Repost from amazing Gemma Rose ~ I saw a friend yesterday who actually made me realise just what I’ve achieved in the last 7 months and it wasn’t until I took some photos when I left her and looked back on December 2021 pictures that I realised!!! 😱 that girl on the left in all these picture just isn’t me, in fact I lost the real me 6 or 7 years ago 😞 that’s a long time to be unhappy! I saw lots of people last night that haven’t seen me for 6 months or so and they too couldn’t believe their eyes 👀 the compliments and shock was probably what I needed because until then as silly as it sounds you don’t realise just what you’ve done .. even if it is shedding a massive 6 and 1/2 STONE !!! 🎉 😅 So thank you to everyone yesterday who made an effort to come from across the other side of the room, even when you don’t know me, to say “wow you look amazing” 💝 I’m not a boastful person, I don’t fish for compliments ever, in fact I get embarrassed but you’ve made me extremely happy today! ✨ TOP TIP: Always support, never hate! So important to build each other up! Weight loss is a huge huge deal because that person must have gone through a lot to get to the point where they dislike their size, even more to try to change it and even more to achieve it! 💪🏼 Don’t be that 1 friend that can’t bring her/himself to compliment, don’t become the green eyed monster and definitely don’t judge! (we all know one! 🙄) Just support because I’m a true believer in life “YOU GET WHAT YOU PUT IN” Or if you can’t find the right support, 1 person who can and will say WELL DONE! IN THE SAME BOAT is about two teenagers from rival families who are last resort partners paddling the Texas River Odyssey, a non-stop 265-mile canoe race. The Odyssey was inspired by the Texas Water Safari, a real ultramarathon canoe race. 

I wanted readers to feel like they were in the boat with my main character, Sadie, so I paddled the river, interviewed racers, and watched YouTube videos about the Safari. 

But what I really wanted was actual racing experience. Just not 265-miles of it. Enter the Texas Junior Water Safari, a race that covers the first sixteen miles of the Safari course. 

My friend Chris was game to race with me, so on a rainy morning, we loaded up the canoe and drove to the San Marcos River. Already soaked from the rain, we waited at the starting line, paddles raised, for the gun to go off. When we heard the bang, we dug into the water and pulled. It was chaos. Boats were everywhere. A solo canoe flipped in front of us. Two other boats sandwiched us and I couldn’t take a stroke because there was nowhere to put my paddle. 

We broke free of the crush and were cruising until we hit a submerged log and had to get out and climb over. During one of our dam portages, a guy in another boat lost his shoe in the mud and had to continue with one bare foot. We aced Cottonseed Rapid (whew!) where I once saw a team kicking a laundry basket sized dent out of their aluminum canoe. Later, where the river was wide and open, I paddled us directly onto a submerged rock and we jolted to a stop. While sticking close to the shore, we heard a crack and a giant waterlogged branch fell from high in a tree and crashed into the water. Realizing it could have landed on us, we stuck to the middle of the river after that.

As we closed in on the finish line, we had a sprint-to-the-end battle with another boat. We didn’t catch them, but we came in 24th place, after two hours and fifty-nine minutes, and I was exhilarated.

Racing gave me a better understanding of Sadie and what it feels like to be ultra-competitive, and now some of my favorite moments from the Junior Water Safari show up in IN THE SAME BOAT. 

But even better, it was so much fun that I can’t wait to do it again.
