Oh are people mad at JKR again and calling out her antisemitism? That's funny. No, it is! It's funny when people suddenly care about antisemitism after these 5 months we've had. It's funny when people who threw a grand ol party on October 7th suddenly care about being antisemitic. It's funny when the people who called the kidnapping and rape and largest massacre of Jewish people since the Holocaust justified resistance... suddenly care about the Holocaust. It's funny to hear their "very angry very loud very righteous outrage against antisemitism" when they have:
1) said and done nothing about the hostages being held by Hamas, among which there is a baby and a 4 yo and women being subjected to sexual torture
2) done nothing to pressure the embarrassment called the Red Cross to pass vital medicine to the hostages and actually do its job
3) have gone full Holocaust denial with their denial of the 7th... despite eagerly sharing videos of Shani Louk and Naama Levy and Noa Argamani and the Nova Festival massacre as it was happening, asking Hamas to film their slaughter horizontally and calling victims "hipsters" as the massacre was actually happening
4) called for the murder and expulsion of half the world's jews from the Levant, labeling them all colonizers despite us being indigenous... which is ironic because they certainly don't seem eager to move their own ass and go back to wherever they came from (looking at you Americans, Canadians, Australians - shut the fuck up you hypocritical bitches)
5) attacked, and harassed, and bullied, and even murdered jews all over the world since the 7th. Jewish students were told to hide in the attic from an angry mob, have been unable to walk to class without verbal or physical attacks, have been unable to mourn the biggest massacre of jews since the Holocaust, have had posters of the kidnapped jews that they put up torn down, have had all their attempts at talks about antisemitism and peace derailed and have even been unable to wear their magen david without harassment. Jewish business have been targeted and defaced. And Paul Kessler and Samantha Woll were murdered. Murdered!
6) refused to listen to jews about antisemitism and have eagerly repeated antisemitic conspiracy theories as old as the middle ages like the gullible bigoted little idiots that they are: Jews control the media by distracting Americans from Gaza by using Spotify Wrapped, the Superbowl, and making a Stop Jewish Hate ad (wow do I 'love' it when Americans make fun of their own intelligence by admitting that they're so easily distracted). 7) have ignored literally everything Hamas has done. From the rape and brutal murders and kidnapping (videos of which they published themselves!). To the tunnels. To the theft of aid. To the execution of civilians following humanitarian corridors to safe zones. To using hospitals to hide weaponry, terrorists and hostages. To forcefully keeping civilians in said hospitals even as they try to evacuate, using them as human shields. To shooting at civilians who try to get some aid before it's stolen. To sending 4 yo children to Israeli soldier camps to assess their preparedness. To keeping weapons beneath a child's bed. To enlisting child soldiers. To programming children with Mein Kampf. To launching rockets from next to kindergartens and across the street from a building belonging to the joke we call the UN. so when Palestine fights back by killing civilians, including children, you go: it's justified
but when Russia invades Ukraine and kills civilians, including children, and Ukraine fights back in defense, you go, Ukraine should settle for peace
and you say Israel can just stop the occupation, they have that power and then they could avoid their civilians dying by simply deciding to that, yet you don't see that the Ukraine war stop just as "easily", by Russia stopping the invasion. They invaded, they started the war, just like Israel occupied Palestine, they are the one who can stop it
I know these are two different situations but I cant help but notice how different your approaches are, like adjusting your theory according to who is attacking who.
also, you said it would be strategically impossible (im paraphrasing you) for Russia to stop their invasion, well, wouldn't it also be strategically impossible for Israel to stop their occupation.
Also, if Ukraine settle for peace (I want them to, I generally agree with your points on the topic) and Russia gains something from it (as their peace treaty will most definitely assign a lot of Ukraine land to Russia), then Russia gets the message that invading other countries is successful and a good way to go about things. I mean, obviously the peace work will begin after they settle for peace, preferably working with Russia, im just curious to hear your thoughts.

volodymyr zelensky might have something to say about this comparison. obviously to be clear his comparison is fucking ridiculous, but is illustrative of a key difference--that all of the force of NATO are arrayed behind ukraine (a privilege not enjoyed by palestine) and that the government of ukraine is aligned with NATO rather than its own people--which is why it's selling everything that's not nailed down to the predatory west.
i do of course think that russia should stop the invasion! i respond flippantly to most people asking this because they rarely ask in good faith, but let me say it unequivocally--i'm a communist, i think that the fall of the soviet union was a tragedy and the oligarchic mafia state that rose from its ashes is an insult to everything it stood for. putin is a far-right anticommunist and the oligarchs that he represents are scum. in the case of russia vs. ukraine, russia is straightforwardly the agressor and it would be a good thing if russia withdrew immediately.
but when i talk about the need for a peace settlement, i'm not (no matter how much nationalists and the NATO fandom will yell that i am) advocating for an unconditional ukrainian surrender. i'm talking about the maximalist positions about 'punishing russia' and ensuring some imaginary total defeat that the NATO bloc advocate for and push the ukrainian position towards. the US and their allies have made no secret of they fact that they seek to prolong the war, use it as an opportunity to open ukraine up to US investors, and don't care about ukrainian casualties:

so--people in the west are powerless to do anything to prevent or weaken russian imperialism, short of supporting their own imperialist powers--which, if you care at all about human life or the working class, is robbing peter to pay paul. however, those same bourgeois western governments are the ones supporting the israeli genocide--this is a case in which the Western proletariat can and should mobilize to suppress the imperialism and colonialism of the aggressor, because they live in countries that directly support it.
of course, there are also massive differences in the actual circumstances of the relations between russia and ukraine--russia is not, for example, built on stolen ukrainian land, nor is ukraine an open-air concentration camp whose water and electricity are provided by russia only sparingly, nor has ukraine seen in peacetime regular brutal massacre, invasion, bombing, and murder as palestine does every single year of so-called 'peace' that passes between israel and palestine. the situation of 'peace' between russia and ukraine before 2022 was not one of totally intolerable one-sided massacre, as the situation of 'peace' between israel and palestine has been.
as such, there are in fact multiple parties who can pursue peace in ukraine, including parties that we, communists in the West--who are the people i blog as and for--can pressure and organize against effectively. there is only one party that can pursue peace in israel. the situation is not comparable, either on its face or in the relation the West and as a result communists in the West have to it.

The escalated war of aggression on Ukraine continues and will have its 2 year annual on the 24th of February. Few seem to remember. I can't change much about the war. every war is viciously personal but this war is supposedly happening also in my name as someone who is Russian.
I have a friend from Kharkiv who get's panic attacks when there is a thunder storm. I have a girl in my classes who likes butterflies bc they were the first things she enjoyed when she managed to get out with her mother. I remember a couple from Odessa who told me about waking up from their house shaking bc of bombings. i am watching a Russian imperialist war in my name, removed from terror in my own unshaken house.
Currently I am teaching Ukrainian kids how to speak German and live in Germany. its going okay. But also weird bc what exactly can I teach 9 year olds who already speak 3 languages and fled a war zone. Except that i got yelled at last week for speaking a foreign language, that they need to be careful and that the german fascist party currently has 19% of the public vote according to polls.
Navalny is dead, murdered. Nadezhdyn is excluded from the election. The LGBT are declared an "extremist organisation" in Russia. Me and my Russian friends are facing not travelling back in the foreseeable future, not seeing family members possibly forever. But we are lucky as we are safe and we don't have to worry if Moscow will still exist or not if we manage to get back one day.
A lot of things are going on in the world right now. I am trying to have a piece of me available for people who need me. and i know my life is far from the worst i could experience. in fact i am very removed from immediate terror. it's like watching through milky glass and seeing only the shapes of a fucking war in my fucking name.
those 2 years were pointless. the dying and fleeing to a supposed safe land and fearing thunder storms and shaking houses could have been avoided. this war could just not be. Ethnic Russians never needed protections, especially not by Putin's army of mostly poor, criminalised, brain washed and forcibly enlisted soldiers marching into Ukraine. Russian imperialism can stop any day and it would be over. 2 years later this fact has not changed.
yes, i am tired and sad and can't do anything. but i am also really angry about this war in my name.

In one of your last posts about Matt and Katya, you mentioned Alfred and Ivan’s dynamic, and that perhaps there is more beyond the hate sex they have had.
Do you mind expanding on that? What is your interpretation of their relationship, if it can even be called that?
LMAO god, gonna make me use the two and a half years I spent special interesting my way through Eastern European history on my way to a degree in 20th Century history, are you? About time I did lmao. Alfred/Ivan is one of those ships I don't enjoy purely as a ship, but it's so compelling. Much too compelling to the history to leave out entirely.
So, at the dawn. You have this old state in Ivan, considered backwards and rural by the Western European imperial powers, which has largely lost its verve for even trying most of the time. He has usurped his sister, who built most of their culture and claimed the power he has from the remnants of several cultures and expanded eastwards. And he comes across this young upstart, similarly held on the fringe of the powers of Western Europe. He's had similar obsessions with Jan when the Dutch Republic was new and a lasting one with François when he was the heart of European culture. Moreover, he's not only interested in and admiring of Alfred and the American experiment, but Ivan likes Alfred. Everyone likes Alfred. It's impossible not to like Alfred. There's an affection and attachment, a kind of love if I want to push. By the 19th century, Ivan wished him success because he and Arthur were locked into the Great Game in Central Asia. He spites Arthur, Matt, and Katya by selling Alaska to Alfred when he and Russia can no longer benefit. He's happy to raise a glass to American success. Alfred was touched by the gestures during his Civil War and the purchase of Seward's Icebox.
Afterwards, things declined quite quickly. Between the end of the American Civil War and the beginning of World War One, over 3 million people from the Russian Empire settled in the United States. But less than 5% of them were ethnic Russians. Most are Jewish, Polish and Lithuanian. Feliks mostly stays in Poland, a firebrand devoted to his survival, but Alfred meets Tolys, and he loves him. He lives with Tolys and his memories, perceptions, and opinions. Matt is up to his tonsils in Katya any moment he possibly can be, with a mouth full of their father's loathing of Ivan and a chest heaving with Katya's life. Alfred is increasingly their father's heir. The Pacific acquisition of Alaska was just the first step. If Alfred is the Christ to Arthur's God and lord knows he thinks of himself as a saviour, the Russian empire just looks shittier and shittier.
But he still has that reputation of being an outsider. He's not quite in with the European powers. He brokers the end to Russia's ultimate humiliation against Japan. Ivan, to a certain if somewhat limited extent, believes Alfred's bullshit. The deal is fairer than he would have otherwise gotten. But this is the high point of the pre-war Kiku, and Alfred's strange, tense and intimate relationship and opinion is still vastly with Japan during the war.
Then comes the Russian Revolution and the Polar Bear Expedition. Alfred is keener to do business with Ivan's new government when revolution breaks out. It must be an improvement over the Tsar, surely. He's not entirely in his complete form yet; he gets looped into the Entente's support, but he's pretty vocal about this thin line of hope that this may go well. The way his revolution went. There's this brief moment where Ivan and Alfred look at the world with a thought to a common future. They're looking at each other again with an ancient hope, maybe some mutual admiration. This may work. Maybe Ivan will get his shit together. Maybe Alfred won't become the heir to Arthur's Great Game. Maybe, maybe.
And then it goes up in fucking flames. Even American leftists became disillusioned with the USSR somewhat quickly. He helped lay down new states in the newly free Eastern Europe; God knows Tolys and Matt are doing their best to keep Alfred on-side. It took almost fifteen years, until 1933, for the US to acknowledge the USSR. Alfred is repulsed by the USSR even if he does cool his jets as interwar isolationism has slowed the process of him stepping into the fray as the head of his family.
By World War Two, Alfred is happy to write his redemption story and just dump treasure and materiel at the USSR. He's the balance of power between Arthur and Ivan, and Ivan is delighted to see Alfred snap at Arthur whenever he fucking pleases. But he's also miserable that he is the one dragging himself on his belly over the broken glass and ruins of Eastern Europe and doing the largest share against the Nazis. But there's a little hope that Alfred and Ivan will rule the world when this is over and find common ground in their power. It's only in the waning days of the war when Alfred's clearly suffering from the campaign in the Pacific and Eisenhower lets Zhukov have Berlin, that they shack up in some way or form. Alfred has more hope than Ivan, but Ivan is at least a little satisfied to see that Alfred has had a piece carved out of his idealism by his war against Japan.
It doesn't last. Alfred might be happy to take Arthur down a notch, but when the crown comes upon his head, as has been arranged, he wears it with a certain ease no one expected. Heavy is the head that wears the crown, but what is the weight to a man who fancies himself Atlas and Prometheus all in one. And it comes with the confidence to hate Ivan's ideas and opinions even as he revels in their fucking. Sex isn't love, and the feelings he gets throughout all of it are not love to Alfred. I still somewhat adhere to the thought that McCarthy almost denounced Alfred as both a communist sympathizer and a homosexual in the 1950s for this apparent attachment, but the intelligence apparatus intervened and prevented it.
And that is where I will leave off because I'm damn near at 1000 words RIP.

like don’t get me wrong it’s important to protest and resist in any possible way through boycott marches civil disobedience etc etc but you’re smoking some potent oui’d if you think Biden and Blinken and their hordes of ghouls are more interested in maintaining the approval of voters which they believe they can swing back to them than to make sure that they can sell more weapons to Israel and to ensure that they also get to plunder Palestine’s natural resources off of its coasts. No matter how fucking soulless and hypocritical they sound when they talk about israel defending itself and Palestinians having to be killed because of this, their first preoccupation is their empire. Imperialism ALWAYS comes first. If you only follow public declarations of western officials it might be what you believe but when “insiders” release their tidbits about how things are changing in the White House to politico of all outlets and when they come hand in hand with an additional 14 billion dollars to Israel you should know that it doesn’t make any sense. Armed groups in Yemen and Iraq have officially declared war on Israel, Lebanon is expected to follow suit, so is Iran. Russia has been meeting with representatives of the aforementioned countries and China has been deploying a media arsenal to change public opinion about Israel. I don’t believe that any of these countries are acting because their hearts bleed for Palestinian people. They want to weaken the USA and its Zionist outpost in the Middle East as much as possible. Once again the preoccupation of one party is the empire and how to sustain it so that imperialism remains profitable. The preoccupation of the other party is how to destabilise this empire enough to return to a multipolar world. Palestinian blood will continue to be spilled for this and it makes me sick.

something i'm often wondering about is how much more beautiful and progressive my country could have been without Russia putting its imperialist claws into this rich marvellous place over a century ago. i probably wouldn't be living in Kazakhstan or even born at all then, since half of my ancestors were of those russians that came on kazakh lands to stake their greedy claim and set their own rules
what i can finally talk here about, because half of a year passed and it's not causing me panic attacks to think about or all-encompassing fear that anything i say would have legal consequences anymore, is how my mother was almost legally persecuted for so called "propaganda of homosexuality". my mother, who isn't gay, is the kind of white leftist that uses therapy talk to manipulate her own children, is the person that left the most damage on my self-acceptance of being a queer person. she is a children's theatre teacher and director, who was being accused of directing a play about homosexuality. we, me and you, understand that it's wouldn't even be wrong to do that, you can't make kids gay by showing them gayness. you especially can't by showing them a fucking play about talking walking pillows and blankets that teach kindness. but the actual reason why it was pro-gay to these people was that this kids play had hints of tolerance towards queerness in a different theatre adaptation a few years ago in Russia. not the source material, not writer's notes, just a different director vaguely doing his own interpretation. so the Kazakhstan's parent association found out and flooded social media with fake claims about my mother, wrote a police report and a report to the national department of education. my mother isn't even gay. it was just witch hunt. but you understand how scary that was for me, an absolute queer that is getting a degree in kindergarten teaching, and my brother, a young bisexual. we thought we would have to run
some time after all this mess started we found out that it was an ethnically russian woman born in Kazakhstan who wrote the first report and started this whole thing. a woman who is obsessed with russian news, anti-gay laws and holds her own two kids in a protective bubble of "no freedom, no tolerance, no vaccines". so, you see
i'm am completely sure that Kazakhstan wouldn't be poisoned by this homophobia and anti human rights epidemic, if not for the long strong influence of Russia. they are the reason. maybe we would already have qls filmed here the way they do in neighbouring asian countries if it wasn't for them. maybe most people here wouldn't be so hateful and intolerant. maybe we would have any queer protecting laws at all. i am dreaming of how it all could have been. fuck colonialism. fuck imperialism. fuck Russia

It's killing me how pervasive russian propaganda is. Propals love to claim that the West is hypocrites bc they support Ukraine but not a variety of countries and people they, themselves being from the West more often than not, did not give a shit about before. They would rather blame anyone else: the government they voted for, the media they are reading, - than look into themselves.
This paradigm also ignores:
Massive anti-Ukrainian russian propaganda campaign that is running for ten years now. Chances are, all they heard about Ukraine before the full-scale invasion is Azov, Bandera, Nazis, and that's what they're running with it (especially leftists/tankies who think Greyzone is a reliable source of information). Despite chances are, there are more far-right in power in their country than there are far-right politicians in Ukraine. Despite the massive reform Azov underwent. Despite the voices of our Jewish citizens and academics, despite Muslim soldiers in Azov;
Massive support russia, russians, russian imperialism still gets. For one example (and there are numerous) Australian ABC TV station recently made a documentary based on the point of view of russian invading forces, and it treated everything they have heard from them or seen as a legitimate point of view. Bucha massacre denial, for example. This is not humanization, this is straight-up genocide denial. And I know that UK TV also showed this documentary, it's side by side on their website with the documentary about Ukrainian abducted children. The children - those of them who survived the deportation anyway - are being indoctrinated against Ukraine, right now, trained as soldiers. If you even care;
The obvious reality that after people realized that there's not going to be a WW3 or a nuclear war anytime soon, they stopped caring all that much, if they ever did. Look at tumblr: any Palestine or even Israel-related post gets 20+k notes easily. That's not something that we see nowadays with Ukraine, if ever. And there is more negativity about Ukraine here, or on other social media, than for Gazans. And this is even counting that Gaza is the base for legit terrorist organization that committed a massive terrorist attack against the civilian population and is currently holding hostages. Which is the justification Israel puts down for their attack, and for their massive infliction of civilian casualties - but it's also what happened. Whereas in Ukraine, what happened was a Revolution of Dignity, where the victims, the dead, were the people who protested against the corrupt government and won. They didn't attack civilians, they didn't kill russians, they didn't even ban a russian language. They just didn't want to live in a corrupt country, in a police state, where children can be beaten up by police forces and be sent to a hospital. That's how Euromaidan started, if you even care. And Euromaidan is exactly the justification russia put up for the invasion back in 2014. You get me? HAMAS terrorist attack spiked huge support for Gaza and the Palestinian cause even before there were 30K Palestinians murdered by Israel. Even before one such death. Ukraine's fight to protect its freedom was met with indifference if not hostility.
Nothing of the above means you should not care about Gaza and Palestine. Doing research on WW2 such as the geo-political climate (which was never Really mentioned in my American public school), keeping a copy of the mandate for Leadership on my phone, staying updated on current events, and my very autistic knack for pattern recognition has me fight or flight.
I don't know what WW3 is gonna look like, it may very be another cold war. But it's here.
When we look back on this, we won't say that it started when the US finally took up arms. The war started way before the US was willing to admit there was even a problem.
It will be like WW2, where the US let as many ppl die as the world would allow before they and the other allied forces stepped in.
And just like back then people are asking "why won't the USA or France or the UK do something? Why are they letting it go on so long?"
And the answer is the same as it was back in WW2.
The allied forces themselves were was antisemitic, greedy, and politically driven.
Oh yeah and if you look real close and squint you can also see an oil grab in Iran that happened during ww2. You know "to stop the axis powers" from having oil 🙄
So why would they get involved if they didn't have to?
Remember how they ONLY involved themselves because Poland, an ally to UK and France was invaded?

There are no legitimate targets for Russia in Ukraine. Every attack against Ukranians by Russians in Ukraine is illegal and unjustified. Every single one.
It doesn't matter if weapons were stored somewhere or not. There are no targets within Ukrainian borders for Russia that are in anyway justified by any measure of rule of law or war.
Russia has violated Ukraine's sovereign borders without any attacks on its own soil. That makes every single bullet fired by a Russian against a Ukranian unjustified and act of terrorism.
Period.
Anyone trying legitimize this horror is a genocide denier and not worth listening to for a single moment.
And no Donbas is not a reason. If you think it is, or that it is a legitimate reason not fabricated on lies and misinformation, then fuck you as well.

Every target Russia chooses and hits within Ukraine is unjustified. This war is illegal and unjustified. Ukraine can have whatever military installations it wants within its borders and none of that would justify what Russia has done. Once I thought that "serious nazi problem" was a scarecrow exaggeration that made a easy manipulation for population.
I mean, all the progressive folk calling anyone that mildly disagrees with them "nazi" was a part of a problem. Overuse makes the term less serious.
Also I could clearly see that world believed russian propaganda about "scary Ukrainian nazi cult". There was obviously none, this shit is so marginalised in Ukraine, there was no actual far-right sufficient representation in government or parliament.
I knew that nobody cared for us and that's tough and not right, but I never expected to be celebrated, you know.
But then, in 2022, I suddenly discovered thousands of people, living in safe, "progressive" countries, actually cheering for genocide of Ukrainians. Tons of American and European teens of all colours saying that we deserved every genocide and oppression we faced. Students and academia folk knowing zero, null, NOTHING about Eastern European history that blamed us in settler imperialism and colonisation. My dudes, most of us are descendants of literal slaves (slavery was a thing up to the mid 19 century in russian empire, but hey you're too busy wanking to tolstoy to learn how horribly he abused his slaves).
Along with it, I saw endless self-importance that made faithful liberals or socialists believe it is THEIR right to decide: whose suffering is like a thing this month and whose is so last season. Loud whining about islamophopia that always failed to include Syrians, Nokhchiy, Crimean Tatars, hell, even Iranians and Yemen people who oppose their government (or rather horrible factions in civil war). So I started to wonder if what I saw was allies of Muslims people, or allies of their dictators?
(who am I kidding, you won't fucking believe how different all the activism will be, when russia stops pumping money in most destabilising movements)
So I came to a very painful conclusion.
Nazism is a very big problem. Just not in Ukraine.
It made its way into the heads of young, carefree people of the Western world, that never seen wars and never bothered with history. It has long been poisoning communism, but hey, it's not like all the cool tumblr kids ever bother listening to actual witnesses of communist regimes? It has made its way into weak, polarised liberalism that went into solving every little specific problem, ignoring the global danger of undemocratic ideologies.
But hey, new global war is coming, so people will probably catch up at some point. Probably.

what are your thoughts on Russia’s mobilization and reports that they’re heavily ‘recruiting’ from ethnic minority populations?
What is happening right now is not at all surprising to me, or anyone else who has studied Russia for a while. I have said this before, but it remains an utterly tragic irony that Putin, who is so bent on recreating the USSR/Russian Empire glory days at any cost, is so totally blind to the fact that he's also sending it down exactly the same path to yet another collapse that will set the country and society back for generations. Widespread/forced mobilization in 1917, in order to send more Russian troops to their extremely costly and failing efforts in WWI, contributed to further grievances against Nicholas II and eventually led to the successful revolution/overthrow of the monarchy in October. In other words, it was extremely unpopular last time and I seriously doubt that it's going to be any more popular this time. Besides, if 50,000 actually trained and (somewhat) equipped troops have already been killed, and now they're down to forcibly drafted civilian conscripts with two weeks of training, and over-50 guys in debt who were lured to sign up with the promises of generous bonuses (that, like other promised Russian financial rewards, aren't being paid), against highly motivated Ukrainian troops equipped with NATO weapons... yeah. It's going to be a slaughter, and the only question is whether the Russian public actually starts protesting on a large enough scale, despite the obvious threat of force and repression, to exert actual pressure on the Kremlin and force it to change its mind. But because they're already so committed, and there's not much of a way to be "oops our bad," there's also no way to back out now. I don't know how it'll end, but it isn't going to be good for anyone.
The whole thing is a tragedy on a terrible scale, especially since I don't see any way for Russia as a country to recover from this any time soon. The combined impact of sanctions, global isolation, and all the other (extremely deserved) consequences for this pointless war of old-school genocide and imperialism has undone, and then some, all the progress that Russia has made at integrating into the global community since the fall of the USSR. Because Putin's ego now cannot bear the possibility that he actually loses in Ukraine, after he launched his invasion against every shred of common sense to the contrary, he will act like every Russian tsar of old and throw countless lives of his own people down the drain in a futile attempt to prolong the inevitable. This is also why rabid Western defenders of Russia (a la tankies and their ilk) are just... so... fucking.... stupid. For one thing, if you know literally anything about Russian history, especially post-1917 Soviet history and the ways in which information has been tightly controlled, censored, edited, ideologically distorted, and otherwise used for propaganda purposes, you know that it's absolutely idiotic to trust literally anything the official Russian state and media apparatus says about the war, because it's all lies. Second, the Soviet system was built on the mass repression and (especially in the 1920s and 1930s) mass destruction of its own people, especially those pegged in any way as "traitors" to the revolution. (I suggest Gulag: A History by Anne Applebaum, which goes into this into more depth and casts a horrifying but necessary light on this period.)
As such, the relatively wealthy (by Russian standards) and Europeanized cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg have always existed in a different social universe from the extremely poor, rural, isolated, and persistently underdeveloped Russian regions. So yes, mobilization of Russia's ethnic minorities as cannon fodder, rather than going for the urban city-dwellers directly, also serves Putin's project of building a more racially/ethnically "pure" Russia, and this approach has been supported by Alexander Dugin, the imperialist/fascist Russian ultra-nationalist who is one of Putin's chief advisors. (His daughter was recently killed in a car bomb that was probably meant for Dugin himself.) However, Moscow and St. Petersburg aren't going to escape altogether unscathed either, and the largest protests against mobilization, as has been the case with anti-war protests in Russia overall, have taken place in these two cities. Basically, Putin's (corrupted) social contract with the Russian people is that they let him and the siloviki do what they want and don't try to interfere or remove them from power, and in turn, these actions don't impact on their daily life. But between the slow destruction of the economy via sanctions and now directly forcing ordinary citizens to fight in a deeply unpopular war (all those people who have supported it online are probably likely to change their minds when they're actually asked to die for it), that's fallen apart too.
In short, I see no way for either Russia as a modern nation-state or the Putin regime to survive this. I don't know how long the end will take or what form it will ultimately arrive in, but... yeah, they're all fucked. When you're forcing your own average joes to fight in an imperialist war that's already gone terribly and led to your complete global isolation, then you're in desperation mode. Putin literally only has "I WILL SUPER DEFINITELY USE NUCLEAR WEAPONS AND IT'S NOT A BLUFF!!!!" left as a bargaining tool, which is just an attempt to frighten everyone into backing off long enough to let him try to make this idiocy work. But as I said, everyone in the Russian army who had even some training is already dead, they're using Soviet-relic weapons, morale is shit, the Ukrainians are (rightfully) extremely motivated and riding off the back of recent victories, and throwing a bunch of untrained conscripts into that meat-grinder is going to result in incredible and incredibly unnecessary bloodshed. There are some groups who seem mostly willing to go at the moment (though again, I'm not sure how long that's going to survive contact with reality), and there are a lot who are totally unwilling (see: the current mad rush to leave Russia by any means possible). The problem goes so deep, on so many levels, that yeah, this isn't a fixable situation anymore. The only thing that remains to be seen is how much damage it does, both to Russia and the world, on the way down. Alas.

If y'all want to feel sympathy for the Israelis, you better have it for every single genocider. Slavers and settlers that scalped Natives and Nazis and Imperial Japan and Stalinists and Serbs and the British East India company and white nationalists and Islamic fundamentalists and Hindutvas and Assad's forces and and and.
People do not become genociders because of victimhood. The majority of the worst colonial empires were people who hadn't been oppressed themselves in centuries. Groups become genocidal because they have power and want to take their trauma or paranoia out on someone weaker than they are. Even the ones who aren't gleefully enthusiastic go along with it because the benefits and risks of dissent outweigh your moral conscience. You're not forced to make those choices. That's not what indoctination is. Indoctrination helps dehumanization. It's making it easy to silence every doubt and qualm and instinct for empathy and compassion. But you still choose. You make a conscious decision to see a human being as a vermin to be eradicated. It's easy to do that when you have no incentive to see them as human and no consequences for treating them accordingly.
For fuck's sake, stop using the Holocaust as an excuse for Zionists. Half of them are converts or the children of converts who never lived the Jewish generational legacy of persecution. Most of their families migrated from places where they had a perfectly comfortable lives, and the other half was born in Israel and never knew what being a marginalized minority was like. Israelis are literally the least oppressed Jews in the known world. They victimize Palestinians because colonizers and oppressors live in mortal fear of the people they colonize and oppress, because they KNOW that they're crushing them and have to manufacture all sorts of narratives to rationalize and justify that they're actually the good guys.
Colonization and genocide is a result of power. I and a lot of other BIPOC have been traumatized by Zionists before we ever knew the word for them, because they keep taking out their paranoia of Jewish hate on Black people, Natives, immigrants, Muslims and Arabs and every kind of racial minority that have no systemic power to hurt them. They have such a foothold in the Jewish communities of Europe and its settler colonies (Australia, the Americas), because white Jews have assimilated into whiteness. However conditional their acceptance among white Christians, they have the same racial and institutional power over Black and brown colonized people. Which makes it easy for them to choose Zionism— the legitimizing of white colonial anxiety in place of fear of their oppressor. Antisemitism is their ready and convenient way to rationalize the racism and Islamphobia and racial superiority they already have.
Do you think Jews are the only people who have ever been genocided? The Holocaust was not exceptional, it was exceptionalized by the Western powers to launder their own atrocities that far outstripped Nazi Germany. Look at what they're doing with Ukraine. They're being genocided and colonized and they deserve empathy and help against Russia. But the West isn't concerned about Armenia the same way even though it's also an Eastern European country. They definitely weren't concerned about any of the other countries Russia has attacked or helped genocide (like Syria). Including Ukraine itself before all this. Putin has been attacking Donbas since 2014.
So why now? They care about who's genociding Ukraine, not about Ukrainians. Russia under Putin is very much a threat to NATO and Ukraine is bordered by NATO countries. The Western PR machine still had to make Ukrainians white, because Slavs are ethnically marginalized in Western Europe, and even North America to a lesser degree. They have white privilege over all Asians and Africans and Indigenous people because the colour system of race is based on European colonization, but they have only conditional whiteness in the imperial sphere of both the US and Russia. But because they're ethnically European, the US and Western Europe was able to launch a PR "Look They're Just Like Us!" campaign to elevate them to full whiteness, so that their own citizens would actually give a shit about this country they'd barely heard of before. That's why we're all more concerned about Ukraine than any other Eastern Europeans (we're all conditioned into white supremacy). After that, the US went around thumping its own chest for a full year and half, trying to launder its military image after the twenty year Muslim genocide that was the War on Terror (still ongoing).
This is exactly what they did with European Jews. High-ho, somebody victimized by the Enemy! Dust them off and lookie! They're European! People will give a shit that we liberated them if we make them all white! But uh, do we really want five million Jewish refugees in here? Oh I know, we'll thrown in with those crazy Jewish terrorists that were giving the Brits so much trouble, and give them a state! They're also from Europe after all, and Civilized™, unlike the savages!
And then the liberated Jews accepted doing exactly what the Nazis did to them. Not because they had to! They could have just lived in Palestine, that whole region of the Levant was pretty secular and multicultural. But they didn't see Arabs as human beings! Because Europeans are taught to see Black and brown people as servants and savages! They massacred Palestinians and took the place over because they could and then called it the War of Independence. The first people they victimized after that? Were Arab Jews. They colluded with Arab nationalists to have them ethnically cleansed entirely out of their countries and scooped them up to create a labouring underclass! Put them up in such squalid conditions that scores died!
And did those people look around and realize white Jews were their oppressors and they had far more in common with Palestinians? No. They threw in with their oppressors to help make Palestinians lives a generational nightmare. Because power and assimilation! This is the exact same reason why Zionists has been trying to cosy up to Nazis since before Hitler.
(Oh and by the way? Germans never regretted the Nazis or the Holocaust. The Americans "denazification" was a dead fail. They just used Israel to make a whole dog and pony show of how very sorry they were and how it was a Dark Moment in Their History™ (because nothing they've ever done to colonized people counts). They paid reparations because the West made them, but they never got over the massive post-war genocide the Allies subjected their people to, or the way they carved up the country like a Christmas turkey. But again, did they hold Britain, France, US and Russia responsible for it? Did they acknowledge that the most severe cases of post-war violence came from American GIs? Of course not. Obviously the biggest threat was...the Poles.)
If you really see all those TikTok videos of families dancing to their genocide songs, taunting starving and dehydrated Palestinians and teens lampooning Palestinian mothers grieving their dead children and think "they're also victims because Western imperialists exploited their fear and made them into monsters" then I don't even know what to say to you. That level of infantilization, wilful ignorance and need to turn sadism into victimhood is breathtakingly racist and paternalistic. Even if you believe #Not All Israelis, the point is there's enough Israelis. Also what is even there to feel sorry for?? Are Israelis about to be turned out and shot in the streets? Starve to death? Have their limbs amputated without anesthetic and still die of sepsis? Literally what??
Emotions are signifiers of your own internal biases and perspectives. They aren't indicative of justice or morality. We can't move through a deeply unequal world and believe that compassion is having the same responses, judgements and feelings for everyone. It's not empathy you're feeling for Israelis, it's conditioned philosemitism and casual racism against Palestinians. If you actually followed the videos and images and news coming out of Palestine, you would feel about as sympathetic towards them as Nazis. You would understand that this kind of atrocity doesn't come from trauma or having been victims. It comes from having zero consequences for doing them. It comes from unchecked, gleeful, sadistic power.

i mean if you are russian then your focus should absolutely be on your own governments role in the war and what you can do to fight it! i agree and have never said otherwise. however there's a fundamental difference in what it means to fight russian imperialism if you're living in russia vs. as someone living in europe/the US--the former can be legitimate and powerful anti imperialist action, the latter will inevitably be channelled into strengthening US and NATO imperialism. since the vast majority of people on this site including me live in the imperial core, that's who i post for--but obviously there is no uniform communist position that can be taken by everyone everywhere, because political circumstances in different places are fundamentally different

all tucker wanted was some soundbites that would sell to western conservatives on twitter. all he got was putin spewing longwinded political revisionist crap that couldn't be cut up into twitter promos and could only be sold to russian nationalists, the very people who are already in his camp.
western people who aren't pro ukraine and can be swayed don't give a shit about the kyivan rus in the 10th century nor do they care about blaming everything on poland like claiming poland started WW2. particularly in the US with its large polish immigrant population. this should have been the easiest layup propaganda shoot possible and they even fucked that up.
putin would have known this but he can't see past his own ego to just sell the standard nato bad line. this is why russia will lose because they can't see past their own imperial ambitions no matter the cost.
