something abt jace's whispered little "excuse me" into baela's ear before asking helaena to dance.
like, he's absolutely extending his hand to his cousin bc helaena very publicly admitted to being neglected by her husband and jace probably remembers how sweet she's always been. yeah, of course he can do this for helaena, she deserves to feel paid attention to and she deserves to smile and laugh. and absolutely yes, jace having the compassion to do that and the awareness that both sides of the family are watching/attempting to mend their broken bonds!! jace having the mind to capitalize on that fact and cement the fostering of those good relations!! these are the merits of a good future king, very possibly a great one
but also jace having the care and courtesy to tell baela first, even tho he didn't have to, and jace bearing aegon's insults to him but breaking when aegon disrespects baela by propositioning her and jace's "mind your tongue before my betrothed" and his nod at baela during the throne room scene after their engagement was announced and baela's proud answering smile. the trust she has in him!! the confidence he inspires from her!! these are the merits of a good husband :')

One thing I hate right now is people acting as though Baela’s sexuality and the way she experiences romance in the books and show don't affect her character because she's the more masculine twin and wants to fight in the war.
Tumblr media
She is one of the most irrational lovers we meet in the books. It's a great feat because she's a woman. In the narrative, with all she goes through, she's never punished or reprimanded for it.
She's kissing boys on Driftmark and getting caught with their hands under her shirt. Even though they are both wrong for it, she convinces him to go along with it and then cries her way out of him being punished for it.
She's pushing for her and Jace to finally be married during the war. Which is not only sweet in the sense she's asking for it but political because the purpose of their union will be met, so in the event that he dies, they'd have an heir of house Velayron and Targaryen to fight behind.
Tumblr media
When the option of her marrying anyone else comes up, she says she touched on his sons,( not at the same time), runs away to her cousin, and ensures she marries who she wants against everyone's wishes.
Tumblr media
In the show, she is smiling brightly with the betrothal announcement and everything that follows the coupling after.
Tumblr media
She's a certified lover girl who shows the intricacies of her valuing love along with her political understanding, defiance to systems she doesn't care for, and then when she wants to, she has kids.
She's Daemon Never Not in a Relationship Targaryen, Laena Lover of Flying Velayron, Rhaenys Get a Match Targaryen and Corlys Secure an Heir Velayron's blood.
I need y'all to stop speaking on her when y'all don't get city girls. Real ones know she would've added Cregan to the roster if George didn't place so much importance on Targ/Stark unions.
Lover Girls up
City Girls up
Stop playing on her name. Stop playing in her face.

"GRRM said Nettles is Karma and Redemption to Daemon. She frees him from his obsession with his blood cause she debunks his beliefs."
Wtf?! When did George say that?! Never to my knowledge. And stop with this delirium of blood obsession from Daemon! It comes out of nowhere! He was never obsessed with it! He was going to recognize his child with Mysaria! The simple fact that he had a long-lasting relationship with Mysaria proves it! He accepted the children of Rhaenyra who are not pure Targaryen! He avenged Lucerys' death himself twice! He was never a blood purist! NETTLES NEVER RELEASED HIM FROM THAT! I've had it up to here !
This is the first time I ever heard anyone claim GRRM say this.
However, I will say that Daemon absolutely would have had pride in his Targ/dragonrider/aristocratic/royal "blood". It's part of the reason why he doesn't want Rhea Royce and was fine with marrying Laena. And him in HotD, him saying to Viserys that he wishes to bring the house to its former glory by marrying Rhaenyra? Rhaenyra is also very much a Targaryen/Targ princess with the fire of the ideal Targ/dragonrider. That's a big reason why Daemon is attracted to her and vice versa. And yes, most of the Targs before Daenerys have the similar blood purist ideologies (or developed mindsets much more inspired by such after the Targs assimilated into Andal culture) as other Andal/FM descent lords. Rhaenyra is not an exception (Twitter), and since I already told how Daemon figures into that, Daemon also has his own purist notions.
You are also correct in that Daemon was very much willing to take Mysaria's child as his own. Though Mysaria was from Lys (a Valyrian settlement-turned-Free City), their child was going to be a bastard. Concerning his stepsons, they are Rhaenyra's sons and all proved to be dragonriders -- that would have helped Daemon accept and then love them until it was only love.
So I still wouldn't call Daemon's concern with blood an "obsession" so much as him being passionate about Targ power resting in their ability to ride and control dragons, which itself is proven to be a trait passed down through reproduction. Nettles is a glaring exception (if we cannot prove she somehow isn't a bastard from a random Velaryon or Targaryen).
Rather there are two dominant theories as to how Daemon ever came to care for Nettles:
she is is his bastard daughter from his trysts before marrying Rhaenyra (Nettles was 17, and Daemon was married to Rhaenyra for about 10 years)
in the beginning, her being a not so "obvious" Targ, he wanted to find out about her ancestry if she was really a Targ bastard, and if not try to see how she bonded with Sheepstealer enough and thus learn one way how his own ancestors bonded FIRST approached dragons (the ones who had no bond at all with them), him being disconnected from that history with the Doom and the hundreds of years between that and the true beginning of Valyria; then him being impressed with her bravery and loyalty (she cried tears over Jace's death and could have been close with Addam and Alyn)
There are other theories as to why: she reminds him of his own daughters, especially Baela (even in the book) for her character and determination and bravery; the infamous romantic/sexual/sexing up "maidens" angle.
Daemon is a family-is-power/power-is-family man and love is also a huge factor in how he values family. They are interwoven inside his psychology. He gets some of his validation from their belief in his skills and his willingness to protect them from competitors and enemies (which in turn defines his perception of them and their ruling capabilities). Very much a Brynden Rivers, Visenya, Baelon the Spring Prince, Viserys II, Aemon the Dragonknight.

Now that the episode is out this are my thoughts about it (from someone who haven't read the books):
Rhaenyra: The true heir, she has done nothing wrong ever. After loosing her children she better burn everything adding to this Emma's performance... The stillbirth gave me chills, they can act!!
Daemon: He has always been a bitch, but not the type to abuse Rhaenyras, other than that I love his pathetic ass and Matts acting is making me live him, I love a good grey character. (Show me how much he loves his family tho)
Rhaenys and Corlys: They lost everything and yet they are helping Rhaenyra, that's fucking loyalty! I love their relationship
The kids: Jace is such a good older brother and he knows his duties, Lucerys... My sweet boy I cried so much I will miss you. The twins: Baela and Rhaena my queens, I need more of them I need to set them get more involved and I love Rhaenyra taking them to the table, she knows they have something to offer.
The Greens: I have a love/hate relationship with Aemond, the character is really cool but his actions so far is just him being a jerk towards something that happened years ago, he's a grown man and needs to get over it, Ewan has done a good job and tbh he's hot af so... Helaena she's so pure and lovely, everything that has happened to her is because of her own family ambition. The rest of the green can die I don't care about them.
The dragons: I hate how tiny Syrax is she should be the size of seasmoke by now! But she's such a beautiful dragon and her connection with Rhaenyra is so beautiful and powerful! Caraxes is my baby, i love his design and how he doesn't looks like other dragons. Meleys looks so powerful and she's gorgeous, my red queen! The tiny dragons are also really cool I wish they showed us more!
Vhagar... Listen she's an old lady and probably still thinks shes at war, i do not blame her for what she did, Arrax and her acted out of instinct, i do however blame Aemond. What the hell did he thought it was going to happen??
It was an amazing show, I haven't been this excited and attached to a tv show in ages and is nice to have this feeling back. For me Emma's performance as Rhaenyra is something that really surprised me, they deserve a new world of opportunities and I hope I see them in new projects! I know the 2+ years of waiting is going to be worth it!

Tumblr media
Daemon knew from the moment he saw Aemma that she was his.
Her age, after all, lined up perfectly to the last time he had seen Rhaenyra. A singular moment of lust, giving into a love that could not yet be realized. He was gone before morning, leaving to Pentos with his lady wife, unknowingly leaving behind a babe. He had assumed that once he had heard word of the child’s birth, she was another bastard.
He didn’t realize she was his bastard.
The child was even more Valyrian than he, hair and eyelashes as white as snow. To look into her eyes was like looking into a mirror – she was more his child than Rhaena and Baela ever were by looks alone, and the glare she had given them upon their first meeting showed that her spirit was a match for his.
“It is nice to meet you, Uncle.” She had said, without any hint of gladness in her voice. “Mother has spoken of you oh so much.” Already at eight she had learned the art of false niceties, yet she had not yet learned to hide her distaste. It made him wonder what exactly Rhaenyra had said to their daughter to make him dislike him so.
He supposed he’d have to ask her.
“If looks could kill, I’d already be dead and buried.” Daemon chuckled, walking with Rhaenyra along the dunes of Driftmark, away from all the mourners who grieved the loss of his late lady wife. Finally, they were able to talk together alone, making up for time lost.
“You don’t suppose she somehow knows, and thus holds some resentment?” Rhaenyra questioned, looking thoughtful. “She’s usually quite pleasant. To hear Corlys and Rhaenys speak of her, she is utterly peerless. Perfect, without even the most minute of flaws.”
“It’s highly unlikely she could figure it out with just a glance.” Daemon shrugged, though he also appeared thoughtful. “Though then again, I could immediately tell.”
“Oh please, it isn’t that obvious. Not like Jace and Luke.”
“Not to others, but to me, it is.” Daemon stopped where he stood, suddenly taking Rhaenyra’s hands. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
His question was akin to stabbing Rhaenyra’s heart with a dagger, and she would pull her hands away, not wishing to look at him. “And how would I do that? By letter, where it could be easily intercepted? Go to Pentos myself, away from mine duty and husband? Furthermore, it was you who left me that night. Do you know how it felt to finally have her in my arms? It was agony, worse than the labour by tenfold at least.”
Daemon would take her hands once more, his grip unyielding this time. “If I had known...”
“I couldn’t even look at her, Daemon.” Her voice was strained, and hot tears were beginning to form in the corner of her eyes. “I sent her to Driftmark at the earliest opportunity. I couldn’t stand it. At least in appearance, she looked to be Laenor’s. None could find fault in her, none save for me.”
Daemon would close his eyes, angry with himself, angry with her, angry at the world. But he’d force himself to soften, looking upon Rhaenyra with as gentle of a look as he could muster. “I won’t leave this time. I swear it.”
“You can’t make me go!”
It took three guards to subdue the princess, with how hard she was kicking and flailing. Even then, it was a struggle for them, knowing that once they took her outside, things would only grow more difficult – the frenzied cries of Siren were testament to that.
“Aemma, please. It is time to return home-” Rhaenyra pleaded.
“Driftmark is my home!”
The words pained Rhaenyra to hear, but she could not find fault with them. Driftmark was the only home that Aemma ever knew, and yet she was being pulled away from it against her will. Daemon watched on, unamused, leaning against the wall. The child was far too willful, and far too like him. Rhaenyra was losing control over the situation – he'd have to step in.
He’d take a step forward, his face cold and uncaring, and he would lean downwards to face the squirming child.
“Your mother, your future Queen, has given you an order.” He said, staring deep into her eyes. "You will not be the first Princess to be dragged kicking and screaming away from what she calls her home, and you will not be the last. Come quietly with dignity or be forced to in shame.”
Aemma would stop squirming for a moment, but not out of compliance or of fear. She matched the intensity of his gaze, full of hate and anger. “You aren’t my father. You have no power over me.” Every word she said was deliberately chosen, spoken with the correct enunciation in High Valyrian. And Daemon knew in that moment that Aemma knew her true parentage.
With a single gesture, the guards would let go of Aemma, who stood her ground, even at half Daemon’s size. The air was tense, and Rhaenyra stepped forward to try and intervene, but Daemon would gesture to her as well to step back. “What I am to you has no relevance to the fact that I can easily drag you by your hair to a ship to Dragonstone.” He said, responding in the same tongue she had used.
“Siren would stop you. I’d get her to burn you alive-”
“Then I shall gag you as well and have Caraxes and Syrax subdue the beast if she tries to fight back.” The way Aemma’s eyes narrowed let Daemon know that he had won. “Or you can ride her there yourself. You do not need to smile, you can scowl and cry and swear all you like. All you need to do is do it .”
Rhaenyra would look between her child and Daemon, worried. She knew that Aemma had never been spoken to like that before, and it hurt her heart to see. She had almost tried to intervene again to ask Daemon to be kinder, but Aemma turned her head to the side, conceding defeat.
“Fine.” She spat, this time in the common tongue.
This time, the young princess thought, would be the only time Daemon was allowed to win.
When Aegon was born, the whole of Dragonstone celebrated for a week straight.
Candles burned within every hall of the castle, making the usually dreary place seem homey and inviting. Aemma felt she might choke, so stifling was the sense of joy upon the island. Every person there was gleeful, congratulating her mother and father on the birth of their first boy. A most precious and auspicious son, one deserving of a powerful and foreboding name, Aegon.
Aemma hated the creature the first time she laid her eyes upon it.
The babe was soon a month old, and to hear her mother speak of him, he was a secret genius, some kind of prodigy. Aemma did not understand how this thing, who only slept and ate and shit, could have any kind of smarts at all. More pleased than her was Daemon, excited for the birth of his first true son. When Rhaenyra did not hold him, Daemon did, whispering to him in High Valyrian all his hopes and aspirations.
It made Aemma grind her teeth together in frustration any time she heard them coo to him. No one else shared her hate, not even Joff who had been the baby up until this point. He would look over the edge of the cradle, down at the beast, offering to protect him from any monsters. It made Aemma scoff, as her younger brother still wet the bed in the night whenever he had a nightmare. Jacaerys and Lucerys were just as bad, often fighting with one another over who would get to hold him. If Aemma was handed it, she would let it drop to the floor like a sack of wheat.
By the third month, Aemma’s anger burned so hot she wondered how she did not spontaneously combust into flame. Just a single mention of the name of the monster would sour her mood for the rest of the day, and to hear his cry would make her tear her nails with her teeth until they bled. Her Septa would admonish her and bandage the fingers, but Aemma would rip them off, back to her biting. Rhaenyra had set her aside, pleading with her daughter to just tell her what was wrong, but Aemma could no longer look her mother in the eye.
The fourth month was when she could no longer take it. The monster had been put down for a nap, her parents were off elsewhere, doing something she did not care about. She walked into their room, hiding her hands behind her back, looking at the wet nurse who had been so diligently looking after it. The woman, who was plump and had a voice like a squealing pig. She looked at the cradle, cooing as if bewitched.
Aemma made her presence known with a cough, and the woman jumped slightly, startled. “M-my princess, the prince is just going down to nap. I-if you would so kind as to...”
“Mother asked to see you, she said it is urgent.” Aemma said sweetly, her hands behind her back.
“I shouldn’t leave the prince alone-”
“I can watch him.” Aemma offered the woman a smile. Though initially hesitant, the woman would quickly bow her head and run out of the room, leaving Aemma alone with her quarry. Looking behind her back to see that she was gone, Aemma would go to her parents’ bed and take a pillow, bringing it to the cradle.
It was the first time she had gotten a good look at it. Like her, its hair was silver. It squirmed in its rest, perhaps sensing danger somehow, and she would watch as it opened its eyes to see a dark purple, near black hue. At first, it did nothing, but then it began to cry. Aemma panicked, dropping the pillow to the floor, but she would quickly pick it up and put it over the babe’s face, pressing down and...
“What the fuck are you doing?”
A hand grabbed her roughly, pulling her away. The pillow would roll off Aegon, and he would cry even louder than before. Aemma would turn to see Daemon, more furious than she had ever seen him in his life, and he would use his free hand to slap her across the face – the first time he had ever struck her.
Rhaenyra was not far behind him, entering the room in a rush, picking up her babe and holding him to her chest, shushing him. She looked at Daemon and Aemma, concerned and confused. She had not seen what Aemma was attempting to do.
“I didn’t do anything!” Aemma cried, trying desperately to pull away from him.
“Daemon what is going on-” Rhaenyra would stop as her husband glared at her, the anger in his gaze shocking her to silence and inaction as he began to pull Aemma down the hallway.
“Let go of me!” Aemma screamed, clawing at his arm that held her like a vice, finding his strength to be completely unyielding.
Daemon did not let her go, and he did not loosen his grip until they went to her room. He roughly pulled her inside, practically throwing her to her bed, locking the door behind them. Aemma immediately went onto the offense once he let her go, running to him, hitting what part of him that she could, but it was akin to punching a wall. He let her hit him for a few moments, his anger rising, before eventually he had enough. He would grab her roughly, bringing her back to her bed, and pushing her face down into the covers. But unlike how she had treated Aegon, he allowed her the chance to breathe, with her face to the side.
“Do you want to know how agonizing suffocation is? Your lungs burning, begging for air. The way your body begins to panic, trying to fight for breath?” He hissed. “You should know how it feels before you condemn my son, your brother, to such cruelty.”
Even though it was useless, Aemma would still fight back, but not for her life, merely for control. “Do it!”
Daemon did not intend for things to go this far, but something inside of him snapped. No longer would he allow his daughter that precious chance for air, as he roughly moved her head, pressing it down hard. He would rationalize it as a necessary lesson, to a child who did not know right from wrong, who needed to know of pain, who needed to know what it felt like to struggle for one’s life, but anger had blinded him. For a few brief moments, he had done it with malicious intent, and once he had realized that, he let go of her.
Immediately, Aemma would be back on the attack, her tiny hands attempting to claw at his face. There was no sense of panic, no sense of fear – just anger, just an all-consuming anger and hatred that made his blood run cold.
“Kill me! If you hate me so much then just kill me!” Daemon would stare at her in shocked silence, taking both her wrists in one hand, incapacitating her one more time.
“If you don’t, I’ll kill you first. Me and Siren will kill you. She’s bigger than Caraxes, she could do it easy. We could kill you and Mother and Jace-”
Where had she learned such hate?
“-And Luke and Joff and Baela and Rhaena and the stupid beast you all love more than me-”
There was a fresh red mark on her neck from his hand... when had he...
“-And when that’s done, I’ll die too. I’ll kill myself, so that your stupid legacy dies as well-”
He hadn’t pushed her down on the bed at all. He had choked her with his own hand.
“-Everything you ever wanted will be killed by me. I’ll destroy everything, every last thing that you ever wanted-”
She hadn’t even looked shocked or scared. She just accepted it as her fate.
“-Everything will be dead, dead, dead all because of me. All because of the stupid, unwanted, unloved...”
Daemon pulled her into a tight hug, one hand upon her back, the other at the back of her head. At first, she tried to fight it and pull away, screaming, but Daemon only held her tighter. Tears formed in his eyes as he listened to his daughter scream, those screams eventually dying down into desperate sobs, as her tiny hands clung to the back of his jacket, not trying to push him away but instead pull him closer.
Daemon did not know how long they sat there like that, but he held her until she wore herself out, falling asleep within his embrace. But even then, he would not let her go, wanting to make up for lost time and lost love.
There was a lot that needed to be made up for.

Pep!! Here (again) to tell you how incredible chap 20 was!! :') My absolute favourite part was Aemond's initial response to Shaera's collapse. Not flying into a rage or going numb or being sad but wondering how she'd act in the situation as if she wasn't the one who was injured. Trying to play make-believe as if she was gonna walk right in as a spectator. The part where he wanted to clean the blood hit me so hard I literally cried bc that resonated so much with my own experience of grieving. I think a lot of stories tend to gloss over/neglect the fact that denial is one of the first and most instinctive ways humans respond and process traumatic/sorrowful events. When I first knew that someone close to me was terminally ill, I didn't react by crying or being upset. My initial thought was about when I'd get a chance to cook with them again- which is ludicrous bc I knew deep down that would never happen anymore- but that was how I found myself dealing with the heaviness of everything. The way you wrote that part in the story truly makes me think that you know what it means to live as the characters you write- that they're real, complex individuals that live and experience things the way we do too. Love you for that!! On a separate note, Baela and Qoren really stuck out to me so much this chapter!! Baela- I LOVE HER. The way she's both the family's voice of reason and so loving of her family is amazing. Baela really shone in this chapter- what with cleaning Shaera's blood and supporting Rhaenyra and comforting Joff, this queen had A LOT on her plate. Second mother of the blacks honestly. I especially appreciate how grounded Baela is in the reality of everything that's happening, while Shaemond are fools in love and all. But obviously the backdrop of their relationship is immensely tense and political, and I think Baela provides that timely reminder. Also Qoren omfg, I've always been neutral towards him but I loved him in this chapter??!!?? The way he managed the whole poisoning fiasco and the realisation of what it was that Shaera drank AND how he still cares so deeply about her in spite of what he knows. Honestly if Shaera's not gonna husband him up, I AM. Qoren x ayalou truther now!!! Also I think the manner in which you've laid out the relationships between the blacks and the greens in this fic is so intricate. And it really came to the forefront this chapter. A regret I've always had after reading f&b is that there wasn't much room given to exploring the complexity of the relationships between both parties. It was pretty clear they hated each other, yes, but there wasn't the same kind of tension and layeredness to it as GLBH imo. Anyway I can't believe I've written a whole essay in your asks AGAIN (when I struggle with writing 1-paragraph long discussion posts for school lol)- sorry if I was rambling!! TLDR: I love you + your work so much and cried multiple times reading this chapter. Sending you warm hugs!! <3
AHHH HI AYA! THANK U FOR THIS DEVASTATINGLY KIND ASK!! I’ve been wanting to post a little something but I like to give people like 5 ish days before I post anything about the chapter, so I hope that’s okay!!
THE DENIAL!! While Aemond is certainly the most rash out of all of them (in my opinion cause of his actions in f&b and even a little in hotd), I think there’s a certain hesitance. And denial! Because why would anyone think that Shaera of all people has been poisoned? Shaera mf Velaryon?? The girl who literally could not even hurt a fly?? There’s also a realization that the girl he very much is infatuated with is doing something she should not be (bleeding) and that’s fucking horrifying. He knows blood bothers her and he knows that he would do anything to keep her from bleeding if it meant she was comfortable, but he can’t do that, and I think that makes him go error 404 for a moment, and even then that denial carries over to when he finds out about the betrothals. Now he’s agitated and clearly ready to snap (and he does a little), but when he hears about the marriages, he has to shut down again before he does something bad and there’s something dangerous about him rn. He’s not acting poised—save for when he goes to Shaera’s bedside, but even then, he’s brought to tears even if he doesn’t realize it—and that’s not the Aemond that Alicent (and Criston) raised, and only his siblings are realizing that.
I’m so glad you loved Baela and Qoren this chapter!! They’re some of my favorite characters to write! Baela truly is the voice of reason and she cares so much about keeping everyone safe and happy, even if that means risking the short-term happiness here and there. She truly thinks like the future Queen of the Seven Kingdoms and she’s certainly the best of Daemon and Laena, and that’s why I love her so fucking much (even if people are upset she’s not team shaemond LMAO—Guys it’s for a good reason!!). And Qoren!! My dilf. My king. My baby girl. Qoren certainly has his jealous moments prior to this chapter but there’s a certain smugness about him. A security. He knows that he has Shaera’s hand secured and at this moment in time, he could care less who she’s fucking (though he certainly has his suspicions and it’s not a happy thought) because that’s not what matters. This isn’t the right time for him to get jealous (or at all) and he understands that because he’s older, more mature, and has many more life experiences than some people sksksksk. His goal isn’t even to save Shaera cause he wants to marry her but because she deserves to be saved. She deserves to live, and Qoren will not see another woman die unnecessarily if he can help it (and he can certainly help it this time, whereas with his wife, he couldn’t.)
I’m so glad the relationships are landing. That means so much to mean cause I spend so much time on making sure I build them as organically as possible. They take a lot of time, but I always feel so pleased with how they turn out with each chapter and I’m so happy that people love them all just as much as I do.
Thank u so very much for this lovely comment aya. I loved it and I hope this response ,does it justice <3

FAYS Q’s: How did they break Nyra dying to Luke? I assume nearly everyday after she dies they have break it to Luke again and that’s a day of mourning. They’re gonna have to make letters or something saying she’s gone to essos or something but eventually Luke will be so old he’ll know enough time has passed 😢😢😢
Can’t stop thinking about this AU. Everyone’s moved on but I’m still here 😔
Tumblr media
Rhaenyra knows she’s dying before anyone else does as she can slowly feel herself becoming weaker with time to the point where she no longer feels the need to eat or drink as much. She had little to no energy and keeps herself from sleeping as much as she wants to because she needs to be there to comfort her baby day after day. During this time I imagine she’ll call Aemond to her rooms and hands him a box of dozens of letter’s she written to give to Luke once she’s finally gone.
This is such a bittersweet moment because their relationship as brother and sister developed from their shared love of Luke. He’s the one who brought them together so it’s understandable that Aemond’s come to care for her as she had him. Kissing his big sister’s hands as he promises to keep her son safe and as happy as can be. (Why am I crying? 😭)
Some of the written excuses for her absence include visiting Jace and Baela in Kings Landing or out in spicetown with Daemon (though he’s been dead for years at this point) Others letters are of the truth, gently explaining that shes only weakening by the day and if he’s reading this that she’s already gone and can always visit her at the pyre where they burned Visenya and Daemon.
Once Rhaenyra is gone Aemond usually gives Luke the letters detailing that shes on a trip or visiting their extended family at the Vale or wherever her grandchildren now live as adults with children of their own. He knows its wrong to keep the truth from him but he can’t take the mental breakdown he knows will come should he break his sisters death. After a while Luke can clearly see that he’s far too old for his mother to still be alive but he still accepts the letters because he doesn’t want to believe anything else.
By the time Luke is in his seventies he simply crawls into bed and cries quietly once it sets in that Rhaenyra is gone, but it’ll be okay because Aemond will always climb in beside him and cuddle his husband well into the next morning 🥹

but also, less sad meta for aemma: how is her relationship with each of her siblings? and how is her relationship with rhaena and baela?
The Gist - Aemma loves her siblings. Velaryon and Targaryen alike. A really special thing about Aemma is she looks like her mother - but the siblings that share her last name don’t.
Jacaerys, Lucerys and Joffrey share very little features with Aemma. They’ve got brown hair, dark eyes, pug noses - and Aemma looks very Valyrian. Silver-gold hair, more inclined for blondeness, violet eyes, and a nose that... some might say was almost pug like, yet never matched.  For years she felt like the odd one out  - which is why it’s my personal head canon that she would have naturally gravitated towards Alicent’s children because they look like her. She looks like her mother, yes, but you put all these children into study together, and she feels more like she belonged with the children who looked like her. It made her wish she looked like her brothers. She was so naive she thought the fault might lie with her for a few years.
Baela and Rhaena joined the family as sister’s - and in book canon, already future good sisters - and they are both Velaryon and Targaryen. In my mind, Aemma adores Laenor so much, and by extension adores Laena because Laenor adored her - and Baela is quite similar to Aemma herself in ways, and yet so is Rhaena. She rejoices to be given sisters, and yet cries at the idea she might be forgotten. She has the deepest respect for them.
Aegon and Viserys were born to late to soothe her feelings of being an odd one out amongst her mother’s children. And the fact they were born, looking the very image of their parents, Aemma almost comes to resent babes until she realises how it looks.
More under cut.
Jacaerys ‘Jace’ Velaryon. Aemma was born clutching at his heel, as if even in the womb she demanded not to be left behind. He is scarcely older than her, and sometimes Aemma wonders if there truly is an elder one or not. I specifically made Aemma younger so that she didn’t mess with the succession too much, and the result has become my interpretation of these two children who look so different from one another, not really having a bond that people expect of twins. Aemma often feels she didn’t share a womb with him. She has this great respect for her brother, and when he is king, she wants to serve him and the realm. In the show Jace questions whether he is a bastard, in my interpretation he knows how dangerous that is, and so the fact that Aemma clings to her Velaryon identity and showers it in her brothers? I think he might just be grateful for it. She is always representing House Velaryon, even knowing Jace would someday become Jacaerys Targaryen. She has made him things merging both sigils for name days, and after they left for Dragonstone he became her preferred sparring partner. Unlike the show, i think Jace, with Daemon as a step father at minimum, would’ve been a very accomplished swordsman. As Rhaenyra’s son, would’ve been competent in Valyrian. So they’d speak to each other in Valyrian, they’d spar when she cared to, and most of all, she decided she would crown him herself when their mother died. I don’t think Jace would have ever realised that Aemma felt odd for not looking like him, wouldn’t have asked. Would have just noticed her preference for the company of her aunt and uncles, and been resigned to it, if not slightly teasing. She moans and groans at him, and they bicker for the close proximity they must always be in - but Jace knows, I think, that when it came down to it, she would fight for him. He doesn’t outlive her long, and he feels her death heavy on his shoulders.
Lucerys ‘Luke’ Velaryon. Can everyone say favourite brother? He comes a year after her and Jace (Or more show wise, i kinda like some of the show ages), and she was so fascinated with this tiny little pink think. Always trying to hold him, always being shooed off. The first time she’s able to articulate words about him she calls him ‘My babe’ instead of ‘The babe’, and Laenor made the mistake of not correcting her. Everywhere Aemma went, she dragged poor little baby Lucerys along with her, even when he complained about it. I think as he grew older he began to appreciate it. The fact that Aemma never wanted to leave him behind, always wanted him to come with her. He looks a lot like Jace, and yet Aemma is sure she sees herself in Luke’s face sometimes. Other times she feels entirely foreign from him. Sometimes Luke is quicker than her, and when he is, she is willing to share her oh so prized pudding. Everyone knows he’s her favourite brother, and that he amuses her so greatly sometimes she is unsure if she will ever be able to keep a straight face when he is a man grown. I think of all her relationships with her siblings, this is the best one. There is an innate trust that, while extending to all the siblings, Aemma drops things the quickest for Luke. There was only one time where this wasn’t the case - and that was the night Aemond lost his eye. She could not get a full story from anyone, and as she had only arrived to see the loss of the eye, she felt such great confliction. I think i established that she is a Dreamer, but not to the sort of same extent as Show Helaena. She thinks they’re just that - dreams. But she dreams of Luke and Storms, and she can’t quite make sense why it keeps happening until the news comes from Storms End. And I think we know from my other meta how that went.
Joffrey ‘Joff’ Velaryon. This relationship deviates greatly across show and book. Book wise, he’s just three years younger than her, maybe even two and a bit - and he has all the bad luck of coming after Luke. I wouldn’t say Aemma neglected him as brother, but it was definitely noted that Aemma felt she did not have enough love to spread amongst her brothers, and as each new one was born, had even less to give. Joffrey shouldered this like a champ, for he was not the youngest, and he would always get more love than Aegon and Viserys. When Luke died, Joffrey was kept from mounting his dragon by Corlys and Rhaenys - and sent to tend to his half mad sister. It frightened him, the things she muttered in her delirium, and her letters were only sent because Joffrey had half the mind to seal them and pass them to a raven. All because she asked him to ensure they were sent. She seems to have relied on him greatly in this time, and when Aemma herself died - Joffrey seemed to take up arms once more, swearing himself the avenger of his sister, that he would bring her bones to his mother and they would place her to rest properly. Joffrey died before he could make that come true. If Aemma had lingered long enough for her assassin to hear her words, she would have eventually come to tell him “Flee before my brother Joffrey hears. He is prone to rage.”
Baela Targaryen. Her step-sister, and future good sister and all things been well. Aemma was fond of both her step-sisters, almost as much as Rhaenyra had been fond of Laena. After Daemon wed Rhaenyra, Aemma is said to have cried, mourning her position as only daughter until Baela laughed at her dramatics, and so stunned, Aemma Velaryon pulled a great pout but her tears stopped. Baela laughed louder, and soon enough Aemma was laughing to. She came to appreciate having sisters, and she and Baela both rode their dragons together, though Aemma seemed to always want to goad her into sparring, Baela never fell for Aemma’s tricks. It annoyed Aemma GREATLY. In Aemma’s diary, she recounts hearing of a rumour that her brother wed a northern bastard - and waves it off as “That is so silly! Who would not wish to wed Baela Targaryen?” News of Aemma Velaryon’s death reached Baela’s ears, and it is said Baela said nothing for more than five minutes before asking if they were going to do anything about it, or if Baela was to do so herself. Rhaena Targaryen had to talk her sister down. After the birth of Laena Velaryon, her daughter, it is said that Baela was the first to receive Aemma’s diary - though it is unknown if she read it, passing it and the unsent letters within it on to Rhaena in Old Town.
Rhaena Targaryen. Her other step sister. Much like when Baela laughed at Aemma’s tears, Rhaena is said to have tried to soothe her, telling her how wonderful having a sister was. In time, Aemma came to appreciate Rhaena and her sensibility, often looking to her before making some sort of impulsive decision. To say Aemma Velaryon loved her step-sister would be an understatement. Betrothed to her favourite brother, Aemma spent much time ensuring Rhaena was worthy, and Mushroom boasts that Rhaena passed every test that Aemma set for her with such flying colours that Aemma asked her mother if she could take Rhaena’s hand instead. She was naturally, denied, but the request seemed to have amused Prince Daemon. Aemma became a much graceful dancer with Rhaena around. After the dance Rhaena received Aemma’s diary and letters. What she did with them is unknown, only that a Hightower descent of hers took them to the maesters for history keeping - a fact Aemma would have hated, for Rhaena would have known that Aemma hated people reading her private thoughts.
King Aegon Targaryen, Third of his name. She never lives to see the boy king crowned, and his council of regents were all very grateful for it as the knew Aemma Velaryon would have claimed the throne in her own name before giving it to her little brother. When he was born, all pink and silver haired, Aemma is said to have HUFFED, entirely put out that he looked like her when she was so much more grown than she had been. She admitted that she wished he had been born sooner, and perhaps if he had, Aemma may have not made such close companions of her aunt and uncles. Six years younger than her, or nearly 13 or more show verse, the dynamic shifts again. At six and ten, she had no interest in babes, let alone her younger brothers who reminded her just how out of place she had once felt amongst her own siblings. Too young to soothe her, Aegon was swiftly followed by Viserys. I don’t want it to be misconstrued - Aemma does love her brother, but she openly admits to not loving him as much as her Velaryon brothers. “He is a son who looks like his father. What need has he of my love?” Signifying a great deal of JEALOUSY from her. It is said Aegon remembers her fondly though, that he was entirely unaware of her jealousy and disposition towards him. He seems to have invented an entirely fictional idea of her.
King Viserys Targaryen, Second of his name. Oh boy, when this brother was born, Aemma hopped on her dragon and flew three times across all of Westeros. Never would Aegon and Viserys feel alone, when they had each other, when they looked like each other, and Aemma Velaryon resented it. He was born too late. I think he was, book and show, too young for Aemma to have wanted to bond with him. She did not wish to hold him, refused to speak his name for a week after he was given it. When she finally relented to holding him, she placed him back down after a few minutes and went about on her day. Rhaenyra had hoped Aemma would be over her jealousy by then, but it was not to be. Viserys himself likely scarcely remembered her, and as Aemma laid dying, she did hold regret for how little she bonded with her two youngest brothers.
Visenya Targaryen. A stillborn deformed dragon-fetus. Watching her mother labour, and begging to help, Aemma got to witness the sight of Visenya, and never before had the girl been so afraid to marry. So afraid to have a child knowing that was what she might produce. Though marriage pacts were discussed for her during the war, Aemma wrote Jace distinctly that he was not to give her hand away, “For I would not subject myself, nor a husband to a monster I may create such as our sister.” Visenya terrified her.

▪︎Mastre Norren, present in Harrenhal, tells us that Daemon was crazy about Nettles, as a man would be about his daughter.
▪︎Nettles was 17 years old, the same age as Baela and Rhaena, Daemon's own daughters.
▪︎Daemon affectionately nicknamed Nettles: Nettie.
▪︎Mushroom, dwarf of the court of Rhaenyra, known for his unreliable, often sexual and where sordid testimonies, is the very first source to declare that Daemon would have fallen in love with Nettles and would have taken her as a lover, when he did not wasn't even present at Harrenhal.
▪︎4 / 5 other sources also maintain that Nettles & Daemon were lovers, these written after Mushroom's testimony, therefore relying on the latter as well as other rumors, having in fact not been present either Harrenhal.
▪︎Glyadyn meanwhile, the maester who wrote Fire and Blood, supports Mushroom's version as the most likely to change his habit. Except that Glyadyn writes the book at least 1 century later, when all the characters of the dance are nothing more than dust, therefore not having even attended the events, based on biased testimonies of 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th hand . Without forgetting that Glyadyn is a maester, not very "for" the Targaryens in general (like most maesters) a pure product of his time, himself a misogine with his own prejudices which would necessarily lead him to lean more towards the simple history of lovers, even if, as the book says, there is no concrete proof of this. The only thing we can be sure of between Nettles and Daemon is that they spent their days hunting down Aemond on Rhaenyra's behalf.
Some people: Let's conveniently ignore those CRUCIAL elements and information of this relationship, and that completely changes the context of the interactions/relationship between the two characters! It doesn't matter that all the sources recounting Nettles and Daemon as lovers have in fact never seen them interact, relying mainly on word of mouth, and that the only maester who has actually seen them interact supports a platonic relationship! He is necessarily the one who is wrong since he is the only one to say it!
Sorry, but that Daemon:
▪︎taught Nettles how to eat, stand, and dress properly.
▪︎gave Nettles gifts: A hairbrush, mirror, coat and boots.
▪︎had adjoining rooms with Nettles.
▪︎ always had dinner and lunch with Nettles.
▪︎would be able to go after the people of Harrenhal if Nettles was ever killed.
▪︎loses his smile/joy reading Nettles' execution letter.
▪︎chooses to go against Rhaenyra's order to free Nettles.
▪︎ sees his emotions expressed through the cries of Caraxes when Nettles leaves.
Absolutely NONE of these things basically indicate a relationship of a romantic and/or sexual nature. All of this can easily pass within the framework of an affectionate platonic father & daughter / mentor & student relationship. Some Daemon reactions may not even be completely related / relate to Nettles, such as the reactions to the letter and the shouting of Caraxes.
The only things that can really look suspicious, to our modern eyes, are possibly already; the baths and the possible bed sharing, which is actually not even safe. However, you and many others had dealt with these aspects in depth. I will just say that for the baths, they are described in a learning context, where Daemon teaches Nettles, a girl who has always lived alone in the street, with no one to really educate her, how to wash properly/have a healthy lifestyle. It's the people who romanticize and or sexualize the baths, because the text itself never does that. And yes, platonic baths, it fucking exists, no offense to some who think they are smarter by claiming the opposite. Nudity = sex is a concept that bothers me so much...
I didn't even know Nettles & Daemon was a thing until I came to tumblr to say. Never when reading the book did I interpret them as lovers and I'm amazed at how many people do?! How is that even possible?! It seems to be totally at odds with the way GRRM writes their romances, especially because of the specific age difference between the characters. Some even say that Daemon was living out his fantasy with Nettles, leaving Rhaenyra to fend for herself, which is essentially untrue. Where the hell is this bullshit coming from too?
I think the ASOIAF fandom is one of the worst I've seen. The Sansa, Arya and Daenerys stuff alone is crazy, but the Fire and Blood character takes are even worse! The stuff I saw on Aemond?! Enough to make me nauseous for weeks.
Overall I only liked the series for Daemyra (although I hated episode 10) and sometimes Viserys. The rest was crap. Alicent, one of my favorite villains ever was ruined and I'm not even talking about the rest of the adaptation massacre, of certain sets and especially the fucking costumes.
I agree with you anon. And relate. I also didn’t even know people shipped them or even thought they could have had sex until I created a Tumblr account back in Oct ‘22.
And I argued/proved against DaemonxNettles through these posts:

One correction: Norren and the lord he works for are at Maidenpool, east of Harrenhal. Daemon and Nettles were at Maidenpool, not Harrenhal.
