A/N: Hey Resident evil fans 😀 im sorry I’m gonna make another part to this btw

Genre: Angst

Warnings: Death, Blood and funeral

Summary: Chris and his wife went on a mission a few months after Piers’ death but his was shot and killed by the enemy trying to protect Chris and the team

*bonus* Funeral (it does get kinda triggering so if you get triggered by funeral talk, skip that)

Chris, His wife and new men from the BSAA were on a mission again but this time in America, everything was going smoothly

All they had to do was take out the enemy, get the three hostages to safety and deactivate the bomb placed in the building they were in

“Boys listen” Y/N said, for someone who was 5’0, 147lb and currently the youngest on that team at 28 she was very intimidating to the men on that team, even Chris was intimidated by her — She’s his wife!

She was also the new captain of the team since Chris decided it wasn’t for him anymore — So he chose his replacement to be his wife

Not just because they were married. She had talent, she was tough and was hard on everyone and anyone when she had to be

“We will split into teams of three, one team is in charge of getting the hostages; the other are in charge of deactivating the bomb and my team will take care of the enemies. Corey, John and Andrew, you’re in charge of finding the bomb and deactivating it”

“Yes ma’am!” The three men said in unison before leaving to find out the bomb

“Phil, Jean and Mark, you’re In charge of finding and taking the hostages to safety”

“Ma’am!” The three said before doing their job

“Chris and Eric you’re with me” Y/N said as she turned to walk out the door, Chris watched her and was amazed by how amazing she was doing

“Is she always like this, Chris?”

“Only when she has to be” he smirked as he followed behind his wife and he was thinking about a lot of different things at once, his time as captain, his former men, Piers

He hadn’t realised he was already at the door of the room the enemies were in until he was tapped on the shoulder by a smaller hand

“You okay?” Y/N asked as she looked at Chris, an obvious worried expression on her face since he was zoning out

“What? Oh yeah. I’m fine... Sorry” Chris said as he looked at the door and let a sigh escape his lips as he backed up and kicked open the door, gun fire already heading towards them

Luckily the three hid in time before firing back, for about what felt like forever the three came from wherever they were hiding from and let out a sigh thinking they had got everyone

“Good job b— Chris!” Y/N called out as she had saw one remaining enemy stand up from behind a counter pointing a gun towards Chris

Out of instinct she ran towards Chris and pushing him out the way not even thinking about herself and that was the moment she was hit in the sternum, shockingly they had a powerful gun that can puncture anything

“Gah!”

Everything was still processing in Chris’ head right now, trying to catch his kind up, Eric used his last bullet to shoot the last enemy before running over to catch Y/N

“Captain!”

*flash back*

“I don’t want you joining the BSAA, Y/N! You’ll die!”

“I’m perfectly okay with that... If I die I know that I at least tried to help the world somehow. I hate sitting at home all day and doing nothing while I worry while you’re on your missions”

Chris knew exactly where she was coming from she she said that, he wanted to protect the world too but it was one thing if he was the one to die doing it, but his wife? He’d hate to see her die or get injured on the job

“Plus... ever since my parents died in Raccoon city I promised them I’d do something to help the world and stop all of this from happening again when I got older. Well I’m older”

Honestly, when she brought up her parents he couldn’t argue with her anymore... He knows what it’s like to lose both parents

“I get it... I’m not going to stop you.. I hate thinking about you getting hurt but your parents would want that for you..”

Chris ran to his wife and he felt his eyes water, the tears flooding his eyes as he stared at her

“No... Please stay with me! Don’t leave me goddamnit!” Chris refused to believe she was dying, he didn’t want to believe it

“Chris... Please” She reached inside of her pocket to grab her wedding ring, she never wore it on missions so she didn’t lose it, grabbing his hand she placed the ring inside

“I’m gonna see my parents again, Chris... Isn’t that good?”

“No no no no, Y/N please!! Don’t you die on me!”

“I love you, Chris...” His heart went numb the moment he felt her hand go heavy and almost fell out his but he held onto it

“Please don’t go! This isn’t funny anymore, fucking please don’t leave me alone!!” He knew she was dead... He knew he just didn’t wanna believe it, he wanted to believe she was pulling a fucked up prank on him and got up like nothing happened, he wanted her to sit up and say ‘sike motherfucker’. He wanted that more than anything right now

When she didn’t do that he hugged her body, not caring about the blood getting all over them and he just cried as he held her, he felt responsible for her death, if only he was paying attention he wouldn’t have lost the love of his life...

The day of the funeral, Chris looked horrible. He couldn’t sleep since that day and the house was a mess, Claire stayed with him to make sure he didn’t start drinking again to get rid of the pain

“Chris? You getting ready?” Claire asked as she was already dressed, opening the door to what used to be shared by two people

He sat on the bed looking at a picture of his wife on his phone, he had put her ring on a necklace he always wore

“Yeah... I’m ready” he said as he stood up to walk out with his sister, his hair was slicked back and he had a nice black suit on, Claire had on a black dress

After about a 30 minute drive they arrived and Chris didn’t wanna leave the car but Claire dragged him out

First his partner now his wife... He regrets even letting her join the BSAA and if he could change the roles and take the bullet for her, he would in a fucking heart beat

After about two hours, the ceremony happened, everyone close to her gave their speeches and the viewing it they lowered the casket and everyone had went inside to eat and talk

“Hey Chris, how are you holding up” Leon said as he went to sit with him and Claire

“I’ll be fine...” was all Chris said as he picked at his food, he was so depressed he barely ate anymore, basically all he did was sleep, workout and do paperwork.

He couldn’t bare handling a gun since in all honesty... he didn’t trust himself around one anymore

“Look... Chris I know you feel like shit and don’t wanna do anything anymore but, she wouldn’t want you picking at your food and not eating.. She’d want you to continue being yourself. She wouldn’t want this.” Leon commented

“....I know... But, I just miss her ya’know... she was my everything and I just feel so empty without her now. We were gonna start a family. I only wanted a family with her and only her”

Leon and Claire didn’t have any words since they didn’t want to say the wrong thing around Chris, the three ate and after eating they headed home

The car ride was silent — The silence was deafening you can hear a pin drop

Leon was right, Y/N wouldn’t wanna see him like this. He didn’t want to disappoint her so the first thing he did when he got home was cleaned up the way she liked it and how she liked cleaning

It was difficult but it was the process to healing...

Rowan stuck to his guns and moved out. It didn't take the two of them long to figure out that a baby didn’t actually change anything or magically fix the gaping divide between them. All it did was make it all more complicated. He didn’t know where he stood in those early weeks, wasn’t sure if he should be checking in as much as he did, but he still cared for Aelin and wanted to make sure she was doing okay. Another thing he insisted on was that he go to all the appointments, something Aelin didn’t fight him about. She told him that this was half his baby after all.

Today was their first ultrasound scan, the first time either of them would see the baby. After this they would tell everyone about the baby. So far the only people who knew were Lorcan and Elide, the people they had vented to these first three months. They were the only two of their friends that they could count on not to get overly emotionally involved in the whole fiasco.

The silence was painfully awkward as they waited together, an empty seat between them.

“How’s the morning sickness?” Rowan asked.

Aelin shrugged. “Hasn’t been too bad. I can eat a fair bit now.”

“That’s good,” Rowan said.

“Mm-hmm, great,” Aelin murmured.

That was all their conversation was until the ultrasound technician called them in. Rowan followed Aelin in and sat in the corner as the technician talked to her. He barely heard a thing and just waited for the image to come on the screen. When it did and the technician pointed out the little human form something in Rowan’s chest ached at the sight of it. A quick look at Aelin showed her wiping away tears.

Before he knew it the appointment was over and they were walking towards the front entrance of the hospital.

“So, I’ll let you know when I’ve booked my next appointment with the doctor,” Aelin said.

“Sounds good,” Rowan said, sliding his hands into his pockets. “Hey, I’ve got some time before my lunch break ends. Want to grab something from the cafeteria?”

Aelin sighed. “I haven’t thrown up today, and I really don’t plan to lose my stomach on that questionable food.”

“That’s fair,” Rowan said.

“Bye then,” Aelin said and didn’t wait for her answer before she walked away. Rowan just watched her go.

By the next appointment Aelin had announced the pregnancy to just about everyone and hesitant congratulations had come in from their friends and family. No one knew what to do besides be happy that there was a baby coming into the world. This appointment was just a doctor’s appointment, and everything looked like it was going fine. Rowan walked Aelin to her car, even went as far to open her door for her. She rolled her eyes but she didn’t seem pissed.

“Your announcement was cute,” Rowan said referring to the photo she had taken with the ultrasound picture with a bib and dummy placed around it for decoration.

“Thanks,” Aelin said, ducking into the car. “I was aiming for cute.”

“Will you let me know if there is anything I can do, for like the nursery or whatever,” Rowan offered.

“I think it's a bit early for that,” Aelin said.

Rowan nodded and shut her door.

As time went on their after appointment chats got more civil, Aelin smiled more and started joking with him. Today they were finding the gender of the baby and Aelin was practically thrumming with excitement.

“Boy or girl?” She asked him.

“Are you asking me my preference?” Rowan said.

Aelin shook her head. “No, which one do you think it is?”

“Oh, um…” Rowan thought for a second. “I think girl.”

“Really? Me too,” Aelin said, her knee bouncing. “Aedion thinks a boy. He’s so confident in it that I’m hoping we’re right so I can see his face when I tell him he’s wrong.”

Rowan chuckled at that and Aelin grinned. The technician called them in and Rowan stood and offered Aelin his hand to help her up. She looked at it for a moment before she took it, he may have led on a little longer than necessary — his thumb brushing over her knuckles.

Again Rowan sat in the corner waiting. This time it felt like an eternity for the image to come on the screen, but then there it was. Their baby. When the technician asked if they wanted to know the gender the words were barely out of their mouth before Aelin said yes.

Rowan waited on bated breath for the answer.

“It’s a girl.”

“I knew it!” Aelin said, looking at him with a beaming smile on her face.

Aelin didn’t stop smiling even as they left the examination room, almost skipping down the hallways, a hand on her growing bump. They stopped again at the main entrance of the hospital and they both lingered.

“Did you have time today, for lunch?” Aelin asked.

Rowan was beyond surprised at her question, and he didn’t know what to say for a moment. “Yeah, I do.”

Aelin had too much on her mind. First and foremost was the case she was trying to close, then there was the fact her heartburn felt as though it was ready to murder her. Thirdly there was whatever was going on between her and Rowan. It was a distraction she did not need right now. They were friendlier, most definitely. But in the long run that didn’t really mean anything if they couldn’t work things out. They were still a long way from fixing anything.

That was a conversation Aelin had vehemently avoided, claiming work and pregnancy made thinking about all that too stressful. She wasn’t wrong, but she could see the disappointment in Rowan’s eyes every time she brushed away the conversation. Since they had lunch after her 20 week ultrasound almost two months ago, they had been spending more time together, usually after her appointments. So things were better, but functional? Not really.

Aelin gathered what she needed for the courtroom, this would be her last hurrah before maternity leave and she was determined to win. She wasn’t going to let the fact that she had to send Elide out to get her a new blouse put a damper on things either. The one she had planned to wear had become too small and left gaping holes across her chest, so she had slipped a t-shirt over her skirt until she had a blouse that fit.

There was a knock on the door and Elide stuck her head in. “You ready?”

Aelin nodded and picked up her things. When she stood, the room seemed to spin a little, she stupidly had skipped lunch, so grabbed a handful of nuts to eat along the way. She could eat lunch after.

The trial passed in a blur and now it was time for closing arguments. Aelin kept going over what she needed to say. She had this in the bag, she knew this case inside out all she had to do was be her dynamic and confident self and she could win this. Throughout the trail she felt dizzy, but she kept it together, but it was shortness of breath that was harder to overlook. All she had to do was ignore the concerned looks Elide was sending her way and close the case and it was done.

This time when Aelin stood the room spun enough that she had to lean on the table in front of her to keep herself upright. She had to do this, her client was depending on her. Aelin started her speech, stepping out from behind the desk, but she didn’t get far before she needed it for support again.

“Aelin,” Elide whispered but Aelin just shook her head. She could do this.

Aelin walked away from the desk addressing the jury. But the edges of her vision were going dark and blurry and the pain in her chest was enough that a pained sound left her lips. Elide was beside her within moments, catching her as her legs gave out.

Panic set in as Aelin realised something was wrong, very wrong.

De atracos y ab*rtos - Of heists and ab*rtions or How women are being robbed.

⚠️ this contains major spoilers for LA CASA DE PAPEL / MONEY HEIST season 1, specifically episode 3!

Personally, I have experienced the series la casa de papel (original title) or money heist as progressive, realistic and not afraid to deal with certain topics like domestic violence which I will be commenting on in posts yet to be published, female trans representation and occasionally peppered with numerous feminist parentheses (see characters like Nairobi and dialogues around/involving her opinion).

However, there are certain aspects I did not enjoy to watch / do not support. That is normal and every show has its flaws, those resulting all the more dangerous however, as money heist is not just any show. The series is thanks to its popularity by now a relevant aspect of people’s opinion-forming and plays into the perception of many people all around the world, coming from different cultures and having experienced all kinds of upbringing. The target audience is not specified, yet crime drama (the genre) is estimated to target both females and males aged 15-40 years old. Means, also targeting minors and adolescents. Again, all cultures / religions / races / classes etc etc included.

I am fully aware that this kind of range was not expected and therefore not taken into account by producers, talking about the first two seasons that were solely meant for a Spanish audience, not an international one. (The series was initially intended as a limited series to be told in two parts. It had its original run of 15 episodes on Spanish network Antena 3 from 2 May 2017 through 23 November 2017. Netflix acquired global streaming rights in late 2017). The analysed / discussed scene is indeed part of this maybe not so carefully crafted content. Cough.

Let’s get right into it.

Characters interacting: Mónica Gaztambide (Esther Acebo), one of the hostages who was also Arturo Román's secretary and introduced as his mistress and “Denver” (Jaime Lorente), one of the robbers participating in the heist [Denver is an alias, all robbers being referred to with city names]

Context: Mónica has an affair with Arturo Román (Enrique Arce) -hostage and former Director of the Royal Mint of Spain- which leads to an unwanted pregnancy. Numerous factors influence her (for now) final decision: she doesn’t want the child. Shortly after, the robbery unfolds and she’s taken hostage among other people. She then requests an ab*rtion pill, which at some point arrives in the mint alongside other medical supplies. The scene analysed: one of the robbers (Denver) is supposed to hand her mentioned ab*rtion pill. Before that he holds an emotional speech on the subject, morally risen forefinger, accusations and tears included.

Here the dialogue without comments:

————Now my opinion / the actual post:

“You need money, right?” One might think that the amount of money seen in this frame (20.000,-€ approx. $21.701,50 according to Denver) is an exaggerated, way too generous gesture. Let me tell you, it is not.

According to a 2017 report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the average cost of raising a child from birth [to] age 17 is $233,610. If that made your heart skip a beat, take a deep breath before you read on. Incorporating inflation costs, it will be more like $284,570. Since that’s based on 2015 numbers, we can expect the cost will be even higher, babies born since then.

[…] This average includes everything from housing, food and transportation to healthcare, education and childcare to clothing, personal care items and entertainment.

Let me now remind you that Mónica is a secretary, so she likely earns (barely) enough money to be financially independent herself (taking into account that she lives near or maybe even in Madrid, her workplace, the Royal Mint situated there, so housing alone is hella expensive) and can’t really expect reliable support coming from the potential child’s father, Arturo Román, either, who initially denied support himself, their relationship a secret to the family and wife he already has. Phew.

Btw: A University of California at San Francisco study found that women who were turned away from ab*rtion clinics […] were three times more likely to be below the poverty level two years later than women who were able to obtain ab*rtions. 76% of the "turnaways" ended up on unemployment benefits, compared with 44% of the women who had ab*rtions.

“Enough to get the kid diapers until he graduates.” The problem or let’s say points raised above are now also being ridiculed or not taken seriously to say the least.

She takes the money, sticking to her decision however. “So, what’s the problem?” Or “Then, what is it?” A million additional things, Denver, believe it or not a potential child is a big deal. That and none of your business.

Also, see the reaction? How he stares at her in disbelief (and possibly even disgust, see the risen corner of his lips?). How he looks at her as if she were heartless, selfish, a monster – the picture often painted in this debate when it comes to women who decide to terminate a pregnancy. How he doesn’t respect her “no, thanks” and continues. Continues influencing her, later on even starts to mansplain his way into her stone cold heart. Okay, then let me continue as well.

“That he’ll f*ck up your life? […] Your son. Better to have your life f*cked up by your son than any of these sons of b*tches. Or me.” Call it ‘f*ck up’ or not – that is entirely her perception, her decision and I’d dare to say…she knows best.

First, because regardless of the fact that she is a woman and you are not – well it is indeed her life and, uhm, excuse me Denver, you’re no sibling, no friend, no acquaintance, quite the contrary, you have known her for what? Three minutes and already jump to conclusions?

Take the privilege of explaining her how a child would f*ck or not f*ck up her life?!!

Secondly, what makes him assume the gender of this cluster of cells, this potential future life, this basis for a potential life that may later on develop into a life (it is not a walking talking baby boy already, my friend!).

Personhood begins after a fetus becomes “viable” (able to survive outside the womb) or after birth, not at conception.

Does it provide a smooth transition for that awfully funny and figurative “son” – “sons of b*tches” (org. Hijo – hijos de p*ta) line or is it literal propaganda?

Why does he say “your son”, although he cannot possibly know? I’ll tell you. In order to distract the audience from the fact that he is referring to a pea-sized basis for a potential life by painting the picture of an already existing male human being. Mónica, do you really want to murder your son? Mónica, does that cute little doe eyed baby boy really f*ck up your life? Yeah, propaganda at its best.

Also, another example for ridiculing the point “a child would destroy my life” by comparing an unwanted pregnancy to a literal robbery at gun point. Great one.

“This f*cks your life up. A kid doesn’t.” Do you see that raised gun, that is quite literally an extension of a raised index finger? Wow, the drama. On a different note, did you notice the symbolism? A weapon stands for death, murder and guess what is also often equated with murder.

“How do you know what f*cks up my life? What do you know?” Finally. Exactly. He doesn’t know her, like at all. He doesn’t know her situation and no, he’s also not the pregnant one or anyone who would have to worry about that.

What do you answer to that, hmm? Let’s make this whole dispute even more emotional and dramatic. That ‘a cute little son isn’t as bad as a robbery’ didn’t convince her?

Let’s try with an extraordinary f*cked up and tragic life story, nobody asked for. Its goal? Showing the oblivious, naive, little secretary what real ‘f*ck up’ means, despite the evident lack of any sort of knowledge when it comes to her life (story). Again, conclusion-jumping and wallowing in prejudice at its best.

Have a look at his expression while ‘lecturing’ her. How disrespectful, how belittling. ‘Oh please, what do you know about life?’. On a wider scale: ‘How could we possibly trust women to rationally and with a clear conscience decide such things for themselves – concerning life and death, if they have not the slightest idea, living in their bubble of security and stability and no real problems’ etc. This is everything but taking women and their reasoning abilities, their judgement seriously.

“My mother was going to ab*rt me.” Now the audience doesn’t only have the mental image of a potential cute little son, it is furthermore provided with the image of a living, breathing human being standing right in front of them. Just look at him and his pleading puppy dog eyes. No actual child actor could have done it better.

Thank god she did not go through with the ab*rtion, right? Oh thank god she was not allowed to.

Taking advantage of this frame to remind you of the fact that we are still talking about a POTENTIAL future life, not an existing one that is nevertheless put above the mother’s already existing life in this impudent, low and unfair debate.

“But first…she inhaled the heroin she had to sell to be able to pay for the ab*rtion. Then she was caught by the police. Between jail, drugs and the police, I was born. What do you know?”

1)Adding even more emotions, subtle accusations and drama to that oh so rational dispute? Check. Making his situation seem two thousand times worse than hers (which he, again, has no clue about)? Check. Subconsciously painting the picture of reckless, irresponsible drug addicts/ “lowlifes” or generally female members of “society’s margins” usually being the ones to abort and make it seem like the state’s or whoever’s responsibility to prevent them from deciding for themselves? Check.

2) Then he even tears her valid ‘what do you know (about my life)’ out of the initial context of being confronted with endless assumptions and prejudice and blows it way out of proportion in order to demonstrate the insignificance of … everything concerning her? Her background, her life, her reasons. Everything.

And FINALLY *drum rolls* the wild theories and hypotheses and presumptions she was dying to hear because since he, I repeat for the twelfth time, has no actual clue about her life, let’s make up one.

“Because it seems that you don’t have a very exciting job. And maybe outside of work your life is not that great either. Or what is it that you do? ‘Kilates’? And Friday night drinks, right? What a f*cking drag. Another plan ruined by the kid[…]” That and the entire following paragraph. Wow. All accusations thrown at women who decide to abort in one.

Because OF COURSE a middle aged, down to earth, intelligent, responsible woman like Mónica Gaztambide has no other reason for terminating a pregnancy than not being able to drink alcoholic beverages or party anymore. Because OF COURSE it is valid to assume a woman or any person for that matter one has known for half an hour and interacted with for literal five minutes has a boring enough life that would not be affected in any way by a pregnancy, birth and ultimately being forced to raise an unwanted child. Because OF COURSE Denver would know how much a pregnancy can affect somebody, especially one that is forced upon a person. Quite frankly he has no idea and no right. The audacity.

“Do [your friends who are also mothers] seem f*cked up? / Do their lives look f*cked up? No, right?” Because you know best. Not only regarding her life but on top of that also that of her friends. Because those pregnancies or motherhood in general did under no circumstances end a career or prevent them from pursuing one in the first place or cause the end of a relationship or force them to stay in a toxic or even abusive relationship or change their financial situation completely or rob them of their fragile financial independence and/or free time altogether or cause any (mental) health complications or … you get the point. Oh, and because their situations are completely identical to Mónica’s situation, that is additionally not half as dramatic as your life story. Of course, Denver.

Seeing the ‘rational’ argument doesn’t really work, let’s add yet another dramatic, emotional rhetorical question. As a precaution.

“Do you know how much a child can love you?”

How could she, being the heartless, cruel, selfish, irresponsible, ridiculous and impulsive murderess you’re ‘exposing’ her as?

Would Cincinnati - that’s her sons actual name, not alias – really love her like he does now?

Friendly reminder: his biological father (Arturo Román) let her know - right from the start - that he wouldn’t take on any responsibility whatsoever, regardless of his later statements about doing so. Why those statements don’t matter? Despite his awareness of her state, despite knowing she was pregnant he shortly after urges her on to steal the cellphone she is caught with right after the analysed scene, ready to risk her life and the potential life of his unborn child. Literally, because as soon as she is caught with it, Berlín orders Denver to execute her.

So to those of you who will now say “but- but Cincinnati is okay and has an amazing life and does love her” etc etc, first think certain things through. If Denver wouldn’t have spared her, if she didn’t just happen to get together with him and if the heist didn’t just happen to work out like that, what then?

Cincinnati would have a different name. What else? Well for one, he wouldn’t have a father (that is now Denver) like at all, resulting in possible daddy issues / issues in general. How I know Arturo, the biological father, wouldn’t be there for them, wouldn’t fulfill all his empty promises?

Did he canonically care about his son? Was he devastated that he was not given the possibility to see him or did he instead focus on that random book of his and his speeches about heroism and honour and so on? If he wouldn’t have called his wife by his mistress’s name and through that expose himself, if his family wouldn’t have left him all alone, don’t you think he would stick to them? Just to paint a picture of who the father is and how he behaves and what we can assume from that behaviour. So the probability was high she would’ve been left alone with I quote “all the love” and of course all the responsibility. It’s a thing, Denver.

Secondly, if she didn’t just happen to turn into a millionaire thanks to the heist working out, would she really be able to provide a life for Cincinnati? Would she really be able to remain financially independent? Would her life at her son’s side really be all peace and harmony if she wouldn’t just so happen to be able to live from heist money?

So many coincidences, so many risks and no security. Can we really blame her? Do we have the right?

You Wanted It the WHOLE Time!

So I’ve seen a lot of theories floating around about Virgil and Deceit (+ making a mini one of my own) but something that I wanted to look back on was the video after watching the whole thing through.

Because at the end Deceit says two things,

“Like I said, “Everything has a purpose.” And you’re denying yours.”

“STOP STALLING AND ADMIT IT! What AM I doing here right now Thomas? Am I the snake come to trick you into sinning? Or have you had your mind made up since the MOMENT you received the news about the callback?”

And looking back over the video you can tell that Thomas (and Roman) had their minds made up from the very get go. Of course there’s the whole “Deceit needs to step up his game” and all that stuff but where this whole thing starts for me is when Deceit says the call should be higher than a social engagement.

And then the camera shows Roman

Who looks like he’s doubting himself and what seems to be “right” (well what morality says is right. I’ll get to the decision later on)

And then Deceit asks Thomas point blank, “Do you want the part in the movie or not?”

This gets a surprised look out of both Roman and Thomas

Because if there’s anything that we’ve seen with the series is that there’s quite a bit of beating around the bush when it comes to the problem at hand. And Thomas has never been in a situation where the question has been asked in his face.

Because of this he looks over at Roman, unsure of what to say.

To which Deceit asks again,

“Do you want the part or not?”

Because the question he’s asking is actually not that hard. It’s a yes or no question, simple as that.

Thomas still looks unsure but Roman immediately answers on Thomas’s behalf saying “of course he does.” Because Roman knows that Thomas does and Deceit knows it as well.

To which Patton seems surprised that Roman would say something like that because we all know how much Thomas cares for his friends and yea has put their needs above his own. (I mean that was like episode 4 of the series or something?) And he says that Thomas has already made a commitment and that Thomas wouldn’t even THINK about not going.

To which, Thomas gives Patton this look,

Which should be just confirmation to Deceit at this point of not wanting to go. Thomas wants SO BAD to believe that Patton is right and he wants to support his friends. But he knows that that’s NOT true. And Deceit knows that that’s not true.

Because after Patton makes a big speech about how wrong it would be to miss it Thomas’s “yea…” is about as confident as me taking a Spanish test. Because Deceit smirks right after that.

He knows he’s right from the get go. And it’s only a matter of getting the other sides (and Thomas) to realize this face on. (is that how that should be worded? Whatever, just roll with it) And then there’s the whole “I don’t know anything about words” yadda yadda.

And then Romans counter argument of things… “coming up” and if I were to be honest, I’m sure that Thomas’s friends would be totally understanding of a once in a lifetime opportunity that will most likely never happen again.

To which Virgil asks if he REALLY is siding with Deceit on the argument. And Roman asks is Virgil is so “closed minded” that he can’t reason with someone just because he doesn’t like them? And while I do have an entire thought on the matter, I think that Virgil is just trying to get Deceit to leave and the fact that Roman is agreeing with him is just agitating for Virgil.

Moving on, Thomas starts voicing his “I’d rather go to the callback” but it’s more of a question because he’s unsure of how the others will take it. And Patton is immediately freaking out because Thomas is thinking about it and he says that “he wouldn’t be here if Thomas actually meant what he is saying.”

Well… that is true to an extent but I think that we should keep in mind here that morality is here because of the conflicting dates and really nothing more than that. Because Thomas starts his “of course you’re right you’re my heart and I know this is wrong” spiel. But Deceit realizes that he is also here and that has to mean SOMETHING because if Thomas really HAD made up his mind than the video would have been over in 5 minutes with little to no conflict.

And Deceit now realizes that he has to PROVE his point to the others so he sends them to the mind palace in a legal setting because… why not this is Thomas’s mind after all.

Thomas… kinda being slow on the uptake is confused as to what’s going on so Patton explains that “Deceit’s trying to prove that Thomas cares more about himself than others.” And once AGAIN Thomas looks unsure of himself. Wondering if he should be siding with Patton in all this.

Alright I’m gonna skip ahead a bit because there’s mostly tom foolery until this next part.

Patton says with the absolute confidence that Thomas is “Not Guilty” and Thomas is very hesitant about this. And Deceit says that Thomas has the confidence of someone who has been caught with their hand in the cookie jar, in a cookie factory, his pants on the ground, and they’re on fire. (btw can someone please draw that I’d LOVE to see it!)

And skipping again,

“I am rubber, you are glue. Whatever you say bounces off to me and sticks to you. That is all.”

Actually that has nothing to do with anything I just thought that was REALLY funny!

So Deceit’s first witness is Logan because it’s never a full SS video without him. And something I find interesting here is that Deceit thinks that Logan will be on his side no questions asked because he knows Logan’s feelings towards Thomas and his friends. And when Logan says that Thomas has more to lose missing the wedding Deceit is surprised. But after asking what Logan alone thinks, it’s the callback that’s more important.

Now after Patton’s rather… pathetic bribery to Logan Virgil tries to step in for Patton saying the court thing is rigged to which Deceit replies, “It takes a liar, to know a liar.” While looking from Virgil to Thomas. And Virgil just looks at Deceit with more confusion than anything else. Basically he’s calling the both of them liars but right now I’m focusing on the Thomas thing.

And you can see Virgil getting more irritated with Deceit not letting Patton go because I really think that Virgil didn’t think that Patton could pull this off from the get go. And as it’s seen that Patton CLEARLY isn’t going to win this, his anxiety goes up and hides in his hoodie.

Ok skipping again,

Deceit gets to Roman and we already know how Roman feels about this thing. And you can tell he’s trying his best to defend Patton, Thomas, Mary-lee, and Lee. Buuuuttt things aren’t really working out that way. And Deceit actually makes the good argument of “putting others wants over our own.” (Which again Thomas and Patton went over but I digress)

Ssssssssssssssuck up!

And now we have Patton questioning Deceit. The uhh “big guns” of this whole court room scenario if you will. And Thomas looks upon Patton with concern/worry,

And I just think this is because Patton doesn’t have any questions that Deceit won’t have an acceptable answer for but all those answers will put Patton’s argument down the toilet. And then we get through the whole “Society is a lie” philosoohy lesson with Deceit. And the Max Stirner thing which ohhh….

Now Deceit starts questioning Thomas and is point blank calling him out again “you don’t want to go to the wedding at all do you?”

And Thomas starts grasping at straws trying to sound like a good friend but he’s lost this battle at this point. Which Deceit shoots back with “Roman wants me to win” which in it of itself could sound like Deceit grasping at straws but from Romans reaction and Deceit’s quote, “Like I said, “Everything has a purpose.” And you’re denying yours.” He knows that this is what Roman wants for Thomas and he’s been battling Patton and Virgil this entire episode.

And then he gets to the end of his rope, “STOP STALLING AND ADMIT IT! What AM I doing here right now Thomas? Am I the snake come to trick you into sinning? Or have you had your mind made up since the MOMENT you received the news about the callback? You didn’t even forget about the wedding did you? It was all an act-’’

And here is where Thomas snaps, finally being called out on his true desires. “FINE I WANNA GO TO THE CALLBACK!”

And Patton is of course surprised by this outburst by Thomas. Not thinking that Thomas would be “selfish” and put his needs above his friends,

And they all know that Thomas is guilty and Roman sentences him to the wedding which was the WRONG move. Thanks Roman. And his argument is “he wouldn’t dream of attaining his dreams through deceitful means” (I’m about to get into a tangent about this if I don’t stop myself so I’ll just move on.)

And Deceit believes that Thomas is still missing the point of what Deceit is trying to say. And he’s going about several different methods of trying to get the message across in a way that the others will understand. But he can never really get what he wants to say out because the others are like “get out”.

So with that, Deceit leaves Thomas with one final message. “I’ll always be a part of you.”

14x02 - Episode Review - Without the Bells and Whistles

Bucklemming colour me impressed. This episode was a rich character driven story that left me full and satisfied and that is something I NEVER say about Bucklemming. I am amazed at how character focused these first two episodes are and truly hope that Dabb keeps up the momentum among writers. It is a change of pace with the show, and a change of focus, but it is WORKING so far.

As always with BL episodes there were some pacing issues and clunky dialogue in parts, but damn Dick Speight Jr is doing a fabulous job making the show look beautiful. As with 14x01 there is a lot to discuss, though I will try to be brief as I have a desperate need to write a separate post about Cas because my angel had me in tears in this episode and he needs an essay written about him in it.

Without further adieu, a long review is under the cut.

Michael and the Bait

Firstly Jensen did spectacularly in this episode. Such a drastic difference from 14x01 and I’m not sure if that’s because of Dick being a more hands on director or Jensen finally making a choice but he has settled into the role and plays Michael as a sinister psychopath on a mission. Michael has far more personality in this episode. He is more interesting to watch and managed to hold my attention unlike in 14x01. This makes me happy.

So what’s the deal guys? Michael spends this episode focusing on his monster experiments, brags about owning Dean, and then just leaves? Obviously that’s not what happened. The clue is in the key moments:

“Why be the hunted, when you can be the Hunter?”

“Rule no.1 you can’t have a trap without bait. Rule no.2 Once the trap has been sprung, you don’t need the bait anymore.”

Michael’s plan has been set in motion. The scene with the vamp girl being foreshadowing for the bigger picture, the bigger goal. Is Michael going after the hunters? If his plan is to make a world where Monsters are in charge, then the hunters need to be eradicated. It makes sense. It also therefore makes sense that you would set your sights on hunter central – the bunker. So Dean was let free so Michael could keep a watch on the bunker and it’s residents through him. As far as the rules go, if Dean is the bait, then releasing Dean is Michael not needing him anymore directly. The trap itself is the mystery, but I suspect we will find out more about exactly what Michael has done in 14x03, and it will most likely all have to do with this mysterious scar. I don’t think Michael is hiding “in” Dean so much as has an “open connection” to him where he could jump back in at any time without Dean’s consent. But we shall find out soon enough I’m sure.

Mary x Bobby

Obviously I support this ship, but I support it even more seeing as they have now paralleled Mobby to Destiel in two episodes in a row.

“My FBI is a little rusty”

This week, Bobby is our Cas mirror and Mary is our Dean. The fond pat on the back was the only hint we got that this was romantic, but like with 14x01, I ask you to try to find a single viewer who doesn’t see “something there” between this generic heterosexual couple? They are continuing to show their relationship through nothing BUT destiel parallels and it continues to delight me that this is now the shows go-to way to portray romance.

On a slight side note, Bobby being from an apocalypse AU world, he is the classic hunter right now who only sees in black and white, and the way he went for the vamp girl even after she tried to explain how she had never harmed a human. Bobby’s take on things this season will be an interesting one as it’s a continuous theme in this show to explore what makes a monster, something that dates back to John Winchester days (the ultimate black and white hunter). Also his understandable suspicions about angels making the dynamic with Cas a potentially interesting one. I wonder if this Bobby will ever utter the phrase “family don’t end with blood”?

Nick – It’s a chicken and egg situation

*sigh* I’m still not won over, and I probably won’t be. I expected this episode to be Nick heavy, and the flashbacks irked me because I simply don’t care. But I get that they would be necessary for a general audience. My lack of care is my own issue. It doesn’t matter how much Mark P acted his arse off trying to give us a decent performance (his first in years), I’m still not gonna be a fan. I’m still gonna skip those scenes in subsequent re-watches but that’s just me. I just don’t find it interesting even if he is being embedded into the story in a way that is paramount to the plot and the characters own struggles and development. I will acknowledge that importance and move on. I suppose the take away from Nick’s role in this episode when not specifically tied to Castiel (which I will yell about later) is whether or not he murdered his wife and child before he was possessed by Lucifer. The set up in the episode, the scripting and the direction implies that yes, he did. Though that could be a misdirection.

At the beginning of the episode, when he was asking Castiel what would possibly make him say yes to Lucifer to begin with, he had seemingly forgotten all about the brutal murder of his family, until Cas reminded him. Perhaps he had just repressed the trauma to the point that he had removed it from his mind to save himself further torment – but then murderers do that as much as grieving widows. Interestingly of all the things we learn about the murder case, we never actually learn Nick’s whereabouts, only from Castiel saying “you weren’t there” which is entirely unreliable because how would he have known other than from reading about the case himself? We know Nick’s neighbour is jumpy around him, so what did the neighbour actually see? We know his wife and child were killed with a hammer – an extremely intimate murder weapon and one that has been meta’d before in relation to Demon!Dean. Strangers don’t murder people with a hammer. It’s the weapon of crimes of passion, of extreme emotional connection to the victims. There is nothing cold and detached about a hammer. People who pick hammer’s to kill seek out the mess and extreme violence that they cause. It’s horrific and so much more gruesome than a knife or a gun. To kill an infant with a hammer? Even worse. To then see Nick murder the neighbour in the same violent attack, it is very easy to assume that he was the original killer as well.

If we assume Nick was the killer what does this mean for the canon of the show? Is this how Lucifer picks his vessels? What does this say about Sam? Who had to consume gallons of demon blood before he could contain Lucifer, Sam who had to be “corrupted” from a young age to prepare him? Was Nick already corrupted enough thanks to his apparent violent streak?

OR was this new kill with the hammer a result of what Cas called Lucifer’s “influence”, the “damage on his psyche”? Did Lucifer create the monster? Or was the monster already a part of Nick? If the season is going to continue the themes of previous seasons in exploring the shades of grey between men and monsters, then Nick is a key component. Is he the innocent victim of the devil? Or is he a tormented killer, who just so happened to get what he deserved? How would this affect the boys? If they are already struggling to find compassion towards a man wearing the face of their abuser, how does this potential new bit of information fit into that story? Perhaps, if Nick really is the killer, once this is found out it gives the writers an easy way to ultimately have him killed off without any guilt of tormenting and villainising an innocent. My money is actually on this theory. Plus it gives me a reason to continue hating him for the hell of it. But hey, that’s just me.

Castiel – The Angel with Too Much Heart

Oh Cas. What DON’T I have to say about you in this episode? I was amazed by Bucklemming’s dedication to Cas as a character and devotion to getting him right for once… I feel like I have slipped into an alternate universe because of this.

In 14x01 Cas was physically beaten, and in 14x02 he is emotionally beaten. I can’t help but wonder if this spells gloomy foreshadowing for Cas in the coming episodes. I want to write about this in depth as this episode is a fascinating insight into Cas’s psyche and his character arc going forward BUT I am leaving that for a separate post so in this review I will just sum it up:

Consider what happens to Cas in several points:

He overhears Bobby saying “angels ain’t known for their veracity” about Jo – that he doubts she was telling the truth. Cas shrugs it off and “tends to agree with him” but the awkwardness is obvious. This isn’t the Bobby who saw Cas as a son after all.

He is told he cannot go along on the mission to save Dean because his “angelic presence would be sensed by Michael” therefore his grace has rendered him useless.

He is made to relive his own possession by Lucifer “you were in a lot of pain, and Lucifer saw a vulnerability and he exploited it” though not talking about himself, the implication is obvious to anyone with a good memory of previous seasons.

He is made to relive another dark chapter of his history when his grace was stolen and he was human. Cas gives Jack a heartfelt positive speech that does show he is in a better place now “I had Sam and Dean, but I had something else that was extremely helpful. I had myself. Just the basic me, as Dean would say without all the bells and whistles” (which btw is so so good for human!cas meta) but the truth is actually far more depressing than Cas lets on, and the pain of what happened at that time, how Dean kicking him out of the bunker only encouraged the view that without his grace he was useless and unwanted by Dean – hence jilted lover.

He is surprised by Nick trying to “snap” him to oblivion which could easily be a trigger for Cas bearing in mind Lucifer has blown him up before via that very gesture.

He had to relive his “greatest regret” and what he did to Jimmy and his family. “You’re just a stone cold body snatcher, you’re no different from Lucifer” and you can SEE how much that pained him. How much Nick twisted the knife at those words.

He was told by Jack that he wanted to meet “The only real family that I have left” which is a slap in the face to poor Cas who sees Jack as part of his own family (and his reaction to that line is heart breaking).

Then the worst thing, he is made to face the possible conclusion that Dean may have to die to save the world. “Dean doesn’t matter” oh boy. No hate to Jack who doesn’t really have any real reason to put Dean ahead of the world, but to Cas, who is in love with him? Yeah that’s the killing blow right there.

Right at the end Jack says “Do you think he’d want it any other way?” and Cas KNOWS Dean wouldn’t, because they have been in that situation before as well, and when that happened Dean asked Cas to take him out. So he had to relive that painful moment as well. One that he refused, and because he refused to fight Dean, got beaten to a pulp after proclaiming that he would “be the one to watch you murder the world”. I have no doubt that Cas would still take that view over the alternative.

So Cas was emotionally beaten all episode. Forced to live through his worst moments and biggest regrets, and then have to face the fact that putting Dean above saving the world just isn’t right and he needs to prepare himself for that eventuality. If this episode and the last have told us anything, it’s that Cas is once again in a pretty low place. That much beating, both physical and emotional, are going to have an impact, and I am now really concerned about where Cas disappears to in episodes 4 to 6.

There is so much more to discuss, specifically in relation to what his view of his grace as “bells and whistles” could mean for human!Cas meta writers, not to mention the basic fact that any argument now about Cas hating being human just isn’t true. He still had himself, and he still believed in himself even when human, and even if he didn’t back then, he does now. He doesn’t see that period of his life as a total negative. That is HUGE.

Summary

A+ episode for Cas development. Amazing as that is being a bucklemming. It has also left us with lots to speculate and theorise which is always a great thing - keeping people tuning in. The Michael!Dean mystery as well as the Nick mystery probably won’t get revealed any time soon, but are enough to have people talking about them for a while.

Sam was still very much in Leader mode, though didn’t really get to do much this episode, but the way I see it, 14x01 was for Sam, 14x02 was for Cas, and I fully expect 14x03 to be a Dean heavy episode (which is fair since I am sure we are all missing him by now). Jack is also one to watch. His inner turmoil is textually acknowledged several times over and seeing as he is basically a mini Cas, the possibility that Jack could decide to do something drastic is probably very likely. I wonder if we will see Kelly’s parents again any time soon - I kinda hope not as I reckon that would spell certain doom for them.

It was a strong episode, and I enjoyed watching it (other than the Nick stuff). Probably my second favourite Bucklemming episode if I was to rank them all now which is very impressive (11x18 will always be top imo).

“So therefore, mass suicide. You’re welcome.”

Honestly, how many people have attempted to kill everyone now in their own way? Kirumi may have killed to escape, but she pushed forward and attempted to cause a riot which was actively trying to get them all killed in her place. Kokichi and Gonta had their trial in 4 and now, fresh off of Maki killing everyone in his effort to take Kokichi down, we’ve got K1-b0. 5/16 people took direct actions to take the entire class out! 5/16! And I mean, that’s outside of the mastermind, so could very well be 6/16!

THIS ENTIRE CLASS NEEDS - WELL, NEEDED - SERIOUS THERAPY

“Yup. Bye.”

NGL I really like the pictures and the 3D rendering of K1-b0. Some anime-style games can have some issues translating the art style to 3d rendering but they really did a good job.
