📚 A List Of Useful Websites When Making An RPG 📚

My timeloop RPG In Stars and Time is done! Which means I can clear all my ISAT gamedev related bookmarks. But I figured I would show them here, in case they can be useful to someone. These range from "useful to write a story/characters/world" to "these are SUPER rpgmaker focused and will help with the terrible math that comes with making a game".

This is what I used to make my RPG game, but it could be useful for writers, game devs of all genres, DMs, artists, what have you. YIPPEE

Writing (Names)

Behind The Name - Why don't you have this bookmarked already. Search for names and their meanings from all over the world!

Medieval Names Archive - Medieval names. Useful. For ME

City and Town Name Generator - Create "fake" names for cities, generated from datasets from any country you desire! I used those for the couple city names in ISAT. I say "fake" in quotes because some of them do end up being actual city names, especially for french generated ones. Don't forget to double check you're not 1. just taking a real city name or 2. using a word that's like, Very Bad, especially if you don't know the country you're taking inspiration from! Don't want to end up with Poopaville, USA

Writing (Words)

Onym - A website full of websites that are full of words. And by that I mean dictionaries, thesauruses, translators, glossaries, ways to mix up words, and way more. HIGHLY recommend checking this website out!!!

Moby Thesaurus - My thesaurus of choice!

Rhyme Zone - Find words that rhyme with others. Perfect for poets, lyricists, punmasters.

In Different Languages - Search for a word, have it translated in MANY different languages in one page.

Not the original asker, but how would you make NPC equivalents of PC mechs? Some stuff feels fairly intuitive, but there are some others that I'm less sure of/not sure how to do.

IPS-N

IPS-N mechs are probably the easiest, since there are many mechs that are close to being 1-to-1 NPC approximations of IPS-N mechs.

Blackbeard - One of the easiest, since the Berserker NPC is basically just a Blackbeard. It has the Chain Axe, it has the reckless speed and it has the inability to properly determine between friend and foe. It doesn't have the Blackbeard's enhanced Grapple shenanigans but those aren't really appropriate on an NPC mech anyway.

Caliban - Give an Assassin the Devil's Cough Shotgun and Explosive Knives.

Drake - Take the Bastion, increase its HP just a little, remove the Rotary Grenade Launcher and give it the Scourer's Thermal Lance, except make the Thermal Lance do Kinetic damage instead of Energy.

Lancaster - Another easy one. The Support NPC is just a slightly slower Lancaster. It has a Latch Drone, it has Restock Drones, it has Whitewash, it's got all the fun stuff.

Nelson - Yet another easy one. The Cataphract does pretty much exactly what the Nelson does, just with added trample.

Raleigh - This is much more difficult - so much so that for In Golden Flame, I created an entirely new NPC class, the Slinger, just to simulate it. If you don't have IGF, start with an Assault. Remove the Assault Rifle, Combat Knife and Hunker Down. Take the Drum Shotgun from the Goliath and call it a Hand Cannon. Give it the Archer's Impending Threat optional.

Tortuga - This one's fairly simple. Take a Sentinel, upscale it to Size 2, give it Punisher Ammunition and the Bombard's Siege Armor.

Vlad - Take a Berserker, give it the Nail Gun optional, and then give it the Bastion's Near-Threat Denial System.

Zheng - Take a Berserker, give it Juggernaut and Retribution, remove Aggression, remove the Chain Axe and replace it with the Demolisher's Demolition Hammer.

SSC

SSC mechs also have a lot of parallels, so it's pretty easy to model them.

Black Witch - Probably the hardest mech to model with existing NPCs. I created another whole new class, the Lodestone, just to simulate these guys.

Death's Head - Take a Sniper, cut the damage on its Anti-Material Rifle to 6/8/10, strip the Loading trait and permanently give it the effect of Deadmetal Rounds (shots become Line 20 instead of Range 25).

Dusk Wing - Literally just a Hornet.

Metalmark - Take an Assault and give it the Operator's Fade Generator.

Monarch - Depending on the exact flavour of Monarch you want, you can do two things. Either take a Rainmaker, scale it up to Size 2 and give it Atlas Missiles the Ace's Missile Swarm, or take an Ace, scale it up to Size 2 and give it Missile Swarm.

Mourning Cloak - Literally just a Specter.

Swallowtail - Literally just a Scout.

HORUS

HORUS mechs are where we need to get a little bit more inventive. This shit ain't natural boys.

Balor - Take a Hive, give it Electro-Nanite Cloud and the Berserker's Harpoon Cannon, then give it the Exotic template and choose Regenerator. Or, if you have No Room For A Wallflower, just use the Lurker NPC.

Goblin - It's a Witch.

Gorgon - Take a Sentinel, scale it up to Size 2 and give it the Archer's Impending Threat and Suppress reactions.

Hydra - There's not really an NPC that simulates a mech deploying 800 drones and honestly that's probably for the best.

Manticore - Give a Berserker the Superhot optional, the Cataphract's Capacitor Discharge, the Sentinel's Combat Shotgun and the Operator's Self-Erasure.

Pegasus - Do not attempt to simulate me, ha ha.

Harrison Armory

Home stretch here.

Barbarossa - Take a Goliath, give it the Ultra's Short-Cycle Lance or the Bombard's Bombard Cannon.

Genghis - Literally just a Pyro.

Iskander - This is just a Seeder.

Napoleon - Why does this mech exist

Saladin - Scale up an Aegis to Size 2.

Sherman - Take a Scourer and give it Emergency Vent.

Tokugawa - Take a Berserker and give it Superhot. Make its Chain Axe do Energy instead of Kinetic, and instead of Shredding on crit, make it do a couple of Burn damage.

Fasting Zones

Whilst fasting I decided to do some research into fasting and the different zones so that I could understand how to lose more weight whilst on a fast and wanted to share it with everyone.

I’m not promoting fasting in any way but I realise a lot of us do it and I want people to be informed and stay safe. Remember to keep yourself hydrated on a fast, drink some water or 0 cal drinks and please take a break if you start to feel sick or dizzy. You come first.

Anabolic - 0-4hrs

This zone lasts 4 hours on average and is usually spent processing the last meal you ate. After your body breaks down the carbs, protein and fat into glucose, amino acids and fatty acids your body converts this into energy for later use. People who snack a lot or have frequent meals usually spend most hours of the day in this state.

Depending on your diet and activity levels you can decrease this time, moving into the next zone faster, such as the fat burning zone.

Catabolic - 4-16hrs

This zone lasts 12 hours on average where the body’s blood glucose and insulin levels drop and you’ll start to use up the stored glycogen and fat for energy, this is called the breakdown state. Glucose is still the primary fuel source in this state, however when your glycogen reserves are nearing empty, you’ll start using fat.

Depending on how active you are during the day, doing exercise during this time will use up the glycogen stores quicker, moving you into the next zone.

Fat Burning - 16-24hrs

Whilst your body may always be burning fat, this zone is where it accelerates. Your body will now be in fat burning mode. Your body will always use some amount of glucose however it is now more dependant on fatty acids for fuel. Your brain still needs glucose to function, any glucose still being produced within the body will primarily be used by the brain whilst the rest of the body relies on fat for fuel.

Ketosis - 24-72hrs

Your fast is now a multi-day fast. Exercise can accelerate the transition into this zone. Your primary fuel source is fatty acids and ketone bodies plus glucose. The body now relies more and more on fat and ketone bodies in this state and will prioritise burning fatty acids with ketone bodies being spared for the brain.

Ketone bodies: this refers to 3 molecule types acetone, acetoacetate and beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB). Acetoacetate and BHB can be used for energy production.

It is suggested that a healthy fast end after 3 days due to health risks. Take a break, eat a meal, drink lots of water and rest. You did well to reach three days, don’t risk your health.

Deep Ketosis - 3+ Days

The body is now in a prolonged fasting zone. After day 3, glucose and insulin levels stay low and hunger will stay suppressed. You’ll see a decrease in IGF-1 a hormone involved in growth and development. Insulin and Glucose production will fall around 30% or more.

Here we go!

Voltron - 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

We gave Voltron a 5 out of 10 - one for each lion. It's a novel concept, and it's an iconic design. The blue glows are a nice touch, but overall it's a bit average compared to some other big ships.

Zarkon's Fleet/War Ship - 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

We thought this fleet, specifically the command ship, deserved a 8/10. The purple glow is very Galran and the colors coordinate nicely. It remains sleek while still being a large ship.

MFE Fighter - 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

We gave the MFE fighter ships a 6 out of 10. It's fine. It's a classic, earth-class fighter ship. ..Nothing wrong with it. It's just. ...Just fine. No wow factor. Nothing against it. Just. Fine.

Altean Castle of Lions - 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

The Altean Castleship gets a solid 10/10. It is both a castle, and a ship, and executes both functions on command and with ease, also while being exceptionally old.

Galra Central Command - 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

7/10. Galra Central Command is extremely intimidating and large. Due to its nature as the central hub of activity, it's complex in its functionality.

IGF Atlas - Carrier Form 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

IGF Atlas in its standard flight mode, which we've called 'carrier mode' as opposed to its transformed state, is a pretty robust ship, and comes in with a 8/10. It matches with the MFE color scheme and is clearly delineated as a command ship. It also vaguely mirrors the Galra command ship, but is long instead of wide, allowing for use in Earth atmosphere.

Zaiforge Cannon - 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

8/10 for the brutal Galran assault weapon - and only 'loosely' categorized as a ship. It is a vessel that goes into space and is piloted, so we decided to include it. Extra points for the cannon part.

IGF Atlas - Gundam Fighter Form 🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀🧀

Atlas in Fighter Form gets a solid 12/10. It lands the throwback to Voltron's form, but brings some extra... curves to the game.

We didn't even count the cheese. Sincline is ❤/10. It's a very organic ship design, which is unusual compared to others. Its movement is graceful and it is both strong and powerful; often ships tend to excel at either armor or weapons; rarely both.

There’s a well-established inverse relationship between a dog’s size and its expected lifespan. Bernese mountain dogs and Great Danes live just six to eight years, for example, while corgis can live up to 15 years and Chihuahuas up to two decades.

San Francisco biotech company Loyal wants to close that gap, and is developing an experimental drug to extend the lifespan and improve the quality of life of large and giant dog breeds. Today, the company announced that based on early data, the US Food and Drug Administration has determined that Loyal’s drug has a “reasonable expectation of effectiveness.” The company hasn’t yet shown that its drug actually extends lifespan, but the FDA decision signals the agency’s confidence in Loyal’s approach, and the drug will soon be tested in a bigger trial.

“Big dog owners want more time with their dogs,” says Loyal CEO Celine Halioua. “It’s really heartbreaking to people that they don’t live that long.” She argues that the wide variety in dog sizes isn’t natural, but a result of selective breeding by humans to create dogs with certain physical traits or that can perform specific tasks. On average, mixed-breed dogs live longer than their purebred counterparts.

So far, the FDA has not approved any drugs to expand the lifespan of animals—or humans, for that matter. “This is completely novel,” says Linda Rhodes, former CEO of pet biotech company Aratana Therapeutics and a consultant for Loyal. It’s difficult to study life-extension drugs in people, she says, because humans live relatively longer lives than other species. But starting with dogs—and the breeds with the shortest lives—could yield important clues. “The implication for other species, including humans, is pretty profound,” she says.

Loyal’s experimental drug is an injection designed to be given every three to six months by a veterinarian. The drug is meant to lower levels of a hormone called IGF-1, which is involved in growth and metabolism and has been linked to dog size. Large dogs have a genetic variant that leads to high levels of IGF-1 and small dogs have a different variant that results in lower levels.

Inhibiting this hormone has been shown to increase lifespan in worms, flies, and rodents. In humans, both very high and very low levels increase mortality risk, while a midrange is associated with the lowest mortality.

In early studies, Loyal dosed 130 research dogs with its investigational drug. Halioua says the company has shown that it can reduce IGF-1 levels in large dogs to those seen in medium-size dogs. Two dogs had loose stools for a day or two after receiving the injection, but beyond that, Halioua says, no major side effects have been observed.

To determine the drug’s effect on lifespan, the company is planning a bigger study that will start in 2024 or 2025, and enroll about 1,000 large and giant breed companion dogs that are at least 7 years old. Each will receive either the experimental drug or a placebo.

Halioua says the company aims to have its drug on the market by 2026. But first, Loyal still has to prove to the FDA—which regulates both human and veterinary medicines—that the injection is safe and that the drug can be reliably manufactured. At that point, the FDA can grant conditional approval, a temporary authorization that lasts five years and allows the drug to be sold by prescription. During that time, Loyal will collect effectiveness data and apply for full approval.

Loyal is also working on two other drugs: a pill version for large and giant dog breeds, and a pill for older dogs of all breeds.

Danika Bannasch, a veterinary geneticist at the University of California, Davis, who specializes in canine genetics, says that IGF-1 is only one factor thought to be associated with dog size and longevity. “As for targeting it, I think it’s a bit premature. We know that smaller breed dogs live longer than larger breed dogs, but we don’t know how much of that is due to the influence of IGF-1,” she says.

In a study published last month, Bannasch and her colleagues identified another possible driver of dog longevity, a gene called ERBB4. Studying more than 300 golden retrievers, they compared the DNA from blood samples of dogs that were still alive at 14 years of age to those that died before age 12. They found that dogs with certain variants of the gene survived longer—on average, 13.5 years compared to 11.6 years. Bannasch cautions that the work was conducted in only one breed and that it’s not known whether these variants are associated with longer life in other types of dogs.

The ERBB4 gene is the canine version of HER4, a human gene closely related to HER2, which is associated with cancer. Studying the canine gene could have implications for human health. Researchers are also testing new cancer treatments in dogs with the hope that these therapies could help people.

Giving an experimental drug to healthy dogs is different from treating sick dogs. Bannasch says Loyal’s drug will need to clear a high safety bar for owners to be comfortable giving it to their pets. She also thinks a drug would need to show more than a few months of life extension before people would want to buy it for their dogs. “As a pet owner, I think anything over a year would be great. I suspect people would be really interested in that,” she says.

Linda Rhodes says that humans owe it to dogs to make up for the genetic misfortunes they’ve inherited due to hundreds of years of breeding. “We’ve bred dogs to have problems because we want them to look or act a certain way,” she says. “It’s our responsibility to figure out how we can help.”

貧乏によるストレスは離婚や介護よりも強く健康状態の悪化に関連していることが判明（Gigazine）2024年2月2日

人生には経済的な問題や配偶者との離婚、親の介護といったさまざまな問題が付きまとい、これらの��トレスは精神だけでなく健康にも悪影響を及ぼします。イギリスの研究チームが行った新たな研究で、経済的なストレスはその他のストレス要因よりも強く健康状態の悪化に関連していることが示されました。

イギリスのユニヴァーシティ・カレッジ・ロンドンとキングス・カレッジ・ロンドンの研究チームは、さまざまなタイプの慢性的なストレスが高齢者の健康バイオマーカーとどのように関連しているのかを調査しました。

研究には、50歳以上のイギリス人を追跡調査したEnglish Longitudinal Study of Ageing(イギリス老化縦断研究)が2008～2012年にかけて収集した合計4934人のデータが用いられました。被験者は面接や自己記入のアンケートに回答したほか、看護師によるバイオマーカーの採取を受けました。今回の研究に用いられた4934人の年齢の中央値は65歳でした。

今回の研究で調査されたストレス要因は、将来的に必要な経済的リソースが枯渇する可能性がある「経済的なストレス」、過去1年間に私生活で成人の介護を行っていた「介護のストレス」、歩行やしゃがむといった行動に困難がある「障害のストレス」、長年の病気や健康問題により活動が制限される「病気のストレス」、過去2年以内に親や配偶者との死別を経験した「死別のストレス」、過去2年以内に離婚を経験した「離婚のストレス」の6つでした。

また、被験者の健康状態のリスクは、ストレスに反応して産生されるホルモンのコルチゾール、炎症への免疫反応に関連するCRPとフィブリノゲン、老化と長寿に関連するIGF-1という血液中の4つのバイオマーカーを通じて測定されました。

分析の結果、何らかのストレスにさらされていると報告した被験者は、4年後の追跡調査で高リスクのカテゴリーに分類される可能性が61％高まりました。この結果は遺伝的要因や年齢、性別、ライフスタイル、調査開始時点の健康状態といった要因を除外しても確認されました。

また、複数のストレスを持っていた被験者では、ストレス要因が増えるごとに高リスクカテゴリーに分類される可能性が19％増加しました。ところが、「経済的なストレス」のみを報告した人は、それだけで4年後に高リスクカテゴリーに分類される可能性が59％も高くなることが判明しました。つまり、「経済的なストレス」はその他のストレス要因よりも強く健康状態の悪化に関連していたというわけです。

経済的なストレスが健康により強い悪影響を及ぼす理由について、論文の筆頭著者でユニヴァーシティ・カレッジ・ロンドンの博士研究員であるオデッサ・ハミルトン氏は、経済的なストレスは生活のさまざまな側面に関与しているからかもしれないと指摘。経済状況の悪化は家族間の対立や社会的な疎外につながるほか、最終的には飢餓やホームレス状態などに陥る可能性もあるとのこと。ハミルトン氏は、「今回の研究では、経済的ストレスが生物学的健康に最も有害であることがわかりましたが、これを確立するにはさらなる研究が必要です」と述べました。

今回の研究結果は、必ずしもストレスが長期的な健康問題を直接引き起こしていると証明したわけではありません。しかし、ストレスが高齢者の体に大きな影響を与えており、ストレス源によって身体的影響が異なる可能性を示唆しています。

ハミルトン氏は、「免疫系と神経内分泌系がうまく連携して機能すれば、体のホメオスタシス(恒常性)が維持され、健康が保たれます。しかし、慢性的なストレスはこの生物学的経路を乱すため、病気につながる可能性があります」と説明しました。

被爆者団体「まだまだ戦わなければ」　引き続き「黒い雨」訴訟支援など確認　広島（RCCニュース）2024年2月2日

広島県被団協の代表者会議が2日、広島市で開かれ、引き続き「黒い雨訴訟」の支援などを続けていくことを確認しました。

広島県被団協恒例の「新春代表者会議」には、県内各地の被爆者団体など、約40人が出席しました。

広島県原爆被害者団体協議会（県被団協）箕牧智之理事長「被爆から79年、高齢化でこうした集会は集まりにくいが、戦争犠牲者・原爆犠牲者は、まだまだ戦わなければならない」

現在、被爆者の高齢化で、団体の存続が課題となっています。坂町にある被爆者団体は、高齢化を理由にいったん解散したものの、被爆2世などで再結成し、黒い雨訴訟の相談会のチラシを配る活動などをしたということです。

原爆投下直後に降った「黒い雨」をめぐっては、援護対象区域を広げた国の新基準でも、被爆者手帳の申請を却下された人たちが、取り消しを求める裁判を続けています。

厚生労働省の有識者検討会では、現時点で降った範囲を判定することは困難だとしていますが、広島県被団協は引き続き、被爆者の救済を国に求めていくとしています。

「公園内は軍施設と一体でそのメッセージは『戦争』」　被団協の講師団がパールハーバー視察報告　広島市の姉妹公園協定をめぐって（RCCニュース）2024年2月2日

広島市が、平和公園と姉妹公園協定を結んだハワイの「パールハーバー国立記念公園」について、協定に異議を唱えている市民団体が、現地視察の報告会を開きました。

アメリカ・ハワイ州にあるパールハーバーには、アメリカ軍の基地や、1941年の真珠湾攻撃で亡くなった兵士などを追悼する記念館などがあります。

広島市は、去年6月、パールハーバー国立記念公園と平和公園は「共通の理想を達成するために、国際協力と相互利益を促進する」として、姉妹公園協定を締結しました。

被爆者などでつくる団体は先月、現地を視察した報告会で、公園は軍の施設があるため、自由に撮影ができないことなどを紹介しました。

広島市は、姉妹公園協定の対象を、ビジターセンター周辺とアリゾナ記念館など４施設に限定し、軍の施設は含めないとしています。

しかし団体は、対象の施設が、核兵器の威力や開発を誇る軍の記念館や基地と隣り合っていることから、「公園内は一体で、目に飛び込んでくるのは『戦争』というメッセージだ」と訴えました。

広島でしか買えない　人気の「むさし」と「うえの」の弁当　新幹線で大阪に直送（RCCニュース）2024年2月2日

広島でしか買うことのできない人気の弁当を、大阪のイベントで販売するために、新幹線で直送しました。

広島駅の新幹線ホームです。出来上がったばかりの「むさし」の「若鶏むすび」が、新幹線の到着を待っていました。JR大阪駅で開かれている広島・山口の人気商品を販売するイベントに、新幹線で素早く届けるためです。

記者「スタッフ用の入り口が開きました。新幹線が停車する1分の間に積み込みが行われます。今、むさしのお弁当が運びこまれました」

「むさし」に加えて「うえの」の「あなごめし」という広島でしか買えない人気弁当を、イベントの期間中、4回新幹線でスピード輸送するということです。

JR西日本は、荷物を早く定時で運べる新幹線の活用を、検討していくということです。

「私たちの病院を助けて」病床ひっ迫、疲労の蓄積被災地の医療は課題山積（石川テレビ）

被災地の医療は課題が山積みです。珠洲市の診療所は断水が続き十分な医療が行えていません。奥能登の医療体制は綱渡りの状態が続いています。

珠洲市内にある小西医院。普段は内科、循環器内科、小児科の3つの診療をしています。しかし、今はかかりつけ患者への薬の処方だけです。

小西堅正院長「（正院地区は）いわゆる電気の復旧も一番遅かったんです。サーチライトやってそれでもなかなかカルテも散らばって診療にならないので、やっぱりこれは無理があった」

地震発生後は停電のため電話も使えず、体にカイロを貼り懐中電灯などで辺りを照らしながら再開に向け準備をしてきたそうです。

電気が通ったのは地震から22日目。今は1日に20人から30人ほどの患者が薬の受け取りにやって来るそうです。

小西堅正院長「金沢に避難された患者さんから『元気でいますよ』と電話だけかかって来ることもあるんです。無理して頑張っても誰も（珠洲市に）いなくなるんじゃないかなと心が折れそうになるときも実際ありましたけど、そうやって『自分らも必ず戻るから頑張ってね』と言われると、やっぱり自分ももうちょっと頑張らんといかんなと元気づけられる。（人手不足などもあるが）人的支援もいただきながら少しずつ戻していければと思っています」

一方、こちらは七尾市の恵寿（けいじゅ）総合病院。病床のひっ迫に危機感を募らせています。

恵寿総合病院神野正博理事長「非常に病床はひっ迫していて空いているベッドは10数床ということで、救急患者を受け入れるためにその10数床をどうやって空けるかを考えながらいろいろと患者の流れをつくっています」

別館の一部で天井が崩落するなどの被害が発生。スタッフのおよそ1割は現在も避難所など自宅以外からの通勤を余儀なくされています。手術や透析などの病院機能はこれまでにほぼ全て回復しましたが、被災地の医療現場では先行きの見えない状況が続いています。

恵寿総合病院神野正博理事長「（この病院は）手術などがちゃんと機能しているという意味で、（今後）療養だけの患者さんはここではなくて他のところで受けていただくという形が必要だと思います。職員が非常に疲弊しています。全職員の10パーセントくらいは自分の家以外から、全体の3パーセント程度の方は避難所から出勤しているんですね。全国の病院に呼びかけているんですけども、私たちの病院を助けてくださいと。少し職員を休ませて、そして長持ちさせるということが必要かなと思っています。これからの医療を止めないために、私たちがいま一番必要なのは人材の支援だと思っています」

2月2日夜、直径約290mの小惑星が地球付近を通過　NASAも監視中（Forbes）2024年2月2日

スタジアムサイズの小惑星が日本時間2月2日金曜日の夜に地球の近くを通過する。そして、そのサイズと地球への接近距離のため、NASAの科学者らは危険がないか監視している。

直径約290mの小惑星が、秒速約18kmで地球から約270万km（月までの距離の約7倍）以内のところを通過するとNASAのジェット推進研究所は発表した。

「2008 OS7」と呼ばれるその小惑星は、太陽を962日周期で周回しているため、次に戻ってくるのは2026年となるが、その次に地球へ接近する2037年では、地球から約1600万kmの距離を通過する見込みだ。

NASAは、地球から約750万km以内に接近する直径140m以上の天体を「潜在的に危険な小惑星」に分類しているため監視している。

地球付近を通過するのは日本時間2月2日金曜日の午後11時41分頃と予測されている。肉眼で見えることはできないが、NASAがバーチャル小惑星トラッカーを提供して小惑星の位置をリアルタイムで伝えているほか、Virtual Telescope Projectがライブ中継を行う。

小惑星は惑星と同様に太陽を周回している岩石質の天体だが、惑星よりずっと小さいとNASAは説明している。約46億年前に太陽系が形成された時の残骸からできている。小惑星2008 OS7は、アポロ群と呼ばれる地球軌道と交差する可能性のある1万8232個の小惑星からなるグループに属している。

近年NASAは、地球に接近する小惑星の脅威をより深刻に捉えている。2022年のDARTミッションでは、小惑星の軌道を変更するテストを行った。NASAは探査機を宇宙に飛ばして小惑星に衝突させ、その公転周期を32分短くした。さらにNASAは、地球に接近しているベンヌと呼ばれる小惑星を研究するミッションで探査機OSIRIS-RExを送り込んだ。同探査機は小惑星の標本を採取し、2023年9月に地球に届けたが、発見内容は未だに公開されていない。科学者らは、ベンヌが2182年に地球に衝突する可能性を信じており、それがベンヌの探査が行われている理由だ。OSIRIS-RExミッションの科学者チームは、ベンヌが2182年に、テキサス州サイズの領域に2700分の1の確率で衝突する可能性があると考えている。Icarus誌に掲載された2023年の論文による。

2月2日に地球近傍を通過する小惑星は2008 OS7だけではない。あと2つ小惑星が近づいている。小惑星2024 BJ3は今年発見された直径約21mの飛行機サイズの小惑星だ。2008 OS7よりもずっと近い86万km以内に接近する。小惑星2024 BP1も飛行機サイズだがやや大きい直径約40mほどで、この中では最も遠い340万km付近を通過する。
