hey, so feel free to ignore this, but i saw your blog is crazily active and you answered smth similar in the past
for some reason, I cannot get behind TGCF I cannot find Xie Lian realistic regarding his mental health.
As someone dealing with PTSD constantly I feel like mxtx has completely washed out his character. No one reacts like that especially in the grueling circumstances he was put through in his teenage years.
I feel like ultimately MXTX is romanticising his trauma especially by bringing hua cheng into the equation too.
Hey anon.
So, this is a pretty intricate subject and I don't feel like I can do it justice in a few words, so this might get a bit long.
I've read the book a few months back by now, but going through my personal interpretation and experience with this character I feel like MXTX did a fantastic job, in terms of him being realistic and identifiable as a person, despite the world around him being clearly not realistic.
We do know how 17 years old Xie Lian, his Highness the Crown Prince was someone boldly arrogant and naive or spoiled, yet he whitheld a proud, overly-idealistic sense of justice in terms of saving the common people.
But his ideals were brutally tested countless times as XianLe fell and as he was degrading from a proud, ignorant, spoiled, naive prince to someone who would rob and steal and despair and who'd ponder ruining his kingdom as he has no other alternatives.
Xie Lian encompasses a very realistic portrayal of what falling into anxiety and depression does. His overly paranoid sense of abandonment, his clinginess to friends back then and having to watch them leave, his paranoia and very low sense of self. These are always peppered throughout the entirety of the flashbacks and the present timeline.
Morevoer, Book 4 covers this exceedingly well, with him going throguh the absolute lowest moments of his life. the attempted suicide, the fact that he thoroughly believes he deserves to suffer all those consequeces, the cursed shackle being his own request, proving that he's ready to never be able to die and suffer the consequences for literally eternity.
Yet our main character is 800 years old by now. He's had a long long loooong time to desist and rationalize why his existance never forebodes well and why he's the god of misfortune, why this fate befell him and how it's equally because of the one who manipulated him and his own choices back then.
Xie Lian now (800years later) has always been presented as being broken and somewhat a defeatist when it comes to his own fate, he despises himself, he has a constant need to deflect everything with his self-deprecating sense of humour but he is someone who is still compulsively obsessed with saving the common people.
This is not only incredibly realistic but also very human of him. He makes a mess wherever he goes for the exact reason of not knowing any better, he's always indirectly affected by his past self. His descent back then was incredibly steep fast and he had little to no time to get accustomed to the absurdly difficult and grueling choices he had to make.
So now it's not that he's blissful or ignorant or uncaring. On the contrary, his fierce dettachment to his past self and utter disregard of his own safety, his stubborn persistence of holding on to his core values, are not him ignoring/"getting over" his trauma, it's him working through it, constantly and repeatedly over and over for 800 years and counting.
To sum up, there are 2 things which are unchanged with his character and those are:
- his core value: save the common people - albeit present XL upholds a more twisted toned down pragmatic version of it
and
- Hua Cheng. Since you mentioned him I wanted to touch up on it a bit.
Him showing up in different forms throughout his life as the only tangible life-guard, he's the only one teaching him exceedingly slowly but surely that he can allow himself to be happy and loved and cared for.
His cognitive dissonance regarding everything involving Hua Cheng is a direct result of how little he thinks he deserves that someone so all powerful and all perfect and handsoome would spare him any thought.
He doesn't allow himself to give in because he still doesn't think he deserves it and it takes a long time for him to start believing it. Proof that despite all the clues being there his cognitive dissonance wouldn't allow him to believe Hua Cheng (or anyone, but especially HC) would hold any emotion for such a lowly broken god. It took riddiculously much (but realistically so !) up until the confession scene for him to slowly piece things together that he finally allowed himself to believe that.
The fact that by the end Hua Cheng is the one who breaks his shackles is both literally and metaphorically proof that he's finally freed of his past self.

Your opinion on hua cheng being deemed op and too perfect by a part of the fandom?
He is supposed to be OP and perfect and y'all know why, because this is exactly what he worked on for 800 years, to be the best version of himself in every single aspect, as to never let Dianxia down (again, in his eyes).
He's witnessed everything Xie Lian went through from the moment he fell down from the sky until his second banishment. He's helplessly watched as BWX had his way inflicting an insurmountable amount of pain, as the 33 officials mocked and bullied him, as his friends left him, and so on.. :( and every single time he's hasn't been able to prevent it, he was there at his side, suffering and tormented, yet either as a witness or as he one who brought hell upon everyone he wronged XL after the deed was done, but his beloved still suffered and - in his own eyes - he had failed.
So his main, no.1 purpose in life is to attain the status, power, influence and skill needed to prevent anything like that ever happening to his beloved. He even states how he cannot confess, nor confront the person he loves before feeling he attained that perfection.
As a plus, Xie Lian also reveres him as someone capable at everything, a more than perfect being and this is exactly as it should be. Ofc, XL doesn't demand, expect nor begs for his protection, as he is too kind-hearted and altruistic for that (also self-destructive but that's a story for another time), but he certainly relishes in the safety ad comfort Hua Cheng offers him as he is now.

I feel like it's a wasted opportunity that we never saw them interact.
I don't know how it would work timeline wise, but I would've loved to see them practice demonic cultivation (and kiss) behind the Jins back.
Guangyao would naturally be the only one who knows but he can be trusted. Especially since Mo Xuanyu was forced to leave Jinlintai, he would benefit from having someone like Xue Yang on his side.
Their personalities complement each other well, while their affinity for demonic cultivation and revenge makes them get each other really quickly.
I want Xue Yang to do his make up is there art of that, please give me art of that xD

Yeah that specific line from the screenshot hurt me as well, it wasn't really necessary to phrase it like that.
Beacuse JC already knows this, he already had a monologue saying how WWX has always been better than him in literally everything, he's brutally aware of this fact. So twisting the knife like that was a bit uncalled for.
But again, I cannot blame Wen Ning at all either, so I'm just....in the middle. I love wen ning a lot and I fully understand why he did what he did. It was crucial for JC to finally learn the truth, but also he doesn't know how to do it better because he's also right to be angry in his own way as much as JC is. So everything around that scene was just pure angst from all sides xD

xie lian + my hc : every day xielian practices saying huacheng's private communication password, but not enough so that he actually contacts him. Just to pluck up the courage.
However, he accidentally contacts him one time after saying it 3x and he turns red unable to speak while Huahua is just confused on the other side but rejoicing that gege finally did it, so he rewards him extra much that night.

You already know how much I fucking love it.
Why? angst and bittersweet tragedy?
But moreso:
Xue Yang who cannot make sense of, or process his emotions, falls so easily and blisfully with Xiao Xingchen,from their very first meeting at that. He was the only one who showed him the kindness and comfort he didn't know he craved so much.
Xiao Xingchen slowly becoming the only home Xue Yang ever knew. xD
Shows how fucked up his priorities are due to his utterly sad and tragic background. How he could do nothing but give into falling in love with this person who was initially his enemy and even more than that someone that is his complete opposite.
It works so well even though it seemingly wouldn't, because this goes far beyond opposites attract.
They're both dissasters though, so disasters attract?
Althogh I'm sure if you ask him it would be his cognitive dissonace talking and he'd probably insist he's just using him(at least at first). Because he doesn't know better, not consciously at least, that he's fallen deeper than he would ever think it's possible, not that he can imagine, given that he's never had that.
But once you observe them it becomes highly apparent, when he can't help but smile around him, protect him and poke harmless fun at him and how fiercely he clings to keep having what they have.

"your opinion on _____Kataang" . I genuinely wanna know why altho ik hate itYou can even choose not to answer this..
Okay...I've seen this one coming as I've thrown in hints (and anti posts) without fully explaining myself, so here goes.
I understand the things I might say may not be new, it's just my own POV as well.
Why I don't ship Kataang:
1. The crush:
Atla has thrown in crumbs of Aang developing a crush on Katara from early on, too early on. They set it up in a way that Katara is indifferent towards him, as anyone would be, there are bigger things at stake than romancing a child she just met.
Even so, you might think hah that's cute, except the forced crush narrative went at great lengths so that we don't forget who Aang's crush is and for whom he would foil the actually neatly setup main plot narrative (yk the one that should be more important)
It's almost as if there's no way to 'show not tell' this narrative, it's like there's no romantic spark or connection that would speak for itself in this relationship. Spoiler: there isn't.
Bryke needed to constantly remind us that "Aang likes katara (likes her 'like that..') don't forget guys, otherwise the ending we planned will make no sense." Spoiler: It doesn't!
2. Katara being Aang's guardian:
At the exact same time the big crush happens, we see Katara repeatedly being portrayed as Aang's motherly figure. If you think "wait I thought that was cute too" then I need to ask "In which way exactly?"
The sad truth is, women being written as their male partner's motherly figure has been happening ever since cishet male writers picked up a pen for the first time. Some people view this as typical normal behaviour.
I think it's unfair.
Unfair to whom? Mainly & more importantly, to Katara.
They deliberately set it up so that Aang is her rebellious child (but then also lover? helpno) that needs discipline and her 100% unbridled attention as to not stray from the right path or to lift him up when he's down.
Of course that alone is fine, Katara doesn't complain, she's the strongest of the group, she's been doing the same with Sokka since they were little, the responsibilities she carried, she did so proudly without question, for her brother.
So, is Aang her child when he loses focus and track of the real objective, when he's moody and afraid, when he can't tell right from wrong...and THEN her lover when he 'saves the world'?
Because 1. that's a bit F-ed and hypocritical and 2. that sounds like Katara would be his prize for having defeated the villain and carrying him all the way.
3. Lack of mutual trust and understanding:
Sure, they've known each other since episode one, sure they've been next to each other all the way, as we're all constantly being reminded...so how come after all that Aang cannot truly understand Katara's feelings and is so quick to judge and offer subjective advice when she's in real need of moral support, comfort and understanding.
I'm not saying he took her for granted when he himself had troubles but he took her for granted when h-
Aang dismissing and brushing off Katara's feelings and forcing his own views and beliefs, isn't proof of him caring for her. It's proof of him (most likely unknowingly, due to inexperience) belittling and suppressing her grief, until she forgets and forgives.
Which isn't what she needs, which is unhealthy.
I'm not blaming him per say, because he couldn't do better. He didn't understand her enough to do better in that situation. He never saw that side of Katara, because she wouldn't let him see it. She dealt with everything herself and took on with dealing with his problems and the responsibility he carried instead. (like a mother should). And that's fine, when the narrative is intended to show you this is who they are (see point 2) ), but it's not fine when the narrative has plans for them to have a 'love story(?)'
4. Inappropriate kissing + storming off like a child who has just shown his parent he's mad + cut to married ending?....... - need I say more here?
Anyway this got too long and I also tried to keep each point short. I admit, I wanted to do this for a while. So thank you for the ask, nonetheless.
