273. Inn of the Vaticide - Black Eucharist (Black Metal, 2023)
Art by Jan Baptist Weenix: "The Circumcision of son of Moses", ca 1640
He was a painter of the Dutch Golden Age. His favourite subjects were Italian landscapes with large figures among ruins, seaside views, and, later in life, large still life pictures of dead game or dogs. He was mainly responsible for introducing the Italian harbour scene into Dutch art.

It's always a surprise how much water this paper can take, and good thing because I was reeeeeally fucking around and finding out with the colours. Referenced the pose off of Jan-Baptist-Weenix's Dead Hare and Dog.

To consume art is to be consumed by art
Went to Kadrioru Palace today to get inspired (and maybe ascend). There were few people there, perhaps because it was a Friday morning, perhaps because it was a blizzard outside. I was lucky to find half of the works there to be baroque.
Amongst these paintings I found one nearing perfection.
Jan Baptiste Weenix (dutch, 1621-1659) Italian harbor scene, c. 1650, oil on canvas
This painting latches onto my ribcage unlike any other (with some exceptions). I need this painting to paint my bones.
Some rooms were paintings as well. The obvious example is the main hall, with this breathtaking ceiling
I wanted to die there. Still do.
Notice how both the statue and the figure in the painting point towards the subject, the Allegory of innocents (Tomasso Salini).
Of course the room dedicated to Italian baroque is my personal place of worship. Not worship of God of course.
Nicola Vaccaro (Italian, 1640-1709) Simson and Delilah, oil on canvas. I am not familiar with their story but I witnessed the painting and I nearly died.

"Portrait of a Man"
by Jan Baptist Weenix Dutch, 1621-1660/1669
Oil on copper
Holland, c. 1650
Jan Baptist Weenix was a Dutch Golden Age painter, whose work was in part inspired by classical antiquity.
Portrait of a Man is one of Weenix's most famous paintings, displaying a realistic depiction of the young man in his best clothing, with a carefully constructed landscape background.
In Holland during the mid-1600s, art was strongly influenced by the Dutch Golden Age, a period in which great wealth, scientific achievements, and a thriving economy created a very favorable environment for the growth and development of art.
Portrait of a Man is an oil painting on an oakwood panel. Weenix has used a cool, almost monochromatic palette, relying on subtle differences in hue to bring depth to the painting. The lines are tight and precise, creating a sharp contrast between the subject and the background. The figure is placed in the center of the painting, with a background that has been carefully painted to create a sense of depth and realism.
Weenix's Portrait of a Man is a masterful work of art that captures the spirit of its era. With its realistic depictions and carefully composed landscape, it is a testament to the skill and talent of the Dutch Golden Age painters and an enduring reminder of the wealth and prosperity of 17th-century Holland.

Italian Landscape with Inn and Ancient Ruins, Jan Baptist Weenix, 1658, Mauritshuis Museum
In this Italian landscape with a long city wall and flocks of sheep, a woman is sitting outside an inn. She is looking amiably at us, while plucking a cockerel. The boy on her left is thrashing the dogs with his riding crop, and a bit further on, some travellers are sitting under a pergola in the shade. Jan Baptist Weenix lived in Italy for a few years, where he became familiar not only with the classical ruins, but also with the Mediterranean light. On his return to Utrecht, he developed into one of the most important Romanists.

Hunters Near Ruins, Jan Baptist Weenix , 1648, Cleveland Museum of Art: European Painting and Sculpture
Unlike the other painters whose work appears along this wall, Weenix lived in Rome for five years and painted Italianate landscapes, rather than local, Dutch subjects. The bright light, classical architecture, and exotic-looking garb of the figures all speak to this interest in foreign landscape.
