so for some reason i decided i wanted to compile a list of nautical male names that i think would be options for the odesta baby. i think whats fun about the hunger games is that the names in universe are so on the nose that you could name anyone anything but with annie's name being... annie i don't think she flat out name her son something like ocean. it ended up being about 30 names long so i decided to list my favorites here and the rest under read more.
Calder - rough water, Chardon - sandbar, Delmar - of the sea, Liriel - bright sea, Murifinn - dwells near the beautiful sea, Rayan - land that is lush in water
Bien - ocean, sea; Bradan - salmon; Brendan - Irish patron saint of sailors; Carrick - rock; Caspian - Caspian Sea;  Cordell - cord maker;  Dour - from the water  Dylan - toward the tide  Enki - Sumerian god of water;  Firth - arm of the sea;  Havelock - sea competition;  Hurly - sea tide;  Jonah - dove;  Kano - god of the water; Keelson - a girder that forms the “backbone” of a wooden ship; Kelvin - narrow water;  Ler - the sea;  Maricielo - sea and sky;  Marines - of the sea;  Merwyn - sea friend;  Muirchertach - mariner; Neifion - neptune; Nereus - greek god of the sea; Rafferty - flood tide; Ronan - little seal; Seward - sea defender

since you folks seem to have lost your sense of fecking whimsy, have a folklore rant from the mouth (or hands, rather) of a disabled Irish woman who grew up hearing the history along with the tales and had changling stories in my own family. and no, my post will NOT be riddled with source links because my source is the oral history from the people who told the stories
for heaven's sake the changling myth is not ablist or anti-autism it was mostly about fricking crib death
and most irish people are/were cool with the fae. if you're desperate to bring autism in the mix, mostly you'll get "aye, they got a wee bit o' fae blood in them. just work around their quirks, and you'll get along swell". but mostly the changling myth was either a) crib death - "the Fae Folk trusted you with their child's last moments, and yours isn't dead, it's running around happy as can be with the faeries", which helped mothers with ptsd and depression after the sudden and inexplicable passing of their child because they didn't have the medical technology to know what crib death was and most old irish mothers blamed themselves (I used to know what crib death was caused by, but I forgot - I'm pretty sure it was an inevitable genetic thing)
or b) chronic illness (such as connective tissue disorders, g.i. disorders, and yes neurodivergence) that would be hard to recognize in a baby - "the Fair Folk trusted you with this fragile, sickly child and in return for your loving care will provide your own child with wonders none of us humans can imagine".
most families with changling children loved and treated the "faerie" like their own blood (which they were, but still), and we're a very hospitality-driven culture. you treat everyone like your own family, it's a close-knit community - even more so back then. were there people who tried to "return" the faerie child, leaving a baby alone in the woods? yeah, a few, but not the majority. and pregnancy has been known to do some pretty nasty things to some minds, this would be more a mental health problem of the mother than an ablist "that's not my kid" thing. also ablists do exist in every culture, there is that point as well.
my main point is - legends draw from life, and life is full of biases. are goblins/gnomes (forgot which one) anti-jew? maybe. are changling children ablist? only sometimes, and those are the outliers (my own mother was considered a changling by her grandparents - that didn't make them love her any less). are vikings depicted as wearing helmets with horns because of Irish people? yes because THEY WERE INVADING AND R*PING AND PILLAGING OUR TINY LITTLE ISLAND WITH NO PROVOCATION. what better way to get children and unknowing adults to run and hide and save themselves than creating a monster instead of Some Guy?
if you try to make a story with zero biases that won't offend anybody, it will be as bland and beige as your fricking houses. if something in your life is scary or bothersome or different than you, that will translate into your oral narrative. that's just how oral histories work. also, any blatant or malicious biases in the original story/cryptid will have trickled down through a millennia-old game of telephone and would be practically unrecognizable unless you were looking for it. stop looking for things that are "problematic" or "anti-___" and you'll realise that people need whimsy in their life
and finally - you don't have to believe in everything, but don't mess with it just in case.

This is just a map of New England (minus Connecticut the fake New England state)
#text post#new england#source: boston 25 news website: believe it or not massachusetts is not the most irish state new study finds#18.9% of mass residents have irish ancestry#really this is not surprising at all. massachusetts is the most population-dense state by far with the most immigrants#and new hampshire? ask anyone where their family lived before they came to new hampshire. it was massachusetts#new hampshire is full of ethnically irish and italian and polish catholics whose families have been here long enough#to assimilate and move to the suburbs and become xenophobic and anti-immigrant.#literally bothers me so much when ppl named molly o'flannigan and patrick sullivan talk shit about dorchester lawrence etc#and other immigrant-dense areas in new england. i'm like baby your grandparents lived there#well or at least that's my experience#new england still does have a shocking amount of wasps whose families have been here since the fuckin mayflower#i dont have a direct link to that in my own family but it's very strange how that is taught to new england children as like#'our' heritage in schools. plymouth plantation and the puritans and all that. you're weirdly made to identify w it#and like as time goes on#just factually that only represents the population of ppl who live and are raised here less and less.#not to mention it does nothing to address DIVERSITY in the area. but i suppose there's like a local mythos#we have to teach a story to children and it has to be a 'we' story and that story has to be pilgrims#bc the story has to start at colonization and not expand after that. thats too complex. happy thanksgiving?#new england white people have a habit of thinking theyre irish catholic anglo-protestant settlers and they built this country#they dont parse out their own identity at all and they certainly don't want to have to consider other ppl's.#wow i didnt mean this to turn into a culture-critical rant im sure most of my followers arent even from here so idk what this means 2 u guy#happy saint patrick's day!

ive mentioned this a few times, but my main fl character, morgan, is both a proud communist and a catholic, and i wanted to find some of the arguments in favor of christian comminism (look im not as well read on theory as my oc is. youve seen my posts. you KNOW i never learned how to read) but i had the damndest time finding any!!! found a lot of pearl-clutching christians saying that communists hate religion and theyre soooo scary so no you cant be a communist and also like jesus. jesus would hate socialism. no, ive never heard of the sermon on the mount, what the fuck do you mean "the meek will inherit the earth"
but i expected that much. i was more disappointed to see a bunch of smug communists saying that religion is a creation of capitalism used to oppress and distract people, and you cant believe in fairy tales if you want to be a real leftist. at best religion is the last refuge for the desperate and oppressed, a way to make the proles feel like they're doing something while actually continuing to serve capital. yes this is also how Adorno talked about Jazz but we will still keep jazz after the revolution because it's good and people find meaning in it, but we wont have religion because i hate my dad i mean christians i mean organized religion at large
but i KNEW there were christian leftist out there because i have MET THEM and also that was tolstoys WHOLE THING so i know its out there!!! you can't trick me!!!!
thankfully i eventually found some stuff, including a new podcast hosted by two guys with phds talking about christianity and leftist politics (one of them is a journalist and the other is a theologian, and they have a lot of criticism of The Church as an institution while also saying that religion and religious people can have some value in the fight against capital)
anyway. that's probably been the most frustrating research rabbit hole ive gone down for this fic!! so far anyway

Other things I’ve learned about Nida Khurshid from the internet are that she is of Pakistani, Indian, and Irish heritage, and she used to do ballet as a kid. Subject to any contradictions from spnwin I will be incorporating these things into my personal homebrew backstory for Latika

Wait but Irish rebel songs actually slap!
Like I feel like they slap hard enough that at least some British soldiers were like, “yeah we suck and this beat kicks ass” and started supporting the IRA.
Is that why they’re so catchy? So John Crumpet would sing them during drills and get in trouble with his commander for singing enemy anthems??

Warrant Officer Irish Guards Tunic
Tumblr media
The Warrant Officer Irish Guards Tunic is a distinguished garment that embodies the heritage, discipline, and regal tradition of one of the most esteemed regiments in the British Army. Crafted with precision and adorned with symbols of honor, it stands as a proud symbol of service and loyalty.
Constructed from the finest materials, the tunic boasts a deep shade of scarlet, a color synonymous with the Irish Guards and evocative of their storied history. Its immaculate tailoring and precise stitching reflect the regiment's commitment to excellence and attention to detail.
Adorning the tunic are the iconic buttons bearing the insignia of the Irish Guards - a stylized shamrock encircled by a garter strap with the regiment's motto "Quis Separabit" (Who shall separate us). Each button is a mark of distinction, signifying the wearer's allegiance to one of the most prestigious units in the British Army.
Emblazoned on the sleeves are the regimental rank badges, denoting the wearer's status as a Warrant Officer, a position of leadership and authority within the Irish Guards. These badges, meticulously embroidered with gold thread, command respect and admiration, symbolizing the wearer's dedication and service to Queen and country.
Completing the ensemble are the various accoutrements, including the ceremonial belt and sword, which further enhance the tunic's grandeur and ceremonial significance. Whether worn on parade or during formal occasions, the Warrant Officer Irish Guards Tunic exudes an aura of dignity and pride, serving as a timeless tribute to the gallantry and valor of those who have served before.
In every stitch and detail, the Warrant Officer Irish Guards Tunic embodies the storied legacy and unwavering commitment of the Irish Guards, a testament to their enduring tradition of service and sacrifice.

I was to talk briefly about Chronic Bad Take Havers and this sort of logic. Deliberately anonymous screenshots, found in the trans guy tags, posted by known jerks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only am I very tired of the logic that gender is somehow synonymous with race (and frequently said by white people ofc) but also like.
"White history month" doesn't exist because the ethnicities regarded as white have their own individual history months already that are specific and unique to them. "Anti-white racism" doesn't exist because the ethnicities regarded as white that do experience specific and unique oppression have words to describe their own experiences. Trans mascs don't currently have an agreed-upon term for discussing their issues that is specific and unique to them.
"White history month" isn't a thing. That is correct. But Irish heritage month is March, as is Greek. Italian heritage month is October, as is Polish. There *are* months specifically dedicated to those specific experiences.
"Anti-white racism" isn't a thing. However anti-Irish and anti-Italian (also called italophobia) are. Anti-Greek sentiments are so strong that just over a hundred years ago we were still having race riots targeting Greeks IN CANADA. Slavophobia is also a known and discussed term for the continued hatred of slavs to this day.
There *are* words to describe the specific and unique oppression faced by these peoples even if they may have some privilege in other ways.
Trans mascs also experience oppression in specific and unique ways. The comparison falls apart when you know that these groups do indeed have words to describe their experiences.
So why is it that us having ours is so uniquely terrible? Why can we not have space to talk about ourselves?
