In defiance of the orderly classification of race and religion, Indo-Trinidadians participate in and contribute actively to what is commonly labeled as the “African” Orisha tradition. Houk (1995, 135) describes these Indo-Trini participants as mainly interested bystanders, though he estimates their presence as being up to 10 percent of the Orisha tradition, including notable shrine leaders and drummers. The influence from Indo-Trinidadian culture moves beyond the individual level of participation in community to theological influences from Hinduism. Aiyejina and Gibbons remark, “So strong is the inter-penetration of Africa and India in Trinidad that, in the context of the Orisha tradition, Osayin is perceived by some Orisha practitioners as having an Indian dimension and Hindu deities are represented in many Orisha chapelles or in separate Hindu chapelles within the same yard” (1999, 198).9 In addition to there being Indo-Trinidadian adherents to Ifá/Orisha and the theological influence of Hinduism, there also exist cultural and political sites of support between sectors of the respective communities.

i come from the most neurodiverse, peculiar family that was always doing things the “weird” way in the context of every metric, and i think that gave me so much character, beyond the communication of words
we were the weird branch of my father’s yoruba family unit, we didn’t make sense to our cousins ever, his brothers always saw him as the loveable odd one. we were weird in contrast to all the british families i would interact with at school; we were weird in the church, my mother never exposed us to indo trinidadian culture in the most conventional terms.
i’ve always been a marmite-esque person, people love me or despise me; that just means that when they fw me, they ride hard for me & i think it’s because of how i was raised
my dad’s autistic adoration for Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones and the Motown structure in business literally designed the foundation of my approach to singing and songwriting & i doubt it would have ever been the same if i didn’t get to channel anything through that.
i was weird too, i’ve always had an (unbearably) strong moral centre that caused me to be radical in any thought i genuinely held. from primary school. i made a few core friends but would socially isolate myself from the rest because i didn’t understand their style of “play”. that pattern has continued throughout my life, even to adulthood. i found out that perfect pitch is something someone’s born with, before i learnt to attach sounds to the notes on the western classical scale, i would remember every key of every song i heard. we would rehearse for musicals and the teachers would begin the song as they knew how. if it wasn’t the original key, suddenly the song didn’t feel the same, i would always put my hand up and let the teacher know it was the wrong key, i didn’t realise that wasn’t an experience i wasn’t sharing with anyone. weirdness is a cool thing, but sometimes i see people who consider themselves typical in the sense of their cerebral landscape, but also socially, emotionally, in all the other assets, and i covet what they are able to access - everything that isn’t this. there are most definitely gaps as some things remain starved to feed other aspects of my person, lol. confessional.
i felt like i was living a black wednesday addams experience, a little ?
just having an experience of the numinous :S
