what inspired the character designs in amadeus?
What a fun question! With the caveat that specific things can't be discussed without spoilers (and therefore won't be discussed), I'll try to talk about them to the best of my ability.
Amadeus:
Tumblr media
I made the first sketches of his design so long ago I barely remember what the initial vibes were. I do remember that his long straight hair and rich boy vibes were kind of meant to be Lucius Malfoy-ish (Prisoner of Azkaban was a huge reason I initially became obsessed with werewolves, so that's where this inspiration came from. I don't want Amadeus to have anything to do with HP beyond this, for obvious reasons; but I should admit this influence).
As far as his actual clothing, Amadeus's weird shirt-coat thing is actually largely drawn from the cape I made for a DGS Sherlock Holmes cosplay. Hound of the Baskervilles is another huge inspiration for the game, and I find it way easier to draw clothes that I have made or worked with in some way, so I drew from that.
Tumblr media
(this is the only photo I have easily on hand, lmao)
The pants for his full design are based off of pants I made for a Lloyd Irving cosplay, and the boots kind of are as well. So well, pretty much, cosplay gave me a ton of experience interpreting weird clothes into IRL fashion and making them, so now I get to do the opposite thing where I have a ton of weird clothes I've made that I can pull from when thinking about what characters might wear.
The most iconic part of his design, the arms, well... to put this in vague terms because of spoiler reasons: that was an example of the design actually being revised to fit plot details. It has resulted in a way cooler and more interesting design, but it wasn't originally there. I had to realize some plot things before I could reflect them in the design, and now the design would be unrecognizable without it.
Solea:
Tumblr media
Solea went under drastic revision since my first version of her, because her character also underwent drastic revision and the OG design no longer felt like her. I wrote about this a little bit in a devlog, but in order to draw a hairstyle for her that I liked, I spent about 3 hours watching Black haircare videos on YouTube to get a feel for different typical styles for her hair texture and variations on those styles, and bookmarking the ones that felt like they had the right vibes. After that, I drew a mockup and sent it to a friend who has similar hair texture to Solea, and asked "does this hairstyle make sense?" and she said "yep!" so it was a go.
In terms of the rest of her design: I'm being intentionally vague here, but there are reasons she looks the way she does, and it took a lot of tweaking to get it to feel right. My favorite part is the ugly ass gardening gloves she's got on. Without those it still felt too Disney's Hercules-esque (especially the top half - her bottom half design fixes this somewhat, but you can't see it in the talksprite). But the big ugly functional gardening glove contrasting with her pretty flowing fabrics I think results in the right aesthetic for her.
The Witch:
Tumblr media
It came to me in a dream.
OK, not really, what actually happened was I was thinking about Amadeus while lying in bed about to go to sleep, and for some reason imagined the witch who lives in his home now descending from the second floor banister looking like some abstract weird ass orange-red creature. It was one of those things where I was just like "that's weird as fuck. Kind of creepy. ...Let's do it." I remembered the head was circular with square "petals" protruding, and the bottom was kind of triangular, but since it was all made up in my head it wasn't that concrete. So when it came time to actually draw her, I drew from the stylized and very Shaped designs in Super Paper Mario, and tried to get it to feel close to the image in my head.
...It was only after coloring it that I realized it looks very, very Homestuck. This was probably a huge subconscious influence, but not for a second did I consciously consider it. If anything I think my initial daydream was inspired by an enemy from Final Fantasy VIII.
Anyway, hope this was somewhat interesting! Thanks for the ask!

Game Dev Notes
Really great art, style, and animations - very unique
limited music, no character themes
new case as a bonus for the DS edition at the time
iconic quotes and cases - referenced every year
love the resolution of the characters in the credits
last case introduced 3D investigation - really fun and loved
incredible character design and emotional growth
Summary: What an incredibly start to a series. I completely understand why people love Ace Attorney so much. Amazing characters and development, great and insane humor, blatant homoeroticism, and well thought out mysteries. Although it's not to the scale of TGAA, you can see all the major inspiration TGAA took from just the first game. I believe AA1 would be just as phenomenal as TGA if it had all of the same resources. I absolutely love these characters, they have so much personality and Capcom really knows how to utilize humor. The relationship between Phoenix and Miles is great. They complement each other so well and learn to embrace each other's passion to create such a beautiful duo. They are the lawyers to be feared because they will stop at nothing to discover the truth. They're also so in love with each other and they're not subtle about it. I loved each case as they really highlighted everyone's personality and motivation/ The discovery of Edgeworth's past and how Phoenix helped him, hell, saved him and shaped him to pursue a future filled with integrity. The art is so amazing. The switch version doesn't have the pixel art but for such an older game, the art is incredible. There's limited music and there's a lot of running around but the charm of the characters and great mysteries is what boosted the score. I am so excited to play more of these games and meet some of the fan favorite characters. The AA community is so talented and loving. I am so happy to be here!

"...My learned Nipponese friend is obviously in training to be a clown, the way he regales us with such witticisms."
Barok just.... I mean I am still correct in what I'm saying, but damn, how do you even come back from that one?? Ryunosuke is going to need therapy for that statement alone.
Also I'm soooooo upset the games aren't fully voice acted, I would've loved to hear that!!
The more I play DGS the more I want a separate anime just for this whole era. I'm not even asking much. Just the cases and-
Okay wait I just clicked on my switch screen to prevent it from shutting down and he follows up with a toast to "my future career in the circus"???? Holy fuck, this man!!
Soooo I suppose you can definitely count me in for the Barok van Zieks Simp Club. I feel like I owe him my soul and part of my income.
Such an iconic statement that it even transcends timelines. Barok must be Edgeworth's ancestor, right? (Yeah, I know, the "you're the entire circus" thing is just a meme).
I can understand his thoughts, though. Think about it from Barok's perspective for a moment. You are the most celebrated Crown prosecutor in the country who only takes on high-profile cases, not that you care about your own status, but you do want to make sure that the good name of the British judicial system doesn't get sullied. This nobody from a different country who did not even properly study law and who does not have any real world experience whatsoever shows up in court to pretend to do real attorney work. This wannabe also makes his debut defending one of the most notorious individuals in town, who you definitely know to be shady (let's leave it at that, okay?). Surely this kid can't be trusted, right? What's he up to?
The youngster goes on to disrespect court procedures because he's not familiar with them, accuses people without any shred of evidence, bluffs, puts forward hypotheses merely based on ideas or feelings, disregards many of the protocols. Of course the prosecution is frustrated. Wouldn't we all be if we were part of the game? What makes Ryunosuke charming to us as the audience, makes him bothersome to the characters in the game that are involved in all of this. :D
I'm actually surprised that prosecutor Van Zieks just goes along with it, when he would have had grounds to ask this learned friend to be removed from the courtroom due to being unfit for court. Barok is very patient and even helps Ryunosuke quite a bit/mentors him, as well as cooperates with him when he technically doesn't have to, because in the end, this prosecutor only cares about justice. (Gosh, there's more I want to say, but I will refuse to use any spoilers because I know you haven't finished the game yet, so let's end it here).
You absolutely speak my mind! A well-made anime in the world of DGS would be so very amazing. Hearing our beloved characters speak (as you've mentioned), seeing them move. The character design is superb, the world is beautiful. I adore the whole franchise (some games/characters more than others), but this cast is my favourite. From Ryunosuke to Barok to Susato to Iris etc., I love them all! I am not the same since I have finished this duology. Barok is my favourite character in the franchise (surprise, I know), with Ryunosuke coming in second and Susato coming in third, which is quite the achievement against such all-time-greats as Edgeworth, Phoenix and Maya. :)
Enjoy the rest of the game(s)! 😊
Edit/P.S.: In case you read my blog here, I can only recommend you filter out the tags "tgaa spoilers" and "dgs spoilers", as that's how I tag my spoilery posts and reblogs. Other people may use the same or other tags.

Wave Based game research 1
Cod Zombies:
Tumblr media
Looking into wave based games the perfect place to start is the most known and loved wave survival series Call of duty zombies and its loved for a reason as even I think its always fun to play with some spare time. I think this firstly because of the maps mostly every cod zombies mode has had a iconic map throughout its time each one has its own theme design wise with different normal and special zombies, bonus enemies to fight, weapons, upgrades etc it just always feels so new every time you play even though its the same mode.
Secondly The guns and upgrades are also a really fun part of the game mode and something that makes it alot more enjoyable. first off the wide range of weapons is always great making it always a fresh experience with the choices of gun around the map. Also the special guns are always fun some are even map specific making it a fun and enjoable weapon to look out for as its fun and really strong the big examples of this would be the Ray gun and the Wunderwaffe DG-2 as they are both iconic in the game. Finally I want to talk about the pack a punch machine that basically upgrades your gun it not only makes the gun look way cooler but with upgraded damage and sound effect it always makes you feel so much cooler and strong
Finally I want to compliment the buffs that you can buy throughout the game. I personally think this makes the game so much better as All of these buffs are mainly quality of life changes so that the player can have an easier time playing. Things like juggernaut which buffs the players health just makes the game a nice bit easier for the player so they can take a hit every now and then without having to worry about it.
Fortnite save the world :
Tumblr media
Fortnite save the world even though not the main game of fornite anymore does still look fun and enjoyable as a wave based game. with also tower defence vibes in between it. To start I like How instead of a survival of your own character you defending some sort of place from the zombies this kinda makes it a tower defence game but in first person like orcs must die. On top of this if the player attacks these zombies differently from other games it actually switches targets and damages the player making defending the base not the only thought on the players mind as they also now have to try and stay alive themselves
Secondly I really like the use of the traps and materials inside of this game you can see how the battleroyal mode got its ideas from this already existing game with this having all the options to destroy things for materials and then use them materials to craft better guns or traps to defend against the zombies path its a very cool way of having weapon progressing throughout a run of the game.
Risk Of Rain:
Tumblr media
Risk of rain is a different wave based game completely unique to the other things I've talked so far with its interesting world enemy's and characters to choose from.
The first thing I really like about the this game is the amount of different classes you can choose from for each run it really adds to the replay ability of the game as the each have different powers ability's etc all making a new run every time letting you play the game in different ways all the time.
On top of this I really like the enemy's in this game all other. Not only are they all really nice looking and designed well I think the way they are all so threatening and make such a impact it really feels like everything could kill you if you mess up a single thing.
Finally the bosses are are also terrifying and even more scary than all the normal minions and the challenge to beat one seems really hard. on top of this they have well done attack sequences and great animations.

Barok van Zieks compared to every other prosecutor
While Barok is undoubtedly his own character, I noticed that he has something in common with, or is a direct parallel of, almost every one of his predecessors.
Spoilers for every game of the series, of course.
Miles Edgeworth: Barok was clearly modeled to resemble Miles superficially.
Their designs are similar to one another: Barok has a messier version of Miles’ iconic haircut and they both have a cravat. Their similarities are more apparent if you compare Barok’s fancy outfit with Miles’ rookie outfit.
They’re both serious, reserved, professional (more or less) and not great with people. Miles is however more smug in court, while Barok is almost completely stone-faced.
They both have a scary nickname, the Demon Prosecutor and the Reaper of the Bailey - Barok is, of course, set up to be a subversion of the cliché started with Miles, the perfect untouchable prosecutor.
They both care a lot about finding the truth, even using questionable means to do so (coercing a testimony out of a mentally ill witness vs. trampling over Scotland Yard’s authority). However, Miles had to reach that point after grueling character development, while Barok already starts out this way - Miles helping Phoenix in 1-3 is considered a huge deal both in- and out-of-universe, while Barok helps Ryuu pretty much every time.
Both of them have a tragic past that involves the death of an older, dear relative and a miscarriage of justice that left them disillusioned. Interestingly, Miles eventually adopted the idea that “you never know who is guilty and who is not, so I always try to get a Guilty verdict in case”, while Barok specifically goes for people who are guilty and only escape justice through illegal means (until he meets Ryuu, at least).
Obviously, both of them were falsely arrested in a trial that forced that tragic past to come to light, although Miles learned something comforting (he didn’t kill his own father), while Barok learned something world-shattering (his dear brother was the Professor and Barok sent the wrong person to jail). They also got closer to their rival because of said trials.
From what I gleaned from the Japanese version of DGS, they both speak in a similar way, using watashi and not bothering with polite speech - with Barok it’s even more obvious with his iconic oyurushiitadakitai, “pray forgive the discourtesy”, which is non-polite keigo.
Franziska von Karma: not much, actually. Both of them come from a noble Germanic family, are cold and socially inept, look up to their older brother (but they express this in very different ways) and became prosecutors to follow in their family’s steps. Otherwise, Barok never expresses any feelings of inferiority over Klint, and his courtroom strategy is the total opposite of Franziska’s.
Godot: this is going to be fun :)
Both of them have a personal but unjustified grudge against their rival attorney.
Both of them drink a lot in court, and they like to use metaphors related to their drink of choice (at least in translation, in Japanese Barok is not as obsessed with wine).
Both of them disappeared for 5 years after something traumatic.
Both of them are still grieving the loss of a loved one, which is the reason they’re so unpleasant in the present.
Both of them do (and say) questionable things because of their unhealed grief.
Both of them eventually bond with a young perky girl with no parents.
Both of them are associated with death, but in a different way.
Both of them are a twist of the “perfect prosecutor” cliché - Godot never lost a case because he never prosecuted before meeting Phoenix, while Barok is not feared because he has a perfect record, but because of the legend of the Reaper.
And, as we know by know, Barok’s famous Legjection comes from a scrapped idea for Godot. Basically Barok is Godot’s counterpart!
As a contrast, Barok never killed anyone despite being suspected of doing so, while the final stretch of T&T is proving that Godot did kill someone.
Klavier Gavin: both Barok and Klavier looked up to their older brothers who turned out to be killers, although Klint is more sympathetic than Kristoph, and both of them were manipulated into falsely convicting someone with forged evidence. Otherwise, I don’t think I can say anything more than this post by @draceempressa hasn’t said already.
Simon Blackquill: they're both intelligent, dark and intimidating, and people suspect they might have killed people, but in reality they're full of sorrow and they've accepted the idea that they might die. They also both particularly outrageous in court, with Simon straight up walking away and Barok Legjecting :P there is a reason Capcom associated Simon and Barok in their Capcom Café art.
Nahyuta Sahdmadhi: they’re both racist against the protagonist. More seriously: they’re both associated with the concept of “predestined failure” and giving up to their fate: Nahyuta is fond of saying “let it go and move on”, sure of the fact that he can predict the outcome of the trial, and he also resigned himself to being Ga’ran’s puppet for the sake of protecting his sister and mother, even though he stood aside watching hundreds of people die (he protected his close circle and caused harm to the greater community); it’s commonly accepted that “van Zieks” comes from banjikyūsu, “all is over”, emphasizing the legend that no one can escape death once they’re prosecuted by him, and Barok himself, while knowing that he’s not the Reaper, resigned himself to accept his role to keep crime rates low, even though it meant being an assassination target for years (he protected the greater community and caused harm to his close circle). Oh, speaking of which, they were both used as instruments of deaths, but Nahyuta was aware of it, while Barok wasn’t, and Nahyuta wanted to protect a young girl related to him, while Barok was kept away from a young girl related to him to protect her. Their appareances are one the opposite of the other, similarly to how Nahyuta contrasts Simon: the Last Rite Prosecutor is associated with white and he’s holy looking, while the Reaper of the Bailey is dark, associated with black and dark blue, and he looks like a creature of the night.

Barok van Zieks: official art and symbolism
So I remembered that teaser of dgs/tgaa made for the first game (I think), where all the main characters are briefly introduced by names and designs. In it, every character has personalized icons that represent them (i.e Ryuu has his daruma doll, Sherlock has some gears, Iris has a teapot and a typewriter and so on) and while Barok obviously has scythes because of his status as The Reaper and a chalice and a bottle for his wine because of his constant drinking during trials, there are also two chess pieces: a knight and a king.
(Warning: it’s a pretty long post, there are also spoilers mentioned, read at your own risk).
Tumblr media
In his office, he has a chessboard as well, which could hint at him being a chess player or simply playing chess as a hobby when the mood strikes (Ryuu wishing to play chess with him one day was so cute). Playing chess is all about logic and strategy, skills that as a prosecutor are his bread and butter. However, chess is also about metaphors and symbolism: it is often said that life is like a game of chess where every move represents a decision to take for the better or the worst. In particular:
The knight pieces in chess are the protective knights in the castle. The pieces are shaped like a horse because it is symbolic of what knights rode during battle. These are also protected by the tower because back in medieval times knights were affluent and only well-educated and upper-class warriors were considered knights. They are also considered as protectors of the royal family, the first line of defense in case the enemy breaks through the castle walls. The Knights also have the ability to leap over other pieces since knights rode on horses in real life. They are also the only pieces that can start the game instead of a pawn. [...] Many theorize that it symbolizes the beautiful and graceful movements of a knight riding on a horse (source).
Or, again:
The knight is a noble warrior mounted on a horse and wielding a sword. He’s the only piece that can jump over other pieces to reach his desired destination, making him the most unique chess piece of them all.
In the olden days, knights were considered one of the most trustworthy and appropriate for a mission. This is why knights are often referred to as “knights in shining armor”. The fact that a knight uniquely attacks by jumping over opponents is also in line with the old saying that says knights “get by on guts, not gadgets.” (source).
In this case, given the various metaphors and interpretations assigned to it in chess, it's very likely that the knight chess piece of the picture is meant to represent Barok himself. Barok comes from an aristocratic family, and he works as prosecutor of the Crown (the knight at the service of the Queen, the head of the state for whom justice must be made, thus he's the knight who fights for the sake of the country) who made the mission of his life that to fight against crimes and corruption. Plus, he’s a capable fighter as an expert swordsman. If I remember correctly, there was also a note on the artbook where the character designer wrote that at first, he and Gina were supposed to make an entrance riding a horse each.
The king instead, is a bit more complex:
The king is not as powerful as the queen, but he is considered the most important piece that needs the most protection. Once a king is trapped and no other moves will allow him the game is over. [...] A game of chess is like an intense battle between kingdoms and this is what chess pieces represent in every game. (Source)
The king could be equated to a sergeant or any member of the military who is a fighting part of the battle. The king must stay away from harm… all the time.
[...] The King’s purpose is to protect the other pieces and to make sure that the player wins the game. Or better said: not lose the game. The king can only move one square at a time in either direction. His allegiance never wavers even if you are playing against him. The King is the most valuable piece on the board and he is the last piece to be captured.
The King represents the soul of a person, though in chess it is a separate and distinct piece of its own. It occupies the most valuable real estate on the board, and protecting this piece is the objective of other pieces. The King cannot move by itself and is completely dependent on its ally, the Queen, to accompany it during its movements.
Having no special abilities of its own as well as no protection of any kind, the King is the most vulnerable piece in the game. (Source)
The king chess piece of the picture could be possibly interpreted in different ways:
1- it’s a symbol of the corrupt British judiciary Barok is also part of, works with, that he doesn’t even trust anymore and that in fact, is comprised of all the people who backstabbed him (Stronghart/Vortex, Dr. Wilson, Gregson, Dr. Sithe and all those present at his trial who were ready to support Stronghart/Vortex’s schemes);
2- it hints at Stronghart/Vortex only, who’s the most powerful and influential character introduced (aside from the Queen) who actually uses Barok as his own pawn and who’s on the verge to rearrange the entire judicial system as he wishes (so that the judicial system he’s building could be interpreted as his own kingdom, in a way) but who’s actually an evil person who’s willing to commit atrocities for his own gain;
3- it represents Klint, the former Lord of the manor of the van Zieks estate, the head of the van Zieks family but also the former Chief Prosecutor. Barok's older brother and guide, the person who made him who he is today. A leading and important figure of noble origins fighting for justice in the country whose pure soul was consumed by a brutal reality check.
While looking for the picture above I also found the picture below.
Tumblr media
This is just a piece of merch and I know I may be looking too much into it but there are other two symbols that picked my interest: a waning crescent moon and diamonds.
The moon is such a rich icon that its symbolism is basically almost infinite, though, looking for specific meanings on lunar phases and in particular, about the waning crescent moon I found this:
Once the moon has reached its full state, it begins to recede once more and reduce to a new moon. The waning crescent is the phase just before the new moon and is characterized by a thin crescent. Where the waxing crescent brings with it a wealth of new opportunities and optimism, a waning crescent brings a sense of surrender and reflection.
During the waxing crescent you may want to take on a new challenge or project, but towards the end of the lunar cycle when the waning crescent descends it is time to reflect on your thoughts and experiences and prepare for a fresh start once the new moon is reached. (Source)
The moon is again partially illuminated but is now decreasing in size. This represents a time of reflection, purging, and decluttering.
Time to let go of people and things that no longer serve you. These can be relationships, negative thoughts, poor habits, or projects you are no longer interested in.
This period of purging allows you to start again with a clear mind to pursue fresh projects or goals during the new moon. (Source)
I’m not even sure if it’s intentional or if it’s an accidental foreshadowing but it could tie well with Barok’s character arc, perhaps.
It’s also interesting to note that one of the animals associated with the moon is the wolf, Barok is sort of a lone wolf, too. The wolf motif could also be related to Balmung as well.
And last but not least, the diamonds.
The diamonds in playing card suits become pentacles/coins in tarot decks.
The Suit of Pentacles Tarot card meanings cover material aspects of life including work, business, trade, property, money, and other material possessions. The positive aspects of the Suit of Pentacles include manifestation, realization, proof and prosperity.
[...] Pentacles Tarot cards often represent the astrological signs of Earth –Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. When you see a Pentacles Court Card in a Tarot reading, it often relates to a person with a Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn star sign. Generally, Pentacles people are practical, career-minded, down-to-earth, and generous. They are tactile beings and like to experience the physical, tangible world. They are connected through the senses and seek pleasurable and sometimes indulgent experiences (Source)
Does all this sound familiar? Hmm...

5 Classical Hits For People Who Hate Classical Music
Hate is a strong word. I try to use it sparingly; cold-callers saying I've been involved in an accident when I haven't, people who sniff and don't use a tissue, computer viruses, and kumquats are all things I hate. Dubstep and Death Metal music I dislike, but can't say I have the passion of hatred for them. It consequently amazes me the number of people who say they hate classical music. Here and now I'm going to give you proof that classical music defamers unknowingly like the genre. There are 10 pieces that even the classical-haters secretly love, so if you ever meet said person, you can shove this article in their face and sing as loudly as possible DA DA DA DUUUUUUMMMMMMMM!
#1
Beethoven: 7th Symphony (2nd Movement )
I would start with the famous Beethoven 5th Symphony, and those unmistakable four notes; but that's more predictable than Charles marrying Camilla. So instead I'll make my point with the 7th Symphony. This is where you say in your mind 'urgh, I don't know that one...' - but you're wrong. The big speech in The King's Speech, Knowing and X-Men are just three well-known films where the music plays an equal part to the action on screen.
When Beethoven premiered it, he conducted it himself. The audience was so stirred by this movement that they immediately shouted for an encore before they could finish the other two movements.
The Gospel according to RDCE, Chapter 1 - "He said unto himself that it's impossible to not be moved by this piece of music" - here endeth the first reading.
#2
Grieg: In the Hall of the Mountain King (from Peer Gynt)
When I hear this piece, I immediately feel nauseous thinking about my body being thrown into a G-Force that it's absolutely not designed to take. For those who don't live in the UK, that refers to the theme park 'Alton Towers' who use this piece by Grieg as a theme tune. Covers by bands such as The Who and Electric Light Orchestra throw this piece into the minds of anyone who is older than me, and for those who are my age, the brilliant Inspector Gadget theme tune clearly 'borrowed' a few notes from Grieg. It was initially written for a theatrical scene featuring trolls, so it works perfectly in films that need characterful music; Corpse Bride, Funny Games, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Beetlejuice and Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian for example. But the best use has to be the fabulous film The Social Network, as you can see here.
The Gospel according to RDCE, Chapter 2 - "Thou doth cannot listen to the constant acceleration during the piece and not be thrilled akin to a rocket up one's buttocks" - here endeth the second reading.
#3
Pachelbel: Canon in D Major
A bit like waiting for paint to dry before the obligatory second coat, this piece for me is tedious but necessary. When I was a church organist in my reckless youth, I played this at every wedding and heard it in every song produced in the '90s. Pete Waterman described it as "the godfather of pop music" because the chord sequence has been copied so many times.
Don't Look Back in Anger by Oasis, In My Life by The Beatles, Streets of London by Ralph McTell and the Pet Shop Boys song Go West are all pieces which stole the Pachelbel. No one knows precisely when the Canon was written, (we think somewhere between 1680 and 1706) but like the Birdy Song and politics, it'll annoy us again, and again, and again.
The Gospel according to RDCE, Chapter 3 - "This little ditty must contain herewith the most famous bass line ever" - here endeth the third reading.
#4
Bizet: Habanera
Habanera is officially called "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" ('Love is a rebellious bird'), from the opera Carmen by Georges Bizet. Despite its popularity today, the premier in 1875 was a failure; the audience found the risqué plot, with its robbers, gipsies and cigarette-girls, too hot to handle. One critique wrote, "What is really wrong with this Carmen is that there's not a good tune in it". The theatre ended up giving tickets away to fill seats. Bizet was devastated and died of a heart attack three months later aged just 37 - poor sod. Little did he know that not only would his opera be a world success, but 100 years later his tune would end up in films like Pixar's Up, Bad Santa, Superman Returns and even TV programmes like Doctor Who (I'll never understand why that title doesn't have a question mark in it...) and Glee.
The Gospel according to RDCE, Chapter 4 - "Thou shall listen to this sensual music and start wiggling one's hips in rhythm"- here endeth the fourth reading.
#5
R. Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra
The famous opening of Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-QFj59PON4) (Thus Spoke Zarathustra) is titled 'Sunrise' and has become iconic in pop culture since film director Stanley Kubrick used it in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Those of you who love the Toy Story films, will notice the opening of Toy Story 2 uses the Also Sprach theme to introduce their main character, which to me, sounds like a crazy sex toy; Buzz Lightyear. It's also used pretty much anywhere you need a heroic moment. Wall-E, thirteen episodes of The Simpsons, Britain's Got Talent, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb and Zoolander all realise the power of Strauss's composition.
The Gospel according to RDCE, Chapter 5 - "Thou shall remember the next time one is in the cinema and a heart-wrenching, Grand-Canyon like epic-ness begins playing underneath a scene, taketh a moment to remember Richard Strauss and his 155-year-old tone poem." - here endeth the fifth reading.

Dear thezcmme,
Co-Mod: It’s actually gotten quite a bit shorter since I started here.  It now takes somewhere between two and three months.  It’s a great time to get your asks in!
(Please don’t use that as an excuse to spam our inbox, though.)
Tumblr media
Dear thezcmme again,
Co-Mod: Good question.  At this point, I actually sort of hope they don’t make one, since it practically exists already.  I guess we’ll just cross that path when we get to it.  (Get it?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Previous Letter)
Dear Trearoos, guquis, and skibot99,
Co-Mod: Thanks for letting me know...again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Link in Letter)
Dear skibot99,
Co-Mod: Hey, at least you’re not obsessed enough to try running the blog yourself.  Sometimes I wonder if I spend too much time talking and writing about Ace Attorney.  It’s a beautiful series, but there’s still real life to think about every now and then.
I agree that that Godot/Jake parallel is shaky at best.  For one thing, Jake’s a lot more friendly overall, and for another, he didn’t lose a lover like Godot did (unless there was something between him and Lana we don’t know about).  One big comparison I can see is that they both lost someone close to them and made some irrational decisions as a result, but I sure wouldn’t have picked up on that comparison on my own.
And if I could rewrite one thing about Ace Attorney...I’d add in a beach ball after Mia’s murder.
Tumblr media
Dear skibot99 again,
Co-Mod: If you’re referring to the Frequently Asked Questions page, I’ve already encouraged them to add their answers, so hopefully we’ll be seeing them at some point.  If it’s the Mod letters you’re referring to, I’ve been doing my best to get every new Mod’s responses in, but they all live in different places, so sometimes I have to push ahead without them.  Not that I want to, of course, but just so you guys won’t have to wait any longer than you already do.
Mod Paups: If you are talking about the faq, I forgot about that...I'll try to get on it though!
Tumblr media
Dear BadnesstheHuman,
Co-Mod: We are not having this conversation.

Mod Maya: ;-;
Mod Paups: no!! I love all the mods they are all cool ^w^ but thank you ;o
Mod Kristoph: Well...

Dear Anonymous,
Co-Mod: Very sorry about that!  One of the other Mods forgot to cut out the name and icon, so I replaced the picture but forgot to change the names in the letter.  I’ll try to keep a closer watch on that.

Dear Inferno,
Co-Mod: Yup.  I can’t be the only one who wants to play Dai Gyauten Saiban and its sequel for himself.
Mod Maya: Only hopping on to say that I would sell my left leg for DGS, thanks,
Tumblr media
Dear scineven,
Co-Mod: I first discovered the Ace Attorney series when I read Matthew Taranto’s miniseries Turnabout Kirby in his webcomic Brawl in the Family.  This eventually made me curious enough to check out the games, so I watched some playthroughs of the first game and before long, I started falling in love with the characters, the game’s unique mechanics, and the series as a whole.
I don’t remember many details about how I found this blog (I remember that it started with a Google search), but I’m sure glad I did.  I was thrilled to see that the Mod (the only moderator at the time) made an effort to respond to every letter that was sent to it, and even more thrilled when he finally answered one from me.  It’s quite a treat to be able to talk to characters in a series like this one, even if it’s actually a fellow fan pretending to be them.
I started playing one fan case for a short while, but never made the time to finish it up.  I’ll be sure to share my thoughts I have about any that I manage to make it all the way through when I get around to playing them.
Mod Kristoph: I was first introduced to Ace Attorney through the fan made video series Turnabout Storm, a crossover between Ace Attorney and My Little Pony. (Yeah, I’m a brony. Come at me.) I just gradually got interested in the series from there.
I’ve played several fan cases online. I’ve even come up with my own top 10 list of them. 10. Turnabout Trickery, 9. Turnabout Substitution, 8. Turnabout Imperfect, 7. Turnabout Tomorrow, 6. Curiosity of a Turnabout, 5. Turnabout Curtain, 4. Turnabout of Courage, 3. Two Sides of the Same Turnabout, 2. The Dragon’s Turnabout, 1. A Turnabout to El Dorado. Plus, the fangames Contempt of Court and Conflict of Interest are great too.
Thanks for the welcome!
Mod Maya:
1. When I started college, Dual Destinies was just releasing. My new friends also happened to like video games, and both happened to be Ace Attorney fans, so they were really telling me to get into it. I tried the demo, absolutely adored Athena, and here I am today.
2. I have not! I do want to write my own one of these days.
Mod Paups: I discovered the series when I stumbled with a Damon Gant sprite!! It made me so curious because I loved (and still love) his design that I started playing the games.
As for fan made cases I haven't actually played any but I remember that when I was a bit younger I made one fan case! It was more of a story than anything else.
Tumblr media
Dear Certainly Bobby Fulbright,
Co-Mod: I know this wasn’t addressed to me, but...

Mod Maya: Ty! I’ve not been keeping up lately but I’ll do my best~ I love anything nutella flavored! Though I’d die to try something sea salt flavored--Glaceon for sure, any fox-ish pokemon are all my favorite. (My best friend’s favorite is also Snorlax!)
Mod Paups: I know this isn't for me but I can't help but answer! I love loove chocolate, bubblegum and cookie flavors! As for pokes I have too many but my favorite types are in this order: Ghost, Dark, Bug, grass, water, psychic and fighting!
Mod Kristoph: Thanks for the welcome! I think I’ve been off to a slow start but I’m getting the hang of it. My favorite ice cream is definitely mint chocolate chip. Delicious! And my favorite pokemon type is probably ghost.

DGS for the fandom ask. KH as well if you feel like it.
Tumblr media
DGS my beloved series ;__;
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most)
Barok, but he's also the plmm, so I would have to give this to Herlock otherwise.
Herlock is just the best Sherlock adaptation ever. He's so gender goals, his outfit fucks, his theme fucks, he himself does not fuck tho he's so low-key lame, he's a single dad, he's an idiot, he's an genius, he's an ADHD icon. I love him.
I have so many thoughts about how his life with Iris must've been pre-canon and even more gripes with how their early relationship in canon was portrayed. How much did this sensitive man cry over the years when Iris didn't take his last name? What I wouldn't have given to see Herlock cry on screen when Iris finally called him 'daddy'. Also what I wouldn't have given to defend this dingus in court.
scrunkly (my "baby", character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped)
Gina my baby, I was immediately drawn to her the second she popped up on screen. Not too into the "petty criminal reforms by becoming a cop" trope but it really warmed my heart seeing Gina in better fitting, nicer clothes with a dog and able to finally smile easily, but still steals Ryuu's money lol. She deserved a softer situation than what she had before. Also her theme fucks. (Yes I'm aware Inspector Lestrade is a Holmes reference I just still don't like that trope)
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave)
Gregson! I love him, even despite his crimes, he was such a fun detective char and really funny. It was also an interesting change where he wasn't like clearly on your side vs the prosecutor (like Ema) or felt equally loyal to both sides (like Gumshoe), but he does noticeably start to warm up to Ryuu and Susato as the story progressed. Also be became a begrudging dad, we love character growth. I still miss him.
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won't shut up about it for a week)
Maria my girl. Her design is Peak Goth Victorian Goals, literally a plague doctor. I'd argue Maria's one of the most morally sound chars in the entire duology too. Never once does she compromise her integrity in favor of someone she loves (Kazuma, Barok, Susato) or out of fear (Gina) or for an authority figure (Mikotoba, Dr. Sithe), which combined with her seemingly genuine apathy towards the law is so fascinating. Like she was perfectly made to copy Barok or Kazuma's mistakes but she didn't, and not because she didn't love her mother as much as they loved Klint & Genshin, but because she cared too much about her work, and then even further she held no bitterness towards Ryuu, Susato, or Barok for indicting her mother and still adores her mother as much as before even after learning what she did.
I would love another DGS game or anime or something, and Maria getting more screentime is one of the top 3 reasons for it.
poor little meow meow ("problematic"/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave)
Is there even a greater Poor Little Meow Meow than Barok van Zieks? Like, he was molded in the plmm form, his mascot is literally a cat, he's a depressed pathetic (affectionate) adult man, his one hobby is wine, he's a snarky bitch but secretly very compassionate like a total tsundere, his office Looks Like That, he's dripping sex appeal but is so repressed and ace. He starts out very problematic but shows genuine attempts to change by the end, and as I mentioned above I live for character growth. Barok is my fav prosecutor in the entire franchise; he legitimately helps the defense in every case even when he's still more of an antagonist, he's a tough opponent without using scummy tactics, his design fucks, his theme FUCKS, his speech bubble is personalized, he doesn't attack the defense... (which honestly was only funny with Franziska and Godot, and even with Godot it wasn't as funny), his big objection gif is showing off his flexibility by slamming his leg on the fucking table while holding a chalice of wine, he's the only char that they finally said "yeah this mofo's drinking alcohol not juice" --- I could go on.
One of the things I hate most about the fandom (aside from how often people tag their hate posts with the actual char/ship tags) is how many fans just straight up pretend he didn't spend the last 2 cases changing. Like yeah anyone can hate him for whatever reason and no one is obligated to forgive him for his many grievances up until then, but pretending he didn't change at all? Come on.
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason)
Skulkin Brothers, they'd be great in a plinko machine. I wonder which one would fall faster?
In a more sympathetic/happy torment? sense then Kazuma hands down. And it wouldn't even be difficult, it'd just be like Susato enlisting Gina & Iris' help to kidnap him from the prosecutor's office, drag him to the celebration party at 221B Baker Street, and forcing him to hug it out with his husband Ryuu. (Which should've happened they should've hugged after 2-3 and again before leaving and also Kazuma should've been at the party. ;___; ) also the mental image of 3 cute little girls kidnapping an adult man much stronger than them is beyond hilarious, esp if Barok saw and did nothing to stop it.
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell)
Klint van Zieks my beloved. He's already in superhell for eating the rich crimes. I love you, you ruined everything, my bi poly slut (affectionate)
As for KH I actually barely know shit about it outside of memes, I only ever watched my bff play 1&2 and that was back in middle school haha. All of the Org. XIII are interchangeable for plmm & the horse plinko tho

Hi! My name is SonicAdventure. Usually, I don’t do covers, at least not the ones you can see below. I’m a mastering engineer by trade; that is my hobby, my passion and sometimes my job. You’ve probably encountered one of my remasters before, after all, I collaborated with Heidl numerous times: he does the covers, I do the sound. But that hasn’t always been the case.
A decade ago I started out doing everything on my own, including the covers. The reason for designing them was simple: I wanted to print them out and put them on the shelf alongside official releases. Just so that my own versions wouldn’t look stupid or “home made”. Since I lack any formal graphic design training I always had to look towards the work of others for inspiration and technical advice. Because of that I became quite adept in copying designs. Luckily, I have a little taste, an additional help has been encountering Photoshop more than 20 years ago.
I don’t think my covers are any good; they’re boring, bourgeois and only serviceable – if at all. You see, I don’t prefer to do them, to me they’re just a necessity and I’d rather work on the sound. Oh, and the work involved… ugh. Re-arranging vertical designs so that they would fit a square format, cutting something out, cleaning something up…, I’m just a lazy bastard who doesn’t want to spend time with this. Because good design (something that looks gorgeous and is equally functional) is work, plain and simple. Something I’m – most of the time – not willing to do. But Poltergeist has always been one of my favourite movies, so maybe this was a reason to create so many covers.
I saw it for the first time on July 5th, 1986 on German TV. It was a Saturday night, my parents were away on some birthday and I was home alone babysitting my little brother (who was fast asleep). I wasn’t 11 yet and was completely blown away. The movie was an emotional rollercoaster, I was terrified and deeply moved, all at the same time. It would take a few years until I realized that my conflicting emotions were partly caused by the brilliant music Jerry Goldsmith composed. Imagine my disappointment when I wasn’t able to buy the soundtrack, it simply didn’t exist wherever I looked. Remember, this was a decade before the rise of the internet, you couldn’t just order something. My parents however had a friend who regularly visited the U.S. and one day in 1996 I asked him if he could look for the soundtrack to Poltergeist while being away on one of these journeys. I forgot all about it and one day, when returning home from Uni, the soundtrack was suddenly waiting on the kitchen table. And it wasn’t just any normal CD, no, it was the first expanded treatment done by Rhino! I was overjoyed and to this day this CD is a reference for how I expect score expansions to be treated. It had everything beside all of the music: good sound (albeit a tad noisy), good artwork (for the front cover) and a generous amount of informative text within the booklet. And even though I’ve replaced it with the edition done by FSM 13 years later I simply cannot part with it. I’ll never forget the joy I felt when setting eyes upon it for the first time in 1997.
A few weeks ago I decided to remaster it, I’ve never been happy with the slightly timid sound of the FSM version. I also wanted to create my own covers. The official ones are well done and I like them, but I thought that I might be able to improve them or at least offer some additional choices. But you, dear reader, will be the judge of that.

#4: Poltergeist (Custom)
#5: Poltergeist (Custom)
The first five custom covers are based on original artworks created in 1982 for the movies’ promotional campaign. The original poster, used to this day in several variations, is quite iconic. It features a large black background with – much smaller – Carol Anne kneeling in front of a TV that receives no signal (something which younger readers won’t remember). Most home video releases have focused on this design.
Cover #1 [1] is based on the DVD/Blu-Ray variant which enlarges the TV/Carol Anne combination, adds a blue tint and TV lines. I just added the movies’ logo (the gloss effect was done by hand) and the rest of the information. Cover #2 is based on one of the SteelBook designs, while cover #3 imitates the design of the first LaserDisc. Since I didn’t have it in colour combined with high resolution, I colourized it myself.
Next is cover #4 which is an alternate design that was used predominantly outside the U.S. Since it, in my opinion, looks fairly anachronistic I decided to turn it into a vinyl cover.
Tumblr media
I also created a variant of the same design (#5) and gave it the Deutsche-Grammophon twist (something you’ll see again). I just love the big yellow DG emblem, it always looks classy, either old-fashioned or timeless (the typeface choices determin the assignment to a specific era). I translated everything English to German, going as far as calling the city of L.A. “City of Angels”.
But now of to the covers based on alternative poster designs, my personal favourites.
The first one (#6) was apparently designed at Universal for the “Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights“. I just love the idea that Carol Anne is now on “the other side” and therefore not sitting in front of the TV anymore.
#6: Poltergeist (Custom)
The next cover (#7) is probably the eeriest and craziest cover I ever made. It’s based on a breathtaking design by Orlando Arocena, whose art style is called “Mexifunk” and it pays homage to the “Dia De Los Muertos“. Since it was a vertical design I had to take it apart in order to use it, cutting it in half, enlarging the mouth and turning several parts into seperate pieces so that I could place them freely. A lot of work but worth it.
#7: Poltergeist (Custom)
Next is a tribute to… well, I don’t really know (#8). I wanted to use the artwork by Angga Agustiya and since it was drawn from the perspective of the son character Robbie and looks a little like naive art, so I decided to turn it into a children’s vinyl. The fake title reflects that intention, yet at the same time I reference my remastering by using the “Living Stereo” banner. Though an audio drama aimed at children likely wouldn’t feature the best audio fidelity.
#8: Poltergeist (Custom)
Cover #9 is based on a character poster by Sara Deck. It’s not ideally suited for the square CD cover format so I added a little structure (TV lines & stars). With Tangina Barrons (Zelda Rubinstein), yet another character from the film is featured on cover #10. It was created by designer duo WeBuyYourKids and features a nifty reference to “the other side”. Chairs moving on their own (sitting on a table) are shown on the next one (#11) which is based on a design by Adam Rabalais while coffins are a menace beneath the Freelings’ house on cover #12. That one was taken from the Mondo vinyl edition of the score, released in 2013. Again, WBYK designed the original artwork, I just combined back and front and colourized it.
#9: Poltergeist (Custom)
#10: Poltergeist (Custom)
#11: Poltergeist (Custom)
#12: Poltergeist (Custom)
Cover #13 is based on a design by Godmachine, heavily altered, adding rays of light and several layers of different blurs. You may think it doesn’t have anything to do with the movie yet it is showing “The Beast”, similar to how it looked when it emerged from the cupboard. Initially, it wasn’t even part of this set, I did it at the last minute while I was writing this blog post.
#13: Poltergeist (Custom)
The last cover was done specifially for heidl. I found the design while I was searching for images I could use and since he has created so many fantastic covers for Stranger Things 2, I thought I would add one more. It was probably done by a Netflix team, at least it was used to promote the second season of the series and it’s a nifty tribute to the original.
#14: Stranger Things 2 (Custom)
This concludes my series of Poltergeist covers. Heidl has been instrumental in getting these done, he constantly provided suggestions how to improve them, what typeface to use, etc. Without him, I couldn’t have done it. He is the best teacher one can imagine: he points out flaws, suggests ways to get rid of them and then leaves you alone. Brilliant. A big thank you goes to heidl who provided me with the chance to show off. I hope the decline in quality compared to his work is not too big, I wouldn’t like him to lose viewers because of some sub-standard artwork done by some know-it-all like me.
“Poltergeist (The Deluxe Edition)” by Jerry Goldsmith Hi! My name is SonicAdventure. Usually, I don't do covers, at least not the ones you can see below.

New work is well represented this season with no fewer than seven shows having first productions in the Queen City. For Curtain Up!, Buffalo’s unique and premier celebration of the start of the new theater season, three shows took bows.
Roommates, by Mark Humphrey, opened at American Repertory Theatre of Western New York (ARTWNY), and put an in-debt investment accountant in a room with his loan shark’s goon/safekeeper for a fraught twenty-four hours. “There are two major themes at work here. One is how people are not necessarily what they seem at first glance, and [another is the way] some people feel they can treat people anyway they want. What gives them the right?” says Humphrey. “This show came from a place in my psyche that, while not black, is definitely a dark shade of gray. Is it based on a true story? You decide.
Stage adaptations of films are commonplace, but an adaptation of a local film is rare—but that’s Killer Rack, in which a woman with breast augmentation unwittingly becomes part of a plot to destroy the world. Film director Gregory Lamberson described Alleyway Artistic Director’s Neal Radice’s musical adaptation as “hilarious and faithful to the original script.”
And Donna Hoke’s comedy, Sons & Lovers, played at Buffalo United Artists, and showed audiences how well the power of denial can hold unpleasant truths at bay—until it doesn’t. “I had a short comedy, “Best Interests,” in BUA Takes 10: GLBT Short Stories in 2015,” says Hoke. “BUA artistic director Javier Bustillos observed that my writing voice was a good match for the lead’s acting voice, he offhandedly suggested I expand the ten minutes into a full-length vehicle for Caitlin. I laughed it off, but, when he continued to encourage it, the idea took hold. I’m so glad he asked!”
In December, get festive with member Michael Fanelli’s yuletide satire Miracle in Levittown, which cuts right to the heart of American hypocrisy as the young heroine of the iconic Miracle on 34th Street gets Santa to turn her into an African-American to test the racial exclusion policies in postwar Long Island.
“The untold story of Miracle on 34th Street is that African-American girls could not dream of a new house in the suburbs with a swingset in the backyard. The United States Government stacked the deck against African-American housing in the twentieth century through blatant discriminatory statutes and more subtle but cynical means such as denying FHA backed mortgages to real estate developers who desegregated,” Fanelli previews. “Zazu, the main character of Miracle In Levittown is seven years old when she reads a contract her parents must sign for their new house that stipulates that they are banned from selling it to negroes. Outraged, she asks Santa Claus to turn her black so she can understand segregation better. Santa, a Puerto Rican, grants her wish.”
The play features three ghosts: FDR (Ghost of Segregation Past), Moses (Robert Moses, Ghost of Segregation Present; this is 1947), and Runt (Ghost of Segregation Future, Donald Trump with his sidekick KaKa Conway). “It was the time and the place to dramatize how urban ghettos originated by design, not by accident,” says Fanelli. “The story fit in with Miracle on 34th Street once I realized that the house where Suzie, Doris Walker, and Uncle Fred were moving to was in whites-only Levittown.”
In February, ARTWNY presents An Inch Short & A Day Late, by David Moran; the play explores the inner workings of a band as it tries to finish the last song of their upcoming EP. The season finishes with The Rain Dogs Project, a collection of new short plays based on the music of Tom Waits, that will include member Bella Poynton’s
“It’s poetry set to a sci-fi-ish soundscape,” says Navigators Artistic Director Bella Poynton. “It’s based on the Waits song, ‘What’s He Building,’ and the play is post-apocalyptic. “Basically, two young women are stuck in the basement of their home after nuclear fallout, but they keep seeing a neighbor outside who has a radiation suit going in and out of his house, and other houses on the street, but never theirs. They want to know what he’s building, and why he never comes to their house. It’s a comedy and very fun and feel-good.” The evening will also feature Guild member John F. Kennedy’s “Funeral Water.”
Also in February, Alleyway presents the winner of the 2016 Maxim Mazumdar Competition, member David Alan Brown’s Beginning Again, a lyrical play about healing. “The three, seemingly random interactions of this play were active in my imagination for a long time, but I didn’t really know what it was supposed to be about until I happened upon Roland Barthes’ Mourning Diary, which broke my heart,” says Brown. “After further research on his work and the tendencies of grief, I began to weave together story, social criticism, symbolism, and other aspects of Barthes’ teaching. I highlighted these with powerful emotional moments, relishing how live performance can affect an audience. I’ve attempted to illuminate human struggle through artistic query, giving voice to the frustrations of life after tragedy, and, hopefully, offering a sense of hope and peace to all of us who experience it.”
Other new plays tend to crop up unexpectedly, but even seven in a season is proof that the new play sector is alive and well in Western New York. Keep an eye out for e-blasts about Playwright Mobs!
