🔒 To Speak Up
by Vrishchika (@vrishchikawrites)
M, 6k, Wangxian
Summary: To be silent is to be complicit. Kay's comments: I've re-read this story numerous times and it always goes so hard. Vrishchika decided to apply what we know of the novel canon Jiang family dynamics in a modern AU and suddenly, it feels much more icky than it already did in canon. Luckily, Wangxian are already established in this story and Wei Wuxian has the Lans and Wens looking out for him as well. Still, it's heart-breaking how willing he is to bear it. Excerpt: Wen Qing is tempted to push but she doesn't, she can't. She can't bear the thought of this kind boy, her little brother's best friend, dealing with his wounds alone. Because that’s what he’ll do if she shows too much worry. Wei Wuxian is ruthlessly practical and doesn’t like to be vulnerable. If he thinks he’s troubling her, he’ll find someone else to care for his wounds. Someone less competent. His back is littered with scars and Wen Qing wonders at the extent of his nerve damage. She prays there's nerve damage because the alternative is chronic pain from the extensive scarring. She aches to drag him to her hospital and get him examined thoroughly. Wei Wuxian is a strong, athletic man and if she hadn’t seen his scarring up-close, she would’ve never believed he had any. "You will eventually need to address these, Wuxian." She tosses the soiled cloth away and carefully applies an antibiotic ointment on the wounds, "I'm prescribing you painkillers and some antibiotics to help avoid infection. You will take them religiously." Wuxian huffs, "I always take medicine, Qing-jie."
pov alternating, pov outsider, modern setting, modern no powers, dysfunctional jiang family, jiang family dynamics, bad parents jiang fengmian and yu ziyuan, not jiang cheng friendly, hurt/comfort, established relationship, families of choice, child abuse, blood and injury, hurt wei wuxian, caring lan wangji, good uncle lan qiren, good sibling lan xichen, child neglect, no jiang cheng & wei wuxian reconciliation

Oh I just had an idea ! Alt ideas. What if Jiang Cheng was the natural genius talented rising star, and Wei Wuxian was the one struggling to try to even keep pace ? Would the jiang parents be better or worse? How would everyone else see or react to them? Would wwx be just a disciple and not in the family at all?
“He didn’t mean it that way,” Wei Wuxian said, and Jiang Cheng laughed bitterly at how unconvincing – and unconvinced – he sounded.
Truly their Jiang clan had truly embarrassed themselves, he thought, if even Wei Wuxian’s silver tongue couldn’t find a way to cover up their follies.
“Your father –”
“Likes you better,” Jiang Cheng interrupted, his voice flat. “Don’t feed me that crap about how he’s only strict to me because I’m his son and how he has expectations for me – we both know that’s not true. He just doesn’t like me because I’m my mother’s son, and there’s nothing I can do to change that…”
He laughed, a short and ugly sound.
“After all, haven’t I tried it all already?”
He really had. After all, Jiang Cheng excelled in martial arts, excelled in academics, and still tried as hard as he could every day, in every way. He was virtuous and talented, and he even took on sect duties to prove his devotion to their family, opting for hard work instead of goofing off with his friends. Unlike Wei Wuxian, that well-known waste-of-space, Jiang Cheng was widely acclaimed to be a prodigy, a rising star –
But none of that helped.
His father always had a reason to turn away from him.
Wei Wuxian needs me more, he’d say. You’re doing fine on your own, A-Cheng; he’s the one who needs help just keeping pace, and you know he doesn’t have your temperament for studying. Tutoring him personally is the least I can do for him…I’ll come to check on your progress later.
He didn’t.
He doesn’t have a mother and father anymore, while you have your whole family with you. You need to be compassionate, A-Cheng, and share the familial joys you already have with him.
Except Jiang Cheng didn’t have those joys. He had a living father, but his father had only one son in his heart and it wasn’t Jiang Cheng.
Of course I checked first if Wei Wuxian is hurt, his father had snorted when Jiang Cheng’s mother confronted him over having done just that. He’s weaker than A-Cheng; I already know A-Cheng will be fine! A-Cheng doesn’t need me fussing over him, he doesn’t need my attention.
Jiang Cheng had never wanted anything more.
Once, when he’d been a child, he’d pretend to be bad at something, hoping that his father’s words were true and that he was simply being sympathetic to Wei Wuxian’s plight – only that didn’t work, either. His father had seen through his childish schemes and scolded him for ‘mocking’ Wei Wuxian, which hadn’t been Jiang Cheng’s intention at all, and worst of all his mother had blown up at him, enraged, angry that he would deny his own talents. His mother, who was always on his side, but who was always so angry; angry at her husband for not loving his son, angry at him for not loving her, angry at Wei Wuxian for stealing Jiang Fengmian away from them…
It wasn’t Wei Wuxian’s fault, though. Jiang Cheng knew that.
He knew that Wei Wuxian loved him, that he would do anything for him, that he only tried as hard as he did for him – as if he thought that having some talent of his own would at least provide some justification for Jiang Fengmian’s indifference.
It’s just that sometimes…sometimes, that wasn’t enough.
“I just wish there was something I could do to make it up to you,” Wei Wuxian said, drawing Jiang Cheng’s attention away from his gloomy thoughts. “Rather than always burdening you.”
“You’re not a burden,” Jiang Cheng said, shaking his head. “And don’t you dare worry about that! If you even think about doing something crazy, I’ll be the first one angry with you…”

Good morning I am thinking about how Jin Ling continuing to call Jiang Cheng “jiujiu” makes it easier for him to slot in an address for Wei Wuxian without having to change anything. This could probably be a metaphor for the ways that JC and through him JL don’t let go of things and how that’s a huge part of what lets WWX get his happy ending but also. You see the legendary and ferocious Sandu Shengshou and then this full teenager calls him the uncle equivalent of “mommy”
YEAHHHHH I LOVE THIS ABOUT THEM. it really is the equivalent of calling for his mommy/daddy because he didn't grow up with his actual parents -- his jiujiu was his parent. it does make me kinda sad to think he probably can't do that as much post-canon, or at least in the public eye, since he has to become Jin sect leader and present himself like a mature person that should be taken seriously. he's already so young -- it would not be good for his reputation to be so informal and childish when referring to a fellow sect leader. but I think in public or around his friends, he still calls him jiujiu, because Jiang Cheng will always be that to him :')

Today I got a notification that someone tagged one of my posts "he's just a family pet they trained to defend their kids" and at first I was like oh haha this is probably in response to when I called Liu Qingge bingqiu's pet right funny. And then I clicked on it and it was actually on my post about wwx having privilege in the cultivation world due to his status in the Jiang family and I was just like hm.

just a thought prompted by an incomplete fanfic i just read, but…
I really don’t like the idea of Jiang Sect Leader wwx. Something about it just feels… dirty, almost, be it the way it almost removes jc, or dishonors him, or traps wwx irrecoverably to the Jiang Sect, or forces lwj to join the Jiang in the event that Wangxian still happens, or whatever else, but i just don’t like it much, despite wwx being sect leader meaning he gets to keep his core (which i usually greatly condone).
But. I never thought about WWX becoming acting sect leader, after Jiang Cheng loses his core. Which really could be seen as the ideal solution, debatably. Wwx leads the sect until the war is over, at which point JC can take over, or at least take over the decision-making part of the job. As head disciple it wouldn’t be TOO out of the question. I think this is the only way I could see a “wwx leads the Jiang sect” au sitting right with me.

Part of Exploring Tropes: Time Travel
Summary: When Wei Wuxian activates the travel array, he doesn’t expect to be sent back in time, and certainly not to the lectures in Cloud Recesses. Kay's comments: Just a good old time travel story where everything goes well! Really loved this combination of people who travelled back in time and loved how Wei Wuxian was instantly not ready to take anyone's shit anymore and instead went to live his best life. Good for him! Good for all of them! Featuring a nice flavour of Sect Leader Wen Qing. Excerpt: “Wei Ying, you stayed.” “Of course. How could I leave?” Wei Wuxian replies without missing a beat. “After all, Lan-er-gonzi hasn’t shared a meal with me.” It’s surprising how easily he falls into his usual teasing. “I have.” Wei Wuxian laughs. “I would remember if that was the case.” “Right.” Lan Wangji tone is oddly dejected. As if he were expecting another reaction. Lan Wangji doesn’t wait for a reply and starts to walk away. Could it be . . . ? There’s only one way to confirm it. Wei Wuxian needs to act before Lan Wangji leaves. “Wait.” The command makes Lan Wangji turn around. Wei Wuxian looks directly at him and hesitantly asks. “Hanguang-jun?” Lan Wangji's eyes widen slightly, then he inclines his head. “Mn.”
pov wei wuxian, canon divergence, no bloodbath of nightless city, time travel, time travel fix-it, cloud recesses study arc, everybody lives, fluff, romantic fluff, jiang family dynamics, no sunshot campaign, sect leader wen qing, fluff and humor

Ive been cooking up some wonderful jiang family household dynamics for vampire xicheng au
Jfm and jyl r jiaoren and the fact that jc is not has always been a bit of an issue (possible cheating by yzy?? No, but it comes up in arguements ab wwx being jfm’s bastard :/) and jc is v insecure ab it
wwx is still in a horribly awkward position, but jc not being in direct competition w him and both jc and jyl loving and being doted on by their new brother helps things a lot
things get a lot better after the three take over the family apothecary shop and work really well together, each doing an essential role of the business rather than just one person taking the helm
they r still the closest three in the world ;_;
wwx feels v insecure and defensive re jzx bc like jc re lwj, he feels like hes being replaced and also jzx is a husky werewolf
jc convinces and accompanies wwx to therapy for his cynophobia later
Jc is trans and before his egg cracked, he was torn bt wanting to be a “tomboy” and be One of the Boyz w wwx but also feeling like he has to be like Yanli to get his fathers approval and love
wwx is super down w jc being a tomboy and is super protective of him, which grates on jc a little after he comes out but they talk ab it
wwx helps organize jc’s top surgery by wq (also does not realise that jc and wq dates for years)
Jc and jyl r in more direct comparison which and b/c of it, jyl feels like she should be more assertive and abrasive and jc feels like he should be more feminine and soft-spoken
Jc starts transitioning post vampire turning but just never tells his parents who r abroad/ is putting off coming out at all costs bc
A) jfm already has a son and theres no way jc could ever compare and itd feel like a confirmation of his failure to be a good daughter/child and earn his fathers love
B) yzy is proud of jc for being a strong, assertive “woman” and coming out would feel like letting her down or some sort of betrayal
the Jiang parents r going to marriage counseling during their absence bc after nearly losing everything they took a step back and were like our last memory of our children was almost a horrible argumentative family dinner and we dont want that and need to do better
Jc finds that he loves being a brother ;_;
when jc’s feeling sad ab being a vampire, jyl grabs his face to show his fangs and smiles, showing off her sharp jiaoren teeth and says ‘we match now!’

Devotion of Love Chapter 15 - Severing the Connection
Chapter 15 is out! Things start to shape up, Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji are ready to end the dual cultivation of the brothers.
Unrelated I have a question. Would anybody -besides my sibling- want to read the seven chapters that got yeeted during the writing process?
Anyway, under the cut is an excerpt of the chapter.
The conference came to an end a few days later. Jiang Cheng sent his disciples away with the reason he had something to talk about with the Second Jade of Lan. That was how they found themselves inside the Jingshi. Wei Wuxian had actually been sent into a few free days to rest, after his work on the conference was finished and Lan Zhan was mostly left alone from his sect anyway.
„Explain it again?“, Lan Zhan requested, a small tremor visible in his hands.
„Aiyo, you don’t need to do that, if you‘re unsure“, Wei Wuxian tried to deflect. They had this discussion only half an hour before, but he was alright with repeating it. The glare he got from Lan Zhan and Jiang Cheng was very impressive. „Alright, no need to get so scary you guys. Lan Zhan will hold me down, while I sever the last connections I have with my core. After that, depending on what happens, he will make sure that the core is fully integrated into Jiang Cheng. We will probably need some medical help after that as well, that will also be Lan Zhan’s responsibility. You‘re sure, we don’t want to wait, until I have the thing with Wen Ning sorted out?“
„Mn. The sooner the better“, Lan Zhan answered, getting an agreeing nod from the Jiang sect leader.
„Alright. A-Yuan will be with Zewu-jun for the next few days, it should give us time to reorientate ourselves, after our dual cultivation is severed. Now that we all know what the plan is, we should start. Lan Zhan, where would you have me?“
„Here“, he said and opened his arms right where he was sitting on the floor. Nervously swallowing Wei Wuxian lay down on the floor and into the arms of his love. He let the embrace calm him and knew he was safe in this embrace. He listened until Jiang Cheng lay down on the floor as well, right beside them. Then he started to calm his breathing and his heartbeat, going into semi-meditation.
