You know I don’t think we make big enough of a deal about in the pilot episode when Patricia is talking about how Joy’s disappeared and hasn’t called her, and Jerome says to her, “Patricia, you’ve disappeared more than enough times.”
What does that mean????? Has she run away from school a bunch before??? Not shown up to dinners?? Dodged her friends’ calls?? Jerome just says this pretty casually without any additional explanation and it’s never addressed again. Bro literally what does he mean that Patricia’s disappeared a bunch of times?? That feels like something significant that there’s a story behind. What does this mean. What happened. I need answers!!!

K-pop soloist Chung Ha has released a poignant music video for her new single ‘Killing Me’. The visual follows Chung Ha as she tries to move on from a bad breakup. It opens with her seeming looking forward to a new day, before she is swept into a world of heartbreak as she is reminded of a former lover. The singer attempts to party her pain away with friends  But by the end of the video, Chung Ha ends up sitting sullenly on a couch as her heartbreak takes over once again, while the party continues to rage on around her. “It’s killing me, killing me / Every day is a long tunnel / Again, I’m exhausted by the endless darkness,” she sings on the EDM-inspired pop song. FKA Twigs has unveiled a new video for recent single ‘Measure Of A Man’ featuring Central Cee . First released earlier this month, the clip for ‘Measure Of A Man’ features exclusive footage from the upcoming film, The King’s Man. The Diana Kunst-directed video sees FKA Twigs wield a sword against a demon-like figure while Central Cee raps against a red backdrop as FKA Twigs dances behind him. The track, which takes on a theatrical tone, posed a challenge for Twigs, who said in a prior statement: “This song has such a different sound, which is a challenge; you’ve got to really embody the song. For me especially with my vocals, I had to pull a different side of my artistry out.” West London rapper Central Cee added: “What I listen to when it comes to trying to find beats is something theatrical, it needs to sound like a movie. And that’s exactly what’s going on with this song, it sounds like it’s made for a movie regardless.” [via NME]

Witch Fever have a video out for track ‘Bully Boy'. The concept for the video was The Witch Trials but for drag queens and CBeebies. Violent, but in a cartoonish, over the top, completely unrealistic way, with watermelons and balloons being stabbed. It ends with the band being burnt at the stake with paper flames. Taken from their debut EP Reincarnate which came out digitally last month, ’Bully Boy' is a steel toe-capped boot to abuse of male power, which considers the concept of God within a patriarchal system.

Peckham, London based band Black Bordello release new single 'Drones' and announce their new EP White Bardo, out March 2022 via Hideous Mink Records (Opus Kink, Fake Turins, Body Horror). With inspirations ranging from PJ Harvey and Björk to Aphex Twin and David Bowie, Black Bordello's carnivalesque blend of art-rock, punk, jazz and Turkish psychedelia is a wholly unique aural experience. Written during lockdown 2020, (somewhat illegally) in a basement underneath a closed pub, 'Drones' opens with a theatrical descending bass line, before erupting into a roar of magisterial brass, fizzing synth runs, and frenzied percussion. Discussing the initial inspiration behind the track, vocalist Sienna Bordello said: "The idea for 'Drones' came about after I watched a documentary about a Drone pilot. He was a gamer who had been headhunted by the US military and recruited into the military workforce. He was given a gaming station with Xbox-like controllers and vintage screens which showed simplistic colours, much like the platform arcade games of the 80s and 90s. He was given missions like ‘cut the grass’, ‘trim the weeds’, ‘tidy this area’. After his service was done, he suffered PTSD when the realisation that he’d been controlling the distribution and attack of drone missiles on civilians sank in. I thought of this as an interesting subject matter for the song, namely because we were in a global pandemic and all life as we knew it had been halted, yet at the same time the UK and US (amongst others)  governments had put more money into military than ever before, and had recruited more troops to attack parts of the middle east throughout our so-called ‘international emergency’. I was gobsmacked that they were passing needless military operations whilst the world was distracted by the pandemic. Every person in this situation is a puppet, but who is pulling the strings?"

KRISTEENYOUNG shares a brand new single entitled 'Life Kills.' 'Life Kills' is the first song and single from the upcoming KRISTEENYOUNG album, The Beauty Shop (due March 2022 via The Record Label). The Beauty Shop is a song cycle based on the life of a serial killer, with each song taking on one major emotion. But, really, it’s about how life can kill our emotions and asserts that everyone is part victim/part perpetrator. 'Life Kills' is based on the emotion of rage. Young wrote, arranged, produced, co-mixed and played almost every instrument on the album, as well as designed and made the album art and visuals (including clothing). And 'Life Kills' is no exception. Young wrote, arranged, produced and co-mixed (co-mixer was Tony Visconti) 'Life Kills.' She played every instrument except guitar which was played by renowned avant-guitarist, Don DeVore (Collapsing Scenery). The bass was played by legendary producer/bassist, Tony Visconti. The song eschews genre but features her signature dissonant piano bashing, operatic vocals, tribal beats, and incisive lyrics. Young shot and edited the video herself, and designed/made all props and wardrobe. Most of the video was shot at location, Renditions (beauty salon) on Highway 66 in St. Louis, Missouri in October 2021. Some footage was also shot at Magic Touch Auto Spa in Lodi, New Jersey.

Constellation is pleased to announce a new artist, Kee Avil, and debuts the stirring video for Kee Avil's new single, 'See, my shadow.' Led by Montréal producer Vicky Mettler, Kee Avil combines guitar, voice, electroacoustics and electronic production to create song assemblages that teeter on the edge of collapse while oozing forward, like sticky resin picking up and shedding disparate elements along the way. Kee Avil evolved from playing guitar with broken cymbals and drumsticks to forging askew tempos and templates glued together by samples of screws dropped into crystal bowls. "A shadow’s moment, distorted. Warped piano samples, chipped ceramic cups, swirling metal, feedback assembled. I used to think this was a love song. Constructed from a demo, never finished, originally recorded for the Kee Avil EP. 'See, my shadow' is one of my most produced songs – a large part of the work was to strip it down and find the right balance between chaos and density vs stability and drive. It will be the first song on a new album. Writing this I find myself trying to find a reason why I would "stand here blind, deaf and mute" – ultimately the words are there for their rhythm, imagery and texture. The text for the ending was written in one moment, intense but fleeting, later adapted. The meaning of the song changes all the time – fittingly, it’s as though this moment has been passed on to my shadow. To reveal what I’ve hid, what is recognised, ignored, what is real. Blank, misdrawn, rebuilt, the creature as the i. With masks, I break and reconstruct these ideas, mix the familiar with the abstract."

Brussels-born, world-raised, Berlin-based, singer, songwriter and artistic director K.ZIA shares the breathtaking new music video for her latest single ‘I Got Your Back’. The track follows the release of previous singles ‘Sanctuary’ and ‘JFMB’, and is taken from her upcoming debut album Genesis, set for release on February 11, 2022. On her brand new conceptual album, K.ZIA brings forward her rich Universe and introduces two sides to her persona: K.ZIA who emulates light, warmth, passion and emotion and sings in English, and ZIA, her darker, bolder, intoxicating alter-ego who sings in French.  Effortlessly blending elements of alternative R&B, soul, Pop, trap and afrobeats with K.ZIA’s captivating vocals, ‘I Got Your Back’ showcases K.ZIA’s effortless and natural gift for storytelling. Drawing from her combined influences, K.ZIA thrives on being able to experiment with the emotions and feelings she’s able to convey through her music.  Speaking of the track, she says: “'I Got Your Back' is a song close to my heart. Dedicated to one of my closest and longest friends, It’s a song of comfort for the ones among us who suffer from depression. Life can feel so lonely at times, depression is a subject we don’t often talk about but touches so many. It’s ok to need some time off, it’s okay to feel a certain type of way. The last 2 years have been heavy on a lot of us and this song is a warm hug from a distance to make sure you know that whatever happens, I got you.”

Minneapolis artist and musician Frances Priya Anczarski released her new album as FPA, Princess Wiko, in November via 37d03d. Described by FPA as "the story of a young woman of noble birth forced to betray her heart, and marry a man she hardly knows, all the while going down the slow path of self discovery," it's a gorgeous album, full of lush soul and accented with electronic touches. There's also a new video for album track 'Last to Bloom,' a moody, candle-lit visual directed by Brendan Lauer and Ariana Bailey. "'Last to Bloom' is the final chapter of our story," FPA says. "It's about self-actualisation during what seems to be the end of the world. The rebirth of Princess Wiko has come, but nobody is left to witness, and nothing surrounds her but death and ash. ‘The leaves are all but wilted all but gone.’” [via Brooklyn Vegan]

Boston based singer-songwriter MAYA LUCIA shares her latest indie-pop single ‘ur ruining it !’. The single is accompanied by a bright and bold music video. Garage-Pop singer-songwriter MAYA LUCIA is the queen of hearts. Having spent the last five years bouncing between the Pacific and the Atlantic, the Minneapolis native pulls DIY sounds from both sides of the coast. Her distinctive vocal styling and angst-ridden lyrics effortlessly float between punk, pop, and surf-rock. Her next EP is due Spring 2022. Speaking of the music video, MAYA says, “Jack (Campise) and I have worked together previously on my music video for ‘sadgirl (rip moviepass)’. We met our freshman year of college before I transferred schools and have been friends ever since. Together, we created the idea of a reunion of sorts after the pandemic. We drew from the film Boogie Nights and their use of tracking one-takes to create the flow in the music video. A lot of our close friends were part of the music video and doubled as cast and crew mates, which made it very special.”

On the music video for 'Maybe It’s Me,' mesmerising Brisbane act Pipin dons clown makeup. Aside from being visually intriguing, it’s also an insight into the multifaceted nature of the song, and the artist herself. On 'Maybe It’s Me,' we receive ecstasy and surrender. A radio-friendly kit shimmers along with a cute synth that teeters between major and minor chords, adding depth to an otherwise innocent pop structure. “Socks pulled off your toes, freckles on your nose, talking about someone I don’t know”, Pipin sings gorgeously, painting a vivid image of tension bubbling underneath a bright blue sky. Next comes the head-swaying hook, which gets stuck in your ears after just one listen. It’s a testament to Pipin’s captivating, idiosyncratic songwriting. “Maybe it’s me, I could be happy, I could be everything that I am not”, Pipin manifests, over the bubbly production work of real-life partner, Hugh Middleton. No wonder the sound and melody are so in-sync. You can sing along gleefully, celebrating a new chapter, or sing along ironically, remembering the weight of consequence that inspires such an epiphany. Both are feasible. The music video also contributes to this wondrous exploration, as Pipin performs in front of flashing, brightly coloured backdrops, both immersing and disorientating the listener. Parisian riser November Ultra has shared her new single 'le manège'. Out now, the single completes a memorable 12 months for the bedroom pop newcomer, whose DIY tactics have brought huge online success. 'le manège' pivots once more, with November Ultra discussing "endless love" while absorbing new sonic aspects. Melding together vintage R&B, Millennial pop, and the Spanish musicals she heard from her grandfather, 'le manège' seems to shift and evolve across several different planes. She comments... “This song is about endless love, about loving someone so much that you love them wrong, about being constantly close to short circuit. The beginning of the song pays tribute to Maurice Sendak's children's tale Max and the Maximons and this sentence pronounced by one of the monsters: "I'll eat you up I love you so'. This is what we wanted to show in this video, this carousel, a universe stuck between the real and the unreal. The beginning of the song is soft, light, a dream-like waltz. The little outdated but beautiful idea that we have of love and relationships when we grow up watching musicals. Then, the more the clip progresses, the more what we found beautiful becomes strange, as if it was going off the rails. The same scene repeats itself in a loop, the carousel gets stuck, like a movie you've seen so much that the film gets scratched, the dialogues scratch and everything that seemed beautiful, sweet and cute gets distorted, glitchy, and offers a new reading. Going from the mountain to the little volcano.” [via Clash]

Basel/London-based pop singer Emilia Anastazja just released her colourful new EP Flower House, bringing some warmth to the cold autumn days. With influences ranging from 070 Shake and Jessie Ware to Mary J. Blige and Whitney Houston, those sonic touch-points can be distinctly heard within Emilia's creations. New single and EP title track 'Flower House' was written in the aftermath of her previous home being torn down to be replaced by a new block of "overpriced apartments". A colourful amalgam of 90's inflected R&B and effervescent electro-pop, Emilia opens proceedings with a quiet admission of acceptance: "I‘m in the mood for taking what‘s good in my life / The more you pull down, the more I look up to the sky" before the track opens up into its soaring chorus. Speaking on the release of new single 'Flower House', Emilia said "The lyrics are talking about my reflections and memories of an apartment block that I used to live in with my best friends which was demolished in front of my eyes. It was a whole community of artists living there and we always had an open door for everyone and the rent was almost for free. The house was demolished because the state decided to build some more overpriced modern apartments there. This home holds a special place in my memory and is often a place I look back to as the last real place I could call home. I wanted to express both my anger and my fantasy to “Burn” down what now stands in its place."

Moonchild Sanelly has unveiled the music video for her latest single 'Covivi'. Released at a time when it could not be more relevant, the message of the single and music video is a plea for the pandemic to end so that people can enjoy the outdoors, especially leading up to the festive season. The video speaks to a huge party culture in SA where celebrations are shared with friends and memories created through music and dance. With SA facing a new wave and variant of the pandemic, the video will bring positive energy during this lockdown phase. “I am super excited about 'Covivi' visuals dropping because it is literally us having a conversation with the one person/thing that has been blocking us from grooving because we want to save our lives but our bodies want to dance. So I am having a serious conversation asking Covivi to open the doors because we want to dance”, says Moonchild. [via Times Live]

Doja Cat embarks on another spaced-out adventure in the new music video for 'Woman,' a track off her latest album, Planet Her. The clip was directed by Child, and it finds an intergalactic queen being warned of an imminent threat to her throne before conjuring the most powerful weapon she has at her disposal: Doja Cat. Admittedly, the narrative plot gets kind of lost from there, but that doesn’t mean the rest of the clip isn’t lacking in eye-popping visuals, futuristic costumes, and expertly choreographed dance sequences. The dynamic duo of Charlotte Adigéry and Bolis Pupul have shared yet another bop of a track off their upcoming Soulwax co-produced album Topical Dancer, entitled 'HAHA'. Previous singles 'Thank You' and 'Blenda' further established their knack for subverting the platitudinous into quick-witted critical commentary. It also helps that Adigéry and Pupul possess the productional smarts to make any living soul prance around like a complete fool. 'HAHA' doubles down even more on Adigéry’s signature lyrical minimalism: in fact, there’s but one hook, and a great one at that: “Guess you had to be there”. The song samples Adigéry’s burst of laughter, expertly and infectiously laced in between the song’s slinky electronic beat, in a way putting a modern spin on eighties luminaries such as Yello and Jean-Michel Jarre. Obviously, this is a song of suggestion rather than one of confession, though some hints of its backstory might be found in the offbeat musical video. The commentary the two artists have given remains just as cryptic: “a visual shorthand for unhatched potential”.  We’ll leave it for you to unwrap whether this is allegorical or a creative exploration of an inside joke. Undoubtedly, it’s fun as heck. [via Beats Per Minute]

Day 6: Fleet, Union, Fire At Will, Crossover
Ok, quick note. This is going to be massive AU, and fan-service out the waazoo. Right, that’s all.
Also, @ladywolvesbayne , you wanted some John and Steve being badass? 😉
—————————
Well this is certainly a predicament.
Steve let the thought crossed his mind as he chucked his shield into the chest of an Elite to send it stumbling backwards, following it up with kicking its leg the wrong way so hard it snapped. The shield predictably flew back to his hand and he caught it, uppercut the Elite in the mandibles, and was rewarded with the audible crunching of bone.
When the head exploded in a splash of purple blood, he simple shoved the body aside and continued on. The Chief had arrived.
Steve sprinted forward, a cluster of Marines behind him. His mind drifted to how they’d ended up here.
Well... not even Tony was sure what happened, but they had guessed they had somehow done something wrong with the Infinity Gauntlet and sent themselves here. To another universe, with a humanity that had been fighting for its very existence.
Steve... well.... let’s just say Nat had to comfort him when he realized the extent of the war and that he couldn’t have helped at all.
A line of purple plasma blasts skittering across the ground in front brought him crashing back to reality. Seems like a— what had the Chief called them? Shade turrets! Seems like a Shade turret had spotted them, and it was aiming right at a Marine.
Steve jumped in front of the blasts and raised his shield, grunting when the superheated plasma started slamming into his shield. He was definitely able to stop it, but that didn’t mean it didn’t burn like all hell. “Chief!”
“Standby.” Came back over the comm.
And then an Elite corpse came flying through the trees, followed closely by the Chief, who dropped to a knee and skidded forward along the dirt. Steve instantly knew what he was doing.
Taking the initiative, the Captain sprinted forward and leaped onto Chief’s back, and then leaped again when he felt the seven foot tall man rise underneath him, sending him flying into the air.
“Cover the Cap!” Shouted one of the Marines.
Steve chuckled to himself as he landed on the raised earthwork the Shade turret was settled on, performing a combat roll to keep his momentum. He shot to his feet and turned to the left, spartan-kicking a Grunt in the face so hard its skull shattered as the body flew away.
“Rogers, on your six.”
Steve whirled as the Chief’s warning came over the comm, and proceeded to get his shield knocked out of his hand by a Brute.
“I thought you said the Storm Covenant didn’t have any Brutes?” He grunted into the comm as he rolled out of the way of a gravity hammer swing.
“They shouldn’t. Something’s wrong.”
Steve let that thought simmer as he slammed several open-palm strikes into the Brute’s chest before jumping into the air and kicking backwards off its chest, pulling a mid-air backflip and landed at a kneel. His eyes darted over the Plasma Pistol the Grunt had dropped and immediately a plan formed in his mind.
The Captain sprinted forward as the Brute lifted his hammer, and then slid between the beast’s legs as the hammer crashed down on the dirt behind him followed by a Brute snarl. Now behind it, the Captain rose to his feet and sprinted for the pistol, rolling over the ground as he grabbed it and immediately beginning to charge it up.
The Brute, for his part, was raging now. He snarled and raised his hammer, running towards Steve, who let the trigger go and sent a fully charged Plasma Pistol blast into the Brute’s knee, making it collapse with a roar and drop the hammer.
Immediately, Steve tossed the pistol and darted for the hammer as the Brute rose to one knee, and with one swing, sent the now-dead beast flying. “Chief, heads up!”
The Spartan caught the hammer sent his way in one smooth motion, and proceeded to use it to liquify the innards of three Elites by activating the gravity manipulation and slamming all three at the same time.
Spotting his shield where it had been knocked away, Steve retrieved it only to hear-
“Hunter! Defilade, defilade!”
“Shit-“
He could hear Tony calling him out for his language even when he had no idea he’d said that. Steve jumped down from the earthwork and looked over at the Hunter bearing down on the Chief. “Hey! You missed one!”
And then threw his shield into the back of the Hunter’s head. Surprisingly fast, the beast turned around and roared, charging at the Captain, only for the Chief to tear it in two with a hammer strike. Before they had a chance to do anything, a cluster of Covenant troops emerged from the trees, and a Phantom emerged from the clouds.
“Chief?” Steve tightened his shield on his arm and raised it.
The Spartan nodded in reply, before slamming the gravity hammer into Steve’s shield. The resulting shockwave took out the Covenant troops. And several dozen trees.
Without waiting, they both sprinted towards the Phantom, only for the Chief to suddenly stop, then grab the arm Steve extended to him, before launching him at the speed of an Archer missile into the sky towards the dropship.
The Covenant Pilot was in the middle of making a turn, so Steve flew straight into the troop bay, slamming into a Brute so hard it fell out of the dropship. Quickly, he threw his shield into the face of a Jackal, of which it bounced off and hit two Grunts in quick succession. As it did this, Steve drop-kicked an Elite out of the Phantom, and kicked a Grunt into a Jackal, easily catching his shield as it returned to him. He picked up a Plasma Grenade off the floor and activated it, tossing it into the cockpit before leaked out of the Phantom as it detonated in a wash of purple flame.
The two fighting styles of the Spartan and the Captain merged quite well. Quite an interesting union.
Landing on the ground, he activated his comm. “Stark, I hope you’re having better luck than us.”
—————————
“-uck than us.”
“You wish, Capsicle. We’re- woah!” Tony jerked to his left as a wash of plasma clipped his leg. “Watch the paint!” He yelled as he blasted the offending Seraph with his Arc Reactor beam. “Little Red, Aunt Peg, how about you?”
—————————
“-ow about you?”
Peggy rolled her eyes. “Captain Lasky is performing effectively, Anthony.”
“Gee, thanks.” Thomas chuckled, then turned back to the bridge. “Weapons Officer, set mark 1-7-6, ready MAC-1, fire when when ready. Ready EP-1, set sweeping trajectory through targets Storm-1 through Storm-3.”
“MAC-1 firing!” The deck rumbled. “MAC round away.”
Peggy was still trying to wrap her head around how she’d even ended up here, but she wasn’t complaining. Apparently Steve had tried to come back to her, and something had gone wrong.
“Lieutenant James, set course 2-7-0. Ahead flank.” He turned back to Weapons. “Weapons, fire EP-1 at assigned target.”
“Firing EP-1!” A bright white line shot out from the front of the Infinity and sheared through not one, not two, but three Covenant frigates.
“Captain!” Lieutenant James called out.
“El-Tee?” Lasky asked the bald man.
“We have an incoming Slipspace signature. Collision alarms are flaring!”
“All hands, brace brace!” Lasky barked into the intercom.
And then a CSO-Class emerged from Slipspace right in front of them.
“Bloody....” Peggy muttered.
“Incoming projectiles!”
“Spin up poi—“
“Too late!”
The ship rumbled and the lights flashed as countless Plasma Torpedoes slammed into the vulnerable super-carrier. “Roland, re-route non-critical power to shields!”
“FRIDAY, help him!” Natasha snapped from her place in the corner.
“On it.” The two replied simultaneously.
A tense silence ensued. The CSO, however dilapidated it was, stopped firing.
....
....
....
“Slipspace rupture detected....”
“This is Captain James Cutter of the UNSC Spirit Of Fire, we’re here to help.”
“Oh my god...” Lasky muttered.
“Slipspace rupture detected....”
“This is Vice Admiral Preston Cole of the UNSC Everest, what’s your status?”
“It can’t be....” Even Roland was in disbelief.
“Slipspace rupture detected....”
“UNSC Aegis Fate...”
“Slipspace rupture detected....”
“-SC Roman Blue...”
“Slipspace rupture detected....”
“Fleet...” Lasky began. “fire at will.”

Damn, so I just watched some clips from season one and two of NCIS and all that show back then was was Kibbs.
You are so right, anon. and the fact that you watching “some clips” can see it...unreal.
you see, anon, at the very beginning when Bellisario created the show, he had Kibbs in mind.
Tumblr media
he wanted to find the actress with the best chemistry to flirt with Mark Harmon.
Also, he wrote the pilot, which is straight up blatant Kibbs flirting. And, given that he likes starting shows and then “leaving them”, as in, handing the leadership over to someone else, I think it’s worth taking a look at the other episodes he wrote.
Among them, we’ll find 1x16 (Ari, the bad guy who’s after Kate is introduced. he’s also linked to Gibbs at the end.), 1x23 (Ari kidnaps Kate and Gibbs is the first one to realize not only that she’s missing, but that Ari has her.) Half of season 2 took the Tate turn (the other half didn’t and that’s part of the reason why the season is a mess ship-wise, another reason is sexism but that’s a story for another day), wanna know how many eps did Bellisario write? 1. 2x22. There’s really nothing Kibbs in that episode but it does settle Tate as nothing more than siblings. They fight all the time, but in the end, they deeply care about each other. He then wrote 3x01 and 3x02, which show, among other things, Gibbs mourning Kate so heavily that he starts dissociating or whatever
Tumblr media
remember this weird ass montage? lol. there are also demeaning Kate representations in those episodes, we don’t talk about those. but Gibbs’ Kate representations are interesting, because he’s subconsciously blaming himself for her death. (this thought belongs to @itbloomedforyourlittlegirl) Kate would NEVER blame him like that. but he feels guilty, because, as we saw in eps like 1x09 and 2x19, he’d rather die for her than let her die.
and he also wrote the hiatus episodes. remember how Gibbs got his memory back? THE LITERAL LAST FEW YEARS OF HIS LIFE UP UNTIL THAT POINT? Ziva said “Ari. Ari killed Kate.”
so let’s never forget that Donald Bellisario, the creator of NCIS, was rooting (writing) for Kibbs.
I kinda forgot where I was going with this but the bottom line is, yes, it was all Kibbs back then because that was the purpose of the show. Kate was supposed to be The One for Gibbs, after 3 failed marriages (and no Shannon). and they wanted to play it slow burn, that’s why they introduced Tate during season 2 without stopping Kibbs (like I said, this season is a mix of ships). but then Sasha (rightfully so) decided to leave to focus on family (and maybe to stop working too many hours and being able to eat normally again. this is another story for another day but feel free to send more asks about these other stories).
and it’s a shame people either forgot that or decided to ignore it. even though Kate was mentioned A LOT after her death, her relationship with Gibbs was never addressed, not even when she was alive. the more time passes the easier it would be for current NCIS writers (I believe there are still some OG producers in the team) to confirm Kibbs. we don’t need a happy ending. at this point, we don’t even need to hear that Kate was the only woman who Gibbs really loved. all we need to hear is “yes, they were involved.” and that’s it. it’s so, so easy. “Wh-...boss, you and Kate?” “Yeah, I thought y’all knew.” see? I just did it and I’m not even an amateur writer.
they could do it on social media too. like. us Kibbs shippers will die with this ship in our hearts but there’s the bittersweet taste of it not being oficially canon. we know it was officially meant to be, but no one has ever confirmed it because that’s how romance is played in this show (McGee and Abby were really dating in season 1 and we never saw a date or a kiss. nothing.). but anyone from the directive/writing/producing team could go on twitter, and say “Gibbs was in love with Kate.” “Kate was in love with Gibbs.” “They were dating/They dated.” and it would make us so. fucking. happy.
but they don’t, because a lot of them were brought in after season 2 (which means a lot of the original members were “fired”, story for another day number 3) and didn’t live through those first 2 years, and also because the Kibbs fandom is small and we don’t make as much noise as other fandoms. (but we’re just as passionate, and we may forgive, but we never forget.)
I’m kinda sorry this got so long, anon, but I kinda don’t. I hope this was useful to you and it made you part of the Kibbs fandom, or at least made you wanna watch Kate’s seasons. or even if you don’t like Kibbs, I think the first season is NCIS’ best season, so give it a try!
tl;dr: Kibbs was officially the OG ship of the show. a lot of behind the scenes drama happened (you can ask me about it). the kibbs fandom is cute af and we’ll be waiting for the Kibbs confirmation until the day we die.

Jamie Johnson 5x07 Review
Tonight was a historic ep which saw Dillon Simmonds come out as gay and marks a major step forward for Jamie Johnson and the CBBC. For those of you who are trying to fill the Love Victor shaped hole in your hearts, Jamie Johnson is well worth watching and still has 6 eps left this season with a 6th season already confirmed. Let’s dig in!
After 43 eps of amazing character growth, Dillon Simmonds leads Phoenix to victory as they take the Cup and afterwards scores a personal triumph as he gathers the courage to come out as gay to Elliot. It’s hard to understate what a bold move this is for the show, to have a main character who’s been there right from the pilot, who was hated by the audience and is now a fan favourite, to now have him come out as gay. For a show that is targeted towards young boys this is an especially important move as it tears down stereotypes about gay people and it confronts the audience with the question of whether they’ll stop watching Dillon’s story now just because he’s gay. And kudos for the writers for not saving this for the final season, with at least one more season left they’ll have no choice but to develop this story line further
The reception on social media seems mostly positive and the CBBC to its credit has been promoting Dillon coming out with gay abandon. There are quite a few heartbroken Duby shippers but they really should have jumped ship after Ruby point blank said that she was over Dillon in 5x01. To be fair, I do get why Dillon being gay would come as a surprise; there really were no hints that Dillon was gay until S4; I don’t it’s a coincidence that S4 sees Dillon’s mom replaced with his homophobic dad and little brother. Which in all likelihood is because the writers never planned for Dillon to be gay until then. And S4 does end with Ruby still clearly crushing on Dillon and Sienna suggesting to her that Dillon likes her back which is then promptly dropped in S5. Most likely the writers didn’t have permission when writing S4 to go the route they’ve gone now and were planning to use Ruby to be the catalyst in Dillon’s coming out story by asking him out or something
Luckily we get to see this much more interesting story line. I have to blindly hope that the promo for next week is misleading and that Elliot isn’t going to out Dillon to Ruby. Fwiw someone commented on the CBBC insta post about Dillon coming out and said that they really hope Elliot wouldn’t out Dillon because that would go against the message the CBBC and the show is pushing about respecting people’s coming out journeys and the CBBC liked the comment. And even if Ruby found out Dillon was gay it’s not like she’d go and tell his dad that Dillon was hanging out with Elliot
I’m agnostic on the future of Delliot. I can’t ignore the built in escape hatch the show has with Elliot just being in town until his mom recovers; it’s not like a kid getting to go back home with his mom isn’t a happy ending. On the other hand it does seem somewhat pointless to have given Elliot a fleshed out personality and hobbies and to have given him and Dillon a connection if Elliot is just supposed to be Dillon’s gay Sherpa. The show has also really not done much in the way of ships but then again they had no problem having Dillon briefly date Indira and also be somewhat romantically linked to Sienna. As it looks like Dillon will end up at Foxborough it seems likely that S6 will delve into homophobia in sports and unless Dillon gets publicly outed there would have to be something that spurs him coming out; it’s not like his dad would spread that news around. Dillon wanting to date Elliot and not wanting to keep that part of his life a secret would be a good reason for him to come out. In conclusion, the future of Delliot is a land of contrasts
Jamie was really living up to Dillon’s old description of him as a sullen kid with a rubbish haircut. I’d say that he was treating Boggy like a dog but I don’t think Jamie would yell at a dog like that #justiceforboggy. Idk Jamie I think your deadbeat dad might be the one to blame for the accident. He really needs a wake up call and hopefully Boggy’s anxiety story line will see Jamie realizing what a great mate Boggy has been and will see him trying to make amends
Zoe made strides in being a better teammate with Kat but the longer she puts off returning the pendant the more it’s gonna blow up in her face when she does
Liam cheering for Foxborough over Phoenix was ruthless but very funny
It really is fascinating how little Jamie we saw this ep and how he’s not even shown in the promo for next week. There must be some difference in how tv contracts are structured in Britain compared to America because this would never happen on an American show. It’s great though and allows Jamie Johnson to be a true ensemble show, which will help greatly in S6 and hopefully beyond as the older kids will no longer all be playing on the same team
I’m not shocked that the show introduced a straight ship to balance out the gay story line but I am shocked that it was with Eric of all people. I’m not sure what the long term plan with it is but we’ll see what happens
Looking Ahead:
Mr. Simmonds telling Liam that he has the perfect role model in Dillon is pretty funny considering what we as the audience know about Dillon and about his father. Of course, Dillon and his journey to being a better person really is the perfect role model for Liam on his own redemption arc. It seems like Liam tells his dad that Dillon was hanging with Elliot instead of training but I’m not sure if Liam overhears their conversation and outs Dillon to their dad or if the dad somehow figures it out some other way or if Dillon comes out for whatever reason or if their dad doesn’t find out yet. It’s almost impossible to imagine him being supportive when he does find out and I wonder what that arc towards acceptance looks like for Mr. Simmonds
It’s going to be great to see two gay kids discussing their sexualities, it’s something that has still yet to happen on Disney since Love Victor was moved to Hulu. After next week all of Dillon’s scenes from the S5 trailer will have been shown with the exception of some clips of him playing a soccer game in a blue uniform at night against a team in red. You’d think the red team would be Foxborough but so I wonder who the blue team is (could be a dream sequence)
Looks like Liam also ends up with Eric for a bit. I’m sure that Liam will play an important role in Dillon’s coming out story and likely ends up defending Dillon to their dad but who knows how it all plays out, we’re in uncharted waters now
Until next week Jamie Johnsoners

So we watched (nay, Experienced) the BBC/Netflix Dracula series
Brought to us by everyone’s favourite team, Steve Moff and Mark Gatiss, promising to be an innovative and exciting new vision of the classic novel
Boy it was definitely something!!!
First I will say: obviously Moff is not my favourite TV writer and my fam and I did go into this with a bias. I’m happy to report, though, that it’s going to be one of these shows that haunts me forever, because if it had just been bad I could have said “bleh” and deleted it from my brain. But because parts of this were genuinely cool, interesting, and fun, and parts of it genuinely had potential, all the bits that were bad stand out as so much worse and the whole thing feels as cursed as a 500 year old undead count.
Things that were enjoyable and well put-together:
Van Helsing has been gender-swapped into a vampire-hunting nun and her cat-and-mouse game with Dracula is rife with belligerent sexual tension. I was ready to hate this, and ready for like, Sherlock and Irene Adler 2.0, but their dynamic was actually pretty fun to watch! Their power balance is kept even throughout most of the show, and Helsing is never struck down because of ~womanly failings~ or infantilised. She’s consistently really clever and, even if there are some cringey one-liners, I found her and Draccy’s playful quest to murder each other one of the most fun parts of the show. It could’ve been better, but it was enjoyable! (I also like how Helsing isn’t Young and Hot, but is a capable older lady, and her actor and Draccy’s even seem about the same age. Amazing)
The second episode is a spooky murder mystery/horror mini-movie on a ship, with a cast full of interesting characters who all had different things going on and different relationship dynamics that were compelling to watch. There’s even an interracial gay couple! And they’re like, written pretty sympathetically and to be layered and flawed in ways that didn’t feel too stereotypical! And they don’t die first!! Wack! I understand the bar is on the ground, but it’s still worth a mention
Some fun with vampire lore: Draccy absorbs knowledge and traits from people he drinks blood from (which is how he learns languages. Get Duolingo, dude, stop eating people), leading to the intriguing suggestion that myths like “vampires will die in sunlight” and “vampires are afraid of holy symbols” have kinda become real to him even if they don’t literally work, because he’s swallowed so many people to whom these superstitions and beliefs were law. I’m sure this isn’t the first time this has been done, but groundbreaking or no it was kinda neat
Things that were not enjoyable and well put-together:
EVERYTHING ELSE
Episode 1: a weird speedrun of most of the original novel, feat. weaponised nuns and a weird fixation on whether or not Jonathan Harker and Draccy boned. They did not. Dracula pops out of the body of a wolf and he’s Whole Ass Naked. Him and Van Helsing have a power play where she stands just on the threshold of a convent and calls him a little bitch, knowing he can’t come and get her. A knife is licked.
Episode 2: aforementioned cool ship horror story. Definitely the best ep. It really makes me think about hbomb’s critique that Moff is pretty good at doing standalone stories (and pilots), but when things are tied into a bigger narrative things get zonkers.
Episode 3: Things Get Zonkers!!
Let me just. Okay. I have the most to say about this one because this is where things really got batshit. And yet, also really boring? How does that figure? Anyway:
Dracula emerges from under the sea and finds that 123 years have passed and he’s now the star of a Modern AU. Upon setting foot on British sand he is immediately accosted by what appears to be an anti-vampire task force. There’s a helicopter. It is later explained how they knew to pounce on him at this exact moment, but holy god it was wild to watch the entire British Secret Service descend on this one wet bastard in a suit
The editing shifts aggressively in the direction of Sherlock. Mark Gattis is there playing an amazingly annoying character. There’s a fuckign.... Underground Secret Society devoted to studying vampires and they put Drac in a Designated Glass Prison for Smug Geniuses (also as seen in Sherlock). Van Helsing is dead but her great-great-grand-niece is played by the same actress and. Okay. Van Helsing, vampire hunting nun, possesses her descendent and rises through the ether to roast Drac one last time, and he’s DELIGHTED TO SEE HER AGAIN.
And she has cancer, right, so her blood is poisonous when Draccy tries to bite her, but in the end, right, the end of the episode, right, the final shots of the show, he comes to a place where he’s willing to die, and she’s already dying, and so he drinks her blood and they die together on a table while cinematic metaphor vision shows them having sex in the middle of the sun
Tumblr media
There was a badly CGI-ed vampire baby. Jonathan Harker falls from a tower and a scene later they flash back to this event by reversing the footage of him falling down, meaning we just see him go VWOOP up through the air, bouncing off the wall on the way. Van Helsing says the words “come boy, suckle” when she’s goading Drac into drinking her blood. The show sits in a weird middle ground where the characters talk about sex a lot (”dID yOu HaVe sExUaL iNterCOURSE with COUNT DRACULA?”) and Drac is clearly meant to be super magnetic and sexy but the characterisation and cinematography is not horny at all. People have these sexy-type dreams of their lover of choice when Drac is drinking their blood but even those are very boring and weirdly chaste, except of course for the final one where, if I  can take the chance to remind you, Van Helsing and Dracula have symbolic Mind Palace sex inside the centre of the solar system
Tumblr media
I can’t speak too much on its quality as an adaptation since I actually haven’t read the book, but splitting the story so that some characters (the Harkers, Van Helsing) existed in the time the story is set, and some (Lucy, Dr Seward) exist in The Modern AU felt very strange. Was there any reason to set the third episode in modern times, apart from the fact that I guess they wanted to do their Sherlock thing again? Or, perhaps, because they wanted to do their Jekyll thing again?? Oh my god, that’s what the editing reminds me of - the small clips of Jekyll I’ve seen. The zooming. The slow-mo. The emphasis on The Monster Man’s weird goddamn teeth
(Also, I don’t really feel qualified to dig too deep into it, but I will say there felt something a bit uncomfortable about Lucy being black in this version, while also being written to be very promiscuous and vain. idk. Also, since it happened in an ep of Sherlock as well, “weedy white Nice Boy rescues the Very Cool woman of colour he has a tragically unrequited crush on” is now an official Moffattis trope)
Count Moffatula is an experience. Its pacing is buck wild. The speeding through the original plot and the mish-mashing of elements in the Modern AU section feels like another expression of contempt for the source material on Moff’s part. Someone says “reality is overrated” in a show set in the 1890s. Draccy quotes a Beatles song. He also makes quippy allusions to having eaten various famous figures and basically winks at the camera every time. Granted, this wasn’t as obnoxious as I was maybe expecting, but there are still too many lines of dialogue where you think “oh, the writers high-fived each other after they wrote that one, huh”. The fact that Moff has such vitriol against fan fic writers is more and more grating every day because this is so, so clearly a zany-ass fanfic that he happens to be getting paid for. The costumes are nowhere near as nice as they could have been, and Dracula’s cape looks like his mum made it for him for the school play in which he is playing Dracula.
This show is So Much. Watch it to share in this fever dream. Or don’t, and save approximately 5 hours of your life. God. 5 hours. Who was I before Count Maffatula. Who am I now. Why was his cape so bloody ugly. Why did they bone in the centre of the sun

Yeah I totally agree with you, like I understand what they were trying to do with some of the stuff they did but mostly it made no sense. In the part before the finale they kept talking about how it was supposed to call back to their earlier seasons but the only callback I saw was Sam putting the pie in deans face and even that felt awkward. But then that’s maybe also why none of them have posted on their social media. I saw a post that said they also didn’t like the finale - so maybe they agree
And in the time it took me to respond, I know at least Jensen Ackles has shared a social media post with the rebar! I also watched that clip with him talking about calling up Eric Kripke to talk about the ending.
Honestly, though, a la Game of Thrones, however the actors feel, I don’t know if they’ll ever speak against it aside from maybe adding some of their character headcanons. Given how much of their lives they put into the show I’m sure they need to embrace the ending as much as possible. Kind of like how you can’t control some of lives’ own endings- they may frustrate you *forever* & it’ll still come up 20 years down the line, but you need to move on. And how the actors really feel doesn’t really change fan feeling, though I fully get both the curiosity and the impulse to want them to agree and be one of the fans on that.
...that said, my read on Jensen Ackles calling up Eric Kripke is that sounds like a Hail Mary attempt for a better ending, and it’s cool to hear he made that regardless of what we actually got.
There were more callbacks than I realize as I’ve gone through online - for the ridiculous # of times I’ve seen the pilot I cannot *believe* I did not catch “I can’t do this without you”/”Yes, you can”/”Well, I don’t want to” !, but I was very much distracted by the rebar in the moment. I appreciate the callbacks but I can’t say it makes me like the writing any better.
...also I was scrolling through Reddit to catch callbacks, and... Reddit seems to have liked the episode? ...I don’t get it. My siblings & I are in consensus of “oh, this is yikes.” My opinion’s really not about ships (or even character happiness!) but about the writing. There are character endings that punch me in the soul but stick with me, & I wouldn’t want them changed, because of the *writing*.
...& sometimes a character escapes death at the last second or gets some other reprieve, and my soul goes, “oh. that’s nice. That is nice. ...but also I was braced for the follow-through and now I’m a little disappointed we didn’t get it.”
For example: the Raven Cycle (which I love & mull over that ending a lot, but also the loss promised in the first book did not *quite* happen). Doctor Who: don’t get me wrong, I loved Rose’s return & second ending in Doctor Who, but it didn’t compare to the first goodbye on that beach. Everything ever that starts with “this is how I died” and then does not really kill that character, not for keeps... I’m always torn as more than half of me is usually rooting for that character but deep down I’m looking for that follow through.
I think Supernatural wanted both that follow through *and* the character happiness, hence the afterlife ending.
(...I’ve since remembered Arrow *also* did the afterlife ending, so between that, TVD, & this -- and even The 100 did a weird heaven-on-earth as chosen over digital afterlife option? What’s up with all the afterlife endings, The CW??
I only sometimes watched The Originals for establishing shots in New Orleans of it all, but apparently if I had to vote for an emotionally-resonant ending in recent years on The CW, that would be my pick?!)
I realize I keep rambling about this (sorry, any followers out there wondering what’s up with all the sudden texts) but my take on Dean’s death will forever be: “cool concept, lousy execution, please see Buffy season 5 and your own season 5 for comparison”.
I see that Kripke’s recently said:
“There’s only one scene that I haven’t done that I would’ve done for the end of the show. And I’m certainly not going to give it away, maybe one day I will. But I can assure the fans that my ending was so much darker than the ending they’re going with. So anyone who’s like, ‘Kripke should’ve ended it,’ I’m like, ‘You would’ve hated my ending!’ Because it was a horror movie and it was going to have a horror movie ending. So I can promise you the ending you’ll love much more than if you had let me end the show.”
...Goddammit. That is ominous (I don’t even like horror movies! I also did not like the secret ending Amy Palladino of Gilmore Girls held onto and teased and let drop in the Netflix special, so I should be skeptical!) and yet. I feel like that’s more the follow through I’m looking for.
It’s not about me, of course, but personal perspective of looking up to the writing of early Supernatural and cringing at the last two eps... I’d take it. It’s not that I want a dark(er) ending; but the finale managed at once to feel too dark & not dark enough in its choices, to me. & given Kripke’s Supernatural was just the right amount of darkness for me... I’d bet I wouldn’t hate his ‘one scene’.

August 20: 1x11 The Menagerie Part 1
Hello time for Spock’s Mutiny Part One
That is a LOT of 50s looking sci fi background to hit with me all at once.
Spock with his carefully neutral face like ‘hmmm? a distress signal that did not come from here? how COULD that be?’
Kirk and Spock tilt their heads at the exact same time lol.
“Subspace chatter.” Please, Commodore, call it what it is, “gossip.”
“We met when he was promoted to Fleet Captain.” Okay so he was promoted, but to a weird rank that literally only exists for like two people in Star Trek I guess. (I had to look it up because I don’t know what a Fleet Captain is lol.)
I don’t understand how Pike could be the same age as Jim and yet hold the Captain’s position for 11+ years before Jim was promoted like??? Did he become a Captain faster than AOS!Kirk? Also, he looked like he was Jim’s age now in those tapes from 13 years ago. He cannot possibly be in his mid-30s now, or he’d be in his early 20s on the Talos tapes, and also, younger than Spock. So either I misheard or...it’s wrong. I guess it was supposed to mean that he was, at the time Spock served with him, the same age Jim is now?? But it shows up in a weird place to be making that point.
Oh, Spock’s mentor. The emotion.
And so begins Spock’s amazing cavalcade of lies, lies, and more lies. Doesn’t even look like it’s hard. He’d basically do anything for his replacement father.
Pike must be the only other person Spock has ever served under.
I love it when they argue about records and log books. Like, this sort of bureaucratic dueling makes up a lot more of the TOS plot than people think. The record logs must have been changed because Spock never lies!
Love that Kirk and Mendez are fighting and Mendez just yells “Well you’re right!” and that’s the end of the argument.
Is this the same Jose who wanted his peppers in another episode?
Spock is so supremely sneaky here. Mission Impossible theme plays as he skulks around and messes with the computers.
Okay, that little flirting thing with Miss Piper and the mention of “Helen” and Kirk looking briefly worried about what Helen might have said about him--that does make him look a little slutty. So he loves love okay guys!!!
That scenery out the window omg 1954 called it wants its illustrations back.
All these dumbasses on the bridge and only Uhura is suspicious.
Spock is so exasperated. All these questions! Good thing he has a fake recording of the Captain telling them all to just listen to Spock. He really thought of everything.
Kirk is looking very handsome and thoughtful. (My mom: finally a man who can think and still look fine.) He’s so distressed at the idea of Spock doing something bad.
This Bones and Kirk scene. I’m so distracted by their insistence that Vulcans can’t lie. I mean have you considered that when they told you they can’t lie.... they were lying??? Also lol @ the idea of Spock’s human side being “completely submerged.” That’s another lie he’s telling you Bones!
Love Bones defending Spock though. “He would never make a false entry! This is the LOGS were talking about here!” He adores Spock too.
That’s a cool little secret book they got there.
Kirk’s face when the Enterprise leaves without him!
Self-driving Enterprise.
I love how everyone is just unaware of the mutiny lol. Just cackling at Spock’s blatant and constant lies. “I’ve placed myself in command of the Enterprise.” Sitting in The Chair.
I’m sorry but I’m laughing so hard at all of this. He made sure to lure Bones back onto the ship with the vaguest of messages just so he could be like “Look, friend, I have a secret... I stole a Captain!”
Lol Jim following in the shuttlecraft. Can’t get rid of him that easily! Also I love the shuttle design. Adorable.
Oh no, Jim’s in danger! You can tell from Spock’s face that this was a crimp in his plan that he did not entirely expect. (I do think he figured he’d be court-martialed eventually but this specifically, Jim not turning back when he ran out of fuel, I think did throw him.)
Jim, caring more about Spock than about himself.
Bones like “hmmm who could it POSSIBLY be in the shuttle?”
“I never received orders to take command. Just went ahead and did it.”
Well this is an awkward situation!
Bones: “Well, confine him!”
Uhura’s reaction lol. Always a cutie.
Dammit I’m a doctor, not an arresting officer.
Scotty muttering (possibly his only line in this ep)
Spock’s weird statue. Lurking in the background while Spock somehow spies on the transporter room from his room? With a camera that can zoom in and out for dramatic effect?
So Spock thought it was possible Jim would follow him, so he made his mutiny impossible to undo.
Weird how they yet again call Spock a lieutenant commander when his rank stripes have always indicated he’s a commander.
I love when they discuss regulations. These nerds! They locate so much drama in it and the JD in me is having a damn good time.
I feel like this is the closest Jim and Spock have ever come to fighting. DENIED!
Oooh fancy dress time.
I feel like Spock is having a good time here lol. He lives for the drama.
He’d make a good lawyer. Kirk would too.”Commodore, you’ve opened the door” takes me back to Evidence.
And now, 13 years ago...
Jim, you’re ruining the DRAMA with your interruptions!
“Could you be biased because he’s your personal friend? Your special friend? Your best buddy Spock?”
This pilot looks like it was made 10 years before The Corbomite Maneuver or even Where No Man.
Young Spock wants to go exploring on the new planet! Kirk 100% would have gone, like, no question.
What kind of random ass outfits were those? Tennis Sunday on the Enterprise?
Look at that close up shot of the communicator. My flip phone c. 2032.
Gotta flop on the bed in the most photogenic way possible. Google Earth, always taking pictures.
This doctor is so obviously proto-Bones. And Pike IS Kirk but whinier and without that Shatner charm.
Swords and armor and deserted fortresses?? What?
This whole ep just reads as SUCH a rough first draft.
Knowing what we know about Spock, I almost doubt there was a distress message lol.
Time warp factor 7.
Court of space law.
Literally can’t believe they watched a 10 minute clip of Pike whining as part of this actual legal proceeding.
Kirk’s probably very curious to see more of Spock in his 20s.
Spock’s eyeshadow at the trial is super on point.
I can’t believe Pike has literal papers lol. Like papers made out of paper. They have printers in deep space?
Their little away team jackets, so cute.
More 50s sci fi backgrounds! I feel like people who think TOS is dated or ages badly need to watch this and, to a lesser extent, Where No Man. I think it shows just how much TOS did its own thing bc those pilots really took from the recent sci fi landscape, whereas TOS created its own thing. I think that’s why TNG looks more dated to me--it seems of a piece with other 90s media, whereas, aside from stuff like the hairstyles or the miniskirts, TOS doesn’t look 60s and it doesn’t look like other contemporary genre work.
Pretty blue flowers that make music make Spock smile--that’s my favorite part of the whole pilot. He’s so cute.
 A GIRL.
I love that reveal that the transmissions are coming from Talos IV because it means that Spock, while on trial for mutiny and an attempted capital offense, commits ANOTHER capital offense AS PART OF his trial. The balls.
“I respectfully decline.”
Literally the only time he freaks out about anything is when Jim is blamed. I mean truly his plan is at least 50% more complicated than it had to be solely to protect Jim. And now the Captain is going down with him, and he’s mad at him!! A cliffhanger for sure.
Honestly, even the power of Jim just standing alone in the room.... Underrated.
“To be concluded next week.”

HSMTMTS 1x04 Review
Blocking was a very emotional ep that featured some strong performances. Let’s dig in!
Very strong work from Joshua Bassett tonight. We can see throughout the ep how Ricky is desperately trying to keep it together; ending the ep with Ricky hugging a pillow holding back tears was quite the gut punch. Not a lot of shows oriented to a youngish audience actually tackle divorce itself, usually we see the aftermath, and I think it’s great that HSMTMTS is actually delving into the early stages of a divorce when things are at their worst.
Ricky’s actions tonight were right in line with what a real 16 year old boy would likely do so kudos to the writers for that. And of course it helps that Joshua is a teenager and looks like one. Case in point was Ricky sincerely believing that his parents could still work things out; obviously an adult would have realized that Mrs. Bowen moving halfway across the country months ago was the point of no return for that marriage. It’s in character for Ricky that his first instinct is to run but we do see some growth when he ultimately realizes that he does need to go home.
I really liked the writing for Ricky’s parents and Carol in this ep. I liked that the Bowen's were trying their best to make sure Ricky knew that none of this was his fault and that they loved him; they clearly had gone over what they should say with their therapist but once their plans went awry they scrambled and as most people would, they did a bad job of improvising. On the flip side their plan to spring the news on Ricky at a restaurant was a horrible choice; it makes some sense if they thought a neutral location would be less fraught but a heavy conversation like that should have been done in the privacy of their own home. It’s a nice little touch of imperfection. Very telling that Mrs. Bowen didn’t let Mr. Bowen know that she caught an earlier flight, for most people it would be routine to let their spouse know they’d be home early but it’s a sign that she no longer thinks of him as her husband. I liked that Carol was gentle but firm with Nini in telling her that her day wasn’t as bad as Ricky’s and I liked that she called Mr. Bowen after Ricky showed up which is what most parents would have done.
Great ep for Nicky shippers. Their conversation at Nini’s was the most emotionally vulnerable moment we’ve seen on the show so far. It was nice to see Ricky open up to Nini and tell her that it’s only with her that he feels comfortable talking about this stuff and their embrace was very sweet; you can really tell how much they still mean to each other. As awkward as it was I did like that aborted kiss. It wasn’t the right time but they did have a real moment. We know Miss Jenn added a kiss to the end of the musical which is likely where we’ll see them kiss but I wonder if we’ll see Nini initiate it rather than Ricky, especially since we’re clearly building towards Ricky telling Nini that he loves her. I’m also curious to see if Nini can in fact recover Ricky’s voicemail.
Olivia Rodrigo did so great writing and singing All I Want. Wise for Tim Federle to ask her to write a song for the show and I can’t wait to hear the song that her and Joshua co-wrote later in the season. As Nini said, the song is still about Ricky but he needs to meet her halfway if they’re going to work. And she did a great job with What I’ve Been Looking For, I’ve never heard such a passive aggressive performance, I was chuckling the whole time.
It does look like NJ is broken up, though I hope we get explicit confirmation in the next ep. EJ giving a girl good poisoning so Nini could have the lead role in the summer camp musical was a great twist. It really paints his behaviour in the past 3 eps in a whole new light, knowing that he was both that ruthless and that dedicated to Nini. Obviously Nini has the talent to be the lead as she showed with her vocal theatrics at the end of What I’ve Been Looking For but would she have had the confidence to audition for Gabriella if she hadn’t won the lead at camp thanks to EJ’s plotting? Good on Nini for blocking EJ’s number. EJ really needs a wake up call, stealing Nini’s phone and deleting deleting Ricky’s voicemail was bad enough but giving a girl food poisoning? That crosses a ton of lines.
Really not sure what Gina’s grand plan is. Presumably she wants her and EJ to win homecoming king and queen which is supposed to make Nini jealous and spur her to try and get back with EJ? But Gina’s goal is to be Gabriella so it’s not in her best interest to push Nini back with either EJ or Ricky. Gina’s home is small, presumably her family isn’t well off.
Did not expect to see a flashback to Nini and EJ kissing alone in a tent at night. Pretty spicy for Disney.
Loved Ricky wearing Carol’s Salt Lake Pride shirt. Even a little thing like that would never have been allowed on Disney Channel.
Lots of little funny moments this ep. The whole emotional support hamster thing was funny as was Miss Jenn threatening to bring in her emotional support coyote. Seb’s facial expressions during Nini and EJ’s duet were funny and I chuckled at his line about the hamster being easy to find if he was smiling.
Not sure if Miss Jenn’s family backstory will ever be relevant but interesting to learn that she never knew her biological father. I also liked the little reminder of her poverty when she said that protein bar was her dinner.
Big Red was funny this ep with him not understanding theatre lingo. If Natalie is back is he still stage manager?
Kourtney gets some fleshing out this ep. It’s still obvious that her character having an expanded role past the pilot was a late addition to the show but I wonder what the writers would have done without her as Nini would have needed some sort of confidant.
We also got a date for the dance on the poster, October 9th, which fits with the timeline so far and puts opening night in around 6 weeks from then. I always like when shows actually put effort into their timelines. Far too many shows mess up their timelines and its always a sign of sloppy writers and often shows contempt for their audiences.
Looking Ahead:
Seblos starts next week, I’m pleasantly surprised they’re showing it in the next ep promo. I don’t know if we’ve seen Seb in any of the clips of Carlos’ big homecoming dance routine so we’ll see if he actually attends. It will be very interesting to see what happens with Seblos this season and over the course of the rest of the series.
Really hope that they won’t make EJ and Gina a thing, that age gap between the actors is even worse than the one between EJ and Nini.
We know Ricky goes with Big Red and that Miss Jenn and Nini and Kourtney go out for a girls night and Miss Jenn runs into Mr. Bowen at the bowling alley. Hopefully nothing romantic comes of that.
There’s an actress credited as Sharpay’s mom for 1x05 and I’ve always been confused just what exactly that means. Is she Seb’s mom? Is she the in universe actress who had some minor role as Sharpay’s mom in the movies?
Matt has said that EJ and Carlos have some important scenes together and the dance might be where some of those happen. Maybe EJ encourages Carlos to dance like everyone’s watching? Mr. Mazzara is chaperoning so I could see Carlos wanting to stick it to him.
Until next week wildcats

HSM:TM:TS 1x01 Review
The Auditions was a great series premiere for High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and I’m very excited for all that’s to come. Let’s dig in!
Disney certainly got its money worth with this show. The gorgeous Utah scenery and actual on location filming really helps ground the series with a sense of realism. To that end, I really liked the little details, like the principal not wanting to spend anything on the musical, the kids social media use, and that the kids actually look like regular kids who live in regular houses and go to a regular high school
Such a talented cast! Olivia Rodrigo is a showstopper, what a wonderful rendition of Start of Something New that was and Joshua Bassett seems born to play Ricky. Sofia is an amazing dancer and I’m excited to see some of the productions they put on later in the season
Miss Jenn reminds me of April Rhodes from Glee and I mean that as a compliment. Her delivery of, ‘’that is so fresh’’ still makes me laugh. I love that she cast Ricky as Troy on a whim for maximum drama and  of course she wants a Ms. Darbus song, she’s an agent of chaos and I’m here for it. I also liked her begging her mom for car loan payment money, you’re not really a millennial if you haven’t lived pay cheque to cheque at some point
Even though we’ve seen them in the trailer, Carlos’ first 15 minutes of both sequels and Broadway lines still made me chuckle
I like the glimpses we get of the kids home lives. Very refreshing to see Nini’s two moms and see that she has a mixed race family and with Andi Mack off of Disney Channel, tonight’s showing of HSMTMTS might be the last time any kind of lgbtq rep is seen on Disney Channel itself for quite a while. Her grandma looks too young to be in a nursing home but it was nice to see her helping Nini with her self-confidence. Poor Ricky with his parents marriage collapsing, that’s gonna be a tearjerker if and when his mom returns from Chicago to officially end things with his dad. Seems like Gina’s mom has high expectations of her which eventually lead to their scene we saw in the promo where Gina breaks down
We dove right into the love triangle at the heart of this season: Nicky vs NJ. As I was watching the first flashback scene between Nini and Ricky, I thought to myself that if they keep writing them scenes like this I just might become Nicky trash, I was trying to stay neutral but after Ricky’s audition I’m definitely team Ricky, that really was the #ultimatecomeback. Ricky singing ‘’I Think I Kind of You Know’’, the song Nini wrote for him was just too sweet; it warmed even my cold, black heart. And that shot of Ricky and EJ lighting Nini with their phones and forming a triangle? Poetic cinema
It really does seem like Nicky is the endgame ship with NJ just an obstacle in its path especially with Nini having been in love with Ricky just six weeks ago and only having met EJ four weeks ago. EJ is very supportive of Nini and I did like how sweet he is with her, that line about her being a cute chorus cow was great. I saw on Disney +’s twitter poll that the fandom is split about 66% team Ricky to 33% team EJ which is an interesting split but also reflects the writing tipping it’s hand, it does want us to like NJ but not at the expense of Nicky
One thing that I don’t like so far is the age gap between Olivia and Matt, she’s 16 and he’s 21 and they both look their age. I’m not saying that all teen roles need to be played by teens but that age gap is significant when they’re playing girlfriend and boyfriend and was an unforced error on the shows part. It reminds me of the problems GMW suffered by casting a much older Peyton Meyer to play Riley’s love interest. Matt Cornett’s age as well as EJ being the only senior of the main cast is another hint that he won’t be playing Nini’s love interest past this season
I do hope that however this love triangle ends that it’s done as cleanly as possible. Love triangles are rarely pulled off well because the show or movie or book will usually tip its hand fairly quickly as to which is the ‘real’ ship but they also usually end up damaging the characters involved. In this case Ricky is not just a rival for Nini’s affections but a would be homewrecker who’s set out to breakup Nini and EJ which if not handled carefully could make Ricky look like a bad guy
As an aside, Nini having a shirtless photo of EJ on her phone and her and Ricky hanging out alone in her bedroom in the flashback is spicy for Disney but does at least gesture more to the reality of teen life than the typical squeaky clean Disney fare
Carlos is the colour guard captain, that was in the original casting notice (back when Carlos was named Vikram) and Tim Federle mentioned in an interview that he based Carlos off of one of his best friends who was also a colour guard captain. I’ve been wondering for a couple of weeks now if Frankie Rodriguez was actually allowed to reveal that Carlos is gay because it hasn’t been talked about in interviews or mentioned in any reviews so far. His line about EJ not knowing who he is, seems like it could potentially be set up for an arc about Carlos trying to make himself known. He knew that Seb wanted to try out for Sharpay rather than Ryan so presumably he already knows him? We know that something is being teased between him and Seb but I won’t hold my breathe for getting very much from Disney, at least this season
Not much to say about the other characters so far. Kourtney is barely a step above the sassy black friend trope but I think some of it has to due with the fact that Tim Federle originally just wanted Kourtney to be a one off supportive friend for Nini but so liked the actress that he decided to make her a main. Ashlyn is supposed to have a powerful duet with Nini in the second ep so that is something to look forward to as is her relationship with her cousin EJ. Big Red is a nice supportive friend and that’s about it. Not much to Mr. Mazara either. It does seem like the dividing line between major and lesser main characters are those who have lead roles in the musical itself
I love that the mockumentary interviews happen even when they make absolutely no sense in universe
We get some full character names from the cast list: Seb Matthew- Smith, Ricky Bowen, EJ Caswell, Gina Porter, and Nini Salazar-Roberts
Looking Ahead:
I read in reviews that EJ teams up with Gina to take down Ricky while Gina tries to take down Nini. That’s a pretty easy path to villainize EJ and sink NJ eventually while then using EJ’s panic attacks and Gina’s story line with her mom to build them back up. I sincerely hope that they don’t even try to go for one sided Gina and EJ as Sofia is the youngest cast member
Sofia did say that Gina would make things complicated for the love triangle and in a promo clip she said she was ‘intrigued’ by Ricky so we’ll see what happens
Miss Jenn supposedly left New York in unclear circumstances so I wonder where they’ll go with that. My own theory is that she used to be an extra on Law and Order: SVU and was having a torrid affair with Dan Florek before being exposed
I’ll try to have these reviews up Friday evenings but that’s dependent on when I can watch the eps. Because the pilot aired on tv we’ll actually get ratings either Monday or Tuesday which will be the only time we’ll get publicly released data otherwise all we’ll get is what Disney wants us to know and that will often just be spin. I’m very excited for this season and for season two and I can’t wait to see what’s ahead. Until next week wildcats
