THERE'S A MAGIC ORPHANAGE IN YOUR TOH AU? *grabs you by the neck* tell me more (I wonder how they got in the human realm/I wonder if they have to deal with the human government trying to experiment on them)
Rest your fangs, ghoul. *removes hands from neck* There’s no need for violence.
Yes, there is a magic orphanage in my au, but unless it’s in Hunter’s flashbacks, or during the time when Hunter was still there in the human realm, it’s not center focus of the AU.
However, since you showed interest, I will explain a little of it. As well as the background of magic users on Earth.
So, we know that the Wittebane brothers didn’t come through a portal, and the acknowledgement that things have traveled from the Boiling Isles TO the human realm allows me to believe that the opposite is possible. And it is PROVEN. In the very first episode Eda states that vampires and griffins, and giraffes, came FROM the Boiling Isles. So if humans are able to fall through to the demon realm, whose to say that witches haven’t fallen through to the human realm?
Yes, I believe that some witches over the centuries, just like how creatures and humans have come into the demon realm, have passed over into the human realm. And with some not knowing that they would need to blend in, ended up using magic in public and thus created the legends of witches and magic users that exist on Earth. I imagine that with the open mindedness that seems prevalent in the demon realm, most witches would not be opposed to marrying humans. Especially with the humans who came from cultures that believed in magic and were not against it.
This is what lead to many of the magical family lines that exist in the human realm. However, they are not the source of ALL magical families.
We know from the show that the glyphs will not work in the human realm, but the reason given is that there is ‘no magic’ in the human realm. I don’t like that explanation, so I will ignore it. We know magic can exist in the human realm, we can see that with Vee being able to live there with no problems. Also magically imbued items like the Hexes Hold’em cards can exist without the magic depleting or anything like that. I like to believe that the reason the glyphs don’t work in the human realm is because they rely on a connection with the Titan itself. The glyphs themselves were all over the Titan’s corpse-turned-island, a ‘gift from the isles’ as Luz would put it.
And yet witches could still use magic even if they went into the human realm, even with palismans. Eda traveled to and from the human realm for years with no visible side effects, the show would have shown us something like that by now. This shows that magic can EXIST in the human realm, you just can’t use the glyphs specific to the Titan.
This gives me the belief that there is magic in the human realm that is different in source from the magic of the Boiling Isles. Magic like that from Wiccans, Voodoo users, Satanists (and I will say this now Satanists are NOT the same thing as Wiccans) and general witchcraft of no religious following. Different kinds of magic; incantations, divination, sorcery, spells, and all that lot. I believe that these kinds of magic exist in the human realm, Luz just thought that none existed period because her glyphs didn’t work. (Again, these glyphs only appeared on the Titan’s body within the environment. They are unique to the demon realm only. Which makes sense that if they lost their connection, i.e. travel to another world entirely, they would stop working.)
It is users of these kinds of magic that run the orphanage that Hunter grew up in. They only take in children who come from magical backgrounds. That way when someone wants to adopt them, they will be given to another magical family who will know how to handle magic children.
I stated before the only reason they took in Hunter was because they could sense the magic in his soul, his magic core so to speak. For witches of the Boiling Isles, these ‘magic cores’ would be their bile sacs. But Hunter does not have a bile sac, but he has just enough of a magical bloodline to have a magic core. However, it was so weak, that the caretakers did not think Hunter would ever be able to use magic. In Harry Potter terms, Hunter would have been considered a squib. However, UNLIKE in Harry Potter, the adults here do not see Hunter as less than themselves just because he is magically weaker.
This is because there have been powerful magic users in the past, who were considered weak when they were young. A person’s magical strength cannot be properly measured until the child starts puberty. A child’s magic core will always be growing until they hit eighteen, but most core growth rates are similar in childhood that no distinction can be made until the child starts puberty. For girls it would be when they got their first period, boys it would be when their voice starts to break.
This does not mean that children cannot perform spells before they hit puberty, however. Children are taught a variety of spells to both get them used to their magic flow as well as to help encourage constant growth in their cores.
So, given that Hunter’s magic core was fundamentally different then the other children, it was of the belief of the adults that he wouldn’t be able to use even basic spells. That Hunter would only ever be able to use it through specially imbued items for magicless children of magical families. However, Hunter’s magic core just meant that he couldn’t use magic like everyone else. Like how Luz could use magic, but only through glyphs since she didn’t have a bile sac.
The adult’s belief though was quickly extinguished when Hunter got a familiar, a creature that only someone who can use magic can have. Someone with a weak core would never be able to create a familiar contract.
An easy way to put it is that Hunter’s core processes magic differently then other witches and magic users. This means that while he can use the same magic as them, he needs a different method. I am currently working on that ‘different method’ that isn’t basically a Wiccan version of Luz’s glyphs. Because that would be boring.
Another thing I should mentions is that most of the magic users on Earth, that aren’t demon realm descendants, rely on their magic cores to power their spells. Or in the case if they’re doing some sort of ritualistic spell, they use the magic in the environment to give the extra boost. This means that even in the demon realm, Hunter would still be able to use his magic because the demon realm is overflowing with magic.
I know I didn’t talk all that much about the orphanage, but I hope I explained enough? Again, it’s not all that relevant to the AU other than being where Hunter grew up.

My friend posted about how he regrets every day not going to the burial of our friend who died by suicide and. It. I also didn’t go and. Made me feel like if I was wrong to do so. Idk I just. I was falling apart and didn’t want to fall apart in front of his family as they were going through so much and I did not know his family well at all and I wonder if that truly was the best move or if I was just centering myself. Idk.
