Quote
In defiance of the orderly classification of race and religion, Indo-Trinidadians participate in and contribute actively to what is commonly labeled as the “African” Orisha tradition. Houk (1995, 135) describes these Indo-Trini participants as mainly interested bystanders, though he estimates their presence as being up to 10 percent of the Orisha tradition, including notable shrine leaders and drummers. The influence from Indo-Trinidadian culture moves beyond the individual level of participation in community to theological influences from Hinduism. Aiyejina and Gibbons remark, “So strong is the inter-penetration of Africa and India in Trinidad that, in the context of the Orisha tradition, Osayin is perceived by some Orisha practitioners as having an Indian dimension and Hindu deities are represented in many Orisha chapelles or in separate Hindu chapelles within the same yard” (1999, 198).9 In addition to there being Indo-Trinidadian adherents to Ifá/Orisha and the theological influence of Hinduism, there also exist cultural and political sites of support between sectors of the respective communities.

Carnival
Carnival (Carnaval) is an event where the Caribbean celebrate their culture. In the Caribbean they have different type of carnivals depending on the islands whereas, in Notting Hill carnival and Leeds Carnival they have all the islands country parades all together 1 by 1 and they will have people representing each parades such as if your from Trinidad or want to represent Trinidad you will be with the Trinidad parades. We have Carnival to celebrate being out of slavery. In the UK carnival is 56 years old.
Every island in the Caribbean does carnival but the main islands I'm going to talk about is:
Trinidad
Trinidad carnival is called either bacchanal, J'ouvert, Mas or just carnival. A lot of carnivals have similar names and you’re going to see that throughout the blog. In Trinidad carnival they have 2 days of celebrating which is Monday 24th February and Tuesday 25th February. Trinidad carnival is the mother of all carnivals. J’ouvert is Carnival in the morning whereas other carnivals are for the evening, so for example J’ouvert starts at 2AM and finishes at 1PM and Bacchanal, Mas and Carnival starts at 6PM and finishes at 1AM so to be honest there is going to be no sleep. The type of songs they play at Trini Carnival is Chutney which is Indo-Caribbean, Soca which is Afro-Caribbean, Calypso and Steel pans. The costume they wear is mostly red, white, blue, green and pink. They mostly wear bright colours and all Carnival have feathers except from the Creole Carnivals and Garifuna tribe Carnivals.
St Vincent And The Grenadines
In St Vincent they call Carnival Vincy mas, J’ouvert or just Carnival. Vincy Mas has been promoted as the hottest carnival in the Caribbean. Vincy Mas is a celebration of music, dance and Vincentian heritage and the colours they use at Vincy Mas are colourful vibrant colours. Before Vincy Mas was celebrated on the days before the start of lent. The colours they use at Vincy Mas are any bright colours because they aren’t really picky when it comes to colours. The songs they play at Vincy Mas are Soca, Calypso and Steel pans and having all of this attracts tourists.
