Israel Keyes

Israel Keyes was an American serial killer, rapist, arsonist, burglar and bank robber. He admitted to violent crimes from as early as 1996 and was apprehended and committed suicide in custody in 2012.

An Utah native and raised in a Morman family, Keyes was homeschooled with his nine siblings who lived in a 1-room cabin without electricity or running water. Keyes renounced the Christian faith as a teenager and later become fascinated by satanism. Keyes was described as quiet and introverted but a heavy drinker.

Keyes typically planned murders ahead of time and took measures to avoid detection; he did not have a victim profile and was careful to kill far away from his home and never in the same place twice. He kept his mobile phone turned off, paid for items in cash and often travelled an extremely long way to find victims, once flying to Chicago and then driving 1000 miles to Vermont. Keyes studied other serial killers and particularly admired Ted Bundy.

Keyes was confirmed to have killed 3 people but probably killed more, some of the victims he claimed to have killed's bodies were never found and Keyes was meticulous in avoiding detection. Keyes' last known victim was an 18-year-old coffee booth worker who he kidnapped from her workplace, sexually assaulted, robbed and murdered before leaving her body on a shed and going on a 2-week cruise holiday. When he returned home from his holiday he returned to the corpse, applied make up to the victim and sewed her eyes open, taking photographs. He used these photos to claim she was still alive and demanded ransom money before disposing of the body in a lake. It was this ransom money that eventually led to Keyes' capture.

While being held in jail, Keyes cut his wrists and bled to death. He left a note but offered no clues to other victims. In 2020 the FBI released a drawing of 11 skulls and a pentagram drawn in blood which was found under Keyes' jail cell bed. The FBI believes 11 is his total victim number.
