Favorite Games of 2023 Part 4: Pseudoregalia
I knew Pseudoregalia was going to be good the minute I started the game and did the input for the Mario 64 side flip jump and the game’s main character Sybil did her own version of that satisfying jump. One of my all time favorite things to do in a Mario game (or any game) is that side flip, a jump that is as practical as it is just simply satisfying to do. Sybil being able to do that jump without needing any of the power ups found in the game told me that the developers of this game knew the importance to making character feel good jumping around in a 3D world. Her movement only gets better from there with a bunch of new platforming abilities that makes her capable of getting what feels like anywhere in that game world if desired. The pure control you have over Sybil's platforming capabilities gave me so many great moments of pure curiosity to experiment with what could work. What's better is watching friends and others play the game and figure out their own solutions to the game's open ended platforming design. There are no wrong answers in the world of Pseudoregalia, just results.
This game was a complete surprise in just about every way, just the best feeling platformer I’ve played in a long while in this small, cleaned up former game jam game. I’ve followed the main dev rittzler on twitter for a few years because the gameplay clips of their work have all looked fun and impressive and they always shared other really cool indie dev work as well. So, I was excited to finally play Pseudoregalia when it was announced to be released. It's super low price (6 dollars USD) and being something I was able to finish in the span of one day alone was a huge breath of fresh air in this current gaming environment. It’s something I’ve been personally thinking a lot about recently is the appeal of a simpler, lower priced game. It’s appeal to me coming from playing something that never needs to be some sort of omnipresent, super game. Instead, Pseudoregalia presents itself in a humble statement of, ‘here, enjoy a few hours jumping around this wacky maze like castle as a goat bunny lady!’.
I'm not a person who typically ever has a desire to replay a game right after finishing it, I usually prefer to immediately move on to another game that I've been wishing to play for for a while. Pseudoregalia is a game I've played four or so times now from start to finish, I even started another playthrough in preparation for this drawing/writing and found myself wanting to play it all the way through again. Its the first time I found myself actually physically seeing the appeal of speedrunning, a hobby I always just enjoyed as a spectator. Pseudoregalia just lends itself so neatly to that part of me that loves routing out a path for stuff. How quickly can you find all the vital movement abilities for Sybil? What's unnecessary, what can be improved, what can be gathered while on the path of gathering something else. From at least my perspective of not actually investigating the proper speedrunner's routing, the options feel immense. From these handful of times replaying the game I've gotten a good handle of finding my way around the map and a good idea of how to get a lot of the really important movement abilities almost immediately. It also made the game feel quite different from how it felt to me with my first playthrough, what was once mysterious and labyrinthine was now a familiar playground.
That is one thing I will miss when doing those repeat playthroughs is that sense of discovery that occurred with that initial run. Soon before Pseudoregalia came out, I watched a lot of Videochess and spaghoner's exploration and documentation of the incredible Mario 64 hack, B3313 ( https://youtu.be/pLKB0SG0i8c ). I found that hack incredible at creating a sense of uneasiness and wonder from simply keeping you constantly guessing what was next behind each door something even those two expressed while streaming. During my first playthrough of Pseudoregalia, I was completely lost in that castle and was constantly finding paths that led to new zones or ones circled me back to old ones from hours ago. It was a pretty incredible feeling of discovery that only wore out it's welcome at the end when I just needed one more big key necessary for progression. What helped make exploration in both of these games engaging the whole time is that aspect of having a really fun character to move around as while being lost. It was okay with being completely lost because I could still just keep doing these long jumps into wall kicks that just make Sybil go fuckin' fast in an immensely satisfying way.
I think in the time it's taken me to think about this game again, and briefly revisit it in preparation for this art/writing I've come to decide that this is probably my favorite new game of 2023. In a year full of fantastic platformers to pick from, this one was just a class above in terms of movement design and movement application.

Trembling Essence [Extended Demo]:💙Thank you!💙
Tumblr media
Hello and welcome new followers! First off I just want to show my appreciation and gratitude for all the support I've been given this week with these two concept drawings. :,]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't show sketches as much as I used to since they can look really messy but maybe it's time to change that into the new year! :D
They were suppose to be colored up and uploaded as a Valentines Day surprise but, there was a lot of stuff going on which gave me art block so I didn't get a chance to finish them on time. I'm still sort of getting over it now though. :,]
A big thank you to everyone that has been patient and supported this through a comment, tip jar, likes, re-blog, fanart, share, etc.
I whole-heartedly appreciate the positive reception from the [Extended Demo] and it really makes me happy seeing familiar people and newcomers interested in what I'm creating. I'm still adjusting and need time to get to everything I might've missed.
If you have any questions about the game/Noah feel free to ask here please. I would really like to hear from you guys!
If you've already sent in a ask, I did see it I just need time to answer since I like to respond with doodles/drawings and my art block isn't as bad as before. :]
I'm also going to try and re-organize all of the lore and art about Noah/the game posts since going through the tags don't have them ordered correctly. I didn't know about this until recently. :[
Game development Trembling Essence [Extended demo] update:
I've only been able to catch a few glimpses of playthroughs and wasn't able to watch them fully so I don't have too much to say right now but I did notice that one of the full routes out of the two in the [Extended Demo] weren't found so I'm going to post two more CG previews here and on the game page as a hint, hopefully this helps!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As far as any future updates go for the [Extended Demo], I don't have an answer yet! I want to see how things will continue to go and not rush anything. :]
Anywho, that's all I have to share right now. Once again, thank you to everyone's' kind words and continued support, especially those that have been here since the beginning and have been very patient and understanding! I wholeheartedly appreciate it. :,]

In honor of my partner and I finishing our first Slay the Princess playthrough, I started a little project against my better judgment and wanted to share a little bit of it. This bit contains spoilers for the beginning of The Nightmare's route as well as how you get on the route in the first place. I've already written for The Tower as well as the offshoots of The Fury and The Apotheosis , but The Nightmare is my girl and I love her, hence why I'm posting what I've written for her so far. It didn't format well from the doc to Tumblr, so just be warned that there's a few giant blocks of text below the cut
He sits in front of you, weaponless and vulnerable as he gives his interrogation. But you do not strike. Instead, you play the victim. There’s no reason to make this harder than it needs to be, and if you can convince him to simply free you, that would make things far more simple. You maintain your facade of the defenseless and scared princess, taking extra care to assure that your voice never loses that pathetic waver. You’re certain that he finally believes you and that you’re about to be set free from these confines, but then he makes the suggestion of keeping you down here to chat. That is enough to make you lose your patience. Your face immediately drops the big doe-eyes and trembling lip to be replaced with a look that is far more cunning and threatening. You assure him that one way or another, you are getting out of this cabin. And if he doesn’t help you, he won’t like what happens. If it’s from dropping the act or testing your threat you aren’t sure, but he makes the decision to simply walk out and leave you here. Your voice shakes with barely-contained hatred as you watch him leave and hear the door to the basement shut, leaving you alone and cold in the dark once more. You start to hyperventilate, adrenaline born from fear and anger coursing through your veins. You have spent your entire existence trapped in this godforsaken basement, and when you finally meet another living creature, someone who could’ve been your hope and salvation, they turn away and abandon you. You can’t do this anymore. You can’t be alone. You won’t be alone. You refuse to be alone. And as your fear and panic and anger rises, you let out a piercing wail that could shatter glass. You free yourself from your chains and make a frenzied dash for the stairs. You trip over yourself as you scramble to reach the door, your nails leaving scratches in the old wood as you grab onto anything to maintain your ascent. And when you finally reach the door, you pound on it and throw yourself against the wood. He’s blockaded the door, you can tell because of the resistance every time you smash your body against it. But you refuse to stop even as bruises begin to blossom over your skin and splinters dig into your flesh. You will not be abandoned again, and you will do whatever is necessary to keep that from happening.
You call out to him as you bang on the door, your voice broken and crazed. You all but beg to be let out, assuring him that this door can’t hold you for long and suggesting that he get on your good side. When he doesn’t respond, you increase your efforts tenfold, threatening to tear him apart. You will never forget what he’s done to you, nor will you ever forgive it. And then he has the audacity to call you a monster, for putting on an act. Your mind reels at that accusation, and your voice begins to grow hoarse as you accuse him right back of teasing you with the fresh air and freedom you so desperately crave. He doesn’t answer once more, and you bite back a scream of despair as you throw yourself against the door again and again and again and again. You don’t know how long you abused your body with these repetitions, but finally the door gives way and you burst through to the other side. You stand there for a moment, breath coming in ragged, wheezing pants as you crumple to the ground. Your body aches with every breath and you can’t stop trembling. Your throat is raw from the screaming and your hands are bleeding, nails horribly broken and fingers and palms covered with splinters. Your wavy hair is matted with sweat, dust, and blood. But none of that matters, because you can feel the night air through the windows of the cabin.
You choke out a sob of relief as you sit there, letting the tears fall down your face. You’re finally free. But your job isn’t done yet. When your eyes clear, you can see him asleep against the opposite wall, and your heart is filled with a cold vengeance. You could easily kill him now, but you want to make him suffer for what he did to you. As you stare at his sleeping body, something in you snaps. You twitch, and your body twitches with you, blinking in and out of existence. So he thinks you’re a monster? Well, then you’ll make him wish this was a nightmare. When he wakes up, he’s immediately in a panic as he notices the door is now ajar. And then you appear before him, grinning madly. His terror intensifies, and you can feel it feeding directly into your newfound ability. As you move closer, blinking in and out of reality like a ghost, you notice that he is quite literally paralyzed with fear. Your manic grin widens, and you taunt him. You’re going to play with him. And you’re going to make it last. As you move forward step by step, you can feel his organs shutting down one by one due to your mere proximity. As his lungs and heart finally cease, you look down at his still body and can’t help but be disappointed. He didn’t last as nearly as long as you’d hope to get your revenge, but at least he’s dead. You have lost your toy, but you have gained your freedom. Or so you thought. The cabin wouldn’t let you leave, even if you tried to drag his body with you. You’ve been abandoned once again.
You awaken to find that your basement has become a dark and barren wonderland. It is filled with shifting shadows and watching eyes: the perfect playground. You feel his presence the second he steps into the basement, and you smile. Your toy has come back to play, and you’ll make sure that he doesn’t break so quickly this time. Even though you’re nowhere near him, you tease and taunt him, letting him know just how much you look forward to playing with him once more. He descends further into your maze and cold joy spreads through your body. You have your toy back, and you’re going to ensure that he will never leave you again. And when he turns right, you finally come face to face with him. You approach him, and already his body begins to shut down. The power you had gained before has increased dramatically, although there are a few setbacks. Your body is unstable and acts more like a phantom as you float and blink in and out of reality at a far more rapid pace than when you started. But to say you didn’t like it would be a lie; you’re far more terrifying this way. And terror is exactly what you need from your little toy. You’re barely inches from his face now, and he almost collapses as his organs immediately fail. But against all odds, he somehow manages to pull himself back from the brink of death. You’re surprised, but you couldn’t be more delighted. It’s more fun this way. He asks you questions and you answer, teasing him occasionally by coming even closer to bring him closer to death before allowing him to claw his way back. You need him alive to leave, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun with him first.

So! I finished my first playthrough of Andromeda Six a couple days ago and I enjoyed it a lot! I had a lot of fun going through the story and I'm really excited for the next chapter even if it's probably gonna be a while till it's out-
I really wanted to ramble about the game here on tumblr so I thought that just for fun I could make a list about what I liked and didn't like about the game! The list will be under the cut :)
DISCLAIMER Just in case: This is in no way meant to be some objective/critical review about the game this is literally just meant to be me rambling my opinion sooo don't take this too seriously. Also story spoilers!!!
Alright the things I liked!!:
The Main Story: I'm a sucker for fun space sci-fi adventures with spcaeships and planets and aliens etc etc especially when the main characters are a group of vagabond rouges (with found family sprinkled in :>) so that was an immediate eye catcher for me. Also the fact that the plot is a "Lost heir has to take back the throne" type deal was really cool too, a little cliche? sure but I never take that as a bad thing
The Characters: Pretty much every single character was a delight to see in action, June was probably my favourite character out of everyone (even though I didn't play his route lmao-) followed closely behind by Vexx and Damon. The entire A6 crew were so fun to watch interact and talk and I always found myself wanting to see more of them. The only character I could say I didn't like was Zane, but everyone else was really fun!
The Art: Not much to say here, the arts just really nice, I wanna see if I can find the main artist on social media somewhere. The backgrounds especially are beautifully done
The 'Nerissa is Alive!!' reveal: After looking through the tags for A6 I saw that this specific plot twist was a bit of a hot topic among the fandom so I thought I'd share my opinion on it too. For the most part, I liked the reveal! I mainly love the fact that the reveal gives way to more drama regarding the MC and their future and how they can decide if they want to immediately revert back to their status as royalty and work alongside their older sister to restablish the monarchy, or decide they think the monarchy was kindas shitty even when Zovack wasn't in charge and they'd rather get to be their own person with the A6 crew. I'm really hoping that choosing to do the latter (which is what I did) leads to a lot of tension between the MC and Nerissa, possibly even a huge fight (Siblings to enemies even?? that would be amazing imo). Overall I think the plot twist could lead to a lot of cool stuff and I'm eager to see what Wanderlust Games does with it
And now onto things I didn't like:
Some of the Writing: Yeah... Honestly even though I enjoyed the game and it's story there's a couple things about the writing I didn't like that much. I won't list everything I found iffy but my biggest gripe is that the game has a lot of tell don't show, don't get me wrong I'm no writing master and it's not the worst thing in the world, but the moments where the characters would just info dump their entire life story in a conversation kinda irked me a bit, I wish we could learn the characters individual stories in a different way
The Pacing: I get that this is a small team limited to a 10 chapter story but tbh I wish the story could've moved just a tad bit slower so we could spend more time in each planet since it feels way too quick and we get limited to only seeing one small part of an entire planet. I also understand that there were probably both out of story and in story reasons as the why we only got to spend such a short amount of time on certain planets, but still, I just kinda wish we got to stay in one place for a bit longer
The Character Design: Okay, so for the most part I think the character designs are all pretty good, I like the clothes and how everyone feels very distinct from one another, overall the game has good character design. It's just that... in my opinion... the designs for the alien species..... are SO DAMN BORING!! The Tilaari I think looks fine even if I think they'd look more interesting if they had at least one alien feature like extra eyes or horns or something, other than that though they look fine. The Kithalpha though... oh my god.... I went into the game reading the description and expecting to see some cool mix of fish and human but instead I get the most bland alien design ever, it's literally just a human but with gills! I didn't even notice there were Kithalpha characters!!!! The game had to tell me that Ayame and the green guy were Kithalpha!!! Other than that I would've never known!!! And that's terrible!!!! (Not to mention that if I'm remembering correctly the game doesn't even say once that Vexx was part Kithalpha, I had to find that out from the Dev's twitter) I'm not even saying that they had to look like some monster alien creature of the black lagoon type thing but the Kithalpha characters couldve had just something anything that made them more distinct! Give them fins or scales or a tail heck ANYTHING FISH RELATED!!!! THEYRE DESCRIBED AS HUMANOID CREATURES WITH THE ABILITY TO ADAPT TO THEIR ENVIRONMENT BUT WE JUST GOT HUMAN + GILLS????? I was so dissatisfied with how boring the Kihtalpha looked that I actively gave my MC more inhuman features despite them being a Kithalpha, fuck the canon Kithalpha look my MC's gonna be a special little snowflake and the devs can't stop me
And Lastly, The 'Nerissa is Alive!' Reveal: So... Yeah. While I do like the twist itself cause of the possibilities, I'm gonna be honest I do agree that the set-up/execution was pretty shit. I don't wanna harp on this too much because this can be fixed as the game updates and gets completed, but still the twist ends up making things feel confusing or downright pointless in hindsight. My biggest annoyance was how literally in the episode right before the reveal we literally get a whole explanation from Vexx describing how he shot and killed Nerissa, like he literally told us how he held the body and saw all the blood but then one episode later surprise Nerissa is doing just fine, there's not even an explanation as to how she survived that (I think I read somewhere that apparently the devs said she was shot through the heart?? Idk if that's true but if it is I- How the fuck did she survive that????) we're just told that K just took her and dipped. Again, this is stuff that can be fixed later on, but it's still kinda annoying
----------
Aaaaand that's about it! Again, don't take this as a critical review, despite my gripes with the game I do still genuinely enjoy it
I'm probably gonna ramble about the game some more in the future, mainly about my MC cause damn did I fall in love with and hyperfixate on him so hard as I was playing. Honestly I'm kinda inspired to create a mini rewrite of the story from my MC's proper perspective without the VN's limitations kinda like how the tumblr account andromedasix did that with their MC

REMUS LUPIN
Summary: Remus follows his crush into the room on requirement
Remus lupin one shot, hozier, fluff, angst, Remus being in love, he falls first and harder, just fun little romanticizing
Tumblr media
Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer’s lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature’s changing course, untrimmed;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow’st,
Nor shall death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to Time thou grow'st.
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
Remus nimbled on his already abused fingertips. The orange beams of light hitting him in the golden affair of the day. The outside corridors inhabited by a group of boys settled on the ledges on the piazza of Hogwarts. I should say this to her, write her something. No. A grind of his teeth and locked tight fist. Bitter trepidation of his mind, battles with the perturbation of his heart.
Anastasia on the other hand was not spending her Thursday contemplating and romanticizing sonnets. She was livid and drawn with a vexed attitude. Storming her way through the open-aired corridor with a miffed expression and shoulders pulled close to her body.
“Is it that time of the month Fox?” Sirius teased watching her come down the hall towards the four boys. Anastasia snapped her head in the direction of the cocky boy she hadn't noticed before. Halting her journey in front of the four and pointing her finger in the direction of the insolent teen.
“I am gonna take a knife and gut you like a fish. Huh, did you here that I fucking gut you and those bloody Hufflepuffs.” And with that threatening comment she continued her driven route into the school.
Anastasia had offered her help to the overwhelmed Lily the week before. The redhead had been juggling taking extra classes, doing all of the prefect duties because of her less than contributive partner, and with the head boy and girl of that year who had put all the tasks on the younger ones. She was troubled beyond belief. In one of her agitated rants to the girls she had mentioned having to plan a mural that the first year Gryffindors were meant to paint along with the other houses. Anastasia had kindly taken the task from Lily.
She was only now regretting it on today of all days. A day she just wanted to get through to keep herself busy to ward off the forlorn thoughts warping her mind. The Hufflepuff prefects had taken all of the yellow paint provided to Gryffindor for the mural. Now she was left to figure out how to help the eleven year olds paint a red lion next to the already finished house murals and then face Lily’s wrath when she sees it.
“Is it weird that kind of did something to me, got a full semi right now.” Sirius asked, watching his friends turn to him with disgusted expressions.
Remus took himself off the perched position of the railing standing tall, using the thin poetry book and smacking Sirius in the head, not bothering to hold on to it. Letting the book fall onto the flinched boy's chest. He rushed off in the direction of Anastasia.
“What, so I'm the bad guy? I can't help that. It's a natural bodily reaction.” Sirius yelled out only to be ignored by Remus. Throwing his hands up and turning to James. “Am I the bad guy Prongs?”
“I still don’t know how you get girls.” James said, shaking head in disbelief and continuing on in his quidditch playthroughs.
-
The alarm and hesitation in Remus’s head was loud. He didn’t know what he was doing chasing after her, he didn’t know what he would do when he would find her. Though flexing his hands and legs staggering with his natural reaction of returning, retreating had sent in, he continued on. Telling himself he would just see if she was all right, that was all. And so he followed in suit only catching up to see her slipping through an unfamiliar door.
Anastasia’s back to the door, her body sitting in the middle of a huge trampoline inside a room equal in size to the great hall. The room was decorated in detailed architecture similar to Hogwarts' large pillars, only more embellished with lions, eagles, badgers, and snakes carved into the stone, surrounding them were rock flowers and pictures of nature. The windows, only shown on one side of the walls built with stained glass hues of reds, oranges, and blues dancing on Anastasia’s billowy white shirt. The windows painted stories of wizards Merlin and Arthur. Tales of the sacred 28 and the founders of Hogwarts.
It was a beautiful and confusing sight, one that needed to be breathed in, looked at through the microscope of a photo but Remus was only given a moment before the sight grew in beauty, her face.
“Lupin?”
“I um.” He let his confusion grow. A trampoline in Hogwarts? “I just wanted to see if you were all right.” His whispers could be heard through the silence and echo of the empty room.
Anastasia watched him, if Remus had been any closer he would have seen the surprise in her eyes. “I’m just a little miffed is all.”
He flexed his hands. “I could beat up Sirius.” He smiled. I made her laugh. Her giggles ricochet through the room into his ears.
“No, no. Sirius’s comments though stupid isn’t really the cause for my….” Her mouth opened and closed and a shrug was her answer. Depression felt dramatic, anger wasn’t the right word and frustration she crude in the subject of her feelings.
Remus nodded he understood the strife of choosing the words to describe the complexity of your feeling layers and all. There was a pause in their stares, maybe a moment to think or just to observe.
“Come here.” She whispered and so he did, moving to climb onto the trampoline. “Nooo take off your shoes first.” And he did, fumbled with the laces of the muggle sneakers placing them next to her toppled over ones and a straight line.
Anastasia leaned over stretching her arm out to help him on, though he didn’t need it. Maybe it was her way of telling him to sit closer not wanting to say it, to speak her want of his proximity into words.
They sat in silence, legs crossed. The silence was not deafening for Remus; it was more comforting the room, her presence surprisingly and the domestic feeling of it all. For Anastasia it compelled her to think to speak once more.
“It's my fathers birthday today.” She was surprised herself she admitted it. It sounded so normal without context, a positive connotation of the words that depressed her greatly.
“Oh.” Remus was confused again. Did she miss him alot or something?
“How are your parents?” Was this the reply he should have given he didn’t know but judging by the fast movement of Anastasia head turning to look at him it was not.
“My parents are dead, Lupin.” She said it in a way as if she felt bad for him and not herself, like she was not the victim but the bearer of bad news. Oh something.
“I’m so sor-” He looked horrified but she cut him off before he could say the words she had heard far too many times.
“It's alright. I just… thought everyone knew. Especially you.” Of course Anastasia had assumed he knew, she had seen him the day of, hell he had been a house down from it. Remus lowered his head in guilt.
He remembered her parents well, his own stories of Anastasia’s father and him. A man he had seen in all his dazzling glory and  a shiny picture of him etched into his mind. Her mother a scary woman in her natural intimidation only to reveal her kind nature. He remembers looking at the couple and imagining himself having that kind of love, no burden son to take care of, or unspoken problems, just pure love.
“It’s kind of nice to know that's not what everyone thinks of me.” Anastasia whispered. It was nice, she knew the pitiful stares and the apologies.

She remembers her first year well, her scars much more striking. She remembers her eleven year old self theorizing all the possibilities into why Remus didn’t want to be her friend anymore, at first it was because he had boy friends now and was embarrassed, and then it was that he no longer recognized her because of the scars now but that was quickly ruled out in her name have been called in the hat ceremony. And then she settled on that he had known what had happened that night and feared her.
Anastasia stood up beckoning him up and holding out her hands which he took kindly. Anastasia started first but with their bound hands Remus followed in suit. The sight was childish for the tall teen and the grown girl. Flying in the air and a plunge into the fluid fabric. The room was loud now, heaving breaths, metal springs contracting, giggles from the two when they would fall into each other or slip with the smoothness of their socks, and the loudest of all their heartbeats.
The jumping continued for how long the two didn’t know but thought of self doubt and fear of the unknown had fled. And grave thoughts of past and frustration of minuscule problems were breathed out through laughter.
And now the panting was loud. The fast rising and falling of chests layed next to one another in the now dim room, the lighting gave only blue hues on their faces. The catching of breath gave them time to indulge in the ceiling. It was painted similar to the ones of Italian churches. Angles, demons, harpies, serpents, gods and lovers.
“I found this room second year.” A pause. “I was crying and it showed me a trampoline.” There was a joking manner in her tone about how silly a trampoline is what a crying girl needs. Remus understood now too caught up to realize this was the Room of Requirements.
Her words held a serious thought in them. “You shouldn’t go exploring this room though. There's things that will just make you sad and tell lies.” She recalled her second year well also how she would sneak into this room for another reason then the play of the trampoline but an object that held her victim as well.
“I’ve only ever read about it.” Remus whispered so close to her ear.
Anastasia smiled at his words. “Well of course you have the bestest of friends, you don’t need a silly room.”
Remus didn’t understand what she had meant. “Don’t you have Lily, Mary, Marlene, Alice even?”
Anastasia pursed her lips for a moment. How was she to word this? It felt rude to the girls and the impact they have on her. “I adore the girl but we don’t talk about anything serious or at least I don’t….” He turned to look at her now, her side profile close to his own. Remus could feel the stray strands of her hair underneath his turned cheek.
“Well who do you talk to?” Remus hadn’t given himself the time to think before he spoke; his words were not meant to call her out, only curiosity plaguing his intent.
“Suppose there's a reason why this room is always open to me.” The paradox in her words was strong.
It was funny the door had stayed open for Remus as if it knew he was required in Anastasia’s need in her moment of weakness.
The October day was one remembered by Remus well. It gave him humility to the romanticized idea he had of Anastasia in his mind. And though this a test to his feeling for her it only had them grow the once roots of their childhood and the stems of his unseen pinning and observations had now grown leaves and parts for buds of new stories. Rather than scare him of her reality not so prim and perfect but now - pure.
And when he entered his room that night with his curtains drawn he wrote her a poem addressed to her with hope that in time he would give it to her.
Her eyes and words are so icy
Oh but she burns like rum on a fire
Hot and fast and angry as she can be
I walk my days on a wire
It looks ugly but its clean
Oh mama, dont fuss over me
The way she tells I’m hers and she is mine
Open hand or closed fist would be fine
The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine
Her fight and fury is Fiery
Oh, but she loves like sleep to the freezing
Sweet and right and merciful
I’m all but washed in the tide of her breathing
And it’s worth it, it’s divine.

Should I play Pathologic Classic, or Pathologic 2?
That depends. How do you feel about visual novels and a little bit of jank? If that's not for you, Pathologic 2 is probably your best bet. Though if I can, I'd like to make a case for playing Classic anyway.
You might have heard a lot of things about Pathologic Classic HD. You might have heard that it's janky. You might have heard that it's ugly. You might have heard that it's nigh-impossible to play. Worst of all, you might have heard that it's not fun, and what's the point in playing a game that isn't fun?
I'm not here to argue about aesthetics or even for the value of negative experiences in gaming. If you'd like to have a philosophical debate about what it means to have fun, by all means, go ahead - plenty of us do enjoy the time we've spent playing Classic. Fun isn't, after all, an objective experience. What I am here to do, however, is tell you that the game is not impossible. Difficult? Sure. Tedious? Sometimes. A lot of walking? You have no idea! But isn't impossible.
(Even without cheating. But we'll talk more about that later.)
Both games are fantastic in their own right, but I don't believe enough people give Classic a chance, and Pathologic 2 is not a substitute for Classic. This is, in part, because Pathologic 2 is not finished. Only one route out of three [at the time of writing this] has been released. Even if it were - the metanarrative of the game is different. The characters and their relationships are different. The town is different. To me, the two aren't even the same game.
Pathologic 2 isn't exactly a sequel, nor is it exactly a remake. It's sort of a re-imagining. The kind of game Silent Hill: Shattered Memories wishes it was. And no one plays Shattered Memories and thinks, "I've basically played Silent Hill." Although as someone who has fixated on Silent Hill for over a decade, I can also confidently say that Pathologic 2 is not the insane bastardization that Shattered Memories is. Not to mention that Classic regularly goes on sale for under $2, so if you can give a two hour long YouTube video your attention, you can give Classic a shot.
I watched the Hbomb video, so I know everything I need to know about Classic, right?
Oh boy.
No, you don't. If you're looking for substitution videos, Pathologic For Those Who Will Never Play It is closer to what you need. Though as much as I love that video, I still urge to you either play the game yourself or watch a Let's Play of it. I know of three: SulMatul, Laila Dyer, and Keith Ballard; the latter two are blind LPs.
Why do I insist you play this game for yourself? Because it's a role-playing game. You wouldn't get the same experience of watching someone else's build in Disco Elysium as you would with your own, and the same is true here. Yes, it's more of a book than a lot of other RPGs you might have played, but part of the charm of the game is playing it the way you want to, and all that entails.
You might be thinking to yourself, "Well, no one can tell I've only seen the Hbomb video!" I regret to inform you that yes, we can absolutely tell.
Play the game.
Okay, fine, I'll play Pathologic Classic. Which route should I start with?
That's up to you, but I will say that people start with the Bachelor's route for a reason. He's an outsider to the Town, so you're more likely to get lore that wouldn't be available to the Haruspex. And the Town is strange, so that's information that you'll want. His route is also a little easier than the Haruspex's route, and the Changeling's won't be available to you yet.
If you do opt to start with the Haruspex's route, more power to you. Just keep in mind that his route isn't the only interpretation of events. In fact, no one route to the game is the only interpretation of events. Characters will be different from playthrough to playthrough, and it doesn't make one route more canon than another.
Any other tips?
Yes, actually! Quite a few:
Look at the controls before you start the game! The GOG release of the game comes with a manual - that'll be on your computer under Program Files -> GOG -> Games -> Pathologic. I couldn't find one on the Steam release, but you can find it here. Going through your options will let you turn off things like motion blur (which may help the game run better and make you feel less ill), but also get familiar with the key bindings. I've talked to a quite a few people who didn't realize the Bachelor had a plaguefinder or a torch.
Prioritize your daily quest. If you fail to complete your daily quest, one of your Bound will do it for you and they will get infected. This constitutes a fail state for you. You may not be able to get every side quest accomplished the first time you play the game, but as long as you make sure to complete the daily quest done you will be fine.
Make sure to check your letters! The game will make a little noise and a symbol will pop up on the bottom left hand side of the screen when you get mail. Doing this is very important - but don't let this be the only way you get information! Explore, talk to people, check on your Bound every day. Not every quest is going to come to you in form of a letter.
Buy food and supplies before you need them. That stuff is expensive, and prices fluctuate every day.
Loot everything you can! Every garbage bin you pass, every infected house you enter, every mugger you kill. Trading is important for getting things like medicine without paying for it, and selling off what you can't use can get you extra money. You will especially need empty bottles for water to trade with the town drunks. (And for trading - you'll have to click on your own inventory, then the other characters, and then hit the 'v' button.) Learn which NPCs will trade for which items, know their value so that you're never empty-handed in case you come across, say, a shmowder...
Save like hell. Constantly. If an upcoming conversation seems important, save right before you go into it. On Steam, F5 is a quicksave (you can have 2). There will be times when you'll screw yourself over on a conversation. Sometimes you learn more this way, but sometimes this means you can't continue a quest. It's a trial-and-error thing.
You are going to get infected. You should, of course, do what you can to avoid infection, but it's highly unlikely you'll make it through any route without getting infected at least once. It happens.
Daniil's plaguefinder will show you where the plague clouds are, and that can be helpful! Unfortunately, the other two don't have access to this device, so it's best to just try and remember where the plague clouds are. They don't change from route to route.
As Artemy and Clara - you cannot buy any herbs from the Odonghe that you do not have in your inventory. As any healer, you cannot buy things if you have no room in your inventory.
Looking to cheat? I won't tell anyone. Hit the ` key for console commands. 'god' will turn on godmode, 'fly on' / 'fly off' will enable flying (not the same as Pathologic 2's flycam!). 'propf 6995 disease 0' will cure you of Sand Plague (for the Haruspex and Changeling; 6986 is the Bachelor's code). Oh, and if you're going to use godmode, you should know that you cannot sleep if your health is at 0. Just apply a bandage and you'll be good to go.
Oh, yeah, and - don't eat the nuts. They do jack for your hunger. They're there for trading.
What difficulty should I play Pathologic 2 on?
Everyone has their own ideas and rules about how to play the game and on what you should or should not do on your first playthrough. A lot of people insist on playing Pathologic 2 on intended difficulty for the first runthrough, and I tend to agree with that. Even with upgraded graphics and improved controls, this game isn't intended to be easy or combat-driven. The difficulty sliders even say that the game is intended to be "almost unbearable."
That being said - your threshold for "almost unbearable" may be different from mine or someone else's. If the game is too easy for you, make it harder. If you're struggling to the point of wanting to quit, make it easier. Yes, someone will be disappointed in you. Not me though. I don't particularly care, and you shouldn't either. You are the one playing the game, not anybody else. If you're looking for someone's permission to make things easier on yourself, I'm here to give it to you. Some people just aren't good at video games, and there's no shame in that.
But keep in mind that this game is meant to be played multiple times. See how far you can get with the intended difficulty. You can always change it on your next playthrough.
General tips for this game?
Save scumming is harder for this game, and also kind of a waste of time. It doesn't undo your deaths, so you may as well just live with the consequences of your actions. As the loading screen notes, this sometimes makes things more interesting.
Your deaths will, by the way, have consequences on your gameplay. So try not to die.
There is no differentiation between Daily Quest and Side Quest. It's up to you to prioritize. Don't worry too much about completing every quest on the day it's given, either. You're not intended to.
Upgrading your inventory is incredibly important! Things will stack, but only to a certain degree. You can no longer carry 100+ bottles of water at a time. You also won't want to trade all your water away for bandages; you'll heal from sleeping. The water you'll need to make tinctures.
As always, you'll want to be frugal with your money. Unlike in Classic, however, you can barter with most NPCs for food, so your options aren't as limited. Do still buy nuts whenever you get the option to; they're worth more in trading than needles, which can also be used to pick small locks.
Since I've seen some confusion about this - prophyalxis is giving the Bound immunity boosters or tinctures. You won't just have your own list to take care of, though they'll be the most important. No, you're responsible for most of the named characters in the game. Get a feel for which medications work best, and then decide who gets the best treatment. You can't save everyone... without cheating.
Speaking of cheating - that works differently in Pathologic 2. To access the console, you'll have to hold down Control + Shift + F4. You can use flycam, but this is really only to take pictures; it does not move the character to whatever location you are flying to. What you'll probably want access to more is curing yourself of the plague, or turning on immortality. Both are located under Inspector -> PlayerUpdater -> Updatable. The two Elements you'll be most concerned about are Element 0 (the town) and Element 3 (the abattoir). For immortality, you'll expand the folder and change the aspect from False to True. For Infection, you'll expand the folder and change the element to 0 (for no infection). The wiki has a list of the commands for getting items.
And, I cannot stress this enough, buy the bull.
Why does the fandom ship the Bachelor and the Haruspex? They hate each other!
In one route of one game that you are statistically unlikely to have started (3.2% of all Steam players), let alone finished (2.3% of all Steam players). Even if the majority of their interactions were negative - which they aren't - that wouldn't stop people from shipping them. Have you seen how popular Hannibal is? That show ended five years ago and people are still making Will Graham/Hannibal Lecter content.
Though some people do like the ship from that antagonistic angle, the main reason probably stems from two places. The first is that they are narrative foils, and people love to ship narrative foils. Different enough to cause friction, similar enough to connect. The second is the first thing Daniil says to Artemy in the Haruspex route, around 5PM on Day 1:
Yes... Far be it from me to call myself a person of mystical inclinations. However, when I look at you, I get the feeling that nature is playing jokes on us. It's as if both the left and right hand have clutched the head to realize for the first time that they are two parts of a single whole.
Which reads like a reference to the myth that soulmates once shared a body and were split apart. This is how Artemy's first interaction with Daniil starts, and is immediately followed by Daniil raising his reputation entirely and allowing Artemy to sleep in his bed. There's more I could say but, honestly? Play the game and figure it out.
Why do so many people read the Bachelor as trans?
Good question! A lot of his fans happen to be trans, and that probably plays a large part in it. Some get gender envy from his design - ridiculous as a lot of people think it is, I know I'd dress like that if I could afford it. His cravat pin, which the wiki calls a snake, looks alarmingly like a uterus. He's short. His Pathologic 2 incarnation has that hideous bowl haircut that a lot of us had at some point in time in our transition. Most importantly, his goal of defeating death is implied to be a matter of bodily autonomy, for people to choose when it's their time to die, and that's very transgender of him.
It also doesn't hurt that his designer, Meethos, is trans.
If you're wondering why the reading isn't as prominent for the other two healers, I don't know. The headcanons are out there, but for some reason, the fanwork isn't. Be the change you wish to see, as they say.
Why does the Bachelor talk in random Latin?
Why are all these questions about Dankovsky? Anyway, it's not random! It's topical. It's also almost always a common saying - you can find most of them on Wikipedia. Why does he do it? To show off, probably. He's pretentious, what else is there to know?
What's with all the fanfic getting that guy pregnant?
Yeah sorry that's my fault.
What's with the interpretation of him as autistic?
Also my fault.
Why are people so insistent that the Haruspex is gay?
Finally, some diversity! I should correct you, though: I think the prevailing reading is that he's bisexual.
There's a lot of reasons to read him as bi, particularly in Pathologic 2. Don't get me wrong, there are instances in Classic that come across as not-straight; the aforementioned hands line? Artemy can reply that he feels the same. But in Pathologic 2, he gets tender moments with his (now) childhood friends Bad Grief and Stakh Rubin, where the former starts to ask him to run away together and he convinces the latter not to leave with the army. He even attempts to convince the Bachelor to stay in town in both the Nocturnal and Diurnal endings. Aglaya is the canon romance option in both games (for as much as the tragic narrative will allow), but people also read romance into Artemy's interactions with Lara. Hence, the bisexuality.

Spoiler-free review of Undertale Yellow:
I don't ever post on Tumblr but this is going here because I really want to talk about this game.
So first of all I wanna preface this by saying that when the demo came out, a very long time ago, I watched a playthrough of it and wasn't too impressed. This made me not very inclined to try this game when it released. But I was wrong. This game rules. (I decided to play this entirely because I found out there was a fennec fox character. Sue me.)
So first of all, if you like Undertale, you will like this game. It's just Undertale, but more! It's more Undertale! I'd even go so far to say that it's more Undertale than Undertale, since by my reckoning it's longer and has more content.
I should also say I have only played the pacifist route. Should I wait until I've played the other routes to review it? Yes. But I really wanna talk about this game.
This game has really amazing spritework. There was one point where I had to stop just to admire the spritework of a scene. Undertale intentionally doesn't have fully polished sprites as part of its charm which is fair. This still keeps the Undertale artstyle but makes it look so cool. There's so many cool animations it's great.
The music slaps so much it's so good I love it.
The writing and characterisation are great. In a way, I'd say it's even more character-focused than Undertale, since you can argue that the entire story is about one specific character. There were several moments that made me laugh out loud and several moments that made me cry. Which is exactly what you want to see.
The gameplay was really fun, especially the battles. There were some really unique battles here that switched up the battle system in ways entirely different from Undertale. It felt more difficult than Undertale too, but not punishingly so, which was also nice.
There's a fennec fox woman.
I will admit the game starts fairly slowly—the demo content (the Ruins section) isn't anything amazing, but once you finish the second section it really starts coming into its own.
One reason I didn't like the demo is because I disagree with how close this game takes place to Undertale in the timeline lore-wise. Which is petty. But honestly, after finishing the game, I can fully excuse that, because it makes for an amazing story.
Characters from Undertale (with one notable exception) are largely relegated to cameos, which I think is the right decision. It lets the game focus more on its original cast of characters and makes it feel much less fanservicey.
This game expands on Undertale's ideas and world in very interesting ways—exploring concepts that Undertale didn't delve much into.
Honestly, I think this game could stand on its own. I think you could play this without knowing anything about Undertale and it'd still work, which is a testament to how good it is.
There's a fennec fox woman! (I'm mostly joking about this, but come on. She's so cool)
If you like Undertale, play this game. It's literally free! IT COSTS ZERO DOLLARS. Here's the link to download it: https://gamejolt.com/games/UndertaleYellow/136925

Mass Effect
Tumblr media
Playtime: 19h7m Completed: January 11, 2024
I had attempted to play the original Mass Effect years ago, but I never finished it. I was playing a fairly straightforward Paragon leaning Shepard and right after Virmire I felt like I had seen everything the game could offer and stopped. Mostly I was bored, and I didn't know how close I was to actually just finishing the game.
This replay...this replay was different. First of all, I decided to play Renegade, very much against type for me. I had shied away from being "evil" because that didn't appeal to me, but it didn't take me long to realize Renegade in the original Mass Effect was less mustache-twirling villainy and more selfish assholery. The first time I shook an NPC down for more credits after doing a fetch quest for them, I felt a rush. I can play like this? I can just strong arm people into giving me more money? And not only does the game allow this, but it seems to encourage this behavior by giving me way more fun dialogue than the Paragon route? Hell yes.
Secondly, FemShep is the way to go, my goodness. Just a much better vocal performance by Jennifer Hale that manages to delicately balance Renegade and Paragon play styles by perfectly pitching neutral choices that still felt true to character. This meant that even if I didn't want to pick a Renegade option (no, I decided my Shepard wasn't the type to Do a Genocide), I felt encouraged to choose whatever option just felt right. This gave the game a natural flow that was, to me, the ultimate narrative role play.
On release, I remember people making a big deal about how Mass Effect was the first game where your choices mattered. What you did would influence and change major aspects of the game! While that's true (Virmire being the epitome of this), I also remember a backlash where people were complaining that yeah, you could make a handful of big choices, but they're very telegraphed and the plot was going to shake out largely the same regardless. They don't really matter.
What this playthrough taught me is that the first group was correct, but for the wrong reasons. Mass Effect's choices are impressive as hell because of all the micro reactions to your choices. My Shepard had friction with almost every character, and watching her slowly corrupt Garrus by encouraging him to put a bullet in all his enemies with no remorse was gleeful. Being an asshole gave me so many wonderful funny interactions that felt true to the character I wanted to play, the characters in the world, and kept the main plot totally intact. That's an incredible needle to thread. Mass Effect deserves props.
So for folks who gave the game a try and were bored by being a goodie two-shoes Galaxy Jesus, you have my permission to be an asshole. Be selfish. Get a little static. Let the council die (or not!). Make it interesting. You're not going to ruin the game, you're going to deepen the experience a thousand fold.
I didn't let him out.

HELLO CARROT!
Given how apparently I’m immune to playing OW games without recording them now, you’ll audibly hear my thoughts within the next few weeks (I’m posting tomorrow because I’m an absolute maniac), BUT I WANNA SAY THINGS HERE BECAUSE APPRECIATION CAN’T WAIT THAT LONG!
Also Merry Christmas! It’s midnight when I’m writing this, so ‘tis the day of caroling and festivities and woah. Or happy holidays if you don’t celebrate!
Back to the Our Cinderella topic, I have only played Genzou’s route as of now (I’m sure that’s hardly surprising, he is my fav), but the others are next. Their time is coming. They cannot escape. SO SPOILERS FOR GENZOU’S ROUTE!
First off, I saw you included the little dancing in front of TV Iggy pose and the joy I felt seeing it was off the charts. I kept bringing it up, I was very happy. And seeing Iggy moving about was really cool in general, even without the novelty of seeing a suggestion I made exist in the game.
NEXT UP! Genzou drunk singing is an image I didn’t know I needed, thank you for the visual and the brain food. BUT ALSO I HAVE BEEN CONNECTING JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR SONGS TO OW FOR SO LONG AND HEARING THE MUSICAL BE MENTIONED BY GENZOU THREW ME FOR A LOOP. Great musical, very nice. Last Supper reminds me of Genzou and Orlam. Judas’s voice in general reminds me of Orlam. Musicals and OW can further connect in my brain hobby drawer.
The text interactions in general were really funny, actually. I liked the absolute chaos that was Iggy and Genzou’s text conversations, I was laughing while trying to read a lot of the time. I remember the aforementioned drunk singing conversation and the puddle one both got me pretty good while I was reading, and it was overall fun to see more lighthearted conversations from the characters, even if it’s in a different universe from the main canon.
To end things off, ‘cause again 1) I haven’t finished all the game’s routes yet, and 2) you’ll be able to hear my thoughts in the moment if you choose in future anyways, I wanna mention the version of Cinderella Bucks tells at the end? I can’t get it out of my head. When I was thinking about the game after having just played it, my mind kept flashing back to CinderJesus. It absolutely decimated my brain function, but in a very fun way. More slice-of-life Bucks, please, she’s peak comedy.
Very fun game, 10/10, very sad I couldn’t buy the Kirby in the first playthrough but it’s on my to-do list, aaaand yeah! Thank you for making this! I loved every minute of it, and I’m really excited to play the remaining routes once my irl festivities are over.
sob this is so sweet! 😭💕 i'm excited to watch your playthrough too -- things are a bit overwhelming in general for me right now as i'm still with my family and doing a bunch of things, but even if i'm unable to find time this week i will for sure watch once i'm back home next week. i'm really happy that you're enjoying it so much already tho ahhhh and that you're finding it so entertaining 🥺
i'm glad you liked the poses i had so much fun with them and also using some of the suggestions to add more! and LMAO JCS is a musical i grew up watching (my parents used to play the original album in the house lol) so i get the songs stuck in my head a lot, hence why it randomly worked its way into this (among many other random silly little references or inspirations from my own life hahaha). that is extremely funny to me 🤣
i'm glad you liked the convos they were the epitome of silly. and also bucks's part hahaha. i was half-worried it would end up being too ridiculous and random for people because it just got so weird in places hahaha
thank you so much for this lovely message and all of your thoughts and for playing the game! 🥺💕 i look forward to watching the playthrough so i can see all of your reactions in real-time lakjdfs

hiii !! i love your jaxverse so much omg.... i adore your joker, hes so perfect, and i love how you write bruce too.. your batjokes fics are just so so amazing and elite and i love them so much ive been so obsessed with reading them 🥺🥺 i basically wanted to ask if you have any recommendations for other batjokes fics i could read while i wait for your updates? :] there are so many to comb through but i would love to find more fics where joker is characterized a similar way as jax.. or even just any batjokes fics you like for any reason would be fine :D i trust your taste above all else atp 😭 sorry if this has been asked before btw!! 🥺
HIIIII THIS HAS MADE ME SO HAPPY YOU HAVE NO IDEA D: thank you beyond all thank yous for being so lovely! it drives me INSANE when i get asks about jaxverse so please don't worry about doubling up: this is only the 2nd time i've ever got an ask about him HERE ARE MY TOP THREE WRITER RECOMMENDATIONS!
distortopia, particularly repetitio est mater studiorum @distort-opia is a level 999 batjokes archivarius who has read damn near every comic about them there is to read. they then artfully weave all of that history into the most fucking banger fics you've ever read in your life! i'm so obsessed with how they usually include a list in the author's notes noting which comics they've referenced and where Dracze, particularly A Serious House @dracze is probably best known for Half Way Across, a direct continuation of The Killing Joke where Joker takes Batman up on his offer to try to rehabilitate him. but MY favourite Dracze fic is this 3-chapter unfinished Beauty & the Beast AU where Batman is the beast & joker is his magically-assigned fated true love 😭 i'm feral and low key have the beginnings of a fanfic for THIS fanfic in my drafts ForDarkIsTheSuede (TheBadgeringWitness), particularly Batman the Telltale Series: The Perseverance Project if you haven't played/watched a playthrough of the batman tts game, especially the enemy within which is the joker-heavy part, PLEASE do, and then PLEASE immediately log onto ao3 and read this series by @fordarkisthesuede. she picks up where the vigilante route finishes up and good god they should just let her make the next game fr. this one's a John Doe/Bruce (or "juce" if you're familiar) and trust me it's so fucking good. so so so fucking good. John Doe is high-key one of my main influences on Jax (along with The Jokester from the Countdown comic run & of course, Joker from The Lego Batman Movie), and she's absolutely fucking NAILED him here. he's so so in character that his dialogue sounds like it could have come straight from the game
i hope these keep you busy and please know that you're SO welcome to reach out off anon! i send jaxverse chapter WIPs to a couple of my best judies from time to time so i can farm them for motivation while i work my office job

Tuesday Again No Problem 4/2/24
I feel like this is one of those weeks where I was extremely busy but accomplished very little...
Listening
Earlier this week I felt compelled to go back and listen to some of the songs by AURORA that were featured in that Sky: Children of the Light concert from a while ago.
youtube
This song in particular is one that I'd love to create a music video for if I had the skill or patience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because I have Rain World on the brain, it brings to mind a slugcat (Survivor and Monk in particular) who are just focused on survival but slowly start to become aware of exactly why the world around them functions the way it does.
Watching
My Well There's Your Problem marathon continues. The most recent episode I listened to was this one about the Y2K Bug:
youtube
(Again, it's kind of cheating for me to put a podcast with slides in the watching section, but I haven't really been watching anything else...)
Reading
Fallow this week.
Playing
I'm back to playing Rain World.
I was putting off beating the Artificer campaign, so I finally said "fuck it", and killed the Scavenger king in a very anticlimactic way by just chucking a singularity bomb at them.
In other news, I started a Hunter playthrough. I'm going to admit up front that I cheated in extra cycles for myself because I know for sure I will not be able to beat the game in under 25. To be honest I kind of wanted to do a relatively normal run where I can take my time and also be a carnivore.
Oh, and I have slugpups unlocked, so I keep finding the little guys everywhere. (They're hard to keep alive, unfortunately...)
My adventures have so far included...
Getting bullied by squidcadas,
Watching vultures beat the shit out of each other,
And witnessing one of the strongest enemies in the game get electrocuted to death right in front of me.
I finally reached Five Pebbles today. I got to him by climbing The Wall by way of Chimney Canopy, which isn't the route I usually take. I also made the (probably foolish) decision to take the long way out and go through his interior to access the Underhang. That might have been a bad idea, but Five Pebbles is one of my favorite areas in the game and I didn't want to miss an opportunity to pass through it. The Underhang sucks, though. If I get too frustrated I might just go back up through the inside (since fast travel isn't available for Hunter).
Making
I haven't made much progress on my crochet projects this week. I am getting close to finishing that granny square tote bag, though. I started the tedious process of weaving in all the loose ends.
Tumblr media
I've also been revising that post I mentioned last week about trying to estimate how big Rain World's iterators are. My initial estimate was WAY too big, I think, and I've been debating even keeping it in the post at all. For the sake of clarity it might be best to delete it, even though I went through the trouble of making some diagrams for it... I'll think about it some more.
In addition, I’m continuing to worldbuild for my iterator OC. I made a rough layout of their facility grounds:
Tumblr media
The idea is that they sit on top of a mountain, where their rain freezes into several glaciers which flow down to the base. At the base are twelve dams which collect the water, arranged like a big clock.
This “clock” is broken up into six sectors which serve different functions, and have analogues to the regions from the game (noted above in parentheses). I’d like to make a more polished map, maybe some time in the future.
I also posted some doodles the other day (featuring the same OC being smacked in the face)
Tumblr media
--
This coming week, I'm traveling to the path of totality for the April 8th solar eclipse. Because I'll be traveling, I can't imagine I'll have much to report in terms of the Tuesdaypost, but I guess we'll see.

𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 Video games are one of Jericho’s favorite things, so he’s more than happy to share that joy with you!
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 Whether it’s you watching him play, him watching you play, or playing something together, he’s just happy to hang out with you!
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 When you’re watching him play, he can tend to get in the zone and not talk much, but that doesn’t mean he’s ignoring you. He insists that you make the experience better, even if you’re not speaking much.
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 Most of his solo playthroughs are speedruns, and admittedly he does like to show off a bit with how fast he can complete a run. He often has you time him.
“How much was that? 30 seconds? It was a bit slower than I wanted, wanna time me again?”
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 When he beats a record with you, you can always tell how happy he is. Lightly vibrating and thanking you for helping him. And if you compliment him he starts shaking even faster.
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 If you express interest in doing your own speedruns, he’s so happy to tell you all the tips and tricks! He’s the best mentor for it.
“Are you going for an any% or a 100%? The routes are different, I can tell you about it!”
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 He is always so proud of you when you finish a speedrun. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have the best time or if you fumbled something, he’s just so happy to share a hobby with you!
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 Whenever he watches you play games, he does his best to avoid backseating. If you’re having trouble, he asks you if you need help, but he does his best to avoid giving unsolicited advice.
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 Playing co op with him is the best. His favorite kinds of games to do together are ones like Don’t Starve Together or some of the Pikmin games.
“Oh, I have Pikmin 4, there’s a co op campaign! Wanna play?”
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 If you’re someone who likes playing cozy games like Animal Crossing, Jericho is a surprisingly good player two for it. You’d expect him to want to rush through all the content, but he’s actually super great at cooperating. You’re able to do all the tasks you want to in game, and Jericho will take care of….everything else. It’s honestly great.
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 If you’re the kind of person who just wants to pick flowers in Minecraft while your friend does all the building and mining, he will happily do that!
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 Of course, if you’re also someone who enjoys the grind, then that’s great too! You can do it together, and things have never been more efficient with the two of you working together.
“Do you need more wood? I can get more for you, just give me a few.”
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 And of course, no game night is complete without party games. Sometimes he’ll invite the other prison gang members over for a game night. It’s a little chaotic, but it’s fun!
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 Jericho loves Just Dance, but never wins because he moves so fast that the game doesn’t register any of his movements.
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 Also, even when he’s wearing the wii remote strap, it sometimes phases through his wrist which has resulted in many a broken TV.
“……I can get a new one?”
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 Jericho is also the major peacekeeper during game nights. Mostly because Slim is trying to choke Ramsey after he stole one of his stars in Mario party.
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 He’s never a sore loser, because he’s just here to have fun. He’s seriously the sweetest, always smiling and congratulating his friends.
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 Jericho is also really into parallel play. Even if the two of you are just playing your own games separately, not saying much, it’s a bonding experience to him and he loves it a lot.
“I like being able to do this with you. I have a lot of fun with you, I’ve told you that, right?”
𓆩ꨄ︎𓆪 Overall, he is such a sweetie and the greatest player two anybody could ask for.

(Same anon) Oh yeah, I’m DEFINITELY with you on the whole four playthroughs of the game suckkkkkkkk angle. My controversial 3H opinion is that I just tell people to play the BL route and maaaaaaybe GD after but really they can get the same experience from watching all the cutscenes on YouTube. lol. I do genuinely have extremely fond memories of my first ever playthrough of 3H which I think in part is because of the route I chose (BL. I won’t pretend I’m not biased lol) that keeps you in the dark about a lot of story elements and makes you wonder. Which I found genuinely intriguing when revealed in the other routes but the execution definitely left something to be desired…
Really I think 3H is a tragic case of ambitions too great for the modern video game industry release date grind. It had so much potential and I will gladly hold its fragile skeleton close even if others want something with a bit more meat on its bones, even if much smaller in scale. I often wonder what we could’ve gotten if the game had another year in the oven but then I wonder that about most games that come out nowadays LOL.
Anon
Lemme tell you a secret
I also played BL first and it's the one route I still kind of have fond feelings for. 😔
I agree with you on all of this and perhaps my feelings on the game are just really intense because, like you, after finishing BL I was really looking forward to all of those secrets being revealed. Instead of there being this big puzzle to complete though, the game just ends up feeling like a bunch of individual puzzle pieces that don't fit together.
And to top it off I just didn't find the game to be that fun to play. I played it 4 times because I was so looking forward to that puzzle coming together and my hopes were dashed. I was let down. 😔
I do think there was an element of rushing to get the game out, but I also get the distinct feeling that the writers lost the plot/forgot what point they wanted to make. It feels like the writers ended up being more concerned with making sure the player always feels like they made the right choice than they were with committing to any greater themes or ideas. (Maybe a drawback of banking SO HARD on the dating sim elements??)
I do want to say though, BL was the route I enjoyed the most but I don't think that even my least favorite route was really that much worse than the others. I suspect that my dislike of my "worst" route was literally just because it was the last one I played. Like I said before, I enjoyed the game less and less the more I played it.

G5 Iguazu vs Cinder. One Casts The Die While the other doesnt...
So. I just recently finished up Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, amazing game by the way~! Well there was one villain that just came to mind when one of the characters from AC6 stood out to me the most and how I realized that he was more like another CERTAIN character from RWBY but written a lot better.
Now before we begin!
Warning! There will be Spoilers for Armored Core 6's True Ending Path! If you have not played AC6 or watched a playthrough of it PLEASE LEAVE THIS POST NOW.
1. Backstory
So we might as well get the bullshit out the way for Cinder's past. Basically she was a random orphan that was picked up by some random ass hotel and was abused by the proprietress and her two daughters that look like they got rejected from the Shining. However, Cinder would find comfort in a Huntsman who would train her and even show care for her like an actual father figure. To which Cinder would put in an application to one of the academies in Remnant.
But the two Shining rejects basically end up finding out....somehow and burns her application which pisses Cinder off as she kills both of them and the proprietress of the hotel.... and thats it? I mean we dont see how she is later on adopted by Salem.... we dont see anything else... I mean. For fucks sake... this is why RT needs to put more effort in this shit. Like I get it you have to do fairytale allusions but if you're doing a twisted version of it atleast make it more twisted than going the generic "Cinderella" route.
Now onto G5 Iguazu. Oh and fun fact. Iguazu's name actually comes from the Iguazu River in Brazil and Argentina! Anyways, Iguazu was once a backstreet gambler always betting big and trying to go for anything that would go his way. However, he would usually bet big and lose, which he consistently did until his misfortune landed him in debt which he had to undergo generation 4 surgery making him part of the C4 Augmented human series. Which he would pilot an AC making him part of Balam Industries, Redguns which is commanded by G1 Michigan.
However, Iguazu being a prideful little shit, would try to fight Michigan but would lose.... like LOSE BADLY. Which ended up permanently disfiguring him. However he would find camraderie in the Redguns through Volta as both sported beetles on their AC's (Armored Cores) and would even have quarrels sometimes..... But the two seemingly made a pact with eachother to punch the crap out of Michigan and leave the Redguns to go where the wind will take them.
Now with Cinder and Iguazu it is kind of understandable where both came from. Both had shitty upbringings but, one of them was trying to bet big in order to win (Which will play A HUGE part later on in Armored Core 6's story) and Cinder just had the worst luck ever and could not find her freedom leaving one shitty family to enter in another.
Now while not much is known about Iguazu's upbringing but by the means of a backstreet gambler, I can only assume that he lived in a place that was in poverty (judging by how the Armored Core franchise is mostly but dystopian) and the only way he could escape it was by gambling.
For Cinder it was to escape her abuse only to be once again sent to another place to face abuse... but with merits.... thus do we enter their motivations.
2. Motivation *Cue the Vergil Voice!*
Cinders motivation is pretty simple, she want power. Thats it. Power to stand above those who stood above her. Even made worse with how she is 0-2 in getting Maiden powers just like a Cleveland Browns 0-16 record back in 2018(?) Even how though she "tries" her motivation is just waaaay too simplistic man. Like I get it. You want power so you can be all powerful just like what Salem said yadda yadda-fuckin' yadda.
Instead, Cinder keeps getting bodied and tricked up and even she got owned by Watts for her stupidity and willingness to NOT LEARN and use strategy! Like seriously how you just gonna be a villain that I feared in Volume one and become the most cheapskate wannabe Vegeta that I know!
Now for Iguazu, his is kind of simple but it is VERY well done. Both 621-Raven (Basically you) and him are both Generation Four Augmented Humans. You would think he would be a bit excited or interested in 621, but no. He's not simply calling him some freelancer that would get blown away immediately.
Instead, this would earn Michigans ire and even as 621 exceeds Michigans praise and honor. Which would make Iguazu pissed off that some independant merc got more praise than Iguazu the same person who fought Michigan and lost. Which would become a recurring theme later on in New Game++
However.... we dont see him until the Ice Worm mission because when we climb the wall during the mission briefing we find out thatG4 Volta died. And his final words were all but depressing.
Tumblr media
Volta wanted Iguazu to change and listen to Michigan and its true. Michigan does care about his soldiers and despite his Drill Sergeant attitude towards the Redguns, he really does care about them. I can only imagine the sorrow and the anguish, Iguazu felt knowing his only friend in the Redguns had died....in combat and when he even teased 621 about being the first to climb the Wall in the mission Operation Wallclimber.
Only for him to lose a dear friend and partner in crime, I can only imagine him getting pissed off and now having a motivation to try and beat Raven (NOT RWBY's RAVEN!). Yet, him being a little shit as always he would end up stating how he wont participate in the Ice Worm mission only to be nominated. and if you hit the shot with stun cannon on the Coral Weapon...
Iguazu is left in shock and awe...but this does not last forever as he is taken down FIRST and adding salt to the wound he would made fun of by V.II Snail and Michigan, while Raven would take down the Ice Worm
Raven, an augmented human from the same Generation as Iguazu was, hit something harder than what he can hit. This only added fuel to the fire (Ha get it....since the title is Fires of Rubicon..... ahaha. Screw you Im funny....) as when you are exploring the depths of Watchpoint Alpha you get a final encounter with him...and beat the crap out of him but. He makes some interesting points.
That he is just being laughed at for his failures and how he wonders why Raven is more special than he is. But behind his jealousy and vitriol is someone who wants to shine as bright as Raven as they are just carrying out orders.
However his inferiority complex and pride would lead to his final defeat. To which it is solidified in the mission Intercept The Redguns that he would desert the Redguns and is possibly killed offscreen by Arquebus.... which would continue in the New game+ route until hitting the Alea Iacta Est Route... is where we see some differences in Iguazu and the payout for these two characters.
3. Payout *KACHING!*
Cinders Payout was definitely her getting the powers of the Fall Maiden, via Volume 3. Now you would expect her to become the biggest threat in Volume 4....nope. It was bit of her learning how to train with those powers. Which is understandable you have a new power that you need train and get more familiar with now that you have it at its maximum output. In Volume 5.....ahh.. you know what time it is. DJ! Play the music please!
youtube
Cinder ends up getting her shit rocked!!! Not once by Raven, but even is made into a STRAIGHT BITCH by the Winter Maiden who was about to pass away and then into Ruby following up with a Silver Eyes blast and then in Volume 8 she gets ROCKED AGAIN by Penny!!!
Like this is just embarassing and only for Watts to tell it straight to her face like: "Bitch you AINT SHIT!" holy fuck some RWBY stans expect me to feel bad for her. I DONT. cause once again Volume 1 I expected her to be queen badass here. Only to be made Queen of gettin' packed up! GOT PACKED UP SO DAMN MUCH THAT THE ONLY WAY SHE WAS ABLE TO "Win" was to have Neo do all the heavy lifting for her and when she finally was needing to throw her die.... and yes she did "win" but to me she took her chance to gamble and it failed. I do agree with many people and I wish Salem killed or possibly tortured Cinder right there and then for her wasting the last question on petty vengeance rather than taking a strategic standpoint.....
Yet she rolled the die and "won" but in reality lost.
Now... with Iguazu it takes a dark dark turn. By the time you are exploring Watchpoint Alpha, you come across the boss room where you are supposed to fight Iguazu only to find it littered with destroyed MT's and one of which holds an archive log....
And it is revealed that IGUAZU WENT AS FAR AS TO HIRE AN ASSASSIN AFTER YOU BACKSTABBED HIM AT THE DAM , BODIED HIM DURING A SECRET DATA BREACH, FLAUNTED AGAINST THE ICE WORM IN STYLE BY THE WAY.
only for this man to literally call you at saying that I should have went easier on the poor lad , which you didnt. You basically gained fame as an independent mercenary after climbing the wall in turn was a jab at Iguazu's pride which was only becoming more and more fragile by the second. Especially with the insults being shot at him by his commander and other Redguns.. something was about TO SNAP.
And when we finally beat him during an alternate mission of Reach the Coral Convergence.... and reach the final boss of the Alea Iacta Est ending......
Iguazu Casts The Die....and decides to make one LAST gamble.
Tumblr media
Iguazu.. in a desperate and insane need to restore his pride. Sacrifices his humanity to Allmind and becomes one with the very machine..... and actually puts up an INCREDIBLE fight. Even so during the second phase....
Tumblr media
Iguazu goes balls to walls crazy! Even in some cut lines that those C-Weapons are also being piloted by him because of his hatred and how salty he is that the Coral (the sentient fuel) resonates with him! (due to how Armored Cores own orbits also need to be piloted by the AC pilot as well!)
Yet even with all that power, he still cannot kill Raven because he gets outclassed by them and even better is how his AC in the second phase has "wings" when he is flying meaning that he is also flying on "Borrowed Wings" unlike Raven who had to prove himself to the predecessor to claim that name.
And even to the point where ALLMIND calls Iguazu a mistake and Irregular.... which sets him off EVEN MORE, and when he is finally defeated...
He simply admits he always envied Raven... a freelancer who had all the skills and weapons necessary to outclass him and in the Japanese dub.
Iguazu begrudgingly ADMIRED Raven. Going to show that he actually did have a soft spot for Raven even if he didnt want to admit it. Because Raven was brave enough to face off against all odds and come out of it either unscathed or on the verge of defeat. Even how Iguazu during the final bits of health you have states that "This is where that grit of yours comes in"
Which Iguazu admits defeat and passes away peacefully while ALLMIND states one last time about their plan for Coral Release..... that finally Iguazu is at peace...
Thats why I think Iguazu was a better villain than Cinder. Even with many AC6 fans being surprised with Iguazu being the FINAL BOSS of the true ending rather than ALLMIND. His pride, his backstory, and his motivation all outclasses Cinders....
Because whenever we think of Cinder we think about her drive to be powerful and to stand above all else. While for Iguazu it is a need to prove on why he is strong and going as far as to hire an assassin, fight Raven four whole times, and still be outclassed only to admit defeat and attempt one final attack only for it to blow up in his face....
Gun Five Iguazu is a definition of a Tragic Villain done right... and there is enough evidence supporting this as well.

Now I know that I may have made some mistakes in this and if I did please let me know and the two videos I linked above this does a much better job explaining this than I did. Anywho... get in that AC pilot... and I'll show you how to pilot it and cross the Rubicon.

3, 11, 13 and 14 for the Fire Emblem ask game?
3. What titles have you played? So far I've only been able to play the newest titles, Awakening, Fates, Echoes, Three Houses (and it's Warriors spinoff), and Engage, although I've technically played the DS Shadow Dragon remake via an emulator bc my DS copy got sold but I just uh, got bored and have never finished it. Also playing FE on a computer emulator's a...really weird experience and I prefer using a console, so I've had a hard time getting into the older games (although I did read the entire script for Path of Radiance and part of Radiant Dawn, and one of these days I'll watch playthroughs of both games if IntSys doesn't remake them or port them to a system I actually have).
11. A character that deserved better? Oh where to start. I feel like a lot of the Fates cast suffered in the characterization department bc there were so many characters and the writing team got stretched way thin, and so there's a lot of playable characters that get ignored by both IntSys and the fandom who I think are a delight if people would just look past their joke trait for five seconds, but for unplayable characters I think Lilith could have benefited from more attention bc she's very cool but there's so much going on in Fates that she's kinda...sidelined too. (Also I have a Lot of thoughts about Ikona as a character despite her being very dead, never getting a design, and barely having any story significance, but that's probably more a me thing).
For Echoes definitely Faye (rip) bc damn if the writers and fans didn't do her dirty. Like Fates, we'd be here all day if I listed every grievance I had about every 3H character, but my guy Cyril deserves the world and not the treatment he got from the writers (mostly for the spinoff) and especially not from fans. For Engage, which I am fairly happy with overall, well...Marni, you would have loved Alear's giant friend-family-group if only the writers loved you as much as I (and a few other fans) do.
13. What do you like most about Fire Emblem? Oooh, there's a lot, I mean I keep coming back to the series for a reason, right? I really enjoy the overall gameplay but especially some of the weird mechanics that make it so I can do wild things every playthrough despite usually sticking to similar strategies overall. Narratively I love, love, love the characters and especially the supports, there's always such a wide variety. It's also really neat to see the art style change every few games bc it means there's never really one "look" to FE (even if I'm way biased bc Hidari has been my favorite lead illustrator so far; I really do enjoy seeing all the different art styles, it's so fun). Also the music is always excellent, and I've actually quite enjoyed the full voice acting the past few games
14. Something you really don't like about this series? The fandom. I mean, okay, yes there's lots of things I could complain about for the games themselves (I'm not fond of the loli dragons as a visual design trope, I think a lot of the fantasy racism is handled in poor taste, I'm not a huge fan of the split-routes as a gameplay or story mechanic, the gender-locked classes are so stupid to me, etc. etc.), but like? Honestly more so over the past few years than when I first got into FE, the fandom's been a really exhausting experience bc any problematic tropes that get used in the narrative are nothing compared to the actual issues I've come across in the fandom (i.e. some fans are racist--and specifically antisemetic--towards other fans over these fictional characters, and honestly I think real live people getting harassed over some fiction media is way scarier than the issues of race being handled poorly by the writers).
Like, yes I still haunt the FE tag bc I have half the fandom here blocked, but it's exhausting to have to keep updating my blocklist after so many years. Anytime I talk to someone in-person about FE I always add the "but listen the online fandom sucks, so maybe avoid it". Like, sure the fandom's not as toxic as what I've heard about some other games, but damn.
Not to say the fandom's all bad--I never would have found your blog if not for FE, and there are so many fans who are chill and fun, and I love seeing all the fanart and headcanons and theories and other fun things, and I do enjoy reading a good critical analysis when I can find one too as well as just general analyses like when people look at the Buddhist themes in the games or the recurring narrative themes (brings me back to reading research papers in college if they're written a certain way), and I still love making my own art stuff for FE and coming up with my own silly headcanons and theories and analyses. Because despite everything my experiences with the negative side of the fandom have somehow, miraculously, not withered my deep love of the characters and series overall. So like, there is a lot of good here too, and I try not to focus so much on the negative aspects of things I enjoy bc it doesn't do anything for me. But sometimes I am Very Tired, y'know?
