I know you dont believe in Snily but let's say Snape managed to hide his racism from Lily. Would he be able to get her to date him? In your post you mentioned you believe James calmed down after both the werewolf incident and the fallout of Snape and Lily which allowed him to get in her good graces. In this AU he'd probably still be too big of a douche and Snape's chances as her "best" and only friend are much higher. Would Lily go for it? And when would their relationship crumble?

This is a "you should write the fic" ask, as I think that will make you happier, but I can give it my best go.

What if Snape Managed to Hide His Opinions?

That's the trouble, they'd come out sooner or later. He might not drop the word in front of her in humiliated rage as he did in canon. However, he was in Slytherin, he was hanging around with people who did not hide their opinions, and his relationship with Lily seemed to be becoming increasingly tenuous because of it.

Sooner or later, something was going to happen, or she was going to face the music and realize that Snape not rejecting his friends was not simply him trying to stay alive in Slytherin and not be shoved into lockers.

Snape believes these things himself despite being half blood.

It's just a matter of when.

Would They Date?

Doesn't seem likely.

They were friends up until fifth year when the lake incident occurred. There was plenty of opportunity for them to have dated then and it didn't happen.

Could be neither wanted to ruin the friendship, could be Severus was terrified of what would happen to him/Lily if he openly dated a muggleborn, could be that Lily was similarly leery of dating a Slytherin and someone who spends time with Lucius Malfoy.

Regardless, that they didn't end up dating, even for a little bit, points to me that it just wasn't likely to happen. Even had they continued as they were, I don't see that changing until maybe after Hogwarts.

(Though if Snape still becomes a Death Eater then that's a whole other can of worms he'd have to keep on the sly from his girlfriend that he probably wouldn't want to get into).

When Would Their Relationship Crumble?

Immediately after Hogwarts.

Snape probably still becomes a Death Eater, he has little reason not to, and his views are unlikely to have changed just because he hasn't been confronted over them.

This means he's going to be very secretive, moody, keeping odd hours and disappearing in the dead of night, and weird after Hogwarts.

With terrorism happening all over the place, Lily probably getting death threats just because she exists, and Snape no longer having the excuse of "I don't want to be shoved in lockers" it'd become painfully clear what's going on and just what Snape might be doing.

I imagine Lily gets out fast.
