I’m so glad the Guillermo Del Toro Pinocchio movie is being received really well, because it was literally my most anticipated movie of the year! So here’s some fun facts about the crew, concept, and production that got me excited about this movie and that I think would excite much of tumblr as well:

-the screenplay was cowritten by Del Toro and Patrick McHale, creator of Over The Garden Wall and a writer on Adventure Time.

-the movie was codirected by Mark Gustasfon, who was the animation director of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)

-the primary art/animation designers of this movie (production designer Curt Enderle, art director Robert DeSue, character designer Georgina Hayns, animation supervisor Brian Leif Hansen, and photography director Frank Passingham) previously worked on projects that include Coraline, the Corpse Bride, Paranorman, Isle of Dogs, Frankenweenie, Kubo, and Chicken Run.

-Besides Netflix, it was produced by the Henson company (always a good sign when you’re doing anything with puppets) and ShadowMachine, who have produced a lot of Adult Swim shows including Robot Chicken, Moral Orel, and Tuca and Bertie, as well as the Netflix original BoJack Horseman.

-Del Toro was inspired to make this adaptation due to the similarities he’d always noticed between the original Pinocchio story and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Both are about a man-made character’s relationship with his father/creator, and his attempts to understand what it means to be human. This inspiration is why the film takes on a gothic feel at times.

-the movie is over 10 years in the making. Del Toro announced the project in 2008 and production began in 2012, but it went into development hell and no further updates were made for several years. Del Toro has described it as his passion project, saying "I've wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember.”

-the backdrop of Mussolini’s Italy was intended to show how Pinnochio was able to find his own humanity and will in a time where everyone else was acting like a blindly obedient puppet. Del Toro wanted to deviate from the original book’s themes of obeying authority by making his Pinocchio virtuous for questioning the rules and forging his own set of morals. (Also if you know anything about Del Toro, the guy likes to dunk on fascism.)

-Del Toro didn’t feel the need to have Pinocchio become flesh-and-blood at the end of the movie, saying all you need to be a real human is to behave like one.

I was lucky enough to see this movie in 35 mm in a movie theatre on Thanksgiving weekend. If there are any movie theatre showings near you and you’re in a position to be able to attend them, I would totally recommend it especially if you can go with loved ones. It was a gorgeous, heartwarming, and magical movie to experience on a big screen and perfect for the late fall/winter holiday season.

🦚 - Are there any queer books/shows/etc. that you would suggest?

Oh God, so many. Not going to state the obvious since we’re both Vampire Chronicles + Interview with the vampire focused blogs, lol. I’m going to narrow it down to two

Popular rec: Our Flag Means Death. genuinely everything I could want from a tv show hhhh. Perfect blend of comedy and genuine emotion and angst. This show fucks so hard! But everyone on tumblr’s watched it by now lol, so here’s smth nobody knows about.

Obscure rec: Everything’s going to be ok. I haven’t watched this show in a while but I remember after I did I was so mad about the lack of fandom or online attention haha. Extremely sweet and lighthearted, gives you all the warm and fuzzy feels. I remember the casual rep of lgbt ppl and autistic ppl blew my mind lol, might be the only show I’ve ever seen with multiple (canonical) queer autistic ppl in it.

🏳️‍⚧️ - What Flag do you think has the best color scheme?

Mmm, I’m gonna say the lesbian pride flag, gay man pride flag, and bi-gender pride flag have the nicest color schemes. I like the flags that look like an artist’s color palette.

🌈 - What's a Queer Identity, Experience or a piece of History you feel deserves more recognition? I hyper-fixated on researching the Hays Code for a while, and don’t see it referenced nearly enough when it comes to online debates about what is and isn’t acceptable to be portrayed in media, so imma go with that. If you don’t know the Hays Code was a list enforced from 1934-1968 that restricted what could be portrayed in Hollywood movies based on Catholic moral principles. There’s a lot of banned topics and I’m not going to go into them all, but the general gist of it was violence, profanity, sexuality, and any type of crime should never be portrayed in movies unless non ambiguously condemned. The belief behind it was that media had the power to make people do Bad Things so they need to be very careful in spelling out morals to audiences unless they get ideas. (Fun fact: the Hays code is why in old sitcoms couples often slept in separate beds. That’s how strict it was!) The reason I’m talking about this as “queer history” is bcus queerness of any kind was also forbidden under the Hayes code, “sexual perversions” weren’t allowed. Of course, unless, the queer person was the villain, and punished for their crimes. This is where queer coding originated from, particularly queer coded villains. Queer artists wanted to portray themselves and their communities in their work, and the only way to do that oftentimes was by “coding”. I think looking into the Hays code would be beneficial for some ppl online, bcus I oftentimes see ppl use actual Hays Code talking points on tumblr.com in the year 2023 sincerely and without self awareness and it’s hilarious.

TL;DR: my overall review is that it was good but I’m going to go watch DPS to cleanse me

- ok so that woman got robbed and for what

- I had to pause to find out who this detective’s actor was Bc it was driving me nuts and it’s MCMURRAY FROM LETTERKENNY???

- love that they’re gonna fuck up this train conductors day lmao

- LOVE genuinely that we’re back to looking gritty and having an old tv play the video and having some rapid cut camera work early 2000’s vibes I embrace you

- why does the voice sound like that,, I wasn’t expecting John but why is it so non threatening now it’s literally just Some Guy™️

- I am glad I paid $15 to listen to Chris Rock talk about Forrest Gump. Worth my money and I mean it genuinely I love Chris Rock he’s great. Stream Everybody Hates Chris on Hulu

you are - got7, honestly i’m sure everyone saw this coming but this song literally saved my life and i can vividly remember my jaw dropping open when i listened to it for the first time. it’s just so beautiful and the music video is incredible and got7 are my favorite people on this earth

2) one song you 😭 every time you listen or makes you emotional?

so big, so small - dear evan hansen, i don’t think i’ve ever not cried while listening to this song LMAO. i remember the first time i heard this and tears were streaming down my face and i yelled “I LOVE MY MOM!!!!!” jkfsjf it just reminds me of when my mom was a single mom and how much she’s gone through and everything she’s done for me and how she ain’t leaving me EVER!!! also fun fact i just listened again and am sobbing<3

why don’t we go there - one direction, one of one direction’s most underrated songs tbh. i’m listening now and bopping!!!! also it was between this and happily but why don’t we go there is superior and i just listened to it after crying my eyes out to the previous song so i’m feeling good !

bittersweet - zac brown band, a kpop blog referencing a country song i should be ASHAMED...but this song also makes me cry a lot and it’s abt a couple and one of them is sick & eventually passes away and it’s uh. the same story as my grandparents and there’s even a lyric that says “when i poured you across the southern sky, i couldn’t help but to cry, i know you finally got your wings” and not 2 b...soft but that’s exactly what my family did after my grandfather passed so . ye ANYWAY....

happy ending - seventeen, idk why but for some reason every time this song comes on shuffle i get goosebumps. that guitar in the beginning makes meeeee OOOOOO girl. and then the way the chorus is sung and just the whole vibe of the song. i love u svt (YEAH...STAND BY...ONE TWO...AND ACTION)

all too well - taylor swift, FIRST OF ALL this is the best taylor swift song of all time and nobody can tell me any different. anyway the lyrics to this song evoke an emotion in me i didn’t know was possible....it has me missing a partner i’ve never had and it also has me so mad at anyone who’s ever done me wrong...idk i just think this song is pure lyrical genius

2002 - anne marie, i just think this is a really fun song and a lot of ppl my age and a older will appreciate all of the references! i actually have recommended this to a few people (most told me that they had already heard it and loved it but i was LATE)!!!!

classic - mkto, BITCH i still listen to this song all the time like i did when it first came out 6 years ago. it gets me pumped for some reason and i think at this point it reminds me of my best high school friends and how much we listened to it and it just makes me happy

NONE bc my music taste is impeccable...jk the first one that comes to mind is oldie - odd future, and just because it’s like 10 mins long and it’s a lot to memorize. people seem to know frank’s verse but not much else. missing the good ole OF days

my dad is making me furious on a regular basis. im currently blasting “the plagues” song from prince of egypt and letting myself stew in my anger for a bit. im so fucking done with living in the same house as my parents.

if i wasn’t related to my parents i would hate them. theyre such backwards people who hate immigrants and muslims and lgbt ppl and black ppl. they support trump. they dont watch the news at all and when i tell them whats happening in the news they dont believe me. (”flint? dapl? it must be obama’s fault.”) they think im going to hell because im converting to judaism. they believe islam is inherently an oppressive religion (im like... 1. ur wrong, and 2. have you looked at your fundamentalist baptist church that hates gay ppl and doesnt allow women to speak in church??? cause like actually fuck you). they are die hard right wing republicans and i disagree with them on nearly every issue. they make it difficult for me to practice my faith because they keep cooking pork and shellfish as the only thing for dinner and i end up eating a shit ton of boxed rice and canned soup because theres never anything else to eat in my hell hole of a house. when i grocery shop for myself they eat it before i can. they honest to god believe that christians in america are being oppressed. they think its unfair that pork is taken off the menu in school lunches in the area due to a large muslim and jewish population (”they should bring their own lunch. its not fair to christian kids that they can’t have pork.”) as if pulling one food off the menu is equal to kids literally going hungry. theyre furious theres no prayer in public schools anymore even though ive explained its not fair to a large percentage of students who arent christians (”its a christian country. they should just accept it.”) and like tbh why cant christian kids just pray to themselves in school??? no ones stopping christian kids from personally giving thanks for their food etc etc. they do not understand the concept of separation of church and state at all. my mom believes evolution is a hoax and that the earth is only 6000 years old. my mom doesnt believe in science. recently my mom bought into the falsehood that vaccines cause autism (i was vaccinated as a baby thank god). my mom didnt let me get a vaccine when i was 16 that was proven to help prevent ovarian cancer (which runs in our family) solely because the virus it was fighting was transmitted sexually and she didnt want me having sex. my dad is very mad that tv shows and movies are getting more diverse because he cannot fucking comprehend the importance of representation. i told my dad i had brisket at a friends house and he laughed and said something antisemitic while referencing howard walowitz from big bang theory. my dad acts like a typical baby boomer, which is to say like a fucking self entitled two year old when i try to reason with him. i try to talk about things in the news (re: pussy grabbing trump video) with my mom and she just says “that can’t be true” but she never even googles it. im so fucking mad. its like how am i related to my parents in any way shape or form???

as soon as i get my masters and a full time job im gonna abandon ship so fast they’ll have whiplash. i just want to have a life where i dont have to hear this flaming pile of bullshit all the time. sometimes i feel so bitter i want to make their lives exceedingly uncomfortable. i hope that i fall in love with a brown immigrant woman and get married under a chuppah and never invite them to spend the holidays with my soft interracial jewish sapphic family. like. fuck them.
