Paris, yesterday (03/23/23). This is an excerpt from a video by journalist Amar Taoualit posted on twitter
This is what they’re doing to a peaceful, registered-with-the-proper-authorities march.
You can hear protesters shouting “children! there are children!” and “that’s my grandfather! my grandfather is on the ground!”
I think some families felt safe going because traditionally, union-backed, “registered” marches are peaceful and the riot police waits until they officially end, when only the more radical protesters are left, to attack. Not saying that is fine, but there was a tacit agreement for peace during the first hours of a protest. (That’s exactly what happened in Lyon yesterday, and there were also a few kids among protesters. It ended up being fine but it made me very anxious to see them, and it looks like I was right to worry.)
Things turned extremely violent in the night. I don’t feel like chronicling it, but suffice to say there were more that 900 fires in Paris. I don’t know what to think of the overwhelming silence from international media on the subject.
Anyway, I know that in principle we should all be able to protest and the police shouldn’t attack, and we’re supposed to be a democracy and we shouldn’t bow down to wanna-be autocrats that want to suppress our voices, etc.
La réalité c’est que pour quelques temps en tout cas, il faut laisser nos enfants à la maison, et que si vous êtes âgé, malade (asthmatique !), déjà blessé, personne handicapée, etc. il vaut peut-être mieux passer votre tour pour ces manifs-là. Il y a d’autres façons d’agir.
Notamment, je suis sûre que les syndicats ont besoin d’aide logistique et d’argent, et LFI, dont les députés sont sur le terrain, sur les piquets de grève, a certainement toujours besoin de plus de militants (j’ai pas ma carte chez eux pour être claire, mais je pense que c’est le parti qui soutient le plus sincèrement le mouvement).

I'm watching the State of the Union and I'm reminded why no matter what, we won't have justice as long as we have representative democracy. Biden just claimed "I will not rest until we rescue all the hostages held by Gaza" and then realized it was bad press to not be against the Palestinian genocide and then immediately started stating he wanted a ceasefire and wanted innocent Palestinians to be protected, and THEN stated he sided with Israel.
Typical politician... Just say the words people want to hear about the issues they care about just to get votes so you can stay in power. Politicians don't, won't, and never will care about what we want except for how it relates to them.
As long as we let them have power over us, we will never have power over what atrocities they will support and enable, both on our own land, and all over the world. The US government won't stop destroying the environment and keeping us in poverty if we ask them politely to stop. They won't dismantle a police system built on favoring police officers and the incarceration and execution of innocent people, they won't give stolen land back, they won't completely outlaw slavery or dismantle the numerous eugenics laws towards disabled people that still exist. They won't be against genocide, even when it's actively happening.
And even if they do, it'll be a means to an end. It'll be a distraction. They'll just be dangling it in front of our faces saying "Look! We did what you wanted! We're on your side! We totally care about social justice!"
Although I dont want to, I'm voting for Biden just so Trump doesn't become president. But mark my words, whats stopping the next democratic president from doing stuff like Joe Biden did? Lying to us about caring about justice, just saying what we want to hear? And even if we vote, say, a socialist president, whats stopping them from doing the same thing?
I dont know what we do about this, but when the time comes, we need to organize on a large scale and do SOMETHING. I dont know what or how, but we need to change something, and not be okay with system where people in power make the big choices for us, and we just hope they do what we want with not a care in the world about injustice.

And as far as I'm aware, I've only been reblogging stuff about the antisemitism that has resulted from this situation.
To be honest i wanted to ignore this whole thing bc I do not have the spoons to sort thru a very complicated history. I still have a lot of the hashtags blacklisted so I can choose when to use my spoons on it.
But I watched my jewish mutuals and the jewish people I follow and trust to have nuanced opinions on a wide variety of marginalizations we have in common, get increasingly hateful messages, for simply asking people to not derail their posts about war in a country they do not even live in.
I watch them get dragged into discussing the conflict bc no one was listening to them.
I watched people move/deactivate their blogs bc people wouldn't stop.
I watched leftists spread posts that had such obvious antisemitic rhetoric, even I noticed. I've only been actively paying attention and learning about antisemitism for about 4 years now, but it was apparently quite a headstart compared to the activists that only started learning and posting about this whole thing last year.
I dont claim to have an opinion on Israel or Palestine. My stance is the same as it is for everything. Nothing makes bigotry okay.
You don't get to misgender a trans person bc they are racist.
You don't get to be racist to a person of color bc they are transphobic.
You don't get to suicide bait people, period.

so funny thing with your dont look back thing, nearly all the political allies of Leia and folks, generally like VERY few that we know are actually directly democratic. like Padme former job could count sorta, but how democratic MONARCHY would work.... although Darsana could be a mostly democratic on via his Senatorship. found it funny cause Bail is like assigned by the queen and padme is hers as well, which fair, Senator is a really bad term for what they are, diplomat would be the better term.
I mean, I've thought a lot about how the Senate is ostensibly a democratic body when actually there is no planetary regulation to how they "elect" their senators.
I've ultimately decided to not go down this specific route for the fic, but arguably, the Republic is...not a government. They don't have anyone to enforce their "laws." The GFFA is huge. Like, I cannot stress this enough, taking the loose shapes of government for countries and slapping it down as a framework for how tens of thousands of planets are "ruled" by a "democracy" was always, at its core, bullshit. The Empire, with it's huge military and aggressive enforcement couldn't prevent the Alliance from camping out on abandoned planets, which, we know as residents of this good earth, is more than enough space to develop multiple entire civilizations. Frankly, as horrifying as it was, the Death Star was about the only logical conclusion space fascists could come to for a total control endgame.
(That or implanting chips like the clones had but whoops, the past won't exist until 15 years after the future, so...)
That isn't to say that the Republic, or something like it, wouldn't exist and serve a purpose. Having a forum where people in disparate governments agree to things like trade rules and enforce them by, say, refusing to trade with people not in the group, or at worse rates, could definitely explain a Republic sized coalition of planets/planetary systems. They could even develop things like anti-slavery agreements, taxes dues, a group of negotiators loyal to the "Republic" instead of to individual planets or systems for theoretically unbiased diplomacy.
But yeah, if you notice that Leia's views on democracy don't match Padmé's assertions from AotC and RotS(released post 9/11 guys, Anakin's character was not the only casualty of that time), it is 100% because she was going to be the hereditary ruler of a planet and had no problem with that.
Keep in mind that democracy, in many ways, is more effective the more direct it is, because even self-interested politicians have to give you what you as a majority want if they have to win each of your individual votes. But that is incredibly hard to organize and maintain. Especially because the elected officials figure out really quickly they don't want to be beholden to so many contradictory interests.
And the more indirect a democracy becomes, the more your welfare relies on the innate charity/sense of responsibility of your representatives. Yes, as people who weren't voted into office, Padmé and Bail don't actually answer directly to their people. Padmé's on a bit thinner of ice because she's appointed by a directly elected queen, so Jamillia has motive to oust Padmé if she threatens Jamillia's re-election.
But Bail? Our favorite, made it through most of the Empire, stuck to his guns, initiated the Rebellion, raised his baby girl right? Yeah, no, he's a nepotism boy, and everyone would have been screwed if he didn't have the moral and ethical fortitude of mountains.

Yeah so what are your thoughts on the dark ritual in DAO?
LOL ok so i'll try to give two (relatively short) answers, one is a gameplay one, and the other is how i justified in from the lore perspective with my HoF
(GAMEPLAY) The intro of the game where you gather the blood of darkspawn, yeah, the ritual of joining is shrouded in mystery, like "why we don't tell you what is the ritual? dont worry about it wink wink", so you think "hmm is there something wrong with it, what's up?"
So then you start the ritual and BAM you can die during it. One way or another. It feels like "damn ok i'm in it now, but i guess i can see why they kept it a secret, ok, now to play the game and be a hero". Suprises are seemingly over.
then BAM at the end of the game is another reveal that to kill the Archdemon you need to die with it, and, like, ok, it is a bit sudden to give that info to the player who already went through with the Landsmeet and had some plot expectations from it. It feels like a rug being swept from under your feet; and then BAM again here comes Morrigan and says "oh btw you can just not die, just let me have the baby", and, this whole part seems very rushed? Like, ok, there were supposed to be any stakes with choosing who's going to die to end the blight, and suddenly there isn't? (Thats if you're playing a male warden ofc, who can do so himself no matter who's he is in romance with, or you can try and force Alistair to sleep with Morrigan, which i'm not just a fan of. He's already eager to sacrifice himself if you say "i don't wanna die" to Riordan when he says you gotta die to kill AD so why would he agree to a ritual (that he doesn't benefit from) from an apostate (that he dislikes)? If you romance Alistair, then forcing him to sleep with Morrigan is the only choice you have to save your loved one and yourself, but again, would you force someone you love to cheat on you with a person he hates? For a ritual? That he would oppose?)
So, yeah, that whole "die to win" and dark ritual reveal was kinda badly executed IMO
now, to LORE part of why i actually don't mind using the dark ritual
People say that even from in-universe perspective it would be weird to agree to the ritual since the old god would technically still be alive and Morrigan is shady, but you know what? My HoF dgaf.
Now, let's take a look. My HoF is a male Cousland rogue, who was opposed to joining the Grey Wardens when Duncan arrived at the Highever, so that's the angle from which i'm basing my dark ritual choice. It'd be different for different origins methinks.
During Howe's massacre of the castle, Duncan presented the HoF with a "choice":
"Die here or i'll save you to conscript you into GW"
Now. I'm replaying DA2 currently, and this Duncan's offer very much reminds me of Arishok's "we give choice. they can choose to not accept qun and die or to accept the qun and live. #democracy"
So my HoF, who previously stated that he has no interest in joining Grey Wardens, feels very cheated by Duncan using HoF's life as a bargaining chip. It shouldn't have happened! First, Howe slaughtered his entire family, and now Duncan is using the moment to claim HoF's life for his own goal to add numbers to his "glorious murder-suicide" cult? That's fucked up. But HoF doesn't have much choice if he wants to live, so he accepts the offer, with main goal being survival to avenge his family and to live in spite of it all.
So, now we get to the joining, HoF meets Alistair, they gather the blood, meet Morrigan, and go back to the joining ritual. Suddenly HoF sees that you can die from the joining ritual, and from the Duncan also if you reject the joining ritual. what the fuck. Again, there's is no other choice than to accept the outcome that guarantees the bigger chance of survival. HoF goes through with the joining ritual, feeling even more disdain towards GWs.
Joining, Ostagar, saving by Flemeth. HoF and Alistair are the only GW survivors. This is where HoF was about to say "fuck it" and disappear, until Flemeth gathered his ass, after which he decided to wait with rush decisions.
While traveling with Morrigan and Alistair to Lothering, HoF had time to gather his thoughts. He learned that Alistair considered GWs to be his family, and HoF could relate to losing it all at one night, so his disdain towards GWs melted away a bit just for this one guy, who basically lived through the same experience as he did. HoF also found Morrigan interesting and could see reason in some of her actions and decisions, thus they started to form some sort of friendship.
While traveling with these two, HoF found to like Alistair not for just being someone with the same lived experience, but also for a person that he is. You could say it was love, but HoF knew that that couldn't happen, so the best he could do was to be a very good friend.
The longer they traveled, the more HoF understood Alistair's point of view on Wardens as a family, since the adventuring party themselves became some sort of found family to each other. Some of them may not like one another, but they still care for each other's well-being because at the very least, you need them to reach your own goals (committing the dark ritual; avenging the Cousland family; ending the Blight), and at best, they're the ones who you consider friend or even more.
So all this said, HoF found more and more reasons to stay alive, not anymore blinded by anger and revenge, but also for helping those he holds close to his heart. Ending the Blight transformed from being something that he was forced, almost ensalved to do, into something more of a favor for someone he loves.
After gathering all armies, HoF traveled to Denerim where he finally had the chance to kill Howe. He decided to kill everyone who ever associated themselves with Howe, anyone who ever helped him to kill Cousland's family. Be it conspirators, merchants, or even his kids. (Keeping true to his promise, HoF later killed Nathaniel immediately upon learning who he was)
At the Landsmeet, HoF was determined to help Alistair in avoiding the throne, as he wasn't as concerned with grand political scheme as he was with the Alistair's feelings. Thus Anora was made queen, Loghain was executed and Alistair happily gave up any and all rights he had to the royalty. Seemingly a happy end, now to just go to Redcliffe and slay a big evil dragon and the friend's errand is done? WRONG
HEY
GREY WARDEN
WE WANT YOU TO DIE SO FUCKING BAD
HoF and Alistair learn from Riordan that to kill an Archdemon, a warden must sacrifice himself, dying in the process.
He survived the slaughter of his family, he survived the joining, he survived the Fade, Deep Roads, ancient curses and armies of undead, just to die anyways? No. Not gonna happen. HoF will not die killing an Archdemon.
...
"I'll do it"
Facecrack of the fucking century. The man who was the only one HoF could relate to, the man who he considered his closest friend, the man he loved and went all this way for. Alistair says he will kill himself to slay the archdemon.
Without even a chance to say his word, HoF gets shut out by Riordan telling them to get ready for march to Denerim tomorrow. Coming out of the room, he is on the point of breaking apart between his will to live in spite of it all and his desire to save Alistair. There seems no other choice than to forfeit his life and sacrifice himself, that is until he happens on Morrigan in the middle of his room.
And now, now we have this picture of Morrigan suggesting HoF a dark ritual, which would save the chosen warden from untimely death and help Morrigan herself with her goal.
Of course HoF would agree to the ritual.
Of course HoF would help his friend who he had no reason to disagree with prior, fully knowing she has her secrets, but still considering her family
Of course HoF would do anything to save Alistair, whom he loves. Had he known about what it takes to kill an Archdemon, he'd force him to become a king, but alas, the "glorious murder-suicide" cult wouldn't tell all it's secrets neither to him, nor Alistair.
So HoF goes through with the ritual, and when the time comes, he leaves Alistair to defend the gates of the city, much to his surprise. HoF has one chance to do it right, and he cant afford to fuck it up even in the slightest. Doesn't matter what Alistair thinks of him, "how could the man who only yesterday refused to die to archdemon, suddnly leave me here to fight lesser battle, and go to face the dragon himself, without me". It is not important. What is important, is that HoF gonna save Alistair, and that HoF is gonna live in spite of it all.
so yeah lorewise i think dark ritual is pretty neat

help me is this too much for an essay?? Its about the Haitian Revolution for my history class and im so tired i cant think if i did too much or not:
Jovenal Moise, the 43rd president in Haiti, was assassinated in Haiti on July 7, 2021. He was shot and killed in his own home in Port-au-Prince to which they say a group of Colombian mercenaries was behind the attack, and among them, a Haitian doctor ordering as a plot to become president. Present day photos from Haiti show poverty, burning houses and buildings. There are people covered in soot and ash, and people living in famish and poor living conditions. Buildings are crushed and people look upset and crying. And in 1789, the people of Haiti banded together and began the haitian revolution. They overthrew slavery and were heavily inspired by the recent french revolution.
So still in 1789, the King and Queen were rich scumbags, who mistreated anyone lower than themselves, leading their land and the 3rd estate to poverty, starvation, and even death. Their monarchy was total control and their word was final, meaning that if you went against their word you were sentenced to death. Punishment was death by axe. They eventually invented the guillotine which proved to be more efficient and effective. The 3rd estate grew tired of the mistreatment and disrespect and revolted. This led to events like the storming of Bastille and the tennis court oath. The declaration of the rights of man and citizen even state “Men are born and remain free and equal in rights. Social distinctions may be founded only upon the general good.” (Avalon Project) This was written by The National Assembly of France in 1789 to fight for freedom under a court of law that they wished to create. This differentiates from the reign the king and queen had over France as opposed to the constitution the 3rd estate wanted to grow to establish personal freedom and separation from the monarchy. The ideas of these overcoming revolutions have traveled and spread due to word of mouth and change in the country. Other countries noticed the change in France and it influenced them to make a similar change in their regime.
And the difference between the monarchy and the democracy imposes a major discussion. The monarchy was full control, full power, total say. So the French Monarchy held France in total control, and this was kinda ticking off the people of France. But they fought for their freedom, their democracy, where everyone can vote, and can make decisions about major choices in their own community/country. So, naturally driven by the determination of France, Haiti took inspiration from France and began what is known as the Haitian Revolution.
One colonist writes presciently of the colonists’ dilemma in negotiating with the slaves: “For, if we reward with freedom those who have burned our plantations and massacred our people, the slaves who have hitherto remained loyal will do likewise in order to receive the same benefit. Then nothing more can be said: the whites must perish.” ’ This violence was happening because the slaves and people were fighting for their personal freedom and rights, and that was not being given to them. This violence was used to fight and get a point across, this was the cause and methods of their revolution.
In conclusion, some may ask, “Was the Haitian Revolution successful?” And you could answer, “Yes”. It made a significant impact on life in Haiti and made a revolutionary change for the whole country. In the end they won independence from France, becoming the first country founded by slaves.

I understand the position that saying that you need to vote for the Democrats in 2024 because the Republicans would be EVEN WORSE. and this post isnt even me advocating for any particular action, its an expression of frustration and hopelessness.
but if we are expected to vote for one party over the other every election no matter what, then why would they ever do anything any of us want them to do? if all they need to do is be slightly less openly evil than the other guy, why would they ever do more? The way it looks to me, if all they need to do to secure votes is tell me that if I dont vote for them, the other party is going to have me killed, this has ceased to be a democracy and is now a hostage situation
anyway, the thing that prompted this was I saw a tiktok where a woman was talking about how Bidens approval rating right now is as low as Trumps was when he left office, so if hes the nominee in 2024, he will lose. and AAAALLLL the comments were people yelling at her, accusing her of basically giving the election to the GOP and saying that we all need to vote for biden in 2024 to keep trump out of office etc etc etc. and it's been really bothering me since I saw it, because like... okay, but this woman isn't the one who got Biden to support genocide. She didn't tell people to stop approving of him. She didnt even tell people NOT to vote for him, she just said that people WONT. Why is she a bad person for accurately saying that a lot of people have turned and are turning on biden? Hell, why do people act like The Left have the power to swing every election, but then do absolutely nothing to court our votes, and get angry if we say they should?

Ugh this probably says more abt me and my circles than anything else but like. Its legitimately mood-alteringly disappointing rn trying to talk to or deal w other people. It doesnt matter what issue we're talking abt - democracy at home or abroad, international conflicts, climate change, poverty, capitalism - all anyone wants to do is agree abt how shit it all is and then like hope or root for the end of the world somehow and then like wow look how smart and "real" we're being it cant go on like this etc etc like SHUT UPPPPPP!!!!!! People would really rather just HOPE for things to get immeasurably worse bc they dont want to do the work to think abt solutions or even the fact that there ARE things within our power to improve is somehow idk annoying to hear abt?? I guess??? Every time i try to point it out they act like im naiive or childish somehow, they dismiss me showing up to abortion protests as doing nothing AND when i canvass for county level protections as nothing???? If i bring up water catchment systems as a solution to water insecurity in our area (arizona....lol) "itll never work" "zoning boards would never do anything" its like. I feel so stunted like im TIRED of listening to people give up like this, and i hate being dismissed for pointing out real solutions!!! Actually getting 50 people excited about city elections IS more impactful than posting through it!!!!!!!!!!! I mean, on one level they’re right - these things WON’T happen, at least not if anyone doesn’t do anything. So it becomes a self-fulfilling masturbatory prophecy.
It’s also easier to ignore all the examples of when people showing up does work - when the right candidates get elected and now the right policies and laws can be passed. The right people speak up at the right meetings and the organization makes different, better choices.
The problem is that life isn’t a movie where we can move through a montage of the scenes and work to get to those moments. You have to live and work, and also recognize that success is not guaranteed. Sometimes the other side is better organized, better funded, better positioned. But you keep fighting and working. You look at what’s not helping or benefiting and make changes. You identify the new allies to complement the ones already there. Reach out to the inactive and under approached.
There is so much we can individually do that adds up on a larger scale.

The Roulette wheel has been spun and It landed on a Mon x Hera pairing which kind of pops off especially for the Ahsoka TV setting. Our girlies had a lot of time in the Rebellion yk?
Went to AO3 for some inspiration and landed on Priorities by my mutual @soloorganaas which definitely inspired this piece so go show some love to it on AO3
Her General
“I don't understand what your problem is,” Hera accused, and Mon recoiled at the sound of the door slam.
“You tell me you believe me, yet every time I try to get things done, you stand in my way.”
“Hera, please-”
“No, I know what you're going to say ‘it's not up to me’”, Hera mocked. “But it never is, is it? Tell me why we have a Chancellor, if she is so powerless?”
“I have the power, Hera. Using it is the problem. The republic I have instituted has powerful sanctions in place to keep me from doing things of my own volition. This is what we have fought for, democracy. I can't have my best General following the voices in someones head.”
“It's not voices, you know that. And they could know that too if you cared to explain it to them.”
“What the Jedi do is not my problem, Hera. Believe me, I have tried to make peace with them. I have tried to integrate them into the system. The only one that wants anything to do with me is Leia.”
“Ahsoka has worked with the rebellion for years, Mon. That's not fair. You trusted her once. She was Fulcrum. She was there for me. For the Ghost. She and Ezra and Kanan… they are a part of something bigger than us, Mon, bigger than the republic. If we don't listen to them I'm scared that we will lose them. We've lived in a galaxy without Jedi, Mon. And it took us twenty years to recover from it.”
Mon was trapped between her conviction, her status, politics, and her emotions. The whirlwind never stopped.
Mon. Hera was the only one that still called her that. She'd dropped ‘Senator’ a long time ago. She used ‘Chancellor' maybe twice. She was ‘Mon’ to her.
“You never cared before when I went rogue,” Hera reminded her, “I've always had an unorthodox approach to things, but I get it done, Mon. I got it done. Better than anyone else.”
“That was different,” Mon told her.
“Why? We may operate under the title of a Republic, but we are no different than we were when it was called a rebellion. Same people, the same soldiers. The same ships, missions, planets, galaxy. You're still at the top, and I'm still a General. Nothing has tangibly changed, Mon. So tell me again, why?”
Hera stood nose to nose with Mon now.
Mon couldn't meet her eyes. She didn't want to lie but the truth was worse. It was so much worse.
But it was the only thing she still had.
“Because back then you were doing it for me!” She yelled, refusing to meet Hera's eyes.
She sat on her desk, covering her face with her hands.
Hera just stood there, her eyes burning a hole into Mon's skin. Two death stars, setting the planet of her ablaze.
“Is that what this is about? You're jealous of Ahsoka?”
“No- I mean I don't know. I… I can't protect you anymore, Hera. Not like I used to. Ahsoka is a risk, Hera. She's unpredictable.”
“You've said that about me, too.”
“Exactly.” She whispered. She could feel the anger and frustration emanating off the Twi'lek. “I've seen the way you are together,” Mon explained, “I know how this ends.”
“I dont know why I'm surprised. You tell me to remove my feelings from the situation, yet here you are. Your jealousy is shrouding your decisions Mon. Let me remind you: You told me to go.” Hera shouted “You kicked me out. You told me that we were too complicated. You don't get to change your mind now that it's convenient.”
“I have regretted it every day since.”
“Would you change your decision, if you could?”
Mon closed her eyes, and shook her head.
Hera scoffed, leaning in to look Mon in the eye. Her hand gripped Mon’s jaw, forcing their eye contact.
“I am not your general, Mon. I am a Republic General. You don't get to save me for when it's convenient. You don't get to stop me from saving the Galaxy because you don’t want to lose me.”
“Your all I have left.” Mon whispered, and Hera’s grip relaxed.
“So that's it? If you can't have me, no one can? You'd rather Thrawn blow us all up?”
“Hera, of course not. I just…”
“I've heard enough. I'm going. I'll do the hearing and you can strip me of my honor. At least then I'll be a free woman, right? No more imperial colors. From the ashes of the old empire…” Hera stated, staring her down.
Mon met her eyes for a moment, but it was a losing battle. She waved her white flag by looking to the floor.
“I'll see you on the other side, Mon. At least now you can say there's no one holding you back.”
Hera left the door closing with a quieter noise, but a louder impact.
Mon was once again left alone. Abandoned by someone she loved. Maybe if she was better with words.
Or expressions.
Or being a Chancellor, Hera would've stayed.
Maybe if she wasn't so distracted by the imminent threat of defeat, and how she was secretly drawn to it.
Because deep down she wanted a way out.
She wanted the rebellion back.
Because Hera was wrong. Things had changed. They had changed. Things were easy. It was kill or be killed then. She could work with that. She was a survivor against a predator.
Now, she wasn't sure who the bad guy was.
And it was so much worse.
Sharing with the Republic had grown tiring. At least with the rebellion she could have things.
Things like love.
She just wanted her General back.
Instead she had cost the Republic a damn good one.
From the ashes of the old empire…
Hera hadn't spoken the rest. She didn't need to. Mon was all too familiar with the imperial sympathizer slogan.
We will build a new one.
Perhaps she already had.

I've been rather embarrassingly obvious about where I'm from, both on this blog (which I don't use very much any more) and on my Goodreads account (which I use more frequently). I am not, actually, going to tell you all that information—what would be the fun in that? (please don't actually dox me though)—but, if I remember correctly, you should be able to determine, by a careful reading, not only my country of origin but also the region and even city in which I was born. Where I'm currently living is a bit more closely guarded, for good reason (none of your business), but I've made no secret that it's a Western democracy. Which one? That is off-limits, for privacy reasons. (But also I have no connection to this specific country in particular, so it shouldn't matter.)
Anyway, to the second part of your question: I was very lucky to spend an impressionable part of my childhood in an environment where multiple languages were spoken within the household, and I regularly encountered people of various backgrounds and ethnicities as a child. I was encouraged to learn communication; I started reading independently when I was two. Apart from growing up bilingual, I also studied linguistics pretty extensively as a teenager and young adult.
The "secret" (I guess) is that I'm really only functionally bilingual. I know a lot of pieces of a lot of different languages, which makes me look more impressive than I really am—the difference between most polyglots you'll see online and people like me (i.e., kids who grew up in blended households) is that internet polyglots pretend that having a conversational grasp of a language equals fluency, which it... does not, at all—but yeah, I studied a lot, not just linguistics but also specific languages, and spent a lot of time around people who only spoke languages I didn't know, and didn't know any languages I spoke. How do you communicate in that situation? Well, somebody's gotta learn something. And I like to impress people, so.
Also, and I really can't stress this enough: I studied translation. Translation studies as a field will help more than almost anything in understanding how a language is composed, constructed, and utilised; it will help you quickly pick up on when a translation doesn't fit the original; it will give you a good critical eye for not only what someone is saying but also how they are saying it. It is not an exaggeration to say that my experience in translation studies did more for my ability of rapid language acquisition than anything else except for, probably, the total immersion I got when I went to Belgium and was accosted by German-speaking tourists who thought I was Belgian but they didn't know any language other than German, for example. There are other examples—total immersion, like a baby when it's first learning how to Do Language Properly, is the absolute best way to learn basically anything—but the point stands.
Also also, I read a lot of poetry.
