if i may ask, is it difficult at all to re-edit/organize the comic pages from the webtoon format to fit the graphic novel format?
on another note, I'm so happy that your kickstarter was funded!!! I love time and time again, im so excited to see this all happen <3
I'll just turn this ask into something of a guide for the process! Because yes, it is difficult, but there are also many ways I have been preparing from the beginning for this very situation to make things easier for me!
I've worked in both print and scroll in the past, and have done this transition once before for a short story, so I already had familiarity both with my goals for print, and struggles with the transition!
Tumblr media
How I prepared from the beginning for this transition:
1: My panels are 2500 pixels wide, so they can span my page (which is 8.3x5.8 inches) at 350 DPI (which is print quality)
2: My layers are organized: Text, FX, Foreground, Characters, Background
Tumblr media
3: I draw one very large (twice as big as any panel would be, minimum) background for my major locations, as well as drawing furniture assets in isolation. This not only saves me time when making my actual episodes, but it also offers me INCREDIBLE flexibility when making this transition to print.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These 3 things let me pull the character art to the page by itself, scale it up or down to fit my panel, and then fill in the background behind the character.
So, I read the scroll version, decide how many and which panels I want on the page for the pacing (I also keep page spreads and page turns in mind while I am doing this), and then I pull those panels over from the scroll version to the page.
Tumblr media
Then, I make the panel borders/page layout that I want, fit the character art into it, paste in the backgrounds, do any art editing that I need, add FX, and then re-do the text!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sometimes I do need to draw parts that are missing (shoulders or elbows getting cut off is an extremely common one) and sometimes I need to adjust facial expressions, cut panels, or rearrange panels to make things read more clearly. Since it's my comic already, I know how to do these things while maintaining the original intent, but if I were working with someone else's comic I would need to work closely with them to know what can and can't be cut.
(original panel vs an expanded version)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another common issue is that VERY tall panels will inevitably lose a lot of information when they’re turned to pages. Identify the purpose of the panel (pacing, showing a lot of detail, etc) and then replicate that with your page layout.
examples (in order) are: scene transition, being overwhelmed, suspense, and establishing shot. All of these were a single panel in the scroll version!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another issue when converting pages is that panel order is a lot less straightforward than when starting from print format. Conversational back and forth that's fine in scroll often messes up the flow of reading in a page (characters facing out, not looking at eachother from panel to panel, etc) and so some creative solutions are necessary to keeping the reading order.
For the first page I had to delete and rearrange some panels, and in the second the dialogue bubbles guide us to read this page in a circle. (dialogue guides through a lot of my pages lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the last really common issue that pops up is that height differences can be really difficult. Usually in print this is solved with clever angles, but I’ve already drawn everything. So, I’ll either resort to vertical shaped panels, panel pop-outs, or editing a character up or down to fit into the panel.
(examples in order)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, yes, it is difficult! But I have a lot of experience with both formats, and having prepared for this from the beginning I've been able to make the transition a LOT more smoothly than I otherwise could have.
I hope this helps!
And, thank you about the kickstarter! I'm extremely excited I'll be able to print these, the proofs I've received so far look just absolutely stunning and I'm so so so excited to get to send them to people!!!
Obligatory self promo, if you want to see the kickstarter page and get these four books for yourself, then you can check it out here ^^ It's been funded, so at this point we're just reaching stretch goals and placing orders!

hi! i'm new to comics and i got in through reading your fics and wayne family adventures. i've since started reading more of the mainstream verse and i realized that most comic fans consider wfa to be totally fanon. you're one of the few i saw that disagrees. would you mind elaborating a lil on why? i'm too new to really form an opinion either way but i'd like to know your's!
(also yes i really did stalk your blog back years worth of posts i'm sorry! 😭😭)
Aw I love this! Welcome!
So I think it's really important to be clear on definitions here:
Canon means it's part of an official text. It's literally in a comic (or book or movie or other property) published or licensed by DC.
Fanon means it's made up by fans. That doesn't mean bad or good, it just means that it comes from fandom and is not part of the official text.
Wayne Family Adventures is an official licensed comic by DC, so by definition, it cannot be fanon. That doesn't mean everyone has to like it, but it's not a fan comic. It's an official DC product. It's not fanon.
Now, WFA isn't part of the main DCU canon. It takes place in a separate universe. The Jason in Batman #138 and the Jason in WFA are not the same and they are having very different experiences. (And I'm sure the Jason in WFA would be grateful if he knew.)
But that's no different than a comic that takes place in an alternate universe, like Dark Knights of Steel or DCeased, or a movie like Blue Beetle or a show like My Adventures with Superman. They all take place in their own universes, but all of those universes are canon. None of them are fanon.
What I think most people mean when they say WFA is fanon is that WFA draws on tropes and characterizations that are popular in fandom. Which...yes, absolutely. This is on purpose, and honestly, it pisses me off when people complain about it. (Not you, anon! Your question was lovely, you just triggered my unskippable cut scene of dialogue. Sorry lol.)
Wayne Family Adventures is probably the single best idea DC has had in the 20 years I've been reading comics. (The second best was the kids and YA graphic novel lines.)
I just checked, and WFA has 1.3 MILLION subscribers. That's more than every floppy comic starring Batman sells in a month, combined. It's more than literally any superhero comic has sold in decades - in this century! The combined strips have over A HUNDRED MILLION VIEWS. That is bonkerstown. That is a readership like DC hasn't seen since the 1970s. That is unparalleled success, and it's introducing characters like Kate Kane and Duke Thomas to a whole new audience.
Now, WFA was clearly designed to appeal to Batfans who were active on social media and fanfic sites like AO3 and Wattpad, and Webtoon readers. The readership of Webtoon is mostly young and female. Fandom as a whole is mostly female. The writer of WFA is female.
And maybe I'm not being fair here, but when I see people dismiss WFA as "just fanon," I always catch a whiff of "It's not a real Batman comic. It's a girl comic for girls."
I have spent the past 20 years begging DC (and Marvel, DC is not alone in this) to see women as a viable audience - as their largest potential growth audience! I have watched in dumbfounded frustration as they ignored the juggernaut success of Raina Telgemeier and Ngozi Ukazu and Alice Oseman running rings around the NY Times bestseller list and counted a 50k shipment here and there as a resounding triumph. I have literally seen them throw out survey responses from women because "those women had an agenda." (This is a true story. 2011 was rough, y'all.)
And all of a sudden, they gave us a comic actually catering to women and young people and fandom, and they put it on the most popular, current, modern platform for comics availably - and it's brilliant. It's smart and funny and stunningly drawn and every episode makes clever, inventive use of the scrolling format. They FINALLY gave us a girl comic for girls, and it's a masterpiece.
And yes, it riffs on fanon concepts. It also has its roots firmly in mainstream DCU canon. It references deep cuts. CRC Payne and StarBite know their shit. Jason Todd being a bookworm may be a fanon staple, but he does plenty of reading - including Jane Austen - in the 100% canon mainstream DCU comics.
It's not going to be for everything, because nothing is. It's completely fine if you don't like WFA. No one has to read it or enjoy it. If you're into Batman for the darkness and the crime and the ongoing plotlines and the angst, WFA won't be for you, and that's totally fine!
But to finally, finally be valued as a reader by DC, to have them do something smart and innovative and so, so well executed, and have the exact people they made it for dismiss it out of hand because Bruce has a "World's Okayest Dad" mug or whatever? Yeah, that chafes.

What is Ninja Turtles: Brotherhood?
Tumblr media
Brotherhood came into conception February 2023 when we started to see more of the Mutant Mayhem movie set to release later in August. While I don't mind the franchise skewing young--I myself first saw Ninja Turtles as a child-- I found myself wishing there was also some TMNT animated content for older fans. At the time I was watching DC animated series like Young Justice and Harley Quinn. It was nice they recognized that there were fans of all ages and they were putting out animated content for older audiences while also making content for kids. I found myself wishing that TMNT would follow that example. And then I asked myself, if I had the opportunity to make a TMNT animated series for older fans, what would it be about? At first, I had nothing and wasn't intending to explore the idea further. Then, one day, I was driving home from work and I suddenly had an idea.
For most of 2023 I explored the concept. Since animation is my background, that was the medium I had in mind when putting it together. Of course, there's no way I could animate a whole series by myself as a fan project. I first thought about maybe trying animatics, but that also seemed a bit overwhelming. For a time, I thought maybe I would let it go as it seemed too big of a project for one person. But then the 40th anniversary came around and I decided I wanted to do it for them. For a lifetime of turtles. So I decided on a web toons type format. It seemed easier as a one-person project than the typical comic book format. So here I am after a year of development, attempting my best at putting out a TMNT fan comic for the anniversary. It's meant as a love letter to both the franchise as a whole and the fans. It pulls from many different iterations while also telling its own story. As such, it's meant for not just fans of one iteration, but for fans of any of the iterations. Just Ninja Turtle fans in general. And I'm aiming to provide a full character arc for each turtle so, no matter who's your favorite, you'll get some good content.
Plot: The series takes place five years after the defeat of the Shredder. In a story meant for older fans, I decided the turtles should be older, too. No longer teenagers, they are now 25. The idea is that everything that you expect to see in a typical TMNT series has already happened to them, and now they are navigating their world and experiencing new adventures as adults, trying to find meaning after their main adversary is gone.
You can find development art I've done over the year by checking out the #ntbrotherhood tag. I post new parts every Monday. And I usually post here on Tumblr unless I feel they are too big. You can find the full comic collected on Webtoons (for as long as they'll put up with hosting a fan comic.)

Hey I just reread the comic via webtoon and it was great! The webtoon format works well, and wow you ported it over really fast! Also just wanted to say how much I love this comic. It makes me giggle, and tugs at my heartstrings and makes me go "wow cool art!" All at the same time. I know how discouraging making comics on the Internet can get, so I just want you to know that this is amazing! So thanks for such awesome art, and for such a great story

Oogjhdh thank you, this is the kind of comment that keeps an artist going 😭😭💛💛

if you have I dunno 827492734 tabs open, what is in them?
TUMBLR: large numbers of them will be the tumblr dashboard. You were probably looking at something specific. Something you wanted to look at later. Too bad. They are the tumblr dashboard now.
TWITTER: maybe you are like me and you no longer feel morally comfortable posting to twitter. But did you feel that way 827492734 tabs ago? Even 127492734 tabs ago? I didn’t think so. However, you will notice that roughly half of the specific tweets are gone for reasons best left undiscovered.
GMAIL: gmail might remember what you were doing but probably not. These are just general gmail now.
FAN FIC YOU GOT BORED READING BUT NOT SO BORED AS TO ACTUALLY CLOSE THE TAB ON: oh no
GIFT IDEAS FROM PREVIOUS HOLIDAYS: how you flailed around. HOW you flailed around, year after year, desperately looking for things for all your friends who refuse to be like “you know what I love? cozies. Just get me a doorknob cozy or like an air cozy or a cat cozy or a bed cozy or a computer cozy or something, I’ll be delighted!” Most of the things you found were too expensive or too trashy to actually give them. It’s OK, though. You tried.
REFERENCE ART: why, yes, my open tabs did go back to when I was doing art for the Nobilis 3 remake, why do you ask?
WEBTOONS YOU REALLY DO PLAN TO READ SOMEDAY: it *looks* like it would be an appealing format, the stories aren’t necessarily bad, why do all the webtoons just kind of pile up in your old tabs anyway? It’s not like you turn your nose up at comics, you know.
TREASURE MAP: yeah, yeah, whatever, ^W
THANK YOU FOR ORDERING ME: if you let the page finish loading it might even tell you what it was that you ordered and give you a useful landmark in time! ... there is probably only like a 1% chance it will reorder a whatever it was you bought then. That’s not a big chance at all!
THE HIMMA DAGA ENGLISH-GOTHIC DICTIONARY: like me I am sure that probably like 1 in 20 of your old tabs are dedicated to the Himma Daga English-Gothic dictionary because of all the times one has to look up Gothic words in everyday life. It is the constant drumbeat of my day.
A PDF THAT YOU ALREADY DOWNLOADED: I should probably turn off the option that makes these download instead of loading in my browser
REQUESTS TO LOG INTO DROPBOX: these are probably actually dropbox links but what, like, I am going to log in to things? I am Jenna Moran things should log in to ME
1976 AMC HORNET SPORTABOUT WAGON: ambient 1976 AMC Hornet Sportabout Wagons were a big problem for me at one point while browsing if you know what I mean
IMPORTANT THINGS AND SITES TO REMEMBER: you have just switched from that tab to here and you have forgotten all of them already.
LISTS OF IMPORTANT THINGS AND SITES TO REMEMBER: oh, sure, that’s so much better
DECLUTTERING ADVICE: yeah, yeah, whatever, ^W

And by next I mean specifically after this Kid Leo arc is over :) I think instead of breaking it up like I originally planned I'll do all 4 parts - including the two intermission parts- at the same time :)
And then I'll pick up on one of these AUs again for a chapter so I don't get burnt out on Kid Leo :/
For the Rural Au I'm gonna be redrawing the Webtoon but formatted for Tumblr cause the webtoon format was part of the reason I didn't like it.
Also sorry Iif this doesn't make any sense its like 5 am and somehow this is the most clear-headed I've felt in like 2 weeks sooooo that means planning time.
Also I'll answer some asks sometime later today. And I'd love to hear what everyone thinks about the new Kid Leo update <3
Anyway that's all, hope this isn't too confusing and also hopefully no one is too upset at the change in plans :) I think it will just help me stay on track/keep to my schedule if I keep posting the New Normal arc for a bit - I will probably take short breaks between with bonus comics or the competition propaganda :3

Happy webcomic day!
Finding Home is a slow-burn queer romance I’ve been updating for 6 years and ends... THIS TIME NEXT WEEK!!
---
A wandering healer's hidden magic, fae court childhood and difficult past being slowly revealed as he finds himself drawn to a human traveler...
There are fae monsters, secrets and betrayals - and it's definitely a romance - but at the heart it's also a story about recovery and being kind to yourself.
Readers describe it as ‘agonising’ slowburn, extreme pining, and gay fantasy road trip / ghibli magic emotions vibes. The main character desperately tries to keep his distance but when emotional, plants grow out of his hair based on flower meanings from around the world (yes there are a lot of metaphors about repression and queerness.)
---
You can read Finding Home for free on tapas (full pages and more extensive warnings in descriptions if you leave mature filter on) or webtoons (where most of it is adapted into mobile/ scroll format).
Or if you happen to hate big corporations and want to give me money, you can get it all as PDFs in a bundle that includes an exclusive prequel minicomic here.
I loved making this comic, I planned the ending way back in 2016 and I’m really proud to have fully completed it - I hope you enjoy it.

Tired Webcomic Creator Noises
Gags … ah yes lets make art into mindless content spat out by Ai cos we've been literally killing creators with inhumane workloads to spit out as many episodes as possible for mindless consumption.
I make my comics with passion and love of the craft! I have a degree in Comics, I spent years...years learning, practising, experimenting, adapting. I recall the days where you may get a page a week, or a few at the start of the month back in the 2000s era of self hosted webcomics and smackjeeves. (Rant below)
I've had to learn how the whole scrolling format worked to adapt to where all the readers had gone to, having been taught the traditional print page formats. And now cos its suddenly a massive money maker for these few hosts and they've pushed creators to the brink with the sheer volume they want pumped out that of course they want to use AI.
Tumblr media
But it will speed up colouring! I have multiple tools available by the software I use and made by the wonderful people who love creating that colouring isn't that much of a chore, Its my fav part honestly. And its also a job sector within comics, colourists are skilled artists and this is another way to trim the fat, to pocket more money and keep churning out the 5th millionth villainess story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes I am in most views a tiny creator, I haven't even broken their 1000 sub goal to even try applying for ad rev in the near 5 ish years on webtoon. But what I make I love, I spend hours researching folklore, scripting, drafting the whole kabudle like many other creators. And other than the kind supporters on my Patreon and Ko-fi I don't make much from the hours, days, weeks I pour into what I make. But at least I know its made with my own hands. That its made with love as corny as that sounds.
Ai is creeping its tentacles into everything, now ethically trained ai tools to help smaller creators would be fine. Most creators already rely on 3d tools to speed up things like backgrounds for webcomics. But when we don't know what its trained on, and is marketed wholesale as something anyone can use to make "content" is where it gets insidious. I am all for anyone with the desire to create and tell a story to go out there and do so, whether a beginner or a master. Part of the joy of a long running webcomic is seeing the artist grow both artistically and literary. But with ai it will be all one homogenous style, a copy of what ever is the hot thing. We already have amazon stuffed to the teeth with ai generated books, videos, merch and more all to be sold in some get rich quick manner. (need I point at the Willy's Wonderland incident). Youtube videos being spat out by faceless accounts stealing and regurgitating content at the speed no human video making team can easily match without cutting out quality or fact checking.
It is tiring. Creatives as a whole are treated poorly for decades, and now with the rapid late stage capitalism, website /social media enshitification and the blind headlong rush into the next big money making thing (watches the nft crash). I can't deny Covid sped this up, as everyone was locked inside and turned to what we creators made for comfort. But that content eating boom, lead to more demand, faster output and tighter budgets. We are seeing journalists being cut, game designers in their thousands and recently Dreamworks cutting a bunch and pushing to make their Robot film come out sooner due to public demands.
Tumblr media
Skilled creatives are being treated like disposable fast food restaurant employees. Used til they burn out, get injured and even die! And then are simply replaced.
I've never been a creator with huge ambitions to work at places like DC, Marvel or Top Cow. I simply wished to create and share stories with the world, to bring smiles, to create art that evokes emotions, inspires others to look around themselves and create too.
Art is for everyone. You just need to take that scary jump, there is a whole array of welcoming communities willing to teach and share. I wouldn't have improved so much without the kindness of the webcomic groups I've discovered and learnt from. Everyone is always learning, and there no shame in not knowing how to do a thing. Even I started with the cheesy how to draw books as a kid and made my own pokemon and digimon.
Don't let the world treat your art as content. It is "ART" as much as what's kept in the louvre is seen as art, so is that little stick man doodle on a postit.
So Try something new, try a new material, a new style.
And support the artists you enjoy, tip their Ko-Fi, pledge to their Patreon, buy a sticker or print. Share their posts and tell them what you love about what they make.
Don't let machines steal away the art in HEART.

Help Getting BL Manhwa Paljae Licensed
As per an initiative started on Reddit, I would like to ask you for help in regards to the potential licensing of the BL manhwa Paljae, Child of Winter.
Tumblr media
I'm not kidding when I say this manhwa is a treat for the eyes.
With its Korean-inspired mythology and eery fantasy elements, Paljae is a beatiful story about a blind, powerful dosa (akin to a cultivator) who saves the life of a mysterious creature close to death that seems to be weakened by high temperatures and empowered by Winter season.
This is a mesmerizing manhwa both in artstyle and content. The exploration of human emotions, the blossoming of deep-rooted love and lifelong lessons are just the tip of this phenomenal story about two messed up beings finding companionship in each other.
Tumblr media
I could sing praises about this story for hours and still it wouldn't be enough to express just how good it is. If this tiny summary has picked your interest, or if you're already acquainted with the story, please spare me five (5) more minutes!
See, as many of you know, the publishing house Seven Seas Entertainment opens a reader's survey every month to get suggestions from people about what their new licenses should be. From personal experience, I know getting a publisher's attention is hard (very much so), which means that this survey is a great opportunity to hopefully make them consider licensing this title.
As readers, we have the power to suggest what we're interested in buying, and we have to take this chance.
So without further ado, I propose we take this monthly surveys to get them to at least consider Paljae as a potential license.
Tumblr media
A user on Reddit posted how you can help us by participating in the monthly surveys with instructions to do so: https://www.reddit.com/r/Paljae_ChildofWinter/s/KamfbYGn18
If you don't want to exit Tumblr right now, keep reading for my own summary of the post.
Whether you're familiar with Seven Seas or just want to give us a hand, if you're interested in reading Paljae, are already in love with it or just want to support the author, please consider taking Seven Seas Entertainment's monthly survey.
How can I help?
1. Once you click on the link, you'll be redirected to the FREE survey.
2. You will need to give them an email. This is only so they can make sure one person doesn't fill in multiple surveys. Your email won't be shared with their associates, and you won't be sent any emails either. I've been participating with other less wholesome suggestions for months, and it's alright.
3. You will have to answer a brief multiple-choice questionnaire about the formats you prefer to read manhwas, comics and the like.
4. Frequently, there will be a compulsory question about their new releases, so you may be prompted to choose the ones that pick your interest. Their covers and names will be included in a multiple-choice format, so have fun looking at them :)
5. There will be a question about which WEBTOON/WEBCOMIC you'd like to see licensed. This is where you can type Paljae, Child of Winter.
6. Finally, if you want to participate in their monthly raffle and win a paperback they published during the year prior, just enter your email in the last section. This is voluntary and won't affect the consideration of your answers.
We Tumblerinas know that fandom makes impossible things come true, and wouldn't it be awesome if we could make this happen?
You can find the link for their monthly reader's survey in different places:
- At the end of their webpage, https://sevenseasentertainment.com/
It will look something like this:
Tumblr media
- On Instagram, in their stories: https://www.instagram.com/sevenseasentertainment?igsh=MWpsZ2xuZ2xvdG8zaA==
It will look something like this:
Tumblr media
- On Twitter/X/whatever (I know we don't talk 'bout X around here, but still), https://twitter.com/gomanga
The tweet will usually be posted the first week of every month.
- On the reddit post linked in this publication, https://www.reddit.com/r/Paljae_ChildofWinter/s/KamfbYGn18
[This user will update the link every month, so that you can access the newest version whenever you see this post.]
That being said, I am very thankful for your time and I hope you can spare a few minutes to make this a reality. Thank you very much!

Hi! I just want to say that I absolutely love your writing and your art. City of Blank is my favorite comic by all reasonable measures (not counting my special interest) and your art style is so cool and unique that it’s inspired me to learn how to use half tones and rougher lines.
Mostly the point of this ask is that I wanted to tell you that you’re not alone.
Webtoon comic sections (and webtoon readers in general) are famous for their complete and total lack of reading comprehension. Maybe it’s because of the format of short episodes every week, which leads to reading spread out over time and in tandem with literally dozens of every series.
If I’m being less generous it’s because the vast majority of people are absolute idiots who believe the first narrative they see and parrot it forever, without ever caring to check the facts or learn new ones.
This is part of why Claude supporters are so vocal compared to the rest of the fandom - most readers simply see a clingy villain who almost definitely has a personality disorder. The people who care enough to actually read the comic see him as an apathetic but deeply relatable person, who is misunderstood by the world and has seriously messed up priorities. These same people are the ones who make fan art and cosplay because they actually care about the story.
My point is, don’t judge your comic off of the comment section. If you’re feeling generous, don’t even judge your fanbase. The people who care enough to donate on patreon, make fanart, cosplay, and post about CoB. Those are the people you should listen to. Someone once said “If you wouldn’t ask them for advice, don’t listen to their criticism.” That person clearly didn’t have anxiety and they make it sound easy. It’s not. But try to judge with the people who care over the people who don’t.
And even if your comic sucks (which it doesn’t)
You are still amazing as you are.
Thank you! ;v;
Tbh one thing I need to get better at remembering is......every WT comment section is like this haha. It doesn't matter if the writer is modern Shakespeare. Nobody is spared. I should just be grateful mine is (relatively) less toxic than some. I'll take confused people missing blatant details over biggots using slurs any day (tho don't get me wrong. I unfortunately get always at least 1-2 of those any time something remotely gay happens lol. But at least it's just one here and there).
Thank you for the kind words of reassurance!

It's getting exhausting hearing about this Webtoon abuse and nonsense. I've wanted to take my comic off the platform almost ever since I started publishing it there, but I've never quite had the guts to essentially cut off any viewership I'm getting through it. It's a huge disappointment to work very hard and to still see diminishing returns-- but that is what the life of a cartoonist is, by and large, and recognizing the reality of that fact, the fact that the work itself HAS to be an end for any creator, there is no other way, is my only option.
I'm going to start rewriting Cupid Test to be in a page turn format instead of the scrolling format of many modern webcomics and publishing them page by page for free to read on my Patreon. I'll have to figure out another website to host it on as well, but I want to take my time and do my research on it.
I feel dumb. having i bought jnto the lies of the site and the instant gratification that they promise. The only way I'll feel good about my work anyway is by making it good rather than frequently, focusing on quality vs quantity. It helps a lot having met lots of amazing artists and cartoonists at cons and at my new workplace too, seeing how their relationships with their art is, and understanding my own creative abilities/ the way I live as an adult.
I'm an animator full time now, which makes trying to keep up with Webtoon weekly/biweekly update expectations with very little monetary gain absolutely unsustainable. What is sustainable, though, is dropping my current schedule and giving myself time to breathe, write, and draw work I will be proud of. I know I will lose many many readers by doing this. But I think this will make me love my work again in a way I haven't felt in a while.

I dont think ive ever talked about. Like. How cool I think zack is. Paranatural has been going on for over a decade, alwhile they’re doing other comic projects on the side, working on a visual novel(????), running a patreon, merch items, small illustrations, WHILE maintaining a (from an outside perspective) healthy and ACTIVE social life. That’s unbelievably impressive.
They still work on the project they started when they were 18. How many webcomics that started in 2010 and are still running can you name? Growing up and starting to work in the comics world- specifically, slowly being introduced to and learning how bleak the comics world can be- really exposed to me just how much this is just. A story they *want* to tell.
Art school and conventions surrounded me with amazingly creative people, but so many of them had been beaten down by nonexistent contemporary cartooning scenes, the mass-production of storytelling, hustle culture. I started hearing ‘oh, I have this project but it doesn’t get much attention so i stopped.’ ‘you’re publishing on webtoon? psh, good luck unless you’re lore olympus or mongie.’ ‘nobody likes this why am i even making it.’ etc etc.
Why do we make? Why are things worth hard work?
Zack smashed their wrist to pieces and was still determined to keep this comic alive. When the ~9-panel format wasn’t working, they fucking *restrategized* to make it work in their favor. Do I miss the comic as a comic? Yeah. I grew up with it. But I also grew up with it, and watching a master of their craft rework a project so they can keep telling it showed me the grit people can have when they’re stubborn and put their minds to it. It asked me: you want this? How bad.
Theres a lot to say about Satishi Kon and numerous others and working yourself to death, people taking advantage of that, destroying your body, thinking ‘do I want to do this project or do I want a healthy body in 30 years and a social life with people who love me’, so on. That deserve to be said and read. But isn’t this post.
It’s bewildering to me how Zack manages to just. Do BOTH. At the end of the day, they really just seem to like creating. And thats so cool. Thats so cool.

Hi! I love your reimagining of LO! I just have a random technical question about canvas size for long scroll comics. Would you recommend following the WT sizes (maxing at 800px width) for posting to tumblr? Or maybe something else entirely? Hope it's not a dumb question
Not a dumb question at all!
So the one thing I will recommend is to always draw big, export small. So whatever format you're using, whether it's Clip Studio or Photoshop, work in bigger canvas sizes with high resolutions, even if they're higher than what WT allows, because you can always resize the JPG/PNG exports for smaller sizes, but you can't make a small root file bigger for other things without losing quality.
I use the same standard size for pretty much all of my webtoon projects, with a fixed width of 2400 pixels at 350 dpi. The height doesn't matter so much as Webtoons will crop your episodes for you (or in my case on Tumblr, I just cut out the segments from my pages with the marquee tool and transfer them over into Tumblr, I try to make these segments as small as I can while minding the image limit so that Tumblr doesn't compress them to shit). Sometimes I have pages that are 20000px high, other times I have pages that are as high as 35000px, it just depends on how the sketches turn out, especially if I'm doing a set of panels that need to be interconnected.
When I finally export my pages, I usually size them down a touch so that Tumblr doesn't slap me for image sizing restrictions, I do the same thing with Time Gate on WT because they have a 20MB limit. So for Time Gate I export it to 800px width, but for Tumblr I go a little higher around 1600px. But I keep all the root files at their original sizes, this is so that if I want to post my art anywhere that doesn't have such strict image constraints, I can. It also means I can get decent quality images for print.
So really the only thing I keep consistent is the 2400px width because it's easily divisible by 800 if I need to post to WT, makes my brain happy LOL And I just sorta stuck with it for Rekindled because it works. And I always, ALWAYS keep those root files at their original sizes!
Hope that helps!!
