Hello! Are you interested in the sound of a cutesy young girl who’s always full of energy and cheer? A girl who used to be an infamous and feared gang member, leader of the Bloodstained Angel’s attack squad, who beat up scumbags twice her size on the regular? ...Wait, what? Not gonna lie, i didn't even reach the "dark side of the idol industry" part because i dropped it really fast. I genuinely do not mind the themes. My favourite visual novels are umineko and iwaihime, and they share themes with Oshi no Ko. Incest, teenage pregnancy, murder, but also torture, a girl giving birth to herself for hundreds of years to trap a curse that gives her waking nightmares, a guy who has a child with his daughter, tons of dark themes and terrible thing happening to good people. Thing is, they're not presented as being, you know...quirky. Like no, the incest wasn't a good thing. It led to a terrible tragedy. It was -caused- by a terrible tragedy. The teen pregnancy is a tragedy. It's awful and horrific and written in a way that makes you understand just how awful and horrific these things are.

So I personally do not draw the line at incest, murder or the dark side of the idol industry. I draw the line at the pedophile lusting after a 16 year old being written as a relatable, quirky and sympathetic main character.

Dark themes are perfectly fine to explore, I'm not put off by the subjects OnK tries to talk about. I can't even say that it handles those topics indelicately bc I haven't watched it fully myself. I just know I won't like it, and haven't liked what I have seen, so I'll leave it at that.

The thing that makes me a Hater is going on Twitter and seeing fans laugh off the idea that an incest ending might be even just a little weird.

I actually have not yet! But it's on my to play list, along with Loopers since I recently discovered that game is on Steam. I'm currently playing Fata Morgana and have a huge backlog of vns to play but I could probably be persuaded to play it next.

Speaking of horror visual novels, have you ever read Death Mark and it's sequel NG? Both are really good games, with the second being even better. I highly recommend playing them. The Silent Hill F game that Ryukishi is working on will have monster designs by the person who did the designs in both of those games. Their monster designs are quite frankly amazing. However if you do plan on playing them, I recommend not looking up the designs and going in the games as blind as possible, the games aren't really scary per se but they do an amazing job slowly setting up the atmosphere before you encounter these ungodly creatures.

*reading up on iwaihime* yeah no not gonna go there. i think r07 should kept as far away from eroge illustrators and big budgets with genre expectations as is realistically possible

Reading GSS has made me realize that having a protagonist who actually gets scared is almost essential to horror. I remember Iwaihime not feeling scary at all because no matter what happened the protag barely reacted to it.

Supposedly, I gave up on Iwaihime right before it gets good. A reviewer says the various seemingly disconnected horrors at the beginning are boring, but relatively short, used to set expectations that can be subverted later on.

But I didn’t think in terms of length, I thought in terms of repetition. Here’s a horror that seems like it could be the beginning of a plotline, here’s another horror that’s has nothing to do with it, here’s a third horror that doesn’t really connect to either of them. After five of these things, I wasn’t willing to keep reading in order to see it finally grow a plot.

(Also, the body horror is overplayed. You think I’m scared of a cute girl just because she’s half caterpillar?)
