorhead says. The complexity varied, but “rarely do we just call a run and just hand it off without having the quarterback read somebody at the first, second, or third level.”
This is where football has begun to change. It’s easy to think of RPOs as a third category of play, alongside runs and passes. But you have to be prepared to run if you’re calling a run-pass option; the concept is only going to have so much use on, say, third-and-11.
To illustrate how the RPO is utilized, let’s look at a couple of mesh points (the point at which the hand off is to occur, or not occur).
This is the same inside run play, the first taking place on first-and-10, the second on second-and-10. But they have different tags. The first play has a bubble screen slapped onto it, the second has something different.
On the first, against Northwestern last year, McSorley appears to be reading the defensive end, who surges upfield and opens up space for Saquon Barkley to do Saquon Barkley things. Barkley races to the end zone to ice the game.
On the second play, from late in the 2017 win over Michigan, McSorley appears to read the outside linebacker, who is himself reading run and not covering the slot receiver. McSorley then throws to an open slot man for a 23-yard gain.
Both of these plays were called as runs. This is how you take your pro-style influences and fit them into an innovative, ridiculously QB-friendly system.
Defenses will always try to dictate the reads you make. Stay one step ahead of them.
In that Northwestern game, not much was working. The Nittany Lions were never severely threatened on the scoreboard — in the first half, they forced three turnovers and a turnover on downs, all in their own territory — but in a season in which it seemed like PSU led every game 14-0 at opening kickoff, Northwestern had the offense locked down.
Sometimes, you need playmakers. Barkley made one.
The play that turned the 2016 season around wasn’t a run-pass option of any sort, just a plain, old pass Penn State used pretty frequently.
Joe Moorhead
PSU was trailing 13-3 against Minnesota early in the third quarter. The Nittany Lions were 2-2 and coming off of a blowout loss to Michigan. No one was thinking of them as Big Ten contenders. Head coach James Franklin, who had brought Moorhead in to liven up a stagnant offense, was catching more heat by the week.
Moorhead called one of his go-tos, a pass that often went to tight end Mike Gesicki, the guy lined up opposite the three receivers on the other side.
Minnesota had Gesicki and Barkley, the dump-off option, covered up. The Gophers were well-prepared for the attack to that point. McSorley had to step up in the pocket and make a play downfield.
“The post part of that route” — the middle receiver’s route in the trips combo — “is one that may have changed our whole tenure at Penn State,“ Moorhead says. “Irv Charles caught it ... actually the ball kinda caught him ... but he split it for 80.”
Later, McSorley improvised again, scrambling for 26 yards to set up a game-tying field goal.
“That was the point in that season when everything kinda turned around,” Moorhead says. “From that point on, we made a conscious decision that we were gonna run Trace more. And that opened up a lot of things for us.”
Offenses have control when they build options into their attack, but defenses can still dictate which options get chosen. So at some point, McSorley had to make plays. And the better an offense adapts to its personnel, the more likely it is to figure out what its playmakers can do.
In 2016, only two teams had more gains of 30-plus yards than the Nittany Lions did. In 2017, Moorhead’s second year, defenses completely changed how they defended PSU. So McSorley took what he was given.
“Defenses were attempting to take away the big plays,” Moorhead says. “Trace read it, the deep ball wasn’t there, and he came down to our second or third option. Or the coverage for us to go deep wasn’t right, and we ended up going to the other side of the field.”
If you don’t have talented players touching the ball, your system is only going to be so effective. But Moorhead feels he has built the best system for whatever his personnel has to offer.
“What excites me the most is the simplicity and flexibility of our system,” he says. “We can tailor it to a running quarterback, and we can tailor it to a throwing quarterback. If we need to pass more because that’s our strength, then we’ve done that — 5,000 yards one year at Fordham, and Trace has broken all the records at Penn State. If it’s a team that’s more offensive line-centered and run game-centered, then we can lean on that. We’ve never been higher than 55 percent [run or pass], one way or the other.”
That could be key in 2018, as Moorhead inherits one of the most proven rushing quarterbacks in the country, Nick Fitzgerald. Not including sacks, the senior-to-be rushed 155 times for 1,026 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2017. When Fitzgerald got hurt, backup Keytaon Thompson rushed for 155 non-sack yards and outplayed Lamar Jackson in a bowl win over Louisville.
Fitzgerald is really good, but he’s different than McSorley. Moorhead’s fine with that.
“The success of our offense isn’t contingent upon one phase being that much better than the other, and I think that’s where we as coaches need to be cognizant of it. It’s not what we want to work, it’s what’s gonna work based on who we have and how we can teach it.”
The fifth tenet to Moorhead’s philosophy has more to do with the man than the system.
Starkville is a lot further south than anywhere Moorhead has ever coached.
He is a generous and well-spirited interview. But when you ask him about a change in culture, about getting a head coaching job in the SEC without ever having coached in the league before, he looks a little weary. You can tell he’s been asked the question quite a bit. But until there are actual games, all he can do is talk.
Recently, that meant going to Memphis, Houston, and Atlanta (where plenty of MSU grads and potential recruits live), but also to Mississippi towns like Vicksburg, Cleveland, Biloxi, Meridian, and Tupelo.
“We were on the road through all of December and into January,” he says, “and we’ve had multiple coaching staffs come through here and talk ball. I’ve had a chance to go throughout the state on this Road Dawgs Tour and meet the fans and people who support the program. I think it’s probably part Southern hospitality and part just being genuine with people, but it doesn’t make the transition very difficult.
“And I just feel strongly in my heart of hearts that the regional aspect of coaching and recruiting is incredibly overblown. If you can coach, you can coach. If you can recruit, you can recruit.”
The tour gave him time to test out a strong talking point: “I ask the crowd if they know Nick Saban, Jimbo Fisher, and Urban Meyer’s home towns. Fairmont, W.V.; Clarksburg, W.V.; and Ashtabula, Ohio, which is almost in Canada. It hasn’t hurt them too much. Not to compare myself to them from a productivity standpoint, but — it might not guarantee success, but it doesn’t eliminate it either.”
Moorhead tried to align his staff to account for the holes in his résumé. He is surrounded by an almost perfect mix of former Moorhead assistants, coaches with Mississippi or SEC experience, and coaches with head coaching experience.
“It’s like Ocean’s Eleven,” Moorhead says about the way he put his staff together.
At Fordham, he inherited far less talent than what he’s found in Starkville. When former head coach Dan Mullen left to take the Florida job, he did Moorhead a favor, leaving behind both a well-stocked cupboard and room for growth.
In nine years under Mullen, the Bulldogs averaged 7.7 wins per year and won in a way that MSU had not since the late-1930s and early-1940s. They even reached No. 1 in the AP poll for the first time, midway through 2014.
“We’ve been very good,” Moorhead says, “but there’s been one winning record in the SEC for Mississippi State in the last 15 years.”
The SEC West is still the toughest division in college football. Simply getting to 4-4 in conference play, as Mullen did in each of the last three years, will never not be an accomplishment for the Bulldogs.
Sebastian has slipped outside of the Hughes house and pulled out his phone to call his dad, He held the phone against his ear waiting for the call to start.
“Hey Seb.” Todd said once he answered the call.
“Hey Dad.” Sebastian greeted back, “I uh was wondering if you got my email?” Sebastian has emailed his dad all the tickets and hotel details for his upcoming Draft but he never got an answer back.
“What was it for?” Todd asked opening his email to try and find the email he hasn’t seen yet.
“My draft.” Sebastian answered.
“Oh.” Todd trailed off as he clicked on the email and realized what the dates were, “I’m sorry Seb but we won’t be able to make it.”
“What?” Sebastian cleared his throat, hoping he had heard him wrong.
“We have the cruise for Em’s birthday that week,” Todd told Sebastian the reason, “I’m sorry Seb but none of us will be able to come.”
Sebastian scoffed and just hung up, why did he even try with them anymore. He ran a hand through his hair frustrated and groaned leaning his head back on the wall.
Ellen walked outside to get Sebastian for dinner and saw him looking very frustrated but upset.
“Bas?” Ellen called gently and her head clenched sadly when his head looked up and she saw how devastated he looked, “Hey what’s wrong?” Ellen gently asked walking over to him.
Sebastian just shook his head not wanting to be so upset over this, “Can i just have a hug El?” Sebastian softly asked looking at her hopeful.
“You never have to ask Bas.” Ellen fondly smiled and pulled him into a comforting hug, he leaned his forhead on her shoulder as she gently played with his hair feeling him relax.
Sebastian always thought Luke got his comforting hugs from Ellen.
“Now you want to tell me what is wrong?” Ellen asked softly again once they pulled back.
“No one is coming to by draft.” Sebastian mumbled out as all of his “family” couldn’t make it.
Ellen felt her heart drop hating how much his birth family keeps hurting him and they don’t been realize, “Hey forgot about them.” Ellen gently brushed his hair back, “You know we are all coming right?” Ellen told him as it has been on all of the Hughes calendar since the date was released.
“You are?” Sebastian blinked in shock he thought only Luke was coming but he truthfully couldn’t be suprised as the Hughes care about the people they love.
“Of course we are silly.” Ellen teased him softly with a soft smile.
“Thank you El.” Sebastian mumbled pulling her into another hug, she has healed alot of his scars and past trauma from his birth mother and made him realize you can choose your family and blood doesn’t always mean family but love does.
“Always sweetheart.” Ellen pressed a kiss to his head, Sebastian has been one of her sons since she saw his sad eyes the day Luke brought him home, she loves him as much as her other sons and she is very grateful that one day he will be her son in law.
“Now come on let’s get inside before they eat all the food.” Ellen threw an arm over his shoulder as they walked back inside.
Luke looked up when Sebastian walked back in and could tell something was wrong with him and he gave Sebastian a concerned look.
Sebastian sat down on his spot next to Luke and just squeezed Luke’s thigh, “I’ll tell you later.” Sebastian whispered seeing Luke’s look.
drunk
Tumblr media
November 10, 2023
The Devils played the Capital’s and lost 2-4 and the team decided to go out after the game as most of them just wanted to get drunk as they had the next day off.
Jack was out for that game but was watching in the press box decided to join the team as well.
Luke was pretty frustrated after the game so Jacks and Sebastian shared a look and decided they would let Luke drink as much as he wanted and Jack would get the drinks for him.
They have been at the bar for at least a few hours now and Luke has gone through many drinks and shots and was fully leaning against Sebastian and falling asleep.
“Jacky.” Sebastian called out from where he was sitting with Luke and he instantly got Jack’s attention as Jack spun around and saw his baby brother falling asleep.
“You got him?” Jack doubled checked as Sebastian stood up with Luke completely leaning on Sebastian his eyes barely open.
Sebastian nodded and followed Jack out of the bar as they waved bye to their teammates.
Jack opened the back seat and helped Sebastian get Luke into the car and Luke whined when Sebastian tried to let go of Luke making Sebastian and Jack share a fond look and Sebastian got into the backseat with Luke.
Luke instantly curled up on Sebastian and his breath slowed down.
“Is he asleep?” Jack smiled as he looked through the mirror seeing Luke completely laying on Sebastian.
“Yeah.” Sebastian hummed and gently rubbed his hands through Luke’s hair, he frowned gently seeing the dark circles under Luke’s eyes and how pale he has gotten.
“Are you alright Bassie?” Jack gently questioned as he was driving and looked through the mirror and could tell Sebastian was troubled.
“It’s a lot.” Sebastian mumbled out knowing if anyone would understand it would Jack, “I just didn’t expect it to be so much.” Sebastian knew it was going to be hard in the NHL he just didn’t expect for it to be this much, especially with all the injuries and how much Luke and Sebastian are both playing.
“It is. It doesn’t get easier but you get use to it.” Jack didn’t want to lie and say it was easy the longer you are in the NHL because he knew that was a lie.
“Thank you Jacky for taking care of us.” Sebastian truly appreciated how much Jack has helped both him and Luke when he didn’t have to.
“Always buddy always i gotta take care of my two baby brothers.” Jack playfully winked through the mirror smiling as he saw the smile on Sebastian’s face.
Sebastian leaned his head back onto the seat closing his eyes for the rest of the drive.
Sebastian leaned his head up as Jack parked the car and he gently shook Luke awake but just got a grumble.
Sebastian gently shifted out from under Luke and got out of the car.
“Is he awake?” Jack peeked into the car still seeing Luke still fast asleep in the car.
Sebastian shook his head in reply and slipped his arm under Luke’s legs and picked him up. Luke didn’t even stir and just rested his head m on to Sebastian’s chest still fast asleep.
Jack just smiled shaking his head and closed the car door.
They walked to the elevator and took it up to their floor and walked down the hallway to their front door, Jack opened the door and Sebastian walked in and headed down the hallway to his and Luke’s room.
Sebastian gently set Luke down on the bed and started taking his shoes and skipped the shirt off Luke’s head and his jeans and grabbed a pair of shorts and put them on Luke. Luke didn’t even stir but Sebastian was used to that and he has permission from Luke to change him when he’s asleep and drunk.
Sebastian quickly got changed into a pair of sweatpants and then grabbed both of their phones plugging them both in but making sure the notifications were all off. Sebastian closed all the blinds of all the windows in their room so they can sleep in.
Jack walked to the doorway and leaned on the doorway fondly smiling at the two, he’s loves being able to see all the little things between them and truthfully loves their relationship so much.
Sebastian looked over and saw Jack standing at the door with water and medicine for the morning and the drunk bin they have in case one of them is sick.
Jack walked in and set the bin down on Luke’s side and set the rest on his nightstand and he turned around and pulled Sebastian into a gently hug.
Sebastian relaxed into Jack’s hug and leaned down to rest his head on Jack’s shoulder.
“You are doing amazing job bassie and you are having an insane rookie season, buddy i’m very proud of you.” Jack held Sebastian tightly as told him everything Sebastian should know.
“Thank you.” Sebastian mumbled feeling a lot better but he wasn’t surprised it was Jack, Jack always had a way of making him feel better.
“Always.” Jack promised his adopted little brother and pressed a kiss to the side of his head before letting him go, “Get some sleep you deserve it.” Jack sent him a smile heading towards the door.
“Jacky?” Sebastian called out and Jack turned around curiously, “I love you.” Sebastian didn’t say those words often to anyone that wasn’t Luke but Jack deserves to hear them more.
Jack felt his heart and face soften immensely, “I love you too.” Jack smiled and turned back around and closed the door behind him.
Sebastian let out a breath and walked over to the bed and laid down on his back and even in his sleep and drunk Luke scooted closer to Sebastian’s and threw his arm over his stomach.
Luke mumbled something against Sebastian chest and Sebastian softly chuckled pressing a kiss to Luke’s head, “I love you too.”
marks again
Tumblr media
October 11, 2023
Sebastian, Luke and Jack all walked into the locker room about to have their last practice before the first game of the season tomorrow.
Sebastian and Luke headed to their stalls and were staring a conversation with John and Alex when Sebastian took off his hoodie and leaned down to grab his workout long sleeve when he heard Nate snickering.
“Jeez were you with a vampire Bolds?” Nate smirked as he saw all the hickeys and scratches across Sebastian’s neck, arms, chest and back.
“Damn Seb.” Curtis let out a chuckle, “Who did you see the last few days?” Curtis noisily prodded wondering who Sebastian slept with over the few days off.
Luke let out a small snicker but just continued to look down at his stall getting dressed, the smirk on his face was very proud. He had a lot of marks too but they were more hidden than Sebastian’s.
Jack looked up and gaged seeing Sebastian covered, “No no no. We are not talking about my little brother’s sex life.” Jack quickly protested and everyone thought he was only talking about Sebastian but no one knew he was talking about both of his little brothers.
Jack realized what the two did together when he was gone all day yesterday.
Dougie let out a laugh shaking his head and patted Jacks shoulder mockingly enjoying that Jack is one grossed out this time.
Nico titled his head thoughtfully as he noticed Jack said brothers not just brother, he looked over at Luke and saw a smirk on his face and Nico noticed a few smaller hickeys on him, Nico hummed realizing he’s been correct all along.
Sebastian just shrugged not at all ashamed or embarrassed by any one of the marks because they were from Luke.
goodbyes
Tumblr media
April 6, 2023
The Umich Hockey team was getting up about to head out onto the rink about to play the Frozen Four game against Quinnipiac.
Sebastian stood up and saw Luke across the room still sitting on his stall and fiddling with his gloves. Sebastian walked over letting everyone else walk out and the room was empty besides Luke and him.
He sat down next to Luke and put his arm around Luke bringing him into his side, “I know my love.” Sebastian mumbled comforting Luke kissing the top of his curls. Sebastian knew how nervous Luke was for this game because so was he. If they lose they were leaving tonight to head to New Jersey and signing their entry level contracts.
“I’m gonna be sick.” Luke mumbled resting his head against Sebastian’s chest listening to the even sound of his heartbeat and taking slow deep breaths. Luke has never been this nervous for a game before but this game was a lot in general and adding the pressure of the signing and joining the NHL after put a lot more pressure on it.
“I know.” Sebastian and pressed another soft and long kiss to the top of his head, “Let’s go out and enjoy this.” Sebastian gently stood up and held out a hand for Luke to take.
Luke grabbed his hand and stood up and looked at Sebastian’s soft and comforting eyes and reassuring smile and took a deep breath breath and nodded dropping his boyfriend’s hand.
Sebastian and Luke walked through the halls and jumped onto the ice warming up their team not knowing it would be the last time.
The game started and it was tense from the start, the first period started and Quinnipiac scored first and then Seamus got a goal making the score a tie before Quinnipiac scored once more before the period was over.
Luke knocked his helmet against Sebastian’s as they stepped back onto the ice for the second period.
Luke passed to Sebastian who passed the puck to Adam leading to Adam scoring a goal and making the score tie once more.
Sebastian and Luke shared one more soft look as they stepped back onto the ice for the third period.
Luke passed the puck to Sebastian making him shoot the puck and getting a goal, and making Michigan lead for the first time all night.
“Let’s go baby.” Luke cheered as he knocked his helmet against Sebastian’s smiling widely as they celebrated the goal.
The happiness didn’t last long.
A few minutes later Quinnipiac scored again. And again.
Michigan lost 3-5 to Quinnipiac.
Sebastian watched as Luke tried to hurry off the ice towards the bench and quickly realize what was wrong, he rushed over grabbing the bucket and held it for Luke while blocking him from all of the fans and camera.
“Sssh let it all out.” Sebastian softly cooed and gently rubbed Luke’s back as he puked into the trash can Sebastian was holding. Sebastian was just as upset as Luke but was better at hiding it.
Luke went to try to speak but Sebastian just gently shushed him understanding how upset he is.
Sebastian gently wiped off Luke’s face and grabbed his water leading him down the rest of the tunnel and through the halls catching up with their teammates.
Sebastian sat with Luke in his stall not wanting to leave Luke alone and not wanting to be away from Luke.
Mark pouted and walked over sitting on the floor in front of Sebastian and Luke leaning his head on Sebastian legs, Ethan looked over and quickly walked over sitting down next to Mark on the floor. Mackie was sitting on the other side of Sebastian and Dylan sitting on the other side of Luke.
Sebastian could honestly say he had no idea what their coach said as he was just playing with Luke’s fingers the whole time.
Players started slowly shuffling to the showers and Luke gently stood up and pulled Luke with him. Sebastian wished he could shower with Luke but knew he couldn’t hear so he guided Luke to a shower and took the one next to him.
Sebastian quickly took a shower and threw on a pair of sweatpants and t-shirt, he waited outside the showers for Luke, who did take the longest out of everyone and most of the team was back in the locker room already.
Luke looked sadly towards Sebastian and could tell his boyfriend was struggling too, Luke walked over and pulled him into a gentle but tight hug letting Sebastian burry his head into Luke’s neck. Luke could feel the shaky sigh he let out.
“Me and you?” Sebastian soflty mumbled against Luke’s neck.
“Me and you always.” Luke reassured him and pressed a kiss to the side of his head and reluctantly let Sebastian go and stand back up.
They shared one more look before heading back into the locker room that was just a sad atmosphere, The two saw their suitcases that they brought by their stalls with their hockey bags all packed up completely.
Sebastian let the freshman tackle him into a hug and he fondly rolled his eyes but group hugged all of them back, he wouldn’t admit but they all grew on him.
Luke was saying his goodbyes to the older players before Sebastian came over and Luke went to their freshman group.
Once Luke and Sebastian said their goodbyes to almost the whole team expect their grade, Mackie, Dylan, Ethan and Mark.
Mark lunged forward and tightly hugged one of his best friends, “Don’t be a stranger alright.” Mark mumbled as he tightly hugged Sebastian.
“Never.” Sebastian promised hugging back someone he’s always going to consider a best friend.
Dylan and Luke were hugging each other tightly. Mackie and Ethan watched sadly.
Mark reluctantly let go of Sebastian and let Mackie and Ethan hug him at the same time.
Sebastian let out a fond sound and hugged the two tightly back.
Mark walked over and hugged Luke tightly, “Take care of him?” Mark whispered.
“Always.” Luke promised, once he was jealous of the relationship between Sebastian and Mark but he realized Mark and Sebastian understand each other in a way no one else does and Luke knows now that the two are truly just platonic, platonic soulmates.
Dylan walked over and pulled Sebastian into a tight hug, Dylan took a deep breath trying not to cry as he was saying his goodbyes to his two best friends, not sure when they would see each other again.
“Thank you.” Sebastian mumbled hugging Dylan back, Dylan was surprising but he crept into Sebastian’s heart and became needed Sebastian knew he always needed.
“Always bud.” Dylan sadly mumbled back and reluctantly let go of him.
Dylan and Sebastian looked over seeing Luke just getting out of the hug with Mackie and Ethan.
Sebastian and Luke shared a look and nodded they both turned around and grabbed their bags. The two started walking out of the room and looked back once more at the team before starting to walk away.
Luke and Sebastian both nodded many goodbyes to Michigan staff as they walked through the arena and to the outside where the car was waiting to take them to the airport.
They gave the bags to the driver and Sebastian opened the door letting Luke hop in first, Sebastian got in after him shutting the door.
Luke gently grabbed Sebastian’s hand and fiddled with his fingers the whole drive to the airport, Sebastian leaned against the window looking out the car the whole time and gently rubbing Luke’s hand with his thumb.
They thanked the driver and headed through the airport, through security and headed to their gate, they got there just at the plane was boarding and walked right on.
Sebastian let Luke take the window seat as he put their hockey bags in the overhead before sitting in the middle seat and putting the arm rest up between them. Luke held onto Sebastian’s hand tightly as they sat there waiting for the plane to take off. Lucky for them no one sat next to them and it was just the two of them in the row.
Luke let out breath he was nervous but he had Sebastian and that made all the fears go away because no matter what he had Sebastian with him.
Sebastian scooted and found a comfortable position and rested his head on Luke’s shoulder closing his eyes.
Luke let his head fall onto of his boyfriend’s head and closed his eyes.
Sebastian slowly woke up at the shake and felt the plane landing on the ground, he opened his eyes and looked at the screen seeing they just landed in New Jersey.
“Lu baby.” Sebastian gently cooed running a hand through his curls softly, Luke mumbled shuffling closer to his boyfriend warmth, “Come on we landed.” Luke slowly peaked his eyes opened and nodded lifting his head up and rubbing his face.
Sebastian stood up and grabbed their bags for them and let Luke walk down the row first and off the plane.
They headed down the pick up their checked bags and quickly grabbed them and walked through the airport to the outside where Jack was picking them up.
Jack was waiting in the pick up lot and smiled widely as he saw the two walking to him, he was ecstatic when Luke got drafted to the Devils and it only became better when Sebastian was drafted too. Jack has know Sebastian for so long now he’s become a younger brother to Jack. And Jack has always been glad how good of a best friend Sebastian has always been to Luke.
Jack and Luke quickly hugged other tightly, Jack softly ran his hand through his bag brothers curls before reluctantly letting him go and pulling Sebastian into a hug as well.
Sebastian bent down slightly and hugged Jack back, Sebastian would never admit it to anyone besides Luke but Jack is someone he sees as a brother and so is Quinn.
“Come on let’s get you guys home.” Jack giddy smiled, he helped them put all of their bags into the car and then the two hoped into the backseat while Jack drove them.
Jack had recently moved before the start of the season to a a lot bigger apartment, with alot of extra rooms and space because he knew the two would stay with him at least a year and he wanted to be able to have alot of guests but be able to let any other teammates stay with him.
Sebastian had wanted to get his own apartment with Luke but Jack all but begged that two would stay with him at least for a season as he wanted them to stay with him so badly.
Sebastian knew that Luke missed his brother and he did miss Jack too so it wasn’t hard for Jack to convince them to live with him.
Jack yapped for the whole drive back and pulled into the parking garage, he parked the car and they all got out.
Luke and Sebastian grabbed their bags and followed Jack through the building and elevators up to the floor, Jack led them down the hallway and to the apartment door and opened the door.
They walked in after Jack, Jack lead them down a hallway, “Here this is a Jack and Jill rooms so i thought they would work good for you too? And my rooms across the apartment.” Jack opened the door to one of the rooms and led them in.
“It’s all good Jack thank you.” Luke smiled patting his brother on the shoulder.
“Alright i’ll let you to settle in.” Jack smiled once more and walked out of the room closing the door behind him.
Sebastian walked to the bathroom and opened the second door and it connected to his room, which was convenient for them. As Jack still has not realized that Sebastian and Luke are together.
Luke walked through their bathroom into Sebastian room and grabbed his hand pulling him to the bed, Luke pushed his boyfriend onto the bed and quickly climbed on top of him and laying down on him.
Sebastian just wrapped his arms around Luke and gently played with his curls.
Luke let out a long breath and held onto Sebastian tighter.
daughter
Tumblr media
August 7, 2006
Sidney was pacing out side the hospital walls, hearing the screams of Jasmine, who has been in labor for 17 hours now. Sidney had sent home his parents and younger sister as they had been with they all day and he wanted them to at least get some sleep.
Sidney’s head snapped up as the door opened and one of the nurses walked out, “Mr. Crosby, your daughters been born.” The woman gave him a kind smile.
“Daughter!” Sidney choked out as Jasmine didn’t want to find out the gender as she didn’t care for it.
Sidney shook his head pushing back the emotions, “Can i see her.” Sidney questioned looking desperately towards the nurse.
“Of course.” The nurse kindly replied and gestured for him to walk into the room.
Sidney walked in and only spared a single glance at his ex-girlfriend, who was turned away from the door and away from the bassinet that had his newborn daughter in it.
Sidney took slow steps and looked down and saw the most precious thing in the whole work, Sidney knew his daughter has already stolen his heart and nothing was more important to him then her, he gently picked her up and she made a small cooing sound as her little fingers wrapped around his finger.
“Hello Cameron.” Sidney lovingly mumbled, letting out a watery laugh as he feels his cheeks wet from his tears.
He has picked out the name when he found out about her, He loved it because it fit for a girl or a boy name, just like his.
“Sir?” One of the nurses kindly called out gaining his attention, “You have to write out full name and as Ms. Waters has signed away all of her rights so you will need to sign this for the birth certificate.” The nurse set down the papers in front of her him and handed him the pen.
Sidney nodded and shifted his daughter carefully to his one arm and picked the pen up in the other hand, he wrote out her name, Cameron Taylor Crosby. And signed everything he needed too and handed the papers back to the nurse.
“We just need to clean her up and give her a checkup and you’re good to bring her home dad.” Another nurse kindly told Sidney and stretched her hands out towards to take Cameron, Sidney hesitated not liking the idea of letting go of his daughter.
The nurse just calmly smiled because she is use to parents not wanting to let go of their kids, “Why don’t you come with us.” She kindly suggested and Sidney quickly nodded and followed the nurses out of the room not even sparing a glance at his ex, he picked up his back pack swinging it onto his shoulder.
Sidney followed them into the room and gently and reluctantly set his daughter onto the bed, he stayed closed by her side tho and let her fingers stay gently wrapped around his finger.
The nurse started doing a thorough check up on the newborn making sure everything was good and she was healthy before she then started cleaning her up, “Do you have an outfit to bring her home in?” The nurse asked him as many parents will bring in an outfit to bring their baby’s home or the hospital will give them one.
Sidney nodded and opened his backpack pulling out a white and pastel yellow onesie that has little flowers on it, the nurse helped him put it onto Cameron.
The nurse then made sure she went over everything with him as she could tell he was nervous and she knew he was a single father so she wanted him to feel prepared.
“And you are ready to take your girl home.” The nurse kindly told Sidney making him smile, he nodded and thanked the nurse before he started the walked out of the room and down the hallway towards the front of the hospital, he walked out of the front doors and to his car.
Sidney opened the back door and gently laid his newborn daughter into her new car seat and he gently caressed her tiny and soft cheek and gave her one more lovingly smile before he shut the door and he walked around putting all of his stuff into the car before he got into the driver seat.
Sidney took a nervous breath as he turned on the car and slowly and cautiously pulled out of the parking spot and drove the short drive to his house in Nova Scotia, he had recently bought his own house in his home town and bought a house in Pittsburgh as he wanted his daughter to have homes.
Sidney gently grabbed his peacefully sleeping newborn, he slung his bags over his shoulder.
He walked into his house for the first time with his daughter and it felt like home with her.
He set down all of his bags by the door and gently walked over to his couch and slowly sat down being mindful of his daughter in his arms.
Sidney knew he needed to tell his parents and younger sister, and his team that his daughter has been born but he wanted some time alone with Cameron, taking a moment to just have with his daughter.
Sidney slowly and gently slipped his shirt off as he read in one of the parenting books that babies enjoy skin to skin contact and he gently rested his newborn daughter on his chest and pressed a gentle kiss to her head.
Sidney knew that being a single dad and only about to start in his second NHL season, he knew it would be a lot of work but he had a good support system and it would all be worth it for his daughter.
Sidney felt his daughter squirm around slightly and he gently hummed a small soft tune and gently rubbed his tiny back and felt her let out a little puff of air before relaxing fully against him once again.
Sidney smiled contently and relaxed more into the couch and pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head and could feel his eyes slowly beginning to fall shut.
Lucia let out a breath as she laid down on her bed after the crazy long day she has had. Lucia has been in New Jersey for four weeks now and she has played in multiple games already and she feels like she’s getting use to playing professionally.
They had just played the fifth game of the playoffs series against the rangers last night and had won 4-0. They are 3-2 in the series with the Rangers right now.
Lucia turned on her phone for the first time all day and frowned slightly seeing the hundreds of messages and missed calls but decided to not click on them assuming they were just group chats and the boys spamming her. She clicked on instagram and the first post she saw made her heart drop in her chest.
She quickly sat up and looked at the screen intently, Mackie had a girlfriend? A girlfriend he was hard launching with. Did the girlfriend know about her. Lucia felt sick. She has the scratches and bruises from the last time she spent with Mackie still on her body and he’s posting with another girl.
Lucia quickly turned her phone off and tossed it onto bed before she hurrying up and rushing to her bathroom and puking out her guts. Lucia dry heaved as she tried to catch her breath.
Lucia didn’t know what to think. She’s been hooking up with Mackie for almost two years and she knows they officially never had a girlfriend/boyfriend title but they promised to not sleep with anyone else. Hell, Mackie introduced her to his friends from home calling her his girl.
Lucia could feel her skin crawling remembering his hands on her and wondered if he’s touching his girlfriend like he touched her.
She shakily stood up wiping the back of her hand over her mouth. She walked to her shower putting it on the hottest setting and quickly stripped out of her clothes and hurrying under the boiling water and starting to scrub at the places that still have any reminders of him left.
Lucia leaned her head onto the cold wall, a stark contrast to the boiling water. Her heart felt like it was chipping slowly and she hated it. She hated that someone could hurt her this bad. She hated that she trusted him enough to love him. She hated herself for falling for him.
She remembered when her mother talked about her first heartbreak and Lucia resented the fact she feels the exact same way as her mother described.
She wasn’t supposed to get hurt. She wasn’t supposed to care for him.
Lucia stumbled out of the shower and threw on random clothes not caring what it was. She walked over to her bed and flopped down staring at her ceiling.
She was glad Jack was out for the night and she didn’t have to deal with trying to explain anything about this to him.
Lucia ignored the vibrating of her phone and chose to continue to stare at her ceiling for hours.
She didn’t even realize she spent so many hours staring at her ceiling until the sun started to come through her windows and looked at the clock seeing it was already almost seven in the morning.
Lucia took a deep breath and sat up, she needed to do something to get enough of her emotions out for her to focus on her game tonight.
She put on a pair of running shorts and a hoodie, slipped on running shoes before heading out of the apartment into the gym in the building.
Lucia hoped right onto the treadmill and slipped her noise canceling headphones and just ran.
Running to get out all of the emotions and just staring out the window and running.
Lucia could feel the sweat dripping down her but it was a good distraction from feeling anything else.
Her phone buzzed with an alarm and she looked down still ignoring all of the notifications and saw she needed to get back and get ready for the game.
Lucia hopped off the treadmill and she realized she ran for three hours and didn’t stop.
Lucia headed back up to Jacks apartment and walked in seeing Jack chilling on the couch on his phone.
“Hey moosey!” Jack’s head snapped up at the sound of the door opening and saw Lucia in workout clothes and flushed in the face but had really dark circles under her eyes, “Hey did you get any sleep?” Jack looked at her in concern wanting to make sure her rookie year wasn’t getting to much already.
“Yeah i did must still be tired, i’m gonna try to get a nap before we leave.” Lucia smiled tightly and Jack nodded looking reassured.
Lucia let out a breath as she turned down the hallway, she didn’t know what hurt more. The fact she had to lie to her brother as they weren’t close enough anymore to talk to him about Mackie or the fact that Jack didn’t even know she was lying straight to his face.
Lucia walked into the bathroom and looked at herself in the mirror and groaned frustrated at herself, how could she fool herself into thinking he loved her back and why did she think it was a good idea to want to confess to him in the future but she obviously wouldn’t amymore.
Lucia ran a hand through her sweaty hair and decided to grab her phone that was still sitting on her bed and of course the first notification was from Mackie, she clicked on it wanting to know what bullshit he has to say.
He doesn’t want you anymore sweetheart. Block his number.
XO XO -Becky
“Bitch.” Lucia cursed as she realized his girlfriend knew about her and still was with him. Lucia shook her head and decided the two deserved each other.
Lucia saw she had thousands of messages from her three best friends and she knew they knew about this but she couldn’t talk to them right now, it would make it hurt all over again.
Lucia looked at her home screen and saw a photo of their group at Michigan and she angrily scowled at how she was in Mackie’s arms and the bright smile on her face, Lucia quickly changed it to whatever photo she saw first that didn’t have Mackie in it.
family skate
Tumblr media
December 7, 2022
Maleah kneeled down in front of her son as she slipped on his shoes, smiling at his adorable outift, cargo sweatpants, white sweater, black puffer jacket and an orange beanie that is covering his beautiful blonde curls.
“Is Uncle JoJo coming?” Malakai looked at his mother in question as he played with his green dinosaur that is his absolute favorite stuff animal ever.
“He is, he will be here any minute and you guys will have a fun time.” Maleah brushed her hand against his cheek pressing a kiss to his forehead before standing up and picking Malakai up and resting him on his hip.
“Are you sure you can’t come Mama?” Malakai softly asked playing with the ends of his mother’s hair.
“You know i wish i could! But you’ll have lots of fun with Uncle Jojo.” She smiled down at her favorite person feeling terrible she couldn’t make the Devils family skate with John and Malakai, especially since Malakai and her have went to all the other family skate when John played at the Penguins but she had a fashion show at the exact time as the family skate and she has to be there.
Maleah had been so busy the fast few months that Malakai and her haven’t had the chance to meet John’s team yet, especially since Malakai doesn’t love a lot of people and going to games gets quite overwhelming and they tend to watch the games at home. Also the last five or so months the two have done a lot more traveling and just haven’t been home often.
Maleah heard the knock on the front door and walked over to the door with her son in her arms, she opened the door and smiled at her best friend, “Jo!” She smiled watching John smile widely at the two and pull them into a hug.
“Hi Mal and Little Mal!” John grinned kissing Malakai’s cheek, Malakai giggled at his godfather.
“Alright you guys better get going,” Maleah reminded John, “I love you Kai, you be good okay.” She looked down at her son pressing a kiss to his forehead.
“I love you too Mama!” Malakai frowned slightly never liking leaving his mother.
“Come on my little buddy.” John brightly grinned taking Malakai into his arm and picking up his little hand waving at Maleah, “Say bye Mama!”
“Bye Bye.” Maleah fondly waved back at the two watching them head down the hallway and into the elevator.
John walked them into the parking garage and heading to his car, he opened the passenger seat and set Malakai into his car seat that is always in John’s car, John buckled the seat belt and handed Malakai his green dinosaur before closing the door and heading into the drivers seat.
John drove to the Devils Arena and parked his car in the parking spot, he hopped out of the car and opened the passenger door and took his godson out of the car seat.
“You wanna walk or be held?” John asked Malakai, Malakai made a thinking face before holding on to John’s hand meaning he wants to walk, “Alright. We do have to leave Mr.Dino in the car, he might be cold at the rink.” Malakai made a sad face but reached up and set his stuff animal in the car.
John made sure to walk slowly with Malakai holding his hand, they walked through the hallway to the locker room seeing a lot of the players with their friends and family.
John having been traded to the Devils the beginning of the season and this would be his first family skate with the Devils, his parents couldn’t make it and Maleah tried but she had to be at her show.
Nico Hischer looked over from where he was talking with his parents and sister and saw John standing with a young boy. Nico smiled and excused himself and walked over to John and he kneeled down in front of the young boy, “Hi, I’m Nico, what’s your name?” Nico held out his hand towards the young kid and smiled comforting at the kid.
Malakai looked up at his godfather for permission, John smiled and nodded. Malakai shyly shook Nico’s hand, “I’m Malakai.”
“That’s a very cool name Malakai!” Nico smiled at the boy.
“Thank you.” Malakai smiled slightly at Nico.
“Who’s this adorable little guy!” Jack Hughes smiled walking over seeing John with a little boy.
“This is Malakai he’s my godson.” John fondly smiled as he looked down at Malakai ruffling his hair.
“I’m Jack!” Jack smiled widely at the young boy and pulled a funny face making Malakai giggle slightly.
John felt himself relax slightly seeing his teammates being so kind to Malakai, He scooped up his godson, “Alright let’s get your skates on.” He spun them around making Malakai laugh.
John walked them over to his stall and set Malakai down on the stall, pulling out the small ice skates he brought the other day that he has for Malakai, he kneeled down in front of his godson and slipped off his shoes and slipped his tiny feet into the skates and started lanching them up. John stood up and sat down next to Malakai quickly putting on his win skates.
“Ready to go?” John held out a hand for Malakai, The boy nodded and hopped up grabbing his godfathers hands, while John grabbed his stick and Malakai’s very tiny stick and small helmet.
John slipped on the helmet onto Malakai’s head and clicked it on, before they started walking out of the locker room and headed down to the rink.
Malakai quickly got onto the ice extremely smoothly having been on the ice since before he could walk.
John was skating right behind Malakai knocking some pucks onto the ice letting Malakai grab on with his hockey stick.
“Oh, you better move!” John teased gently hitting his stick in front of Malakai trying to take the puck away, Malakai giggled but kept the puck to his stick and hit into the goal.
“Ohhhhh and Malakai scoresss!” John cheered putting his arms around his waist and spinning Malakai around.
“Uncle JoJo!” Malakai giggled throwing his little head back as his godfather spun him around like crazy.
“Who is this adorable little dude?” Alex Holtz skated next to John, holding his hand out for fist bump.
“This is Malakai! He’s my godson.” John proudly introduced him to Alex, Malakai hit his fist to Alex’s.
“He’s so cute!” Dawson Mercer smiled as he skated on the other side of John waving at Malakai.
“Thank you.” Malakai shyly whispered.
John and Malakai said bye to Dawson and Alex and they continued skating when one of the Media people asked to take a picture of them.
Malakai rested his head against John’s leg smiling, John rested his head on the back of Malakai’s helmet.
The media person said bye and skated away.
“Can we take a picture for Mama?” Malakai asked excitedly knowing his mother loves getting pictures when he is away.
“Course buddy.” John pulled out his phone and kneeled down next to him and held up his phone as the two smiled at the camera, John quickly sent the photo it Maleah before putting her phone away.
Nico saw the media team asking John to do an interview and saw Malakai with John, Nico skated over and rested a reassuring hand on John’s shoulder, “I can watch him?” Nico asked if John would be comfortable with that.
“Okay thank you.” John smiled, he looked down at Malakai, “Be good?” John not to worried about letting Malakai go with Nico because they are only gonna be on the ice.
“Okay.” Malakai smiled and looked over at Nico, “Do you have your stick?”
“I do it’s by the bench.” Nico smiled and slowly skated with Malakai following him to the bench. Nico grabbed his stick and saw Malakai having a puck against his stick.
Nico smiled seeing Malakai already so comfortable skating around and him being so young and already so impressive with a stick and puck.
“How long have you been skating?” Nico questioned as they passed the puck back and forth.
“Mama says she brought me on the ice since i could stand,” Malakai responded and Nico saw how much the little boys face lite up talking about his mother, “Mama use to play when she younger, Uncle Jojo, Uncle Matty and Uncle Anty all play in the NHL.”
Nico face turned in thought, “What teams do they play on?”
“Uncle Jojo plays with you, Uncle Maty plays at the Islanders and Uncle Anty plays for the Canucks.”
Nico slowly nodded trying to figure out the players real names, “Anty is Anthony Beauvillier?” Malakai hummed and nodded, “And Matty is Matthew Barzal?”
“Yeah he’s my Mama’s brother!” Malakai proudly told Nico.
Nico’s eyes widen realizing exactly who his mother is, Maleah Barzal. Nico having saw her for the first time in 2017 at a game and he was awestruck and he’s never seen her again at any games but he follows her on Instagram and saw her posting her son but she never showed her son’s face so Nico didn’t realize until now.
“Do you go and see them play?” Nico curiously asked as he hit the puck back to him.
“Sometimes, i get um Mama says the world is owhelming.” Malakai stuttered over his word not remembering the word his Mama said.
“Overwhelming?” Nico guessed.
Malakai nodded, “Yeah that one, there’s a lot of people at games so we watch at home alot.”
“It does get a lot sometimes.” Nico sympathized remembering the first time he ever went to a hockey game when he was young and how overwhelmed he was.
“I like going.” Malakai has felt bad when he got so anxious and Maleah and him started going less because he knows his mom misses going.
Nico hummed an idea coming to mind, something he would talk to John about.
Nico and Malakai set the sticks back on the bench choosing to skate around and Malakai slowly reached up and held onto Nico’s hand, Nico looked down and couldn’t help this heart from squeezing in fondness for Malakai.
John ended up taking a little while longer than he thought and when he skated back he saw a sight that he couldn’t help but smile at. Nico looking down softly at Malakai as he held onto his little hand as they skated together.
John skated around to the other side of Malakai and held onto his other hand.
Malakai and John skated with Nico for the rest of the family skate before the got off the ice with the rest of the players and families.
John kneeled down in front of Malakai untying his little skates noticing Malakai’s little yawns and the way his little eyes were starting to drop.
John picked Malakai up and set him on his hip, Malakai rested his head on John’s shoulder and slowly could feel his eyes starting to drop.
John waved to his teammates noticing Malakai fast asleep in his arms and quietly and quickly headed out to his car. John gently set him into his car seat and hoped into the drivers seat heading back to Maleah’s penthouse.
John pulled into the parking garage shutting off the car, he hopped out of his seat and opened the door getting a still sleeping Malakai out of his car seat.
John walked through the apartment building up to the penthouse floor and knocked at the door.
Maleah quickly opened the door and smiled seeing them she gently took Malakai into her arms and sighed in relief holding her baby again.
She moved over letting John walk in and take his shoes off, “Let me put him to bed and you get changed there is dinner on the counter.” Maleah having only just gotten back a few minutes ago and brought dinner home for them.
Maleah turned around and headed into the hallway and down to Malakai’s room, she walked in pulling back his blankets and gently set him down on the bed. She slipped off his jacket, beanie and shoes not even making him stir and left him in his sweatpants and sweater.
Malakai was cuddling his dinosaur tightly between his little arms. “Goodnight i love you.” Maleha leaned down pressing a kiss to his forehead as she covered him up with blankets.
She stood up and walked over to the window closing the blinds all the way and turned on his sound machine before quietly walking out of the room leaving the door cracked open.
Maleha walked into the living room seeing John already poured them wine and was putting the food on his plate.
“This is why you’re my best friend.” Maleah spoke as she sat on the couch next to him picking up her glass of wine.
John laughed as he turned on the TV putting on the show they have been watching.
Maleah and John stayed on the couch for the next few hours watching their show and drinking wine.
April 6, 2023
Lucia sat down on her stall running a hand against her braid crown, she let out a breath and started getting ready for the game, a game that could be her last game with Michigan ever.
She slipped her jersey on and grabbed her gloves standing up and swallowed feeling her stomach turning, she played important games before many times but this game was getting to her. Maybe it was the pressure of getting Michigan to the finals or if they lose she was going straight to New Jersey and signing with the Devils and leaving behind her collegiate career and all of her teammates.
She took a deep breath and pushed back all the emotion as she stepped onto the ice.
The game started and quickly once it started Quinnipiac scored but not even a minute after Seamus scored making the score back to a tie. But it didn’t last long as Quinnipiac scored once more before the period was over.
Lucia felt uneasy as she stepped off the ice and down the tunnel, she excused herself and rushed into the bathroom and quickly kneeling down just in time for her to puke into the toilet.
Lucia heaved as she tried to catch her breath and rested her forhead on her arm closing her eyes for a few seconds before she stood up and wiped her face off.
She walked to the sink and splashed her face with water and looked into the mirror seeing how sickly pale she was and the dark circles under her eyes, she took a deep breath and reminded herself that this is her dream is to play hockey.
Lucia walked out of the bathroom and joined her team in the locker room for the rest of the intermission.
Lucia bumped her helmet against Dylan’s like they do in most games before hopping onto the ice waiting for the second period to start.
Rutger passed the puck back to Luica, who quickly passed it to Adam, Adam scored.
Second period ended 2-2.
The third period started and Lucia could feel how tense she was and tried to take deep breath to relax before she hopped onto the ice starting her first shift.
Quinnipiac scored only one minute in, leaving Michigan dejected and it onto got worse as they scored once more. And once more.
Michigan lost to Quinnipiac 2-5.
Lucia barely stepped onto the ice before she was grabbing the trash bucket and puking for the fourth time that day, she felt her chest heaving as she tried to catch her breath.
Ethan and Dylan both quickly stood around her making sure the cameras and fans couldn’t see her puking.
Mark looked worried and quickly walked over gently rubbed her back as Dylan pushed her bangs out of her face and Ethan grabbed a towel for her.
Lucia toon a deep breath and took the towel wiping her face before standing straight, she gave the three a reassuring nod as they had to get back on the ice for awards.
Lucia could barely remember how long she stood with the team on the ice and when they walked back to the locker room, she sat stoically at her stall as she started taking off her gear.
Luica nodded to whatever her coach was telling them, she was to out of it to even comprehend what he was saying.
Lucia slowly shuffled to the shower and looked completely out of it and barely paying attention as she slipped out of her clothes and got underneath the steaming hot water.
Lucia let out a breath as she felt the start running down her and leaned her head back resting it on the wall and closing her eyes for a few minutes.
Lucia knew she couldn’t hide out in shower for ever and eventually shut the water off and slipped on a pair of black sweatpants and black long sleeve, she put on her favorite white nike shoes and just brushed out her hair letting it be down and just naturally start curling as she had no patience or anything in her to braid and do her hair.
She walked out of her shower and saw Mackie waiting outside it for her, “What are you?” Lucia started to ask but couldn’t finish as Mackie leaned towards her and cupped her face pressing his lips against hers desperately.
Lucia softened and ran her hands through his wet hair as she kissed him just as desperately back.
“Just wanted to say bye privately before you left.” Mackie mumbled against her lips explaining his actions.
Lucia just nodded, she wanted to ask if they were stopping their friends with benefits but knew emotionally she couldn’t do that right then.
Luica and Mackie walked back into the locker room and Lucia pursed her lips sadly as she saw her bags all packed up at her stall for her.
Gavin and Seamus shared a look and lunged forward hugging her tightly, “We are still your favorites right?” Gavin mumbled.
“Sshh it’s a secert.” Lucia whispered back hugging both of them she looked over at Frank and opened up one of her arms and he quickly came over hugging her tightly with Gavin and Seamus.
Lucia turned to the two brothers and gave them a soft smile and they both quickly pulled her into a group hug.
Adam tightly hugged her and buried his face in her shoulder and Luca rested his head on top of her shoulder.
Lucia let them go and turned to Rutger and he sadly smiled and pulled her into a tight hug, “Thanks bud.” Rutger mumbled remembering all the times Lucia spent with him practicing on the ice with him when she didn’t have to.
Lucia just squeezed him tightly back and turned to Tj, She smiled softly and they did their handshake before he pulled her into a hug.
“We will see you soon Hughes.” Tj whispered to her.
“I know Hughes.” Lucia whispered back. She let go and looked at her next teammates.
Jacob and Keaton shared a looked and pulled her into a group hug. Lucia hugged the two back before they let her go.
Lucia walked over to Philippe and Steven who quickly pulled her into another group hug and swayed her back and forth.
Lucia let them go and turned to Nolan, “Bye Cap.” Lucia mumbled into the hug.
“See you soon little Hughes.” Nolan softly mumbled hugging her gently before letting her go.
Lucia turned to her group and softly smiled at them, Mark and Ethan both quickly lunged forward and pulled her into a tight hug. Lucia hugged both of them just as tightly back, she rested her head on Ethan’s shoulder and closed her eyes hugging them tighter.
Lucia slowly released them and gave them a sad look before looking at Mackie and gave him a wobbly smile, Mackie sadly smiled and gently pulled her into a hug, he hand cupping the back of her head and holding her close.
Lucia blinked harshly and sniffed pulling away from the hug and turned to the hardest goodbye, her best friend.
Dylan and Luke looked at each other sadly before they both lunged forward hugging each other. Lucia let out a wobbly sigh as she hugged her best friend and for the first time in years she wouldn’t be living with him anymore nor would she be playing together with him.
“Have fun.” Dylan mumbled his voice cracking with emotion before they both reluctantly let go of each other.
Lucia grabbed her bags and gave her team one more look and probably the last time she will ever see them all together again, she turned around and walked out of the locker room and away from her past.
Lucia said many goodbyes as she walked through the arena. She finally got to the parking lot where a car was waiting for her and she put her bags into the car and the driver quickly started the drive to the airport.
Lucia let out a sad sigh leaning her forhead on the cool class of the window and closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
