bestie (nicest way possible) as someone who was new to the fandom last September I wouldn’t recommend making a sideblog and like talking about comics/batfam/etc if you haven’t read the comics? people get really touchy about that, because fanfic interpretation tend to be really far from how characters are in canon (and character relationships get butchered and softened and straight up invented for plot, which once again, creative liberty + that can be fun but often tends to be incredibly ooc & excludes women (cass, helena, steph, etc) or poc (duke (though his case is different considering when he was introduced), cass, damian’s poc but isn’t really ignored) in favor of white boys (jason especially, who shows up far later than said women & isn’t really close to the fam yet fandom tends to give him their relationships with the family) so like...you’ll probably be mostly wrong and people are rather unforgiving about that because they’re tired of people that haven’t read comics talking about the characters (incorrectly) while refusing to interact w/ source material, and it’s a huge problem & very prevalent so I can’t really blame them? idk I just don’t think it’s a good idea unless you want to reblog just art and stuff, which is fine! but like...everything's really confusing w/out proper research if you want to get into the fandom (everything post-reboot/post-2011 is largely ignored unless said otherwise because the reboot was so awful), so i just want to point that out! but I don’t want to be mean, just some advice :) (if you ever change your mind about comics, just give the say so! we’re (and i) am very glad to help you out with what to read and in what order, and take it from someone who was in your position six months ago, they are truly really fun!) /gen /nm
not to worry my friend this sounds pretty much exactly like the dsmp experience where new people never properly interacted with the canon content and the fanon got more and more bastardized over time as a result and everyone got touchy abt it. including me . you could say im familiar . im just on the other side now (oblivious newbie) which should be interesting. i have no intention of treading on anyone’s toes or making assumptions or even talking abt the characters with any sort of authority. if i do make a sideblog it’ll be just to reblog art n stuff.
plus i am ah. very aware that the fanon im consuming is an extremely warped perspective of the actual comics. and with how many different “canons” there are i’m sure it’s a mess. at least in dsmp we could always point back to just the og streams. here i’m gathering there’s 174958637 comics + 284871 writers + movies + live action AND animated tv shows + multiple video games and they ALL have intersecting characters and possible canons it’s giving me a headache just thinking abt it dear lord
so yeah. i’m perfectly happy sequestering myself in an oblivious fanon corner and not claiming to know anything. normally for a new fandom i would seek out the full source material and examine it thoroughly but theres just. too much. and i also just don’t enjoy reading comics. at least not the superhero ones. (i think the art doesn’t appeal to me? and something about the combination of written word and still visual art like. rankles at my sense of pacing and story <- just guessing though) i did watch the under the red hood movie tjough and it was cool so i may do more of those!
i’m glad you said you like talking abt this cause i just wrote you a whole essay lol. if i may ask do you know of any good fanon/fanfic content i could check out that stays mostly true to the comics canon? i’m curious ! but regardless thank you for the very nice message and warning it’s appreciated mwah

Okay so this is genuinely just me screaming into the void, no tags, just word vomit.
So like- I’ve been in the wheel of time fandom for not a super long time, I only finished reading the series itself recently actually, though that was mostly because I procrastinated finish memory of light months lol- the point is, I haven’t been here that long but the experience of being in this fandom has already been a vast improvement from my previous one.
I was in Dream SMP fandom for like, three or four years, because covid and my adhd brain decided Tommyinnit was a serotonin machine. I only really watched a few of the creators on the SMP, and wasn’t really involved in the more- intense parts of the fandom. I enjoyed the fanart, the fan music and the lore discussions. It was genuinely a very good time. But I’ve realized recently just his utterly exhausting and stressful having been hyper fixated and invested in the fandom it was. I didn’t even watch Dream, the majority of the creators I watched weren’t even really ever involved in most drama, I mean some of them rarely if at all interacted with Dream. Yet anytime he got cancelled it would seep into every inch of the fandom and suddenly my feed despite my best efforts to curate would be absolutely unbearable for days on end. I don’t have Twitter, tumblr is really the only social media I use and I was never super involved in the negative aspects so while I never experienced this myself I saw plenty of it. Death threats, doxxing and just generally incredibly unpleasant behavior from people inside the fandom and out. I STILL get anxious mentioning the fact that I like the Sorry Boys and LoveJoy lest someone accuses me of being a Dream stan of all things. Not because I have any strong feelings about Dream, because I don’t. I never cared about the guy, but everything he did somehow reflected on everyone. This weird “guilty by association” thing.
My interest steadily waned as a got into Wheel of Time and then the SMP ended and I stopped participating in the fandom now fully invested in WoT. Some of the creators I still watch and like but I’m no longer invested. And something I noticed was how much less stressful it’s been. Maybe it’s just because I’m on tumblr but everyone has been so kind and the worst discourse I’ve seen is about whether or not the show is good which is a vastly different vibe then the near constant vitriol that proliferated the DSMP fandom. Maybe it’s because the fandoms older, or maybe it’s just because I’m on tumblr only but I’ve really enjoyed the interactions and conversations I’ve had since joining the fandom. And when I tell you the relief I felt when Dream got himself cancelled again and I didn’t feel a pit in my stomach because it’s no longer relevant to me. Bliss. Pure bliss. It is well and truly, not my circus not my monkeys.

c!crimeboys makes me feel things :(
here is my understanding/characterization of c!crimeboys relationship in lore. im going to preface here that i am in no way saying that c!crimeboys have a healthy relationship, or that c!wilbur is entirely a good person. i’m not saying he’s completely evil either.
c!crimeboys will always love each other, no matter what, and that is the tragedy. they aren’t good for each other, and it would have been best if they split when things went sour, but they can’t. they won’t. their love (platonic you freaks) for each other will always be a constant, forever tying them together.
however, their care for each other will vary. in early l’manburg times, they cared and loved each other quite a bit (i recognize the whole child solider thing. i believe that the concept of child soldiers being bad is not a concept in dsmp society. no one else questioned it, so why should c!wilbur? he did not realize the harm). then, in pogtopia, things went bad. as c!wilbur began to spiral, his care for c!tommy’s well being decreased, up until the end (where he wanted him to die with him). but he loved him. he still loved c!tommy, they were brothers. he just didn’t really care about him.
c!tommy, on the other hand in pogtopia, cared for c!wilbur up until the end. he became increasingly wary of c!wilbur, but he still cared. he had his moments, of course, where he didn’t care for c!wilbur as much, but he cared. quite a bit. he loved him, and at this point, c!tommy cared just as much. (it’s why he was so devastated when c!wilbur died.)
in limbo, c!wilbur cared for c!tommy a bit. in the beginning, mostly, the first couple of years in that train station, he cared for c!tommy. he hoped he was okay. he wanted him to be okay. he hoped he had a good life. but that started to dwindle, as the months piled up. he started becoming incredibly apathetic. by the time c!tommy died and visited c!wilbur in limbo, c!wilbur did not care for him at all. he did not give a shit that his little brother just got brutally beaten to death.
during exile/ghostbur times, c!tommy cared for c!wilbur very little. he cared for ghostbur, sure, but c!wilbur? he was resentful and tired and didn’t really think much about how he would be fairing in afterlife. he thought he would be happy, but he didn’t really care, because he had bigger things to deal with. and then, during the worst of exile, he would feel horribly guilty for not caring about c!wilbur.
and then in the early resurrection period, neither of them cared for each other that much. c!wilbur cared more than he did at the end of pogtopia, but not that much. not enough to ensure that he wasn’t accidentally hurting c!tommy. c!tommy cared a bit, enough to make sure that c!wilbur wasn’t going to spiral again, but he didn’t care about the minor things, the lesser things.
and then, as they healed, their care for each other began to grow again. c!wilbur did keep hurting c!tommy, but he didn’t necessarily realize it, and if he did, i believe he felt guilty and/or bad about it later on. c!tommy, now knowing not to trust c!wilbur, he was very wary on how much he let himself care for c!wilbur. by the time c!tommy opened up about exile, c!wilbur cared about him the most that he had in a while- almost late l’manburgian levels. and during boundless sands, he realized that if he truly cared for c!tommy’s well being and safety, he needed to let go. he was the problem, or at least a big part of it. it would hurt, yes, and c!tommy wouldn’t do so well in the beginning, but once he moved on, it would get better. c!tommy would be better than he ever could be with c!wilbur there. what c!wilbur didn’t realize, though, was that the period of not moving on could have worse consequences than just a bout of depression.
anyway that’s my rambling analysis. i haven’t actually watched too many lore streams so forgive me if i get things horribly wrong lol.

oh em gee i think you finally let me put my finger on why i have less passion for it all now
i loved that practice server and I'm sorry but i hate mcc island (too overwhelming with noise and people, snipers annoy me, games take too long and are too different, no pkt, pkw or dogebolt)
i really loved all the different creators joining in random groups, practicing against each other and the leaderboard competitions, just seeing people idling on it. But mcci has effectively taken all that away - no random groups of people just happening to be playing together, no fun bets or competitions to beat a leaderboard, and no excitement at seeing it get busier and busier before the event as everyone hangs out more in wait of it - I really miss that!
mcci looks like fun, but I miss the cc's all hanging out on each other's stream on the practice server :(
hard agree actually which is funny because i was so excited for mcci when it was announced. i actually got my admission ticket about two months ago and haven’t logged on yet despite the fact i used to want to play it so bad to the extent where i was too jealous to watch streamers play it LOL
i hate stream snipers with a passion tbh. it’s why i have never really enjoyed bedwars streams unless it’s a tired twt closed lobby. i don’t care if they’re “nice” snipers it truly takes all the fun out of the gameplay for me. i think if mcci implements a good system for closed games (if they have one im sorry i didnt know LOL) there might be able to be a bit more practice that just consists of mcc participants and maybe other creators that aren’t in mcc but want to participate. like well i guess he’s not a creator but i always wished callahan could play with them and he would be able to on mcci, but it’s not as interesting to me if they’re playing against stream snipers.
i think mcci serves a different purpose for them than the practice server. like they’re partially largely different games and different people playing them. mcci is for everyone but the practice server will always be catered to them specifically. but i also don’t think they’ll put much into the practice server now that mcci is up and running because mcci is their revenue source (which is fair ig just sad for me as a viewer lol). like the privacy of the practice server gave it a similar appeal to the dsmp or hermitcraft in some ways even though it’s not a survival server. like it’s a place to practice and grind out the ace race leaderboard but it was also just a place to hang out and it’s easier to hang out in a server with a hundred people than one with several thousand

I feel really stupid about this, but I don’t feel comfortable talking to anyone irl about it so here’s a vent lol

I’ve never lost someone like this. Which is pretty silly, considering I’ve had actual family members pass away and now I’m griving a man I didn’t even know. But. All the family members I’ve lost have been very old people who have been sick for as long as I remember, and not a single one was someone I was close with. None of them were people that could bring me comfort when I’m sad or I could depend on to make me laugh. They were basically strangers who I knew shared my blood. This time, I’m also griving a stranger. But this stranger managed to make me so happy so many times. I didn’t even watch his solo content that often, but I knew that when I did, or when I saw him in someone else’s content he always made me laugh. I fucking loved his sense of humor (at least, the sense of humor he allowed us to see) and his stupid greek mythology references that were actually super fucking fitting and shocked me every time because how did I not make that conextion???
I remeber when he first told us about the cancer, and I was concerned, of course I was, no one wants someone they care about (even if it’s a parasocial thing) to be sick, but I didn’t for a minute consider the possibility that he wouldn’t be okay. It just was absolutely ridiculous in my head, that that could happen to him. I don’t think we ever fully believe this kinda stuff is gonna happen to people we care about until it does.
It still doesn’t feel real.
If his death is affecting this many people who were just fans of his content, I can’t imagine how hard it must be rn for his family and friends.
I can’t help but be grateful for past me, who watched the Jailbreak stream live months ago, even though at that point I had no idea what was happening on the lore, hadn’t been watching streams, and haven’t watched any lore streams since. I think I’d be regreting it now if I hadn’t.
I’m glad that was my last memory of the dsmp. I’m glad we have so many videos and vods to look back on, when we want to hear his voice, even if I want to cry every time I remeber we’ll never hear it again.
I can’t remember they’re @, but someone on twt mentioned how we’re lucky, because we got to live at the same time as Techno. I definitely feel lucky, for having being able to have been a fan while he was still making content, even if just for a few months. He touched the lives of so many people, and I’m so grateful to have been one of them. Rest in peace king, your memory is gonna live on.
PS: to end on a less depressing note, remeber that Techno is probably laughing his ass off in the afterlife (if it exists) watching us being all sad about this, and buy his merch!!!!!

The idea that htlgi!reader & corpse have lowkey adopted half of the clingy duo each is delightful because all I can think is considering their online personas

I firmly believe the reader does not have an alt twitter account. It's because they're from the era of the internet where it was kind of all or nothing, but also their pinned tweet "no alt accounts you WILL read my 2am rants about cheese and them watch me self promo in the next tweet with no middle ground we die like men" (I love the chaotic stupid htlgi reader)
But back to reader & tubbo, can you IMAGINE how hard they'd hype that kid up after hearing Life By The Sea???? THEY'D BE SO PROUD!!! Absolutely on the STREAM LIFE BY THE SEA train.
Also, we've established that Corpse and Reader teaming up in games is terrifyingly competent or chaotic stupid, but if Reader and Tubbo were ever teamed up they would probably be absolutely unstoppable. Like the reader is v protective of anyone younger than them, especially teenagers because they know what it's like to be online and in the spotlight at that age, but teaming up with Tommy or Ranboo for games isn't the same as it is with tubbo. Reader works well with them and there's good BantzTM but I feel like with tubbo, and yes I'm projecting here, the reader unlocks like, a new level of competency from Sudden Onset Opposite Cain Instinct. The reader doesn't really play enough minecraft to be considered for MCC, but there's a joke that surfaces after a few streams with Reader and Tubbo on the same team for various games, that if the reader was teamed with tubbo for MCC they would somehow win out of spite.
But also I love the idea of the reader being their friends' biggest hypeman. Unashamedly supportive on every platform, incredibly outspoken. YouTubers and traditional celebrities alike.

Reader is peak "pure of heart, dumb of ass" when they want to be. They play up some of it, as it's almost always been a part of their persona when they're not actively spiralling. But also they're not Stupid; chaotic is often mistaken for being stupid, but they're smart enough to have gotten where they are.
The reader casually and precisely tearing apart and disproving malicious rumours about their friends on stream without looking away from whatever game they're playing. offhandedly alluding to the fact that they havea scarily detailed understanding of how and why their friends are successful, both from a YouTube and a general entertainment industry standpoint. Hearing their friends in an Among Us lobby talking about old YouTube trends from around 2013, and the reader going quiet as they start talking about a very specific one that everyone else nostalgically remembers watching, and the reader quietly pipes up "I started that one" and the way every else remembers at the same time that theyre Old YouTube Famous, like "I've been on this site longer than Markiplier, only by a month and a half but still" Old YouTube Famous, "I've forgotten more collabs that I've been in than you have had collabs" Old YouTube Famous.

MCC Etiquette
So, mcc is returning! there are going to be more fans than ever watching, and many people here haven’t seen one live. for the most part, mcc has been very nontoxic and wholesome to watch, but there have been a few issues, so here are some things to keep in mind:
sometimes, people just play worse, or have an off day. if someone is performing poorly, don’t remind them or yell at them in chat. they’re under a lot of pressure here!
while balancers do exist, and some players are objectively better than others, every player is important! someone who might be just the fourth player to you might be someone else’s favorite streamer. be kind!
there are going to be technical issues sometimes! the event is incredibly well run, but there have been and will be mistakes, and it is not the event managers fault. please be gentle.
in a similar vein, scott puts a ton of work into team choices and balancing. I know people want their faves together, or want their streamer to be on a strong team, but balancing has to occur. because of this, groups like the dteam can’t always team because of how strong they are.
a lot of mcc is down to rng, or random game generation. if your team loses due to bad luck, that could just be the tournament working how it’s supposed to! while skilled teams usually make it to the top, when there are so many good teams, someone has to get unlucky.
if you feel like it, try watching a smaller streamer! while a lot of mcc streamers have blown up since, and the tournament has become much more exclusive, don’t be afraid to watch a new perspective
mcc is entirely for fun! there is no prize to be won.

the worst thing about the dsmp not being traditional media is that some people just- will miss things that would normally be considered more obvious. c!wilbur going “lol I never really cared about the land of l’manburg only the ideals” and then staring at the caravan for ten seconds straight wistfully the second he’s alone conveys a message that some people seem to have missed.
like- he did this exact same thing at the festival with niki, how many times does this need to happen before people start catching on that c!wilbur lies to protect his own feelings

I feel like a not currently talked about aspect of the og l’manburg revolution spirit is just what little shits they were compared to the dream team.
like, the dteam had only been streaming for a few months at this point, meaning they were still in that kind of awkward phase of being able to talk on camera but still not great at being very eloquent. compare that to tommy and tubbo’s stupidly high energy levels and wilbur, who composes monologues on the spot, as well as the fact that l’manburg was much more committed to rp, and it makes a notable difference.
you got situations where dream tries to sound cool by saying “oh the dream smp has infinitely more women” which is just, not great wording, and wilbur shitting on him going “I don’t know what dream is doing over there with his infinite women, but”. it was tubbo laughing at the dteam and calling them losers as he tricked them into being stranded thousands of blocks away, and sapnap not understanding pig jokes, and wilbur never needing to yell when he gave speeches because his words spoke for him. this was only compounded by the fact that the dteam didn’t actually stream their perspective too much.
like, the only insult the dteam had in their arsenal was calling it ‘l’manchildburg’, a brilliant moment of word association, but compared to the staying power of ‘suck it green boi”? it was nothing. l’manburgians were the scrappy underdogs who gave out spiderman-like quips, and it was hard not to like them.
when l’manburg said “words over weapons” they fucking meant it, and I miss that aspect of their characterization, because yeah that war traumatized them but also they were so funny.

7. his team in mcc 12 getting four consecutive first placements, meaning everyone on the team was in the top ten at one point (MCC 12)
6. ‘wilbur glitching’ and winning rocket spleef while every other player accused him of cheating because it looked like he was just standing there (MCC 3)
5. killing his own player with tnt in the mcc battle box lobby, forcing the game to be restarted (MCC 7)
4. destroying a toy nerf gun dubbed “the vlog gun” live on the stream by stamping it out while his teammates watched in horror (MCC 8)
3. mcc crashing his computer during ace race and physically kicking his computer with his shoe after the tournament to end the stream (MCC 13)
2. getting “possessed” the day after doing a ghost hunting stream, losing his voice entirely but getting one of his best placements (MCC 11)
1. the fire alarm going off, forcing him to leave for a game while everyone wondered if he was actually dead, only for him to return and say that he couldn’t be told whether or not it was actually a fire (MCC p21)

wilbur soot is an inspiration not because he’s like a famous youtuber or musician or whatever but when I’m older I want to teach kids yoyo tricks and have little ecosystems in jars and buy people ukuleles spontaneously and have friends that stay up until 5 am with me when I’m sick or sing the entirety of hamilton in a new zealand accent or collect ebay sweaters from me. I want to have a dog with a silly name and know too much about geography and go to the beach when I’m sad and take my friends to my favorite arcade for fun. I know he’s going through shit as we all are but man, what a lovely person to be.

DSMP Lore Nov. 28 Liveblog
Right so I’ve spent like… all day in the car because, y’know, visiting family and all that, so I didn’t actually get to watch ANY of these streams live. So I’m just gonna watch Techno’s vod and put this in my queue, so we’ll see how that goes.

Or at least will be by the time this is over.

“There’s a lot of guards in the prison.” There are like two. (Not counting Sam cuz he’s technically the warden). And if I remember my egg lore correctly, those two guards are probably a bit busy nursing their wounds after their murder party failed and they both lost very nearly all hope of ever seeing their husbands again.
Okay, the amount that Techno brings up the “stuck in prison for three months” thing is starting to remind me of that time my sister threw a fork at my eye.

I was not here for Doomsday, or the 16th, or the disc war finale, or any of that. The biggest event I’ve seen is the red banquet. There are like 21 people here. Iirc, a horse’s stats will always be the average of their parents and a third randomly selected set of stats. Or that might just be in bedrock. I only play bedrock so who knows.
Wait. I’m watching the vod. I have all the time in the world. I can just go look this up. One sec.
Yep. I double checked, and I was right. Meaning that if you have two horses with really good stats and you breed them together, the odds are that any offspring will have lower stats than the parents.
Okay, Minecraft horse breeding mechanics aside, let’s get back to the actual stream.
Apollo is holding up the prison break better than a small army probably could.
“And Phil can have the easy job of getting the horses through this all.” Fun fact, the name Phil actually means lover of horses. Why can I remember random facts like this but absolutely nothing for any of my math tests? My life would be so much easier if my memory of like, any stuff I needed to know for school was as good as my memory of random facts I learned while writing fanfiction or whatever.
(Or in this case me trying to combine my special interests in dream smp, mythology, history, dystopian literature, and linguistics to create a whole entire language and history and culture and mythology based entirely on the concept that stories from popular fandoms such as dsmp continue to be passed down in oral tradition even after the apocalypse.)

At this point I would like to make it clear that I absolutely despise c!Dream, but I root for basically everyone else (except Schlatt) depending on who’s stream I’m watching or which thing I’m analyzing or whatever, so rn I’m rooting for Techno. I would just also like c!Dream to die. Ideally painfully and with a certain amount of poetic justice.
See, the issue is that my favorite streamers are like… Techno and Eret, and my favorite characters are like, Techno, Eret, Wilbur, Tubbo, Quackity, Foolish, Bad, Skeppy, and Sapnap (in no particular order), and like… half of them hate each other.
Anyway…
Noooo, Bad’s dead. At least we don’t have to worry about him loosing canon lives or anything. (/gen)

I’ve been alright! I’m at a friend’s house at the moment and it’s nice to see them again! I think it’s literally been months since I went to someone else’s house... O-o We played a board game called Mountains of Madness and it’s rough man. But we won!! And we got a good ending too, that’s pretty wild for our first try hahaha. ^\\\^
I’m also working on like 2 projects at once atm, one’s Kantibar Keep which is the story the OCs I’m making recently are for, and the other is just design stuff I need to settle on. All in all, good times!!

SO some other blog recently liked a post I made back in December 2020 (wack how I’ve finished a whole semester since then innit), so naturally I went to read it because I knew it was almost definitely about the dsmp (again, not tagged though, so I’ve no idea how or why tumblr decided to show it off), and I was interested to see which post it was, exactly. It was my Dec 30 post criticizing Dream’s handling of the fact that he has a large group of young-ish fans hanging on his every word. Before I talk about it (because I’d forgotten about that post actually, but I’ve got a bit more to say now), let me grab something that’s been sitting in my drafts for ages because it was just a random thought at the time, but I think it fits in with the conversation I’m about to have.

If you want a little bit of extra context for this conversation,,,,, I recently reblogged a few posts about the ~speedrun cheating scandal~ (I wasn’t actually following it, but apparently a bunch of stats folk went back and checked the work Dream had done by the professor dude and apparently it was done poorly and apparently Dream recently admitted to some stuff etc.), and apparently, there was a Minecraft minigame tournament recently (I legit haven’t watched a mc tournament since Minecraft Mondays though) and Dream/Sapnap accused some smaller mcyts of cheating in a longform video/stream but told their audience not to send hate (which,,,,,, like,,,,, I’ve got mixed feelings).
1. I don’t want to be known as a ~Dream Critic~. I’ve enjoyed his content, you know, the Manhunts with the 2000 IQ plays or whatever, the DreamSMP as a whole (the evidence of this one is astoundingly clear), the Minecraft But... videos with Sapnap and George. I started a Pinterest board for the dsmp a few months ago and it very quickly grew to become one of my largest boards. That said,, he’s legit just a dude. He’s not infallible, nor is he above critique. I’m not going to just jump on the hype train of disliking/critiquing him because it’s cool now though. Mob mentality is what got us (well, more like y’all, because I didn’t care very much (and I heard Pewd’s commentary on the issue as my first introduction to it, so)) into the initial mess of hating James Charles with the whole Bye Sister thing a few years ago (I mean apparently he’s got other issues so y’all were hating on him for the wrong reason lol). I’ve just got some thoughts. Let me be. If you don’t like word vomits, leave.
2. Again, I think it’s funny how I wrote some unstructured essay in that post and went straight into talking about what I wanted to buy with my Christmas money lol. And somebody actually read it omgggg like this isn’t a blog for unstructured essays it is a godforsaken journal. Seriously, these are not worth reading.
Okay. Into the Good Stuff.
3. I wish I had made a post WAIT I FOUND IT OKAY SO sometime before/around Feb 4, 2021 Dream did a stream where he went picked through some small youtuber’s video and defended the integrity of the Manhunts against the youtuber’s claim that they were scripted. I said in my post back then that I didn’t care whether the manhunts were scripted, but I was obviously uneased by it enough to write that inner white man post that I copy/pasted above.
Now, I’ve got mixed feelings. Very mixed.
No, I don’t care whether the Manhunts are scripted or not, but that’s not the issue. If they are scripted then lying about it for two hours does not look good on Dream. Obviously. But the thing that made me uneasy was how I’d seen a similar thing before where he defended himself against the speedrun mods or against someone who critiqued one of his minecraft mysteries where he had to qualify at the end that he didn’t want his viewers to send hate (frankly, it’s a solid strategic move which should absolve him of any blame for what some renegade viewers might do whether he means it or not tbh).
That Dream/Sapnap stream isn’t even the only thing that’s come up recently, apparently. Apparently Dream had in fact been using a modified version of Minecraft while he did the speedrun which was under scrutiny many many months ago. I can understand how that could be a big deal for people who care about the legitimacy of speedrunning (I do enjoy watching speedrun highlights/commentaries of all sorts of games (I’ve watched a cooking mama one, a wii sports resort golf speedrun analysis (Summoning Salt on YouTube does cool speedrun histories), etc.), and I get how that takes a lot of skill especially for more popular games, so maintaining the integrity of speedrunning is probably a decently-big deal), but like also come on.
But back to the thing I wanted to focus on. Listen, Dream does have the right to defend himself, even against dumb allegations about a video game (that, I suppose, does happen to be his livelihood). Everyone has the right to a response, I just think he’s irresponsible with those responses, and that’s what put the bad taste in my mouth and made me write that tongue-in-cheek joke thing about choosing Dream to be my “whiteman-sona”. He knows he has a huge platform and that he has fans who hang on to his every word. Saying stuff like “oh but guys don’t send them hate” just... isn’t???? ugh. Obviously, some fans will take it upon themselves to be vigilantes on the behalf of a grown man whose content they enjoy. And like, you can’t control what other people do. I recognize that.
(Remember when Haylor was a thing? Back when One Direction was really big and Harry Styles was dating Taylor Swift and I couldn’t care less? Yeah, well, I distinctly remember my timeline on some accursed fanfiction/oc website (no, not Wattpad) being filled to the brim with people teenagers fighting over it. Over the relationship between a grown man and a grown woman which they were not part of? Yeah, it reminds me of that.)
Now, I will touch on tone-policing as well. I’m a black woman. I am often conscious of my tone because I don’t want to make people think of me as loud or ghetto or overbearing or controlling or whatever. So like, yeah, okay, but communication has nuances! I’ve written in this journal at least once about how Words Have Meanings, but Tones Also Have Meanings as well. And you know what? You can call me sensitive, that’s fine. Doesn’t take away from the irresponsibility of what was said in the first place my dudez. However, that is where my mixed feelings come in.
Tone policing can get... weird. Like, you’re going to sound defensive when you’re on defense. I don’t know how fair it is to criticize someone for that? Like, also, Dream is known for being sarcastic. Many people are! As I’ve said, everyone has the right to respond to defend themselves. I don’t want to make it sound like Dream’s responses to ~controversy~ have to be perfect, because they won’t be! Not ever! And that’s okay (or, at least, it should be)!
All in stinking all, he’s just a guy who’s good at a game and he’s making money. And like, People! make! mistakes! Lord knows, Pewdiepie has had his fair share of controversies, and for some reason I still watch his videos regularly? Like, I will be the first to say that one of his apologies (I feel like he made an apology but then brought it up a few times after?) for the Fiver sign guys thing?? Terrible. I remember him saying “who doesn’t know what ‘death to’ means” to deflect the blame from himself. Awful apology. And I don’t agree with a lot of what he says (which, like, I wouldn’t expect to,,,, we come from very different backgrounds and lead very different lives, so that ain’t an issue for me lol)... not to mention the fact that dude said the n-word during a stream?? ...hm. you know,, every time I think critically about why I should stop watching Pewdiepie, I get so close to convincing myself that I really should not be supporting his content. every single time, I swear. (this is way off topic, but maybe it’s a comfort thing? Like, I watched Pewds as a tween play Happy Wheels because it was vulgar and stupid and at that age random = funny (which, frankly, ain’t all that different from the way that “adult” humor ~subverts expectations~). It’s not that I found comfort in the content then, but maybe it makes me feel more secure now because he... reminds me of a time when I felt fairly secure? hm. I’ll have to return to this thought some other time... [edit: hi, quick interjection: yes, people should be held accountable for what they do, but I also think that people should be allowed the space to grow (but am I saying that because I have a bias toward pewds or do I believe that there’s a line before people lose the right to forgiveness or... ugh)])
Alright. I’m getting off track. At this point I’m just saying words so let me wrap it up. [edit: Nina did not, in fact, wrap it up. She instead continued to ramble for many more paragraphs. Strap in, my Dearest Reader, but know that we are soon approaching the end.]
I think Dream has been and continues to be somewhat irresponsible with his audience, and I’m sure he knows not only who his audience is, but what they are capable of as a, well, mob. Like, they’re mostly almost entirely supportive and creative!! But the way that a lot of his explanatory content lowkey weaponizes them,,,,,,,, yeah, that don’t sit right with me. But accountability is hard. (again, makes me want to reevaluate my thoughts on Pewdiepie) I don’t want to be unfair with my criticism especially when a lot of Dream does/says/how he reacts isn’t subject to the same process as a neurotypical person though.
Alright, listen,,,,,,, I’m about to say something, and I really hope it’s not read the wrong way, okay? Just,,, hear me out.

What I’m saying is that Dream has a very loyal fanbase, and he can be against ~toxic stans~ all he wants (great stance to take! but! no one sees themselves as a toxic stan! there are people in the CR community who are (apparently) extremely toxic, especially to certain members of the main cast (I will defend Marisha Ray with my life, and Matt Mercer can say “sigg-le” all he wants if I could ensure she never gets another piece of hate), but they view themselves as helping (same goes for many in some of a few some in Pewd’s audience tbh)), but the question is whether part of the blame for what “toxic stans” do should be placed on him or not (Republican Congressfolk would say no lol). Like I said, people make mistakes and people are allowed to feel upset and express their feelings/thoughts, but when they hold a position of power (I would argue that being an influencer is a position of power, yes), there is a responsibility that comes with that.
But that’s another thing! In many cases you can’t blame someone’s actions on anyone but the person who committed them! That’s how it works, right? We’re human beings with thought processes and whatnot who should be old enough to make our own decisions at a certain age. It’s just that, like,,,,,, many of his fans are youngish. And Dream’s persona is charming (frankly, people who are good at something are easy to follow and root for even if they may not be good people otherwise; we know this from movies and tv).
Anyway, if you’ll recall, I’m trying (hard) to pay no mind to what don’t pay me, it was just that someone so happened to like a post I made which reminded me of a few thoughts I’ve had over the past few months. Dream’s content is fun and he’s not out here doin nothin illegal that I know of, so, idk. Let the man play his dang game and make content for y’all. I suppose, if anything, I feel bad for him. His quick and massive growth thrust him into the harsh, ever-scrutinizing spotlight. He seems bright enough (probably, at least, I mean he was calculating enough to make The Algorithm work for him) to be the type of person to learn from a situation, and I honestly do hope that he’s able to move on past this and continue with his career. His content is fun and it seems like he enjoys what he’s doing.
I don’t think he should be ~cancelled~. We’ve got closure on the speedrun issue now (Though, ConspiracyTheorist!Nina would probably say that in order to give the illusion of closure instead of allowing this to hang for ages to come, big brain Dream could have admitted to something he didn’t do, take the backlash like a champ recognizing that most people will find the news to not be particularly noteworthy (most people might find it annoying that he’s trending again, honestly), and be embraced by the forgiveness of his fans. I do have to wonder, when did he find out about the modification on the speedrun livestreams? How long has he known? I don’t know much about game files, but why didn’t that information show up when he apparently gave the details of his world to the speedrun mods? Do you see what ConspiracyTheorist!Nina is getting at here? Frankly, I don’t really care (I just like sowing the seeds of a little chaos, especially since I’m writing for an audience of exactly one person :3). I’m perfectly willing to take this man at his word. The controversy has gone on for long enough and the speedrun has been removed from the leaderboard for ages anyway!), so can we please move on (I had plans to do a Dream cosplay using my Jester capelet (because it’s otherwise just a black tee and some jeans with idk some Chuck Taylors or something (and I can also use my sword for it!)) and I can’t do that if he’s cancelled :/)? Though I suppose the real question is how many slaps on the wrist for poor responses is too many?
I don’t particularly enjoy, like, discourse over real people? Writing this out was mostly to take a deep dive into my own thoughts, not to influence anyone else’s, by the way.
Listen, the whole celebrity culture thing has always made me uneasy. Not the fact that content creators create content and we laud them for doing it well. That’s chill. It’s the way we treat them/look at them outside of that content that gets the side eye from me. I don’t expect anything from them aside from their content. Even then, idk I try really hard to not objectify people. People deserve to be seen as nuanced (if that’s what they desire) because people do indeed be mULtiFacETeD (*shudders as a (formerly) pretentious honors student in an arts/humanities focused program*)!
God this is another one of those posts which I hope no one reads because it’s incredibly dumb and could get me into a lot of trouble if the wrong people read it and could bring attention to this blog that I don’t want. My identity is pretty thinly veiled on here, if I’m being perfectly honest, and I’d really rather not be d~xxed, thx. UGH could you imagine if something from this started floating around as a copypasta??? I think I’d cry. Problem is, the internet is forever, so even deleting the blog wouldn’t hide me from nobody. One of these days I’m going to have to transfer this journal to a far more secure location where random people can’t read my innermost thoughts, but that would mean archiving/moving almost three years worth of stuff, and that ain’t for me to do today (yes, I do recognize I actively choose not to recognize that this problem will only compound with each passing day).

Speaking of P.A.L., I got some stuff to say about that one. Most of it is an expression of my observations and what I’ve learned over the years about the Asian experience in the US as an outsider with Asian friends, and part of it is a side-eyed response to certain types of people and what they’ve been saying related to P.A.L. and BLM. But that, too, is an entirely different post. Lots of post ideas goin round today!
@/Future!Nina, I am dreadfully sorry if none of this post was coherent. I didn’t do any of the AP essay twenty-minute pre-planning we learned in ninth grade for this post, unfortunately.
Had a gathering with some of the other interns in my program today. They (obviously) seem really cool! Wish I’d gotten to hang with them in [redacted: major US city], but alas.
Alas indeed.
My ukulele is meant to arrive tomorrow, and I’m also going to finally start on the actual research bit of my internship tomorrow (or, at least, I’m going to do some hardcore prep for it now that I actually know what I’m doing (if there’s time, I’ll start on research-y stuff).)
Today I’m thankful that I’m finally getting this piece of trash (technically, two things) out of my drafts. I’ve hated looking at it every day at the tippy top of my drafts knowing it wasn’t fully formed, but not knowing how to get it to the point where I would be satisfied. Maybe that was a sign that I shouldn’t be posting this at all. Or maybe stream of consciousness style writings just feel like this. idk. This is why we plan, I suppose (though I’m not sure how much planning could have salvaged this tbh). Anyway, it’s out of my hands, off of my chest, and dispelled from my drafts.
I would do a bonus thank but I think that one’s big enough for today.

Okay so there’s this art studio at my uni which hosts classes and as of now I only have four semesters left to take advantage of it and like,,,,,,, I know that these classes do have a cost (from $12 to $250), but like,,, the experiences will cost even more once I’m no longer a student (the cost is double for the general population), and the classes actually seem like fun and it can just be another thing I can do for myself. Like, I wanna take a pottery class bro! And that in addition to the workout class(es) I want to do weekly! And the clubs I want to be involved in! Ballet! Mentoring! Body Combat! Something theatre-related because if I go another six months without a performance I might explode or something. Just, things for me. Only me.
One thing I miss a lot about campus is being able to take myself out on dates. Specifically movie dates. I think I did this twice during my freshman year, maybe? Where I watched one of the free movies my uni was showing that week. Really good movies too. Waves, Parasite. I would get my homework done early, head out for a few hours and enjoy myself. I miss that a lot. And I can’t wait to do it again.
So, yeah. I want the art studio evening classes to be on my radar for this upcoming semester. I want to try out the rock wall at the rec center. I want to try lifting weights. I want to try the little adventure trips hosted by the rec center, maybe even as early as this summer (probably not that soon lol, but it’s nice to dream innit?). I only have two more years left, and there’s so much I want to do~
I think I just really like independence? Or maybe it’s my inflated sense of self-security? But back during the Summer of Glory and Doom I was doing all sorts of things just like, on my own. Did I feel astoundingly lonely? ...I mean, sometimes, yeah. But I also felt so free. And that felt so good.
You know, I talked about this in a previous post just a little bit ago, but I really do think I’m between interests. Like, Critical Role has ended for the next couple of months, and I’m not really on top of the DSMP as much as I was a few months back... I’m nearing the end of ST:TNG too. I’d like to get back to sewing and reading again,, don’t know why I haven’t yet. Honestly I feel so bad just sitting around doing, well, basically nothing. I think it’d be cool to read outside but that region is infested by stupid cicadas, so Imma just chill in here for the next few weeks, I think.
Anyway, found out today that I’m to be neither the tryhard of my internship cohort nor the... well, the seemingly clueless one, so I’m happy with my position in the middle. We have to take a “class” as part of the thing, and uh, personalities are showing through for sure. No one’s really astoundingly attractive though, so.
Today I’m thankful for... tbh I’m thankful for the popcorn my mom bought. I love popcorn, and I’ve been settling for Pop Secret but it is objectively worse than the microwave popcorn that my mom just got. It takes less artificial? Which like, I know, I probably don’t have the first clue as to what “less artificial” would even taste like, but idk it just tastes better? Whatever, I don’t need to justify myself to you, I’m thankful for it and that’s final.
Oh also I just gotta say that I love reading back through some of these journals and finding absolutely golden lines omg. The sentences that catch me completely off guard and make me smile or bust into a bit of laughter. I encountered one last night lol. They just come out of nowhere and make me appreciate the stream of consciousness style of writing sometimes.
OH YEAH ALSO
ST:TNG EPISODE I JUST WATCHED EXPLAINED WHY THERE ARE SO MANY HUMANOID-LOOKIN RACES IN SPACE which like, as an explanation? I didn’t hate it! Actually kinda cool tbh. I was wondering why so many of the intelligent races in space looked super super similar lol. I mean, I don’t think evolution quite works that way, but I’m willing to suspend my disbelief.
last but not least it’s 1:30am and I’m actually feeling pretty tired so I’m going to take this as an opportunity to try to get to bed before 2 am which would be a record early time for me within the past few weeks (...months??). Wish me luck!
