Jack Wolfe as Gabe Goodman
So I've had a few "Tell me everything!" responses to my recent post about the Donmar Warehouse's stunning new production of Next to Normal. Knowing the audience here, I'll narrow my focus to writing about what I know my fellow 'Six of Crows' fans will most want to hear - Jack's role as Gabe. I won't be recapping the show itself, as I assume most folks reading this will have listened to the soundtrack, read the script, or watched a Broadway bootleg. Or at least I hope so, because below you will find MAJOR SPOILERS for Next to Normal and specifically the Donmar's staging of it.
Tumblr media
Gabe is introduced to us as the Goodman's teenage son, who seemingly has a close affectionate relationship with his mother, Diana, but frosty relationships with his father Dan and sister Natalie, neither of whom acknowledge his presence. About thirty minutes in we are shown exactly why. Diana brings out an 18th birthday cake when the family have Nat's boyfriend Henry over for dinner and it is revealed that today would have been Gabe's birthday...if he'd been alive. But Gabe died when he was a baby and Diana has only been imagining him growing up all these years.
Up until this point, Jack has been playing Gabe as a cheeky rebellious teenager, but when he slinks back on stage to blow out the candles on his cake, he becomes a much more ethereal and impish presence. In I Am The One, his expression transforms from sweet and devoted when singing to his mom, to menacing and malevolent when singing to his dad. Gabe manifests as different personas for each member of his family and it's thrilling to watch as Jack shifts between them all. When Natalie comes downstairs to sing Superboy and the Invisible Girl we see Gabe as the cocky conceited older sibling, who seems to revel in being their mother's favorite.
Tumblr media
In her next therapy session, Diana is asked to speak about her son and this is when we get Gabe's showstopping I'm Alive solo. This number really did raise the roof. I'll admit when I saw videos of Jack singing it at Tom Kitt's concert, I was worried he wasn't giving the song the necessary attack. But on stage he goes absolutely full-throttle with it. He starts at the top of the stairs with a mic stand, looking like the frontman of a rock band, then he brings the mic down, roaming all over the floor. At one point in the song, Natalie and Dan have an argument and Gabe comes to stand between them, looking amused as he passes the mic between them. However Gabe starts to lose some of his swagger as Diana's doctor suggests that - as 18 is the age that children typically leave home - maybe Diana should think about her son this way and finally let him go.
In the next scene, Diana is in the kitchen, clearing out Gabe's things. She holds up a baby-grow and then starts playing a music box she used to use to help Gabe to sleep. Gabe comes down the stairs with a rucksack and duffle bag, like he's a kid being kicked out of the house by his parents. Diana can't seem to go through with it as she pulls him into a dance and they end up hugging with Gabe's head tucked under his mother's chin, like a needy child. This leads into There's a World, a hauntingly beautiful song with a very sinister undertone as we learn this is Gabe leading Diana towards a suicide attempt. This song and Catch Me I'm Falling are an excellent display of Jack's high range (he'd make a wonderful Orpheus in Hadestown - the UK production is coming next year, so...please??)
Tumblr media
Following the suicide attempt, Diana is given shock therapy and consequently loses her memories of the last eighteen years. In the early part of Act 2 and for the song Aftershocks, Gabe is up in one of the upstairs rooms, like he's been locked in a cell - not gone, but no longer able to get to Diana. When Diana finds and plays Gabe's music box, there's this very chilling sight of Gabe's silhouette, his hands pressing to the screen, as he sings along to the melody. The lighting here is eerily reminiscent of a sonogram. When Diana regains her memory of her lost son, Gabe breaks free of the room, comes down the stairs to sing his I'm Alive (Reprise) from on top of the kitchen counter. After his wife's relapse, Dan crumbles to the floor, his back pressed to the kitchen counter. Gabe disappears behind the other side of the counter, and (I'm told, I couldn't see from my angle) he sits in the same position as Dan. They both stay like this for about 15mins while scenes with Diana, Nat and Henry take place.
As Diana leaves, Dan finally rises from the floor and begins singing his I am the One (Reprise). In other videos of this song that I have seen, Gabe is played quite aggressively, stalking around Dan, goading his father into acknowledging him. Jack does this scene very differently and effectively. He stays behind the counter, his eyes downcast, his manner meek as if quietly pleading for his father's attention. When Dan yells out "Why didn't you go with her?!" Gabe leaps up onto the counter and throws his arms around Dan, desperately clinging to him. When they get to the chorus, Dan turns round to face Gabe, gripping his arms. Then at the end, Dan staggers back and tearfully says his son's name for the first time. When Gabe responds with his "Hi Dad", Jack's face his full of shocked awe. He plays it like a child realizing the father he thought hated him, loved him all along. It's a devastating moment that had everyone in tears.
After the song, Dan reaches out a hand towards Gabe, but he stops as Natalie comes downstairs. Dan tells Nat her mother has left and Nat asks him - "So it's just me and you for now?" and there's a hesitation where Dan glances at Gabe, who is still sitting on the counter. When Dan finally answers yes, it's just the two of them, Gabe's expression is accepting, not resentful like earlier in the show. As he leaves to go upstairs, Gabe gently touches Nat's hand, almost like an apology. Natalie gives the slightest reaction, as if she is sensing something. It's a beautiful resolve to Gabe's role, and when he appears for the last time for his verse in Light, he no longer feels like a malevolent spirit, but more like this serene angel watching over his family as they all try to heal and go on with lives.
This is honestly a star-making performance from Jack as a young musical theatre actor. And as much as I want Jack and the other Crows actors to be off filming their spinoff show once the strikes are resolved, I also feel strongly that Jack belongs on the stage. Between his acting, his presence and his vocals, he's sure to be a performer in demand in the West End. Here's hoping there's award nominations to come. He's deserving of them.

oh, to be a little witch of the woods 🦋✨️ with a garden of nightshade and moonflower and henbane 🌿🌺 a cluttered hut with tomes and oddly-shapen vials of glittering potions and ghastly elixirs ⚗️🕯 nestled secretly in the midst of the forest, between an ancient god-tree and a snaking river 🌙🔮
until !! a little wild boy tries to steal from your fish trap !! and has the nerve to threaten you !!
"i'm not a boy!" he warbles, all impish and stubborn. in his hands is a cherry-stained bow, small and fit for him, carved with runes that read foreign. "i'm a dragon!"
"oh, yes, of course," you muse, suppressing a wicked grin at the untamed of sight of his blonde hair as he huffs it out of his baby-face. "how could i overlook your long and scaly tail or your forked tongue?" when you hiss, his nose scrunches up, surrendering a giggle. "tell me, little drake, what exactly are you going to be killing me for?"
the confidence in his big, brown eyes falters and they dart away, down to the overgrown herb garden near your feet. silence trickles by as his shoulders rise, shy suddenly.
"is this your home? or your fish?" you're answered by the drop of his hands, bowstring going lax as he frowns at the grass; a scolded little beast. "ah ha, i didn't think so." dirt clings to his round, pink cheeks, and you lean close enough to swipe it away, turning his chin up. "though it would seem i have no choice but to offer something else in exchange for the safety of my trout."
you're bestowed a toothy smile.
Tumblr media
without fear, the little drake stomps into your home, beastly with his manners as he begins to peer into jars and poke at your literature. dust makes him sneeze when he wanders too close to your bookshelf, and he wipes his nose on the front of his tunic.
"come, come, hatchling," you wave a still-warm loaf of bread around like a jewel, beckoning him away from the prick of your thorned roses. "i hope you'll find sweet apple jam a suitable replacement."
his blonde eyebrows shoot up, sitting on his knees at your small round table. precariously, he leans over flickering candles and fares too close to a bubbling cauldron, attention stuck to the green jar you pull from the cupboard; a clumsy little boy, in all manner of the term.
near drooling as you slather down two thick slices of oat bread, digging into them without so much as a thanks as you give him — and his forthcoming mess — all the space he should need. out of reach, you make quick work of stowing away spells that eyes as young as his should never see.
"does your mother know where you are, little drake?"
he gives a small shrug and wipes the back of one hand across his messy face, jelly sticking between his little fingers. "she's gone."
your attention is his instantly, watching from across the hut as a chill runs down your spine; so nonchalant, for such a revelation. "and where has she gone?"
"i don't know," big brown eyes drift to the crows that chatter in your window, watching them as his grip tightens on his delight. "father says she and my sister were taken by bad men."
despite his initial approach, you realize then just how kind he looks: chubby cheeks and a round face, slow-blinking lids and a wild mess of silky, ashen hair. small, for how intelligent he seems, and too trusting.
this would not be the first time you've known such heart-wrenching news, but still — yours breaks for him.
the war still rages to the north, though it hasn't touched this realm in years; regardless, greed among men poisons all, an illness that festers and spreads as spores on a summer wind. there's a very good chance a boy as young as he never even knew his missing family, and, quietly, you thank your gods for such a mercy.
you clear your throat of its itch. "and where is your father, then?"
the little drake pauses, biting at his lip as he thinks — before taking another massive chomp. "at home."
one parent, at least, that hopefully has been strong enough for the both of them, though you doubt the little boy's presence in your home is doing well on a poor father's nerves. a treasure is what you've found in the heart of these woods, one you must return.
"come then," you sink a hand into his tousled hair, which earns you a frightful little glare. "you've been away long enough."
whatever directionless path brought him to your neck of the woods is as clear as day, little feet obvious in their trample of weeds and broken branches. the little drake leads, unafraid and talking loud of all the goblins he's killed in your forest, how good he is with his bow and the tiny knife he keeps strapped to his quiver.
you don't mention the barrier you've set up, to keep the evil in its place, and instead listen to the wild flames of his imagination. it's amusing, at least, and reveals him in slow, secret ways; it's clear the measure of strength he's set is in the shape of his father, and that he thinks being able to defend oneself is the highest skill one can have. they're important things, good things, and you tell him so — but you can smell the fear bleeding through.
it paints a small picture of the man rearing him, one that must be desperate not to lose what little he has left. you think of your own grief and your stomach churns, eager to return him to safety.
"shall we take a shortcut?" at the edge of the river, you pause, calling on thick roots to curl up from under their trees and span across the the rushing water. they creak as they grow, unending, bringing about new sprouts of life as they bend to your will.
"woah!" the wild boy shouts, jumping up and down in place before darting forward. you hardly catch him by the back of his tunic, holding him in place as the bridge evens out. "how did you do that?"
"should you live to see your sixteenth year, i will show you!" you snap, frowning down at his impatience. his cheeks pink, offering small apologies as he vows to stick by your side.
still leading, though he's true to his word and dares not to run ahead any further. the only time his impatience sparks anew is when a cottage breaks your line of sight, surrounded, too, by a swath of thick trees. glee marks his face and you return it in full force, allowing him to take you by the arm as he starts to shout out for his father.
—but at the feel of eyes on the back of your neck, you freeze, hands going up in surrender as a sharp tang of fear sours in your mouth; it's been a long time since anyone has gotten the jump on you. "daddy drake, i presume?"
"huh?" the little boy turns to make a silly face at you, mouth wide open like you've just spoken a foreign language — but the looming beast steals all his attention. something digs too deep into the skin of your neck, and the boy erupts. "father!" he cries, eyes going impossiblely wider. "stop!"
at your throat, the blade hesitates but never recedes. the low voice tickles the shell of your ear, and you repress a shiver. "you've got until he closes his eyes to get the fuck outta here, or i'll skin you myself."
you hum, hiding a burst of adrenaline at the threat, and it earns you a impatient tch. "well, that's not very kind, is it, for the woman that's found your hatchling?"
before you have a chance to even consider a countermeasure, you're shoved roughly against the base of a tree, a hand fisted in the front of your robes. the man before you is — big, and you have to look up to see the expanse of his furious, unshaven face. in him somewhere, you see his son; hair bleached and untamed, a shared sharp nose, even their brows turn down to the same degree.
it would make you laugh, if a singular red eye was not tearing through your very being. if you did not know at once who stands before you.
"dragon, indeed."
"i'll fucking kill—"
"father!" the boy tries again, hurrying to beat his little fists into his father's thigh. "stop! stop!"
it takes the man back a step, though he still keeps you in close range. with an all-encompassing hand, he grabs both of the boys' and tugs him until he's hidden behind the wall of his back.
"stop! she's my friend!"
"she's a witch, boy!" the beast snarls, temper flared like wings. "and you've brought her straight here!"
"she helped me!" he shouts, digging little heels into the ground to steady himself as he tries to yank free. "and fed me! and—"
"fed you?" all at once, his hand drops and in a single swift movement, he's on his knees in front of the boy, gripping his cheeks as if to stop him from swallowing something long gone. "what did she feed you? the hell did you take from her?"
you scoff, offended, though the father continues searching his son's throat. "i do not delight in poisoning children, your grace."
both of their eyes snap to you, wide and full, and the little one murmurs "father?" quietly as the man rises to his feet. when he tries again, he's silenced with a low, guttural grunt. the curved blade in his hand gleams crimson in the light of the setting evening, reflecting nearly the same shade as the thick, crude jewels in his earlobes and peeking out from the collar of his tunic. with nearly the same intensity as his eye.
rumors have taken flight, of an exiled king that lost a war his arrogance began: bonded dragon slain in battle, an eye taken, long braid cut. family torn. the scar eating up the right sight of his body and face speak to his loss; an unending reminder of what pride made of him.
"go inside, hasaru."
bakugou katsuki: fire housed in human form.
the little boy — bakugou hasaru — is quick to take advantage of his father's surprise, darting to stand in front of you, like a small, wooden shield. you can't help but to smile at his bravery, his flickering defiance. "only if you promise not to hurt her."
"boy—"
"no, promise!"
"little drake," you let out a chime of laughter and crouch to his height, cupping his cheeks when he turns to you. "all the valor you have shown today gives me great courage, and i think—" you glance up at his father, smiling wistfully at his flared nostrils. "—i might be able to handle myself. it's not my wish to trouble you any further." the little frown you receive has your own lips turning down, and you pinch at his chin once, serious. "but should you ever encounter danger in these woods, do not hesitate to find me, hasaru."
"enough." the once-king grits, lips pulling back over his teeth. "get. inside."
you watch the little boy scurry off, shoulders slumped as he eyes his father distrustfully. as he reaches the top step, he looks back once over his shoulder, cheeks round and full with the pout he wears, and fat tears well in his eyes as he waves a final goodbye.
as soon as the door closes, you're digging your nails into the tree bark, passing back and fully through it to avoid katsuki's deadly swing. it catches in the wood, but he makes no move to free it, stepping out so that his singular gaze can burn into your cheeks.
"if y'know what's good for you, you won't come back here."
"i only mean to warn you, daddy drake," you sing, far out of reach and smiling at how bright his glare becomes. "that the next person to find your hatchling in the woods might not be so kind."
his left hand raises and you feel the sorcery before you see it, though it airs differently; heavy and yet smooth, like the calm lap of waves against a shore. innate is his fire, not something he's had to study, like you.
embers pop at his fingertips, smoke swirling. "that a threat?"
"not at all," you try to mimic him, thinking hard on the handful of kinetic spells stored in the tome of your mind. "just—he's a chatty little thing, you know? might want to watch out for that."
"i don't need advice from you, witch," he spits, "now leave us."
your attempts at softening his steel are fruitless and so you drop the smile, stepping as close to him as he'll allow before rearing his defenses. "i should hope they never find you or your boy, your grace—"
"don't ever—
"—but if they do," you continue, "know that i am not far."
he weighs your words, their honesty, searching your face as he considers; whatever kindness he finds is deemed untrustworthy, though you can't say you blame him. "why the hell would i believe you? because you want to help?" he snorts, turning his face so that the scar of his pride is on full display. "i'd have burned these fucking woods to the ground, had i the chance."
"oh, i don't doubt that," you murmur, retreating a step when he huffs. "but i lost the ones i love, too, once, and i would have ripped the world to pieces just the same, if it meant they would be returned to me."
the steel warms, giving away the true shape of his grief for only a moment before hardening again; the once-king says nothing, only grunts before turning with his own retreat.
"not far," you repeat, light, when he pauses on the steps of his house. "over the river and near the god-tree. the little drake will know the way."
his arrogant eye meets you over his shoulder, now weary, clouded, and he nods. wordless is an understanding such as this.
as soon as he reaches for the door, it swings open and hasaru is sticking out his little head before his father can finish gritting out his name. a toothy smile reaches you, and then katsuki as he turns to him, relieved that you are not kindling for their hearth. at the sight, the once-king warms again, offering a small tug of his lips before pressing a firm hand on his son's head and steering him back inside.
katsuki looks out one last time, as you let the wind take the petals of you away.
Tumblr media
generally i find it so difficult to imagine katsuki with a beard, but quirkred's art is just. woof.

DIG-ROCK Impish Crow Vol. 1 Part 3: Foreshadowing
Tumblr media
Track 03 前兆 Foreshadowing (9:53)
Listen along here: https://open.spotify.com/track/3EkrlNMbBLkdo6XtqnWMV1?si=103f7d33bbb747ca
Toki: Hmm, Mitsuru and Hibari aren’t here. Ah, just got a message from them. Looks like they’ll make it on time.
Toki: “Getting hamburgers in front of the train station,” and send.
Tsugumi: Ahh, I’m hungry~
Toki: You’re already going to eat that much? You have the bentos, don’t you?
Tsugumi: I’ve decided that’s going in a different stomach.
Toki: You’re going to get fat.
Tsugumi: Unfortunately for you, I don’t get fat no matter how much I eat~ See?
Toki: Idiot! Pull that thing down!
Tsugumi: And with that, it’s time to dig in!
Tsugumi: What about Mitsuru and Hibari?
Toki: Eat or talk, pick one or the other. I got a message from Hibari, the two of them are heading here now. Mitsuru’s work ran a bit late.
Tsugumi: Hmmm… Mmm…
Toki: Hm? What’s up?
Tsugumi: Studio musicians always end up playing with different people each time, right?
Toki: That’s true.
Tsugumi: I wonder if it’s fun.
Toki: Well, Mitsuru seems to be having fun, right? Or he would’ve quit a long time ago.
Tsugumi: I see, that’s true… It’s music after all, just making sounds would be fun. Besides…
Reporter (on TV): Next week, RUBIA Leopard will be releasing a new album! How far will RUBIA Leopard take us along? Look forward to it! (TL: couldn’t pick this up from the background but the reporter’s talking about rubileo here :”))
Toki: RUBIA Leopard…
Tsugumi: Hm? Did you say something?
Toki: Ah no, it’s nothing.
Reporter (on TV): (???) You won’t be able to look away! That’s all for now, see you next week! (TL: couldn’t get this either wahhh T T)
Tsugumi: Hey Toki, give me a sip of your oolong tea.
Tsugumi: Toki?
Toki: A-ah, sure.
Tsugumi: What’s up?
Toki: Mm… Tsugu, you still don’t want to make a pro debut?
Tsugumi: Not at all. What, you want to go pro?
Toki: Not me, but you-
Mitsuru: Ah, there they are.
Tsugumi: Mitsuru, Hibari, over here!
Mitsuru: Sorry we’re late.
Toki: Don’t sweat it, you’re right on time for when we planned to meet.
Mitsuru: It’s just like Hibari said.
Hibari: It’s Toki we’re talking about, I figured he wouldn’t say anything about us coming at the last minute.
Toki: You’re not very reliable…
Hibari: I know that~
Mitsuru: Hey, if we’re okay on time is it okay if I grab a bite?
Toki: That’s fine, but Tsugu got bentos from work for us too.
Mitsuru: I’ll eat that, but I also want french fries. I’m also buying a vanilla shake for Hibari.
Hibari: Haha, thank you.
Toki: We can’t rest for too long, got it?
Mitsuru: Got it.
Tsugumi: Ah Mitsuru, could you get chicken nuggets too?
Toki: You’re still going to eat more?
Tsugumi: It’s fine, isn’t it?
Toki: Hey, you-! You said you’d only take a sip!
Tsugumi: Ah, I’ve been caught. But it’s just a little oolong tea~
Toki: If you wanted to drink it then buy it for yourself in the first place.
Tsugumi: Fine, fine, I got it~ Can’t be helped, I’ll buy you another one so cheer up! ‘Kay?
Toki: Tch, why does it sound like I’m the one being selfish…
Hibari: Hey, Toki-kun.
Toki: Huh?
Hibari: What were you talking about with Tsugu-chan? When Mitsuru and I first got here, you had a troubled expression.
Toki: Ah, you must’ve imagined it.
Hibari: Hmm…
Toki: What is it?
Hibari: Hmm, it’s nothing~ It was my imagination, right?
Toki: Hrgh…
Hibari: Someone’s getting a call. This is Tsugu-chan’s, isn’t it?
Toki: That guy forgot his phone again… I always tell him to keep it on him because of stuff like this.
Hibari: Ah, it’s from Tobi-chan! He won’t end the call, huh… Maybe it’s something urgent?
Toki: Mm… Well, whatever. Hello, Tobikura-san? It’s Mizukawa. Tsugu just stepped away, so you can talk to me if you’d like. Ah, that… In that case, I have something to ask. Is that alright? Ah, but we’re about to start practice. Ah yes, I’ll talk to you again tonight. Thank you.
Hibari: You really are overprotective when it comes to Tsugu-chan aren’t you, Toki-kun?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hibari: Yup, right on time.
Hibari: Toki-kun, wake up.
Toki: Mm… Morning, Hibari.
Hibari: Morning. I have a class first thing in the morning today, so I’m heading out. I’ll leave the key here. Leave it by the post as always.
Toki: Got it. Ah, did you eat?
Hibari: I’ll eat out. The snacks we got from the convenience store on our way back from practice yesterday, they’re in the kitchen, alright?
Toki: Thanks. Sorry for intruding like this every time.
Hibari: Don’t worry about it. It’s easier for all four of us to gather in a wide place like this, right?
Toki: There’s no way you did, but is that why you got such a spacious room…
Hibari: Hmm, correct~ It was just Mitsuru and me in our first year, but I knew that by the next year you and Tsugu-chan would be stopping by. Four guys settling down in a student’s one-room apartment would be way too cramped and narrow, I just couldn’t do that.
Toki: Did you tell your parents that?
Hibari: Of course not. I just said this is a good place. The rent for this place being 8,000 or 10,000 yen is just a calculation error, just an error~
Toki: An error that’s almost twice the amount…
Hibari: Toki-kun, you’re so serious~ Since they’re my parents, it’s okay to rely on them while I can, right?
Hibari: You also want to head off by 2, right? You’ll be late if you keep laying around like that. See you later.
Toki: Even with everything he says, that guy always goes to school right on time, huh.
Tsugumi: Mm… The smell of food.
Toki: You’re finally up! Your food is ready.
Tsugumi: Eh, for real? A ready meal as soon as you wake up is the best~ I’m going to live here from now on.
Toki: Just saying, this is Hibari’s place and I’m a guest.
Tsugumi: Let’s live here as the four of us~ Huh, where’s Hibari?
Toki: He went to school a while ago. Besides that, Tsugu, go wake up Mitsuru.
Tsugumi: Don’t make such a hard request, you should do it!
Toki: He didn’t wake up when I tried so I’m leaving it up to you.
Tsugumi: There’s no way, he definitely won’t get up. Mitsuru won’t get mad if the food gets cold anyway, let’s give it up.
Toki: It can’t be helped, I’ll try again later.
Tsugumi: Ahh, I’m starving… What’d I even eat yesterday? A hamburger, bento, and…
Toki: Your stomach really burns through food, huh.
Tsugumi: Even if you ask me, it’s a mystery to me too. Thank you for the meal!
Tsugumi: Ah, instant miso soup.
Toki: If you’re going to complain you don’t have to eat it.
Tsugumi: I’m not complaining. I meant that miso soup right when you wake up instantly gives you energy~
Toki: Is that right?
Tsugumi: Besides that, the thing we were thinking about yesterday, let’s try to make it work before the next live.
Toki: The live’s next week, right? If we rehearse after thinking about it more, we’ll barely make it. If you’re really serious about making it happen…
Tsugumi: I am serious. Toki: Easier said than done.
Tsugumi: Eh? Toki, are you giving up?
Toki: Don’t talk like that.
Tsugumi: If you love me, shouldn’t you give it your all ‘til you drop dead? Toki: Such bad tastes…
Toki: Thanks for the meal.
Tsugumi: Time for school?
Toki: I’m a student after all. Ah that’s right, you work until the evening, right? Come with me to go out with Tobikura-san tonight. He went out of his way to invite us after all.
Tsugumi: Ah that’s right, I got a message from him yesterday, I totally forgot. But what does he want to show us?
Toki: Who knows?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIG-ROCK -signal- Vol 2 Release Commemorative Short Story (side. HIBARI) TRANSLATION
Hibari entered alone, passing through the automatic door of his condominium. Hearing the voice of a woman saying "Welcome back" from the concierge counter, he momentarily felt a flutter in his chest.
(Excessive self-consciousness)
Suddenly feeling embarrassed, he hastily nodded and hurriedly entered the elevator hall.
At the hamburger shop where they received the news, when the four of them stood there in a daze, a call came from Tobikura.
("I'm really glad…!")
As they heard the voice repeating "glad" multiple times, its tone tinged with moisture, their nose tingled slightly.
(Yeah, that's right, it's good. Really good.)
Just like me. The first thing I felt was relief. (This time has been quite challenging…)
Overcoming a series of tense moments, completing the PV safely, with a good reputation, and having the single release decided. Tobikura, of course, and I think Samejima and Shigino were happy too. However,
(I guess I was still flustered…)
I hadn't thought about what comes next at all.
Whether it will sell or not. Rankings and such. Normally, I would forget about all these things that I usually care about so much, while keeping a calm exterior.
"Maybe you're concerned? You still can't say that the band is your main job."
Shigino asked me the other day, and I brushed it off.
Because I can't proudly declare it as my main job until I can earn enough. I don't want to be laughed at for being forever like this, for being pathetic, for feeling embarrassed, or for having dreams that seem worthless. But by who?
No one is laughing. None of the people around me.
The one who laughs at me the most isn't society, my father, or some unknown bystander; it's always myself. (Like a fool)
I want to create music with everyone in Impish Crow, I want to be in the band. With that single-mindedness, I threw everything else away. My parents, school. And the boring future that had been promised to me.
Yet, the part of me that's conscious of appearances still can't be abandoned.
Every time I notice my uncool self, I become disheartened. But,
("It's good.")
Right now, that's truly all there is.
We all put in our efforts.
We did everything we could.
People I respect wholeheartedly cooperated.
With Toki by my side. Tsugumi being safe. Reconciliation with Mitsuru.
Impish Crow remaining Impish Crow.
(Ah, seriously. I'm so straightforward, like an idiot)
Other matters are unimportant.
(It's really good.)
Even if it's self-satisfaction or self-indulgence, it's okay.
Right now, that's enough.
Don't rush. It's alright, believe me, I have a gut feeling,
Suddenly, I remembered what Akane told me earlier.
(Maybe he believed in me too).
Even more than I did back then.
(Truly kind-hearted, so much)
Scrolling through my smartphone's address book, I was about to tap his name… but I stopped.
(You were right, saying things like that. I don't want to say it even if I die.) So, I selected a completely different name.
As the elevator doors opened, I quickly slipped into the entrance and took a deep breath.
(…Alright)
From now on, surely, while experiencing joy, relief, and moments of disappointment. With both my uncool self and my proud self,
I'll continue walking together with all of them.
So, before that,
"Hello, Mom. It's me."

Gordon gets a call from Marineville.
Set in the Mariana Trench-verse.
Continuity: TOS
------
Gordon had been enjoying the peace and quiet, floating along the pool’s surface, savouring the moment. And then all hell had broken loose…
“Alan Shepard Tracy, you get back here right now!”
The youngest Tracy brother’s impish grin was audible as he taunted his unfortunate target. “You’ll have to catch me first, Virg!”
A third voice joined the fray, calmly attempting to quell the flames of the brewing argument. “Alright fellas, that’s enough.”
Virgil growled lowly. “Easy for you to say, Scott. It’s not your Thunderbird that has ‘Thunderbird 3 rules, Thunderbird 2 drools’ written all over it!” The silence was deafening. “In bright pink paint!” Okay, even Gordon had to admit that was going a little too far.
“He did what?!” …And big brother’s calm was gone. Gordon didn’t need to look up to picture the look on Scott’s face. He’d been on the receiving end of what they all liked to call The Stare more than anyone else. And he certainly didn’t envy Alan right now.
The aquanaut whistled, drawing everyone’s attention to him. “You want my opinion?” He took their silence as a yes. “Make him clean it up, then ground him for a month.” He moved off of his back, and swam towards his brothers, stretching as he did so.
“I’m not a little kid anymore!” Alan protested.
Virgil huffed, still a little annoyed with the prank, but at least Gordon could hear the amusement in his voice. “Gordon probably means grounding as in no missions, not staying in your room.”
Alan grumbled. “Same thing to us, isn’t it?”
“Should’ve thought of that before doing it then.” Scott folded his arms. “You’ll definitely be cleaning that up, immediately.” Alan sighed, accepting his fate. “I’m not going to ground you, since I have to stay to manage the island while Dad’s away and someone has to fly Thunderbird 1. Wait a few hours though and you’ll have a fresh job lined up.”
Their little brother slumped over, trudging over to the scene of the crime. “I better get to it, then…”
“Yeah, you better.” Virgil’s voice followed him. “You never know when we’ll be needed on call!”
“Speaking of Dad,” Gordon hauled himself out of the pool, and grabbed the towel he’d set aside earlier to dry himself off, “what’s the latest from Tracy HQ?” Their father had been called into an urgent meeting with Tracy Industries’ Board of Directors earlier that week, and from what they’d heard from him so far, it was a real doozy.
Scott sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Nothing good, I can tell you that…”
Virgil whistled lowly. “That bad, huh?”
“Yep.”
“How long do you reckon he’ll be?” Gordon asked.
“I’m not really sure.” Their eldest brother shrugged. “The end of the week at the very least…”
Gordon ran a hand through his wet hair. “Well, I hope he gets back soon.” He started, throwing a cheeky smile in Virgil’s direction. “Too much stress is bad for you. Ages you by about a century.” Virgil smirked, catching on. “Ooo,” Gordon made a show of it, pointing at a random spot on Scott’s head, “is that a new grey hair?”
Virgil rubbed his chin. “You know, I think it might be, Gordon.” He hummed. “Either that or it’s an old one and big brother’s hair dye isn’t working anymore.”
“Haha. Very funny.” Scott deadpanned. “I’ll have you know that this,” he pointed to his hair, “is all natural.”
Gordon leaned in. “Are you sure?” He stage-whispered. “You are getting very old, Scooter. We’re just looking out for you…” He put on his best innocent face.
“Yeah, I’m pretty sure I saw some crow’s feet the other day.” Virgil added.
“Alright fellas, cut it out, will you?” Scott rolled his eyes, smiling fondly as his brothers snickered. Back in the lounge, the phone rang loudly. “I’d better get that. Might be Dad…”
They watched as their brother disappeared back inside the house. Virgil threw a grateful glance in Gordon’s direction. “Thanks Gords. I needed that laugh, even if it’s at Scott’s expense.”
“At least Scott’s a good sport about it. We wouldn’t dare make those jokes if it genuinely upset him.” Gordon chuckled, and Virgil nodded in agreement before the aquanaut changed the subject. “Don’t want to strangle Alan anymore?”
“Oh no, I’m still gonna kill him.” The pilot smirked. “My improved mood just means he has more time to plan his escape route.”
“It better be a good one then.”
“Gordon!” Scott’s voice drifted out towards them from the house. “It’s for you!”
Virgil followed his brother upstairs and into the lounge, where Scott was waiting with the video caller on. “Is it Dad?”
Scott shook his head, looking at Gordon. Based on the look on his face, they could tell it was pretty serious. “WASP business…”
Gordon quickly made his way over to where the grim face of his old Commander sat. “Commander Shore.” He nodded respectfully, suddenly very aware of his lack of clothes. “What can I do for you?”
Shore took one look at Gordon before speaking. “I’m going to assume that you just went swimming, Lieutenant Tracy.” Gordon nodded. “Then I’ll say no more about that.” He cleared his throat. “I called you to give you an update, and to make you an offer.”
The aquanaut frowned. “It must be pretty big, if you’re calling someone who left the WASPs a long time ago.”
“I realise this must be confusing, Tracy. But in truth, we’re in a tight spot.” Gordon gestured for him to continue, and Shore sighed. “Stingray is short a crew member.” Gordon’s eyes widened. “We don’t know for how long, quite possibly a good while.”
“Who? And how?” Thunderbird 4’s pilot asked, immediately worried for his old friends. He needed to know the full story.
Shore gave him an apologetic look. “I’m afraid I can’t tell you the full story, Tracy. Former WASP or not, you no longer have Marineville clearance.”
“At least give me something, Commander.” Gordon pleaded. “They’re my friends. I need to know if they’re okay.” Out of the corner of his eye, the aquanaut saw his older brothers inching closer, ready to offer comfort in any way they could. Gordon found himself feeling incredibly grateful for it. The Commander just shook his head. Gordon sighed, changing the subject. “You mentioned an offer?”
Shore seemed thankful for the change in topic. “As you know, you served temporarily on Stingray under Captain Holden before Lieutenant Griffiths took over hydrophones.” Gordon nodded. “I’m inviting you to return to active service as a temporary replacement to fill the position on Stingray’s crew. I would be able to give you the full story then. Of course, you don’t have to accept, and I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t want to leave Thunderbird 4 without a pilot, but…”
“Thunderbird 4?” Gordon pushed his astonishment that Shore knew the truth far beneath the surface, attempting to play it off as a case of mistaken identity. In the background, Scott and Virgil looked as if they’d seen a ghost. “With all due respect sir, you must be mistaken. How could I possibly be an International Rescue operative?”
“Quite easily, I think you’ll find.” Shore smiled. “The stunts I’ve heard Thunderbird 4 pull off, well, there’s a few men who are capable of them, but there’s only three aquanauts I can think of who would actually try, one of them works for me, another I don’t know the location of. The third one is you.” Gordon could say nothing to change the older man’s mind. The Commander grinned in triumph, knowing he was correct. “Don’t worry. Your secret is safe with me…” He didn’t dare mention that he’d guessed it was his old friend Jeff who was running the whole outfit, thus making International Rescue a family affair.
“I’ll hold you to that.” Gordon muttered, and frowned in thought. “Well, for that reason, Commander, I’m afraid I’ll have to reject your offer to rejoin the Stingray crew. As much as I enjoyed my life at WASP, it’s time for me to stay close to my family…”
Commander Shore smiled. “Of course, I understand. Before I let you go though, I will give you some advice…” Gordon raised an eyebrow in curiosity. “Be careful who you trust, Gordon Tracy. Even our closest friends can cut us deeply. And the funny thing about betrayal is that it never comes from an enemy…” He moved to sign off. “I wish you luck, and good day.”
Gordon was faced with a black screen, playing the Commander’s last words to him over and over again in his head. The knowledge that his old Commander knew he was an International Rescue operative was the least of his worries. Betrayal never comes from an enemy… Shore had told him the truth of what had happened all this time. A member of the Stingray crew had gone rogue.
He was barely aware of what was going on around him. His brother's voices were right next to him, asking if he was okay and begging him to say something, but all he heard were whispers. He could see Virgil in front of him, shaking him gently, but he seemed so far away. He felt Scott wrap an arm around him in a sideways hug, slowly leading him elsewhere, but felt nothing. He just felt… numb.
The next time he was aware of anything, he was sitting on a flat rock, looking out towards his favourite place, the ocean, next to his favourite people in the whole world. He lifted his head off of Scott’s shoulder, stretching out his tired limbs, and just sat with his brothers, watching the sun go down on the horizon.
Alan came down from the house with an ice cold glass of water, which Gordon took gratefully. The youngest Tracy sat between Gordon and Virgil, loath to get between Smotherhen and his current concern. The four of them just sat in silence, worries and feuds of the day put aside temporarily...

Wild Blue Yonder - The Amazing Devil
Tumblr media
Wild Blue Yonder is a duet. In their verses, the vocalists are stubbornly contrarian, singing over each other as if trying to be heard while refusing to listen to the other. But their impish tone and fond familiarity seep through in their overlapping lyrics and feigned exasperation.
The playfully snippy inflections and parallel, reflective, overlapping language are very, very Dazai and Chuuya on their own. But I also read Chuuya in how Madeleine crows that she's stronger for no longer being filled with wonder and Dazai in how Joey accusatorily laments that Madeliene had convinced him he was younger and filled with wonder. It reminds me of how, in Fifteen, Dazai acts his age around Chuuya in a way he doesn't generally (playing video games, orchestrating a silly little party to hide his silly little sludge trap), and how bright and delighted Chuuya is when he fights.
Tumblr media
In the build towards the pre-chorus, the vocalists begin singing in tandem, snipping in response to each other instead of at each other, their dialogue becoming transparent. They capitulate pouncing on each other, demurring that it's one last time, as if for nostalgia's sake.
(Like Dazai and Chuuya, snipping at each other as they approached Lovecraft and Steinbeck, even though they slotted together as if they'd never been apart, falling into familiar formations and stratagems.)
Tumblr media
By the chorus, they're completely harmonized, playful, and childishly hiding in and with each other. They shed their pretense in this space they carved to revisit who they were when together, recalling fondly their idiosyncratic intimacy and how they clung to each other perhaps too tightly, admitting "I'd bruise you," "I'd bruise you too," as if they're saying "I love you," "I love you too."
This is how I imagine Dazai and Chuuya fall back into intimacy in the current canon timeline; first, pretentiously dismissive of the other, and then all at once playful and coltish.
Tumblr media
Dazai and Chuuya's skittishness and destructiveness bely the safety, reprieve, spontaneity, and restlessness they find in each other. They can rest against the other; they can riot and run amok too. They're unfettered together, they tether each other. Their intimacy is in their polarity, and where their contradictions grate on each other, they also fill in what the other lacks.
