stop people were passing out thats so bad of the school to not take into account 💀💀 idk how my grad went but i think it was pretty ok organization wise i didnt hear my friends complain and we had an indoor venue so fortunately no one was passing out. but thank you! im going to a park today to take photos with my grad cap and gown so i can salvage at least a fraction of the experience

i ran a dance club ! granted we couldnt properly run for most of my time at the school but i started the club with a friend in my sophomore year and when we got back we had a surprising success so even tho we only got to run the ckub with a full team in my last year now im not worried abt the club dying after i graduate 🤧

HAHA NO DW I GET YOU hoseok and yoongi are my biases even now 🫂 i get random bts reels on my feed nowadays and seeing content from them is such like seeing an old friend type of feeling (as well as exo reels akskdjf)

but omg yeaaa i wish there was more buildup for the chorus. i also just realized they didnt have a bridge for pass the mic either so it also feels quite abrupt when it ends with the post-chorus verse. the choreo is so cool though omg i love it so much maybe i'll get around liking the tt bc im always watching the choreo. i hope we get a full version of foreshadow without all the naration it has sm potential

Hi! From what I can tell, the issue with opening links in posts seems to be an android issue. (If you don’t have an android, please send another ask or a dm-I tested the link on my iPhone and had a friend test it on an android, but that’s a pretty small data set!) I can’t find any solutions to this issue online, so if anyone knows a way for me to link to posts in the android app, please let me know. In the meantime, you may just have to open the library on a browser.

VALERIE III

People in Twitter are twitting about a video of Val’s reaction when she saw Shawn and Camila, she received mixed comments about her reaction.

Her parents are really protective about her, even her siblings mostly Vernon. Her Dad and Mom doesn’t understand what’s happening between them, they all thought that Shawn is gonna be Valerie’s forever.

Of course Shawn saw the video. He’s not stupid, he knows that he’s hurting Val.

He also saw the message Valerie send him but he didn’t read the it because he knows he cannot stop himself on answering back.

He loves Valerie so much, but he has to do this.

When he first play the video the first came to his mind is that Valerie looks so pretty, very pretty. Valerie isn’t really like those blonde, long legged, orange tan (well she is tan but not oramge tan). She looks like a goddess. She’s perfect.

Then he saw Vernon from the background, Shawn gets along well with Valerie’s family well but Vernon is the hardest one to get along. He is scared genuinely of Vernon.

The time when Brian told him that Valerie broke up with him, he excused himself on sound check saying he wasn’t feeling well. He went back to his hotel and cried holding Valerie sweater in his chest.

He cried for the half of the day. He only went out when it’s Q&A.

He really wants to fix this but he can’t, it’s too fucked up to be fixed. He feels so powerless.

Valerie feels awful when she got back home.

She didn’t ate dinner instead she spend her whole evening, well half of it, on the gym boxing with Vernon is a good exercise but she did her exercises alone, she did it without a trainer while Vernon does cardio. Actually she didn’t even do her exercises, she just keeps punching the punching bag until her knuckles bleed, until they severely bleed. Her mom has to take her to the nearest clinic to aid her bloody knuckles.

“Val, you’re knuckles are going to bleed if you keep doing this. Stop it you’re hurting yourself.” Vernon tried reasoning with Valerie, growing more and more concerned about her and her new obsession with puching the punching bag carelessly.

“No, it’s either I ruined this punching bag or I do more stupider sh!t than this.” Valerie’s voice is quiet and cold, She always had a my-voice-is-so-soft-and-I-will-not-raise-my-voice-on-anyone-bc-that’s-rude-attitude.

“Can you at least where gloves, hand wrap is not enough you know.” Vernon reminder her.

Valerie didn’t listen and brought her fists close to her face, finding her aim and released all of her pent up anger, frustrations and pain out through quick, sharp punches, showing no mercy on the already worn punching bag wanting to release all the pain she felt in the past few weeks. Sweat glistened every inch of her body, especially in her face.

Vernon can’t even distinguish if that even is sweat or tears, her curly hair sticking to her back, arms and all angles of her face.

Val could her Vernon stopping her in the background but she didn’t listen.

Soon the punching bag falls from where it’s hanging. And Valerie knuckles are bleeding.

“Dammit Valerie! You’re bleeding! Mom!” Vernon shouts.

Ever since Val and Shawn broke up Vernon is more over-protective of Val.

She really wants to go back to Toronto, but Toronto has too much memories for her to handle. She wishes that Bella and Gigi are here with her. She’s lucky enough to have a thought, loving and caring Anwar Hadid by her side.

Gigi, Bella and Anwar (even though they live near), Aaliyah, Ana, Lauren and Dylan (her friends back home), Kiera and Darius (her dorm mates) are texting her everyday saying that everything gonna be alright and Shawn’s a dick.

She can’t wait to go back to Massachusetts and receive pity looks. Insert sarcasm.

She just needs to wait few more days until they are schedule free.

Valerie hadn’t spoken to anyone since they came back from downtown Los Angles (besided her mom and Vernon who approach her). She is currently laying in her king sized bed.

Staring at the clock, watching it tick by. 11 o’clock in the night, she should be asleep by now but her mind is somewhere far away. Far away from all this drama and chaos that is currently happening in her life.

Sobbing her heart out. Puffy eyes and runny nose are they best description of Valerie right now. Maybe a fever in the morning too.

She never wanted to end their relationship like this. To be honest they can survive this relationship, Valerie is just tired of being treated like this.

Don’t get me wrong, Shawn’s a great boyfriend but he focuses on his career more than their relationship.

People though they are perfect for each other. She thought that Shawn will be THE ONE. Her grandparents from her mother and father’s side already met and approve of Shawn even the ones who live in Florence.

She genuinely believe that they are ment to be together but jealousy got her. Her insecurities got her.

Her heart still aches profoundly with pain. She miss her so much but it’s so unfair that he moved in that quickly.

Valerie, Shawn and Camila are trending right now. Everything seems so chaotic. Her sobs still fills her big room.

Instagram stans are making up the craziest sh!ts right, some makes her laugh and some are true that makes her cry hard.

Shawn’s fans been calling him out because of his stupid moves. Many of her fans are still supporting Valerie even if they are not together anymore.

Valerie shakily reaches for her phone she usually listens to His music when she’s sad, but at this state listening to His music will make her more sad than ever.

Malibu Nights by LANY played. Is it ironic that she is listening to Malibu Nights heartbroken and she really wants to go to Malibu. Its just a 40 minute car ride. She can survive right?

She brought a beach house recently somewhere in Pacific Coast Highway. She brought it the exact day Shawn left Canada to continue his tour, Valerie brought the house because when she will visit Shawn on his tour this will be their hiding place.

People say that Valerie have it all; Brains, Beauty, Wealth but everything means nothing if you aren’t happy right?

Decided to spent the rest of her days in Malibu. Valerie picked this big ass box that has been sent to her by a company. She didn’t even bother to read what company it is all she knows that is a clothing company. Few shoes, hoodies and her underwears on her bag.

She dressed herself into a pair of jeans and a shirt, hoodie on her arm incase she’ll needs it.

Everyone is asleep so this should be the perfect time to sneak out, she closed her room door quietly as she held the big box on her hands, struggling to balance it and keys and a Gucci bagpack filled with he laptop, personal needs, medicines and this tiny vape pen she got from Anwar.

Valerie isn’t the type of girl who does wild stuffs, stuff like normal teenagers do. Maybe that’s the reason why they broke up, she’s too boring for him.

Well now that they are over, Valerie wants to do the things she didn’t do when they were together. Things teenagers would do.

Now she be vaping, she wants to have tattooes too. Val got a rose tattoo behind her ear on her 19th birthday. She wants to add more.

Valerie successfully got down from the 3rd floor, her room, to the ground floor.

She wants to do things that she hasn’t done yet. She opened her parents wine cellar and pulled out a bottle of Pinot Noir with a three bottles of beer and a big bottle of her father’s whiskey.

She didn’t really want to steal this alcoholic beverage but she know that many shops out there knows her and has a high possibility that they will post pictures about her underage and buying drinks.

She puts the bottles on her bag, wanting to go to Malibu quickly, she runs towards their garage, mentally kicking herself for having a loud foot steps.

For Valerie if is she’s sad or disappointed she chooses to be alone. Being with herself alone is always the best part of her day or best time of her day.

Valerie picked the black Mercedes-Benz G wagon.

She puts her things in the passengers seat and zoomed off to Malibu.

She felt tears start to form as the now familiar burn caused her to shut

her eyes for a moment and stop at the side of the expressway she like crying. For her crying is good for her mental health because crying can help reduce pain. Oxytocin is a hormone that promotes feelings of love and Endorphins help relieve pain. These two make people feel good and may also ease both physical and emotional pain.

But sometimes crying too much can also be bad for her, too much crying can lead to depression and she doesn’t want that. All she wants is to move on and live a happy life.

But moving on takes a lot of time.

The whole drive was quiet except for the radio and her quiet sobs.

She stopped on Target along the way to pick up some food for the next few days.

Valerie pulls up on the parking lot. The Californian cold wind creeps on her arm, regretting not wearing a hood and leaving it at the car.

Valerie pulls out the vape pen as she walks along the entrance of Target, she holds it to her mouth, tasting the vanilla flavored vape before releasing it. She lets out a deep sigh with some vapor leaving along her mouth and nose she continues this few times and stopping as she enters the shop.

She just pick up fruits for breakfast, pasta, vegetables and chicken for dinner, chocolate flavored milk, a gallon of water and eggs. She likes cooking, she doesn’t buy a lot of processed foods and microwaveble foods. She payed the cashier keeps giving her looks, is it because the cashier knows her or because she is the front page of one of the magazines on the counter.

“Is this you?” the cashier ask as she types something on the computer.

“Nope.” Valerie answers back as puts the goods she brought on a biodegradable bag and puts it back to the cart.

She walk back to her car and few teenagers curiously stares at her. She struggles to put the groceries on the car because it has a big tires and obviously a tall car competed to her 5’6 self.

She finally sees her house on the view.

Her gates open, headlights giving her the view of her house as well as the Pacific Ocean. The entryway features a reclaimed European fountain and big door that open to opulent interiors.

Her house looks so homey yet loney. She is used to go on a vacation with her family or family or with Shawn.

She inserts the keys while struggling to lift her heavy backpack filled with alcoholic drinks the big box and groceries she brought are stacked upon each other.

She enters her new house, she walks on the hardwood floors pushing the box with the groceries on top, she stares at vaulted ceiling and sees a Indian stone fireplace and custom designed sitting area.

For her, a house with a fireplace and a big couch is a must.

The balcony is a sliding door that has a view of the Malibu Coast.

Valerie finally fixed her clothes on her closet, turns out the box is from Gucci. Now she has a Gucci filled closet. Yey!

Her refrigerator is filled with groceries. Yey!

It’s already 12:34 am and she is still wide awake. She sits on her couch as she finds for her cell.

She looked everywhere, her hoodie, her bag, her car, on the closet even the refrigerator.

She left it on Bel Air. Yey!

She doesn’t have anything to do she she just drinks the alcohol she brought lol! Her TV still doesn’t have any channels and her house doesn’t have a wifi.

Valerie drinks the vodka shot in one gulp, ignoring the burning sensation in her throat caused by the strong liquor.

“I love you so much why did you do this to me!” she gulped the vodka down.

“I wish I didn’t love you! But I did I’m so stupid!” she gulped the other one.

“I don’t wanna date anyone anymore!” and another one.

Despite this, Valerie’s body feels more relaxed and her mind feels lighter and more problem free. It took her couple vodka shots for achieve this but it was worth it.

The bottle is nearly empty so she just decided to drink the bottle.

It’s a quarter past midnight. The buzz has worn off, now she is just dead ass drunk.

She miraculously arrived at her room, passing the stairs and remembering her room is a miracle.

As much as she wanted to sleep she washes her face and brushed her teeth and changes in a bougee Gucci pajama and sleep on her big bed with the view of the sea like a baby.

Alcohol can really make you forget everything temporarily even pain.

perhaps two daez ago, i gotz onion rings & was forced 2 get chicken nuggets as protein but i only ate the onion rings, felt rlly icky after....

I chew gum, drink sm water my stomach starts to hurt, go on my phone, and if i do end up giving in i'll def panic and purge after, but sometimes i'll take some if i have 2 and just go throw it away somewhere, gives me a sense of self control and makes me feel nice

obviously, as i said in one of da other days, i already have a slight gap as long as im sitting with my knees slightly bent, and it motivates me sm, but i want it so when i stand up itz there, it'd be so nice, my thighs wouldn't chaf, and tights wouldn't stretch so you can actually c the pattern!!

Backstory of how I got into kpop: It all started back in summer of 2016 when I was messing around on YouTube and stumbled on EXO’s Monster mv (it was like a week after it had released) and I remember thinking “this is creepy but the blonde guy is hot the dance is amazing and these vocals are insane”. Fast-forward a year and I had completely forgotten about this, but I was having a really bad day earlier in summer 2017 and I texted a friend of mine and asked her to recommend me some music to cheer me up. She isn’t a big kpop fan but listens to EXO now and then, so she was like “you like different languages and dance and beautiful voices, so listen to this album that came out this morning the boys have good voices and are all really great people”. I listened to it straight through and was Shook ™ and then literally did not leave my house for like 4 days straight while I watched every exo MV in existence and spent so much time learning their names (I remember when I found out that they had names other than their stage names and thinking I’d never remember them all lol). I distinctly remember watching Monster again the second time with knowledge of who I was watching and being sooooo amazed and getting filled with this intense and beautiful deja vu- the beat drop at the refrain came and that was the moment I was like “these boys are gonna change my life”. And then right after that I sobbed while watching Miracles in December and I realized that I had been blessed- very blessed- to find these boys and their healing words. I don’t regret this or the family I’ve found thanks to EXO:)

Banana Leaf Offers Southeast Asian Favorites for Dine-In and Takeout

It’s good to hear that some restaurants have already opened their branches for dine-in customers while applying the necessary health standards and seating limitations. Despite this, most of us will probably still prefer to dine in the safety of our homes. That is why takeout services will continue to be the usual options for me, especially since Banana Leaf Philippines has already opened most of its branches in Metro Manila for dine-in and takeout.

Banana Leaf Philippines is my go-to restaurant whenever I am craving for some of my Southeast Asian favorites like curries, laksa, cereal prawns, char kway teow, and more. This well-loved restaurant has been serving its specialties to hungry foodies for the past 19 years. They brought the authentic delights of modern Malaysian, Singaporean, Thai, Indian, Vietnamese and Indonesian cuisine to the Philippines in 2001 at very affordable prices. I found out that their SM North EDSA branch had finally reopened a few weeks ago so I decided to order some dishes for takeout.

A lot of their branches have already opened including those in SM Aura, Bonifacio High Street, Greenbelt 3, Rockwell, and more. These are also now open for dine-in guests but with the usual physical distancing rules. I was still hesitant to go for my first dine-in experience during the lockdown so I just had my orders for takeout.

They have a limited Delivery and Takeout Menu during this quarantine period so not all items previously offered are available as of the moment. You can also order from them using food delivery apps like Foodpanda and Grabfood.

Thankfully, most of my top picks are still on the menu, like the Penang Char Kway Teow (P238) which is one of my favorite dishes to eat in Singapore and Malaysia. It’s very hard to find authentic Char Kway Teow here in Manila but Banana Leaf is always dependable when it comes to these Southeast Asian dishes.

The Nasi Goreng (P238) is a great rice dish that can be a complete meal by itself. This smoky Indonesian fried rice comes filled with meat and vegetables.

But I also suggest to have some plain rice available for their curries. The Malayan Beef Curry with Potatoes (P368) is a deeply aromatic yellow curry with rich and thick savory sauce. The beef is so tender with just a little bit of heat. You will really want to douse some more curry sauce on your rice.

Another rich saucy dish is the Malayan Chicken Curry with Potatoes (P328) which has a lighter but just as flavorful sauce. This is another classic Southeast Asian recipe that will make you go for another round of rice.

My favorite dish at Banana Leaf Philippines is their Stir Fried Oat Prawns in Singaporean Style (P588). These cereal prawns come with a very crunchy coating over the delectable deep-fried prawns. This is a popular dish from Singapore which is so good you can eat the entire prawns from head to tail, skin and all.

The Tilapia Fillet with Assam Sambal Sauce (P388) is another seafood specialty at Banana Leaf Philippines. The crispy fried tilapia is cooked in Malaysian sambal sauce which gives it a sweet and savoury taste.

You can’t go wrong with ordering the Beef Rendang (P328). This spicy, rich, and creamy dish originated from Indonesia but has since been adopted all across Southeast Asia. The tender cuts of beef are so flavorful and the thick sauce really goes well with rice.

With more and more restaurants beginning to open around the Metro, we are beginning to see how the new normal environment will look like in the coming year or so. It’s comforting to know that most of my favorite restaurants are still operating despite the tough setting, so I’m happy to be able to support these brands and establishments as much as I can. Song of the Week

Today wasn’t hot and I LOVED IT. Summer Hate is entirely my mood.

It’s a long boy today, so a cute for your Tumblr browsing convenience.

Honorable Mentions:

First track of the day, and it’s grabbed me enough to comment on! I had heard of Sikboy before, but neither of the features on POSSE. The best part is definitely the beat, which as a piano hook would feel just as comfortable in an Evanescence track as this beat. Sadly, the last rapper up goes pretty hard on the cursing in the way that completely unacceptable, so I had to nope right out of there. The rest was solid though, and they were decent rappers.

The intro of MUSTB’s Realize is pretty cool, and definitely caught my attention. The rest of the track didn’t quite live up to it for me, though there were other elements to keep you drawn in (namely the post chorus part, and any time the rappers were doing their thing). I think the fairly for me come for the track having almost the exact same energy throughout.

Let’s break some gender stereotypes with a club bop in Move, Groove, Smooth from J Black and J Pink. The looks are amazing, the whole chorus goes in the best way, and the lead outs are just as fun. Also drag, and some killer backup dancers who are also often wearing at least somewhat gender bending stuff. I hope this gets a lot of attention, because this feels a lot more like representation than a lot of the stuff that usually gets lauded for it in Korean.

If very cutesy is your thing, TOO’s Count 1,2 fits that to a t. It is not my thing unless I really like the group, which is not a thing for me a TOO.

Rain just out here doing the most huh? Having duets with people, having a track from 2017 make a serious comeback. And whatever the hell In The Summer is. I mean, I know what it is, its a 90s Kpop throwback starring Linda G, Yoo Jaesuk, Rain and Kwanghee. But, like, why? Also, Rain does a short dance with a cane, and a whole lot of equivalent stuff that has me feeling things. Do with that what you will.

I was ready to dismiss Say Yes as another ballad from Jeong Sewoon, who has been hit or miss for me because of his slower stuff not really capturing my imagination. Luckily, Say Yes is just enough uptempo to keep my interest, while also allowing his vocal tone to shine and to be the sort of summer track I have been craving for actual months. This is the vibe I’ve been waiting for, and I’m so glad it has finally arrived.

If you missed Dreamcatcher, they are back, with another anime soundtrack that I will add to my Kpop as anime playlist, because Dreamcatcher always delivers. R.o.S.E BLUE is a bit more ballad-y than usual, making it fit the genre even better.

Guess what, Hwasa is a great ballad singer, so something a little slower like LMM works just as well with her voice as her older stuff like twit. And it is what I’ve been waiting for her to do, because frankly I want her to have a Taeyeon I moment. Based on the views, this isn’t it, but it gives me hope for a future trak that might just do it.

Speaking of I moments, while the views don’t say it, Jeong Eunji’s AWay fits into a similar space for me. It is triumphant, fun, and much more upbeat than her usual solo stuff. Also, if you didn’t already know, Jeong Eunji is easily one of the best idol vocalists active at the moment. Like she kills anything she sings, as you can tell by the lives of this song. In the same way that I’ve been waiting for Hwasa to do something a bit slower, I’ve been waiting for Eunji to do something a bit faster. And unlike LMM, AWay hits it out of the park for me. It gets half of the joint win this week. (Also this live where she straight fucks up laughing too hard and makes them start it again, legends only!)

SO, Red Flavor came out 3 years ago. And while that would normally make it very ineligible for my weekly round of releases, SM had made my DAY and done a performance of a full orchestral version of it. And done an adorable video cutting between the musicians and their notes and a kid dancing around Seoul. It is adorable and fits with the slightly different tone that the orchestral piece brings. While a lot of times pop music doesn’t sound quite right, or quite as good in a full orchestra, however in this case, there is a arranger (is that the name for someone who does arrangements? is that just a side role that composers do? it has been way too long since I was classically trained at all) who deserves a huge raise. Also, this sounds like exactly the style of song I would have loved playing in high school. It’s fun, upbeat, has weird rhythmic choices, and clapping. Y’all, clapping. Because I make my own rules, it wins too! I gave you AWay, let me have this.

My First Visit to Manila and My First Two Weeks in The Philippines

I arrived in the Philippines for my first visit to Manila just about two weeks ago after a flight from Boston to Toronto, Toronto to Seoul, and then Seoul to Manila. And all I can say is that I had no idea just how incredibly hot this country would be. Here are some of my initial thoughts on my stay.

Transportation Is Varied and Interesting

Pedicabs

To get anywhere, especially without a car as I don’t have one here, transportation can be interesting. You can take a pedicab a short distance in order to catch another form of transportation, a tricycle.

A tricycle basically allows you to ride in a sidecar alongside a motorcycle to get to your next destination.

Jeepney

This may mean taking a jeepney, a shuttle, bus, or train. What you might think will be a 20 or 30 minute trip ends up being far longer. Most trips I take anywhere result in a typical 3-hour commute.

TSG Tip: While Filipinos are polite and will queue nicely for pedicabs, tricycles, etc., this all goes out the window when grabbing the train. I have never seen full out chaos that looked like it would erupt into an NHL hockey fight mid-game. It really was scary despite the fact that there clearly was enough room for everyone to get on the train so I’m so unsure why they do that, but you should prepare for it.

Grab

Grab is the Asian Uber and it’s definitely an app that you should download and have on your phone before your first visit to the Philippines. The price is dependent on time of day, demand, number of drivers, and so on, but it’s still far less than anything I’ve ever had to pay in the US. I took one the other night for a one hour ride from Quezon City to Manila and it cost about 400 pesos or about $7.46. Insane right? Anywhere you go in Manila, there’s bound to be traffic. Now I’m used to traffic living in Boston and having traveled to large cities like New York City, London, Madrid, etc. But nothing can prepare you for the never ending cycle of traffic that exists in Manila.

Traffic exists all day and all night no matter where you need or want to go. Trying to get a shuttle or a taxi at high peak traffic times is pretty much useless. It can be frustrating but when you accept this is a way of life, then you stop fighting it. Seems as though a few years ago cars became more affordable and now everyone is driving and the highway infrastructure just can’t seem to keep up with it.

Shopping Is A Sport Here

Shopping is a big deal here in the Philippines. Filipinos may not recognize it, but there are stores, malls, vendors, markets, and pretty much shopping on every corner everywhere in Manila. Feel like grabbing a quick drink? Sure, go ahead and buy a pair of jeans, shoes, or a rug for your kitchen while you’re at it. You can’t escape the non-stop offers that are constantly in your face.

My first trip to a wet market in Manila

This is true even if you’re going to the wet market to buy fruits and veggies. Guaranteed you’ll be able to buy something out of the ordinary like clothing or electronics if you look hard enough.

I will add that Filipinos do love brand names, too. You can find most popular brands like Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Skechers, and so on just like you would in the US along with other brands maybe less popular for westerners like Anello. But people here will shop and then eat and then shop again especially at the large malls like SM Mall of Asia with its own amusement park and even the tallest Ferris wheel in the Philippines, the MOA Eye.

TSG Tip: Did I not mention the other popular Filipino past time is eating? Let’s just say that if you think you might go hungry here, give that thought a rest as you’ll be fed constantly, whether you want to or not.

Eating in Manila

I’ve been quite fortunate to enjoy more than one home cooked meal in Manila and the cooks were kind enough to make sure I got vegan food. That meant tofu, veggies, rice, and salad and the food was delicious.

Eating out can be another story. I’ve eaten at a couple of Thai restaurants, which meant I could get both tofu and veggies. But other than that, I had to suffice with some sides at restaurants I might not normally visit.

Fast Food

For example, I stopped at the national treasure of the Philippines, Jollibee, and all I could have was fries. So I chose the wasabi fries, which are fries dipped in wasabi powder. You better like wasabi if you want to eat these bad boys.

I stopped off with a friend for KFC, where shocker — they serve rice with the chicken and unlimited gravy from containers you pump yourself in the dining room. I could only find fries, but on the way out saw they had salad. Next time KFC, next time.

Although I didn’t stop here, I absolutely loved the signage for Botoy’s.

Snacks

One of my favorite on the go snacks was served by a street vendor on a bike. Yes, he had heated tofu on the back of his bike to create the one of a kind snack called taho.

Made from silken tofu, arnibal (a sweetener and flavoring), and sago pearls, which are like tapioca pearls. I paid 20 pesos or about $0.37 USD for this yummy vegan snack that you just slurp right from the cup. Not bad at all, right?

Veggie chicaron – I’m in heaven

Let me just add that sometimes I trip across things in the weirdest of places and this is definitely one of those things. Chicarones, or pork rinds, would never be something I could have. But a veggie version? I’m so into them and they come in a variety of flavors including salt and vinegar and extra spicy. I definitely need to limit my interaction with these bad boys.

Fruit is your friend here in the Philippines and I enjoy having a fruit smoothie as often as I can. I had a mango pineapple smoothie from a kiosk at the mall for all of 89 pesos or $1.66.

When I saw a Chatime store at the SM Mall of Asia, I quickly ran in to get passionfruit green tea with bubbles, less ice and 50% sugar.

TSG Tip: Keep in mind that Filipinos love sugar and I could’ve easily gone down to 25% sugar or even none as it was way sweeter than what I’m used to back in the US.

I was hot as hell going to the train the other night and opted for a pineapple juice even though the mango concoction looked good. Unfortunately, they all contained dairy so none for me.

Churches

We all know I love a good piece of architecture, especially religious ones like churches, cathedrals, synagogues, mosques, and the like. So when I heard about Baclaran Church, which enshrines the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, I knew I wanted to visit. It’s also the largest Marian church in the Philippines and since I never see my name anywhere, it was yet another reason to go.

I was surprised to see the many love locks on this pergola on the grounds of the church, but it was a nice place for couples to do a photo op.

Before entering the church you can light a candle or two with a donation.

Then you can enter the large church built in 1958 on your own and take a seat in one of the pews. On Wednesday the church is flooded with devotees who attend mass so keep that in mind when choosing a day to visit.

Final Thoughts for My First Two Weeks

I’ve touched on it lightly, but it’s hot as hell here in Manila. They don’t always have the air conditioning on and since it’s considered rainy season, they try to enjoy the cool air from the rain. As someone who always does her hair and makeup, let’s just say I’ve pretty much given up on that. My hair is a curly wreck of a mess that’s dry and frizzy and my makeup doesn’t stay on in the heat. Maybe as I adjust I’ll start doing it more often.

I fell on the sidewalk and nearly did a split within the first hour or so of being in Manila and scraped the hell out of my knee. Then I decided to kick a pedicab with that same knee. So I’m basically bruised on both legs like I’ve been doing some kind of secret underground fight club while here in Manila.

One week into being here I developed what is called “travelers diarrhea” and have been sick for days. Today is the first day that I’m eating and keeping things down. I’m convinced the Philippines is trying to kill me, but I won’t allow that to happen. I’m planning a trip to the province of Bicol for some cooler air and to explore outside the city of Manila and hoping the Philippines will cut me a break.

My First Visit to Manila and My First Two Weeks in The Philippines

Transportation Is Varied and Interesting

Pedicabs

A tricycle basically allows you to ride in a sidecar alongside a motorcycle to get to your next destination.

Jeepney

This may mean taking a jeepney, a shuttle, bus, or train. What you might think will be a 20 or 30 minute trip ends up being far longer. Most trips I take anywhere result in a typical 3-hour commute.
