Minor IETYD 3 spoilers

Passing thought as people discuss the morality of the EOD and Zoraxis and if the EOD's just as bad- I don't think they're the same. They're comparable, but there's definitely some major differences in how the EOD and Zoraxis function. Zoraxis is actively malicious where as the EOD seems more... apathetic if anything.

Zoraxis actively goes out of their way to not only harm EOD agents in their way, but also civilians and even their own workers. They do major plots that could kill millions, have products that are unsafe and can cause long term health issues, and of course there's the whole making creative death traps and brutally murdering agents thing. Not to mention Zor is a multi-billionaire who likely got there by exploiting their workers who they lied to like Ollie.

The EOD doesn't go out of their way to harm agents. Nor do they really go out of their way to harm Operatives, Agent Phoenix's only instances where they can harm Operatives are where it's a life or death "you or them" situation. And even then, frequently there's a non-lethal alternative. The major sins I see is that they're generally uncaring about their agents survival rate and are constantly scamming Phoenix out of time off and over work them.

The latter thing honestly just kinda strikes me as shitty management, someone in accounting putting too much money into the alcohol budget and nobody caring enough to fix it because the higher ups benefit from the booze even if it fucks over their field workers, but the former is what I take more issue with in this debate.

Agents die every day, and the EOD generally doesn't seem to be too worried about it, but that doesn't make them horrendously immoral. I view the EOD kind of like a hospital in some ways, maybe this is a bit cruel of me to say, but patients don't always make it. Sometimes they look like they're gonna be fine, suddenly crash, and there was no way to catch it or save them. But if you're a first responder or part of a rapid team, you can't get caught up on every death. You simply can't, it's not viable. Maybe the first two or three upset you, but over time it turns just into the daily grind. If they make it, wonderful! If they're struggling we'll do all we can to save them and help them get through this. But if that patient, that agent dies, it's disheartening, but you can't go through an entire cycle of grief when it happens.

Either the job will be too much and you'll quit, or you'll get faster and faster at coping, and that doesn't make the first responders bad people, it just means that they don't let themselves get to a state of despair when things just don't work out.

I think the EOD's much the same. They'll help the agents, they'll give them all the resources they can, they'll have a handler right there with you to try and help you through it, but sometimes thing just don't work out and an agent dies. The handler likely has a moment of feeling bad then moves on because if they get worked up over every agent either job would be too much and they'd quit, or they've gotten faster at coping. That doesn't make them inherently evil or even morally wrong, it's just a risk in this field. A risk that- if all the required reading is any indicator of- the agents are more than aware of while training.

They're still shitty managers and likely could do a lot more to help their agents, but some things are simply unavoidable.

whenever saomeone says agent phoenix in ietyd 2 I FLIP OUT AND GET SO SO SO SOS OS HAPPY like!!!! in safe and sound!!!! when john juniper (HHHHERURURUEUR JOHN JUNIPER 😈😈) has his monologue and he says like "agent phoenix, back from the dead" i always let out the most silly little giggle. this stuypid game.... i love this stupid game.

i just realised ive been typing ietyd instead of ieytd. thats probably why any posts i make saying i like ieytd get no fellow fans to find them...

ngl I'm very excited to see where the third game of ietyd goes (if we get one).

I had a concept in my mind for my idea of a potential sequel that I'd hopefully write into existence by way of fanfic, but it'd take a lot of time to make it as great as I want it to be.

the concept is as follows (n there's a lot of it) -

agent phoenix is taken by zoraxis agents, who use them as a patient zero for their newest invention: a time machine. the agent realizes their intentions to go back and try their best to fix history, and perhaps even go back to the agent’s birth to nip the problem at the root. they're sent in and become incorrigably stuck jumping across time periods. in hopes to recieve help, the agent does everything in their power to send notes and messages to handler all the way in the future. letters, slight edits in historical paintings, anything that they think could reach the handler before they disappear back-to-the-future style.

an idea I'm open to playing around with is john juniper surviving and (with utmost reluctance from handler) joining the agency. I think it could be possible to have him be able to recognize what's different about certain paintings and works. in my original idea, I was going to have the handler return to the field with new implants, and his supervisor would act again as his handler. I also love the concept of agent phoenix giving out tips that'll assist people in the future in exchange for places to hold onto their letters. (you ever see good omens? yknow how agnes nutter gave prophecies or whatnot to the people with her box so that they'd deliver it at the exact place and time? like that!)

it'd probably switch perspectives every now and again so that the reader could understand the struggle of phoenix attempting to communicate to the future while being constantly thrown back and forth through time (which is jarring, makes em puke the first two times, but they get used to it). they can't even be sure that anything they're doing is reaching handler. I wanna portray that really well. but the reader would also need to see the fruits of phoenix's work by seeing the handler decode their messages all the way in the present.

I suppose phoenix would mostly communicate their situation and whatever they could potentially decipher from the few moments they spent concious within zoraxis's labs, such as location, intention, and details of the machine.

another idea that just came to me while writing this is phoenix becoming a renowned artist and poet, hiding messages in their works for the handler to find in the future. so much to think about! so much to ponder! and a whole lot of research I will probably have to do in order to be semi-historically accurate. hopefully I'll get around to writing this sometime LMAO
