film review #4: split
split is an amazing psychological horror/thriller produced by blumhouse and universal studios - directed by m. night shyamalan and starring james mcavoy (don't get me started, he was like one of my first childhood crushes when he played mr tumnus in narnia) and anya taylor-joy
this... movie...
i needed to take a breather before writing this review, the start of this movie was so good, and then it just... kept getting better how is that even possible?? this movie was
acting 11/10, 10/10 simply isn't enough... the utter talent behind being able to execute d.i.d so flawlessly is immense and the fact he didn't even win an award for his performance is annoying. he really made everything feel so real, but we can't excuse the three girls acting either- especially casey. anya taylor-joy is such an amazing young actress and i look forward to future films with her in it- not excusing how many shes been in since the 2017 film. she portrayed her character's emotions so well, i found myself sitting there, hands over mouth and stomach dropped several times
plot 10/10 gaahahhhhh gahhhhhh *chefs kiss* this film bro... i knew it was about a man with d.i.d but i never actually read the description before i watch a movie so i went in not really knowing what to expect, and it did not disappoint at all. i remember how i felt after watching fight club for the first time; there is no comparison. i feel like i really want to watch the sequel because i want to meet all the other alters but then i wonder if there is really a need for a sequel? of course it leaves off with the opportunity but I'm satisfied with how things ended, id just watch a video that's computer diaries of every alter and id be happy :)
cinematography 10/10 i mustve been on the edge of my seat 100 times throughout the course of the movie... it was just so expertly filmed, sometimes you watch a piece of media and you're like, well yeah, the plot and acting is good but it really isn't shot well - this, was perfect. I'm actually at a loss of words to describe how much the cinematography enhanced the experience of the movie: mike gioulakis was the cinematographer for this movie, and also the sequel, unlike twilight where every movie was somebody different - this intrigues me to watch the second and other films this person worked on!
everything in this film shocked me, one moment id be sitting casually, then next curled up in a ball, hands cupped over my mouth, unable to breathe. but i also like how some alters, while they're villainised you are able to relate to them in some aspects- for an example, i'd be freaking out, then smiling at hedwig (the 9 year old alter) or empathising with kevin.
this movie was amazing, i loved it, and its seriously an 11/10 movie, everyone who worked on this movie deserves an award. I would have to say this may be one of my favourite movies of all time at the moment. i remember again when i watched seven for the first time and how it impacted me, this was better than seven, than fight club, better than la la land.

The Barbie movie really said. Yes you will grow up and childhood wonder will vanish. Yes you will grow up and learn to hate yourself, your body, your awkwardness. Yes you will grow up and lose your confidence and certainty and sense of purpose. Yes you will grow up and the world will seem a bleaker, lonelier place every day, and society will seem bleaker and lonelier every day, and you won’t understand what went wrong in the span of just a few years, what took you from a happy and secure young girl to a sad, uncertain, scared grown woman.
And yet. You will learn to find beauty again. You will find joy in not having a purpose, in building a purpose for yourself. You will find beauty in connection, with the people and the world around you. You will learn to love signs of ageing as proof of a life well lived, of experience and happiness. You will take that little girl by the hand and tell her “I know, this isn’t what you thought it would be, but it’s real. Let me show you how beautiful it can be.”

there should be an oscar category called “movie my dad completed without falling asleep on the couch” and it’s more prestigious and contentious than best picture

for me at least, theres always been a really stark divide in the 'child character is the main antagonist' sort of stories.
on one hand. theres stories that rely on the shock factor of a child being evil, because we're supposed to believe that kids arent capable of that sort of thing. i guess its supposed to be frightening but the novelty always wears off really quickly for me.
i think 'a child is the villain' always lands most successfully for me when a kid is given power beyond their years (either by adults around them or otherwise supernatural/societal forces) and then everyone is floored when they arent exactly responsible with that power. and sometimes theyre even selfish! not because that kid is evil, but because theyre a kid.. acting like a kid would in their situation.
it means that any sort of story that follows requires a protagonist to reason with someone who may not even understand the harm theyre doing, or worse - not have the life lived to understand why they should care in the first place. and also, i think watching what happens when u have an destructive force seeking comforts that any child deserves doing whatever they can to have those things is (to me) much more interesting than 'child who is fucked up and evil for no reason but being born that way actually'

As someone who grew up in a household where men were never allowed to show affection, let alone to another man, from fear of being seen as weak.............

These forehead touches between friends/bros are so healing to me. Please, we need more of this. Platonic affection between men is beautiful, and I wish I had grown up with it.

Floor and Teefs were begging Rocket to leave. But, he was too distraught and consumed by grief over Lylla to listen. Floor and Teefs died because of that. And that’s something Rocket has blamed himself over for a very long time.
