it’s always “your redemption is something you have to work towards for the rest of your life” and never “how was the unhinged spiral into evil? the unhinged spiral into evil looked fun”

the double-edged sword of fuffy is that as much as i want them to be canon so bad, i feel like an official confirmation would severely limit the reading of their dynamic.
because the “i’m obsessed with you and i want to be you but i also can’t stand you yet we are the same person but we’re also not and no one else understands what we go through but you don’t understand me at all and now we’re enemies for reasons that could’ve be avoided but were also always inevitable but now years later we’ve both changed and grown and still have a complicated history and we don’t know how to act around each other but i deeply care about you and believe in you and we’re now fighting on the same side again and we can make jokes about our past” dynamic is so much more of a mindfuck when there’s no official label on them and they never talk about their feelings towards each other

@stellernorth left these tags on my recent post about faith potentially going to lilah, instead of the mayor, after ‘consequences’
Tumblr media
and of course i thought about how lilah wasn’t truly happy, and the majority of what she did for W&H was for her sick mom in the hospital. but then i started thinking further, and... what do we actually know about lilah? does ATS go into her backstory at all?? i feel like i know next to nothing about her, outside of when we see her on screen. lilah appears in 36 ATS episodes, 10 more episodes than all of faith’s buffyverse appearances. and faith is known for not wanting to open up or talk about herself, yet both shows give us a treasure trove of backstory for her. but for lilah it’s like -- she’s an evil lawyer, her salary pays for her mom’s treatment... *crickets*

i think a way btvs could’ve made riley more interesting is if they had him join the military/initiative/a similar training program (run by decades-long family friend maggie walsh) at an early age, around 13. and he enthusiastically enlists because his whole family is military, so that environment is all he’s ever known, and it’s expected of him to join what is essentially a junior version of the initiative.
in this version of the story, the initiative’s plan to create human-demon hybrid soldiers is well-known and actually normalized. walsh and her team present the idea of imbuing young kids with demon aspects as something to envy and idolize, because they are trained to fight evil. riley (along with all the other recruits in the program) work as hard as they can, because only the best of the best get chosen to receive, how they see it, “super cool demon powers.” and this could be tied to the original creation of the slayer – comparing how a young girl had demon aspects forced upon her and, up to buffy’s day, was made to live a dangerous, solitary, short life, VS these young boys who were raised and trained in an environment that supported them, willingly striving to receive powers that they think are just going to make them like their favorite comic book hero. and maybe by the time riley meets buffy, his feelings of inferiority regarding her slayer status are tied to his not having been made part-demon yet like some of his other friends in the program.
of course, the twist is that the human-demon hybrid soldier program is not all it’s cracked up to be. riley’s heard rumors over the years that being part-demon is more of a curse than a blessing, but he doesn’t believe it because he’s naive and wants to believe in what all the adults in his life have told him and raised him up to be. but one day he witnesses something horrific happen, like his half-demon friends turn violent and kill each other, and he’s completely traumatized by it, but of course walsh already spent so much time grooming all these junior trainees (with riley being her favorite) so she whips up some brainwashing technology and uses it on all the kids to make them forget about the incident. by the time we see him in college is when the tech starts going awry, and riley’s traumatic past starts cracking from the inside of his subconscious. about halfway through season 4, he starts acting erratically and spirals out because of it. he eventually leaves the initiative and does NOT rejoin when they ask.

faith makes angel watch goncharov because she’s obsessed with it. he doesn’t get that it’s a satire and keeps complaining about how it’s an inaccurate representation of the mafia. she knows the real reason he hates it is bc he wishes he were goncharov and is actually katya

oh it took me entirely too long to realize that angel is to spike as buffy is to faith... angel is spike’s grandsire and buffy is faith’s grandSLAYER... angel and spike are mirrors and buffy and faith are mirrors and faith and angel mirror each other and she and buffy mirror spike too... the buffy/faith/spike/angel continuum is hurting my brain. and they’ve all fucked each other essentially. tho faith was two seconds away from jumping spike and angel on separate occasions and the PTB graciously did not allow it

this is no shade at all but omg every day i wonder how buffy got into northwestern... she frequently missed class to slay/stop evil, got kicked out of school twice, had no extracurriculars, probably few to no recommendation letters besides giles... she must’ve had a strong as hell essay (can’t write about being the slayer tho) and test scores

ignoring the fact that she actually wanted to die but faith was such a drama queen for throwing herself off that building... she said “oh yes this is the part in the story where The Villain makes a flashy Dramatic Exit™ this is my chance” and proceeded to fall as gayly as possible
