NMTDaily: Football Antics Part One

- I’m just cracking up at how nervous Beatrice is! The nervous babbling! And it is definitely because, since she hasn’t started school yet, this football game is the first time she’s seen Benedick since moving to Auckland- since they were 14, really. (I don’t think she was there when Ursula filmed his part of Vox Pops, or at least she was better able to avoid him then. No avoiding being seen here though!)

- Bea may be in denial, but her “holy shit my crush-that-got-away is Right Over There In Person” energy is radiating! Which is perfect adaptation work for Miss Starts The Play By Oh-So-Casually Asking About Benedick And Playing It Off With Insults.

- “We’re here to support Leo, we’re here to Support The Boys, we’re here to see Pedro, and Definitely No One Else, At All, Promise” 👀 I see you Beatrice

- “I’m sure he’ll be wonderful, and so will-“ *Extremely Long, Pointed Pause* “-everyone, really.” Hero knows what’s up!!! And Bea just assumes she’s talking about Claudio, which, yeah, but the way Hero looks really intently at Bea on this line and says it with such intention- she is teasing Bea about Ben here for sure.

- Bea and Hero are having a sass-off complete with impressions of each other and Ursula is all “just keep taking pictures, they’ll get tired eventually”. Ursula is a treasure.

- The sass-off is also great! I love that Hero, as nice as she is, can still hold her own against Beatrice here. It’s a good thing, because making fun of people is kind of a love language for Beatrice.

- Starting in on Meg again (poor Meg), as a way to seed some backstory that will matter later! (Robbie got kicked off the team, hmmmm.)

- And Bea immediately pivots to bring up Claudio. The fast forward through Hero’s gushing is so funny and cute. She was definitely trying to say Robert Pattinson reminds her of Claudio, which, I can see it. 2014 is calling again though, right at the end of the Twilight era. If this series were set much earlier we would definitely have heard Bea hating on Twilight, lol.

- “He’s nice!” being the only thing she can say, says a lot. And Ursula being the one who gets Hero to admit she thinks he’s cute, awww. The hiding behind the hair! The oohing over Hero’s crush is majorly bringing me back to what it was like to be a teenager, it’s adorable. Poor Hero lol

- Ah yes, “Leo says we can’t film the match” AKA the in-world explanation for not being able to make an actual football scene realistic. I say that with zero judgement. The workaround of Leo saying no is cleverly done, and makes sense since the only plot-relevant stuff goes on on the sidelines anyway.

- The little moment of Hero narrating the game! I love that. She’s so into it that she forgets she’s not supposed to mention Ben in front of Bea, and then she starts worrying about Claudio which is also very cute.

- (My brain instinctively: Ooh! Ben mention! First Ben mention by name in a Hero and Bea vlog!!!! Milestone!)

- Enter Meg! (and Robbie). “I’m going to be the real star, you just don’t know it yet!” An icon.

- Robbie throwing out a Game of Thrones reference, it’s like a signal that he’s sort of part of the group for now, but his energy is Off. Dark colors, never really looking at anyone but Meg. Bad vibes.

- And Meg and Robbie as a visual sign of Bea’s discomfort with relationships, her idea that they’re all PDA and no boundaries. That in Bea’s and to some degree Hero’s eyes, Meg chooses Robbie over their friendships, over homework, almost over her own self, and Bea does not want that imbalance for herself at all. But she doesn’t know how to express her discomfort and concern in any other way but scorn for Meg. So much character work for so many different characters in one episode at once, I love it.

- I love Ursula sticking up for Meg, even if it’s never particularly fun watching other people make out. This is an Ursula Appreciation Liveblog, and I’m also still loving her tumblr, btw.

- Part Two next and it’s time for the I Know You Of Old scene! Ahhh!

I believe part of Tommy's crisis is coming from a series of "failures" and feeling like he's lacking direction in his career. The daily vlog series didn't do as well as he had hoped, but I think his disappointment with the most recent merch drop is even more noticeable. Not only is he heavily marketing his merch (even his mother has retweeted his most recent merch plug), but he's grumbling about not making money from it on stream and just in general exhibiting an odd tension whenever he talks about it.

This is more speculative, but I also sense almost a bit of envy from him when he mentions his friends and their big projects. For example, him "jokingly" putting down Tubbo and the importance of his server and "jokingly" mentioning not being interested whenever Ranboo wanted to infodump about Generation Loss. It's almost as if he feels like he lacks his own big project and is subtly talking down on these projects to make him feel better (or even by making "having a girlfriend" sound like his next big content project/era, though that's a stretch). Obviously, joking about how much better he is than everyone and being "the main character" is a staple of Tommy's persona, but I think he's swinging more often between a sense of entitlement (making his friends come over and cook for him was definitely him egotripping) and self-deprecation.

I also notice that every other time he streams, even pre-dating the girlfriend reveal, Tommy acts as if we're entering into a new era of content, while most things seem to stay more or less the same. There's something about him constantly wanting to start over (there's a lot to unpack about his recent statement that his "gay era" is over, but to me the most striking thing was that he was basically asking to undo or move on from almost half a year of content for something presumably "new" in the so-called girlfriend era) that makes me think he's struggling to find his footing when it comes to content again.

I don't know if he's exhibiting textbook Type 6 disintegration signs right now, but I don't think he's doing great, at least not when it comes to content creation.

I had a lot of interesting conversations in DM’s around the vlog era because the mismatch of goals/expectations and outcome was very pronounced if you knew to keep an eye on it. It was clear from his fundraising goals and the pricing of the donation wall that he expected to be able to land way more big donors than he did, and if I’m not mistaken by the end, he started listing every name that donated, which if I recall weren’t that many considering the scale of the project.

Following the vlog series with Cheeto pants immediately was unfortunate. I think it was around the end of one of the finale lore streams that I realised he was a little desperate with the drop-- orange is a risky color, I would wager it’s those pieces that aren’t selling well. Semi-ethical merch is expensive and, not gonna lie, it’s a bit socially dicey to be flagging inniter in public. I understand why he leans kidcore for his branding, but it seems like the people who want it can’t afford it and the people who can afford it don��t want it.

I know it’s only been a week-ish since the GF reveal but if he really tries to wrap his go-to shtick around some dodgy girlfriend jokes we’re in for a rough time. He cracked off a few full-body cringers in the girlfriend stories stream and man if we aren’t back on track for the woman jokes. Except now they’ve got a target. Mmmmmmmm, hope that’s not permanent, since people have been developing a real disgust for that kind of humor for about a decade now and it’s not going away. Oh gayinnit, I will miss you.

He keeps talking about January, which I am curious about. Sometimes projects that youtubers hype up and want to be big actually don’t hit the way they’re supposed to, or at least it isn’t the guaranteed hit that they wanted it to be, but I want to keep my mind open for what’s coming since I genuinely can’t tell what it is.

I think if he was going to Three under stress this would be a lot messier and more reactive than it is. I think right now he’s relatively earnest despite being lost, and I’m sensing a lot of hope from him, which does imply that he's looking foward. If these next few months wind up being hard on him and nothing winds up working out, that might really freak him out, but he’s still a long ways off from objectively bombing so we’ll see.

Thank you so much for introducing us to Big Ethel Energy! My friends have been trying to get me on Webtoons for quite some time but it looks like I just needed the right story. Ethel is so underappreciated and the butt of many jokes so it's refreshing to see her in the spotlight! Happy holidays!

... unfortunately I'm not liking it as much as I thought I would. I was excited when the news about Big Ethel Energy came out because I was curious about how they're gonna tell the Riverdale gang story through Big Ethel's POV. It's nice that you're enjoying it, so please don't let my opinion affect yours. It's still too early to judge the entire series since they've only released 16 episodes so far (17 by the time this gets posted), so there's still a chance that I would change my mind. Maybe I'll like what happens in the end. I don't know.

My main problem with the webtoon is probably how the writer is trying so hard to paint Jughead as an "immature jerk" when he's just an introverted foodie who doesn't go out of his way in the name of conformity. The characters are all adults in the webtoon, so it's perfectly fine for Jughead to work on his vlog instead of choosing to hang out with the gang. Also, can we really blame him if he's not romantically interested in Big Ethel? Not reciprocating someone else's feelings - regardless of how genuine they are - is not a crime. It's not like he was purposely leading her on (like Archie does to Betty). And no, saying "hi" to her that one time in episode 5 doesn't mean he's trying to keep her hopes up. People should really stop confusing friendliness or politeness with romantic interest. But like I said, it's probably too early to judge the entire thing, so I'm hoping there's a plot twist somewhere that will sort of redeem Jughead in the eyes of those rabid commenters who bash him every chance they get.

Another problem I have with this webtoon is how they gave Betty's journalistic sensibilities to Big Ethel. The Blue and Gold staff in the comics has constantly changed over the years except for Betty. Though she sometimes share the editor-in-chief position with either Archie or Dilton, Betty has always been a reporter for the school paper. She even became an intern for a local station during the Betty and Me era. Writing is also one of her many talents. She's the go-to girl for any competition that involves journalism or creative writing. It's also not an exaggeration to say that Betty Cooper is also Miss Grundy (and probably every other Riverdale High teacher's) favorite student. While I appreciate the fact that they didn't make webtoon Ethel's interests revolve around Jughead's (like how she uses food and dogs to lure Jughead into giving her a bit of attention), I also don't think it's right to give her the qualities that were heavily associated with Betty in the comics. Big Ethel is a fine cook, a reliable babysitter, and a talented athlete. She also loves dogs. I do understand that the writer must come up with a way to rope Big Ethel back into whatever's going on in Riverdale, but I don't think forcing her to write a book about the town is the only way to make her come home.

The art is very pretty though. I'm still not used to the character design they chose for Big Ethel, but the illustrator is really talented. It seems like she's on a personal mission to make everyone in the webtoon look hot and that's okay, but it somehow makes it difficult for me, the reader, to accept that Big Ethel was such an "ugly duckling" in high school when the character design looked really pretty. I mean, it's still possible for someone as pretty as her to have insecurities (especially if Veronica Lodge exists to crush every bit of self-esteem she has left), but it's quite hard to buy Big Ethel's "glow up" from high school to adulthood when she basically looked the same.

Sorry for ranting. I didn't really mean to, but I guess I got carried away. Again, please don't let my opinion of the webtoon (so far) affect your enjoyment of it. I promised myself that I'm gonna read it until the end, so I really might still change my mind. Maybe I'll eventually like it? I mean, it did give us this cute Bughead interaction from episode 5, so I'm gonna cross my fingers and still hope for the best. Anyway, thank you for always supporting this blog. God. I’ve written a couple of Academy Era (focused on the Deca) crack fanfics and I still have to translate them to English. They’re pure garbage but I love them. I have a lot of fun writing crack fics because they’re easier and I can ignore whatever piece of canon I want just for the laughs

I don’t think so, but Twitter definitively has. I remember a couple years ago I was curious to see what voltron was about and watched a few episodes, it was ok, fun and cute but the fandom was so annoying I stopped watching it for good and don’t care about it enough to pick it up again

I had definitively forgotten about supernatural until I saw it all over my dashboard in the year of our lord 2020 lmao like in my wholock days I tried to watch the show because everyone on my dash (is it still called dashboard?) was talking about it and I watched about 8 episodes before dropping it. But seeing it again on the dash was actually a happy surprise because the memes are too funny hahaha

I’m extremely shy irl and on the internet as well but I wanna say that @janeturenne is one of the best authors ever and her fanfics are a blessing in my life; also @thebraxiatelcollection who brings awesome content to my dash and is also one of the best authors. And of course, you, Jack, also one of the best authors god I’m so BLESSED

Uhhh I guess I’m neutral about the current companions. They’re not my favorites but I don’t really dislike them - they had a lot of potential and chibs came up with some good storylines but did not develop them well in my opinion. I think Graham is a fun grandpa whom I’m going to miss when he leaves; Ryan is cool and could’ve done a lot more if the writers had kept a few things, it’d be awesome if he vlogged all of their adventures. He’s like the one I was curious to see more but sadly didn’t feel a connection; and Yaz, I hope she’ll keep growing and that her friendship with the Doctor will finally be developed to a level we can connect to her.

It sounds weird because with the fam it’s always ‘what I wish could have been’ because I never felt really connected to them :(

Ok... I don’t really ship Rey/Finn but I think it’s one of the sweetest ships ever, and if they ended up together I’d be happy. They love each other and are there for each other always so, yeah :D

I don’t know if I got the question right but it’s three things I wish I saw more in my main fandom? Well, if it’s that, then, 3 things about the Doctor Who fandom: 1) people having more civilized or light-hearted discussions about things. Like, I genuinely disliked an 8th doctor audio I listened once that my friends loved, and they made fun of me and we joked about it. Also once we were in a live twitch video playing among us and discussing doctor who, and then we got into a ship “discourse” as a joke and nobody really cared and just laughed because everyone knew it’s fictional shit so why get mad over it? 2) Doctor Who has a titanic amount of content, it’s all canon but at the same time it’s not, so who cares? If you want to listen to Big Finish audios and if you can afford it, then lisiten; if you can’t, it’s okay, no one has the right to tell you you’re less of a fan. Just tell them to fuck off; 3) The best way to keep fandom alive is by creating content. Here in my local fandom we have several podcasts dedicated to all areas of the whoniverse (the show, the expanded universe, the audios, etc), those old fandom websites who do serious work to bring news to the fans, people who make subtitles for the classic series (we don’t have it available here so they do their best to make it accessible to other fans), accounts dedicated to promoting dr who fans who create content, and we even have people making their own audiodramas with dw characters and writing book-lenght fanfiction to help explain the show to people who’ve never watched it, and a great variety of things. I’ve seen a few of these things in the international fandom, mostly by older fans, so I wish younger fans about my age who have the means to make this kind of stuff would make it too. Maybe there’d be less twitter drama out there lol

The Master is a big fan of musicals and in the 77 years he spent on earth he watched every single one ever. I’m gonna be bold and say that when he was young, still Koschei, he was an artist, and thought about dropping everything to become an actor on Gallifrey. Time Lords do appreciate art, and have their own plays, but it’s just the same old and boring ones the young people don’t care about. The Master then created a shocking performance that was way ahead of its time and the older Time Lords were so appalled they banned him from writing and presenting plays and that’s his villain origin story

What is Jacksepticeye?

Joy

The Jacksepticeye channel and community is many people’s Happy Place, including my own. The interactivity, creativity, and positivity of this community never ceases to show itself. Seán can make a joke or meme out of just about anything, and the community will catch on and everyone will add their own spin. Coming online to our internet family feels like coming home in its own way.

Advocate

Seán and the community advocate for mental health and breaking down the stigmas surrounding these issues. The community is very supportive and helps to lift up those struggling. Seán gives his best advice to those reaching out, encouraging many to recognize their issues and find help.

Community

You literally can’t talk about the Jacksepticeye channel and not mention the community. Much like its host, our internet family is one of the most supportive, positive, interactive, creative communities out there. We have our ups and downs, our hypes and lulls, but in the end, it always comes back to that lovely spot where everyone can express themselves and improve and grow together.

Kindhearted

Seán genuinely cares about everyone in this community, and doesn’t let us forget it. His subscriber milestone videos are full to the brim with thanks, and he never considers these his own triumphs, but ours. Anyone who’s ever met him has said he’s just as caring in person, and the revered Jacksepticeye HugTM is known far and wide. Despite not knowing most of us personally, he feels like a close friend because he listens to us and treats us each as individual people instead of just another view.

Series

The lifeblood of the channel is all the fantastic series that have brought us together and kept us company over the years. From the horror experiences of Outlast, FNAF: Sister Location, and Stories Untold, to the sillier yet just as beloved Happy Wheels, Human Fall Flat, and Jazzpunk, to the more serious The Static Speaks My Name, The Beginner’s Guide, and That Dragon, Cancer, to the fantastic stories of Undertale, Detroit: Become Human, Journey, Night in the Woods, The Last Guardian, Shadow of the Colossus, The Walking Dead, and God of War, video games have a monumental place in this community and channel.

Encouraging

Being part of this internet family means encouraging and supporting each other, because everyone needs that sometimes. There are times that all we need is the reassurance that we can make it through the day, that there are people who believe in us. Sometimes we need to be reminded to keep up that good fight, to keep trying our best, because life is worth living and fighting for.

PMA

PMA, Positive Mental Attitude, has been the driving philosophy of the channel since the end of 2017. As explained by Seán himself, it’s not about being happy all the time and pushing all other emotions away, it’s about taking the time to process through the negative feelings and work back up to a positive mindset. PMA has helped and means so much to so many people, and the community wouldn’t be the same without it.

Tour

The Jacksepticeye How Did We Get Here Liveshow Comedy World Tour (do you have 90 minutes?) of 2017-2018 was an era all its own on the channel. Seán traveled all over the world to put on a show for us, reaching for as many places as possible to include as many of us as possible. Within those 90 minutes, he told stories and jokes, played games with the audience, and left us with an important message about growing as an individual and as a community. For those who couldn’t make it to any of the shows, he did tour vlogs for one leg and those who did go posted pictures and shared their experiences. It brought the community together in a way it never had been before.

Involvement

Seán is one of the most interactive content creators on youtube, and it’s no exaggeration; he’s online with the community frequently, talking to us and appreciating our creations. He makes videos like Reading Your Comments and Septicart, has played several fangames as series on the channel, goes to multiple conventions every year to meet us in person, and holds charity livestreams monthly that bring together tens of thousands of us to support good causes.

Charity Livestreams

For 8 months last year and as a goal of every month this year, the channel has hosted charity livestreams for organizations like the Make a Wish Foundation, Crisis Text Line, Charity: Water, and many, many others. Tens of thousands of generous souls show up to each one, reaching goals of hundreds of thousands of dollars donated to these wonderful organizations, with Seán himself leading the charge with hours spent playing games for the streams, reading donation messages, and donating thousands himself. The total over all streams is almost $2 million.

Egos

One of the channel’s most passionate and creative projects, the egos are far more than what they seem. Seán gave these characters life, but the community took these ideas and made them their own. There are so many different theories, fanart of all types, and hours spent searching through frames and videos to find every glitch, every hint, every scrap of information possible. These are stories influenced by the audience just as much as the creator (and Robin, resident editor; credit where credit’s due, and there’s due a lot of credit).

Years

This channel, over the last 6 years, has done incredible things. $1 million and counting raised for charity, the How Did We Get Here tour, the PMA movement, the amazing series, the hilarious collabs, the tearful vlogs; all the hilarious, heart-wrenching, terrifying, and elated moments, the struggles and the successes, the small victories and milestones as well as the big ones, and, of course, the 22 million people who’ve joined in along the way. Look how far we’ve come.

Everyone

Being part of this community for the past 2 years has been one of the best experiences of my life, so I decided to make something for this milestone. Using the channel name, I came up with a word for each letter and did my best to compile a list of some of my favorite parts of being here (thank you so much @lum1natrix; your gif tutorial was a lifesaver). I obviously missed a lot, but I had a blast putting this together, so I hope it’s enough. Congratulations @therealjacksepticeye and everyone in this wonderful community; 22 million subscribers is a victory for all of us!

❛ it’s another day for new yorker, diamond wu. paparazzi spotted the jessica vu lookalike strolling down broadway street in yves saint laurent, a fabulous choice. according to tmz, you just had your nineteenth birthday bash. during the seventeen years of living in the city, you’ve gained a reputation for being dimwitted, but don’t stress, being effervescent can make up for it. ( cisfemale & she/her ) + ( jazzy, 21, she/her, est. )

once upon a time in asia ,

first things first, diamond’s family is huge. her family had money before they had money, before they had money. her ancestors were affluent vietnamese traders, merchants, blacksmiths, etc. so basically, old money, ancient money really.

diamond charlotte-bian wu was born in ho chai minh city, vietnam to two prominent young people in the south east asian high society. two socialites who made names for themselves outside of their respective families. her mother, basically the asian princess diana, and her father who was planting the seeds for his resort, hotel, and cruise line early on. a pioneer in the modern era vacation industry no doubt.

her mother passed away when she was only two years old, but in their short time together she was very much the apple of her mothers eye. they went everywhere together, and were honestly attached at the hip. matching outfits, covering lifestyle magazines, and refusing the care of nannies, they were no doubt best friends.

following her mothers death, diamond and her father relocated to new york city, to oversee construction of the very first wu hotel, much to their families dismay, a year later on october 6, 2003. diamonds third birthday, the grand opening served as her third birthday party actually. business has been booming every since, and coincidentally became their new home.

new york state of mind ,

with the thriving business that soon developed into 570+ hotels, three resorts, and a cruise line. it often kept her father on his at all times, and it caused him to rarely be home as diamond was often left in the care of nannies, maids, and chefs. something her mother never wanted for her, and in stubborn fashion, her father refused to send her back to any family member.

she easily developed a self-centered attitude at a young age due to no real parental figure in her life, no real guidance and her father “made up” for it with numerous gifts. it was a fun childhood, but that one thing was always missing. an absent father, and four stepmoms later.

sending diamond to the best schools didn’t help either, she barely learned anything, or even attempted to learn. which definitely backfired on her end, it caused her to be sharp as spoon. how she graduated from high school? a mystery really.

who am i really?

refusing a college education, developing a passion for anything of the sort drove a wedge between diamond and her father. even though he started this wealthy industry all his own, he was still viewed as a lesser because he left home, and took his heir(ess) of a daughter with him.

fed up with.... well, everything, diamond started taking advantage, really taking advantage of her wealth after high school. soon gaining a more impressive following on social media, she launched a youtube channel in the beginning of 2018, one that varied in hilarious fashion, makeup, and style reviews, and also vlogs of her affluent lifestyle. again, to her entire families dismay.

personality

diamond is a very unique character, coming from the literal definition of greatness, she was always held to a higher standard from the start of things, which she swayed away from more and more as time went on.

she can literally be summed up as “ rich in dollars, poor in sense “ she’s definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed. dumb as hell really, i guess that’s what happens when you barely make it out of high school.

her work ethic, surprisingly, is poor. until it comes to her brand, which she found out early on. she’ll desperately try to ease her way out of any labor, paperwork, whatever it may be, being lazy and complacent may be her fatal flaw.

as the un-professed (but obviously known) family disappointment, she’s been convinced that she won’t ever be “good” enough like her cousins, or anyone else in the family, she’s been put down so many times, she literally just gave in to it, and became what her family viewed her as. lazy, irresponsible, and stupid.

growing up with money running in her family and being spoiled rotten, she can be very greedy, basically... her way or the high way. however, she still manages to be somewhat more heartwarming if the occasion needs it.

but, negatives aside, it seems nobody really truly knows about diamond. if anything, she’s very self aware of her flaws and quietly does her best to improve, in some aspects. however, if its not a fashion magazine, she will not be picking up.

she enjoys being self-sufficient, which is exactly why she takes great pride in her youtube channel, its something unique and all her own. she’s gotten over five million subscribers in as little over a year. she’s attending award shows, movie premieres, nyfw, the girl has done what she needed to do.

she’s not exactly ALL that dumb, she’s actually very knowledgeable in things she’s interested in. she can recount the history of makeup, origin of chanel, examine and cite fabric on clothing well, etc. she’s got a hidden depth to her beyond the sunny disposition she puts out there

headcanons ,

says dumb shit half of the time. especially on social media and thru her yt channel, i mean just look at her tweets.

trials and tribulations aside, she’s honestly living in her own fantasy world as of late. she’s very much a nonconformist. she only associates with her toxic family when she has to go to some family reunion or wedding. where she acts as the boujee cousin who doesn’t interact wit anybody.

she’ll do anything for he youtube channel and thats final. clickbait? don’t know her. you said we’re “BREAKING INTO BEYONCE’S HOUSE, DANCING TO SINGLE LADIES IN BLUE IVY’S ROOM” then thats exactly whats happening.

her AND her father are the fam disappointments. and he’s trying his best with her because he just knows he effed up big time, and can obviously tell his wife/her mother’s death was the worst thing for their relationship too.

fresh outta high school, still has lots and lots of maturing to do.

has a female pet corgi. the only thing besides herself that she can take care of. dj, or diamond jr. as she likes to call her.

Change the Channel

A lot of people have been talking about their experiences with Channel Awesome in the wake of the 60+ page document released by Allison Pregler and several other former content creators for Channel Awesome. I figured I might throw my own experience with the site and its people (mostly Doug) too while the topic is relevant, even considered dusting off the old camera I got for Christmas to film a video but allergy season is upon us and I’m coughing up my lungs so the written word it is.

I was a frequent user of YouTube in the early days of its inception, mostly to look up viral videos and just go on a stream of pointlessness for hours on end with each recommended vid in the sidebar (mostly consisting of parodies to Star Wars, LotR, and entire Simpsons episodes uploaded before the great purge of early 2008). In all that time between 2006 and 2007, reviewers like the Angry Video Game Nerd and The Nostalgia Critic eluded me. I saw plenty of the 5 Second Movie clips and thought they were hysterical but didn’t even make the connection that they were made by a “Nostalgia Critic” until around the end of 2009, when a friend of mine at school told me to look up NC’s review of Sonic the Hedgehog (the weird TV show and the futuristic evil Jim Cummings one). I finally gave in which led me to watching some of his other, recent reviews like the “Star Wars Holiday Special” which was freaking hysterical (and still brings a warm smile to my face just thinking about it). By the time the new year rolled around and I had discovered That Guy With The Glasses I was hooked.

For a while I stuck to watching reviews on YouTube when fans would rip them from the main site, but decided to eventually support the site itself where I mostly stuck to NC videos but also watched content from the other producers when it interested me; Spoony and his Final Fantasy reviews, Linkara and any comic with a subject material I was familiar with, Marzgurl and her Don Bluth retrospective, so on and so forth. Like many other people, I wasn’t keeping up with every producer’s videos weekly like I was with NC, but when I decided to watch something else their content was worth it, being funny and informative all at once, even creating new branches of my interest and giving me new perspectives on media criticism.

I watched Nostalgia Critic religiously every week and, sorry to say, started to take his opinion as gospel, and the opinions of other reviewers as well, treating certain movies and shows as bad just because they said so and didn’t have an opinion for myself for the longest time. It was when I started to pay attention to Doug Walker himself and his philosophy that you should like what you like and every movie is a miracle that I started to chill out and even disagree with his opinions at times (I remember his “Little Nemo” review made me seek out that movie and I actually quite enjoyed it).

TGWTG was a formative site for me in my high school years, developing much of my sense of humor and how I look at movies. I watched all the anniversary specials, started to watch a greater portion of producers that included Lindsay and Kyle’s more analytical reviews and Brad Jones’s and Matthew Buck’s mix of cynicism and snark with genuine analytical praise and criticism. I even started to look at music critics like Paw or Todd even though I can’t judge music for shit (if it has a catchy beat I’ll more or less dig it, I’m not picky). I always imagined when I moved out for college (yeah, how’d that work out for ya, younger me) that I would start my own review series in the vein of these online personalities and even be picked up for the site where I too could join in on the anniversary movies and have a swell time and make friends with the people I looked up to and have a good time filming huge crossover events with them (in hindsight I can only imagine what role Doug would have me play in them, if I was even deemed important to be in them at all). Whenever people criticized the anniversary movies I just shrugged it off and said, “Yeah, they’re dumb, but I like em anyway,” and when rumors starting going around about some upside down crucifixion going on I shrugged them off as just rumors (and to be fair it wasn’t upside down but the real thing isn’t much better).

Anyway, around the time when To Boldly Flee came I enjoyed the movie a lot (I only saw it the once and I was eighteen, eighteen-year-old me and present me don’t get on anymore) and thought it was a bittersweet conclusion to The Nostalgia Critic but was excited to see what new projects Doug and the company would do after its conclusion. Plus the other contributors still had their content to keep TGWTG going strong into the foreseeable future. At least I thought.

I didn’t hate Demo Reel, but I didn’t like it all that much either. I only caught around a few episodes before losing interest, saying I’d get back into it eventually but never going out of my way to see them. By accounts they got better as they went along and I was interested in the episode that paid tribute to Elizabeth Hartman (which I think is the same episode that had Mara Wilson and Arin Hanson? I might be wrong (I didn’t even know who Arin was at the time but hindsight is 20/20)), but I just put off watching them until, oh look, NC’s back. At the time I thought this was interesting, there was plenty he could still do with the character given his new ground rules and the emphasis on skits gave the show a different tune that I felt, at the time, kept it fresh from what it was before. I missed the simplicity of the earlier reviews but I happily stuck with the NC again, as well as the same creators I’d happily watched before and plenty more I started to watch like Phelous (around the time he did that weird Aladdin meets Pagemaster movie, I used to rent that from Hollywood Video all the freaking time).

It was around this tumultuous time that Doug actually kinda started to annoy me. Never to the point where I stopped watching NC, but he sort of seemed to forget his whole “Like what you like,” message and outright attacked fans who disagreed with him. Certain jokes in his reviews rubbed me the wrong way (if Irate Gamer can’t get away with blowing up Ubisoft cuz they wouldn’t let him into a conference, you can’t get away with pretending to blow up Happy Madison just because they make shit movies) and he had a general vindictiveness to those who liked movies like “Man of Steel” or “The Lorax” that just seemed mean spirited and not a funny little video meant to entertain (though I guess the signs were always there like when he added in a dig at “Avatar” in his “Conan” review for no reason). But by and by he seemed to mellow out (no doubt dealing with problems letting go of Demo Reel and how big a success he thought it would be) and I still watched his stuff, including the vlogs he did with Rob regarding “Avatar” (the good one, hey I did it too!), “Korra,” “Adventure Time,” and any recent movie that came out. I started to agree with them less and less but they were still entertaining guys and I liked what they were doing.

Some of the shadier stuff going on at the site more or less flew over my head. The game show they did was pretty much “Demo Reel” part two for me in how much interest I had in it and that faded from public consciousness pretty quickly, and it was around the time the site switched from TGWTG to just Channel Awesome that a real shift began to become more noticeable. People were leaving. People I may not have watched all the time, but they were leaving, often times unannounced and seemingly unprovoked (because quite a few of them were). I read about what happened to Allison, aka Obscurus Lupa, who I had watched on and off again and thought that was pretty shitty, and got a general grasp that the management of CA itself wasn’t very good from what she and Lindsay alluded to (or just straight up said, they really should’ve had some NDAs if they cared so much about how they look) in some posts on Tumblr or Twitter but I still carried on watching NC and the other creators on the site mostly because I just figured what every fan figured at the time, Doug was mostly innocent and it was Michaud and Rob who were the real strings behind big decisions like who stays and goes (I liked Rob fine, but even back then I knew he could be kind of an ass).

More and more people from the classic era of TGWTG were leaving or not producing as much for the site as they did and that was a shame. CA was never what TGWTG felt like to me, even if the purpose was to put more focus on the other producers (supposedly (hell, TGWTG did a way better job of featuring producers in my opinion even if it wasn’t perfect)). But whatever, I carried on every Tuesday watching NC, watching other creators when their stuff interested me, but it still wasn’t quite the same as before, and I had become more aware of the general bad experience most people had filming the anniversary movies even if the full extent of that didn’t come until a few days ago.

It was really when Lewis announced that he had left and I found the Change the Channel hashtag that I started to take notice of these stories, finding plenty of them on my own from the links to Twitter conversations many of the former contributors were having before reading them on the Google doc. I was torn, wondering if I should boycott NC with all that I had read and decided to make it a temporary one until the doc came out and to see if he or CA would provide a statement. Well, the doc came out and the apology not long after. And yeah, I moved it to a permanent ban after that bullshit.

I’ve given up watching people I loved before, JonTron and his racist bullshit was the last straw in supporting anything he did, and even with the Me Too movement I’ve given up any kind of support for people like Kevin Spacey who I used to love as an actor (now it’s pretty easy to see how he was able to play such scumbag villains over and over again). I know Doug isn’t a Nazi or Nazi sympathizer, and to my knowledge he hasn’t used his position to sexually take advantage of anyone (though he has turned a blind eye to others doing the same and the same can’t be said for taking advantage of people in other ways), but I just couldn’t watch stuff directly made by him and for Channel Awesome with all this information. It wouldn’t be right, even with an adblocker.

I don’t mean to threaten the livelihood of people on his team like Malcolm or Tamara, I like them a great deal and they’re very talented, heck I even enjoyed the skits on NC a lot more than most because of them (and Rachel, she was great too). But I said to myself until an actual apology is listed and some form of action is taken to truly better the site, I wouldn’t watch them. Others have suggested and I have thought the same, that the best thing to do would be to fire Michaud, though I realize this would create a slew of problems given that he owns the IP for NC and is the founder of CA. Still, some form of acknowledgement from the Walkers would go a long way to bettering the public response to all this. More and more contributors have left in the wake of this document, either out of fear for their own image or to show solidarity with the many complaints levied toward the site (and their reasons are completely valid no matter what, they’re trying to make a living), looking at the site today it’s practically a ghost town. I don’t blame those that have stayed for anything, but the reputation of CA is tarnished and at this point, especially with that piss-poor “apology,” it’s going to take several huge leaps to get it back.

I realize the purpose of Change the Channel was never to create a boycott of NC or any of the Walker’s content, at least by the majority of those who contributed to the docs, and those who choose to boycott do so of their own volition. Well, that’s my volition. No matter how much NC shaped my sense of humor in my younger years and inspired me to look at movies critically myself, I can’t deny the damage that Doug and Rob have been complicit in nor turn a blind eye to the shady practices they, Michaud, and past executives on the site have done.

I really do wish that what was seemingly apparent in front of the camera, that this was a site filled of talented people who were also good friends having a good time, was true behind the scenes as well. People have been hurt, assaulted, taken advantage of, and tossed aside when they were no longer useful to the site. It’s not right, and I’m literally changing the channel until actual change is made.

Web Series: Carmilla

The lesbian vampire web series inspired by the novella of the same name!

The synopsis from IMDb is as follows:

Small town girl Laura Hollis has just finally moved out to go to Silas University. When her missing roommate is replaced without explanation, Laura vows to find out what is happening on campus while she deals with her new roomy... a vampire.

So, right off the bat I want to say immediately that anyone who loved the book Carmilla and is hoping for a web series that is just like it or at least fairly close to it, is going to be very disappointed. Don’t go into it thinking that’s what you’re going to find. You aren’t. You will be disappointed. I realize I’m repeating myself, but it bears repeating. You will be disappointed if you start to watch this web series thinking it’s going to be like the book.

Now, on to what it’s actually about. This web series is probably best taken as live-action fanfiction (good fanfiction, though), bringing the characters into modern times and a modern setting and with modern situations.

What does that mean? It means that this doesn’t take place in the Victorian era. It means that it takes place now, in the 2000s. Laura is reimagined as Laura Hollis (played by Elise Bauman), a college girl, adorably nerdy. We’re introduced to her when she decides to use a college assignment as a video or vlog diary of her quest to find out what happened to her fun-loving, if irresponsible, party girl roommate after she goes missing and nobody seems to notice or care but her.

Not only does her roommate go missing in such mysterious and suspicious circumstances, but she is suddenly given a new roommate to replace her old one.

Enter Carmilla Karnstein (played by Natasha Negovanlis), the new roommate whom Laura doesn’t get along with right from the start. I will admit, Carmilla doesn’t make it easy for her and seems to be totally uninterested in the missing roommate and completely unsupportive of Laura’s attempts to find her. Things progress from there, with wacky mistakes and misunderstandings and even an impromptu puppet show. I know how that sounds, but trust me, it’s hilariously rude.

Laura and Carmilla are not the only characters mentioned in the book who get upgrades. While there are definitely new characters who get added to the mix that were never in the book, Madame Perrodon is reimagined as Lola Perry (played by Annie Briggs), often referred to only as Perry, and Mademoiselle De Lafontaine is reimagined simply as S. LaFontaine (played by Kaitlyn Alexander) who is nonbinary and prefers to be called simply LaFontaine. And anyone familiar with the book knows that Carmilla herself had a caretaker, a woman who seemed to help her gain access to homes where she could choose a victim. Not much is really known or explained about the woman in the book, although she refers to Carmilla as her daughter. Whether that’s true or not is anyone’s guess, but probably not. However, in the web series she is reimagined as the fearsome and mysterious dean of Silas University. In the first season you don’t see her, although her presence is certainly unavoidable, and in the seasons after that she is played by Annie Briggs.

While the first season involves mostly women, there are some male characters, although it’s also skimpy on people of color. The first season is my favorite season, but seasons 2 and 3 are also great and in those seasons there is also no shortage of Carmilla and Laura shown kissing and a very much obviously implied sex life together. A reciprocated relationship with genuine feelings on both parts, and PDA were things we didn’t really get in the book and it’s nice to see them in this updated version.

Also in seasons 2 and 3 there are a lot more characters who are people of color. Quite unfortunately, however, most of them are bad guys or exist in the grey areas skirting the bad guy category.

In addition to lesbians and nonbinary characters, we also have male characters who aren’t afraid of the idea of menstruation or the things used to deal with that, and we have man-woman relationships that are simply friendships and both are fine with that.

While I won’t say that there weren’t problems or that they couldn’t do better, this series did make a clear attempt to be inclusive of characters of color, gender identities and romantic and sexual orientations that don’t often get a lot of attention or are usually used as eye candy for the male gaze or as though the characters are broken in some way and need to be fixed. This series did not do that to them and I appreciated that.

I really did love this series a lot and I absolutely recommend it. It is funny, quirky, inclusive in many ways, and thoroughly engrossing. But if you go into it expecting it to be something that it is not you will be disappointed by and that feeling may very well ruin the series for you. Don’t do that, because this is a great series. Take it by itself, as its own thing, inspired by but not based upon the book of the same name.

As far as I can tell, the series is finished (and that ending? Will knock your socks off). It has 3 main seasons, as well as a bonus Season Zero that seems to take place between seasons 2 and 3. It also has quite a few interesting extras bonus content that are fun and hilarious to watch. In addition to all of this, they are currently working on a movie for the series.

The episodes are super short and I don’t think any of them truly break 20 minutes long.

The series can be watched for free on YouTube, at the KindaTV channel and appears to be sponsored, at least in part, by Kotex. Which is hilarious, when you think about it because periods...lesbian vampires...get it? Lol.

You DO NOT need to have read the book first in order to understand or enjoy the series. They really are that different from each other, the difference is as stark as night and day. I am not kidding. I can’t stress that enough.
