RESEARCH BLOG 1:

When confronted with the project brief for the first time, I couldn’t help but think of the infamous Sphere in Las Vegas. It’s a massive dome that hosts all kinds of events and creates a truly immersive experience.

While we don’t have quite the same budget for our little project, it goes to show the power of technology and spectacle to create a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

RESEARCH BLOG 2:

For inspiration prior to the actual beginning of the project, I made my way to London over the weekend to visit some immersive experiences and to get some time away from campus. As our programme leader recommended stopping by the Outernet London experience, that was first on the list.

After exploring the city for a few hours, I decided to pop into a theatre to watch Poor Things, which had some really stunning cloud effects. The shift and shimmer of them during the film feel similar to an Aurora Borealis, if it were somewhat made of pollution. Maybe we can work this effect into our project somehow?

RESEARCH BLOG 3:

Another inspiration from Las Vegas I’d like to keep in mind for this project is the Meow Wolf series of immersive projects. This company has a history of excellent work, but the particular exhibit I’d like to visit one day is Convergence Station.

This exhibit guides audiences through an alien world, plunging them into places unknown through sheer stylistic wonder. Our team so far seems to be creatively driven by bright and colourful work, and I feel this sort of dreamy style would work excellently in a dome format.

In the activities of our group this week, particularly in making creative decisions for our project, the type of creativity that we experienced aligns with Harnad's concept of "Preparation." Our creative process involved careful preparation, where we thoroughly researched, gathered resources, and analyzed existing elements relevant to our project. As Harnad describes, creative outcomes often emerge as novel recombinations of existing elements, necessitating their availability through thorough preparation.

We recognized the importance of mastering what was already known in our domain, whether it was techniques, aesthetic principles, or thematic elements. By building a strong foundation of knowledge and understanding, we aimed to extend the framework from within, allowing us to push the boundaries of creativity while remaining grounded in the existing context.

I looked deeper into immersive art and found the following examples:

Horizon of Khufu

Ancient Egypt's wonders are brought to life, with visitors journeying back 4,500 years to the Great Pyramid of Giza. Developed by Excurio and Egyptologist Peter Der Manuelian, the tech utilizes archaeological and historical data. During the 45-minute expedition, 'travellers' explore ancient civilization with virtual guide Mona. They ascend the 146-meter-high pyramid, witness mummification ceremonies, and navigate the Nile. The immersive experience offers extraordinary 360-degree views.

Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience

The Arctic Refuge Experience.

Exiting the first chamber, you enter a room with seven large video projections and mirrors. Mist fills the space, and ambient music plays as scenes of polar bears and snowy fields appear on screens. The atmosphere shifts abruptly to newsreels about oil drilling, followed by a call to action. Visitors are then led to a room where they can leave voice recordings for Big Oil CEOs. This installation aims to recreate memories of the Arctic Refuge using fragmented moments, requiring over 100 hours of raw footage and dry ice.

In our group's ongoing journey of creativity, we have now moved into the phase of "Exploration." This phase is characterized by the active seeking of new ideas and inspirations, often through exposure to diverse sources and perspectives. In line with this, I have delved deeper into the realm of immersive art, discovering a variety of fascinating examples that have broadened our understanding and stimulated our creative thinking.

Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit Chicago

The Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit in Chicago offers a unique opportunity to experience Van Gogh's art in a new dimension. The exhibit features a variety of Van Gogh's works, presented in an immersive format that allows visitors to feel as though they are stepping into the paintings themselves. The exhibit also offers a 2-for-1 ticket deal, allowing visitors to experience the Immersive Monet & The Impressionists exhibit as well.

Immersive Art Experiences

The rise of immersive art has seen a variety of exhibitions that allow visitors to step into the world of famous artists. These include "Frida: Immersive Dream," "Immersive Klimt Revolution," "Imagine Picasso: The Immersive Exhibition," "Beyond Monet," "Monet by the Water," "Gaudí: the Architect of the Imaginary," "Chagall: Midsummer Night’s Dreams," and "Dalí: The Endless Enigma." These exhibitions travel the world, showcasing in cities across Europe, Asia, and North America.

metaLAB Exhibition

The metaLAB exhibition in Kansas centers the voices of formerly incarcerated women. The installation features a darkened gallery with a 360-degree projection of the women's insights in a dreamlike, ethereal style. Visitors can contribute their own wisdom to this growing collection, fostering a sense of shared knowledge and understanding.

Area15, Las Vegas

Area15 in Las Vegas is an experiential art and entertainment complex that showcases a variety of immersive art installations. The venue's art experiences include a permanent gallery called Art Island that showcases artwork inspired by festivals.

Superblue, Miami

Superblue Miami is a venue designed to showcase large-scale works that immerse and engage visitors as part of the art experience. The venue includes installations by Es Devlin, teamLab, and James Turrell, each offering unique immersive experiences

Delving into Creative Preparation

In our recent collaborative endeavors within our creative group, the theme of preparation has been paramount. Drawing from Harnad's notion of creative preparation, we engaged in meticulous research, resource gathering, and analysis to fuel the creative process. Harnad emphasizes that novel creativity often arises from a thorough understanding and recombination of existing elements, underscoring the significance of preparation in creative pursuits.

Our focus on mastering existing knowledge within our domain allowed us to innovate while staying rooted in established frameworks. This approach provided a solid foundation from which we could explore new horizons of creativity, leveraging the wealth of available resources to push boundaries and generate novel outcomes.

Exploring immersive art further, I discovered several captivating examples that exemplify the fusion of technology, art, and storytelling:

"Rain Room" by Random International: Rain Room is an interactive art installation that simulates a perpetually raining environment. Developed by Random International, this installation features a downpour of water that ceases to fall wherever individuals walk, thanks to motion sensors. Visitors can navigate through the rain without getting wet, creating a mesmerizing and immersive experience that blurs the boundaries between art and reality.

"TeamLab Borderless" by teamLab: TeamLab Borderless is a digital art museum in Tokyo, Japan, renowned for its boundary-defying artworks. Spanning across various themed zones, this museum features interactive digital projections that respond to visitors' movements, creating an ever-changing and immersive environment. Visitors can explore ethereal landscapes, vibrant flora and fauna, and mesmerizing light displays, fostering a sense of wonder and connectivity with the art.

This interactive art exhibit invites visitors to explore a fantastical universe filled with surreal environments, secret passages, and mind-bending installations. While preparation involves gathering existing elements and exploration entails venturing into new territories, inspiration is the spark that ignites creativity, driving artists to transform ideas into tangible expressions.

In the realm of immersive art, inspiration often stems from diverse sources, ranging from personal experiences to social issues and technological advancements. Let's explore some captivating examples:

"The Weather Project" - Tate Modern, London

"The Weather Project" by artist Olafur Eliasson transformed the Tate Modern's Turbine Hall into an immersive environment that simulated the experience of a sunlit misty morning. The installation featured a giant artificial sun, created using mono-frequency lights and mirrors, casting a warm glow over the space. Visitors were invited to bask in the ethereal atmosphere, fostering contemplation on the relationship between nature, technology, and human perception.

"Submergence" - Various Locations Worldwide

Lijn 2 op de Wolphaertsbocht, 26 februari 1978.

Wolphaert Jansz. was één van de mannen, die in 1410 van de heer van Putten verlof kregen om Katendrecht te bedijken. Samen met Jan Wolphaertsz. werd hij tevens tot ambachtsheer aangesteld. Vóór de vereniging van Charlois met Rotterdam droeg de Wolphaertstraat de naam Groote Singel.

De eerste (primitieve) bewoning in Charlois gaat terug tot voor het jaar 1200. In 1458 wordt het gebied "De R6eijerwaard" waar Charlois in ligt, door Filips van Bourgondië aan zijn zoon Karel de Stoute geschonken. Op 14 april 1462 geeft Karel de Stoute het bestuur weer in handen van Matteys de Buyser, IJsbrand Uyt ten Hage, Arend van der Woude en Anthony Michelsz. van Eversdijck en geeft hun toestemming de grond te bedijken. In dezelfde akte bepaalt hij dat de ingedijkte grond “voortaen heten sal ’t land van Charollais". Deze naam is afkomstig van het graafschap Charolais in het huidige Frankrijk dat ook in het bezit van Karel de Stoute was.

DOC ‘Ode aan Wim Jansen’ in première op sterfdag clubicoon

Het is op woensdag 25 januari precies een jaar geleden dat Wim Jansen op 75-jarige leeftijd overleed. Feyenoord verloor daarmee een van haar grootste spelers allertijden en een icoon van de club. Een jaar na zijn overleden gaat de documentaire ‘Ode aan Wim Jansen’ in première, een productie van Feyenoord en ESPN.

In de documentaire delen Jan Boskamp en John de Wolf indrukwekkende herinneringen die zij bewaren aan hun samenwerking met Jansen. Verder werd ook een bezoek gebracht aan Glasgow, waar ‘mister Jansen’ 25 jaar na zijn successen als trainer nog steeds een grote Celtic FC-legende is. Glenn van der Kraan, nu 'Head of coaching' van Manchester City is zijn voetbalvader ‘eeuwig dankbaar’ zo wordt duidelijk tijdens een bijzonder gesprek in Engeland.

De documentaire, die is gemaakt met toestemming van de familie Jansen, is woensdagavond voor het eerst te zien op ESPN 2, om 23:30 uur na de thuiswedstrijd van Feyenoord tegen N.E.C. Het eerbetoon aan Wim Jansen wordt de dagen erna nog meerdere keren herhaald op de verschillende kanalen van de sportzender.

Schrijver en dichter Remco Campert overleden

Schrijver en dichter Remco Campert is zondag- op maandagnacht op 92-jarige leeftijd overleden in zijn woonplaats Amsterdam. Dat meldt zijn uitgeverij De Bezige Bij namens de familie. Campert kreeg grote bekendheid met het boek Het leven is vurrukkulluk (1961), waarvoor hij onder meer de P.C. Hooft-prijs kreeg. Hij schreef ongeveer 70 jaar voor de Elsevier! Koning Willem-Alexander en koningin Máxima hebben via sociale media de maandag overleden Remco Campert herdacht. Het koningspaar denkt “met dankbaarheid” aan de schrijver en noemt hem “een magnifieke meester van het pure schrijfplezier”. “Hij gaf onze literatuur lichtheid en speelsheid. In zijn werk omarmde hij het leven in al zijn wonderbare veelzijdigheid, maar ook in zijn weemoed”, aldus de koning en koningin.

De dichter, schrijver en columnist bouwde sinds de jaren ’50 een indrukwekkend en veelzijdig oeuvre op. Hij ontving diverse onderscheidingen voor zijn werk, zoals De Gouden Ganzenveer (2011) en de prestigieuze Prijs der Nederlandse Letteren (2014). Volgens de jury bracht Campert ‘lichtheid in de Nederlandstalige literatuur’: ‘Campert is een groot stilist die in zijn werk steeds relativerend en geestig is en daarmee verschillende generaties blijft aanspreken. Bij Campert zit de diepzinnigheid aan de oppervlakte. Hij kan onverbloemd over het geluk schrijven, maar heeft zich nooit vastgereden in clichés.’

Bekende werken zijn, naast vele dichtbundels, onder meer de romans Een liefde in Parijs uit 2004 en Het leven is vurrukkulluk uit 1961, die in 2018 werd verfilmd en in 2011 centraal stond bij de leesbevorderingscampagne Nederland Leest van de stichting Collectieve Propaganda van het Nederlandse Boek.

Amsterdam

Remco Campert werd in 1929 geboren in Den Haag als zoon van actrice Joekie Broedelet en schrijver-dichter-journalist Jan Campert, die vanwege zijn verzetsactiviteiten in 1942 door de Duitsers werd opgepakt en in het jaar daarop stierf in een concentratiekamp. Remco Campert heeft zijn vader, die beroemd werd met het verzetsgedicht De achttien doden, nauwelijks gekend. Na de oorlog verhuisde Remco met zijn moeder naar Amsterdam.

Campert vertoefde ook in Parijs, Blaricum en Antwerpen, maar keerde altijd terug naar Amsterdam, waar hij tot zijn dood woonde met zijn vierde vrouw, Deborah Wolf.

Onlangs werd het gedicht Iemand stelt een vraag uit de bundel Betere tijden (1970) in een campagne tegen de oorlog in Oekraïne vertaald in onder meer het Oekraïens en Russisch door Camperts vaste uitgeverij De Bezige Bij. Het gedicht prijkt sinds 2017 in het Nederlands aan de gevel van de uitgever.

Hoewel Campert in 2013 nog aan Het Parool liet weten nooit te willen stoppen met schrijven, deed hij dat op 6 maart 2018 toch. ‘Hij is moe en oud en heeft genoeg geschreven,’ lieten zijn vrouw en uitgeverij De Bezige Bij weten. Toch zou de schrijfmachine ‘gebruiksklaar’ op zijn bureau blijven staan. Volgende maand zou Campert 93 zijn geworden.

Spijbelen

Zijn vader was de dichter Jan Campert, auteur van onder andere het gedicht Het lied der achttien dooden. Zijn moeder was actrice Joekie Broedelet, onder andere bekend van de gastrollen die ze op latere leeftijd speelde bij Van Kooten en De Bie. Zij gingen uit elkaar toen Campert drie jaar was, waarna hij afwisselend bij een van hen en bij zijn grootouders woonde, tot hij in 1942 werd ondergebracht bij een pleeggezin. Toen de wijk waarin ze woonden door de Duitsers werd afgebroken, vertrok het gezin naar Epe, waar Campert de Mulo bezocht. Het was ook in Epe waar hij in 1943 hoorde dat zijn vader op 40-jarige leeftijd in het concentratiekamp Neuengamme was overleden. Na de oorlog ging hij met zijn moeder in Amsterdam wonen en volgde daar het gymnasium aan het Amsterdams Lyceum. Na te zijn blijven zitten en enorm veel spijbelen werd Remco van school gestuurd.

In 1952 trouwde hij met Freddy Rutgers. Ze woonden enige tijd in Parijs. Terug in Nederland ging Freddy Rutgers in 1954 samenwonen met Gerrit Kouwenaar. Campert trouwde op 20 december 1957 te Blaricum met Fritzi Harmsen van Beek. Hun woning in Blaricum werd een ontmoetingsplek voor schrijvers en dichters.

Eind 1958 ging het tweetal uit elkaar en Campert keerde terug naar Amsterdam. Nadat hij in 1960 met Lucia van de Berg zijn eerste kind, dochter Emanuela, kreeg, trouwde hij in 1961 met Lucia en kreeg in 1963 zijn tweede kind, dochter Cleo Campert. In 1964 verhuisden ze naar Antwerpen, van waar hij in 1966 alleen terugkeerde. Hier leerde hij galeriehoudster Deborah Wolf kennen, met wie hij tot 1980 samenleefde. Toen scheidden zich hun wegen, maar later kwamen zij weer samen en traden in 1996 in het huwelijk.

Werk

Nadat Campert het lyceum verlaten had, voorzag hij een paar jaar in zijn levensonderhoud met het schrijven van reclameteksten en vertalingen. In 1950 probeerde hij in Parijs op straat zijn bundeltje Ten lessons with Timothy te slijten, gebaseerd op het gelijknamige album van Dizzy Gillespie (oplage 25 stuks).

Voorjaar 1950 richtte hij met Rudy Kousbroek het tijdschrift Braak op. In juli van hetzelfde jaar werd de redactie uitgebreid met Lucebert en Bert Schierbeek. Net als het door Simon Vinkenoog opgerichte blad Blurb fungeerde Braak als platform voor experimentele dichters. Na het verschijnen van de bloemlezing Atonaal in 1951, onder redactie van Vinkenoog, werden de deelnemende dichters, waaronder ook Gerrit Kouwenaar, Jan Elburg en Hugo Claus, aangeduid als de Vijftigers. Hoewel ze zichzelf niet als groep zagen en geen manifest publiceerden of gemeenschappelijke visie op literatuur hadden, waren zij allen in verzet tegen de literaire traditie en deelden zij het besef dat een nieuwe poëzie aan het ontstaan was. Campert was de minst experimentele dichter en gold als 'de meest verstaanbare Vijftiger'.

Begonnen als dichter, ging hij in de jaren vijftig uit geldgebrek cursiefjes schrijven voor tijdschriften als Podium, Vrij Nederland, Tirade en Het Parool. In de jaren zestig werden zijn verhalen steeds langer en publiceerde hij ook romans. Zijn werk bevat veel autobiografische elementen en is vaak cynisch of ironisch. In de jaren zeventig voelde hij een fysieke afkeer van het schrijven en publiceerde hij vrijwel niets nieuws. Wel ontving hij in 1976 de P.C. Hooft-prijs voor zijn poëzie. In het juryrapport staat hierover: 'Het hele poëtische oeuvre van Remco Campert overziend, is de jury onder de indruk gekomen van de persoonlijke kroniek van de jaren 1950-1970 die erin is neergeschreven. De hachelijke en belachelijke feiten van deze levensperiode zijn door de dichter onvergetelijk geboekstaafd.' Er kwam pas in 1979 een einde aan zijn schrijversblok met de dichtbundel Theater en de verhalen in Na de troonrede.

Ter gelegenheid van zijn lange verbintenis met uitgeverij De Bezige Bij werd in juni 2017 door Campert zelf een deel van zijn gedicht Iemand stelt een vraag onthuld, dat op de gevel van het hoofdkantoor van de uitgever was aangebracht, Campert op de gevel. Op 6 maart 2018 liet zijn uitgever weten dat de dan 88-jarige Campert besloten had te stoppen met schrijven. Er zou geen medische reden zijn. Af en toe verschenen er in de Volkskrant nog wel 'notities' van zijn hand.

Campert heeft in totaal 12 van de meest uiteenlopende prijzen gewonnen en echt een onbeschrijflijk aantal boeken en gedichten gemaakt. Dit artikel is al 1300 woorden dus ik zal jullie de collectie besparen.

Dichter en schrijver Remco Campert is op 92-jarige leeftijd overleden. Hij maakte 4 jaar geleden al bekend dat hij stopte met schrijven, hoewel er daarna nog wel notities verschenen in de Volkskrant van zijn hand. Campert wordt gezien als een van de belangrijkste naoorlogse dichters, maar brak bij het grote publiek echt door met zijn roman Het leven is vurrukkulluk. Ook de verschillende verhalenbundels die hij daarna publiceerde werden goed verkocht en van de opbrengst kocht Campert een notariswoning in Frankrijk. Het poëtische werk van Campert werd in 1976 bekroond met de P.C. Hooftprijs. In die tijd kampte hij echter ook al tijden met een writer’s block, iets waar hij n de jaren 80 van verlost was. Campert was de zoon van Jan Campert, die eveneens dichter was en bekend van het verzetsgedicht Het lied der achttien doden. Zijn vader heeft Remco Campert echter nauwelijks gekend, aangezien hij in 1943 om het leven kwam in het concentratiekamp Neuengamme. Net als zijn vader was Remco een rokkenjager die zeer veel rookte en dronk. Hij is dan ook 4 keer getrouwd geweest en had 3 kinderen, allen uit zijn derde huwelijk.
