It's all about that hidden subtext...

I am always looking for hidden subtext when it comes to Jackie and Hyde, even during the later half of season 3, which I often think of as a ‘Zenmasters Drought’ of sorts. But, if like me, you subscribe to the belief that Hyde came away from the Veteran’s Day date with feelings for Jackie, then it makes considering his behavior in the episode “Kitty’s Birthday (That’s Today?!)” (3x17) really kind of fascinating.

Example 1:

Has Hyde noticed that Jackie and Kelso have been acting more civilly towards one another since Valentine’s Day when Kelso apologized to Jackie? Is Hyde perhaps trying to keep Kelso away from Jackie by inviting him to go ‘cruising for hot chicks’ with him? And is ‘cruising for hot chicks’ Hyde’s way of trying to get over Jackie?

Example 2:

Hyde is clearly not happy about this turn of events. On the surface, its because his friend is choosing to hang out with someone else, doing something he would consider to be infinitely more immature than the activity his friend had refused to do with him for the very same reason. But with subtext, I’d argue that Hyde is equally upset about the fact that Kelso will be spending time with Jackie, the girl he also secretly likes and doesn't want to see get hurt again by Kelso.

Example 3:

When Hyde shows up at The Hub after ‘cruising for chicks’, he immediately finds his way over to Jackie and Kelso. On the surface, he sees his friends, so of course he’s going to go see them. But with subtext, perhaps Hyde is also more than a little curious to see how well Jackie and Kelso are getting along (and to make sure he hasn't done anything to hurt her).

Example 4:

A punch line for a sitcom…or perhaps some hidden subtext that it really didn’t go all that well (he did show up at The Hub alone, after all) because Hyde is still harboring feelings for someone else?
