Reputation to Midnights and Final TPD Predictions

With 4 days until the Tortured Poets Department and two lines of lyrics we have so far, here are my thoughts on how we got here over the last 5 albums and final predictions for what's coming on Friday:

2016 changed the game - reputation era and long-term bearding

Many people might disagree, but I think the year 2016 changed a lot of things for Taylor. Without going into detail about snakegate, a possible failed coming out and scrapped album and the presidential election, her music has had a different tone ever since reputation (and I don't just mean sonically). As someone who writes a lot about love and relationships, the way she was writing about them changed from fairy tale love, pining and heartbreak to forever/long-term love, commitment/endame, 'us against the world' sort of love. And I do think she wanted to put that album out in 2016 but can't really do that when you're newly single and writing about wanting forever with someone... so in came Joe Alwyn who became the free pass for writing songs about long-term relationships, marriage and kids for the next six years. But LWYMMD (the song and the mv) made it pretty clear that this was not her first choice. Whatever happened, she had her agency taken from her, and she was mad about it. She may have made one hell of a comeback, but rep Taylor was on a revenge mission, and she has been ever since. Now, add to that the very same people foiled her coming out (possibly) a second time in 2019, I can well imagine the tortured poet that Taylor became during the pandemic with all that built up anger and misery pouring out into the folklore and evermore albums. And my guess is that with the plan to re-record the first 6 albums came an idea of how she could possibly get her revenge after all, which brings us to Midnights and TPD.

Midnights and Tortured Poets Department - Reflection and melancholia

Midnights had a similar tone to me than what we have seen of TPD so far: introspective, sombre and looking back on happier times and missed opportunities (hence the whole '13 nights throughout my life' concept). There is a lot of wondering about what ifs and regrets and always with a sense of vengeance in the background, which shows how Taylor clearly holds a grudge and has a hard time letting things go that have hurt her. And this continues in the two lines we have seen from TPD so far. The 'full eclipse' gives me love blackout vibes and this line

is so similar to many folkmore and Midnights songs where she talks about not being able to move on from a traumatic event (failed coming out *cough cough*). So, this album clearly continues the theme of reflection, regrets and vengeance, but with an additional touch of reckoning or impending judgment. I've seen some people say it seems like Taylor is putting someone (else or herself) on trial, and both the evidence file esthetics and the legal language she has been using in the hidden words puzzle on Apple Music have been feeding that theory:

She told us back in February she'd be entering all of her defenses and her muses into evidence, so is she the one being trialed and we are the jury? Or is she presenting evidence in her defense and accusing someone else? I initially thought the former, but now I'm thinking it could be either or both.

The songs will tell the story of the most painful times of her life and we will be able to decide if she chose her suffering or if the context/industry is to blame. My favourite swifties pointed out this morning that the ‘un-recall’ lyric is a parallel to CIWYW “I recall late November”. So what is she trying to forget? The 2016 election. The start of the love blackout. Much like the ‘full eclipse’ lyric. They almost had it all but then her plans got foiled and Tr*mp was elected which forced them underground. And where did she run off to? London. And what’s track 5 called? So long, London…

So, a lot of this album so far gives 2016 vibes. And I’ve said in a previous post (here) that the visuals seem very rep-inverted. Black vs white and the half yin-yang ☯️ in the logo. It’s looking likely that this is going to be the reflection on that time where her vendetta originated before she goes for revenge. And I’m not trying to clown but the rep parallels haven’t stopped:

This QR code mural in Chicago is very rep-cover coded and leads to a website that has the same 321 error message as the TS website the night of the Grammys. The message then was red herring. And not to sound too crazy, but I've said from the start that something feels off with this album. The absence of proper promo or merch is still weird. And would an entire album as a red herring be too crazy? Probably. But is she a crazy woman? Definitely! 😉

Solos suck ass.

I can't believe a day came where i had to click uninterested on posts about Jimin or Jungkook.

The algorithm works this way the more you interact with something the more posts about the same thing/person will show up more. You all know i'm a Jungkook and Jimin stan so naturally my algorithm picks up that i'm interested in posts about them individually or together, which also means the algorithm suggests shitty posts the same as the ones i've seen earlier.

There's this one post i've seen and i'm not gonna share it cause really both parties are disgusting but this made me think.. This is why you should be mindful of what you say because later it can backfire, and the only one receiving hate from all that is the members.

Jimin and Jungkook solos are in this constant war getting back at each other and they're both setting up Jimin and Jungkook for hate. If you're a solo congratulations do you want me to give you a cookie for that? You go be a solo in your own bubble and talk about your fav all you want, but don't forget that you're a solo so keep other members names out of your mouth, don't go thinking that by dragging other members your fav will be happy with you. Thank you for all the efforts you do for the member you are solo'ing but that's all, that's literally all there is to thank you for.

Another thing i wanted to mention since some people felt the need to bitch about it. And i'm with @kkhluvsbts in this one, you are entitled to your own opinion about something as long as you stay respectful, if you feel a bit disappointed that you can't see JK being credited on any song in GOLDEN, fine whatever those are your feelings and no one can invalidate them, but going the extra mile to diss him about that?

A gentle reminder that Euphoria was not written by JK yet no one was barking about how it doesn't associate with him or how it doesn't represent him or how it doesn't mean anything to him, and to begin with as per Namjoon's words it was supposed to be a Jimin and Jungkook subunit but they decided to go for Jungkook only.

Jungkook didn't write Seven either but because he felt a connection to it he chose that one song, it's also the way he interprets each lyrics those are personal to him. When he was interviewed about Seven he made a slight distinction between the MV and the lyrics and this to me at least showed me how Jungkook sees the lyrics for himself, not how YOU perceive them or how YOU understand them.

Should i also remind you of the poems you google when you're an X mood and you post them because it defines how you feel at the moment? Should we invalidate your state at the moment because it wasn't written by you? Should we just pretend you are lying about your feelings at the moment cause you chose to post words written by someone else?

Also since y'all are being smartasses you do realize that Jungkook didn't start working on his album very early right? I do hope y'all weren't just hypocrites pretending to care about him when you don't even realize this. Writing your own songs can take a lot and i mean A LOT some people have been writing the same song for YEARS not just weeks or months, do you think JK would be happy to give us something he didn't have enough time to write properly?

I just want to understand what's so wrong with connecting with words that you yourself didn't write? When Jungkook chose "There for you" or "Best of Me" for his GCFs he didn't sing any of those yet he felt a connection with them and felt like they were the most fitting for what he was trying to show us.

I don't know just how long this fandom will keep on being dominated by immature brains. I come here everyday hoping i'd get inspired to write something cute about my biases but end up being disappointed with the shit happening. Y'all need to get a life istg.

Woosan live in a van and are low on money, but San has always been a good fighter which is why he has the brilliant idea to become a boxer, and Wooyoung has the brilliant idea to bet on those fights so they not only win prize money but bet money as well. The catch is Wooyoung always wants to fuck San for a job well done, and he only gets to cum if he won. (Might make this a sort of stand alone series because I have many ideas based off of this comeback!)

The van's tinted windows were fogging up, no doubt from the explicit activities that were happening inside. Wooyoung smirked at Sans comment, slowing down so that he didn't go over the edge.

"Oh, your close are you?" Wooyoung mocked, reviling in the way his answer made San whine loudly and shake his head.

They worked their butts off so they could afford the van, since that sleeping in an old abandoned garage wasn't so safe they were even mugged once! Wooyoung was waiting tables while San worked the day shift at their local gas station and once enough money was saved up, they got a mini van so they could live in that and lock the doors at night.

Soon after Wooyoung had the genius idea to get San into boxing since he was already good at it, and while San fought Wooyoung would bet on the fights to try and make even more money! the plan was going well so far and they almost had enough money for a down payment on their own apartment!

"Have you ever fought against Seo Changbin?" Wooyoung queried, scrolling through the mans instagram while slurping up instant ramen at the same time.

"No I don't think so, why?" San had his own cup of instant ramen, since most nights it was all they could afford for dinner.

"Well it's gonna happen next week, I got in touch with Bang Chan his manager and asked if we could have a match!"

"Sounds fun, I'll hit the gym in the morning"

"I might actually join you, do some light weights or walk on the treddy" Just because Wooyoung didn't know how to fight didn't mean he didn't wanna be healthy.

"You tryna rope me in for some gym sex? get all worked up and then work me out?" San joked, nudging him slightly.

"HA! you wish" Wooyoung nudged him back, but then gave in and gave San a sweet kiss which may or have may not lead to a little make out session.

When next week rolled around, San was more than ready for the fight! He had gone to the gym every day to train, getting strong as he heard Changbin was going to be a tough opponent.

The crowd was going wild as they both entered the ring, intense rap music playing in the back ground to hype everyone up as if they weren't already hyped.

Wooyoung could be seen off to the side sly-ly taking money from others as he was betting on san to win, and if he did win everyone who said he wouldn't, wouldn't get their money back.

"You got this baby, kick his ass!" Wooyoung was cheering from below, just as the bell rang to signal the start of the match.

Changbin was good, San had to admit, with the corner of his mouth bleeding and left eye pulsing from being punched there, Changbin was defiantly good.

"Water" San croaked out as the halftime bell rang, walking back over to Wooyoung. He sat down on a stool as water was squirted into his mouth, some not making it and dripping on his clothes but he didn't care.

"Where does it hurt?" Wooyoung got straight to it as they only had 5 minutes.

"My left eye is pulsing, my left shoulder kinda kills and wherever you see blood I guess" San breathed deeply, closing his eyes as Wooyoung tended to him, a wet rag wiping all over to get rid of most of the blood. Wooyoung gave San's left shoulder a small massage in the small amount of time they have left.

"I love you, and I'll be proud of you no matter what ok?" San leaned down to kiss his lips in thanks, always basking in his lovers praise.

"Love you too Woo, so fucking much" and with that the bell rang again signalling halftime was up.

It turned out San was better, somehow landing punch after punch after punch. So many punches he ended up knocking Changbin out. The crowd went wild again after San won, chanting his name as he was given the belt.

No one was more proud of San than Wooyoung though, smiling heavily as he basked in how much money they won. Sadly more people thought that San wouldn't win as he didn't win last time, but that only meant more money for them when he eventually did win so in the end he never let it get to him.

"So proud of my kitten, you did so well tonight" Wooyoung praised as he was once again pounding away.

San could only moan in response, as words were too hard for him at the moment. He gripped at the sheets and whined, no longer being able to lay still.

"aw does my kitten like this hmm?" Wooyoung continued to lightly stroke San's cock with one hand and use the other to pinch one of his nipples.

I've seen stans claiming issue #67 gets to take place after Frontiers and so there was a huge time skip of months based only in the fact Sonic called Amy to lunch as they apparently spend a time without meet each other (???) (Is not it some long running gag in the games that the characters can take long weeks or months to see each other again, thus being already used to this?)

But why?? Why is it so important to set this passage of time?! Do they are really desperate in make the link between games and comics? Because that really makes the comic's narrative sound and look pretty worse:

1- It would mean then that Surge and Kit has been a far more time hidding in Eggman's abandoned base than you would expect, that makes them look even more lazy losers than they already do and clash a lot more with the image of Thirsty For Revenge the comics insist in pass, since they moved NOT a finger in almost half a year (???) (Idk the exact time they want to claim and much less I care) But it makes the arguably near 0 effort of them become a surely negative effort.

2- So then, Blaze is still in vacation in Sonic's world??? Really? She just forgot her kingdom? Are the Sol Emeralds just in Sonic's world as if there was no risk of the universe to collapse (okay, that's a more overkill than what the game really states) if the Chaos Emeralds are reunited and put close to them? Just like that? As if she wasn't all afraid of get some vacantion in the start?

3- Then Mimic has already gone in missions with the DC for real, right? He's bonding with them, right? Surprisingly, there were NO real volunteers after all this time before Surge and Kit finally met Clutch, heard his plan, came to accept his conditions and just gone to the Restoration HQ by the front door, (assuming any of these step even passed by Surge's father head) right? Or, if had, then they left... Geez, guess a bossy rude bitch with a rock hard head can't be a inspiring leader after all, what a surprise, no?

4- The only positive thing of this time skip ideia is that it explains why everyone is so chill of the drooling psychic walking around as well as make no objections to him about use his powers... And why Silver is so chill after the whole fiasco... Buuuuuut, now he's acting Just Exactly the way Lanolin accused him to act when she made the scandal to kick him out the Diamond Cutters (Not only the absence of security helmets or vests, he's playing with the food of the thousands of hungry kids he meant to help, Ian Flynn, a master of self sabotage)

Btw, sorry for this rant, feel free to just ignore if you prefer... And sorry for bringing the Lanolin discourse all over again...

Now that I think about it, it's been a year since Frontiers came out and IDW still hasn't referenced it. Even considering that it takes multiple months for issues to be finalized, I'd say enough time has passed that anything Flynn and Stanley have written since, say, December 2022 has been released. So huh, not even a small reference to that talkative moon, or anything to reflect the supposed new life goal of the gang. It's like it's not canon after all :)

Anyway. Time skips in IDW are indicated. This is how we know that the camping arc takes place months after the beginning of the MV arc because the apocalypse lasted the whole winter, and how we can say that it's complete bullshit because Sonic should have been dropped dead from exhaustion. No time indication, no significant time skip. This is a moot point for me, so I don't have much to add.

Alright, I've been compiling my thoughts about the most recent OnlyOneOf comeback, "dOpamine" from the album Things I Can't Say LOve for a few days now, since it came out 2024/01/10 (it was still the 9th my time, but still). I've got pages of notes, and I'm getting ready to start (the essay will be a different post).

I wanted to start though with some fun observations about "dOpamine" as an MV and how it's doing so far in the grand scheme of things.

Upcoming Posts: thoughts on the MV/album description, individual song posts, breakdown of themes in the album and how it connects to narrative of queer love/desire/acceptance

(Even if this isn't the essay yet, it did get long, so putting it behind a cut for the sake of the tag.)

"dOpamine" is effectively a performance video with some drama shots, and this is something that has been peppered through OnlyOneOf's MVs from the start, with "time leap" which "dOpamine" definitely visually calls back to. Other examples include "chrOme arts/hearts" (discussed further below), "zurui onna," "suit dance," and to some extent "gaslighting" and "dOra maar" (which never got an MV but has a dance/performance). I know that I was hoping for a story driven MV, and I still have some hope that we might get a second MV for this mini album that might give us that, but I've also accepted that this is a performance MV.

[Warning for flashing lights in "chrOme arts" if you've not already watched it]

Of their recent MVs this probably aligns the most with "chrOme arts" in terms of what the MV is doing. It's set in a relatively empty warehouse, there's queer lighting, it's dance focused. Unlike with "chrOme arts" where there's a few distinctive moments of touch in the dance and MV, in "dOpamine" they entirely are dancing independently. This is intriguing especially in context of the initial video teaser to "things I can't say lOve" that has several of the members touching Yoojung in a very queer desire sort of way.

Where "chrOme arts" has bisexual mood lighting, "dOpamine" has it's laser light show during parts of the dancing that is in the colors of the MLM/gay flag:

This jumped out at me on very first watch, and I know that I mentioned it at the time, but I found it really striking. For all that we have that bare warehouse vibes, and no touching in the MV. With the lighting and the dancing and the lyrics and the album description, it's still a very queer MV.

I do love that this MV has some really strong parallels to "time leap" in terms of presentation and setting because it's interesting to see that feeling almost of going back to the start but knowing more, being more prepared now. This is something that has been talked about a bunch in their songs and narratives, so I'm really interested to see if it will tie in to more of what they do in the upcoming weeks and months. Especially since they have talked about having had a long arc of work planned out from debut (which yes we know did get a little derailed/changed after libidO era, but did include libidO), and I wonder if this feeling of looping back to "time leap" with the narrative of queerness and then moving forward through that is something that was planned long ago. I have a lot of connections back to previous songs and MVs that I noticed as I was doing my more in depth examination of the album, so I'm having some feelings about this connection. Also, give "time leap" a little bit of love:

Something that is exciting for me with respect to how this song and MV are performing is that "dOpamine" is drawing far more attention than any of their previous performance style MVs have. It's at over 1M views on YouTube after only 4 days, and while I don't have strong feelings about YouTube views in the grand scheme of things, it's interesting in the context that a lot of the performance MVs have never broken 1M no matter how good/loved the song is among lyOn. I think that it's really telling how much undergrOund idOl and their tour and just the past few years have grown their fandom and name recognition that a performance MV without their incredible storytelling is doing this well for them.

OMT!Tails: W-Whose Sonic are you?

???: That would be mine.

Mobiverse Tails came out from one of the blocky sections of rubble, coming to see his younger counterpart.

OMT!Tails: A-Another me?

MV!Tails: Surprised, huh? I would be too, seeing a younger version of myself in a lonely place like this. But that’s not important right now. Somebody told me you were here, and I’m getting you back to your companions.

MV!Sonic: What are you even doing in a place like this?

OMT!Tails: I've... been through a LOT, and... it's really hard for me to be the hero my home needs with so much tragedy...

MV!Sonic: Heh. You're not the only Tails who felt like that...

OMT!Tails: I guess you ended up dead too...

MV!Sonic: Yeah… at Mammoth Mogul's slimy hands, no doubt. But hey! At least an old mentor of mine helped me learn how to communicate spiritually. Still gotta get back at her for beating me in chess.

OMT!Tails: H-How are you both able to stay so optimistic, even after a painful loss like this...? You make it look really easy, as did S-Sonic...

MV!Tails: Well… we recovered. After Mogul's downfall, our Mobius found peace and gave the position to a new Mobian. Sure, it wasn’t easy, but it showed us that a new legacy and heritage can pass on, and that could happen to you. Your Sonic may be gone, but it’s not too late to keep your home safe.

OMT!Tails: I could... still be able to inherit my Sonic's legacy?

MV!Tails nodded.

MV!Tails: Sonic has always told me I should believe in myself. He’s taught me many things and is the reason I’m here today. Sure he may be gone, and Mammoth Mogul left many scars not only on me, but the entire population on my Mobius. But that doesn’t mean I should cower in fear like I’ve always done when I was a kid. I should always stand up for myself, and that’s what Sonic would have wanted for me and my friends to do. Me and Antho live on his legacy, everyone on my Mobius has.

MV!Sonic smiled proudly, happy for his sidekick coming this far.

OMT!Tails: Heh, I guess so. I... really appreciate you being here for me.

MV!Tails: No problem! Now let's get moving. Your friends are waiting for you, and you've got work to be doing.

OMT!Tails: Of course. I mean, I know I can't do this particular feat on my own. I'm gonna need all the help I can get.

???: Did somebody say "help"?

Behind them was the silhouette of another hedgehog, with some other allies behind them.

MV!Tails: So, are we ready to save the multiverse?

The silhouette slowly revealed itself... as Antho.

A comic strip for the Mobiverse lands on the pile alongside the other eight trinkets thus far.

"Alright, let’s back it up from here. My name is Anthony Miller the Hedgehog, or just "Antho", for short, and for the past year or so, I and a group of friends have become the new heroes of my Mobius. But it wasn’t always like that you see.

You see, I was just your average normal nerdy hedgehog until something with a super collider changed my appearance and gave me some knowledge of a multiverse or something. Oh, and I’m pretty sure there was a T-Rex-. Oh no, wait! That was added to the script to make it more dramatic.

Anyways, aside from that. It was also the day we lost our Sonic… and I saw it with my own eyes… thanks to that monster, Mammoth Mogul. Ever since then, the Dark Ages happened, and I was never the same again. But not until I stood up and took vengeance against Mogul himself and since then, I’ve restored the faith of Mobius, met new friends and allies, some of which I can now consider family, and am now living in our beloved hero’s legacy.

But despite that, it's still kinda hard work, and I sometimes feel like I can’t live up to Sonic’s standards and how he was the saviour of us all. But deep down, I know he's proud of me, and having my friends, family and the main cast by my side has helped.

I can’t be the next Sonic, even if some otherworldly hedgehog says otherwise. But this is my world and my rules. And I’m doing my own thing, whether you like it or not."

envy is a feeling very familiar to me. even with the people i love most, if they're more liked or better off than me in any regard, i might have moments of extreme hatred towards them. it always passes, but in the past i've acted on those feelings impulsively or in a moment of lapsed judgment..

all of that was to explain how i see his betrayal, basically. him reacting in shock when seras tells him she enjoyed his presence was def the "oh i fucked everything up" moment, and him continuing on regardless could've been apathy that i also tend to feel after I've also fucked up; i think he's mentally protecting himself against the trauma of losing basically all he had in the moment. also just. yk. he probably thought since he went this far he might as well. but 1. he still could've just stopped 2. shhhh

i see this from the perspective of dark! walter, with some lines being both literal and metaphorical. i see "all we have is eternity" and "now with a new start" to be literal in the sense of his turning. "my name is unknown, something i've never told" is metaphorical, representing him lying about his true thoughts and feelings, maybe not even having a good idea himself. also a nod to lack of identity issues in bpd. "Nothing in me resembles a human heart" is both literal and metaphorical since he's no longer human, but he's also lost the ability to care for those around him now that his plan is already in motion.

he's just such a sweet lil cinnamon roll with the voice of a devil. his smile got me first, cause hello? look at it and tell me you aren't melting!!?? (being considered the embodiment of sunshine by all my close friends/family of course only heightened the adoration I had for him). I truly and utterly adore him sm 😊

I denied it for so so SO LONGGGGG and I'm so ashamed that I did because the moment I was like "fuck, yeah, this is the one," I felt like I could breathe properly for the first time since becoming a STAY LOL.

I had a little dramatic moment with a Chan Bias Friend of mine about the whole ordeal (thank you again for Syd for holding me through that crisis bc lord it was a big one!), and told her that I feel like I've been wearing beer goggles for my entire journey as a STAY and I just now took them off, and the world seems so much clearer now.. everything makes so much more sense LOL. We always talk about how your bias is most like you and your wrecker is what you look for most in a partner, but it's the complete opposite for me. Changbin truly has my entire heart and I could not be happier knowing it's him that's protecting it

❣ What makes them your bias?

This is a loaded question, but I'll try to explain it as clear and concise as possible.

I fucking adore this man.

So so fucking much.

It's so true that you don't find Stray Kids in your time of need, they find you. Changbin found me. 6 months or so ago, I had an "oh shit" moment where I kind of realized that it's been Binnie all along, but I wanted to deny it and stay loyal to Han because he was my first and I was determined to keep him as my #1.. but after my Binnie moment, I started going HARD. I watched everything. interviews, skz-codes, live performances, tiktoks, vlogs, skz-talkers, the entirety of Kingdom LW then all the way back to music videos and the bts for the mv's. I became obsessed, not just with all of the members, but with Binnie. His personality is so so sweet and so genuine and so raw that I couldn't help but gravitate towards him. His duality, his personality, his stage presence. It was overwhelming in the best way possible. He's become such a safe space for me over the course of the last year and a half that I've been apart of the STAY community and been a fan of the group. His encouraging words, his gentle and loving presence, his loud and confident personality. All of it.

He's unknowingly helped me come to terms with my eating disorder and helped me stay on a healthy and positive path in my journey to self-love. He taught me the importance of our bodies and how to properly take care of the body you were born with. He taught me how to stick to my principles and never stray from my own beliefs, no matter what people around me have to say/do about it. He taught me how to appreciate the family I was blessed with, and that yes, sometimes it is nice to just dance with them in snow. He taught me confidence and self-acceptance in ways no trainer or therapist ever could. He's helped me accept myself, helped me realize that life is not about the journey, but who you spend the journey with. He's taught me to Never let the fear of being myself, stop me from being myself (this one is so fucking huge and so fucking important to me, you'll never understand). He is such a huge inspiration for me. I can't get over how much I love him and how much I owe to him and his existence. I see posts and tiktoks all the time about how Changbin is like everyones own personal happy pill, and he truly is.

I could go into very specific details with video timestamps, specific lyrics, tiktoks and moments where my love for him was solidified more and more, but I feel like we would be here all day and I want to keep this post short and sweet.

So yes, I adore Changbin and his presence in my life. He is truly an inspiration in so many aspects and I just cannot imagine a life without him, or the rest of SKZ, in it.

❣ Who is your bias wrecker?

For the longest time possible, it was a Seungmin. The little menace he is. It was him, and then I had a moment where I slowly starting veering off towards Minho, cause he's like, the king of menaces and Seungmin is just his little menace-in-training. Then it went back to Seungmin after watching most of Kingdom: Legendary War and seeing his performance in I'll Be Your Man and Love Poem.

THEN as of the most recent two comebacks, Hyunjin shows up and is like "hello I'm here too. I also require your attention". But truthfully, I think I've come to accept the fact that I'm a Changbin bias, but OT7 wrecked on the daily, because each and every member wrecks me in different ways.

Bangchan with his astounding hardwork and adoring personality. Lee Know as the king of menaces/ultimate butt hunter. Hyunjinnie with his passion and love for all the art and beauty in the world. Han with his dedication and lyrics that always hit so close to home. Felix for his rays of sunshine, demonic voice and heart of gold. Seungmin for his shy and guarded personality but the prince following in the King's foot steps. and INNIE?? BABY BREAD??? No baby bread ain't a baby bread anymore, he's a freakin' Daddy Toast and I'm uNWELL

Hannie definitely holds the top spot for bias wrecker (hello he was demoted from #1 so it only makes sense for him to fall to #2), but the remaining 6 are fighting for the title on a daily basis. It's very concerning LOL

❣ Which member(s) are you currently obsessing over that aren't your bias/bias wrecker?

As of right now, I cannot for the life of me get Channie out of my fucking head. Idk what it is lately, but there's just something about Chan that takes up all my attention. Maybe it's the excessive amounts of fics I've been reading and writing for him, but he's just someone who captivates your attention and absolutely requires you to keep it on him. It's frustrating but I'm also not complaining.

❣ When did you first discover this group?

I first heard of SKZ by the boyfies little sister who is a die hard kpop fan. When I first met her when she was 11 or 12, she was a big fan of BTS, and I tried to bond with her over Kpop, although it was something I never thought I'd ever get into, and she was like "well, BTS isn't for everyone. Have you listened to SKZ?" and she showed me Gods Menu and like one of their early SKZ Codes, and I was like "alright, they're pretty cool. Demonic voice sunshine boi, fast rapper #1, fast rapper #2, maniacal little puppy, ethearal fairie who likes to touch butts, best leader, tiny baby with large hands and pretty artist." but after that I didn't really give them a second thought.

Then, in January of 2023, I started a new job with my lifelong best friend who I hadn't caught up with in a long time, and she was obsessed.. she had already been apart of Stayville since maxident, and she got our other friend into them as well, so when we spent every break and lunch hour together scrolling through tiktoks and listening to her gush about how amazing these men were, I was like, alright. I'll give them a shot. If my best friend adored something so much, who am I to not give them a shot and see what all the fuss was about.

She showed me the MAMA 2022 performance and from there, I was hooked.

❣ Have you ever been to one of their concerts?

I have not. I've seen so many concert videos and tiktoks of others living out the ultimate dream and I am so so jealous. I really hope they come to Canada on their next tour. I will be absolutely devastated if they don't, but I am fully willing to road trip down to any state at any time to see them live. I will not miss another concert. I will not.

With Kazui's MV dropping almost three weeks ago, I've been thinking a lot about some personal stuff. (Long rant coming under cut) (it's not even really about MILGRAM)

TW for suicide. And like. Not in the context of MILGRAM.

Back in October 2022, I had made the decision to end my life before March 2023. And from October to March, I held a journal where I would write something, anything, each day. It was a countdown. And one of the first things I wrote in this journal (on D-138) was "Kazui's song probably won't be out before March, it's a real shame". His song was the one I was the most hyped for when the T2 songs preview came out.

Things happened, I went to the psych ward for a while, and in the end I got to be alive on July 26th for the release of "cat". What I felt looking at my computer screen waiting for the premiere to start was undescribable. It's at this moment that it truly hit me that I was still alive. I got to listen to this music. I got to see the continuation of a project I love with all my heart. And I will be alive to see its ending.

During trial 2, there's obviously been a lot of talk about suicide (Haruka, Mahiru, Kazui). And since it's a topic I've been very much aware of in the past months, it hits close to home :

• When Haruka's VD came out, I was in the same position as him : preparing my own death. I hadn't chosen a date yet but I was already thinking about ending it all. His VD just made the suicidal thoughts louder. The possibility more real. It felt like it was worth considering.

• Then Mu's VD came out and by supporting Haruka's promise, she validated my own feelings. "She's right", I thought, "it's my choice and my choice only, so people have no business trying to stop me. Plus I've made a promise to myself. I shall keep it." Of course there are so many voices online and offline saying the contrary, begging suicidal people to reconsider, to seek help. But I wouldn't hear them anymore, I'd cling onto any sort of validation of my feelings. Finally someone understood me. And even if they're not real, their lines have been written by real people. It means that someone out there is trying to understand my point of view. In a way, even though it pushed me further towards death, it was the first glimmer of hope: maybe if I opened up someone would understand and help me in a way that actually works for me.

• Shidou's MV came out while I was in the psych ward. While I was slowly starting to recover. While I was considering living as an option again. Just like him huh. How appropriate. Yeah, maybe there were new people in my life worth living for, people I wanted to see happy. The other patients. Not my patients, unlike Shidou, but still. People who are hurting and that I want to see heal.

I'm going to skip over the rest, but you get the idea : MILGRAM accompanied me through one of the most, let's say, emotionally charged parts of my life. And that may be why I feel so strongly about the characters of this project : I see them, and I want them to get better.

I wish MILGRAM was a psych ward instead of a prison. These "prisoners" don't need to be judge, just like being judged for my decision was the last thing I needed. No. What I needed, what they need, is care. They don't need to be interrogated, they need to be listened to. They don't need to be restrained, they need to be in a safe environment, so that won't endanger themselves or others. They don't need to be punished for the way they've lived up until now, they need to learn how to live going forward. Just like we all do.

They're not murderers. They are people who committed murder. That's not the same.

They're human. At least they're very much human to me. If only human beings helped each others. So that people can find ways to live happily without hurting others.

We don't need more prisons, we need more public service. We need solidarity. Mutual aid.

I've been waiting for Kingsleigh to do a MeMe cover since seeing the Bring It On one. And I'm fucking feral about it stop sleeping on this. Like these lyric choices-

Gotta highlight my favorites

Visceral amazing wording. Just grabbed me by the throat and didn't let go to be honest I heard this and froze like great amazing.

"Rooted deep inside my own anatomy. In every heartbeat, I cheat who I am."

Very fun line that calls back to Mahiru's Mikoto has cheater vibes comment in the timeline.

"I won't forgive accusations when I know- I am my own salvation. So, just fuck all these false allegations!"

Yeah, fuck lies and provably true allegations because we see you beat people with a baseball bat throughout the visuals of the mv. The dissonance between the lyrics and the visuals of the video are truly highlighted through this translation choice. That creates this feeling of fuck is what I'm seeing true or is this the truth. I mean we saw you do that shit but uh... This coupled with the line "The truth won't ever be denied." Really just made me go bro you doing okay about a situation I know far too much about.

I was curious though and a later lyric answers my you doing alright bro question well enough.

"Help me! Hey, help me! God let me get out before this all burns down."

The severity of the situation really hits here.

Like just wild a fun time from beginning to end. Amazing that I get to have two good MeMe English covers. These lyrics while hit and miss when they hit they really hit. I was listen to this one like this makes him seem to forgiveable and if this is what the subtitles said when MeMe came out I would've voted this man Innocent. See this is why I take in information from all angles and genuinely love seeing people's takes on the lyrics especially when I can listen to it like yay more music. Plus, as the person who wrote this much on Mikoto

I am taking what MeMe covers I can find (which isn't a lot) and looking at every possible interpretation. Which I will enjoy doing the whole way down. If anyone wants to say that's too much well I don't think it is in fact I think it's too little I need a larger sample size more people need to cover MeMe and Milgram songs in general. If anyone wants to make Milgram covers do it do it this is the sign do it doesn't even have to be covers.

However, you want to show love for the project the most important thing is showing it in a way you're comfortable with but this I appreciate this there's only so many times I can listen to the same song and with three difference versions of the times I can listen to it have tripled. This is so much fun to me.

I LOVE your passion for them. It oozes. It's so nice , right? To actually care about comebacks for real. I've been Atiny for 4.5 years and I'm still excited every single time! They're incredible.

Their songs match my tastes so well. Their performances are legendary. It really is nice! Even a few days after the comeback I'm still not at all bored or disinterested - generally by now I'm so sick of hearing the same few songs or watching the same choreo that I just give up 🤣

(Apparently I still have a lot of feelings so I'm cutting this for the sake of my followers' dashes lol)

Today I was able go to go a cupsleeve event in my city and the support was overwhelming. I've been to a handful, usually around 50-100 people max -- Even for bigger groups. But today there were probably close to 200+ people minimum. For a good 2+ hours we had a line looping all through the tea bar - from the end of the vendor tables, around to the order counter, then out to the sidewalk and looping around the side of the building, it was insane. Even when my friends and I packed up to go there was still a line heading up to the counter.

I was amazed and it was so sweet to see, esp for a group that I know is less popular in KR - I genuinely don't get it (I mean, I do - not big 4 means people don't pay enough attention - but from a talent standpoint, it's baffling).

My first MV was Guerrilla - my friend and I watched it and sat in genuinely stunned silence for a good 5 minutes afterward. It blended so many of our favorite musical types into one really cohesive package and I couldn't believe it. And every subsequent song - even their softer summery ones (Utopia, please, it's so cute. And Eternal Sunshine - I could cry).

It's been a very very long time since I've heard a group that so perfectly vibes with everything I like in musical styles. (I don't actually know that I have found one before Ateez tbh; even my biggest groups have always had a handful of songs every comeback that are just... Meh.)

Plus the general talent in terms of intense choreography and vocals - they really are top class performers. And then adding in all the AU stuff - I love complex aus, I love storytelling, and these guys do it in such a cool way; and the production value of their mvs?! From an itty bitty company?? Genuinely elite.

My friend Drea went to their AZ show and Chicago shows last year; she had barricade during Chi and has shown me her videos; on top of YT recorded videos - the energy is unbelievable - you can just feel how hyped everyone is. I almost sprung for LA Kcon this year bc Ateez, SKZ, and Taemin are gonna be there; but none of my group are going and it's far too expensive on my own 😭 (plus it's right before school starts up for my gremlin and my own Korean classes start up, so I really shouldn't be traversing the country >.<).

We have plans to all try for the next Chicago concert though; there's about 7 of us for sure, maybe a few more, so carpooling and splitting hotel fees will make it easier - aside from the apparent bloodbath for tickets lol.

Also did you see the stats that dropped today? We broke our own previous record for Spotify streams! Generally I don't care about those, but I'm excited to see the small wins for a group that deserves so much 😭

Orange is the new black? 🧡🖤

Thoughts on the colour orange in the TS universe

I've had some thoughts on the increasing number of orange things over the last few months and what they might mean. This is most definitely a work in progress, so please add to it with your own ideas and observations.

(Orange is currently not a colour associated with any TS album, for clarity, the colours are: Debut-green, Fearless-gold/yellow, Speak Now -purple, Red (self-explanatory), 1989-light blue, rep-black, lover- pink, folklore-grey/silver, evermore-brown (though white is also used in eras tour colours), midnights-navy blue)

The first prominent appearance of orange was in the LWYMMD mv: The prison jumpsuit in the golden cage and the door in the vault during the heist scene.

A person in a cage and a vault within a vault - makes me think orange represents imprisonment. Orange is the new Black was a very popular (and very queer) TV show about female inmates back in 2017. But in Taylor's case it was black (rep) is the new orange 😉

Since then we have seen orange appear on the Man wall, and all over the Eras tour visuals. Let's go chronologically. The Man mv came out in 2020 and gave us this famous wall:

There's the word karma in black in the middle, and in orange at the top at 12 o'clock. Orange and black again. But we are not aware of an album called Karma, so what's it doing on the wall amongst all the stolen album titles? I'm well aware of the karma album theory... was this something that was 'imprisoned' in 2017? Taylor does cut the wings off the plane and spray paints reputation on it...so, I'm in no position to say it isn't true. It might be. But if this was unreleased music, then I don't think it would have been part of the masters sale. It was never released by Big Machine so they couldn't have sold it. I have a different theory. The black karma is the process that ties all of these re-recordings together, her act of 'defiance' (as she calls it in the TIME article) against the man who bought them from under her. That's why it's in the middle, so karma 'comes back around' if you're going in a figure eight. And the orange karma at the top is a collective term for all the vault songs, that would never have seen the light of day/would forever have stayed 'imprisoned', if it weren't for the re-recordings. The fact that it's in a 12 o'clock position still has me stressing though, we've been counting down to midnight for over a year now and every time Taylor changes her socials back to midnights colours, we're reminded that the clock is still ticking. Will all albums/vault tracks be free when we hit midnight or is something else being released from it's cage?? There is of course, also the orange door that descends from the big screen during the Eras tour performance of karma, the very last song of the tour, that explodes into a kind of rainbow supernova when it hits the ground. Ideas on that one welcome, I've seen many but none of them have convinced me yet. Only in so far that it seems to indicate that whatever the orange thing is, it follows the midnights era.

I can't not mention the lover nail that changed from pink to orange in July on tour, but I still have absolutely no idea why that is. Of all the albums, lover was the first one to be owned by her so no clue why that one is now orange...Maybe the era that the masters heist happened. After all, that also changed a lot about Lover, including the title, some songs were replaced and she never got to wear her rainbow dress. But why not have it orange from the start then?

Something else orange that has recently been added to the Eras tour is orange confetti. I don't think anyone has confirmed when this was added, but here is the confetti as collected by people in April vs at one of the latest shows in November:

So, it seems something orange is definitely joining the ranks of the eras, but if that's something new or old...who knows. Something that would support the vault theory is the Spotify wrapped canvas, specifically this section:

There's the orange vault with golden glitter (fearless), leaves (red), purple fireworks (speak now) and seagulls (1989) coming out, so that's all the albums that have been freed from imprisonment so far. The rep snake (and what I assume are debut butterflies) are coming out of the cave underneath. Interesting to note that the woman monitoring the seismograph is also right above the vault, and above her is the person with all the clocks. The big mastermind clock is on midnight, and the full video shows us that when the clock strikes midnight, there is an earthquake/explosion, which may be what caused the vault to open, the clock person is certainly looking down towards it with interest. Something else I've noticed about the full canvas is that her lavender mountain seems to be 'melting away' like a glacier where the items are placed because they're all sitting on green grass, the only things that are actually coming out of the mountain are her head and her hand holding the burning house. Which brings me to the last orange thing: the fire.

‘Karma is the fire in your house’, right? 😉 The Lover house has been burning down since day 1 of the Eras tour, and I’ve already made multiple attempts at guessing why that might be and especially, why it’s burning with blue flames first and then changes to orange before it fully collapses. But I don’t think I got it right, because my guess was that blue meant 1989tv era, and so far, nothing’s been on fire. Or did I miss it?? If anything, she threw a flame into our little gaylor house with her poorly worded prologue… so it wasn’t 1989tv. The Spotify video actually zooms in on the burning house and we can see some of the items from the midnights house: the red phone, the retro sofa, and the chessboard that’s fallen off the table. So, does that suggest the fire is burning the midnights era? Possibly, but when Taylor’s TIME article came out, I noticed something else that stopped me in my tracks. I know we’re all waiting for reputation tv in the next few months, and rep is in fact the only re-recording she gives an explicit shoutout to in the article (along with the very rep-coded photo shoot), and this is what she says:

So much to say about these few sentences. Note how she’s being directly quoted here, so these are the words she used, no paraphrasing. And the one that stood out to me the most is the way she describes the rep vault tracks as „fire“. Out of all the words she could have used, when she’s been showing us open lighters and a burning house all year, she calls the rep vault tracks FIRE 👀. Like the fire that burns your house???

My English language graduate brain also wants me to point out the following about the way she describes reputation as a concept. (For those of you that weren’t around in 2017, reputation never had a rollout cycle or any promotion, it was the album that had no explanation, she never did a single interview about it, so this is kind of the first time she ever talked about it). Why rep is the ‘most charged’ era is probably self-explanatory, but she also says it’s an expression of ‘female rage at being gaslit by an entire social structure’. So, assuming it’s her rage, what is society gaslighting her into believing? Maybe that two female friends can’t possibly be a couple, no matter how much they act like one. But a woman holding a man’s hand in public, that’s a couple for sure! I think heteronormativity is the social structure she’s mocking here, so much of reputation (even the title) makes so much sense when you look at it from that angle. We all know that if you heard any of Dress or Gorgeous with your societal conditioning removed you’d expect it to be about a woman, but heteronormativity and Taylor’s reputation for being boy-crazy made most people assume that couldn’t possibly be the case. And those people just saw it (as Taylor says) for the ‘sick snakes and strobe lights’. And immediately after that she says that the upcoming vault tracks will be fire. Call me crazy, but for me that sounds like “Reputation was me blatantly writing songs about the woman I love, because I know you guys won’t see for what it is anyway because you’re so blinded by heteronormativity, but these upcoming tracks will burn your expectations, you won’t be able to ignore it”. It might be wishful thinking, but by logical progression of what she’s saying here, it makes sense. And if I know one thing, it’s that Taylor chooses her words deliberately.

And the movie reference…? Collecting horcruxes or infinity stones suggest there is a mission/end goal that she’s working towards with these re-recordings. Guess we’ll have to wait for the movie to see how it ends 😉.

Q: why "vocalsynth"?

i know people commonly use vocaloid as an umbrella term to describe non-vocaloids as well but i'm adjusted to differentiating the two and i just prefer the word vocalsynth to be inclusive to every relevant software. also i'm a huge kafu fan and calling kafu a vocaloid feels really cursed

Q: can i submit songs?

A: yeah you can submit songs through my ask box, that doesn't mean i will post them as i'm trying to keep this blog personal to my own taste for funsies but i love hearing new songs. if i like it i might post it sometime

Q: can i ask you about other things/talk to you about vocalsynth?

yeah you might wanna do it on my main @kafus instead though LMAO BUT PLEASE DO this has been one of my two special interests for over a decade and counting

as of right now gonna put up two songs a day through queue however i might occasionally post something out of schedule because i'm excited about it or something. if i'm too strict about tumblr i nope out and abandon blogs so i may not be consistent foreverjdsfkfsd

i will always tag with both the vocalsynth(s) used, the producer name, and "song rec" except on posts that aren't song recs, where i use "asks" for asks and "kiki.txt" for personal posts

Q: can you tag (insert trigger here)?

you're free to ask but honestly if you're bothered by dark topics in music this might not be the place for you since i listen to a lot of sad or otherwise Mento Illness type music. i plan on tagging really fucked up subject matter like abuse when applicable or flashing lights in mvs but i am not perfect

Q: who is your favorite producer?

it was nekobolo for years but i have a really difficult time narrowing it down to just one these days. kanzaki iori, iyowa, harumaki gohan, guiano, mikito-p, and kairiki bear are some of my better known favorites that are still currently active, but i also love mawari, yugica, steaka, picdo, atols, the list goes on i could be here forever. as for nostalgic favorites or people who aren't active anymore, like i said there's nekobolo, but of course wowaka and siinamota (rest in peace) and yeah can you tell i have a lot of producers i like sdjfsd

Q: what's your favorite vocaloid/vocalsynth?

hime and mikoto are specifically my favorite vocaloids but if we're accounting for all of vocalsynth, kafu if it wasn't obvious lol
