[ID: Screenshot of an Instagram post by @/SeekWithSer. The location reads, “Haut-Karabagh.” The title reads, “WHAT'S HAPPENING TO THE ETHNIC ARMENIANS IN NAGORNO-KARABAKH IS A RESULT OF THE WEST'S APATHY TOWARD S.W.A.N.A REGIONS.” The users Substack article is mentioned at the bottom, titled “Uncomfortable Truth: Breaking the wall of silence, indifference, and apathy.”
Slide 2 reads: I'LL NEVER FORGET WHAT SOMEONE (A WHITE PERSON) SAID WHEN I MENTIONED THE 2020 WAR IN NAGORNO-KARABAKH.
"ISN'T THERE ALWAYS CHAOS IN THOSE AREAS? IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN, THOSE PLACES ARE ALWAYS INFESTED WITH WAR AND DESTRUCTION."
This statement stuck with me because it represented the general apathy, indifference, and willful ignorance of the West toward countries we can't point to on the map whose names we can't pronounce.
And yet. AND YET. What we fail to realize (or conveniently ignore) is that our tax dollars are one of the most significant contributors to political and economic instability and PEACE in "those places."
Slide 3 reads: WHILE THE U.S. GOVERNMENT BANKROLLS GENOCIDES AGAINST WEST ASIAN MINORITIES, ETHNIC COMMUNITIES CONTINUE TO BE GASLIT AND TOLD TO BE GRATEFUL FOR U.S. INTERVENTION.
For example, Armenians are expected to be grateful to the U.S. recognition of the Armenian Genocide despite continuing to aid Azerbaijan in their genocidal efforts and ethnic cleansing of our ancestral lands.
For example, Afghans are expected to credit American soldiers for fighting terrorism in Afghanistan despite the U.S. playing a key role in the Taliban's rise.
IT IS ALL RELATED.
The more we see them as separate issues, the more divided we will become and the more power we hand over to imperialist agendas to continue pillaging ancestral lands and destabilizing SWANA communities.
Slide 4 reads: I'M NOT EXPECTING EVERYONE TO CARE ABOUT GLOBAL HUMAN RIGHTS. THAT IS YOUR PREROGATIVE.
BUT I WILL SPEAK ON BEHALF OF ALL SWANA COMMUNITIES THAT ARE HURT BY THEIR SO-CALLED ALLIES WHO WERE OUTRAGED OVER THE WAR IN UKRAINE BUT WHO CONTINUE TO TURN AWAY IN APATHY TOWARD THE PLIGHT OF THEIR COMMUNITIES.
Do they not deserve the same ounce of respect?
Have we collectively decided that their lives don't matter? Are they not worthy of the same rage and empathy that we've showed to our Eurocentric counterparts?
I IMPLORE us all to look at our hypocrisy. WE ARE COMPLICIT ABOUT THE SAME VIOLATIONS OF HUMAN RIGHTS THAT WE STAND AGAINST.
Slide 5 reads: ALLIES OF INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES NEED TO BREAK THEIR WALL OF SILENCE, INDIFFERENCE, AND APATHY.
WE NEED COLLECTIVE ACTION AGAINST THE DIRE CONSEQUENCES OF COLONIZATION AND INSTITUTIONALIZED TERRORISM NOW.
INDIGENOUS ARMENIANS OF ARTSAKH ARE BEING ETHNICALLY CLEANSED FROM THEIR ANCESTRAL LANDS AS YOU READ THIS AND THERE IS NOT ENOUGH ATTENTION AND AWARENESS OF THIS HUMANITARIAN CATASTROPHE.
IF THE VALUES OF INTERDEPENDENCE, SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, AND ACCOUNTABILITY MEAN SOMETHING TO YOU, IGNORING THIS WOULD BE OUT OF INTEGRITY.
Slide 6 is a painting of an Armenian woman with tape across her mouth that reads “terrorist.” At the top, it reads: “seekwithser.substack.com.”

every day I think about how Palestinians are surviving an Israeli-induced famine during a western-backed genocide and yet they still are sharing what little they have with the surviving cats and dogs and other domesticated animals left in Gaza I can only imagine how Palestine would flourish once the occupation is finally lifted. The care Palestinians have shown one another has been humbling.
I am forever thinking about an exchange during Al-Aqsa Flood in which one resistance fighter told another to take care of captives as the IOF was attempting to massacre them--captives, included-- because "[the occupation's] humanity is not ours." Even in the face of imminent death, which could have been more readily escaped by sacrificing captives, fighters chose a better and more thorough understanding of humanity because their intent was to force the colonial regime to end its occupation, to halt the genocide, not to simply kill or terrorize. The occupation has made atrocities routine, crimes against humanity a celebrated event, enshrining them in popular culture but Palestinians have taken enormous pain--and human losses-- to ensure that the humanity of Palestinian resistance is remembered and centered. May every resistance effort look to Palestinian solidarity for inspiration. May every radical be moved to show more militant kindness and a steadfast resolve in the face of cruelty to remember one's humanity, even the humanity of one's oppressors. Their humanity is not our humanity. From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free None of us is free til all of us are free Jin, jiyan, azadi

some arabs and some muslims from the swana region continue being shocked at their governments for not doing anything and worse having a hand in the genocides that are being committed right now in both palestine and sudan or the massacres in yemen show how much they have never cared about the indigenous issues or the ethnic groups and religious minorities around them and what these governments commit every single day on and off their soil and how long they have ignored the zionist occupation and how they normalized it through the years and how some of them even supply it with oil, gas and fruits and vegetables even. and how these governments have for decades and still to this moment pick and choose what genocide they want to acknowledge.
It's hard to keep seeing people that are flabbergasted by this or genuinely thinking that turkey, egypt, iran, saudi arabia, jordan, uae, syria governments...etc are for justice and for freedom or they're not capable of doing much for Palestine right now and they're doing their best. or thinking a dictator like saddam hussein that has committed uncountable massacres actually would stop this if he was alive right now I keep seeing videos of the ba'athist iraq flag raised and people praising him in some protests ignoring the fact that he's genocidal himself or because those people he killed aren't human enough and deserved it so it doesn't make him genocidal in their eyes. or saying we coexisted under the ottoman empire and it was so much better than now which completely erases my people's genocide and so much more.
half of these conversations is lesser evil bs and palestinian struggle and liberation being used for this and for spreading disgusting ideologies about another group of people is absolutely evil.

one thing I will say. I fucking WISH there was more medieval studies stuff done on indigenous history of the americas/pacific etc. I know that work is happening outside of medieval studies but I think it's a huge shame and a disciplinary problem that it isn't happening within medieval studies to a more significant extent

ngl maybe I'm cracked but when I hear about a tragedy where 100~ Assyrians died because of infrastructural neglect I do not think "we should be talking about how the bride is 18 and the groom is 27" even though I think that's gross

I don't think people say it enough but white passing/white presenting poc struggles are still valid.
Even though there is a privilege to being white presenting, it comes with a unique set of dangers and problems that should be discussed to fully deconstruct racism rooted within society.

Oh my god, once again reminding people that Jews in the SWANA region being scared of being murdered if Israel is dismantled are not comparable to white Americans and Canadians being scared of indigenous sovereignty. The entire world, and that includes Muslim countries, has a very very long history of violently expelling and brutally murdering its Jewish communities; Israel itself has many, many refugees and descendents of refugees from other countries in Asia and Africa, countries that do not want those people back.
The comparison to white North Americans is absurd, cruel, and ahistorical; the claim that Jewish people lived in happiness and peace and safety in SWANA countries before Israel's founding is a complete fabrication and blatant victim blaming. Many of the countries surrounding Israel and throughout the SWANA region have Jewish populations that can literally be counted on one hand and that isn't because people just abandoned their homes and friends and communities to move to Israel for funsies, it's because many of them were brutally murdered or expelled from their homes, with the rest fleeing out of fear for when they would be next.
I am saying this as a Native person who is 100% in favor of indigenous sovereignty in my home country and who is fully against the treatment of Palestinians by the Israeli government. If you cannot acknowledge how antisemitism is still very much alive and an active danger to Jewish people all across the world and how many people fled to Israel specifically to escape violence, then you really cannot have any sort of meaningful conversation about Israel.

fuck it. i do hold people of colour with influence (celebrities/politicians/etc) to a different standard when it comes to supporting Palestine because if they don't, they should fucking know better. taika waititi is literally Indigenous, he should fucking know better than fall for settler-colonial propaganda. Arian Moayed is Iranian and has spoken out about the discrimination SWANA people face, he should fucking know better than to support a colonising force built on the blood of Palestinians. jordan peele makes horror films about the disenfranchisement of subjugated people, he should fucking know better than to support an apartheid state. kamala harris is from a Black South Asian family and grew up in the fucking 80s, she should know better than to support a government policy that enables genocide. Mila Kunis isn't a person of colour, but has spoken for years about her Ukrainian family fleeing Russian persecution, she should fucking know better than to support a colonial settler state that displaces 100s of 1000s. there's no fucking excuse for abandoning people who share the same struggles you face and supporting their oppressors unless you never had any fucking conviction or values but seeking power or fame all along. shame on them and every single person of colour and immigrant who stands with Israel and bolsters genocide with their social capital. i wouldn't spit in your direction if you were on fire

If you can't see the difference between a diaspora Jew who has seen the violence inflicted on their community throughout history and the world for their entire existence since childhood and genuinely believes they will never be safe until they have somewhere to go that is made up of mostly Jews (and thinks that place might as well be 'where they came from'), and a Christian who wants all the Jews and Muslims back where they belong so that Jesus will come back or just so that 'their country' won't have Jews or Muslims anymore, and you believe those two people deserve the same scorn and violence, and that their Zionism is virtually indistinguishable, you're not a good person. I'm sorry you're just not.
My relatives aren't evil for thinking Israel should exist, they're just scared because they know what an angry, hateful world has done and can/will do to scattered Jews. They want to believe that there is a place in the world that is safe for Jews to live. (Whether Israel actually is that is beside the point- it isn't but that's beside the point).
And I'm a Bundist (not explaining it look it up idc) but with how things have been lately (and always really) I can't say I don't see the appeal.
Obviously Israel's government in general and the Likud party in particular is steeped in genocidal intent and abhorrent racism. Obviously the discrimination, colonization and brutalization of Palestinians should end. Obviously Israel should no longer be what it is- a militaristic puppet state by which the US keeps its hands in the middle east/swana region.
But don't you dare say that the Hobby Lobby CEO and my sister have the exact same Zionism or reasons for it.
I only say any of this bc you reblogged a post essentially saying all Zionism is the same and deserves the same treatment and seeing as diaspora Jews are neither the biggest material nor political backing force behind Israel, and also our fears are completely founded, I can't let you express that belief without at least making an effort to correct it.
(Also my sister technically just believes that Jews should be able to safely visit or live in the Levant, which we're indigenous to- and if you don't believe that where tf do you think we came from bc we didn't just grow out of the ground in NYC one day holding bagels I'll tell you that but I digress- but doesn't like the Israeli gov or its actions. So that may not even be Zionism according to you but that's what she calls it.)
Ok. Right now journalists are live blogging the massacre of my people and no one is lifting a finger and in fact sending them bigger and badder weapons. You're very heartless. I don't care if you don't think I'm a good person but I'm sad that you're not one either.

Entire communities are disabled by oppressive systems even if select individuals within said communities are perceived by some as “able” or “neurotypical”. Palestinians are disabled by settler colonialism, as are indigenous people everywhere. My communities have been systematically disabled by centuries of colonialism and the ugliest forms of racial capitalism.  Entire communities are labeled “insane”. For example, mainstream media orchestrates the dehumanization of Palestinians, Arab/ SWANA, Muslim communities (and other racialized communities) to frame us as savages where everything from our moral compass, motivations, ability to critically think, desires, hopes, traditions etc are brought into question to garner public support for our massacres & genocides.  What are the Brown & Black “savages” if not “mad & insane”? What are the "barbaric “human animals” if not “crazy & psychotic”?
Another banger by Ayesha Khan! And this one is free to read!

its half semantics half important but if you’re going to talk about antisemitism (especially as a gentile) the least you can do is spell it right and not look like a jackass. antisemitism is spelled antisemitism, it is not spelled anti-Semitism nor anti-semitism, and certainly not antisemetism.
this is only important to discourage the notion that there is an imagined community of “semites” who orient around that identity, which is not true. the separation of “anti” and “semite” encourages the dialogue shift of jew hatred onto literally everyone else (ie. goyishe arabs, other indigenous swana groups, black people). we need a term to describe our own experiences, do not strip this from us.
antisemitism is not a term that jews created, it was deliberately popularized to make the term “jew-hatred” (Judenhass) more academic sounding and add a racialism to the term which previously denoted being against the religious practices of jews. you’re welcome to read about it more here.
antisemitism is spelled antisemitism, antisemitism is about jews.
