I recently finished reading What If It’s Us by Adam Silvera and Becky Albertalli, and I honestly still can’t make up my mind about whether or not I loved this book. It had me laughing, crying and sometimes had me kicking my feet while laying down on my bed.
(Here’s a spoiler warning because I don’t want to censor my ranting and idk what to consider a spoiler so read at your own risk)
I think I’m on the fence about it because of the way it ended (absolutely genius writing on their part but I need the closure!!). And yes, I absolutely plan on reading the second book.
The storyline itself felt kinda realistic?? I know the meet ups and the way they found each other wasn’t totally devoid of coincidence and that bit of magic, but it still felt possible. If Craigslist wasn’t a thing, wouldn’t all poster boards in coffee shops be filled with a “missed connections” section??
The characters were absolutely lovable. Arthur was a bit too much for me at times, but I still loved him. He was very charming and he always came off as very kind and sweet.
Ben. I just. I absolutely loved Ben. I’m not gonna lie, I was a bit hesitant when they introduced him as a white-passing Puerto Rican because that kind of weight to a backstory can be challenging to portray, but the authors absolutely nailed it. Whenever he talked about his experiences, it was all cohesive and the struggle came through without letting it overshadow all the good things about his culture and family. It also didn’t become his only personality trait so that’s always amazing. And his parents. I loved the love between them as a family and how much they supported him.
Dylan & Samantha were so cute. Dylan absolutely deserves Ben and Ben absolutely deserves Dylan. Their bromance is amazing. Please send fan fiction my way about those two hanging out or getting Dylan ready for his wedding or something.
(Second spoiler warning because the next part is about the ending,, just in case)
The way Ben and Arthur handled their relationship also felt relatable. It put a lot of teen romantic comedies into perspective for me because how come the teens always know what to say or how to act on a first date?? Especially when they claim they’ve never done it before?? Ben and Arthur’s first date felt more real to me than anything I’ve seen/read before. Especially because of course Ben would feel more comfortable going back to something familiar and of course Arthur wouldn’t make it a big deal if he wanted to see this guy again.
Ultimately, I think it was Ben’s fear of accepting the good things from the universe and Arthur’s inexperience that made their decision feel right for themselves and I respect that. They grew a lot throughout the book, but I’m hoping that in the sequel they both see through all of that.
Overall I give it a 9/10!
I am currently waiting for the sequel to become available in the Libby app because of course they don’t have this gem in my small town library.

Rumor Has It - Tom Holland (High School AU)
Pairing:  Jock!Tom x Musical!Reader, BFF!Haz x Reader
This is my entry for @t-holland2080‘s writing challenge, but since I took a writing break from here, I didn't write it. The prompt was an Adele related quote and tbf, I've had this idea for about a month. So, I thought of mixing them up together. I've been re-watching Glee. Hence, the high school au and the Glee inspired stuff throughout this one shot.
Prompt: "You're so dramatic." "That's rich coming from the person who acts like everything is an Adele song."
Add yourself to my taglist if you’re cool x
5.3k words omg lmao hope y’all enjoy I guess
Part 2
* * * *
Rumors. No one liked them, but every day there seemed to be a rumor made up by someone. Rumors tear other people down in a lot of ways. The idea of lies spreading everywhere wasn't ideal for everyone, yet people seem to really believe them. No one knows who starts a new rumor and no one knows how they come up with it. Rumors are basically the outcome of a person's creativity put into terrible, terrible use.
Last week, someone spread a rumor about you getting your lips fixed even though you didn't. Whoever said it was clearly false, because you wouldn't want to put your talent at risk even though it wouldn't really affect your voice.
The rumors had different themes every week. Last week, it was all about someone getting any part of their body changed. This week, however, was all about break ups. Of course, your relationship with Tom wasn't spared by that rumor.
You were dating a popular guy. Of course they'll be rumors about you two breaking up. Only this time, it felt real.
Everyday you felt like Tom was slipping away from you and you didn't want that. You didn't want your favorite person out of your life yet. You've only been dating for a year and a half and you actually planned to have a future with him. You were sure.
You already had everything planned out. You were moving to New York to pursue your Broadway dreams and Tom would move with you. Both of you were applying for colleges there and you were so excited.
You were settling with him. The only question you asked yourself every night was: 'Is Tom settling for me too?' You weren't stupid, though. You knew you were losing him to the captain of the cheer leading squad. How cliché, right? He would always talk about her, he would talk to her, walk her to class and go as far as comparing her to you. It hurt. What hurt most was that he didn't even notice he was doing all of those things.
"So what'll you do with the whole Tom and what's-her-name thing?" Harrison asked you when you both entered the glee club's classroom. "I know this week's rumor is all about break ups and shit. I don't even know why rumors have themes but it is what it is, I guess. But anyway, I heard from Lauren who heard from Samantha who heard from Dylan who heard from Adam that Tom was leaving you for her."
You sighed and shook your head, "Let's not talk about it, okay? But I'm expecting that he'll break up with me soon. I mean, I won't be surprised because the rumors of our break up are beginning to come true."
"Just know that no matter what happens, I'm here for you." Harrison smiled as both of you took your seat. You looked at him and smiled as you took his hand in yours and squeezed it. It was your way of saying thank you.
This week's glee club assignment was to sing an Adele song and you loved it. You loved Adele. Her songs held so much angst and you live for it. Sometimes, you thought that Adele was taking over your life because some of her songs matched every situation in your life.
Out of all of Adele's songs, you didn't know what to sing. Thankfully, Tom helped you out by breaking up with you the next day over the phone.
"Tom, we had plans for New York!" You pleaded.
Tom rolled his eyes and huffed, "Those are YOUR plans! If you want to move to New York so much, then move there with your loser best friend, Harvey!"
"His name is Harrison-"
"I don't fucking care. Move there with him if you want to move there so much. I want to move to L.A. I don't fit in at New York, Y/N." Tom sighed. "We both want different things and with her, it's different in a good way. We both want the same things and I can see myself having a great future with her."
"What about me?" You asked softly.
"What about you?" Tom furrowed his eyebrows. He just wanted to end the conversation already because he was preparing to get ready for a date.
"A-At some point, " You started. "Did you ever see yourself having a great future with me?"
Tom paused for a second and thought about it. Did he? Sure, he loved you at some point and he cared about you. He didn't know when he stopped. But he knew that he still cared about you. You were his first real girlfriend.
"I, uh, honestly? Of course I did. We've been together for a year and a half and I loved you and cared about you. Please don't doubt that." Tom answered.
"Well, what does she have that I don't?" You questioned even though you wished he wouldn't answer it because it would hurt you.
"She's all the things you're not, Y/N." Tom said. "She's not too focused on her career. She's not too competitive and she doesn't sing show tunes all the fucking time."
You stayed quiet as tears streamed down your face. 'So that's what he thinks of me.' You thought to yourself.
"Look, Y/N. I'm really really sorry." Tom said through the phone as you cried your eyes out. "I loved you. I really did, but I don't love you anymore. There's someone-"
"There's someone else. I know. It's the cheer leading captain." You cried. "I get it, though. She has everything that I don't have and it makes sense how you'd go after a girl like her because both of you are perfect for each other. But just remember that there's one thing I can do that she can't."
"What's that?"
"She can't love you like I can. But you're willing to throw that away so goodbye, Thomas." You sniffed and wiped your tears away with your free hand.
"Bye, Y/N. Don't be a stra-"
You quickly hung up and cried. You hastily called Harrison and he went to your house as soon as he could with post-break up items. When he arrived, he ran straight to your room and you pulled him in for a hug.
"He's an asshole, I swear!" Harrison said as he pulled away and put the stuff he brought on your bed. You wiped your tears and looked at it, "What the hell is that?"
"It's a post-break up kit that I made." Harrison proudly said. "I know it's a little big than a usual kit but I don't know what else to call it. Inside, there's a bottle of wine, some popcorn, chips and a ton of flyers from different pizza places all stapled together for when you want to buy some pizza."
"That's so thoughtful of you." You chuckled. "What made you do this?"
"Well, my sister had her first ever heartbreak a few months back and as her older brother, it's my job to make sure she gets treated the way men should treat her. Then my cousin got heartbroken and I gave her a post-break up kit too. She told me it works." Harrison smiled. "You're my third customer, y'know. I refuse to let my favorite girl get heartbroken over some guy."
"Hey, he's not just some guy." You argued as you peeked inside the post-break up kit.
"Fine. He's not." Harrison said as he got the stapled flyers from the kit. "He may not be just some guy for you, but you're just some girl for him. I don't want my best friend to be just some girl. In fact, I don't want the girls in my life; my mum, my sister, my cousin, my niece when she grows up or who else, become just 'some girl' to some guy who can't appreciate what they have. All of you are special and you all deserve to feel special because all of you are amazing." He looked at you as you sat down on your bed. He sat next to you.
"I'm sorry if it sounded harsh, but you deserve the truth and the truth always hurts. I'm just keeping it real with you." He added.
You sighed, "I just- I miss being his, y'know? I miss being his girl, his everything and all that."
Harrison scoffed and shook his head, "In case you didn't know, you haven't been his girl ever since he started looking at what's-her-name's way. You haven't been his girl ever since he didn't walk you home. You haven't been his girl when he didn't pick you up after glee club meetings and you haven't been his girl when when started comparing her to you."
"You deserve better than that, Y/N. I know it's not my place to say anything at all, but you should've left him when he started slipping away because that's when it usually starts." Harrison said and suddenly the wall started to look interesting to him. "They start slipping away but you stay because you believe that they'll come to their senses and come back. But they don't. Then you blame yourself for not being good enough when they leave you. It's always like that. So, if you ever feel like someone's slipping away from you, just leave and make your life easier."
"I don't know what to say except you're right." You nodded. "Also, you're so dramatic." You chuckled as you looked at each other.
Harrison playfully rolled his eyes and smiled, "That's rich coming from the person who acts like everything is an Adele song."
"Speaking of Adele, I know what to sing for the glee club assignment." You said as you took out the bottle of wine from the kit Harrison gave you.
"And what song would that be?" Harrison asked.
"Someone Like You." You said as you stood up and walked out of your room to get two glasses for your wine.
When you left, Harrison said to himself, "Huh. Queen shit right there. I love that fucking song. Now, I don't know what to fucking sing for the assignment."
You came back in the room and Harrison said, "I'll order us pizza."
"Okay. Thanks." You smiled.
When Monday came, it was hard to look at Tom because he was with that girl he left you for. Lucky for you, Harrison was there and never left your side. When the time for glee club came, you told your teacher that you were ready to sing your song.
"I heard that you settled down, that you found a girl and you're married now." You sang beautifully and everyone was in awe. Especially Harrison. It was at that moment that he knew he liked you and that he'll do anything for you.
"Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead." You ended the song and smiled as everyone clapped. You went back to your seat next to Harrison and he smiled at you.
"You were great." Harrison grinned. "I think you'll do just fine without Tom."
You smiled at him and didn't say anything. Eventually, he was right. You were able to move on from Tom after two weeks of moping around for him. You realized you didn't want to waste your time in moping around for some guy who left you for someone else. Great stars became great stars when they were single.
Rumors. Rumors spread everywhere and they spread all the time. This week's theme of rumors were about new couples. Of course, Tom and that other girl were being talked about. They were the new 'it couple'. Rumors about you and Harrison dating were being surfaced. Of course, you didn't confirm nor deny them. No one should really care whether you two were together or not.
The truth was, you only went out on a couple of dates which you both enjoyed. You and Harrison weren't official yet, though. You were taking it slow.
On the flip side, Tom was bothered that you seemed to have forgotten all about him. He thought you would beg for him and he was kind of hurt that you didn't beg for him. It hurt his ego.
So when you were alone one day, Tom approached you when he saw you putting your things in your locker. "Hey Y/N." Tom smiled at you.
You looked at him and raised an eyebrow at him. It was weird that he spoke to you at all after the break up. He was the one who broke up with you over the phone and it confused you that he was talking to you. "Um, what do you want?" You asked.
"Ouch. Is that how you talk to the love of your life?" Tom put a hand on his chest, pretending to be hurt.
You rolled your eyes and closed your locker as you clutched your book tighter, "You haven't been the love of my life for, like, two weeks now. Get over yourself, Holland. If you're to ask help in studying, I won't help you. That's what your girlfriend is for. You told me that she's all the things I'm not. So, I assume that she's smarter than me."
Tom was about to talk when Harrison interrupted and looked between you and Tom, "What's going on here?"
You've never been more relieved in your life. You smiled at Harrison and shook your head, "Nothing important."
Harrison nodded and turned to you, "C'mon! I promised I'd take you out for lunch today."
You grinned, "Oh, right!"
"You'd love the place, I swear!" He offered his hand to you and you happily grabbed it.
"Bye, Thomas." You smiled politely before Harrison dragged you out of school. You laughed causing Harrison to laugh too.
Tom watched both of you leave the school premises and frowned. You've never rejected him before. He kind of always expected you to choose him all the time above all circumstances and he was surprised that you didn't. What did Harrison have that he didn't? He knew it was kind of silly to react this way, but he wasn't used to it. Right now, he hated Harrison for changing you. He never really had a problem with Harrison before, but right now Harrison was his enemy because he stole you away from him.
Tom had been acting weird around you lately and you wanted to file a restraining order, but Harrison said it was too much. At this point, you've been going out on dates with Harrison two months now. Both of you wanted to make it official, but both of you didn't know that.
"I'm sorry I can't attend glee club today and walk you home." Harrison said guiltily. You shook your head and said, "Haz, it's alright. Your family is important and tell Charlotte I said good luck."
Harrison smiled, "I will. Don't enjoy glee club too much without me."
"Trust me when I tell you that I won't enjoy it all without you. You make my glee club experience easier and more fun." You looked at him and tucked your hair behind your ear.
Harrison laughed and shook his head, "Oh, I could just kiss you right now!"
Your jaw dropped and his eyes widened in realization. You looked at each other and he spoke up, "Uh, forget I said anything."
"Did you mean it?" You asked. Harrison sighed and nodded. You smiled and said, "Kiss me, then."
"But I thought we were taking it slow? I don't want to force you in any-"
"Shut up and kiss me, Haz! We've been going on dates for two months now. I think it's time we make it official." You chuckled. "So if you want to kiss me so bad, go ahead, Osterfield. I dare you."
“Will you be my girlfriend?”
“Fuck yeah!”
He smirked and leaned in to place a sweet kiss on your lips. You kissed back and smiled through the kiss. Both of you pulled away and blushed.
"Okay, Charlotte will kill me if I'm late to watch her performance. I'll text you, okay?" Harrison held your hand and placed a kiss on it. "See you tomorrow!"
"Okay. Tell me all about it." You grinned as you watched him leave the school. You turned around to walk to the glee club's room and bumped into Tom.
"Where's your best friend? I don't see him around." Tom said as he put his hands in his pockets.
"My BOYFRIEND just left. He had to leave to watch his sister's performance at school." You told him and went around him to leave. Tom grabbed your wrist and you sighed, "What now, Thomas? Isn't Madison going to be jealous or something? I really don't have time for drama in my life."
"Leave Harrison. I want to be with you again." Tom blurted out and you laughed, "Sure, you do. Bye now." He let go of your wrist and you walked away and went to glee club.
It's been three days since that encounter with Tom and Harrison wasn't pleased with what happened. You assured him that you wouldn't leave him for Tom no matter what happens. You and Harrison have been rehearsing non-stop for sectionals with the rest of your glee club and today's the day that you'll perform.
All of you were backstage getting ready and Tom made his way to you. He huffed and he saw you kissing Harrison so he cleared his throat causing both of you to pull away. Harrison glared at Tom, but he didn't want to start a fight. He was better than that.
Harrison pecked your lips and said, "I'll check with Mike, okay?"
You smiled and nodded. He left and you looked at Tom with your arms crossed, "What're you doing here?"
"I'm here to see you perform. It's a big crowd out there." Tom chuckled as he handed you a bouquet of flowers. "These are for you."
You took them and set it on the vanity, "Thanks. You never came to any of my performances so why are you really here?"
"I came to watch you perform. I realized that I haven't really been supportive of you when we were dating and I wanted that to change. And if you liked New York so much, I'm willing to do long distance and I could visit you whenever I can." Tom explained.
"It's too late for that, don't you think?" You laughed. "Besides, we don't match. L.A. screams your name and New York screams mine. New York also screams Harrison's name and we already agreed that we'd move there together. You have Madison now and you're the one who broke up with me, Tom. Not the other way around."
"I know, but I'm leaving her for you. I'm planning to." Tom said.
"What the hell is your goal here? You came all this way to tell me this?" You asked. You were annoyed and kind of pissed. You just wanted to perform now, but the fifteen minute intermission was taking too long to end.
He shrugged, "Well, yeah. I know that once you leave him for me, you'll be all over me and we could be happy again. Then maybe I could convince you to move to L.A. instead of New York. Broadway is dead, anyway. You could audition for tv or movie roles and-"
"No, Tom!" You hissed. "Broadway is my calling. I've been preparing my whole life for Broadway and you can't take that away from me. If you want to move to L.A., that's on you. Don't drag me into it and I won't leave him for you. If leaving your partner for someone else is your cup of tea, then leave me out of it. I can't do that to Harrison. He's amazing and we're moving to New York together and that’s final."
"Show time, everyone!" a voice called out. You looked at Tom and said, "You're welcome to stay and watch, but don't bother me and Haz anymore. You don't get to do that after you've made up your mind on leaving me for Madison."
You walked to your glee club members and put on a smile. You refuse to let Tom's presence distract you. After all, you were performing with Harrison and you were finally getting the solo you deserved. It was your time to shine indeed. Nothing can ruin it for you.
Tom left and went back to his seat. As soon as he sat down, a familiar tune started to play and your clear and beautiful voice was heard in the whole venue. Tom was glad that his seat was on the third row from the stage and he was able to watch you properly. This was his first time seeing you perform and he wanted to make the most of it.
"Times have changed and we've often rewound the clock. Since the Puritans got a shock when they landed on Plymouth Rock." You sang as you stood on the center of the stage with your other glee club members still standing on the side of the stage, waiting for their cue to enter.
"If today," Your eyes met Tom and he gave you a smile and a small thumbs up. You stayed in character, though and paid no mind to him which he didn't take personally. The rest of the club marched on stage and went to their positions.
"Any shock they should try to stem 'stead of landing on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock would land on them." You pointed at the audience with a smile.
You glanced at Harrison and you both shared a small smile before you looked back at the audience for all of you to sing, "In olden days, a glimpse of stocking was looked on as something shocking, but now, God knows... Anything goes!"
"Good authors, too, who once knew better words, now only use four letter words writing prose... Anything goes!" You sang and dance with Harrison as your partner, of course. As part of the choreography, you slightly pushed Harrison away and pointed at him, "Anything you can be, I can be greater. Sooner or later, I'm greater than you."
You stood at the side as everyone sang the "no, you're not" part while you sang the "yes, I am" part of the song. All of you danced beautifully when the instrumental part of the song came and everyone clapped and cheered. You were preparing yourself for the high note as everyone sang the ensemble part.
"I can hold any note longer than you." You sang as you walked to the center of the stage while everyone still danced behind you.
"No, you can't."
"Yes, I can. Yes, I..." You sang and held the note. You've been practicing it for weeks and you were glad that you pulled it off really well. Your voice was loud, clear, and powerful and it overpowered your fellow glee club members' voices.
You took a deep breath for the climax of the song, "Yes, I can!"
Tom was the first one to stand up and cheer as soon as the song ended. The rest of the audience followed. All of them sat down when all the girls left the stage for the boys to do their performance. You sneakily kissed Harrison on the cheek for good luck and Tom saw it and he was admittedly jealous. He couldn't believe that he thought leaving you for Madison was a good idea.
He wanted to leave then and there, but he wanted to see what you saw in Harrison that made you choose him. The music began and Tom sat comfortably on his seat.
"Boy, boy, crazy boy, Get cool, boy! Got a rocket in your pocket. Keep coolly cool, boy!" Harrison sang as he moved around on stage with the rest of the boys just standing behind him like they rehearsed.
"Don't get hot, 'Cause man, you got some high times ahead. Take it slow and Daddy-O," Harrison looked at Tom and continued, "You can live it up and die in bed!"
Tom glared at him as Harrison continued to sing and dance with the rest of the boys. "That bastard, I swear." Tom mumbled under his breath.
Harrison finished the song with a cool pose. Everyone clapped as Tom rolled his eyes. All the boys ran off the to the side of the stage.
"Good luck." Harrison whispered in your ear before you went out there. All of you girls went on stage to sing 'It's All Over' from Dream Girls. You didn't have the main solo for this one, but you still had a solo. You were singing Beyonce's lines and you were excited. Besides, this was your time to put your acting skills into use.
Mercedes, your main soloist for this song, was doing so well and you were really glad that she got the solo she deserved.
"She ain't better than anybody. She ain't nothing but common!" She sang. You got into character and walked towards her, "Now, who you callin' common you self-indulgent, self-absorbed and unprofessional?"
"You! I'm calling you, I'm calling you, the common piece is knocking off!" Mercedes sang with a raised eyebrow and walked past you. You turned around and walked after her, "Now you listen to me, Miss Blame-It-On-The-World; see I put up with you for much too long."
"I have put up with your bitchin'." You pushed her.
"I've put up with your naggin'." You pushed her again. "And all your screamin' too!"
After a few more lines, it was your solo again, "She had nothing to do with this change. It was you! It was you always thinking of you. Always thinking of you!"
When the song ended, the boys joined the rest of you as all of you formed one straight line on stage with you and Harrison in the middle which annoyed Tom so much, but he didn't react.
You and Harrison looked at each other before looking at the audience. Both of you started the song without music, "Do you hear the people sing lost in the valley of the night? It is the music of the people who are climbing to the light. For the wretched of the earth, there is a flame that never dies. Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise."
The music started and the rest joined in for the next lines. When all of you harmonized together, you could've sworn you saw someone crying on the first row.
"Tomorrow comes!" You all sang and it gave the audience goosebumps.
When your group was announced as the champion, you were really happy. Tom cheered too. He now understood why you loved glee club. He saw your passion for performing and you were right; New York was screaming your name. Broadway really was for you. He could picture you in two different places, on stage and in his arms. It was cheesy and probably corny, but it was true.
-
Today was the day you and Harrison were moving to New York and you were excited. Both of you got accepted into NYADA and you already bought an apartment together using both of your savings and with some additional help from both of your parents.
Tom knew you were leaving today that’s why he rushed to the airport to catch up with you. He looked around and saw you hugging your parents goodbye with Harrison next to you. He smiled to himself when he was able to get to you on time.
“Y/N!” Tom called out as he ran towards you.
You pulled away from your mom and furrowed your eyebrows when you saw Tom. Harrison wasn’t pleased to see him at all and you were tired of seeing Tom after he tried to get you back multiple times since sectionals.
“Tom, what’re you doing here? I’m leaving.” You frowned at him.
Harrison looked at your parents and his parents and said, “Um, let’s leave them to talk.” He gave you a small smile before walking away with your families. You sighed and crossed your arms as you stared at Tom.
“I know you’re leaving that’s why I’m here.” Tom said. “I wanted to tell you that I won’t stop until I get you back.”
“Tom, I’m with Harrison and I love him too much to leave him. We’ve already planned our future together and you’ll have that too, Tom. Just not with me.” You told him.
“Then I’ll move to New York too and- and I’ll look for jobs there and I’ll study there too. I just- I really, really want to be with you again.” Tom begged. “What do you want me to do?”
“Why are you doing this, anyway? You’ve been like this ever since Harrison and I started going out. What’s your deal?!” You said angrily. “Okay so, what if we got back together again and the same thing happens? I don’t want to go through that, Thomas.”
“It won’t happen again, I swear!”
“How do I know that? Because you said so?! Geez, how fucking assuring!” You scoffed.
“I thought I was the only one you loved. How come you love Harrison all of a sudden?” Tom said sadly.
You rubbed your face and sighed, “You’ll always have a special place in my heart, Tom Holland. Trust me. Maybe someday, we can be friends but not now; not when you’re fucking insane. You’re my first love, yes. First loves never really go away, but we do move on from them. I’d really want us to be friends, I really do. I want you and Haz to be friends too, but you’re making it difficult.”
Suddenly, it was announced that your flight was already boarding. You looked at Tom and held both of you hands, “On behalf of me and Harrison, I forgive you for all the times you tried to sabotage our relationship. If only you used all that energy in trying to be friends with me and Haz, then none of this wouldn’t happen and maybe I’d visit you in L.A.”
You pulled him in for a hug and Tom immediately hugged back tighter, “I’ll miss you, Y/N. I really will. I especially missed you when you weren’t with me.”
You lightly chuckled and pulled away, “No matter how much you claim to miss me, you can’t keep coming back to me whenever it’s convenient for you. Goodbye, Tom.”
Harrison walked towards both of you and he nodded at Tom, acknowledging his presence. You waved to your family before leaving with Harrison. Tom looked around and called out, “Hey Y/N!”
You looked at him and waited for him to say something.
“Don’t be a stranger!” Tom shouted and waved goodbye. You smiled at him and waved back. “I won’t!” You shouted back before you and Harrison boarded the plane.
“So, what did he say?” Harrison asked.
“We just said goodbye.” You responded. Harrison pursed his lips and nodded.
“Hey,” You grabbed Harrison’s hand and he looked at you. “I love you.”
He smiled, “I love you too. New York, here we come!”
You giggled as you went to your respective seats. You couldn’t wait to spend your time in New York with Harrison. Your dreams were finally coming true... with the right guy this time.

What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera
Tumblr media
“I don’t know if we’re a love story or a story about love. But I know whatever we are that it’s great because we kept jumping through the hoops in the first place.”
I didn’t think this story could possibly be cuter than I expected to be but it was. It far surpassed my expectations with it’s quirky, insecure ensemble of characters and the story was written in a way that convinced me to accept such an open ending when usually that’s my biggest pet peeve.
Overall, this story is just a fun take on a whirlwind summer romance because it pulls in all the weird, slightly crazy aspects of modern dating like missed connections and the ease of internet stalking. It was exactly what I needed as a counterbalance to the dumpster fire that is 2020 and if you’re looking for that brief escape into a wholesome, awkward romance and story about first loves and second chances and the complexity of dating and friendships than I would highly recommend!
My only semi-complaint were the issues within Arthur, Jessie, and Ethan’s friendship could’ve been fleshed out more to do justice to the time the authors took to flesh out the side characters and their relationships with the main characters. I felt like that fight didn’t balance out the fight Ben had with Dylan because it was clear how that disagreement was building over the course of the summer. Also it felt too obvious that Jessie and Ethan were secretly dating and I was confused and unsatisfied by Ethan’s explanation that he didn’t text Arthur back the whole summer simply because it felt like lying and didn’t think twice about how ignoring Arthur (especially right after he came out) would make him feel. Also the whole time it made it seem like Arthur and Jessie were slightly closer and she had no qualms texting him and lying to him all summer and let’s just say I’m not as forgiving as Arthur was.
Let me know your thoughts!
Keep reading for some fun quotes I saved!
Normally, being an intern is more boring than terrible, but today’s uniquely shitty. You know that kind of day where the printer runs out of paper, and there’s none in the supply room, so you try to steal some from the copier, but you can’t get the drawer open, and then you push some wrong button and the copier starts beeping? And you’re standing there thinking that whoever invented copy machines is this close to getting their ass kicked? By you? By a five-foot-six Jewish kid with ADHD and the rage of a tornado? That kind of day? Yeah.
I believe in love at first sight. Fate, the universe, all of it. But not how you’re thinking. I don’t mean it in the our souls were split and you’re my other half forever and ever sort of way. I just think you’re meant to meet some people. I think the universe nudges them into your path.
Ex-boyfriend. Which means Box Boy dates guys. And okay. Wow. This doesn’t happen to me. It just doesn’t. But maybe the universe works differently in New York. Box Boy dates guys. I’M A GUY.
It’s weird—now I want to prove it. I want some gay ID card to whip out like a cop badge. Or I could demonstrate in other ways. God. I would happily demonstrate.
“On the sad scale, how are you feeling today?” Dylan asks. “Opening-montage-of-Up sad? Or Nemo’s-mom-dying sad?” “Whoa, no. Definitely not opening-montage-of-Up sad. That shit was devastating. I’d guess I’m somewhere in between, like last-five-minutes-of-Toy-Story-3 sad. I just need time to bounce back.”
“Let’s talk about why you really didn’t mail the breakup box,” Dylan says, like he’s going to bill me for this conversation. “Only if you drop the therapist voice,” I say. “Maybe we can begin with why my tone bothers you. Do I remind you of an authority figure?”
I’m certain that I’m 100 percent gay because if I was even 1 percent bisexual I would be crushing hard on Samantha for looks and high energy alone. Dylan watches Samantha as if she were glowing, and I wonder when I went dim for Hudson. If I ever really glowed for him at all.
“I would love to start my own app games. I have this one idea. It’s like Frogger, but instead of heavy-traffic streets, it takes place on the sidewalks of New York. You die if you get hit with someone’s shopping cart and you lose points if you cross a tourist’s path while they’re taking photos.
Emotional blue balls. That’s what it feels like. It’s being handed everything you’ve ever longed for, only for it to slip through your fingers. And there’s no way to fix it. Nothing you can do but slink toward the kitchen counter in a full-body mope.
"You’re not being fair to yourself,” Dylan says. “Maybe not. But I’m being honest.”
It’s this strangling fear that we’ll be sitting there and we’ll run out of something to say and I’ll be able to witness the exact moment someone falls out of love with me because I don’t have enough substance to keep a conversation alive over a meal. Why would you want to talk to me for the rest of your life?
But no. Not even close. Instead, it’s me bleeding out all my neuroses, looking for answers to questions I have no right to be asking. But I don’t know how to make myself stop asking them. People like me should come with a mute button.
I have only said one word on this call—a call I made—and I’m already ready to settle into another few hours of Arthur rambling. It’s better than my favorite Lorde and Lana Del Rey songs.
“You can sing a different song next time,” I say. I like that we’ll have a next time. That even though things have gone wrong, we’ve tried to make it right. “So I was nervous to admit this at karaoke, but—” “Please don’t tell me you’re actually a bunch of rats wearing a cute boy as a disguise.” “Worse.” I take a deep, dramatic breath. “I haven’t listened to Hamilton.” He doesn’t say anything. Then the line goes dead.
I tell him how I want to write Hamilton and Harry Potter crossover fanfiction and call it The Great American Fantasy Novel and stage all those duels in the dueling club and what houses I would sort everyone in.
“All history should be taught through rap by Lin-Manuel Miranda.”
“How lucky we are to be alive right now, right?” “Oh my god, you’re speaking Hamilton—I’m just so into you. I’m helpless.” I’m so into him too.
“For the most part, I think. But every city has its assholes.” I want to hug him, but he doesn’t want to be touched right now. Like any affection is going to become a target sign on our backs. Like we’ll get punished because our hearts are different.
But it’s just like the old posts on Instagram that I can’t get myself to just delete. Like Hudson never happened. Like he’s someone to be ashamed of. And throwing away the good memories feels like a slap in the face to our history. It has nothing to do with the future.
When the song ends, I’m ready to apologize. But Arthur takes my phone and looks up a cover of “Only Us” from Dear Evan Hansen, and he comes closer to me as he sings the words “So what if it’s us, what if it’s us, and only us.” This song is so beautiful. What it feels like to be wanted by someone who sees you for who you are. How the world—the business of Times Square—can feel like it’s falling away when you’re with the right person.
But maybe this isn’t how life works. Maybe it’s all about people coming into your life for a little while and you take what they give you and use it on your next friendship or relationship. And if you’re lucky, maybe some people pop back in after you thought they were gone for good.
Maybe I’m feeling masochistic. Or maybe I’ve unlocked the secret, and this is how people focus. All you have to do is have a cute boy rip your heart out, then let your best friends stomp all over it, and if it’s still beating even a little bit, finish the job yourself. Say the worst things and yell your voice raw and destroy everything you love until, lo and behold, the monotony of work is a relief.
I don’t know how to tell Hudson that I want to throw away a box of things that used to mean everything to me. But that fucking box. I can’t keep treating it like something that belongs in a museum’s exhibit specializing in one guy’s history of breaking hearts.
“Do not ask any what-if questions about you and Hudson dating again. That would probably end in literal heartbreak at the hands of someone pretty familiar with the law because of his summer internship but too reckless to care.”
It’s hard to be a fully functioning Arthur when your heart lives in four envelopes.
I can’t lose you forever. You can’t be someone I just knew for one summer. I have to know you every summer.

Eddie + drunk and jealous
A/N: Think of this as a part 2 to last weeks drabble. Hope you guys like it!
Eddie Valetik was reeling. After seeing her drive away with her new boyfriend, the typically poised private investigator had felt an immense urge to drown his sorrows. He needed to forget her name, her face, her laugh. He needed to erase her existence from his mind. So he drove to the other side of town and found a familiar bar. It was the place he used to go to when he was still on the force. Maybe pretending that his former life still existed would help him believe that this was all a horrible dream.
Eddie pulled out a stool and sat down. He shoved his hand into the pocket of his denim jacket and took out his cellphone. He wasn’t one for social media. If anything, it kind of annoyed him. The idea had been Sam’s. She’d convinced him to create an instagram account for their firm. It was one of the many things he’d acquiesced to. She knew how to get him to break character. It was almost like she was standing beside him, telling him to press down on the multi-colored app. Running his finger down the screen his eyes were met with a stream of pictures. Each one was of Samantha. She was smiling, laughing and beaming. Her lips were pressed against James’ cheek and her arms were wrapped tightly around his neck.
Shaking his head in frustration, Eddie slid the phone across the bar and motioned for the bartender to come over. “I’m going to need four shots of tequila.”
The night had been rather underwhelming. After seeing Eddie’s demeanor toward her upon James’s arrival, she’d been unable to have a good time. Her every thought drifted back to the private investigator. It was hard for her to enjoy the gorgeous meal or focus on the words uttered by her date.
She was glad to be home. Washing away the make up made her feel a million pounds lighter. Looking at the reflection in the mirror, she recognized the girl looking back at her for the first time that night. Whenever she was in James’s presence she felt the need to prove that she was a “cool girl”. The hair was textbook bedhead. Which meant that she spent hours with a curling iron creating disheveled curls. Her makeup conveyed the message of badass. Across her lips was a deep burgundy hue, false lashes bounced across her upper lash line, and the obscene amount of highlight across her cheeks could be seen from other space. It was all too much. Too much effort, too much styling, too much work.
The moment she’d stepped foot within her home, she finally felt like herself. It was like she’d been acting the entire night. Pretending to be in love with the evening when she was actually soaked in discomfort. Being effortless required the most effort ever. Clicking the bathroom lights off she looked over at her bed. The desire to run across the wooden floor and plunge into the crisp white sheets trickled down her body. “Finally, time for bed!” Sam pulled her tresses into a messy bun and darted across the room. As soon as the sheets hugged her curves Sam released a soft laugh, but the enjoyment was short lived. A loud knocking on the front door forced the actress to leave the comfort of her bedding.
“Seriously?” Sam rolled off of the bed and grabbed her phone from the nightstand. Pressing down on the screen she was confronted with the realization that it was two in the morning. A loud groan escaped from her lips as she stomped to the front door. This better be good!
The pounding continued, echoing the sound of Sam’s feet against the floor. “I’m coming!” Sam wrapped her fingers around the metal knob and swung the door open. “Do you have any idea what time it is?” As soon as she spoke the words she realized that no, the man did not have any concept of what time it was. “Eddie, what are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be at the office with Monica and Berto?”
Eddie’s gaze was soft and dazed. His demeanor was far different than usual. It didn’t take long for Sam to put two and two together. The man’s expression and body language seemed eerily familiar. It was the same way Sam used to carry herself after a long night at the bar. “Are you drunk?” He didn’t respond, his fingers gripped the doorframe to steady himself. “You’re drunk.” Sam took a few steps closer to her partner and was immediately hit with the aroma of cheap liquor. “Yeah, you’re definitely drunk.”
What the hell happened? Does it have to to with the case? Sam had never seen Eddie drunk. He was always extremely careful around the former alcoholic. In the office, all alcohol had been promptly removed and replaced with ginger ale and La Croix. “Come on, you need to sit down.” She waved him inside and guided him toward her grey sofa. The intoxicated male immediately plopped down and placed his face against his hands. Sam sat beside him and tried desperately not to inhale. Something was bothering Eddie and she wanted to be there for him, but every breathe she took reminded her how much she missed drinking. “If you need to throw up the bathroom is just down the hall.” She rubbed his back in circular motions and craned her head down to see his facial expression, “What’s wrong? Talk to me.”
“Nothing is wrong.” His words were insistent and followed by a sad frown.
“I’ve never seen you like this. Something has to be wrong.” She reached out and ran her fingers through his disheveled tresses. “You know you can trust me.”
Eddie finally looked up at her. HIs eyes assessed every inch of her delicate face, “Can I?”
The bitterness behind his words made Sam flinch. She opened her mouth to speak but no words came out. All she could do was tuck a strand of hair behind her ear while attempting to catch her breath. Sam’s eyes moved side to side repeatedly, searching her mind for what she did wrong. “Yes. Always. ” The words were soft, barely a whisper.
The private investigator shook his head repeatedly and stood from the couch. He’d been in Sam’s home enough times to stride around the residence with familiarity. Eddie made his way to the kitchen and filled a glass with water. “I like being around you Sam, but you make it so hard.”
His back was turned making it hard for Sam to make out what he’d said. She swore it was something alone the lines of: You make things so hard. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about James. I just wasn’t sure it was a real thing yet.” She assumed he was upset about the lie she’d told. How could he trust her when she’d lied to him?
“He’s your boyfriend Sam! That’s about as real as it gets!” There was the fear again. The same one that had driven him halfway across town to drink away the pain. He could feel himself retreating to the dark place of his mind that told him that he didn’t deserve Samantha Swift.
“I—” Sam didn’t know what to say. There’s nothing she could say.
“How am I supposed to trust you when you keep things from me? I don’t keep anything from you! You’re my partner, my best friend!” He scoffs at the stupidity of his comment. Best friend. She was his best friend and yet all she did was rip his heart out. “I am always here for you! I always keep you safe. I always help you solve your problems. I has Chris call in a favor from her ex-boyfriend just so you wouldn’t have to spend a night in a jail cell! I do everything for you Samantha! But it’s so hard for you to see it — for you to get it!” Eddie shook his head in frustration and gripped the edge of the marble island. “I love you…” He refused to meet her eyes, knowing well that she would immediately close the distance between them. “And you parade your new boyfriend infant of me like it’s nothing! You didn’t even have the decency to tell me before hand.”
There was so much to unpack there. Sam wasn’t sure whether to be upset, hurt, or angry. He loves me. That was all she could focus on. “I’m sorry.” Her fingers slid slowly toward his hand. She placed her left hand softly above his right and simply left it there. Any sudden movement was sure to spook the drunken man, much like a bear out in the wild. “I didn’t parade him in front of you. I didn’t want anyone to meet him yet—“ Eddie’s eyes were pinned on her hand but he made no move to slip away from her touch. “To be honest, the entire time I was at dinner all I did was think about you. All I ever do is think of you.” The actress had to force herself not to close the distance between them out of fear that she might do something stupid like kiss him. It was scary, how badly she wanted to do that. It was an urge that never seemed to invade her when she was with her boyfriend.
The room was completely silent for several minutes. Neither of them moved. Neither of them spoke. They just stood there in comfortable silence with each other.
“I love you too Eddie.” The left corner of her lip tugged upward in a sad smile.
Her confession caused Eddie to scoff, “You have some way of showing it.”
“You’re right. I should have stayed with you instead of going to dinner with James, but I had no idea you liked me. You never said anything.”
“I didn’t need to say it…” Maybe Chris was right. Maybe they were both so shortsighted to see how much they meant to each-other. They were oblivious to the truth when they were the ones involved. “I showed you how I felt every day.”
Sam nodded in acknowledgment. Maybe there were hints along the way to suggest how she felt for her, but Sam had never been good at reading signs. If anything she always read too much into things, when there was nothing there for her to read. “I’m sorry.” Sam took his hand and pulled him toward her. He was inches away and yet it still wasn't close enough. Turning her back to the kitchen island she put both arms beside her waist and hopped onto the counter. Her short legs dangled in the air. Extending her hand out toward him she pulled the private investigator until he was positioned between her thighs. “I love you, not James, not Dylan. You.” Her hand found it’s way to his neck and her fingers were coiled softly around his nape.
Eddie grabbed her hand and placed a kiss on her open palm. “I love you too.” His right hand gripped Sam’s waist and tugged the actress closer.
“We should probably get some sleep.” The lack of space between them made the actress feel breathless. He was drunk, it was best if they just retreated to separate corners of the house before they engaged in something stupid. “Will you be alright out here?”
“Yeah.” The last few inches of space evaporated into the air as Eddie rested his forehead against Sam’s. “I’ll be fine. Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.” Sam couldn’t completely fight the urge to kiss him. She sunk her fingers into Eddie’s tousled tresses and pulled him closer as her lips pressed onto his. “Good night.”
Eddie refused to end the connection so quickly. She was like a drug he had no idea he needed. Placing a hand against her cheek he pulled the actress into another kiss. “Good night Sam.”
Neither of them wanted to pull away. It had taken too much to get them here. It felt like a hard won fight and both of them just want to bask in the victory
Sam decided to listen to her better judgement. Well, she’s the only one in the kitchen who had any judgement. “I’ll see you in the morning.” Letting out a sigh she slid off the edge of the counter and retreated back to her room. During the climb up the stairs she tried to keep herself from giggling. What just happened? A million butterflies were fluttering in her stomach. It was true that she was head over heels for her partner, but she never imagined actually acting on her urges. Now that their truth was out in the open where did that leave them? Where would they go from here?

2017
2017. Wow. What a year. Where do i even start... Was filled with so many lessons and emotions. Finally dated Kareny and i ended up being dissapointed but it was fun while it lasted. Kind of led Samantha on, I'll make up for it. I seemed so focused on interpersonal relationships and seemed like thats all i kept myself surronded by, giving my energy and picking others up. This year didn't really didn't have its affect on me until I met Dylan. Dylan was the epitome of the girl of my dreams in the flesh. She shed a new light on enlightment and connections i have only seen in movies, something i didn't know existed. She's an amazing girl. She showed me that relationships aren'y about putting one another on a pedestal but seeing each other as equals. Dylan began to show me how much patience is needed in a relationship. I failed to recognize that her and I were in completely different spaces. 2017 defintely tested my patience and showed me i barely had any. I got myself so caught up in the physical connection that a bruised any chances of further connecting with her on other levels. If she hadn't broken up with me, I would have failed to recognize such lesson. I pretty sure that i was in love with her. If i was more understanding than abrasive i probably could still be friends with her at least but i messed that up. Then i lost my powerhouse, the very being that kept my life well knit...my grandmother. I miss her just as much as she said i would. I'm glad i got to be sweet with her and joke with her before her passing because God knows how many arguements we've been in. I remember the last kiss i gave her so vividly. I remember her last smile, I was leaving for work and she asked me to give her a kiss and I'm so grateful to God i did. I'm blessed with that last memory of her, the way she should be remembered. I love you. Her passing has strengthened me in the weakest placest i thought never existed in the depth of my emotions...So many girls have crossed my path and i have crossed thiers. I should definitely avoid serious relationships in 2018 at least until I do some focusing on myself. Fun should just do for the the time being. Safe fun. Lee. Use every lesson you learned in 2017 as wisdom for your continued trek in life, so that the brusises and scars don't go in vain but remind you of not only the right thing but the best thing to do for YOU. Happy New Year.

Is there anything that you and your friends simply can’t agree on? Religion and politics, more than likely.
Who were your last 3 Facebook messages from and what do they say? Nick, asking how Noah was doing; Mom asking if I had heard back from Nick earlier; and Tia letting me know about Caillie’s birthday party.
Who was the last person to comment on your Facebook status? What does the comment say? I don’t remember. It’s been a while since I made a status.
Is there a song that always makes you cry whenever you hear it? I might not cry every time, but it always makes me sad and tear up.
When will you next go out drinking? Mmm, don’t know. Maybe March 14th.
What are 3 reasons you’ve smiled or laughed most recently? Noah, Noah, and Noah.
Who was your last Tumblr message from and what does it say? Nothing.
Can you remember who your closest friend was 10 years ago? Do you still speak to that person? In 2007? I was starting 7th grade... so Samantha Hunt or Samantha (Huzina) Miller. I don’t talk to them often, but if I run into them I catch up the best I can.
Think about your ex, your crush, or the person you’re currently dating. Were you attracted to that person as soon as you met them, or did the attraction develop over time? We became friends first, so it took some time to develop.
Is there anything you’ve wanted to do recently, that you haven’t been able to? Yes.
Will you be spending the night with the last person you kissed? We live together, so yes.
Where was the last place you went on holiday? To the beach in May.
Do you turn your phone off at night when you go to sleep? No, I don’t.
What are the initials of the last person that texted you? LBH.
Who was the last person to post on your Facebook wall/timeline?What does the post say? Tiff tagged me in something about Once Upon a Time.
Which do you use the most, smiley faces, kisses or hearts? Smiley faces.
Describe the last person who put their arms around you. Nick hugged me before he went to work today. He’s about 6′2″, 150 pounds, scuffy and skinny as a pole.
What’s the closest thing to you that’s red? Vanilla Coke can.
What are the 3 objects closest to you? My laptop, phone, and my drink.
Is the last person you texted older or younger than you?
Older.
Are there any conversations going on in the room right now, that you’re not involved in? Nope.
What is the sexual orientation of the last person you talked to? Straight.
Describe the last strange dream that you recall having. I don’t recall.
What is it that you want, more than anything else in the world? To have a decent home, a decent job (pay and stress-wise), and for Noah to be happy.
What’s the last thing you said to the last person you kissed? Told him Noah was sleeping well.
Have you ever kissed the last person who Facebook messaged you? Yes.
Have you ever had an ask on Tumblr that was too embarrassing for you to answer? Nope.
List the last 5 things you had to eat. 1. Oatmeal.
2. Pulled pork, baked potato, roll, and applesauce.
3. Jimmy Dean sausage/egg/cheese croissant.
4. Fruit snacks.
5. Oreo churros.
Do you like plain, milk or white chocolate best? Milk chocolate. Actually, dark chocolate is bomb.
Is your handwriting neat? Yes.
If you had to choose, which would you give up - your phone or your computer? My phone.
What’s your honest opinion of the last person you had a conversation with? I don’t know how I feel. Yes, I love him but I don’t know how long I can deal with his shit.
Would you feel okay about going to your parents for advice about sex and contraception? I’d feel really awkward talking about that.
Is there any kind of food or drink that you used to love, but now hate? I used to love buttercream icing but not anymore.
Do you have any moles, ‘beauty spots’ or birthmarks? I have moles.
Think back to four months ago. Were you single, or in a relationship? Married.
If you’re in a relationship, what is it that you love best about the person you’re with? If you’re single, are you looking for someone? I love his sense of humor.
Have you slept in a bed with the last person you kissed? Yes.
If the person you miss came into the room right now, what do you think would happen? Well, it wouldn’t be unexpected. He’s due to come home at 11.
Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever kissed someone? Nowhere weird.
Do you and your sibling(s) look alike? Only Sara and I look alike. Dylan and Megan look like each other.
Has anyone ever told you that they loved you, and you didn’t say it back? Yes.
What’s your favourite hairstyle on the opposite sex? I love long hair.
What’s the closest thing to you that has glitter on it? Nothing.
Has anyone ever played a prank on you? What happened? Not that I can think of.
Do you tend to go with your head or your heart most of the time? My emotions control me a lot, even when I can be logical and think with my head.
Do you like sweet or salty popcorn? Depends on my mood cause I like both.
What are you going to do when you’ve finished on the computer? Watch CSI.

Sam + Sarina’s first day of school
This is another short one. I’ve been enjoying writing things that are a little bit less involved. Should I keep doing shorter stuff or go back to the longer ones?
These last few months had been hard. Rehab had forced the young actress to confront her demons and take responsibility for her actions. Make amends. There weren’t many people left for her to make amends with. Forgiveness for herself and for others was a major part of recovery, but she couldn’t forgive Dylan for his selfishness and she couldn’t forgive herself for hers.
“Mama!” She was awakened abruptly by the crashing down of a small child against the King size bed. “Mama! It’s time for breakfast!”
Samantha rolled onto her side, her head propped up on her elbow. “Good morning pretty girl.” Sarina was an amalgamation of her parents. Her ash colored tresses an exact match of Dylan’s locks and those golden hues that lit up with joy every morning a copy of Samantha’s. I don’t deserve you. She didn’t. Samantha Swift didn’t deserve to have a daughter that radiated joy from every pore of her body. How did I not fuck you up?
“I want pancakes.” Sarina plopped herself down on the bed and pulled the covers up to her chin.
“Hmmm….I don’t think we have time for pancakes today.” Sam pulled her cellphone from beneath the pillow and ran her finger across the screen. 7:55 A.M. School started in 35 minutes, not nearly enough time to prepare a hearty breakfast, get dressed, pack lunch and beat traffic. “We’re going to have to settle for a bowl of cereal today.”
“How about no school today?” The girl sat up in bed, a wide smile pulling on her lips. “I can stay here with you!”
“Sorry, babe, but you have to go to school.”
“I don’t want to!” Sarina slammed her little hands down against the mattress and gave her mother a glare. “I hate school!”
Sam rolled her head onto the pillow and stared up at the ceiling for a few moments before offering her daughter a response. “I’ll pick you up early today, I promise.” Sarina’s life had been turned upside down during the last three months. She’d been swept up from a life she loved and forced to live within the confines of court ordered activities and dates. Everything was dictated by a man who wore a black gown and had unloving eyes.
“No!” Sarina hated this new life. Every week she spent her time in a different bed, a different home, with a different set of rules. Time at her father’s house involved staying up late, eating cookies from the pantry and pretending to be sick in order to not attend school. Dylan didn’t pay it much mind. He dismissed the child’s behavior and justified his carelessness by claiming that preschool wasn’t that important anyways.
“You’re going. Now get yourself dressed while I start getting your lunch ready.”
“No! No! No!”
They were at a standoff. Neither wanted to budge. So much for having a happy little girl.
Sam shook her head and pulled her daughter into a tight hug. “I want you to be the smartest girl possible. I want you to make friends and learn new things. I know you miss your old school, but I promise you’re going to love this one even more. You just need to give it a chance.” She ran her fingers through her daughters pin-straight hair. “We’ll go get ice cream after school, okay?”
Sarina shook her head, “I want to go see Monica.” She enjoyed spending time with Monica. The woman with crimped hair and bright makeup had been teaching her how to draw animals. So far, she’d mastered the art of butterflies and ladybugs. “Then, ice cream.”
“Alright. You win. We’ll go visit Monica at the office first and then we’ll go get ice cream.” Sam kissed the top of her girl’s head. “Now go get dressed.” She tickled her daughter’s tummy and the chorus of giggles warmed the actresses’ heart. “Hurry!”
Watching her daughter jump out of bed and run across the hallways left the woman feeling exhausted
