New Year's Ask Game for Fic Writers 🤍
I was tagged by a couple of pals to do this a few days ago, and i'm finally getting to it! thank you @ardent-fox @suzy-queued @energievie 🖤
To close out 2023…
1) What fic did you have the most fun writing this year and why? Or, if you can’t decide, what was most fun about writing this year for you?
the most fun i had was while writing honeycomb, because julissa @heymrspatel and i got to play with our horny psychic link again and it was the BEST.
2) What’s a scene/story that you finished and felt “wow, I really accomplished that, that actually went so well”?
let them see. writing ian and mickey fucking with an audience and making it believable was HARD. i'm still not sure how well i accomplished that, but i'm proud of it.
3) What helped provide the most inspiration for stories, if anything? Was it poetry? A song on repeat? A gorgeous gifset? A walk outside? A book you read that made you want to change everything? Whatever it was! Tell all.
i listened to infinite granite by deafheaven on repeat. i just think it's beautiful, and it's good music for zoning out and imagining. lyrics from that album sometimes serve as working titles for my fics before they get real titles, and in fact i did name a fic after lyrics from that album. waiting in the light
4) What is something you want to share about what you’ve written this year? A particular line, a comment that made you feel really good, a scene that was difficult to write — you get to choose! What do you wish someone would ask you about when it comes to what you’ve written?
i just wanna talk about feels like a dream. setting the atmosphere for that was so fun. i wrote it so quickly, i could see it all so clearly in my head. i wanna talk about ian sucking on mickey's tongue. i wanna talk about the moment ian puts the collar on mickey and how he gets him to tell him why he wants it. i wanna talk about how ian talks to him and takes care of him and makes him feel owned. i wanna talk about how mickey sucks ian's dick like he needs it to live. i wanna talk about how important the atmosphere is in that moment, how even they felt like they didn't want to move too quickly and disturb what they had built up that night. i wanna talk about how mickey's so sleepy while ian's fucking him that he wonders if his orgasm is going to jerk him awake or make him even more sleepy and blissed out. oh god, and mickey calling ian daddy throughout. i just think it's sexy. i wrote it in september but i posted it at the very end of kinktober when people were likely just burnt out on it, but it's there and it's dreamy and it's kinky and i like it.
And to start off 2024…
1) Do you have any writing/creation goals for the year? What are they?
yes! i just want to post more fics. i still want to participate in kinktober and i want to format it differently this year. i want to write a multichapter au as well.
2) Is there a fic or idea that you’re really excited to be able to continue to work on in the new year (shout out to my fellow fic writing folks who take forever to finish wips, sometimes it’s nice to be able to continue working on something even if you wish you’d gotten it done! Now you get even MORE time with it!)
yeah, that multichapter au idea! i had written quite a bit for it and i HATED the direction it was going in and it made me want to scrap the whole thing. i had a helpful conversation about it with bee a few weeks ago and i've got new ideas for it, so really i want to tackle that. it just feels daunting because i've written thousands of words that i feel like i need to get rid of. i basically need to start over to make it work. but it'll happen!
3) What’s something new in your writing you want to try/are going to try? A different writing style? Different fandom? Darker works? Fluffier? Longer or shorter?
baby's first au! also i think i mentioned this before but i wanna try writing destiel smut. like deeply emotional, feral, inhuman, otherworldly reunion fucking. we'll see if i ever get to it though.
4) What’s something you love about your own writing that you will continue to appreciate in the new year?
i think i'm good at writing physical sensation. i find smut really fun and i think i'm pretty good at it. not just because i'm good at describing physical sensation, but for all kinds of reasons. i think i'm reasonably good at keeping ian and mickey in character while they're doing all kinds of things, and i like that. i think i'm good at setting a tone and atmosphere. i don't know man i just like it to be a sensory experience, and i think it often is.

I was tagged by @bright-thorn in a quick get-to-know-you game, and what the heck. I've got time before a meeting, so let's do this!
Tag nine (9) people you'd like to know better!
Last song: "Doo Wop (That Thing)," Ms. Lauryn Hill. Today was our first day back in the classroom for pre-planning, and I have a million things I need to do before I have kiddos in front of me on August 1st. And because one of the things I have to do is check transcripts for all of my rosters-- gotta make sure that my seniors aren't missing any graduation requirements, gotta keep an eye out for ELL and 504 and IEP and gifted services, gotta check that no new transfers have duplicate credits, or aren't placed correctly-- I was working my way through a lot of old favorites today as background music. Stuff that would keep me awake and focused so I wouldn't miss anything critical-- and that I knew well enough for it to not be distracting. So The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill fit the bill and was my last selection of the day.
Currently reading: Oh, like four different things. The City of Brass, by S.A. Chakraborty, which I started reading ages ago and then got distracted by life, so I've started over. A Memory Called Empire, by Arkady Martine, which I started reading during the early summer of 2020 and absolutely adored-- and then both my parents needed major surgeries within the same week, and a week later my gallbladder gave out on me-- and in the chaos and haze of am-I-dying-or-is-my-gallbladder-infected, I couldn't concentrate on it. So I've started it again as well, and it's so brilliant. I love it. But it does take me immediately back to that godawful summer in a very visceral way, which makes me somewhat uncomfortable. A couple of historical murder mysteries. And I've just started The Anarchy by William Dalrymple, which is about the role of the British East India company in South Asia.
Currently watching: Literally? I've got the replay of Stage 3 of the Tour de France Femmes on right now because I couldn't watch it live. (Stupid having to work for a living.) In the greater sense, I've just finished watching The Law According to Lidia Poet on Netflix, which hits all sorts of buttons for me, because I do love a good period mystery show-- especially if it's not set in the UK. Plus the costuming is fabulous. I'm two episodes into the second season of Shadow & Bone, but-- eh, I dunno. I really am only interested in one or two of the storylines, so I'm not sure I'm going to finish it.
Current obsession: I am so sorry to everyone who has suddenly been thrown into my rabid cycling fandom, especially if you started following me for, like, Andor stuff or whatever. I'll be somewhat normal again soon, I promise, and will only occasionally reblog GIFsets of Wout van Aert doing Wout van Aert-ish things until it's time for the Vuelta. What you have to understand is that this is not a new thing for me: I've been following men's pro cycling in the form of the Tour de France since I was... twelve? Thirteen? That's when I got seriously into long-distance cycling for a while, there. And while I'm nowhere near as fit as I used to be and the week-long cycling journeys my dad and I used to do are now well out of my reach, I still watch cycling obsessively. It used to be just the Tour de France, and then I started following riders and related folks on various social media platforms, and then started listening to podcasts, and then I started watching the other Grand Tours, and the past several years I've also gotten sucked into watching the spring Classics, and now I've also fallen down the rabbit hole of women's pro cycling, too. And as an obsession it is at its most all-consuming every year during July, which is when the Tour is on-- and I live blog the whole thing. (Not on this platform, although I've considered it.) Like, I do detailed narrative stage-by-stage write ups. The document for this year's total recap wound up being 46k words long, so. Yeah. Definitely an obsession, and it's one that everyone around me just has to kind of learn to live with during the summer every year.

Wow, am I finally getting to this show? The last episode comes out in a week so this is perfect timing for me technically. I'm still pretty caught up on Beyond Evil and Lee Dongshik/Han Joo Won but I believe the show can hold my attention still.
I've seen so many gifsets of this and clips and GeminiFourth tweets/tiktoks as well and it's all been soooo adorable, so I'm expecting to really like this.

These fucking internship interviews with like OA -> phone interview -> 2 hour-long interviews is really fucking me up because the further you get into the chain, the more you hope you did well and will get the job but that doesn't mean shit :> you could still be 1 of 10 or 20 in that last step and you could just be not chosen

This made me giddy and the OSTs are great and there's clear effort from the cast and crew. I liked the dynamic between the characters, whether it be how Gun and Tinn took turns being bold and shy or the parent-child relationships or Chinzhilla band. I might increase the rating by 0.5 if the characters continue giving me brainrot.

I think I've said it in one of my asks, how much we love to read other people's thoughts and opinions (= you screaming about how much you love the character/person or show or scene or whatever in the gifset) on our gifsets/content. So please always reblog stuff and yell about how much you love it, it's the best thing to see :) I know some content creators don't like when people add stuff to their gifset in the comment section and not in the tags. So it changes the layout/style of the original post a bit. I don't mind if people add their thoughts in the comments section and it's defo no reason to send hate to other bloggers.
What I personally dislike tho is, when people reblog my gifset and add negative tags to it (like I fuckn hate this show, or the character sucks). Why reblog something you don't like, that makes no sense to me. That's actually the only reason I don't like people reblogging my gifs. Thankfully most of the reblogs I get are lovely and happy reblogs which makes me happy too :)
Anyway, I think I got what you mean and I think you also understand my points. Thanks for talking about this and clearing things up. if i described for you the week i've had you would NOT judge me for kidneyposting and anyway this isn't really about the kidney, it's about Craft. so. in the NYT piece larson dismissed the centrality of the kidney to her story by saying that saying her story was about a kidney donation was "like saying moby dick is about whales." which like on the one hand i get it. but first of all it's kind of a funny example to use, given that, of all the literary classics in the history of america, moby dick is perhaps the one most famously about the thing on its surface. like, i haven't read moby dick, but as i understand it, reading moby dick requires you to engage with a truly colossal amount of whale content.
which i thought was just sort of funny and petty UNTIL i read the actual story (available here), which as i have shared before is really quite ungood. i don't know that i would call it terrible but there is nothing in it to impress, in my view as (admittedly) an asshole and a huge snob. but i have come to think the idea that the story's not really "about" the kidney, and the idea that this is analogous to moby dick not really being "about" whales, is actually relevant to the story's failures. because: the story, to me, is bloodless, hollow. some interesting ideas in search of literally any reason to give a shit. and i think that maybe what explains this is that larson thought she could write a story about a kidney donation without writing a story about a kidney donation, because she didn't really want to write about a kidney donation; she wanted to write about Race and White Savior Dynamics and Class and Conflict and Unlikeable Narrators. and those are all good things to write about, but the thing is, you can't write a story about them by writing a story about them, because that's just not how stories... work. you can't just convey an abstraction. you have to give the concrete, the specific, the tangible, the grounded, and then, you know, weave it in such a way that all the other high-level stuff emerges.
and i don't think you necessarily have to START there, i am sure people navigate this process in many ways. (also i'm thinking about, like, realistic fiction like this story, probably there are weirder more experimental ways to do this that could be successful. but u gotta know the rules of ur genre & realistic fiction is as much a genre as any other!) but you do have to like... do it. i am not sure what kind of Big Things moby dick is "actually" about because, again, i haven't read it (my impression is depression and homosexuality, but that may be selection bias among the fans i know), but to take a literary classic i have read that just wants to teach you so many things about subjects close to its author's heart, of course les miserables is not "about" the paris sewers, or the battle of waterloo, or whatever. but its astonishingly specific detail to those things is not like... like, it's actually very much NOT incidental. it's actually very much an essential part of the reading experience and also part of how the book achieves its aims, both aesthetic and, like, moral (not all books have moral aims but les mis SUPER does). you can't just say "i want to make this point and create these emotional experiences." you have to build a world that actually does that, which involves attending to your details. (failure to do this is also how we get e.g. the force awakens, a movie made to be viewed as gifsets.)
anyway. so like, larson's view that the kidney doesn't matter... is part of why the story sucks, imo. the story gestures towards these Ideas, but it doesn't build a world, with texture and clarity, in which they just... happen. and reading the story you can tell she is someone who has been instructed on the importance of Specific Details. but she didn't think that the specific details of HAVING A BRAND NEW KIDNEY were worth getting right, or giving any kind of shit about, or in any way potentially relevant to the details of how someone might feel about their kidney donor. (in any direction! someone on twitter defended the plausibility of the narrator's bitterness by referencing a family member who had received a donor kidney and had a brutal experience with anti-rejection meds and other complications to the extent that they kind of regretted not choosing death when they had the chance, which sounds believable to me and would have been an interesting angle to take that would have alas required five (5) minutes of actual research.) so, idk. i am very unimpressed by a writer who has these kind of thematic ambitions but lacks the understanding of fiction to see that you can't write to a Theme. you gotta write about people and stuff! (if you are writing realistic fiction. other stuff maybe works differently.)

Hey axelle! I hope you're doing well. The reason I'm writing you today is cause I had some ideas bouncing in my head and would really appreciate if you had some advice with regards to it seeing as you are indeed our queen. I have a small little blog and sometimes I make some content on it however many a times I get really discouraged if my gifsets don't do that well or seeing some other creator post a similar gifset and seeing it bode real well with the audience. One more thing that discourages me is some of the creators are so dedicated and so consistent and so amazing at their work that I feel like I cannot even make a dent in the community with my small posts. I know it's all stupid and we're all just having fun but I would still like some advice if you have on how to deal with this stupid shit.. Ignore me if it sounds like I'm just ramble-ranting here. I felt this message in my soul! everything you've described, I've felt myself at some point too. and I don't think you & I are the exception at all tbh. for some advice... frankly it took me SO long to let go of the metrics. basically I had been a small ass blog for so long, and then over the course of a month I more than doubled my following count and knew growth that I'd never experienced before, which frankly got to my head. I was OBSESSED with metrics, so much so that even the period when my blog was thriving the most (during why r u, 2gether & my engineer airing back to back) I was CONVINCED that a post getting 500 notes was flopping. like WHAT lmao?? now if I get 500 notes I'm overjoyed :') so anyways just saying that all this stuff, notes, people being more successful than you... frankly none of it matters. I know it might not resonate with you but this is NOT a race. you're making stuff bc you want to, and YES I'm the first to understand than it not getting the reception you wanted SUCKS. I go through it every time I make a post nowadays. that being said, even if you're posting less than others, you're still important to the fandom. we're each a brick that makes up the foundation of this fandom, no matter how successful we are, how many things we create... but if you really want to gain a bigger following, you've got the solution in your hands anon. I have never grown more than when I was posting a minimum of 15 gifsets a week (yes I was insane lol) and giffing every bl series that were coming out, so if you wanna grow it WILL take a lot of time and effort to do so. also nurture the connections you have with other blogs bc reblogs are key to the success of a post. but keep in mind that today I'm giffing only the shows I care about, I'm posting about 5 gifsets a week, people don't reblog me as much, but I'm way more fulfilled & mentally stable than when my blog was thriving. so what I'm saying bc this is getting long is, if you wanna grow, productivity & consistency are key, as well as connections. BUT being big on tumblr is really not the end all be all of life. I'm not shitting on it bc my blog has allowed me to have so many great interactions with people over the years, and THAT I would never take back. but the extreme insecurity, the hours spent working on gifsets rather than spending time with my family & friends, the drama... THAT, I don't regret leaving behind. so good luck with your blog anon, and continue making content that you enjoy making and are proud of. I hope someday people realize your value to this fandom and you achieve the success you desire <3

i knew the spn fandom collectively sucked j*nsen a*kles dick but i never realized it was this bad like i've seen a million posts rapturously defending his acting during the cas confession scene and maybe 2 posts praising misha. these people need to put some respect on misha collins. 😠
hi friend. i’m not entirely sure you’re in the right place for an ask like this, but um... well.. are you asking for my opinion? i know i’ve made a fuckton of destiel gifsets in the last couple weeks but i’m a newbie to this fandom, and not even a percentage of a percent of 0.00000001% invested in the ship or the show as i ever was in teen wolf BUT i have been watching on my own for many years and i do have an opinion about acting (idk if i’ve mentioned it but i started off in theater for undergrad and it’s all i ever really wanted to do tho i never did it....so it kinda mutated into nit picky criticism if u get my drift). ... . POINT BEING.
okay. so ... i do enjoy both of their acting in a general way- jensen’s soapy teen drama past is clear but he’s rounded out dean so well over the years that it all fits seamlessly anyway cuz who can separate the two... and though it works 98% of the time, he is a bit predictable. watching almost 9 seasons in under a month does offer some perspective ngl (also i think ive probably seen more posts denigrating his acting than praising it, but i guess i follow different people than you...)....
but i feel like misha has developed differently as an actor and his style has changed in various ways over the years, but i never really sat back and took stock of it until that scene last week because like... i mean.... ugh. i don’t wanna upset you but. i didn’t like it. it kinda looked like they used the wrong eyedrops? it was hard for me to concentrate cuz i was a bit distracted by those giant puddles on his face at first. stripping down the monologue though, it kinda felt..well.. you know what actually? maybe it was just the bad writing. I’ve always enjoyed his acting. he does deserve praise. i just... yea. i was cringing a bit the whole time :/ we really really shouldn’t judge those acting choices though, because as we can see thanks to this ask- it’s all in the eye of the beholder. you thought he did an amazing job. i’m sure lots of other people do too. myself i’m straddling the middle opinion (if i watch it a few more times, which i will because i have yet to gif it, my opinion may- nay probably will- change), and yea i’ve also seen posts making fun of him or leaving out his well-earned kudos, but i try not to involve myself in that kinda drama anymore (esp since i’m not really in this fandom and only started blogging about the show recently because i wanted to gif it).
in general i always enjoy both of their acting, and i agree they both deserve praise and respect for doing their best with the script they’re given. i think i just kinda wish the whole thing was presented better. like. there coulda been WAY better buildup withIN the episode. and the season. for it all to come down to this outburst? cas shoulda been on the literal verge for awhile. i know the majority of the fandom has seen it for a long time, but as an outsider and someone who hasn’t ever been in fandom or really ever shipped them (despite watching all 15 seasons multiple times over the years), it did seem carelessly written into the script. which is just unfair for both the actors and their characters.

I don't know if you can help me with this, but I didn't know who else to ask. Do you know how tumblr works? Their algorithms specifically? Because I've had a fan blog for a character from a specific show for about 5 months and I'm having real trouble making it grow. My gifsets often don't show up in the tags and idk if it is a glitch or if it is bc it's still a pretty small blog. I try to post new gifsets regularly, but frankly with work and life and all, I can't gif more than 1 set per week 1/2
The fact that my gifsets barely get any notes (again small/new blog and sets sometimes don't show up in the tags) does not help my motivation either. I don't know what to do. I know you've been around here for a while and I think you're pretty aware of things that changed over the years. Do you think I need to post even more so that my gifs will be recognized? Or is tumblr just that random and I can't do anything about my gifsets not showing up? 2/2
Nonnie, I’m really sorry, but there is no solution to this problem. Once upon a time, Tumblr was a well-run site and users actually reblogged sets. Tags worked and everyone was getting tonnes of notes. Then, around the time Yahoo bought it, changes were made to the site which made the tagging system worse, users slowly started to like rather than reblog (I honestly think one of the biggest issues with this was the change in dimensions) and now notes are very hard to come by. Back in the day, I used to be able to get thousands of notes on GIF sets, sometimes even tens of thousands. These days I’m lucky to get to even 500 notes.
My advice would just be to GIF what you love and try not to worry about notes. I know that can suck sometimes, because we like to feel rewarded for our work and everyone likes getting notes, but you will drive yourself crazy if you worry too much about that. Just get to a point where you enjoy making GIFs for yourself and things will be easier :)
