Not to like, project as an eldest daughter or anything, but watching grown women play children is so revealing of what it’s like to be a daughter. Both Izzy and Siobhan have been daughters. Their lives have given them history and experience and desires for what being a child means, and that can’t be erased from the fictional characters they chose to inhabit.
Siobhan chose to play an eldest daughter’s escapist fantasy. Jaysohn is totally focused on himself. Jaysohn isn’t worried about secrets, he’s not literally losing sleep to figure out what’s happening in his family. He’s not thinking about his mom at all when he jumps into a bear. He gets hungry and bites down and doesn’t worry at all about what any of it means or how it impacts others. At every turn, Jaysohn flatly rejects the chance to be aware and alert to the nuances of his family. He is an eldest daughter’s fantasy that you can be important and integral to your family without having to spend every waking second being so aware of everything happening around you. You can make selfish choices and leap without looking and just exist. You do not have to be burdened with the need to unravel the world around you just to keep everything together.
While Izzy tailor made a character to figure things out. Lila needs to know what the blue is. She needs to know all the secrets of her family so she can understand what is happening. The most important thing in the world is knowing what is being kept from her because then maybe she can make it better. She takes her mom’s side against her dead dad, and explains big scary ideas to her brother, and looks to her mom before jumping into danger. She never acts without thinking of the world and people around her.
If you asked an eldest daughter what being a child is like, Jaysohn is who we want to be and Lila is who we are.

I'm learning so many fun new traits through this series. I didn't even know Harengon existed but lucky footwork and rabbit hop suit stoats just fine as well. also love that 'stoat mom' is one of tula's traits and brennan was trying to get that to mean he could get a full rest on like 3 hours of sleep

okay so imagine you're a 7 year old lonely only child with asthma and inhalers don't exist
it's the middle of the cold war and your mom works handling super secret lab stuff so she drops you off at daycare every day, and you just do your thing
then one day two 10 year olds rock up like "hi. our old house was destroyed with biological warfare and everyone we know died. then we took apart a tank with our bare hands." the girl can read at a college level and the boy does a kick flip and sticks a perfect landing even though his sister punched him in the dick at full power halfway through
they say "hey, you're cool. come cut class with us?"
the daycare teacher has no idea what to do with them and just lets them take you away from class
you get a little wheezy and they say "oh man, have you tried an inhaler?" and your asthma is magically fixed (for 15 minutes)
anyway Lukas from Burrow's End did nothing wrong. given the circumstances I also would pledge alliagance to Jaysohn and Lila and tell them about my mom's cool job she said to never talk about

the season of siobhan is far from over with adaine returning to us next month (!), but let's stop down and acknowledge what an absolute joy jaysohn has been. i loved everything siobhan did, so in character not only with her words but with her physicality. i looked forward to every moment jaysohn was the focus. she is such an anchor at the table even when she's playing goofier characters.

Breaking News: Olympics consider whether or not to invite stoat athletes next year.
After the shocking win of Jaysohn Lastname last week, conversations about letting them compete in next years competition have commenced.
“The fact that he broke the record on his first try is astounding,” Peter Ueberroth, chair of the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee, said.
Lastname’s long jump measured at 14.7 meters, almost doubling the previous record of 8.9 meters.
Bob Beamon, previous record holder, argued that it wasn’t a fair competition.
“It’s like letting a cheetah participate in the 100 meter dash. There’s just no way for a human to win,” Beamon said.
It did come to a surprise that the stoat was able to jump so far. While the other competitors only had two legs to run on, each step was longer than a stoat.
Nevertheless, when Lastname went up to jump, he suddenly grew large, blue arms, and used them to hurtle himself the impressive distance.
When asked how he did that, Lastname simply said “Jaysohn rules!”
According to Dr. Tara Steel, stoats are able to absorb and use radiation for their incredible feats.
This has led to some questions about how safe it is for these stoats to compete. Dr. Steel has previously said that the radiation is only a minor danger, releasing radiation comparable to that released by the sun.
“Yeah, it should be fine,” Dr. Lila Lastname, Jaysohn’s sister and first stoat physicist, said.
The UN has currently stalled in recognizing the land within Ukrainian borders as it’s own country.
Jeane Kirkpatrick, US ambassador to the united nation, explained that there is very little political gain for such a move.
“These stoats are just little guys,” Kirkpatrick said.
There’s also the problem that these stoats have very little economic or social ties with the rest of the world.
“It also feels a little weird to have a country named Stoat Place.” Kirkpatrick explained. “I think it would help their efforts to change the name.”
“We are not changing the name,” Thorn Vale, Stoat Ambassador, has repeatedly said.

Ava: oh, you can say all of the swear words that you can. I'm a cool grandma.
Lila and Jaysohn gasp
Lila: fuck
Jaysohn: shit
Lila: shut up!
Jaysohn: pants!
Lila: hell!
All: pants *laughing*
Siobhan: I panicked!
Lukas: pants yea, let's roll!
Brennan: you pants with me again and I'll pants you right in your pants
Rashawn: don't pants me man

Burrow's End is an absolute masterpiece.
In the span of ten episodes Aabria and Co. weave an exciting and emotional adventure story about a family of sentient stoats. It delivers huge laughs, interesting societal criticism, remarkably emotional and well-acted scenes and concludes with a series of epilogue scenes that feel appropriate for each character, some heartfelt and subdued and others bigger than life and all the funnier for it.
Siobhan and Izzy play the perfect pair of siblings. They fight and argue but they also love each other. Jaysohn (Siobhan) looks up to Lila (Izzy) and believes she's the smartest stoat in the world (and by the end she probably is) and Lila hypes up her little brother's athletic skills. They both fully embodied these kids and I could watch them do fun stuff for more episodes. Give me a version of Saved by the Bell with them. Stoat by the Bell.
Brennan and Rashawn, playing sisters, also knock it outta the park, showing a more mature sibling dynamic. Brennan portrays Tula as the quintessential overtired single mother of excitable kids, and Rashawn as younger sister Viola straddles a very interesting line of being intimidating to outsiders but very much more naive and looking to her older sister when she starts a family.
Jasper as Thorn, a guy everyone just lets be a cult leader because he really wanted to, is fantastic. His is a difficult role as the only non-blood relative. Jasper plays Thorn with such real humanity of a guy in over his head and letting his ambition wife call the shots, but also one who agrees with her goal, really loves her and has moments of real menace. He has some very funny scenes, his big speech is perfect, and I just enjoy him.
Erika is wonderful. They play the epitome of generational trauma as many have said but as much trauma as Ava has, she is also loving and willing to learn. The fact Erika took this adversarial role is incredible. The tense dramatic scene primarily between Ava, Tula and Viola is amazing. They act their asses off and make hard choices that I imagine are difficult even for such an experienced player.
Aabria's DMing always feels fun. She doesn't get bogged down in the rules. She knows them. She plays by them. But as a master, she knows how and when to break them too. Her seasons on Dimension 20 have all had a tenseness, a particular edge to them that can give me anxiety during dramatic scenes between two characters. It always feel like one of her NPCs may say something devastating and the tension between characters reaches really thrilling heights. This is present in other seasons, but I don't think anyone does it as well as she does. The first season of hers to have battle maps, Aabria really swung for the fences and gave us some of the wildest maps to date.
Shout out to Carlos Luna's voice acting. He did an incredible job. And shout out to the whole crew who have put together one of the best seasons of D20. They keep finding ways to build on what's come before and they should be commended for it.
Dimension 20 is most successful when the concept is very streamlined. They don't do huge 100 episode campaigns capable of handling huge winding complex narrative, but short focused D&D stories, which is why many of the Side Quests have been so fantastic. They embody this philosophy most clearly, but it's apparent in the most beloved Intrepid Heroes seasons as well—John Hughes/High Fantasy, Game of Thrones/Candyland, Retrofuturism, Film Noir but in a Brain... Burrow's End fits this perfectly. It's streamlined concept paired with great storytellers and great chemistry sets it up to be a smash hit before it begins. And goddamn does it deliver.
Thanks Stupendous Stoats!

Spoilers ahead for the finale!
An aspect of the final battle that got lost after Viola's amazing attack, was the fact that Tula nearly killed her son. And that, I think, is something I would really like to delve my teeth into, to properly look at what happened.
The thing that struck me the most during Tula's attack on her son, was that Jaysohn did manage to snap her out of it. In the context of the story, Jaysohn grappled his mom to get her to stop, and even after getting viciously bit by her, he still managed to get her back to herself. He managed to get to his mom fast enough, and used himself to protect the others from the mindless being Tula had become. And, even when faced with near death, this little kid manages to get back up and attack the creature that did this to his mother. Not once did he blame her, having understood enough about the situation to realise his mom was not in control. He knows, he understood, that this was Phoebe, not Tula. And so, the moment he is able to free his mom, still wounded and near death's door, he goes after Phoebe so that his mom won't be taken again.
Tula, however, was aware of everything she did to Jaysohn. She was painfully aware of how badly she hurt her son, how she nearly killed him. And, as Brennan describes;
Tumblr media
She is broken, in a way she has never been before. She nearly killed her baby, used as a puppet because she's alive when she should have been dead. The Blue that keeps her alive is what nearly caused her to kill her son. Tula nearly lost everything, yet, once more, it was hope and love that brought her back once more. Her son brought her back.
However, she was silent for the rest of the battle until Phoebe finally fell, and Jaysohn nearly died. She was quiet, too horrified with what she nearly did. Perhaps, had more time been afforded to that moment with Tula and Jaysohn before he decided to retaliate against Phoebe, there would have been...something...that went on. A focus on the fact that it was Tula who went for another member of their family, whilst Ava went for the ground and the reactor. What would that do to her, I cannot help but wonder. What did that do to her, in the immediate aftermath, when she could slow down and process what happened. She must live with the knowledge she nearly killed her own child, and that, had he been just a little weaker or just a little slower, she would've succeeded. She might have been able to bring him back, like she did with Sybil...but she would have to live with the knowledge that she took her son's life. And that thought is horrifying.
Yet, it makes her gentleness with Lukas later all the more significant. Even with the blood of her son on her hands, she still chooses to hope for a better tomorrow. She still chooses to give Lukas - and herself - another chance, another tomorrow. Bad things could have happened, but they didn't, and they all made it out. The "what ifs" will remain in the shadows, in the nightmares, but in the daylight, she will keep her head high. It doesn't lessen the impact of her deeds or her burdens, but it can make them bearable. And, with the addition of her son's refusal to blame her, it makes it just the little easier. She deserves a new tomorrow, too.

Thanks to her scene before going to sleep and her conversation with Tula i think we got a great look at Viola's envious nature and her slightly unhealthy need to be loved and to have control over the situation and I think that's really interesting
When Tula had Jaysohn and Lila Viola felt left out because Tula loved them more than she loved her, so she seeked out someone who would love her as fiercely as her family once did
And she found that someone,Thorn adores her,but she is still not satisfied. She is envious of the love and admiration that the Lokura have for him and sometimes wishes to take his place.
She says that one of the reason she thought that it would be a good idea to have a litter it's because people would have started to see her as someone who had to be taken care of
Viola deeply loves the people in her life but she is also impossible to satisfy and ambitious to a sometimes scary degree

Here's kind of an esoteric one for you:
What five rolls in D20 do you wish had gone another way, up to and including wishing for a miracle nat 20 for Lapin or whatever else? (My own list, perversely, is mostly made of wishing successes had been failures)
oh damn that's one hell of a question. god there have been so many rolls i'm SURE i'm leaving out great options. (i'd love to see your list, as well)
1- Lapin miracle 20 in the cathedral, specifically on his last possible roll. so many levels of narrative satisfaction, in addition to, of course, i just want him to have lived. i almost left it off the list as too easy an option, but no, it really is the single roll in the entirety of d20 i wish had gone differently the most. i also could have said keradin rolling 3 less damage, for lapin to survive on 1 hp and thunderstep out, but no i want him to have gone down and been brought back up (brennan would have flavored the SHIT out of it and it would have been so cool)
2- Jasper's Thorn Whip last night. Maybe it's only so high because of recency bias, but I want blood. I want to see how Tula, a redemption paladin who ripped out the stoat's throat without a moment's thought or hesitation for hurting Viola, would react to Jaysohn dying there. How much would she punish herself for saving Lila, even though it was really the only choice she had, she couldn't have gotten to Jaysohn in time. Or if she'd blame Thorn for failing to save him, when he'd pushed back against her and said the kids can't be sheltered all the time.
3- Brennan's 9 in the Great Hart Hunt. "high roll is wild, low roll is honorable" So many of ruehob's issues were what the dice established here- being unable to challenge the rules of propriety and honor and duty they both were ruled by. I want to know what would have happened if that had happened earlier. Maybe them getting together would have been healthier? Probably not though lol
4- Murph's 19 deception in acoc ep 1. WHAT WAS THE DECEPTION FOR? I have my guesses- the context was Ruby getting Lazuli's bow, so it was likely something to do with Theo's feelings about that and Laz, but we don't know and that still kills me.
5- Rowan catching Ricky in the TUC finale. If she'd failed by 5 or more, they'd both be going into the storm, and from what I recall, the party absolutely did not have the time or resources to save both of them, maybe not even either.
honorable mention: Gorgug getting a nat 20, not a nat 1, to figure out how to give the Hangman a butt hole to shit in Chungledown Bim's mouth. That would have just been hilarious.
