Next In Line: Gimmicks Originally Planned For Other Wrestlers
Next In Line: Gimmicks Originally Planned For Other Wrestlers
Brian Damage Looking back at the time when Rob Van Dam was offered the gimmick of ‘Glacier’ in WCW…I started looking at other wrestlers who were offered gimmicks that they turned down. There have been many gimmicked wrestlers over the years. Some have worked well, while others failed miserably. It might not necessarily been the wrestler’s fault a gimmick failed and in other cases, the gimmick…

Sydney, The Focal Point Part II- Passion
Tumblr media
Part 2 of Sydney being Carmy's focus. I decided to go step by step of the episode "Omelette" to show how the focus turns to Sydney again.
Tumblr media
Carmy and Claire's love scene lacks connection despite whispers and laughs. Dark blue lighting adds coldness and isolation. Carmy lies awake, and the scene cuts to Syd putting on her jacket, hinting at Carmy's thoughts about her. (shoutout to @belassima meta-analysis of Carmy)
The thoughts have swirled around since that evening when he makes Claire dinner, as Sydney enters the Claire/Carmy montage- Carmy still thinks of Sydney and even makes the version of her Ragu.
He makes this version because he lacks creativity when it comes to Claire.
He lacks passion.
Passion
Going to the next scene with Sydney, her dad tells her she doesn't have to make everything a thing. Syd replies why can't we put everything we can into what we have? This is a callback that you're going to have to care about everything more than anything.
One of the explorations this season is passion.
Do we have passion for the right things? Are we giving our all to something worthwhile? What role does passion take in our lives?
We see this passion explored through Claire being a doctor= that shit really fires me up, Carmy loving cooking but does not find it fun, and Sydney experiencing failure in following her passion.
Back to the scene-Sydney admits why she is putting her all into this one passion, and it's because she is not sure if she can do it again, if she has the drive to live out and dare to follow that fire and it has a chance of blowing out should she experience another failure.
For Carmy, it’s about finding his passion again, dreaming and creating, and the reasoning behind is explored in the second season. While his foil, Richie, finds his drive and purpose, Carmy is still left wondering who or what his passion is.
Tumblr media
So, after the scene with Sydney, we go to Carmy as he, who's in the midst of his panic attack, willing himself to see Claire in this romantic light, tries to see her as the good thing his family wants him to feel for Claire.
But he continues to spiral until he freezes and holds his breath until he can finally focus on his passion- and that’s Sydney, whose voice comes through in his panic.
Now that he can calm down, Carmy is left with a possible realization: that he doesn’t feel for Claire but feels that fire for Sydney.
Tumblr media
We get to the next scene where Carmy is exhausted and stress; he has the oh shit, I can't stop thinking of my business partner look in his eyes.
But he's not too frazzled; he's aware of his surroundings; he notices the painting, notices Nat's pain in her shoulder, and listens to all that needs to be done for a successful opening. Carmy is getting his focus back.
Tumblr media
Seeing Sydney after his panic attack, she asks if he called Tony. He's distracted by her and the stains on her jacket. He doesn't remember who Tony is and tries to focus on work but keeps focusing on Sydney.
He focuses on Sydney to a fault. He's keeping his eye on the ball.
A story of complete and utter Failure
Tumblr media
We have now reached one of the most crucial parts of the episode. It's a story about failure - a story where Anthony Gonzales loses focus. Jimmy is explaining to Carmy the reality of the restaurant business and how everything depends on Carmy.
The missing piece in Carmy's puzzle is his passion and his reason for doing what he does. Carmy is stuck in the business and is unable to keep his eyes on the ball. However, the ball is different from what we anticipate - it's not the success of the restaurant, but rather Sydney, something that Carmy has already missed out on due to his lack of focus. Carmy brings up the most logical reason for his lack of focus: his girlfriend.
However, his distraction isn't work-related. Instead, he's thinking about Sydney (his passion) outside of work, leading him in a different direction and making him crave new experiences.
Wanting something different than what he has accomplished before is like playing a new game, where failure is a possibility, which can lead to doubt and fear.
This is why he is dating Claire. He is not passionate about it, but it is a game he knows he can win easily.
But he’s losing because no matter how much he tries- the thoughts surrounding Sydney and all that could be outside of work and his anxiety- that fear keeps him paralyzed at times.
We know it’s about Sydney- the reason behind not focusing behind work- because the scene cuts to Sydney- reminding us of her why and why she does what she does, why she has so much passion for cooking and it evokes a sense of peace and presence in her life- the same for Carmy whenever he’s around Sydney.
In the next scene, Carmy is determined to complete his task and calls the fridge guy. However, just as he is about to make the call, Claire calls. Carmy becomes frozen, unable to face his problems. This fear is intensified by the thought of breaking up with Claire and having to take a risk to pursue his passion.
Tumblr media
The next scene carries foreshadowing. Stay focused and don't get overwhelmed. Keep your eye on Sydney and follow her lead.
When he has the reminder and permission to follow and focus on his passion, he can stay just as present as Sydney when she makes the omelet. In this infamous table scene, he even acknowledges that he can't do it without her. For without his passion, this is all meaningless.
Tumblr media
Carmy realizes that Sydney brings the fiery emotion he needs to succeed.
He is fully committed to Sydney, and I think he's choked up because of the weight of committing. He finally wants to be there for someone, to risk it all and put his emotions into helping her succeed.
A risk is involved when pursuing one's passion, as often there's suffer8ng in the experience, but with it follows purpose.
What will Carmy choose? Will he follow his passion- Sydney, or will he live life without passion? Without purpose?
Stay tuned for part 3.

MLM Book recommendations
It’s pride month and I’m very gay, so why not?
Tumblr media
Cemetery Boys - Aiden Thomas : Trans boys and ghosts? Yes please!! This book follows Yadriel, a trans guy, who accidentally summons Julian, a guy from his school, whilst trying to prove himself as a real brujo. He agrees to help Julian find out what happened to him and who knows, maybe on the way there’s a little bit of romance…
Angels before man - Rafael Nicolás : It’s my opinion that not every queer book should be happy and work out perfectly and if you think the same, this book is for you. It follows Lucifer before he fell, who begins to realise that God is far more hypocritical and controlling that the others perceives him to be. Lucifer learns to love himself without god with the help of another angel, Michael. If you do read this though, please make sure to search for the trigger warnings first!! They are also listed on the first page of the book.
If This Gets Out - Sophie Gonzales and Cale Dietrich : If you’re looking for a queer story with a happy ending and a message of being proud of who you are, this is for you!! Ruben and Zach are two members of one of the biggest boy bands in the world, Saturday. On camera, Ruben is a straight heart-throb but in private he is in the closet and forced to confide in Zach. They come to rely on each other more and more until maybe their friendship develops into more…
I Was Born For This - Alice Oseman : This book follows two seperate characters, Angel (a fan of the band The Ark) and Jimmy (a musician in the band, The Ark) who unexpectedly find each other. I’ll admit that there isn’t too much romance in this book, although there is an underlying sense of tension between two characters (I won’t say who) and they eventually manage to confess. I think that it’s good to have stories in which this romance isn’t the focus, it becomes far more normalised. I really do recommend this book!!

Menaces to Society (Rhett Abbott x Reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: You thought your boys were feral as children......wait until they turn twenty one
Warnings: Perry slander, Tillerson slander, taking a leak on somebody’s truck for revenge, drunken shenanigans etc.
Tagging: @sebsxphia @lewmagoo @bradleybeachbabe @nobody7102 @creativitybeware @rhettabbotts
The group of boys had all gathered at the Handsome Gambler, crowding around the bar as their favorite music blasted from the jukebox in the corner. After weeks spent on midterms and constant studying, the boys of the Delta Tau Epsilon Fraternity were more than happy to be blowing of steam, among them, Tatum and Tanner Abbott and Colt Tillerson.
“CHUG IT!!!! CHUG IT!!!! CHUG IT!!!” the boys chanted as they lifted Tanner up by his legs for the kegstand challenge.
Tanner took in as much as he could, the bar owner timing him as his frat brothers cheered him on. Finally, he swallowed the last little bit before Jimmy Peterson, the bar owner, clocked him in and put his time record up on the chalkboard.
“You my man,” Tate Dutton said, clapping a hand on Tanner’s shoulder. “Are the fucking kegstand CHAMP!”
Tanner and the other frat brothers cheered loudly as Bo Andreola, one of the football players, lifted him up onto his broad, husky shoulders. Around 1:30, Jimmy announced it was closing time, only to be cued by the playing of Luke Bryan’s “Time To Take My Drunk Ass Home”, the boys and all the bar patrons singing along like a bunch of screeching seagulls.
Out of the bar they stumbled, Tatum, Tanner, Colt, Tate and Jake Dutton, Joey Wheeler and a few others heading to the parking lot. “Alright fuckers,” Tatum slurred. “Let’s get us home, I’m drivin.”
“Uh the fuck you are!” Danny Gonzales told him. “You’re drunker’n I am. I’ll call my brother.”
Danny luckily had his brother, Antonio, on speed dial. Antonio never really drank and thus had become the designated driver along with three others. Unfortunately for them, Antonio was across town and wouldn’t be able to pick them up for at least a half hour.
They wandered up and down the streets, looking for a place to wait it out, when they spied two familiar vehicles parked on the curb. “Oh shit,” Tatum muttered after letting out a rather rude burp.
“Wassup?” Joey asked him.
“You know who’s trucks those are, right?”
“Aw shit,” Joey answered when he came to the realization. “That’s Trevor and Perry’s trucks.”
“What are those fuckin assholes doin in our neck of the woods?” Jake questioned.
“Probably doin each other in an alley somewhere,” Tate chuckled.
Tatum and Tanner gave each other a look as soon as an evil little germ of a thought began to bloom in the back of their heads. Even Colt could tell what they were thinking without even saying a word. “You know what we gotta do right?” Tatum said.
“Better do it now while we’re loaded,” Tanner told him.
Tatum readily instructed for him, Tanner and Colt to take Trevor’s truck while the others could have at Perry’s. “Alright boys,” Tatum announced. “This one’s for Dad.”
All at once the boys unzipped their flies and relieved themselves right there on the horrible men’s dirt spattered trucks, laughing the whole entire time. Too bad Jaime’s car hadn’t been nearby. Tate, Jake and Joey would have absolutely loved the thought of taking that one on as well. Bo and Danny held up their phones, taking a video of the drunken frat boys for later. It wasn’t long either before they were taking photos of their little graffitied creation, the words “Fuck you Perry” and “Fuck you Trevor” having been inscribed in the dirt with their own streams while the boys pointed at it and made stupid faces or stupid poses with it.
The sudden blurt of police sirens and the flash of lights made them all straighten right up. Sheriff Joy hopped out onto the curb and shut the doors to the cruiser, sighing and laughing all at once when she saw the culprits.
“Oh God, not you idiots again,” she sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose.
“HEY AUNT JOY!!!!!!” Tatum and Tanner greeted loudly and happily.
**************
“Rhett can you get the door?!” you called from upstairs.
Rhett groaned and rose from the couch, straightening his reader glasses on his nose before making his way to the door. When he opened it, he was a little less than pleased to find Joy on the porch.
“Hey Rhett,” she greeted. “I just picked up your little miscreants outside the bar and came to drop them off.”
“Oh God, what’d they do now?” Rhett groaned.
“Check their phones, I guarantee you there’s photos,” Joy laughed before heading back to the cruiser.
“Oh damnit,” Rhett muttered. “Darlin, ya’ll better come down here, it happened again!”
***************
The boys were absolutely silent as Rhett scrolled through Tatum’s phone and his camera roll, his face contorting into confused and wide-eyed expressions every so often.
“So let me get this straight,” Rhett said, breaking the long, pregnant pause that had come over the kitchen. “You idiots were loaded beyond all human reasoning, were waiting for a ride home and decided to take a leak on a vehicle?”
Tatum burped again. “Yep.”
Rhett bit his lip, trying hard not to laugh, looking at you as if you’d break first. “Alright, you jackasses go upstairs and make yourselves cozy, I’ll discuss this with your mother.”
The boys all stumbled up the stairs, trying their best not to wake Amy and Jeff’s baby who had just fallen asleep in yours and Rhett’s room. “Are they in trouble?” you asked him.
“I’ll be nice and let’em off the hook this time,” Rhett chuckled. “Tomorrow when they’re all hungover is a completely different story.”

FLAMIN’ HOT (2023)
Starring Jesse Garcia, Annie Gonzalez, Dennis Haysbert, Tony Shalhoub, Emilio Rivera, Matt Walsh, Pepe Serna, Bobby Soto, Jimmy Gonzales, Brice Gonzalez, Vanessa Martinez, Carlos Sanchez, Hunter Jones, Carlos Solórzano, Jayde Martinez, Fabian Alomar   , Mario Ponce, Eric Marq, Alejandro Montoya Marín, Howard Ferguson Jr. and Lora Martinez-Cunningham.
Screenplay by  Lewis Colick and Linda Yvette Chávez.
Directed by Eva Longoria.
Distributed by Hulu/Disney +. 99 minutes. Rated PG-13.
A couple of months ago there was a movie about making athletic shoes. Now is one about making corn snacks. Who says there are no new ideas out there? Wonder what film about business-oriented sensations in the 1980s and 1990s will be next? (That’s a rhetorical question. There is already another film coming soon called Tetris, about the creation of the popular early computer game, and another movie on the way about the creation of the BlackBerry.)
Flamin’ Hot tells the story of Richard Montañez, a worker on the maintenance staff of Frito-Lay in the 1980s and 90s who was able to help save the business when he came up with the bright idea of offering up spicy chips for the Mexican market. Not only did it make billions of dollars for the company, but it also offered Montanez entrance into the executive suites.
Of course, there has been some question whether Montañez’s story, which led to his memoir A Boy, a Burrito, and a Cookie, about the creation of the flavored chips is totally accurate. Flamin’ Hot is based on the book and accepts the word of its hero.
It’s a sweet story, a nice parable, breezily directed by actress (and first-time director) Eva Longoria, but it’s not nearly as substantial as Air was just a few months ago. Much like the Flamin’ Hot Cheetos that Montanez created his movie is puffy, tasty but slight, a nice little snack but one filled with empty calories.
It helps that it has an appealing lead. Jesse Garcia makes Montañez a smart and charming guy, with a loving wife and two cute (bordering on cutesy) kids. The film shows his youthful indiscretions and his determination as a family man to be true to his friends and community and to work his way up the corporate ladder.
He works hard – using his time and his own money – to come up with the brainstorm that will turn his life around.
One problem here is that despite the whole idea – and the reality – of the difficulty of a low-level employee getting an idea out into the world, Flamin’ Hot sometimes makes it seem surprisingly easy. Montañez is able to reach PepsiCo/Frito Lay CEO Roger Enrico (played by Tony Shalhoub) and easily convince him to not only listen but invest lots of money on the dream of a man who has no experience in business or marketing.
However, Flamin’ Hot never claims to be a gritty look at discrimination in the workplace. It’s only trying to be a feel-good narrative about a man finding his dream, and it does succeed on that level.
The film itself isn’t exactly Flamin’ Hot, but it’s caliente enough.

I wonder if Carmy was so choked up after his promise to Syd because he realized the weight of his words. That he has to be the guy from here on out, and he made a promise to someone even though promises are meaningless in his family. But he wants to try, and he's always tried with Sydney.
Even though he resonates with Sydney'what-ifs because Jimmy hits him with the cold reality of profit margins, focus, and failure a few moments earlier. He still promises Sydney I won't let you.
Carmy feelings are so strong for Syd that he would be Bartman to Syd's Gonzales and take the bigger fall for her if it comes to that.
Because, in the end, he's the guy for Sydney.
