i feel like part of the reason i've kinda fell off my eqg soapbox is bc i felt like i've said all i've ever wanted to say abt them, but i don't think i have actually! if you do not mind me repeating myself occasionally:
between flashspruce, flash has the most experience with boys despite having realised his attraction to them later than timber did. this is mainly because flash is surrounded by more boys because high school, the maths is pretty simple
timber, on the other hand, had a more complicated relationship with sexuality because his gender was doing all sorts of funny things. he had an idea that he was pan (of course, he didn't have the words for it yet) but he was never sure if he was romantically interested in boys or just admired them so obsessively he wanted to be one. as timber grew into his teen years he realised it was both lol
timber hides this with his confidence but flash can see right through it because he's dealt with boys like this before when they've hit on him previously (though they're never quite as cute as timber is. pretty privilege i tell ya)
when they're friends, they have this specific dynamic that idk how to explain (the closest i can think of is hyung-dongsaeng in korean culture), but essentially it's this feeling of wanting to dote on your friends that are younger than you (even if it's just by months). that's how flash treats timber in the early stages – flash finds out he's older than timber by a few months and now he cannot think outside of timber = baby
timber loves the mane 7 but if flash is tagging along with their hangouts (which is usually the case, timber only rarely hangs out with them as a group by himself), he's very clingy and has his arm hooked with flash's. flash finds it adorable, especially when timber refuses to let go in public
i see 2 ways in which they can go from friends to lovers; either it's very natural and it doesn't feel like anything's changed, OR they've reached a breaking point where they're just seconds away from devouring each other. sunset says that sometimes flash looks at timber like he will leave bite marks on the guy if he doesn't stop whatever he's doing (existing). both are good i'd say
timber has always filmed little candids of flash when they start being friends, mainly on his phone but whenever they're out by themselves, he brings his fancy camera out. flash doesn't know this, mainly because timber doesn't show him out of embarrassment, but you can really tell the person who filmed the videos loves their muse
flash sends over lyric docs whenever he feels like it and usually these are without any context, literally no "hello" or "how are you", just [text].doc and timber's like ???. but then timber reads them and is like sad™. timber's never admitted to this, and it'll take him a while to do so, but there have been certain lines in flash's lyrics that had him crying. how many chances do you get in life where your muse considers you their muse too?
flash sometimes buys timber books that he's read just so timber can also read them and then freak out the same way he did. most of the time timber's reaction is "why would you make me read this i am now clinically insane" which was exactly flash's goal
i would try to debate who would be the pathetic lover between flashspruce but there is no answer to that bc they are both equally pathetic in their own ways sorry loverboys
flash actively joins timber when he goes to get more wood just so he can see timber in a tanktop and an axe but flash will deny this every step of the way
timber can't say anything though bc man does this as well during the summer months when the flash drive are performing at bars; flash is Not about to wear leather in this weather and timber's gonna enjoy every moment of it
and yeah flash teaches timber the guitar bc what is he if not a lover of music and queer rockstars (he thinks timber could make a really cool queer rockstar if not for the fact he would steal a million of girls' hearts in one second and a smile)

look the zoom format just absolutely kills this season :( i love literally everything else about it but all of the players are so BIG in a way that the format struggles to capture. honestly it was a hard watch for me but i'd love to see it revisited in the dome.
17. shriek week
look i'm all for a vibes only no plot session but a vibes only no plot season? i truly could not tell you a single thing that happened in this show. also not enough hot monsters and too many hot people who are vaguely monster adjacent. absolutely HILARIOUS tho, watch it for sure but just turn your brain off. ally fermentation jokes my beloved.

Okay, so I'm replaying some other PB book and Cas came back to clobber me with thoughts on them, sooo ✌️😐 I have some opinions on what people expressed abt ID and Harlow. Not personal, that's why I am not using the reblog button- I just want to give my two cents (also seeing ppl, in my eyes, misinterpreting one of my fixations hurts physically, but that's u n r e l a t e d)
S O:
1. I saw some ppl expressing negative feelings towards the ID book ending- specifically the turning. And I don't know if I am fully on board with disliking it myself.
I do get that it being non con might be a no-go to many. But idk.
I am most likely biased, as someone who has been dreaming about being "anyone, but myself" tbh. But more importantly: the MC was about to greet the Grim Reaper. And then you have two, still very young and impulsive vampires, with someone who literally gave them hope and a reason to live basically, looking at them about to die. So they made the choice they both thought (and which honestly WAS) the only way for MC to see another day. I get why it might bother others, I just think there's more below the surface.
2. Cas killing that girl in the first chapter and their feelings around all of this. I hadn't been sure how to feel about it, but I gave it some thought. Take it as a headcannon or just a theory, since barely anything is relieved about their past, as of now.
So, I gathered what I know:
Cas hated their life before turning. To the point of losing hope for the future, not caring about themselves, not seeing much point in life pretty much (until MC showed up).
They claim that vampires are their genuine family. They highlight how they care for each other "more than most biological families would".
The above is important while mentioning that they felt weak and alone before as well, until turning and MC moving in.
All of that painted me an important picture (but again, it's just my theory) that perhaps, Cas didn't really have actual friends, but even more, I think when you look closely, it seems that their biological family failed them as well...
When the MC expressed their feelings, simply saying "thank you for being a part of my life" and we see Cas crying while stating that no one else told them that before.
When they cling onto the Venandi coven almost no matter what, because Venandi is their family, real family. Yet, unlike Gabe, they never mention their human family. It's never "I was alone, maybe except my parents" or "despite having a home, not having friends sucked". It is "I was alone. I was weak. I had no one."
So I think, considering the above, it adds to Cas' character that their vampire family that gave them security, friends, home and safety means so much that they would do anything for them. They have known them for decades if I remember correctly, but Cas is still impulsive and, imo, drunk off of not being weak. Being able to get rid of anything and anyone that endangers them and those close.
Because maybe, after finally feeling like others want them, like they finally belong somewhere, they are willing to spill the blood. Because they went through so much misery that the only way you can get their family is out of Harlow's cold, dead hands.
Also I think their hatered for humans comes more from hatered for their past self. That whenever they see any human, they only see themselves that they hoped to burrow (from that convo outside the hospital with "how about we don't talk? It makes it hard to forget" deal). That weak and pathetic human Cas Harlow that wasn't able to fight for themselves, wasn't able to get any friends, that felt like such a failure that no one around them could muster this "thank you for existing" type of sentence that made them cry at the school lab.
All of this would add to the fact that being a vampire meant getting out of that pit of despair they seemed to be in. As they stated a time or two, being a vampire means being alive. Being turned is being born again.
It meant killing human Harlow- human disappointed by other humans, by themselves, by the world, with a clear mental baggage to match-and welcoming vampire Harlow.
A vampire that will do anything it takes to, this time, preserve everything that gives them even an ounce of happiness.

i loved reading ur music commentary under the tag game !! (hehe. i tag u rlly often cuz. i hav this secret inner mechanism where if a mutual tags me in anything *once* ill tag that mutual in literally everything if i remember/if prompted. tis how i roll)
tho fr ur segment abt 20 min prog rock songs was so damn accurate. it rlly reminded me of pink floyd's "dogs", king crimson's "lizard" (not the album itself but moreso the sort of. i guess mashup shit they do. another prime example of this is moonchild (including the dream and the illusion), or the devil's triangle. which is honestly more nervewracking rather than boring i guess. JDEVGAVEAHDHGEAVHGAEVDGEVDG. hell ost i guess. w lizard ive listened to it so many times and while it does hav a multitude of lyrics DAMN those 23 minutes are painstakingly longgg ! i guess im a lil biased cuz u know ive played it too often. tho it does hav some v beautiful parts... !
i think a prime example of what u hav mentioned abt prog rock was w king crimson's one red nightmare. it has a cool part and then its jus. Instrumentals after and it gets kind of boring. at least the drums r p damn good!!
or u know to some of comus's songs (which isnt prog rock but its prog folk. same damn thing where the songs are INSANELY long and can sometimes b rlly boring in certain portions), some prime examples being their song the herald (only 12min long. but mannn sometimes w prog rock or prog folk they make 10+ min songs feel like HOURS. but its also v mesmerizing!! or drip drip which. holy hell is an AMAZING song but theres this one part thats insanely fucking boringgg YAWN. its a nice break before the very chilling lyrics nearing the end but. come on now!)

(exaggerating but its quite diff from what *ive* heard. like hollyyy hell they set the mood down so so so so so well)

I agree that progressive rock is a very alluring and simultaneously often frustrating genre as someone who tends to be a fan of it. I consider it the musical equivalent of a sit-down meal; it requires a lot of patience and is best for when you have the time to just appreciate and drift off to it.
Progressive rock is usually lengthy, often slow, very experimental, and tends to utilize a lot of improvisation; as a result, you end up with a lot of songs with pieces that work extremely well, but you do often have to sit through a lot of parts that you just don't care for. Having music be a test of patience is understandably just not for everybody.
I find that my favorite progressive rock songs transform into feeling more like journeys rather than typical musical experiences. I consider Echoes by Pink Floyd to be my favorite prog rock song (and one of my favorite songs in general) for this reason. I end up enjoying the long middle portion entirely made of odd, unnerving, very non-"musical" sounds, because the entire song feels like you are trekking through something strange and unknown.
The slow transition with the buildup of the main tune's return at the very end of the middle portion feels almost like a phoenix rising from the ashes, or the reward at the end of a long journey- I hope that doesn't sound cheesy, lol. I enjoy sometimes playing Echoes at nighttime while I'm lying in bed, and I believe that is the absolute best time to play it. It ends up being a very moving experience for me and it really highlights the great potentials of progressive rock.
Thank you for the recommendations- I'm planning to listen to everything, anyway, but I'm sure any of my followers looking for music recs will appreciate it. King Crimson gets a lot of praise from music enthusiasts, but it doesn't seem as well-known among the mainstream as other progressive rock like Pink Floyd, for example.

And youre right, true love is like equal balance, its not one person being obsessed, its not both people not caring. Its equal. soulmate aus are different, they are based on the idealised notion/ belief that there is someone out there who is fated to be with us. it's supposed to be an au for a reason so it's totally normal to write about it but not believe that true romantic love really exists.
of course, i totally agree with you that someone could find a really good person and then cheat. that's not right at all. in those cases, to me, it's that the cheater was taking their s/o for granted.
romantic love as a whole is just very very complicated. there are too many nuances and specificities in every single relationship's dynamics. i think it's totally normal and it's completely okay to not believe in romantic love. it's okay to question something which is romanticised (no pun intended) because of how reality plays out. it's normal to become disillusioned with what we've seen as we grow up. what is considered ideal or the perfect, true romantic love in our minds or even what is sold to us as true romantic love in tv shows, books etc., does not translate to reality, and that's just life? that said, personally, i still believe in the concept of love because there are so many different forms. familial love, self-love, platonic love etc. romantic love, i still hope to be able to have that one day, but for now, i think it's just a dream or delusion i tell myself...

tolkien: tough one. honestly, i feel like due to the nature of the fandom most people have defensible readings of most characters, even if they're not my own? to the extent tht people get characters wrong it's mostly by not thinking abt them very much! I'm inclined to pick Galadriel, though, bc she's also in LotR and so you get LotR fans thinking they can speak to first or second age galadriel, and then u get silm fans overcorrecting and ignoring third age galadriel entirely, and ofc there's the various Sexist Archetypes she gets shoved into by virtue of Being A Woman. actually a Lot of the women in tolkien are characters ppl get wrong a lot. elwing! míriel! indis! idril! lúthien! niënor! haleth! And So On Forever And Ever. this is again mostly due to Simply Not Thinking About Them Very Much tho
wktd: tbh the fandom gets the wktd girls pretty solidly. no real notes here. benefits from being a small fandom for a game with Three characters all of whose issues are pretty spelled out for you & constitute the central plot.
glowfic: im gonna be honest i do not feel confident to speak for other ppl's characters and state what ppl get right/wrong..! like idk man maybe im the one getting them wrong. ppl mostly dont like... write fic or make headcanons for each others glowfic in a way where the author isnt involved in having opinions about it? so if someone was mischaracterizing a glowfic character idk how i would know rly
hannibal: all of them @_@ no one understands this show like i do and it's a perpetual frustration... im gonna throw out abigail as my answer tho bc she sooooo often gets reduced to like, part of the murder family, which ignores soooooo much of her storyline and how much she did not (uncomplicatedly) want that. her relationship with will is So So Complicated but ultimately she likes freddie more than she likes will in some ways! and at least back when i was in the fandom ... ppl dont get that or just treat it as like, a flaw or misunderstanding to be corrected.
tma: ooooo this is a tough one. honestly the fandom was big enough that it's hard for me to say No One in the fandom got characters & in a lot of cases there was the question of like, does the fandom not understand X or do i just not seek out very many fics abt X... e.g. i havent read any tma fic that got georgie very well but also i havent read any georgie-centric tma fic! kind of a skill issue on My part rly!
mcelroy + polygon content: oh this is a trip down memory lane. everyone writes taako very few people write taako well. i'm not a taako fan and instead had Cares About Less Popular Characters disease but i did feel for taako enjoyers for this. i didnt really read polygon rpf so i can't speak to that side of things.
poetry and short stories: i don't think there are rly characters Everyone In The Fandom gets wrong for this tbh. like thats just not rly a coherent thing
the untamed/mdzs: SONG LAN...... i am not even a big song lan fan im a xuexiao stan first and foremost. but good lord. man has like 2 character traits and the ppl writing fic for him cant even remember those! also lwj but with the disclaimer that i have a very specific read of novel!lwj that just doesnt rly apply to untamed!lwj. which most people are writing for. i guess this is also true of song lan but i have more of a sense of "if you care a lot about song lan you should do your due diligence in hunting for scraps of characterization" whereas caring about untamed!lwj and not reading the book is like. yeah okay fair enough. to me.
tgcf: ooooh. hard one. my immediate instinct is mu qing bc i follow the tag and have to read way too much mu qing slander but i have in fact read good mu qing fic.... might stand by that anyway tho. the tgcf tag is like 50% mu qing slander by volume and it makes me sad. mu qing get behind me bby i'll protect u ;-;
dream SMP: hahaha. ha. what character DOESN'T dsmp fandom get wrong. it gets tommy wrong it gets techno wrong it gets phil wrong it gets puffy and niki and hannah wrong it gets dream wrong it gets purpled wrong it gets quackity wrong it gets sam wrong it gets schlatt wrong it gets karl wrong it gets george wrong it gets wilbur wrong it gets LITERALLY EVERYONE wrong. constantly. the only times it doesn't get someone wrong is when it's forgotten that they exist at all (this is about the eggpire but it's also about eryn and fundy and jack manifold and i'm sure many many others i'm not currently remembering). im giving the prize for Getting It Wrong to phil, though. i don't even LIKE phil. but everyone who writes him gets him wrong. they are just writing Generic Bad Dad or Generic Good Dad. he's got traits! i promise!
ok actually since this one's my current special interest i'll go a bit more in depth. tommy's rude & annoying & a fighter, he very very rarely has the sort of fawn response ppl write. techno is funny but he's got emotions and he is usually acting based on those emotions; if you're writing him in s1 he's less based than you think and if you're writing him in s3 he's more based than you think. phil has traits other than being a dad and also if you can't accurately identify which characters he is and is not a dad to then you don't get to write him. puffy, niki, and hannah all have traits other than being women; no, "therapist", "girlboss", and "mom friend" don't count. purpled is not particularly a Manipulated Minor TM, he's an amoral mercenary, he's kinda fucked up by isolation but he's more like punz than he is like tommy or tubbo. none of quackity, sam, and dream are one-dimensional characters whose only trait is Sadistic Abuser but also if you write them without acknowledging that they're sadistic abusers (with the exception of writing about early dsmp/before The Horrors) then you're doing it wrong. same goes for schlatt but with the addition of "he should not under literally any circumstances talk like he's got a tumblr". karl's more of a bitch than that. so's george. wilbur is more of an asshole and less of a creep than that. i could go on literally forever the dsmp fandom gets every single character wrong & it is my burden to be right about all of them u_u

skts online dating ft. demi!kiyoomi
Kiyoomi has always found dating hard, much more so when the pandemic hit and everyone had to switch online.
Before the lockdown, Kiyoomi had been going out on blind dates set up by friends or Motoya.
He's been struggling with all the flirting and the subtle touches and the prolonged eye contact. He doesn't get it, if he's being honest.
Motoya insists he try online dating. It'll be good practice, he said. Talking to people while being in the comfort of your own home sounded like the perfect solution to Kiyoomi. He liked the fact that he could see a picture and some basic information unlike in a blind date. He liked that he could choose who to talk to, choose whether he wants to make the first move or not.
In theory, online dating should suit him.
But after the 55th match, Kiyoomi still hasn't found someone that gets past the 3rd day talking stage.
He calls it "The 3-Day Curse". After three days of talking, either Kiyoomi gets bored or the other person ghosts him. Eitherway, none of his matches lasted more than 3 days.
He's honestly getting tired of it and he was about to quit and uninstall the dating app when he came across Miya Atsumu's profile.
He doesn't know why. Normally, Kiyoomi swipes left on people who have thirst traps for pictures. Maybe it's because Atsumu's bio is of a quote from a book Kiyoomi had found interesting. Or maybe it was because it was way oast midnight and Kiyoomi's judgement was skewered.
But he felt compelled to swipe right.
He immediately finds that they matched and Kiyoomi doesn't know what to feel.
He doesn't initiate conversation though. Just leave it alone and go to sleep.
t's only until the next morning that Kiyoomi sees Atsumu's message.
Atsumu: i knew it
i knew you wanted me, omi-omi
abt time you finally became honest with yer feelings.
He didn't know what else he expected from Miya. The familiarity made Kiyoomi relax.
Kiyoomi: don't think too much into it, Miya
it was simply a misclick
Atsumu: i doubt that
Kiyoomi: believe whatever you want
It's weird, Kiyoomi thinks. They've been teammates for almost 2 years now but they never really texted much since they always see each other in practice.
Atsumu's as talkative as he is in person, which Kiyoomi finds grateful as he's not a good conversation driver.
One of the many reasons online dating seem to be not working for him.
Atsumu: say, omi-kun i never thought I'd see u on a dating app
Kiyoomi: neither did i
Atsumu: are u rly looking to date or are u just bored bc of the pandemic?
Kiyoomi: is that the new pickup line?
Atsumu: ur funny omi

Atsumu tells him about his few choice of opening liners; He tells Kiyoomi how to spot red flags in a profile; He teaches Kiyoomi how to liven up a conversation, how to choose the right topic, and a lot of other things.
It's pretty insightful, if Kiyoomi says so himself.
They talk for two days straight just going over Atsumu's "online dating techniques".
In turn, Kiyoomi tells him about his dating experience so far both online and offline. They share worst date stories, most embarrassing date stories, most weird ones, and ever in between.
On the night before the third day, Kiyoomi tells Atsumu about his "3-Day Curse".
Kiyoomi: I can't believe you'll be the first one to break it
Atsumu: aww does that mean im special omi?
Kiyoomi: keep on dreaming, miya
Kiyoomi doesn't think much of it when the two of them are still talking nonstop during the third consecutive day. It doesn't mean anything, he reasons. They already know each other so technically they've been talking for more than 3 days already. It doesn't count.
With his newfound knowledge about the ins and outs of dating and flirting, Kiyoomi starts to try it on other people.
He tells Atsumu how things go, whether his tips worked. Atsumu teases him sometimes because "look at ya omi-omi being such a flirt im swooning"
Kiyoomi ignores him. But he follows more of Miya's advice.
Some are more successful than others. A few people make it pass the 3-day curse but Kiyoomi sooner or later loses interest and ghosts them himself.
He suddenly feels like there's something wrong with him.
Kiyoomi: i just can't understand why nobody's clicking
Atsumu: dont feel too pressured omi-kun
im sure you'll find someone soon!!!
Kiyoomi: i dont think i will
Atsumu: u will!!!!

Kiyoomi: now that's too much to ask
Atsumu: mean!
After a month of trying and failing, Kiyoomi gives up. He tells Atsumu that he's planning to uninstall the dating app permanently so they probably switch to a different messaging app.
They continue talking. This time, not about dating. They talk about everything and anything.
Despite the self-isolation and the social distancing, Kiyoomi didn't feel alone when talking to Atsumu. It's something he's never experienced before — feeling close to someone who is physically far away.
Sure, they live in the same city but they can't see each other. Not yet.
But that's okay. Kiyoomi is happy with just talking.
After a few months, they start doing video calls and watching movies or volleyball matches together while being on call. They do this sometimes with the team but it's different when it's just the two of them.
Kiyoomi likes it better when it's just the two of them.
When lockdown was lifted and restrictions started easing up, volleyball practice started up again with certain health protocols that Kiyoomi was more than happy to follow.
Seeing Atsumu for the first time in months brings a weird feeling in Kiyoomi's stomach that he can't quite explain.
Atsumu smiles at him the moment their eyes meet and Kiyoomi's stomach's flip.
Oh.
Oh no.
He likes Miya Atsumu.
He's not sure what changed but
Kiyoomi reinstalls the dating app he had deleted long ago and desperately tries to find Atsumu's profile.
Once he finds it, he immediately swipes right. No hesitation, no overthinking. No blaming it on sleep deprivation.
They match.
Atsumu messages him first.
Atsumu: fancy seeing u here again, omi-omi
Kiyoomi remembers Atsumu's online dating tips: "once you've talked to each other enough to get to know them, tell them directly if you like them and the next step asking them out on a date (i know we're in lockdown so we can't go out on a date but virtual dates are in right now, omi-omi u should def try it)"
Kiyoomi: i like you
would you like to go on a date with me?
Atsumu: ohohoho?
what's this?
Kiyoomi: you can say no if you want to
Atsumu: and what if i dont want to?

len my dear friend do u have a like list in ur mind of like wild west media that u think showcase what u love abt the genre(westerns?? cowboy stuff??)

i'd LOVE your jidaigeki recs, and i have lots of western recs, tysm for asking! i was raised on westerns, and though i have PLENTY of issues with the genre overall and how it was used to enforce an ahistorical ideal of white heteronormative patriarchy on an era that was actually pretty queer in compairison to the rest of the western world at the time and had a significant number of people of color and strong women in it, i still love the genre despite all of its faults.
the first western that comes to mind is true grit, the original true grit. i hate john wayne personally, but even i have to admit he does a good job in this film, though the real show-stealer is the actress who plays mattie ross. the new true grit is also really really good and more accurate to the book, which is okay and i only read for school.
the next of the classics that i wanna mention is the dollars trilogy (a fistful of dollars, for a few dollars more, and the good the bad and the ugly), of which i've only seen the good the bad and the ugly in full and remember liking as a child. the first in the trilogy, fistful, is a remake (or a ripoff, depending on how you look at it) of yojimbo! so, if you liked the basic plot of that, you'll probably like fistful as well if you don't mind clint eastwood. also, even if you don't like the films, do yourself a favor and listen to the soundtrack of at LEAST the good the bad and the ugly. i love it so much i have it on vinyl lol!
another classic western that is a remake/ripoff of a samurai film is the magnificent seven, which is inspired by seven samurai. i've honestly only seen the shitty chris pratt remake, so i can't speak to the quality of the original, though i've heard it's good.
onto modern westerns! tombstone is the first one to come to mind bc of how popular it is. it isn't my favorite bc of how it mythologizes a kind of shitty person, wyatt earp, into this larger than life figure. same goes for doc holliday (though i admit i'm only human and i ADORE val kilmer's performance in this film). if you're at all interested in unraveling the wyatt earp myth, i highly, HIGHLY recommend picking up the wonderful biography wyatt earp: a vigilante life by andrew c isenberg! it really cuts through the bullshit and the many lies the man told about his life and got early hollywood to buy into.
another modern western i like is django: unchained. it's been a few years since i last watched it, but i really want to stress to y'all that this is both a tarantino movie, so expect gore, and a movie about slavery, so expect blatant racism. if either of these things are a trigger or exhaust you, steer clear.
idk if this is classified as a western bc it's set during the era of fur trapping and mountain men, so a little earlier than most westerns, but the revenant was a good and gritty revenge story. though it was also pretty gory, so avoid it if that bothers you
one i really enjoyed was the harder they fall, though warning for gore again, though not to the extent of tarantino or anything. it was wonderfully told and it was SO cool to see a black-led western. i know there was some controversy around colorism and the handling of a queer character which i don't feel is my place to comment on, but i do think the film was good despite its flaws.
this isn't a movie, but i cannot stress enough how much red dead redemption 2 is a good example of western storytelling. arthur morgan's journey in the waning years of the wild west is SO compelling to me, and though it isn't flawless it's imho the closest thing on this list to my perfect western story. 10/10 recommend playing this one!
that's everything that's currently out that i can think of, but a western show i'm looking forwards to is the new bass reeves show that the yellowstone creators are making. yellowstone bored me to tears and i heard 1883 was bad, but i have high hopes for this bc bass reeves was a certified badass, likely inspired the lone ranger, and honestly deserved all the hype wyatt earp got for being a good lawman. so hopefully that will be good!
oh, and i'm sure you're aware, but there's a lot of bad westerns out there bc they pumped them out like crazy back in the day. modern day less so, so i can point to specific ones that suck major ass, like the ballad of buster scruggs, hostiles, and dances with wolves, but just as a rule of thumb if you aren't vibing with what's happening onscreen just turn it off lmao cause there's so much bad shit out there you could waste years watching it.
those are all of my recommendations (and a few to avoid for good measure), i hope you enjoy some of them and thank you for letting me ramble about westerns!!

hm. done with atfots. much enjoyment, some dubiousness, many thoughts.
contemplating (not even critically, just, like, thoughtfully) what constitutes a sufficient & satisfactory Plot. cf le guin on conflict, probably.
also contemplating like. tension between (1) interpersonal visions i'm glad & grateful for in a world-expanding sort of way, & (2) the way in which those visions' non-normativity does pretty directly make them not the key to the lock of my in-certain-ways-very-normative heart. (which is fine! not everything has to be for me! but to some extent my reading practice is for me, so, you know. just like. thinking thru my relationship to that aspect of the text.)
also really not sure what to do with the minor-but-recurring 'ancient telepathic underground dinosaur people' joke. like i'm not actually sufficiently up on my david icke to be sure how much it does or doesn't map onto that nastiness, and honestly i suspect it's maybe closer to von däniken in certain ways, but like. why are we splashing around in the shallows of insidious conspiracy theory land and framing it as just a funny joke it's fun to keep referencing. not real thrilled abt that aspect of the book & wondering what if any discussion there's been of it.
[…fwiw, did go back after i wrote that last graf and poke at the various mentions of the above theme in the text and like. arguably the joke is meant to be that this belief is a delusion based on certain historical truths that got lost/twisted, thus underscoring that it's Obviously Nonsense, but. idk. feels a bit to me like the book's other various coy references to ~historical~ homophobia/transphobia/binarism—like, what are you doing being cutesy about this. why are we going there at all. will we be getting anything out of this that's worth having our bruises poked like this. personally i can't say i did.]

3.) any recurring images/elements?
Hmmm this is kind of broad so I’m not totally sure how to interpret it I guess I will go with like. If it was a tv show. What visual motifs or recurring shots would there be. I think if there were constantly shots of Rocio alone like in an empty space that would be kind of funny imagine watching a show and there’s an obvious meta narrative focus on how lonely you are I’d be so mad. That and shots of like her back while she’s reading something or working on something like she’s closed off to the world or whatever. Definitely a lot of contrast of darkness vs light though for sure like places with people in them being associated with yellow/orange light whereas empty places are associated with the dark.
Also there would probably be many unnecessarily long shots focusing on nature and the environment around the characters bc that’s what I personally like to see

Honestly. Not much lol I feel like a lot of it is just me trying to make something that appeals to me personally just thinking of like aesthetics
in the extended secret worldbuilding there are some aspects inspired by or influenced by real history. that being said I try not to avoid making that too direct or have it come up too often bc 1) it’s easy to make it extremely tasteless or at least inaccurate/shallow in its portrayal ofc 2) it is ultimately a fantasy world where I wanted to make shit up + have everything be original rather than have like. direct copies of real places + events. I think it’s like background concepts can be to some extent based on reality but specific events are all homebrewed yk

I guess you could say I was inspired by actively trying to go against like. Tolkien esque or popular YA fantasy tropes of the late 2010s early 2020s. Bc a lot of what made me want to make the story in the first place was being tired of and annoyed by the kind of tone that was prevalent in YA fantasy at the time

13.) how long have you been working on this project? what has changed from the outset?
A little over 3 years like since February 2020 :3. I love this question it feels very behind the scenes like Im talking in a documentary. Mostly the structure of the story has become much more linear when the original was like arcs based if that makes sense? Like episodic even though the episodes were pretty large in scale + theoretical length. Ofc a lot of the characters’ personalities have as well. I think the main focus too like initially it was just for fun but when I first added like a vague general central theme it was a lot abt dissociation from your identity + the weight of living and things like that. Life is hard but it’s worth it <3 And now there’s more focus on the nuances of interpersonal connection and things like that. I do like the original theme though I wouldn’t want to drop that idea entirely even though I’d probably want to have it show up in a more nuanced or subtle way idk
16.) imagine the entire story takes place but in the meantime the characters all also have tumblr. what kind of (terrible) tumblr posts would happen?
rocio would hate all forms of social media viscerally. if she absolutely has to use it then it’s several thousand word long rants that stay in the drafts for eternity
cirillo probably the type to just use it as a diary
angel runs an extremely popular yet controversial fan page for enstars or some shit (<I mean. in universe it would be about 1400s romance novels) but occasionally vagues abt his personal life and everything he says sounds extremely concerning. And then like once he ends up on the news everyone’s like omg… bone stealing witch tier drama
gloria only posts thirst traps + posts that are like “will be in [x city] tomorrow if anyone wants to meet up 👅” with every location change

my policeman thoughts!! under cut bc idk how long it will be. not that long though i think.
general thoughts:
-my fav characters were patrick and julia, though obvi marion remains my fav just looking at it from the movie-standpoint
-it took me some time t get out my own head analyzing the main trio and asking myself if i thought they were doing well, etc but after abt 30 minutes i was able to ease into the story. kinda same as dwd but i think dwd took less time (possibly cus i was also in a dark theater w no ability to pause and consider anything)
-the pacing felt off to me i know i complained abt the movie length but i wish things had been given more time. i get what they were doing w marion and patrick’s perspectives but i dont think it was as effective and didnt translate from the book for me
-book was better, of course
-movie did not have enough julia!!! far from it. i want endless julia
-marion was done so dirty tbh the hints at her not being straight were almost completely gone (julia was obvious, but i feel like in the book marion is also clearly read as not straight)
-i love marion and patrick being parallels to each other. not just in regards to tom, but how they’re more often allies than not. how julia points out their similar interests. in my head marion looks at patrick, sees these parallels, and wonders what else they have in common.
-even having been done dirty marion is The Most Interesting character in the movie. so many scenes it was clear there was an internal struggle going on, which im reading as her quest for heterosexuality, fighting to maintain her marriage, questioning of herself, her relationship to julia and patrick, etc. adored her.
-i did not cry. soz to everyone who did but twas not that emotion-evoking to me.
harry acting:
-fairly good i think!! awkward at parts, but for the most part it didnt distract me. again like dwd i found him best in very emotive scenes like anger, sadness, internal conflict, etc and least effective in routine or sincere scenes (like when he’s just having a conversation, or standing around, etc)
-i know ppl had words abt his accent but tbh i dont have the kind of ear for accents or to say if harry was doing well or not, or if he was talking more in his natural accent or an altered one so. it wasnt an issue for me. sometimes i thought he sounded weird but i actually think im just not used to him enunciating so much.
how i would make it shorter bc why in the hell was it 2 hours:
-sorry to the older versions of tom/marion/patrick, but Were It My Movie, i would have just eliminated the whole past vs present, retrospective aspect. i dont feel like its as effective in movie format, whereas the whole concept of letters telling their stories in the book works for me. i dont think the later scenes added much 2 the movie and if anything opened up more confusion for me.
-for example, when older tom sees nigel and (presumably) his boyfriend in the shop, is that meant to be like....his first time seeing a gay couple existing openly? after like 40 years from the younger story line? what?>??
-in the last 20 minutes where older marion is like. Explaining everything? bad ending. could have done w/o that. marion leaving to her sister’s>?? bad, try again. when its younger tom standing w older patrick so its like. a mirage idk?? Bad. hated that pls take it back.
-just cut the last 15 minutes. honestly.

answering a couple anon asks in one, topics addressed include how i got my job, infinity train opinions, commission prices:
Thank you!! And it was the former, one of the backgrounds leads who was handling hiring for the studio found my work via portfolio day on twitter and e-mailed me cold LOL this tweet specifically.
They offered me a bg paint test, testing process took abt a week and then there was an interview and then I was hired..! Though out of the crop of new hires I was brought on with many of them were more proactive, getting in touch w staff via linkedin or alumni connections, asking around for apps and openings etc. Honestly I feel pretty lucky that they found my work because the studio wasn’t rly on my radar. For me, it was like a year out of recovery from a pretty bad health thing and i was feeling down about my art and tired of dead end job apps, preparing to move back to my parents house LOL... it rly came at the right time.
Thank you!! This is a hard question... I love every season and all the characters for different reasons. I guess.... Lake? Is my favorite character overall?? I just think she’s such a break-out star like if you had to have a infinity train character represent the series in super smash brothers it’d be her LOL. I think a lot of the characters of infinity train are products by their story but in the case of book 2 the story is a product of lake. but ALSO if you could mash Min-Gi and Ryan to count as a single character they might win out for my fave spot whos to say. their character push and pull is so subtle but endlessly fascinating and also i have asian diaspora feeling about them that cannot be discounted LOL.
And I think overall my favorite season is actually book 3.... though 2 comes super close (And is maybe more better constructed from a technical perspective... imo)!! And I love 1 and 4 for their unique aspects as well like they’re all excellent stories in their own rights imo. It’s hard to compare.
Hi, I’m sorry you probably sent this ask a while ago. I don’t currently have commissions open because I am very busy and I anticipate to continue to be busy for... several more months at least. as for a price sheet.... well I can’t promise anything but I think loosely it’d look something like 1 character full body $70 (additional character +$30). Anything with a background would be $125+.... I like to do comics commissions for like $110 per page. Um... and I’m happy to work with a commissioner if they’re looking for something specific like a specific style or format. Also I am willing to work with limited budgets/time constraints if I have the time hehe!! Like I love doing commissions for ppls birthdays/anniversaries/gifts etc. It’s rly just a matter of e-mailing me and hashing it out *** WHEN I AM OPEN LOL.... I am not open right now. LOTR (films) Review
So I finally watched the LOTR films (20 years later). I’m super excited to review these because I read the books very recently so I feel at least a little prepared to voice some opinions. Overall I loved the films, here’s a very long (but by no means exhaustive) compilation of my thoughts, which are of course, totally subjective:
(Warning: a lot of me saying “well, actually, in the book...”)
THINGS I LIKED
- Casting! not much to say here, I thought the casting was great. One of my favorite actors that I didn’t think i’d have a huge opinion on was David Wenham as Faramir. I was kinda ambivalent on him when I saw pictures but i thought he did a great job. he showed his quality.
- Music. so much has been said about the films on the music front. I can’t offer too much original insight but when a bit of the Shire theme started to play as Frodo tries to make his way up Mount Doom I cried a little.
- Boromir and Aragorn. I liked the scene where they interact a little in Rivendell. I also like how Aragorn saves Boromir in the Moria battle and gives him this little nod of friendship. I think the films did a great job portraying the dynamic they have where Aragorn is clearly suspicious of Boromir’s motivations but grows to respect him to the point where he doesn’t even blame Boromir for being corrupted by the ring because he understands that, at heart, Boromir is a good person.
- Sam and Frodo in Osgiliath. I expected to be kind of annoyed with the way this plot point played out (I knew ahead of time that it strayed from the book), but I actually liked it a lot. As I’ll say later, there’s some gripes I have with the way the films extremely play up the disagreements between Frodo and Sam, but I loved the scene where Frodo pulls the sword on Sam and then seems so defeated when he realizes what he’s done. I was pleasantly surprised by how emotional this scene made me. It’s admittedly A Lot, but it was done nicely, especially in conjunction with Sam’s “there’s good in this world” speech.
- Treatment of the ending. I almost think I should dislike the ending as it is in the movies, but my heart is soft and I like that they sugarcoated it a bit. I know the whole point of the Scouring of the Shire and Frodo’s depression conveys a lot about war and trauma and I think that is important, but after watching these things for twelve hours I just wanted Frodo & co. to be happy and I was kinda relieved that they cut the Scouring. Does that make me weak and perhaps bad at film analysis? yes. do I care? no. I was also very glad that the movies didn’t portray how depressed Sam was about losing Frodo in the end. Yes, he cries, but when he walks home to his family he seems happy and in the books that scene came off so much bleaker. I definitely liked the lighter tone.
THINGS I WAS NEUTRAL ON/DIDN’T LIKE
- Arwen. (Neutral) I don’t hate her, I don’t love her. I think the story she and Aragorn have is compelling and I 100% get why the filmmakers decided to add it to give her character more depth, but it felt misplaced at times. maybe it’s just because it was the only storyline I didn’t know in depth, but the scenes with the Arwen/Aragorn flashbacks felt a bit confusing and disorienting. Don’t have anything against Arwen as a character though, I think she’s pretty alright.
- Gimli. (Complicated thoughts) I want to start off by saying I don’t dislike Gimli. I like him a lot! I just think the movies did him a bit dirty. He had some good movie-exclusive moments, but I think his character really fell into this place of being the butt of too many jokes. Would have liked to see some more serious Gimli development, especially with his relationship to Legolas. Their friendship felt too much like subtext here, whereas it’s explored far more in the books.
- Two Towers Pacing. (Didn’t really like). The pacing of TTT was...weird. maybe I’m going into this with a closed mind because of the books, but it was odd to have the movie begin with Frodo and Sam and then have them only appear for a few rapid scenes after that. I think the fact that a WHOLE LOT of what happens to Frodo and Sam in TTT is moved to RotK is what makes it feel that way? In the books, Two Towers ends with Sam discovering that Frodo isn’t dead from Shelob’s sting, and I was surprised by how long it took the movies to get to that part. However, I will give the films a little leeway because I think they needed Frodo & Sam content for RotK, since most of what happens in that book is them walking through Mordor basically starving and dying. Doesn’t make for great cinema I guess, so they had to put the whole Shelob/Cirith Ungol saga into the final film. Still, I think there’s a weird lack of Frodo and Sam’s presence in TTT.
- The go home/missing bread arc. (Full of rage abt this one) yeah. so. my criticism of this is gonna sound pretty tired because people complain and complain about this part of RotK. but I’m gonna complain some more!! I don’t think the split between Frodo and Sam does anything for the plot. I really don’t. I guess it emphasizes the fact that Sam doesn’t understand how much Frodo is projecting onto Gollum, but it’s just. unnecessary angst? They had enough angst in the Osgiliath scene! Which I actually liked! And it simply doesn’t make a lot of sense for Frodo to suspect Sam of eating the bread when Sam had already offered Frodo his own food and made it clear that he would very much starve if it meant making sure Frodo could eat. But what I hate most about this scene is not that Frodo gets mad and tells Sam to go home. No. It’s that Sam actually... thinks about doing that? he actually? goes down the staircase? emotionally this is bad because Sam clearly cared enough about Frodo to follow him this far, to nearly drown for him, so why would he leave now. Practically this is bad because 1. how would Sam get out of Mordor alone and 2. where would he go. He turns around almost immediately, yes, but what was his plan. where was he going. why.
THINGS I LOVED
- For Frodo! This line, and every other shoutout to Frodo. In the books, they didn’t really actively talk about/worry about Frodo (and Sam) as much as they do in the movies. I like that they talk about Frodo more in the movies! I like that they’re thinking about him! I know it was implied that they were in the books, but I really like how it’s shown here. I think it gave a more complete picture of how much they all care about him on a personal level in addition to just needing him to succeed from a pragmatic standpoint.
- Merry and Pippin! I feel like Merry and Pippin were so well rounded in the films. I’ve heard criticism about them being turned into comic relief characters (which they always were a little bit) but it honestly didn’t feel that way to me. They had a bit of a rough start because the films didn’t make their motives for going with Frodo as deep as the books did, but I think that by TTT they were absolutely amazing characters in every scene. In RotK their respective arcs hit really well and the scene where Pippin is singing to Denethor? *chef’s kiss* poetic. beautiful. sad. idk man I just feel like I have such a newfound appreciation for Merry and Pippin.
- Parallels! people have pointed out the parallel of Frodo and Sam’s hands before (drowning scene/mount doom scene) and I love how the movie did that. Just stunning. Also! The moving of the Smeagol & Deagol scene to RotK surprised me because in the books it was like,,,at the beginning of Fellowship, but I think the placement of it in the movies really helped emphasize the similarities between Smeagol & Deagol and Frodo & Sam (and how much Frodo fears this similarity.) There were a lot of other well done parallels between storylines and a few bits of dialogue that were repeated with great timing, but I can’t remember all of them at the moment.
Edit: here’s one I remembered! when Frodo wakes up after being rescued and sees Gandalf, he says Gandalf’s name in a very similar tone to the one he used at the very beginning of Fellowship. It was a nice little subtle connection.
- I can’t carry it for you...alright this is self-indulgent. everyone knows I love this line. I’m just so glad it made it into the movie intact. Sean Astin’s delivery was amazing. I cheered. My mom cheered. It’s a raw line and it makes me feel secret emotions...like if shrimp colors were feelings. that line makes me feel shrimp feelings. idk i’m so tired i just watched twelve hours of movies this review is decreasing in quality by the minute but i’m about done for now anyway
Various silly afterthoughts
- I would have liked to see Sam kiss Frodo’s hands at least once. This happens 50 thousand times in the books, they could have given me one scene. one little extended edition scene. Please Peter Jackson I’m dyin’ out here
- They literally made Gollum so hateable. kinda the point yes, but I was so on board with Sam’s murderous rage. I know why Gollum’s a profoundly complex character, I know why Frodo pities him, I know why murder is bad, but I too would throw hands with that creature. also he literally body shamed Sam so much what was that skdjksdjksd. Sam is lovely. let him commit a small homicide.
- the scene where merry and pippin drink the tall boy juice (as someone once referred to it in the tags of one of my posts)... not accurate to the books (since they don’t ever drink it with the end goal of getting tall) but so accurate to life. if I found some water that made me taller than my friends? let me at it
- Frodo panicking when he falls into the spider webs. so real bestie. i felt just as panicked watching that. i am terrified of spiders and Elijah Wood did an amazing job doing exactly what i’d do in the situation. yelping a lot and falling down.
- I feel like it’s never stated that Sam’s a gardener (or at least that he’s specifically Frodo’s gardener) until he tells Faramir he is. Did I miss this. Or do they really never say. are you just meant to know. are you just meant to pick up gardener vibes from him.
