got any cool tree/nature facts to share? yknow, from before everything went south
This is actually a really fun question for me, hold on-
Did you know that trees didn't actually exist for the first like, 90% of our planet's history. This rock is around 4.5 billion years old, and trees only colonized land as early as 470 million years ago! Most of them probably being mosses and liverworts with shallow roots. Vascular plants followed about 420 (SWAAAAG) million years ago, but even for tens of millions of years after, plants only grew about 3 feet (or a meter) off the ground!
And from about 420 million to 370 million years ago, a mysterious genus of creature called Prototaxites grew large trunks up to 3 feet (1 meter) wide, and almost 30 feet in height? After speculating that these might be some sort of prehistoric tree, a 2007 study from the University of Chicago and the National Museum of National History in Washington, D.C. concluded that these were fungi, not plants.

Too Big
He said he wanted to cut down the tree in his yard
because it was too big. Looking up at the majestic
king oak, I asked him, was there anything wrong
with it? Was it sick or dying, or splitting in two
such that it might splinter and smash his house?
He said, no, it was just too big; time for it to go.
A giant specimen, at least two hundred years old,
five feet in diameter, a hundred feet tall, branches
fifty feet wide, bearing brilliant leaves of scarlet,
a thousand acorns, home to dozens of birds and
squirrels and butterflies, having seen generations
of families play within its shade. But it had to go.
So I thought, sure. That makes perfect sense. Just
like the bison, the wooly mammoth, the sabertooth,
tiger, the dire wolf, the arctic bear, the rhinocerous,
the whale. All of them just too big. Too big to live.
Because that makes perfect sense. Yes. Of course.
