Ask Answers: January 28th, 2021 (Part 1)

And we’re back with many more ask answers! Thank you for waiting.

Is lizzie/the main character tripping over a rock a random event in barbecue? or does it require certain choices? i picked the same choices in multiple different playthroughs but ended up with three different outcomes (1. nothing happens 2. liz trips 3. i trip)

Yep! It’s completely random. Just a little moment of life you don’t have control over, haha.

wait just double checking you stated that derek would be another romantic interest you can pursue in step 4 right??? im just asking cuz hes my fav character

oh wait and btw i was the one that asked the question about derek being in the step 4 just now, and will you have to pay extra for like a dlc or something bc i play the free version rn and i just wanted to check!!

Yeah, you will eventually be able to romance him, but unfortunately it is a paid DLC. Cove is the only love interest who’s entirely free-to-play. You can follow our social media for when we giveaways for a chance to win a key for it, though.

i know that y’all said the step 3 dlc and step 4 will be released early 2021, is there any update to that? for example, a rough amount of days/weeks until release? no pressure at all, i’m super excited!! <3

The Step 3 DLC will be about in maybe two-two and half months or so. Step 4, we’re not entirely sure. Maybe a few months after the Step 3. We don’t want to give set dates until we’re really close to the release since otherwise we wouldn’t be able to 100% guarantee them.

First off love the game. Second I'm a little confused on how the nsfw dlc is gonna work. Because based on some stuff you've said it sounds like a patreon only thing and others make me think it could be an itch/steam thing after the fact? Would you mind clarifying for me 😅. Also if it's a patreon only thing do you need to become one before it's released?

It’s not going to be on Steam/Itch. The actual game of Our Life is safe for teens with no adult content. Any 18+ stuff we’re releasing is separate bonus content. Right now the only for sure plan is having it available through Patreon. If there’s another hosting site that’s not Steam or Itch that’d be easier for people than Patreon we might consider uploading it there too, but nothing else is set.

If you want the bonus Moment you’d have to join once it’s already out or sometime after the release. Joining now would get you our current rewards, but wouldn’t get you future content that’s coming later.

this is probably an awkward question and i apologize, feel free not to answer, but i just wanted to address the elephant in the room....will step 4 acknowledge covid/2020 world events?? i kind of hope not bc i'd like to just exist in a fictional version of the world where things are happy in this quaint seaside town and the world isn't falling apart, but i'd understand if there are some references to it. just thought i'd ask so i can Prepare if that makes sense

Step 4 isn’t going to include Covid or even reference it. When we set Step 4 in that year we definitely didn’t know there’d be a global pandemic during it. It’s too late to move the timeframe earlier or later, but we’re not going to make Step 4 stressful for anyone because the real world became so much more stressful. The universe of Our Life will just be an even more idealized place than it was before.

hiiiii! i'm really sorry if this is a bother. i was just curious if cove has a canon setting for each step, like is it canon that he stays candid the whole game and is super sporty for instance and the rest are variations? thank you for your time!

None of those settings are canon. They’re all equally valid.

I love the game and Cove so much that I ended up spending most of the holidays playing it. Definitely worth it! Idk if you're taking suggestions/criticisms, but I chose the peach skin tone and seeing it written as "my peach skin" in the game broke immersion for me because I kept thinking it was referring to the fruit instead of my skin color. I think that skin color is most commonly referred to as "fair" but "peachy" or "rosy" would work too if you're looking for a different word

So I accidentally overwrote a save file with a different one, is there any way I can recover that save?

Sadly, there isn’t. Not unless you had a backup of the actual save file files in a separate location you can get. I’m really sorry. You can try using the skip feature to quickly speed through the game and get back to where you were though.

Do you try to maintain the color scheme for the clothing throughout the years in Our Life?

Yes, though in hindsight not as much as I wished I did, haha. It could’ve been a little more cohesive. It was a bit too broad in my opinion.

I noticed that Cliff mentions he wasn’t much older than Cove before finding out he was going to be a father when he finds MC in bed with Cove during Part 3 so doesn’t that Cliff and Kyra were teenage/young parents?

Yeah, Cliff was nineteen and Kyra was eighteen when Cove was born. They were just a couple of kids.

Does Cove have a favourite holiday?

It changes depending on the year. Around Step 1 he’s not a huge fan of a lot of holidays because he’s not together with his whole family for them. But once he’s older and Kyra comes around more, he starts appreciating major family holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas more than other holidays because he knows how it feels not to have that. Though summer vacation is of course his most favorite all the time, if that counts as a “holiday”.

I’m afraid that’d be too big of a spoiler to give away before the epilogue’s release, at least in terms of specifics. Generally you’ll just have to be patient and try not to propose first, haha.

You can be living together with Cove in Step 4! Though you wouldn’t get to see the place itself. That’s up to your imagination.

Is it bad that I'm completely in love with Cove's dad... What I gotta pay to romance Cliff 😭 (I don't mean as Jamie because that would be wack)

That’ll cost one million 20 twenty dollar bills, haha. I’m really glad you like him, though sadly we aren’t able to make a separate game where you can romance Cliff. I wish we had enough time to make tons of new scenes/extra stories in the Our Life world, but it just takes too long. Maybe people will make fanworks about it.

Good Stuff Ultimate: 1st Quarter

2020 has certainly left us already crawling for next year, but I say we shouldn’t leave all the good things behind. Time for a lightning roundup, no holds barred! 3. 2.. 1…

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts

I couldn’t help but describe this as “Baby’s First Fantasy Adventure” like The Dragon Prince. It looks good, colorful, imaginative enough, but nothing about the story or characters pushed me to watch past episode 3 because I’ve no doubt seen stuff like this before but more interesting. It’s a good watch no doubt, but hardly groundbreaking to me. (Grade: C+)

The Owl House

Now this was more my speed. I definitely enjoyed the various designs of monsters and average Boiling Isle citizens far more. Eda immediately became my favorite witch character. While it reminded me a little too much of Gravity Falls, I was honestly hooked for more than just it’s otherwise eye opening demonic aesthetics. (Grade: B+)

Dorohedoro

Now THIS is a post apocalyptic series I’ve been waiting for in a while. Q really put together a world worth checking out, seeing its nooks and crannies, while giving us characters worth exploring with at every angle. She especially does a great job manga-wise where the black and white makes the edgy details pop in a meaningful way. The anime itself is just as good. Brought down by some wonky action scenes and movements, but the blend of 2D and 3D worked better than the Beastars anime. (Grade: A)

Keep Your Hands Off the Eizouken!

Talked about it plenty of times before, but this is that series that just speaks for itself, manga and anime. Smooth pacing, no contrived drama bullshit, hardly leaves any loose ends, easily accessible for anyone. It's the DMC5 of anime, meaning it is the most 'anime' anime I've seen thus far. (Grade: A++)

Duncanville

Surprisingly not a wack family sitcom. The characters are what really sell the comedy, except for Duncan himself who’s not terrible but isn’t great as the star of the show, especially compared to his mom; and it’s weird cuz they share the same VA. Plus it’s actually well animated and stylized compared to the average Family Guy knockoff. It’s worth a check out in my book. (Grade: B)

Thundercats Roar

Oh wow, a nostalgia cartoon reboot that everyone will argue over but at the end of the day, is about as average as it gets. While I can appreciate the animation when it gets dynamic during its action scenes, I came out every episode remembering nothing and moving on. If I wanted a half hour centered around safe memes or forgettable punchlines, I would’ve subscribed to Jimmy Kimmel or ankle-beez by now. (Grade: C)

Harley Quinn series

This was a left fielder for me; the trailer gave a far different impression than expected. I can definitely appreciate how they treated not only Harley’s character, her relationship with Joker vs Ivy, but the rouge gallery of DC villains and heroes. What other DC product got me to love King Shark as much as this? Plus, Harley x Ivy are the OTP, but I appreciate them giving Kite Man some respect. (Grade: A-)

Birds of Prey

I didn’t mind the movie, but it lacked that dry punch that Harley’s series gave me. It was kinda the reason why I’ve seen people say Harley was becoming DC’s Deadpool type. even when Harley was a good star of the film. Didn’t help that Black Canary and Huntress were the only other characters I liked, and I don’t wanna get into the implicating homophobia. I want to say Sionis was great, but he doesn’t work when you have both the villain and protagonist be unhinged. All in all, I’ll give it the same score I gave Deadpool 1. (Grade: C+)

Dolittle (2020)

The movie’s climax was a long dragon fart and I wanted to die. (Grade: D)

Sonic the Hedgehog (2020)

A live action video game movie about an animated character. Let me put it like this: references and fanservice is not substance, taking place in the human populace does not help the escapism, reminding me that Olive Garden sucks ass is not funny, and only being half animated is cock and ball torture. If I don’t care for realism in my video games, this DOESN’T help. It has a couple good moments, but this is mostly unimaginative, by the book, and not worth going back to. Works as a Flash movie, I guess. (Grade: C-)

Sonic Rebuilt

Sincerely the chad Sonic film of this year. Even when it’s a reanimated version of the 90s film, the creativity every artist applies for their respective scene brings better life to the original film like with Shrek Retold. Yeah, there’s live action segments in it, but it’s part of the gag not a crux of the film’s visuals. It isn’t fully original since they use the original’s voice work and music, but everyone involved gave a genuinely good spin on the pretty overlooked feature. Plus it has a Sonic that gets shit done and has the better voice. (Grade: A-)

Ishuzoku Reviewers

Kono anime wa igaito shinsendesu. Bōru o korogashi tsudzukeru hōhō o shitte imashita. Sore wa yoi owarai de, kesshite mumide wa arimasendeshita. Itsumo mitakatta ano etchina shirīzudeshita. (Grade: A-)

Meggy’s Destiny

The plot has its low points, but this is still an entertaining short film. The characters were what kept the ball rolling and the ending was that coup de gras on the main character’s overall story arc. (Grade: B+)

Trolls World Tour

This film works better than the first to me mainly because we can focus on Trolls and their musical world rather than the Bergens who didn’t offer much. The plot is simple, but it being a multi-genre musical kept me hooked. The finale especially was that cherry on top of this bouncy film. Also Poppy is still the best. (Grade: B+)

Glitch Techs

It stands to say Men in Black meets Captain N and Pixels works well as a premise for a show, and this certainly delivered by actually being ANIMATED. I’m sorry, but can corporations soon understand that premises and ideas that work better with animation stop trying to make it live action? Also, it brought Fanboy and Chum Chum back from the dead, and that is a worthwhile achievement. (Grade: A)

Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons

They’re honestly the same game from what I got to play. AC was a little more stressful than Doom, especially with managing my stalks, but they were both nonetheless an all around great time so they get the same score. (Grade: A)

Steven Universe Future

Had some shit episodes, had some delightfully fun episodes, and had a half shit/half delightful finale. Pretty on par for Steven Universe but I say it’s elevated above most of the original series with the grown Steven himself. Much as I wish his character was dealt with better, I was still invested in his story nonetheless even when the fixed perspective honestly fucked over most else in this series. It’s far better than season 5, not as good as seasons 1 & 2. So yeah, I liked it and I’m gonna miss this show. (Grade: B-)

Onward

The ending doesn’t make up for a pretty middle of the road film. If I wanted a film about familiar bonding in a goofy fantasy world, I could’ve just watched A Goofy Movie. The world feels creative enough, but it’s like Pixar has been losing their touch or mostly peaked when it comes to imaginative premises. I’m hoping Soul can bounce ‘em back cuz while this isn’t the worst, certainly didn’t feel like their best. (Grade: C+)

Well that’s all for the first quarter of 2020. Quite above average all around, certainly some worthwhile things to keep your busy while this pandemic is upon us, except Dolittle. Were there any that I missed? Probably. Let’s see where the 2nd quarter provides as we carry on into the Spring months.

Imagine:

Drive in movie date with Erik.

“What showing did you buy tickets for?”

You wait for Erik to find the both of you a good spot closer to the front. He parks the car, pausing his music that he had playing through his Bluetooth.

“Candyman,” he says while showing you the tickets for that, “And...Lost Boys.”

You give him a huge smile, “YESSS! You remembered how much I love Lost Boys.”

“Y/N, your annoying ass practically begged me every damn day about seeing it.” He reminds you with humor.

“Well, you listened to me so that’s all that matters. Promise me something,”

Erik looks at you before opening his car door to grab snacks, “WHAT?”

He knew it was going to be something that would irritate him.

“Can you please not complain while watching it? I don’t wanna hear all that.”

He looked down at you with a mug, “Girl, who you talking to number one, number two AINT nobody tryna disturb your movie. No cap, if it’s wack I’m going the fuck to sleep.”

You groan loudly like a child, “You’re so aggravating.”

Rubbing your temples you open your door to leave only for Erik to stop you with his bark of a voice. He steps out, walking to your side, opening the door himself. You roll your eyes at his dramatics but this was Erik being a gentleman and it was cute and nice of him.

“Thanks, asshole,” you kiss his cheek, “Now lets go so you can buy me some popcorn and candy.”

On your way to the consession stan you swing Erik’s hand in yours, uncaring that he looked down at you like you were crazy. He couldn’t stand when you did this but he never stopped you. The line was pretty decent, moving at a steady pace. The minute it was your turn to order, Erik pulls out his wallet, eyes focused on the menu.

“Can I help you?” A young girl spoke while scratching her weave.

“Yeah, let me get a large popcorn-HOLD UP.”

The young boy behind the girl was already filling the bucket before Erik could finish.

“I want my popcorn layered with butter.”

The teenage boy dumps the fresh popcorn out to give Erik what he wanted.

“I also want some M&Ms, sour patch kids, and one large soda with one straw.”

“Just the one straw?” The girl asks with a strange expression.

Y/N, being the defensive one, decided to reply for Erik.

“YES. One straw. That’s my man, if we can share body fluids then we-“

“Y/N,” Erik spoke low but with warning, “stop tryna scare the girl off like that. She only 16.”

“17.”

“Whatever.” Both Y/N and Erik spoke in unison without a thought.

Huffing, the girl with her claw nails finished ringing in their total, “It’s gonna be $20.89.”

Erik handed over a fresh $20 dollar bill with some change before grabbing his snacks and popcorn. Y/N took the empty cup to fill up. She mixed grape and orange soda together. Finally back at the car, Erik placed the snacks on the roof of the car, walking to his trunk.

“It’s gonna get a little chilly so let me get the blanket out.”

“It’s the fluffy one right? Not that itchy one?” You ask him to clarify.

“The fluffy one, Y/N. I gotchu, baby, don’t trip.”

You open the door, placing the soda in the cup holder. Erik opens his door, tossing the blanket in the back before entering with the popcorn spilling over in one hand and the candy in the other. You help him out by grabbing the popcorn, placing it within your lap. Unable to help yourself you start eating it, humming in satisfaction at the extra buttery flavor.

“Lost Boys starting in like five minutes.”

Throughout the movie you would steal glances at Erik to see his reaction to the 80s cult classic. So far so good, he actually loved everything about it so far from the aesthetic to the music.

“This is real cool, Y/N. I think you just gave a costume idea for tomorrow night,” he playfully pinched your cheek.

“This is gonna go down in history. Finally you like something I choose to watch for once.”

“It’s only cuz I’m rubbing off on you.” He teases. He just had to turn the conversation back to him.

“I know I’m good looking Y/N,” he was referring to your constant staring, “Take a picture babygirl, it’ll last longer.”

“Fuck you, you ain’t even all that,” you point to the screen, “now pay attention.”

The ending fight scene played through and Erik was so into it he was shouting at the screen. He even cringed a little at some of the deaths and that made you laugh. He was so cute, especially when he was the most chill.

Once the movie finished the both of you decided to go for a bathroom break. Sadly you had to wait in a line to get in which pissed you off because most of the chicks weren’t even in there to use the bathroom. They were either fixing their hair, taking selfies, or applying more makeup because they either gave their man some “suckie suckie” or kissed during most of the movie. Once you got to a stall you groan with disgust. You covered the toilet with so many sheets of toilet paper you would think someone needed to help you from how long it took.

Finally out, Erik gave you a “WTF” look, throwing his hands up.

“The movie is about to start what the fuck was you doing?”

“You not about to play with me it was a long line and the bathroom was stinky and messy.”

“You had me out here telling shorties my girl got a sixth sense whenever some chick tries to talk to me and ain’t no stopping her cuz she got hands.”

You look up at him with a sexy smile, “Ooo, you told them bitches back off, huh?”

He shook his head at you, “Duh. You mines, right?”

Candyman started up the second the both of you reached the car. Inside Erik grabs the blanket, stretching it over the both of you while you lean over to rest your head on his shoulder. Candyman was always a fear of your since you were a little girl bout you haven’t seen it in years so you agreed to watch again.

Already you had Erik’s hand in yours, him knowing how afraid you were. He smirks, eyes still on the screen and noticing how jumpy you became during certain scenes.

“Are we gonna have to sleep with the lights on when we get back home, baby girl?”

“Shut up.” You turn away from the gore, “yep, I’m reminded why I don’t like this movie.”

“Whose complaining now? I liked your movie now sit back and enjoy mines.”

“If I leap in your lap DONT get mad.”

Erik half shrugs, “You say it like it’s a problem.”

Things went quiet as the movie continued, your hand squeezing Erik’s from time to time but you watched it all the way through. Once it was over the eerie “The End” in 1920s Hollywood script flashed across the screen in black and white.

“You gotta go pee pee before we leave?” Erik laughs.

“No, we can just go, I’m tired.”

He tossed the blanket in the back seat, turning on his car to leave. Luckily they decided to leave now before the traffic really started up. You ask Erik to play his music on the ride back, curling up in your seat with sleepy eyes.

“Aye, it ain’t your bed time yet. You still gotta do what you promised for me when we get back home.”

You look over at him with sass, “And what’s that?”

“Girl, some pussy, what you think?”

“If I can get that scary ass movie out my head then yeah.”

He throws his head back against his seat with a chuckle, “My fault, baby.”

“Yes, your fault.” You pout, “now I’m gonna have nightmares.”

“Not while I’m around, chump.”

“Next drive in, let’s watch some Romance movies.”

You knew he hated the mushy stuff. Romeo and Juliet was a must see and also Love Jones. You saw the Ad online for those movies at the next drive in.

“I should’ve never told you about this place.” He complains while accelerating down the lane.

(1) since you've been doing some power discussions, i'd like to say that in my opinion phoebe should have had powers that were connected with her mind/'astral' plane. i think that instead of levitation it should have been telepathy. yeah, because we saw her complaining (ever after having fighting skills) that she doesn't have an active power. maybe that's the point? to see her as a grown ass woman who realises that her powers mean very much cuz she feels and understands minds and hearts more

(2) more that her sisters. maybe if we saw her getting an active power only in season 6 (empathic reflection), maybe her development was better? bc i was actually sad to see her as a cold woman in later seasons. also, prue actually looks good with levitation, but her martial arts skills made no sense and looked like she was just trying to show off. piper and paige were fine anyway, but i wanted to see molecular acceleration and orb shield on-screen, so..

personally, i do think telepathy is a tad overdone on tv shows, but i do think developments more regarding the psyche would have fit a lot better. i also think the phrasing of “active power” is very loosely defined as she doesn’t refer to premonition as an active power, but like,,,, it is. she also loses it when she’s stripped of all her active powers in “crimes and witch-demeanors,” so like, yknow, it’s an active power. regarding her in the later season, i really think it is weird that while they keep branding her as “the heart” and saying like “her true power is love” meow meow meow it was really wack how they made her so bitter All The Time. i think her character really gets warped starting with her being cast as the voice of dissent against chris’s conception and the final nail in the coffin is her obsession with getting pregnant :/.

in regards to prue: it’s mentioned offhand that she takes martial arts classes with phoebe a couple times but the fact that that is never shown is both Cowardly and Homophobic. furthermore, you can’t tell us prue was cheer captain just as an example of her being popular and accomplished and then literally never given us an example of her physicality. like hello?? she can throw herself in the air now, she should be doing some cool flips and tricks like babe i’ve still got it!!

and while we’re on the topic piper really should have taken martial arts with her sisters i understand she has a super strong offensive power but she definitely seems like she doesn’t know how to throw a punch properly.

i also think paige didn’t need too many new powers (though i’m not saying they shouldn’t have given them to her like if you can give wyatt an orb sheild you can give paige one) as much as she should have been able to weaponized her own powers more. like hovering? it’s basically the same as levitation she could have used that combatively. photokinesis??? the show never weaponized photokinesis and it kills me like hello you can blind your opponent. concentrate it enough you might even be able to burn them. just because it’s a pacifist power doesn’t mean all of its purposes are benign.

tbh i feel weird because like. vivienne's great, she's got a cool aesthetic and i know she's a very good friend if she genuinely likes you etc etc but at the same time every time she starts talking about sheep and wolves and Ill Bred Apostates(tm) and w/e i just. cringe inward and tbh i blame most of that on bioware cuz like. i feel like vivienne's loyalist politics and concern for her fellow mages couldve looked a Lot better if actually competent people had written it??? idek :/

I don’t know why you would feel weird; this is a totally correct opinion to have about Vivienne!

I don’t know if you’ve followed me long or even follow me at all but I’ve mentioned plenty of times how I don’t agree with Vivienne’s use of respectability politics.

While her writers did her dirty, her concern for her fellow mages is a central part of her character--but people are too busy assigning imaginary traits to her to see that. (It’s especially transparent when these traits are ones who belong to their white faves.)

When I was more active I talked a lot about my feelings about Vivienne and you can read the gist of them HERE (This one is my favorite!) HERE and HERE and HERE.

As for your other ask:

also one of the things that annoys me is that a lot of people seem to either completely loathe vivienne or hold her up as a paragon of virtue that's immune to criticism and Neither Of These Seems Good?? like. idk why but sometimes it seems like people refuse to treat her as an actual person who's got her flaws, missteps and complexities and just laud her as this Flawless Strong Black Lady and that. Bugs me. anyways this is already too long and makes no sense so sorry bout that!!

I ’m sure fans, especially black fans, would be more open to talking about Vivienne’s flaws if white fandom™ wasn’t so insidious with their hatred of her.

When I, for example, make posts about “Madam de Fer being absolutely flawless!” it doesn’t mean I agree with everything she says, it’s typically in response to some freak referring to her as the “anti-Anders” or claiming she accused Lavellan Specifically of having “Lice and Fleas” (because she’s like...racist I guess???) And then forgetting that she isn’t the only character with a disapproval scene.

And these are just my timeless faves. The one I feel okay sharing (though the anti-Anders one still upsets me tbh.)

I would love to go back through my whole blog and find the truly truly truly outrages things (the infamous G@rret H@wke fanfic comes to mind. I only pray you weren’t around for that!) I won’t put myself or anyone else through that.

Basically, I’m confident that everyone who loves Vivienne knows she’s flawed and most likely talk about it with their friends and mutuals. Because the greater fandom is wack and takes things too far.

Is it okay if I read some of the dialogue you've put into your crossover idea. The Camarilla, Anarchs and Sabbat are going to be confused on what's going on.

Oh for sure - I wouldn’t doubt it’d cause quite a bit of chaos tbh!

And sure Anon - just know it’s nothing special - mostly just ideas I had on how I could possibly introduce Magdalene into the mix tbh 😅

I’ll provide a bit of context/commentary, cuz I do literally write *just* dialogue lmao (fair warning: it’s p lengthy):

“What you’re asking me to do is an utmost crime, Sorcerer. I refuse.”

“Even if it means becoming more powerful? Heightening your Clan’s position?”

“I don’t care about that. First and foremost, I’m loyal to the Camarilla, and Diablerie is a capital crime - irreversible.”

“Your kind is already doomed to the Netherrealm. Why bother upholding such a masquerade?”

“Because I don’t see myself as a monster, and I don’t forget where I came from.”

(This is an isolated idea between Magdalene and possibly Shang Tsung, after the latter finds out about the concept of Diablerie - possibly from the Sabbat, but also possibly previous knowledge from the Moroi?)

“If what you’re suggesting is true, then we’ll need to take this to HQ. Can you be present tomorrow morning to meet?”

“That’s not possible. I’m a night person - I only conduct business after sundown.”

(Whispers to the other) “…telling you - vampire.”

“Very well. Tomorrow evening then?”

“Sure. But let’s keep it brief, alright? I can’t stay away for too long.”

(Just a goofy bit where one of the Kombat Kids (as I’ve heard Cassie, Jaqui, Takeda, and Kung Jin referred to), or maybe just another soldier in general, is super convinced she’s a ‘classic’ vampire, but no one else is buying it)

“Woah, woah! There’s not supposed to be civilians here!”

“What are you doing here?”

(Magdalene): “Investigating.” (She glances at their uniforms) “What’re the Special Forces doing in a dump like this?”

“Investigating. You really shouldn’t be here-“

“My superior begs to differ. This matter is of the utmost importance, and he’s sent me to look into it on his behalf. I’m not leaving.”

“Do you know anything about this incident then?”

“…not much. Probably about as much as you do: It’s a strange series of events leading up to this by some unknown and unseen party.”

“I’d call this a bit more than strange.”

“Whatever you call it, it’s a problem - obviously for the both of us. The sooner we find out what happened, the better.”

“You’re going to help us?”

“And you’re going to help me. If we’re after the same answers, why not make this whole situation mutually beneficial?”

“Well, we don’t really know anything about you. Plus, this is SF business, we can’t really release much information. Classified, you know.”

“My name is Magdalene Brandeis. You don’t know me or my superiors, but we’re on the same side for the moment.”

“‘For the moment’?”

“I have no say in their choices. Kinda what happens when you join in at a bad time.”

(i’m not really sure how I wanna write Mags, so she kinda jumps between super formal and more casual here - it’s her encountering the Kombat Kids while investigating an extremely suspicious incident that resulted in a lot of strange deaths in the building/area - definitely Sabbat work. Imo they grow much bolder after the turn of events leading to the news of new realms.)

“Hey Cass, I did some looking into that woman we were with at the scene of that incident, and got something really weird.”

“What do you mean ‘weird’? The whole thing was way outta wack.”

“Yeah but this is… weirder. I did a search on the name she gave and eventually got a match on a Missing Person’s report from over in Santa Monica, but… That Magdalene woman’s been missing for well over a decade now.”

“What? No way… what do you think it means?”

“I don’t know. I don’t know if I should bring it up to General Blade or not regarding the incident. She didn’t seem like she was involved in it at all.”

“She definitely seemed like she didn’t want to be seen there… like she was keeping a low profile. Maybe she was involved?”

“But she gave us that insight on those other incidents that match this one.”

“Probably ‘cause she knows about them. How would we know if she was involved? But it fits the alibi.”

“What do you mean?”

“Think about it Cass - a woman that’s been missing and presumed dead for over ten years, suddenly shows up at the scene of one of the most horrific crimes in recent history, then starts talking about other similar instances we’d missed going back a few years? She’s definitely in on it.”

“But we have no evidence she’s an enemy-“

“And nothing to prove she’s an ally either, besides her word. Can you trust someone like that?”

“…I’m not sure.”

“I say we report it anyway. At worst, it’s a bad hunch, but at best we possibly nab the person responsible - or one of their lackeys, anyway.”

(I wanted a bit that touched on Mags’ prior involvement in VTMB, so this is just a small call-back to that)

“How did you get in here?”

“Through the front door, actually. I have information you might be interested in, General.”

“And why would we trust someone who waltzes into a military facility like they own the damn place?”

“Because if my superiors found out where I was and what I was going to say, I’d be dead ten times over by now.”

“…who’s your superior?”

“Let’s call them a Council, for simplicity’s sake. They keep a tight leash on their kind, but I’m not… exactly a normal case. Now do you want to hear what I have to say or not? I don’t have all night.”

“Why come at night?”

“It’s quiet at night. I prefer it.”

“Hm. So long as it’s relevant, we could use any help we could get.”

“What causes these incidents - these murders - isn’t like you or I, but something much more primal.”

“An animal?”

“A beast with a superiority complex, honestly.”

“And you think we’d believe that?”

“What else have you encountered could do something like that?”

“I could name a few things…”

“I believe it’s the work of the Sabbat.”

“…the what?”

“The Sabbat. I’ve been informed you’ve heard the term before-“

“Yeah, and it’s strictly SF information only. How’d you hear about it?”

“Everyone knows about it, where I come from. They’re a persistent problem that’s grown wildly out of hand, in recent nights. Do you know what the Sabbat are?”

“We deduce they’re a gang going around murdering innocent people with no rhyme or reason as to why they’re doing it.”

“Hmmm… not bad, not bad. But there IS a reason, and the rhyme may be… disturbing to you.”

“If you know what’s causing the murders and taking our attention away from other more stressing concerns, then by law you’re obligated to inform us.”

“The Sabbat, in essence, strive to be everything you are not: Inhuman. They reject the basic code we all as a society follow, for the most part. They’re arrogant, have no regard for life, and see themselves as higher beings than you. The Sabbat are dangerous, and we’ve been trying to keep them in check for years. Ever since we all found out about the other realms after that incident years ago, we’ve been unable to get a handle on them.”

“…so you’re saying you’ve let them get out of hand?”

“No. The Sabbat are like cockroaches - you can’t seem to ever get rid of them entirely. They’ve never been this persistent or problematic since Los Angeles.”

“What happened in Los Angeles?”

“…nothing worth noting, to you.”

“I-“

“All I’m here to do, is inform you that these are not people. They are not reasonable, and they will kill every single person - human or not - that gets in their way.”

“So what are they, exactly, if they’re not human?”

(I’m not sure I really like this idea, but it was involving Magdalene going out of the way to try and p much stop these guys (Special Forces) from just waltzing to their dooms while also investigating the Sabbat instances. I liked the idea of them being aware of the name, but not aware of what they are. I never decided how to finish that up though, hence the dead-end here)

“The fact that we may very well be able to ascertain our own origins is an interesting premise, don’t you think? Poetic, even. We’ve spent so long in the dark, only to realize it was only *this* realm that held us back.”

(I typed this up after Beckett was mentioned in a previous ask - idk if it’s something he would say, but it’s a line of dialogue I kind of like so 🤷‍♀️)

Junior Year In Queens Would Include...

If you don’t understand some references in this part, read the first two parts in the series.

Freshman Year

Sophomore Year

- After the entire summer you had barely seen Peter, partly because you were avoiding him, and partly because when you tried to hang out, he was busy. (Although you knew from Ned that Peter did indeed talk a lot about Evelyn. Oh goody.)

- Plus side: ….

- Actually there isn’t one.

- Ahh, junior year is going to be interesting.

- But at the beginning of school May (you can call her May because you love her and she loves you and she’s like a sister instead on an aunt) invites you over. Obviously you can’t say no, May is just too awesome to say no to.

- You just wanted a quiet night to watch movies and you almost got your wish. Key word: almost. *sigh*

- Authors Note: Guys… just-just take a guess to who was sitting beside Peter when you arrived. *Jazz hands* *Confetti rains down from the sky* It’s EVELYN. Yayyy….

- Peter smiles really wide when he sees you, and so does Evelyn, except her smile is like someone dumped ice cream, candy, chocolate, whipped cream and tons of actual sugar into a blender and force fed it to you. Or in other words, sickeningly sweet to the point where you wanna throw up.

- You kind of stare intently at the screen as Evelyn and Peter do weird couple shit without even being a couple. Ex: Holding hands and thinking no one sees them, Evelyn starts feeding Peter popcorn halfway through the movie? Her hand is on his thigh and you’re kinda beyond the point of nausea and more to the point of fRICKING PROJECTILE VOMITING YOUR DISGUST OUT RIGHT INTO HER PERFECT SLEEK HAIR BECAUSE DAMN IT CAN YOU NOT GROPE MY BEST FRIEND IN FRONT OF ME? THANKS???

- You get up to “get more popcorn” and god damn it you just stay in the kitchen for a while. May walks in (and being the awesome person she is) automatically sees Evelyn and Peter’s gross shit, and you standing there behind the kitchen counter, looking bored and uncomfortable.

- GOD BLESS HER, SHE FIGURES IT OUT. THANK FUCK FOR AUNT MAY.

- Her eyes narrow and your breath catches cuz when May narrows her eyes, everyone in the room is in for a nasty shit show.

- You have to whisper so Peter wouldn’t hear you.

- “May, I’m fine, really. This popcorn is uh… taking a long time to pop?”

- “(Name), I love you, you’re a very smart girl, but you’re a shit lair. The popcorn isn’t even in the microwave.”

- “S-shit?”

- Thank GOD the movie ended, cuz after yelling bye to Peter and May you’re out of there sooo fast.

- Peter keeps asking you and Michelle about what girls like, and every time you and Michelle look at each other and roll your eyes, because damn it Peter how would we know we’re boyish nerds not popular barbie dolls.

- There’s a winter formal coming up and of course Peter wants to go with Evelyn. He asks you about EVERYTHING.

- “Hey, do you think she wants to match? What about the corsage? Should I cut my hair? I heard her say she likes shorter hair.”

- So you finally explode. (Well kind of. It’s still Peter, so you don’t explode, but just go ‘pop’. It’s really hard to be mad at him, and you did your best.)

- “Peter, I am a NERD. I might not even GO. I’ve never spent more than five minutes on my clothes, much less wasted time to make sure they match. Your hair is fine. But if it makes you feel better, I’ll help you get ready.”

- So here you are, helping May get Peter ready for the dance.

- “What are you going to do with my hair?”

- “I have an idea.”

- You make Peter wash his hair and leave it curly.

- “(Name), can you pass the hair gel?”

- Instead, you reach over as Peter is brushing his hair and ruffle it like crazy.

- *Internal screaming because it’s sO FUCKING SOFT AJIANCIWCN*

- “wHAT ARE YOU DOING?”

- “Calm your shit Peter it looks better when it’s messy.”

- After he leaves you go to Michelle’s house and chill with her, as she also chose to skip.

- Peter and Ned keep texting you photos and it’s very annoying.

- After a about forty minutes of almost non stop texting, (most of them texts were pictures of Evelyn and Peter dancing) you calmly took your phone and repeatedly slammed it against the couch cushion. Michelle just snorts.

- “Why don’t you just mute the group chat?”

- “...fUCK OKAY.”

- Fast forward to the last months of the school year, Peter and Evelyn aren’t dating yet but the entire school ships them, and Evelyn finds the BEST ways to hurt you when he’s not looking.

- Sticking her foot out to trip you, snide comments about your clothes, sometimes when you’re talking she’ll “accidentally” act like she wasn’t listening, etc...

- Peter obviously doesn’t hang out with you guys as much. I mean, he’s dating THE most popular girl at school. He tries to talk to you guys, but it doesn’t work out because random girls (and sometimes guys) hit on him, and it’s really awkward.

- “Hi (Name), do you wan’t to watch a movie a-”

- *A random girl asking him for the tenth time, looking ready to pop out of her shirt* “Ohmygoddoyouwannacometomypartytonightbecauseitsgonnabegreat.”

- *You, maybe a tiny bit pissed* “Oh. my. god. can. you. please. stop. trying. to. get. him. to. fuck. you. please. and. thank. you.”

- IN THE LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL. YOU THINK: “Wow, I made it through the year without being made into a complete idiot.”

- THEN DIS BITCH (Evelyn). DESIDES TO TALK BAD. ABOUT MICHELLE. TO HER OTHER FRIENDS.

- NO ONE TALKS BAD ABOUT MICHELLE WITHOUT GETTING THEIR ASS WHOOPED.

- NO ONE. YOU HEAR? NO. ONE.

- After like thirty seconds you’ve had enough, and actually start to yell out of nowhere.

- “What the frick frack diddily dack patty wack snick snack crack pack slack mack quarterback crackerjack backtrack thumbtack did you just say about my best friend you psychotic bitchy fuck.”

- Oh THAT didn’t go well.

- Her tall ass friends surrounded you in seconds, and she was way too close.

- You didn’t mean to, but years of being bullied meant that when someone you don’t like is too close, you punch them.

- She... she ended up with a very bad black eye.

- And Peter just had to show up right then and there. You could have sworn he looked angrier than you ever saw him. He was all over Evelyn, with the “are you okay”s and “what happened”s.

- Her friends blocked them from your view, there was no way out. The only one who got to tell her side of the story... was Evelyn.

- Peter looked at you once. Just once. It was the first time you felt unsafe because of him. Because he looked ready to hurt you. And the fact that he would have hurt you if you stayed there any longer was what stung the most, but you didn’t wait to test that theory.

- You fucking ran out of school and didn’t look back, barely noticing that you were almost run over by cars sprinting across the road.

- Your parents made you go to school the next day. Evelyn’s friends were there, of course. One moment you were in the hallway, then in the girls bathroom, then running again as they chased you off school grounds.

- Delmar’s sandwich shop was where you hid for a good hour, just walking around the isles with a black eye, a bruised jaw and a limp.

- Mr. Delmar finally saw you and (thank all that is holy) didn’t call the school. Your parents were overseas for another business trip and wouldn’t answer either, so he gave you an ice pack and listened to how your week went. (You left out the whole Peter and Evelyn thing.)

- His daughter came out, and was really understanding. She gave you the address to a “really cheap special defense gym”, which was cool.

- You avoided Peter (and basically everyone) until school ended.

- And when it did end... Boy did you run to that self defensive gym faster than a hyperactive kid on white power. (Relax it’s sugar. I think...)

- Turns out it was an abandoned underground boxing gym, gREAT RIGHT?

-That summer was spend by sneaking out of your apartment, mercilessly attacking old punching bags and using the exposed support beams on the roof as an obstacle course at the abandoned gym.

- Whenever you felt like giving up you remembered how helpless you felt in front of Peter of all people, and that made you angry like nothing else could.

- Being Mr. Stark’s assistant and working at his lab also meant you got to use the new Avengers headquarters to tinker with hand made weapons and (probably) illegal chemicals. Mr. Stark would often see the bruises from your training and ask lots of questions.

- “So... you’re not secretly a super villain, right kid?”

- *sigh* “For the last time, no Mr. Stark.”

- One thing was for sure, you would never let anyone hurt you again. See you in senior year, Evelyn.

Some art tips from a big ol’ nerd

I saw that “art tips that aren’t really appropriate tips” post going around so I thought I’d make a list of art tips that generally help me and I would like to pass on to you. Keep in mind that a lot of these are going to be subjective and conditional, so if they don’t work for you then that’s a-okay.

1 - Try new things often

Nothing gets the art mind working like drawing things you’re not used to. I’m not saying you have to always be drawing something that makes you uncomfortable, just on occasion draw something you’re not used to. For instance, say you’re really big into Super Mario, and more often than not will draw the plumbers (specifically Mario and Luigi) and princesses over other characters. Try to change it up on occasion by drawing Wario and Waluigi, who make for interesting subjects with their exaggerated anatomy. How about Bowser or one of the Koopalings? Even Toads with their simplicity are a nice departure from the same-old-same-old.

Of course there are those times when you just wanna doodle out something that you know practically by heart, and that’s fine. Just keep in mind that changing it up every so often will help to keep your skills sharp.

2 - The right tool for the right time

Any medium of visual art (at least, any that doesn’t involve bodily waste or blood imo) is viable for use in the expression of your vision. You can use any tool you want for your art, regardless of what a lot of people seem to think. This applies to both traditional and digital media. “Don’t use crayons, it’ll make your art look like a child drew it!” Bullcrap, I’ve seen some lovely pieces by professionals drawn with crayon. “You shouldn’t use the bucket fill tool, it’s lazy.” Bullcrap, that’s how I get things done so quick. “If I see any of you m-f-ers airbrushing in your work, I’ll kick your ass.” Well, it’s a good thing my ass has so much damn padding, your foot better be warmed up to make good on your threat ‘cuz that’s how I do most of my shading. Regardless, the point is that it’s not about WHAT tools you use in your art, but rather HOW you use them to create what you want people to see.

The only “must” I would throw at you in regards to tools is in regards to traditional painting, and that is in the maintenance and care of your brushes. Always wash your brushes when you’re done, ALWAYS, regardless of what type of paint you’re working with. Acrylic paints turn to plastic once dry, rendering your unwashed brushes completely useless. Oils are a little more forgiving in the “rendering your unwashed brushes completely useless” regard, but will permanently stain your brushes unless washed properly (which I recommend doing with dish soap, it really helps get the paint out of the bristles). Also, for digital artists, learn your keyboard shortcuts. It saves SO much time.

3 - When to use reference

Reference is often crucial to draw something accurately. “No ref” isn’t really the bragging right that most people seem to think it is. I mean, I still use reference with drawing my own characters! You should almost always be using reference, especially when drawing something you don’t draw very often. For example, if your horse drawings always come out looking like they have macaroni for legs, you’ll want to look up reference images of proper horse leg anatomy.

However, sometimes you want your subject to look a bit off. If you’ve ever seen the Adventure Time episode where Finn and Jake are watched overnight by a horse that has some “wacked-out poo brain”, you’ll know that that horse does not look like a normal horse, or even horses and equine animals as normally portrayed in other Adventure Time episodes. There’s a good reason for this, and the fact that this horse looks so strange plays well into its role in that episode. The point being, reference is almost always a good tool to have on hand, though sometimes you want to go off-model for a specific experience.

4 - “I can’t yet”

This is more of a psychological tip than anything to do with actually aiding in art improvement, but I find it works rather well in encouraging one to improve. When people say they “can’t draw” something because it doesn’t look right to them when they do even with reference (as opposed to, say, not being able to draw something because it makes you uncomfortable or there are too many prying eyes over your shoulder all the time), I personally feel that they might be preemptively limiting themselves.

For example, similar to what I mentioned in the reference part, I have confidence issues when it comes to even semi-realistic equine anatomy. However, I never (at least not anymore) say anything along the lines of “I can’t draw horses very well.” I instead say “I can’t draw horses very well yet.” The “yet” is important, it implies to both me and anyone listening that I am working on improving this area of drawing and will someday be able to properly draw horses. Same with any drawing weakness: hands and feet, babies, cars, buildings, trees, what have you. You’re not bad at drawing these things, you’re just not practiced in drawing them. Just because you can’t draw them yet doesn’t mean you will never be able to.

5 - Have confidence.

No art tip can be more handy than believing in yourself. Everyone’s going to have bad art days, where nothing looks like it’s coming out right. Everyone’s going to try to draw pieces that they end up feeling were more than they could handle. This will happen to every artist, guaranteed. But you can’t just give up because you’re having a bad string of art, or because you were a bit overambitious. I forget who said it, but to paraphrase the quote I can only remember the core message of, everyone has 100 bad drawings inside them and you’ve just got to get them out.

Don’t like how that portrait you were working on all day/week/month came out? Reminisce on that kick-ass swirling galaxy, mystical forest, superhero dog, or whatever you did a while back and remember you can do it. A little bit disappointed with your latest piece but see some really good points about it that you like regardless of how you feel about it overall? Good, focus on those bits and think to yourself “hey, that part of the piece is good, it makes the rest of it worthwhile.” You can do it. You have hard work and practice, and those together make talent. That’s all talent is, the results of practicing and working hard.

Motorbike Insurance/Tax/SORN/MOT need help!?

Hi, I recently bought my first motorbike a few month in advance of my 17th birthday, with the intention to ride it once im 17. When i got the bike, it had no MOT or road tax and it was registered as SORN (meaning it was registered as being off the road). So i filled in the registration document, rang up the DVLA and re-registered the vehicle as SORN again. The thing i would like to know is, when it comes to the time of my 17th birthday, in what order do i get each of the things, for example, would i get the MOT before the roadtax and if so how would i get my bike to the MOT centre without having roadtax, and would i still be able to get insured on an untaxed bike with no MOT? So basicly, what order do i get the insurance, MOT and roadtax in? Sorry i hope this made sense i have tried to describe it in the best way possible, thanks for any help.""

My father has homeowners insurance that covers the exterior buildings around his house, like a garden shed/ covered carport. this past weekend, a large snowfall provided too much weight for one building, and it collapsed. inside was a lawn mower and an antique automobile that dad has had since he was my age, and it was damaged by a metal beam. (think hot dog bun). the insurance company is now saying that they will pay for the repair of the building and for a new lawnmower, but not the car itself. it was not fully restored, but it was in fair working condition (meaning the engine works and the auto does move). does exterior building coverage also include everything inside, or does it have a limit? is the insurance company trying to weasel out of paying my father? if so, who should I call? The accident was not at my fault. Had a police report. Contacted both insurance companies. Got a rental car and check ($1500) from other party's insurance company (NJ Skylands) as decided to go through them. Brought the car to body shop and found out NJ Skylands wants to cheat and pay less. So I called my insurance company (State Farm) and reopened the claim to go through them. State Farm took deductible and issued a check for $1788. Body shop wants to get $2788 for repair. Can I still use that check for $1500 to cover the rest of expanses?
