some slightly hinged thoughts on poly bg3 companions

i've been Thinking Thoughts, because I feel like the companion thoughts on polyamory are more complicated than "some of them can also date Halsin"

full game spoilers below, assumed Tav POV (because I haven't done any Origin runs)

Act 1 Astarion would probably make fun of you for being greedy if you asked to be poly, but would go along with it even though he doesn't like it (because mans is not healthy, y'all). Would make fun of you for your bedroom preferences based on who else you picked. If you wanted to be poly with Karlach and Astarion in Act 1, he'd probably be baffled as to why, because you can't touch her so why even ask him about it? If the player responds about romance/dating, he'd make fun of them for being naive and then have an existential crisis. Act 2-3 Astarion pre-Cazador death would probably continue to go along with it, pretty similarly to how he reacts to being poly with Tav and Halsin. After Cazador, I feel like spawn!Astarion might ask to be monogamous, depending on who the third is (I can see him being alright with selunite!Shadowheart, Halsin, and Karlach, maybe Gale depending on how unhinged he is at that point, not sure about rebel!Lae'zel. Sharran!Shadowheart is an absolute no). Ascended!Astarion would demand monogamy from Tav (he's a greedy bastard) but would probably also sleep with sharran!Shadowheart and Gale (especially if he's on-track to become a god), just for power complex reasons.

Karlach is complicated. I get the feeling that she wouldn't mind being with a Tav who has sex with other Origins, but wouldn't want them to hook up with strangers or be romantically involved with anyone else. In Act 1 she gives explicit consent for Tav to sleep around while they can't touch her, but wants to be the only romantic focus. I think that eventually, she might be open to a closed poly relationship with Wyll, spawn!Astarion or selunite!Shadowheart, but that would have to be a lot of conversations in the making, and I don't think she'd want an open relationship.

Shadowheart is a freaky bitch and would act accordingly. She'd absolutely go for an open relationship, would enjoy watching Tav get dommed by Lae'zel after they've sorted their shit, and would probably hook up with Act 1 Astarion if Tav turned him down. In her own words, she would also climb Mount Halsin. Would also 100% dip after Moonrise to have transcendental religious sex with Aylin and Isobel and proceed to describe the whole thing to Tav in lurid detail the following morning.

Wyll might be the most strongly monogamous one of the bunch, though I feel like a Tav/Karlach/Wyll relationship could work. Outside of that potentiality, though, Wyll is 10000% monogamous. Honestly, he reads as aspec (probably demisexual) to me, but I'm also hella biased in favor of that interpretation given that I'm ace.

In terms of romance, Lae'zel reads as opposite to Wyll in a lot of ways. She likes sex unapologetically but has basically no experience with romance, and is uncomfortable with the feeling. I think she might be willing to have an open sexual relationship, but could just as easily be very possessive/protective of her love. She would absolutely not want Tav to be romantically involved with anyone else. Like Wyll, Lae'zel reads as aro-spec, probably gray-aro or even fully aromantic, given that her "romance" with Tav could just as easily be read as a sexual QPR.

Gale is also complicated. I haven't actually seen a lot of Gale's romance, but given that he's still dealing with Mystra's bullshit I feel like he would not want the extra complication of another person. Maybe Tav/Gale/Astarion, in a "we can make each other worse" sort of way.

BONUS: thoughts on sleeping with the Emperor

It's literally impossible I've tried so hard but my mind is gone.

Anyways headcanons. (Idk if you wanted relationship based ones or just Hobie related ones but oh well. These are gonna be random as hell lol.)

General Headcanons

You can take Hobie and his Caribbean roots from my cold dead hands (and even then I'll arise from the grave to fight you)

I feel like he knows how to cook but he acts like he can't just to mess with everyone.

Aroace Hobie supremacy here. (We all heard that I hate labels line right. Aroace was the first thing that popped in my mind IDC IDC.)

I feel like back in his home dimension he just picks up kids off the street to adopt. Or at the very least all the kids in his area know of him and absolutely adore him.

He crafts in his down time when he's not punching fascists. It started as just patches on his jacket but now he straight up just crochets plushies that he gives to the spider band and the kids in his area.

He's just the hypeman. Always hyping up his friends and motivating them because he didn't get that when he was their age.

He seems like he's the cool and suave type at first but he's actually a huge dork like every other spiderman. He's constantly telling Gwen and Pav about his favorite Punk artists and whatever new tech is coming out in his universe.

Romantic Headcanons

His love language is acts of service, physical touch, and words of affirmation Fight me.

Like he just is always on you if he can be. Leaning against you while talking, lying across you if you're sitting down, head resting on top of yours type beat. (You get what I'm saying here.)

He's the best guy to go too if you need a pick me up. You're feeling down? Well he's not having it.

He definitely takes you on the coolest kind of dates. Not the traditional movie and dinner type stuff. Nah y'all are gonna go to some underground spot that had a hidden entrance and a passcode.

He's fairly neutral to PDA. Like he probably won't initiate it himself half of the time. But if you initiate it he'll definitely reciprocate it.

A/N: This reminds me I have to do more research on Jamaican culture for future works. If someone could help there that'd be nice. That's one down 2 more to go. I think I haven't looked at my inbox yet.

uhh peridot SU for the ask meme? i liked her a lot when i was younger and since you take SU characters thought id try lol

Sexuality Headcanon: While it's not technically canon since it didn't explicitly show up in the show, Maya Petersen (one of the show's storyboard artists) said that Peridot is written as aroace, so the fandom (myself included) generally agrees that she's canonically aroace.

Gender Headcanon: I believe all Gems are canonically nonbinary, so she's defintely enby. Other than that, I'm not sure! I don't think she knows either lol. I think the concept of gender would fascinate her though.

A ship I have with said character: while I've very gradually warmed up a little to Lapis and Peridot as a queer platonic ship, I actually enjoy her dynamic with Amethyst a lot more. Can't decide if I like them more as just friends or more a QP thing though.

A BROTP I have with said character: I already talked about Amethyst and Peridot so I'm going to say Garnet and Peridot! The amount of love and trust between those two is phenomenal. And I know I'm cheating but this is so closely followed by Steven and Peridot I can't NOT mention it.

A NOTP I have with said character: Used to be Peridot and Lapis, but again, I've since calmed down a bit about them. I just. Really didn't like how their relationship started (and how the events of Back to the Barn were just never adequately addressed as something other than a shortcoming of Lapis, I guess??) But now? Maybe....I mean I almost feel like it's cheating to mention a "Steven x Gem" ship in any more-than-friendship way because that just generally makes me uncomfy, so I'll go with...Jasper and Peridot. Though I do think they could be friends now!

A random headcanon: Peridot 100% writes Camp Pining Hearts fanfiction.

General Opinion over said character: I love her so much! I love her personality, I love her arc, I love everything she brought to the story. I really love her voice too.

For the ask game, how about 001 for either fairy tail or fullmetal alchemist?

Fam, I couldn't decide, so I'm just going to do both XD. I'll separate them on different posts though, so here's the first:

Fullmetal Alchemist

Favorite character: Greed. 100% Greed.

Least Favorite character: Uhhh... General Ravens I guess? He was just a bitch (and not an interesting one) but he got what was coming to him so it's all good.

5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): Royai (Roy x Riza), Royai, Royai, and Ro— Okay so I'm biased towards Royai, but for realsies, it would be them, Maes x Gracia, Izumi x Sig, and definitely Winmail.

Character I find most attractive: *aroace start-up noises* ...low-key Hughes, ngl.

Character I would marry: Frickin Kain Fuery. Man’s just a nerd who loves dogs? I vibe with that. Just chilling with a bunch of rescue puppies and kittens and play video games or whatever. He seems like a thoughtful and chill dude.

Character I would be best friends with: Al. We would be snarky little shits together and befriend allll of the cats and team-up to be everybody’s support group.

A random thought: Al 100% has several named and cared for strays in East City. Fuery or Hawkeye probably care for them when the Elric brothers are gone. Ed has no idea.

An unpopular opinion: I don’t feel strong about this (and I don’t know if it’s could be considered “unpopular”) but I actually wanted a “power of friendship” ending to the series, in a way. Essentially, instead of Ed trading his ability to use alchemy for Al, after Hohenheim offers his life for Al’s, people start chipping in that Ed could use some of their life force instead of taking it all from Hohenheim. So it would be a call back to that time Ed used some of his life force to get out of being impaled, as well as a reflection of how Father made the homunculi. So instead of any one thing being traded, it would have been offered bits of dozens upon dozens of people that Al and the Elric brothers touched in some way, which also would have been a parallel to the philosopher’s stones (i.e. a mirror of the many lives for one method). So the culmination of “what is worth a life?” question would somewhat literally be all the different ways that life can affect others, represented just by little pieces of everybody else. I thought that would be neat. Though the somewhat tragic ending of Ed giving up his alchemy is also meaningful in its own way, so I’m not mad or anything. It’s just something I think about.

My Canon OTP: Roy and Riza, all the way. Very few ships make me actually invested in them, and they are one of the few. They’re so close and they trust each other wholeheartedly but also tease each other relentlessly. They’re friends and partners and the care they have for each other is palpable. The “ship conflict” isn’t about whether or not they will kiss or not, but rather, it’s just a matter of them vocalizing what they both know, and freaking surviving until the end of the manga. I just think they’re neat. A+ power couple imo.

My Non-canon OTP: Uhh, I don’t really ship much at all in FMA (or many shows), but you know what? Heinkel and Darius. They got mad dad energy and they work well together. Yeah, I’m going with them.

Most Badass Character: Ooo this is a tough one. There are lots of contenders, but it’s a close battle between Olivier and Riza. Olivier girlbosses gatekeeps gaslights stabs a man and cements over his body, but Riza is just an all around badass sniper and she keeps Team Mustang afloat. Yeah, I think Riza wins for sure, but shout-out to Olivier’s sheer metal and audacity.

Most Epic Villain: Kimblee. Man wasn’t even involved in anything, he was just crazy, but in the most compelling way possible. He wasn’t random. He had some points. But he was just the incarnation of human apathy in a show about being driven by emotions and ambitions, and that was really interesting.

Pairing I am not a fan of: Uh, besides anything that ships the kiddos with the adults, or siblings together, I guess I’m not a big fan of Al x Mei or Greed x Ling as ships. I like the friend synergy but it doesn’t feel deep enough to be a ship I guess? That and Greed is an adult imo so that’s just... mmmm noooo

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): Honestly? I can’t think of anything. Arakawa out there slaying.

Favourite Friendship: Now the friendship between Green and Ling is interesting. Greed’s the bad-influence big brother and Ling is the crafty young one that ends up teaching Greed how to have his cake and eat it too. They’re both on the same page low-key and they both use the other to learn how to care for people more? It’s just neat. The childhood friends dynamic of Ed, Al, and Winry is also nice. Like Al and Winry teaming up at Ed’s expense? Ed and Al being gremlings and Winry being responsible? Ed and Winry bantering and Al choosing sides at complete random? Classic.

Character I most identify with: Winry, probably. She’s just chilling, focusing on her interests, and her friends pop in with problems without warning and suddenly she’s got to deal with it, but she loves her friends greatly and she’s not about ribbing on them. I get it.

Character I wish I could be: Xiao-Mei. Oh, to be a smol panda, capable of rational thought but also not obligated to do anything. Jaws of steel. Can win fights and make grown men cry. Yeah.

this is a weird question but what's it like being aroace? I'm writing a story and i'm hoping to include more diversity but as I've had no experience w these kinda things I'm trying to ask around to get more knowledge (I've been doing the same thing w my trans/nb friends! Sorry!)

Uhh as for what it’s like, obviously it’s going to be different for every person so be sure to ask around, but in my experience it sometimes feels like people are being very arbitrary with their actions? Things like flirting or actively trying to pursue someone romantically, to me it feels a bit like “...okay but why though??” I don’t even dislike romance, it’s just that sometimes it seems kinda... random I guess.

It does make listening to most pop songs unrelatable, though, and even though I sometimes like romance in fiction I seem to have a lower tolerance for it than most people I know. (And I can’t even tolerate smut at all. There’s the ace part for ya!) And as you get older you’re reminded how different things are for you, with people constantly talking about their SO’s and asking you when you’ll get one. I’ve seen other people mention an analogy - a world where everyone keeps going on and on about a certain perfume but you just can’t smell anything unusual at all and wonder what they’re on about or what’s wrong with you - yeah, I’d say it’s kinda like that.

OH, and ever since I was little, I always kept latching onto characters and deciding that they’re uninterested in romance and sex (well before I even knew what being aromantic and asexual was). You know Treasure Planet? At first I was heartbroken that they cancelled the sequel, until I found out they’d been planning to give Jim a love interest in the sequel, and suddenly I was quite jarringly relieved, because why?? would he need or want a love interest?? he’s Jim Hawkins!! Why would you ruin his personality with a love interest??? that’s so unnecessary??? (See? Aroace headcanon right there, lol)

And I thought I had crushes in school, but I picked them. Like, if someone asked me then I would just pick the most good-looking person I knew. Or if a friend said they had a crush on someone, and I didn’t think the person looked totally awful, then I would say I had a crush on them too. Honestly, I thought it was normal to do that, I thought having a crush was thinking someone was cute-looking, and that people were making up the romantic/sexual attraction bits to sound more grown-up ;_;

Also, I think non-aroaces don’t really see this side of things, but people get really aggressive with the amatonormativity, it’s that ingrained. I mean, my parents literally outright told me they’d rather I was gay than aroace when I explained things to them. And “friends” have harassed me when I came out as ace, I’ve been told basically everything on those “what NOT to say to aro/ace people” lists right to my face, been pressured into lying about things because people won’t take no for an answer, my family don’t believe me at all and constantly try to convince me I’m wrong. (Except my brother, you rock dude!) It’s not something that non-aroaces are aware of because it doesn’t directly affect them, so it’s easy to understate the amount of overall abuse, gaslighting and erasure that’s faced by aros/aces. Unfortunate but true ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

And on top of all that, you know that when people say “of course I consider friendship just as highly as romance!” deep down, they probably don’t actually mean it, lol. Subconsciously most people do indeed place a higher value on romance than friendship. It’s much easier to notice when you’re aro.

One last thing... I hate soulmate AUs. There, I said it! They rub me the wrong way, even when you’re including the whole “but soulmates can be platonic too!” thing. It just feels... iffy.

Okay that was all probably an incoherent wall of text, sorry about that! If you’ve got other questions or more specific questions I’m happy to answer those to the best of my ability! I hope things go well! (And I hate to shamelessly plug my own fic, but I was writing No Romo for Aro/Ace August and it’s not done yet but it’s the most aroace thing I’ve written, hehe, it’s probably a better glimpse into The Life Of An AroAce than this will ever be)
