Can we talk about how amazing this promo art is for Spy and the Liar? The artist, Astro Leon-Jhong, did such a magnificent job I would hang this on my wall

Why are there ever levels of I Expect You to Die where you don't get a lighter? Phoenix needs those for their enrichment

I'm really excited to make this. :P
My IEYTD AU fic WIP
Tumblr media
When the EOD intercepts a message that suggests World-Famous actor John Juniper may be a target of Zoraxis, the agency dispatches an agent to keep an eye on him and protect him should the need arise. And who does Handler sign up for the job but the agent who destroyed the Death Engine itself?
The Agent resents this new mission, she's built for espionage, not body guarding. (Not to mention the fact that her charge is "flirty" and full of himself to say the least.) But Juniper's entourage is more than suspicious, and Zoraxis attacks seem to threaten his life everywhere he goes.
That's when she realizes charming, fun-loving Juniper may unknowingly be in the center of a Zoraxis plot for world domination. And when she gets far too.. invested in her job. But in the field, agents aren't supposed to get emotionally attached.
And for good reason…
(Cover art is NOT mine, I made it on this Picrew.)
-----------------------------------------
This AU and fic were heavily inspired by the novel "Close Quarters", a prequel novel to the TV show "Alias".
I thought long and hard about using they/them for Phoenix in order to cater to the biggest audience (leaving Phoenix's gender up to the reader). But I decided to use my She/Her Agent Phoenix for several reasons, one of them being there is a sad lack of Female Agent Phoenix's out there.
I'm really excited to finish the first chapter. :D
(This reminds me, I should probably create a profile post for my Agent Phoenix...)

I redid the cover!!
I like this one much better. It looks more like the game. More simple. Better.

My favorite part of I Expect You To Die 2: The Spy And The Liar Speedruns is like. The final mission.
If you’re fast enough you can disarm the nukes right before John Juniper’s eyes. Then he’s electrocuted and you both fall roughly at the same time.
Ike imagine this plan that is years in the making and while you back talking your boss while hanging onto a catwalk for dead life, you notice the screen go blue and the ai say “nukes disarmed”. You turn to the elevator and see that the agent is already done and is impatiently smoking a cigar, floating one over to you as well.
You get electrocuted by your mask and they immediately take said mask as a souvenir as you fall to your death seconds before they fall to theirs.
Your bodies are never found.

The Spy and the Liar is a Shuake song. Yes, I know I've said it before, but I'm going a lot more in depth here. I've listened to it over and over, and have noticed just how much of the song can relate to Joker and Akechi. I will be explaining my thoughts processes here today.
"From the spotlight
I can see you"
This line works so well, As both the start of the song and their relationship. It's their first meeting, With Joker in the crowd and Akechi up on the stage, and yet Joker still catches his eye.
"Play your cards right
Kill your stage fright
This could be you"
This one might be a bit of a stretch, but this line symbolizes what Joker could have become. He didn't have to help people. He didn't have to become a phantom thief. He had the same powers as Akechi, he could've done the same thing. If he had played his cards right, he could've been up on that stage alongside him.
"If the whole worlds a stage
Let’s set it on fire"
This line I don't really have much for, but I'd love to hear what anyone else has!
"So you be the spy
And I’ll be the liar"
While there is a lot here, I feel it fits a lot better with another line, so I'll save that explanation for then
"From the background
You can hear me"
This is another line I don't have much for.
"Highest billing
Makes a killing
They revere me"
This line helps to represent just what Akechi is doing with with his gift. He's using it for fame, popularity. Something he has over Joker. People know his name, Know who he is. He isn't just some nobody like Joker.
"That beautiful mask you wear
Is all I desire
So you be the spy
And I’ll be the liar"
Here we are. The chorus. Let's start with the first two lines. It helps to represent just what Akechi wants to do. He wants to tear Jokers mask away. He's supposed to be this great detective prince, So why can't he figure out some kid with fake glasses? It infuriates him, He just wants to figure it out. To tear away the mask and see who Joker really is. But in the end, he just can't. Like a spy, Joker seems to always be one step ahead of him. No matter how much Akechi lies, how many masks he wears, Joker seems to see right through him.
"Face to face to face again
And through the camera lens we ascend"
Another line I don't have much for.
"You’re a minor part
I’m the major star
Ha!
The credits arе more than just the end"
This one is a bit obvious. It's a bit more on how Joker is basically nothing compared to him. Jokers but a mere stepping stone in Akechis path, at least in his eyes. As well as he's telling Joker to not call things too early. Like Okumura for example. They thought they were done, the credits rolled... But Akechi got the last laugh.
"‘Causе the truth is
I despise you
I will tear apart
All these works of art
That disguise you"
Here it is. The big reveal. He hates Joker. He wants to tear off their mask. To see who they really are. To destroy the person who has been ahead of them time and time again.
"I’m makin’ the final cut
It’s down to the wire"
Another line I don't have much for. This is the last of those though.
"So you’ll be the spy
And I’ll be the liar
And I’ll be the liar
And I’ll be the liar
And I'll be the liar!"
The final line. The chorus one final time. And the repetition. We've already been over Joker being the spy. But Akechi. He's confessed everything. His hatred. His rage. How he truly feels. And yet, He's still lying. All he really wants is one final game of chess.
There it is! That's everything! This is the first time I've done anything like this, so if it's bad, that's completely understandable! I hope at least one person ends up enjoying my take on this though!

The ending of The Spy and the Liar goes needlessly hard, like it's dramatic and emotional and it left an impression on me. The way you have to slowly sacrifice yourself to achieve the mission is so cool

Largely throughout the fandom I’ve seen three different interpretations of Agent Phoenix:
the brilliant super spy that knows what they’re doing
the chaotic super spy that survives through sheer dumb luck and fire
the super spy that is blessed/cursed to remember every single death and redo it (a bit like the player).
I’ve been wondering which version people like more. Fortunately tumblr gave me polls this week!

Review:
That's Right! I am already back with the EOD and I'm cleaning up Zoraxis Scum.
And Well...
The First Installment of I Expect You To Die lives forever on a pedestal. I still gush over the game and the story. Even after beating the game - I still go back and play around to unearth little nuggets that I missed.
When it came to the sequel... I personally felt a little let down but it's still... The Game is Pizza - Yep, It's Pizza, ya know - even though it's kinda bad its still kinda good.
Things I Liked:
The Storyline. For the Main Character and the Villain
There were some very cool game mechanics. I would love to mention them but I also don't want to spoil anything.
The Art Style and Time Period/Setting
Things I Didn't Like:
This being a stationary game - not just you the player, but your in-game character is stationary as well - I thought it was difficult to see items and objects which where meant to be interacted with - they felt oddly far away. I constantly caught myself squinting inside my VR headset and saying... "Is that something?"
I also didnt care for the dark backgrounds/lighting - I understand it provides ambiance, but again made things difficult to find. Most of delays in solving were based on me literally not being able to see something.
I also felt during certain puzzles a lot of problem solving heavily relied on the narrator's directions - listening for step-by-step instructions - rather than figuring out the sequences yourself based on clues and your own logical reasoning.
Some parts got to be really long winded especially when it came to the "subcontracted" voice acting.
Some other odd things to note - I was hyper aware of how many times I died/failed a mission this go around - and truthfully - it really wasn't all that much compared to the first game - maybe 2-3 times tops per level - about 12-15 per the whole game. This sounds like a good thing, right? Actually - it took some of fun out of the game. I found myself hoping I would just die so I could discover something - I was averaging 18 mins on level completions.
Alas, even though my Cons outnumber my Pros - I just love the concept of this game and I still look forward to playing the 3rd Installment.
