Elegy for the Publishing Industry
Recent wave of editorial layoffs reminds us that the book world we loved is gone
Tumblr media
by Rebecca Kurson
A decade ago, Penguin and Random House merged in a blockbuster deal. In December 2022, the courts blocked that megamouth behemoth from swallowing up Simon & Schuster. A federal judge finally noticed that publishing houses had become essentially a turducken, which creates a stranglehold for authors, agents, competition, and readers. The continued contraction of publishing houses ensures fewer real editors. There are even fewer of the glorious old guard this week, as a recent round of layoffs at Penguin Random House specifically targeted employees older than 60. Reports indicate that buyouts are coming as well at HarperCollins and Hachette. The blood-letting in publishing continues.
The editors who are leaving represent decades of experience, thousands of pages of margin notes, and millions of books sold. Remember when you fell in love with Joan Didion’s Slouching Toward Bethlehem? How about all the gelato you sampled while devouring Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love? Hope you have a good memory, because the editors responsible for signing and shaping those books are gone.
Worse than losing the institutional memory in publishing is what it means for writers and ultimately readers. Before publishing was corporate, publishing houses allowed editors to take chances on authors who might not be bestsellers. When Cormac McCarthy died in June, Dan Sinykin eulogized both him and the glory days of boutique publishing. Joyce Carol Oates tweeted that McCarthy’s career would be impossible today: “true that most writers of McCarthy’s generation, & younger, were supported by editors & publishers through early careers of modest sales, careers-in-the-making that probably could not be replicated today.” Yeah, her editor just took the retirement package too.

On March 5th, 1959, 69 African American boys, ages 13 to 17, were padlocked in their dormitory for the night at the Negro Boys Industrial School in Wrightsville. Around 4 a.m., a fire mysteriously ignited, forcing the boys to fight and claw their way out of the burning building. The old, run-down, & low-funded facility, just 15 minutes south of Little Rock, housed 69 teens from ages 13-17. Most were either homeless or incarcerated for petty crimes such as doing pranks. 48 boys managed to escape the fire. The doors were locked from the outside and fire mysteriously ignited on a cold, wet morning, following earlier thunderstorms in the same area of rural Pulaski County. The horrific event brought attention to the deplorable conditions in which the boys lived. The boys all slept in a space barely big enough for them to move around & theyre one foot apart from one another & their bathroom was a bucket at the corner where they had to defecate in. In an ironic twist, the land in which the school stood is now the Arkansas Department of Correction Facility Wrightsville Unit. In 2019 a plaque was finally placed after 60 years.
PURE EVIL!!! MY GOD!!

Hey, all. It’s your friendly neighborhood synth biology expert,* here to remind you of the horrifying reality that Gen 3 synths can canonically glitch out.

*this user is not a biology expert, synth or otherwise
Update: The primary drive message is confirmed in dialogue to be about early-Gen synths. Which means that A#-## designations do apply to them, meaning J2-84 could have also been a robo-synth.

once again i am thinking about the fact that jakob only uses rene's name on the eve of his return, and narzissenkreuz only goes by rene because that's how mary-ann recognises him, and narzissenkreuz never once mentions jakob by name... how at the start of the quests it's mary-ann whose absence is most keenly felt, but by the end it is alain who seems to have shaped the world the most, and yet we never get to see (excluding neuvillette's cutscene, of course.) is it guillotin's world in that alain was the one whose ideals best shaped it, or guillotin's world in that everything comes back to mary-ann at the end?

hey. hey uh. just wondering what happened to all the children Curtain barged and brainswept. I'm assuming he didn't have a child services worker politely waiting at the dock for them. uh. where did they go.
#the mysterious benedict society#tmbs#ld curtain#sometimes in the Big Things that Curtain's done stuff like this gets overlooked#did the kids get dropped off at the orphanage? would he really waste the time? raise suspicion about where all these kids are coming from?#assuming one student gets barged a week from the leaderboard every Thursday. in all the years the Institute's been running.#that's a lot of kids.#did the kids just get left on the docks. left to wander around Stonetown with no memories and nowhere to go#also. the fact that unlike the books. not all/most of the kids at LIVE were orphans#Martina had parents#now granted the Whisperer's messages 'the missing aren't missing' probably discouraged them from looking for their kid#but like. did the parents ever wonder. after months of not hearing from their kid.#did they go into town one day for some shopping only for their child to stumble out of an alleyway#dirty and alone and scared and with a completely blank expression#and doesn't even blink twice at their own parents? not even a spark of recognition?#thinking about when the Emergency lifted and the Whisperer's messages stopped.#how many parents suddenly remembered their children have been missing#how many parents rushed to the Institute only to find out their child disappeared years ago?#'what happened to them?'not sure. only they never say goodbye to any of their friends before they leave#like they don't even recognize them at all.#how many parents kept searching. kept following that thread. found their child in an orphanage with no memory of how they'd gotten there#anyways. food for thought!

One thing I do genuinely find comforting is that assuming we don’t do some silly things with nukes when the last humans are alive and civilization as we know it has entirely collapsed and the world moved on, I think people will still be doing fun and sexy things with their genders.
