I was like "...ookay, I see why grabbing someones neck while they're unconscious is a bit much, but why is that being treated like a breaking point, nothing even happened, its just a neck." Had to be filled in by the comments section lmaooo

Huh, I guess it's time to talk about the neck scene.

First off, please note that this post is not tagged with anything fandom for a reason and I have made this post unreblog-able. This is meant for CTB people only, as you guys have the full context of the story and understand what my vision is (even if my execution is questionable).

Ok, good.

Back in the chapter's commentary, I said I was going to talk at length about the neck thing and some of my decisions surrounding that plot point. Now is the time to do it, so let's go.

The idea behind this plot point is that I wanted Link to ruin the brotherhood in his pursuit to exert control over the engineer. I had the idea for this scene since the conception of this fic (and I will dig more into that in a moment), but I obviously did not want to risk being misinterpreted.

I tried to think of another way to destroy the brotherhood, but two significant character details severely restricted my options: a) Link could not stop "caring" about the engineer, and b) the engineer's limits for being able to call Link his brother have to be something that somehow surpasses extreme violence.

Having Link toss out the platonic relationship for a failed attempt at something more was the only way I could maintain both character details. Link gets to continue "caring" about the engineer while violating the engineer's clearly defined boundaries.

This also plays a lot into how both of them treat relationships, with Link looking to exert control over others (and himself) while the engineer is searching for relief. This conflict as been building up for many chapters now, so here was the time for it to clash, with the engineer being the decided victor.

Which takes us to why the neck? Well, I wanted some way for Link to express a non-platonic feeling without him needed to touch the bathing suit area. Touching the thigh was too sultry, but the neck was the right mixture of innocuous and creepy.

It's important to note that this is in part influence by my perspective. A while back, a friend of mine started to touch the back of my neck when he developed feelings for me, which is in part of why I view neck-touching as strangely intimate. The neck in general is just a very vulnerable spot that, when you think about it, a lot of people do not like to be touched at. I also just think vampires are hot, ergo neck-touching is kinda sexy.

I was hoping that even if people are not informed by the same experiences as I am, Link's inner musings accompanying the neck touching would help clue the reader into how they should feel about it. In retrospect, I can definitely see how readers can be kinda confused by what's so significant about it.

So, yeah. I played it a little bit dangerously here and really tempted fate in order to achieve this one plot point, especially when I really wanted to make sure that nothing happened in it that could be considered shipping.

"But Frankie, what did you mean that you had this idea since the beginning of this fic?"

Well, okay. Let's talk about deleted content. This is a plotline that never made it to the final product, so please do not consider this canon material the way other deleted ideas have been treated.

I talked a while ago about how even when I decided to commit to the toxic relationship angle for Link and the engineer, I had to pull back on a lot of my ideas in order to make it palatable. One of those ideas was a version of Link and the engineer's relationship that toed that no-shipping line by a lot.

Here's the basics: at the start of the story, the engineer was not going to know that he was bisexual. But after meeting Link, an objectively handsome guy around his age who seemed to care about him a lot, he had his bi-awakening. However, he really struggled with this awakening as he was already in a relationship and felt like he was betraying his Zelda. His goal was to not let anyone know about his crush and to get over it as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Link realized early on why the engineer was both clingy and distant with him and started teasing him for it. The teasing was fairly mean as he just liked to see the engineer get flustered and frustrated without realizing that he was being toyed with. Link was going to be an expert at appearing innocuous whenever he teased the engineer to make the engineer think that it was all in his head.

But as the engineer got more comfortable in his role in the war, his crush went away and he affirmed his appreciation for Link's emotional support and the family unit he built with him by calling him his brother, which Link accepts.

That is, until Link starts cheating on Lana.

Remember that scene where Link got drunk and had to be hauled back to camp by the engineer? Originally, Link pissed the engineer off not only by telling him to cheat on Zelda, but by taking his teasing way too far by propositioning him (as a drunken joke). That's when the engineer realized that he had been toyed with for almost a year now. That would spark a fight between them.

However, the engineer would come to forgive Link, in part because Link convinced him he was actually sorry, and because the engineer did not want to disrupt the family dynamic he had built with Link.

From there, the relationship would continue as it has been in the final story. But with the added context and relationship history, Link's neck touching scene would be an even bigger "fuck you" to the engineer.

This entire subplot was based on the idea of the homoerotic nature of a soldier's bond. I wrote a thesis part about this in college, but basically wars can offer a way for men to develop close bonds with other men that could not exist in a heteronormative society.

This subplot took a very literal interpretation of it, but even then, it's obvious by the summary that even with a confirmed crush involved, this was not meant to be shipping content. This was meant to offer another look at Link's paradoxical cruelty and love.

But even I can admit that it skirts way too close to the idea of shipping. That's why I took it out of the final story. I just did not have the energy back then to argue with people about what counted as shipping.

Actually, I still do not have this energy, which begs the question as to why I would go include any form of this plot.

“I don’t care if you kick me to the curb and set up my room on Craigslist but I refuse to work with misogynistic, egotistical, piece of Euro-trash that is your shitty, lying, cheating ex-boyfriend Lorenzo St. John.”

Bonnie is out of breath by the time she’s done with her rant and Katya lets out a sigh at all of the prying eyes around her office that are waiting for her response.

“I really ought to rethink this whole open-door policy,” Katya mutters tiredly. “I desperately need my door back.”

“Katya!”

She looks up at her best friend/editor in chief and lets out a sigh.

“Look, I can’t.”

“You can’t or you won’t?”

“I can’t,” Katya repeats. “Enzo wanted me to be his editor and I have too much on my plate to fall onto his lap and do his bidding all over again. You are the only one I can trust that he won’t try to flirt or friend into getting his way. I need you to do this for me not only as your boss but as your friend.”

She pauses as she notices Bonnie’s resigned expression.

“Mostly as your boss though,” Katya amends. “If HR asks, it’s because I’m your boss.”

Bonnie has to let out a laugh at that and the tension in your office is soon relieved.

“Fine, fine,” she sighs out. “I’ll do it but you owe me. Big time.”

“I’m already planning on doing so,” Katya relent. “A midnight bar crawl or a road trip to wherever you choose. Or maybe…”

Katya slides the folder across her desk for Bonnie to take.

“What is that?” she asks curiously.

“Why don’t you take a look and see for yourself?”

Bonnie takes up the folder and looks through the contents.

“Oh my God,” she exclaims. “The lit mag got approved!”

Katya grins at her excitement.

“This is your baby, Bonnie,” Katya tells her. “I’m letting you take control here but I have to let you know of one big requirement and I hope you don’t hold it against me.”

“Alright,” Bonnie nervously agrees. “What is it?”

“The publication of MoonLit will have to have its first release at the same time as the MoonStone Online Publishing website.”

Bonnie lets out a sigh of relief at hearing this.

“That’s fine,” she answers. “I won’t have things done by then anyway.”

“Perfect,” Kaya responds with a smile. “Now, get to work! We’ve got a lot to do today.”

“Ay, ay, chief,” Bonnie states with a mock salute.

Katya watches as her best friend practically skips her way out of the office. She leans back into her chair relieved to have that issue out of the way but knowing there were hundreds more like it that she had to filter through.

A knock on Katya’s door frame interrupts her again and she finds a shy Davina to be the cause.

“I’m sorry to break in on your already busy day,” Davina apologizes as she steps up to Katya’s desk. “But I just got a call from Viking Co.”

“What did they want?” Katya asks in alarm.

She wasn’t sure if the acceleration of her heart was one out of panic or excitement. Katya hadn’t heard from Elijah since their outing on Sunday. She had expected some sort of text or maybe a sudden appearance to her office but he hadn’t done any of those things. Just pure radio silence.

“They were hoping to have a follow-up meeting over the online publishing project,” Davina summarizes. “I know it’s late notice, but they set it for this Friday at 5.”

“Alright,” Katya mutters anxiously. “That’s quite soon. We need to have something… anything ready for them then. I… crap.”

Katya rolls her chair out of her desk and starts to motion for Davina to follow her.

“Get Josh into the conference room,” Katya orders. “We’ve gotta bulldoze through two weeks of work in hopefully one day.”

Davina’s eyes widen at her statement but does as she’s told watching as Katya stormed into the conference room and began to write an outline on the dry erase wall.

Katya fidgets with the hem of her skirt unable to stop herself from doing so. She had everything prepared for this impromptu meeting but she couldn’t stop herself from being nervous.

“You’ll be fine,” Bonnie assured her as she stopped by her office before she left. “You put your heart, mind, and soul into this and it's perfect.”

Katya just smiled nervously.

“Unless you’re nervous because of something new altogether,” Bonnie pinpoints. “You never did tell me about that Sunday meeting that took all day.”

“It was nothing.”

“If you say so,” Bonnie shrugs with a grin. “I guess if all fails, you can always sleep with the gentleman Elijah and hope to appease his mind that way.”

Katya had immediately shunned Bonnie out of her office at that comment and had tried to keep her mind clear of any sexual thoughts revolving around her boss.

It was hard to prevent her mind from straying towards that direction but Katya focused on her work. Her hard and great work.

She wasn’t someone who sought praise in everything she did, but Katya wanted Elijah to appreciate the work that she and her team had done in the few days they’ve had. It wasn’t perfect, but the potential it had was driving Katya fully.

Katya wanted to prove to Elijah that his investment in MoonStone, that his investment in her, was not a mistake. MoonStone under her leadership has true potential and she wanted Elijah to see what the future held for it.

With one deep breath, Katya makes her way to Gia’s desk who is quick to motion her towards the conference room.

“He’s ready for you.”

Katya thanks Gia before making her way into the conference room. She smiles at the sight of Elijah who immediately stands up from his seat to greet her. Except that smile fades away at the serious expression he held on his face that hid all emotions from her.

She keeps up the smile though as she realizes there’s someone else in the room.

“Good evening, Mr. Mikaelson and...?”

Elijah was too slow to make the introduction as Kol is quick to rise from his seat and offer out his hand to Katya.

“The younger and more handsome Mr. Mikaelson,” Kol responds with a kiss on her hand. “Charmed, I’m sure?”

Katya has to fight back the laugh on the back of her throat as she glances over at Elijah for confirmation as to what has just occurred. Elijah looks as if he’s in physical pain which is the most emotion she’s seen in him since she’s come in.

“I apologize for the behavior of my younger brother, Kol,” he explains. “He will be shadowing me for the time being. I hope you don’t mind.”

“Not at all,” Katya answers as she pulls her hand away from Kol’s hold. “Shall I begin then?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

Katya looks between the Mikaelson brothers confused at the responses. Elijah pinches the bridge of his nose while Kol just continues to grin.

“Isn’t it proper to have some polite conversation instead of jumping straight into business?” Kol offers up. “Like how’s your day going? How have you been? Etcetera, etcetera.”

“My day’s been fine and I’ve been great,” Katya answers as she slides her presentation to the both of them. She was relieved to have made an extra copy now but that ease was quickly turned into turmoil by the chaotic intruder in the meeting. “I’m assuming things have been good for both of you?”

“No.”

“Yes.”

Once again the conflict of their responses do nothing to ease the tension in the room. Elijah simply lets out a sigh and nods for Katya to begin her presentation which she does.

“...We’ve got an approximate timeline to launch online MoonStone by early May. My team will be focusing on this solely while my Editor in Chief will have MoonLit magazine ready to launch on the same date as well. As you can see from the budget…”

“That’s quite low,” Elijah interrupts. “Are these numbers right?”

“Yes,” Katya answers with a small smile. “It’s also just an estimate but I’m confident that we will either reach or be below that budget.”

Elijah skims down the spreadsheet and pinpoints the problem.

“Your team consists of two?”

“Aside from me and some advice from my lawyer Mr. Gerard, yes.”

“That’s quite small for the amount of work that is required.”

“I know what needs to be done and I know that my team of two can easily do it all.”

“Well I beg to differ.”

Katya has to refrain from getting defensive. It was such a minor detail in her presentation.

“I know what my team and I are capable of…”

“Your timeline is a hopeful estimate at best. It would be wise for the sake of keeping the deadline to increase your team. I’ll approve of the new budget once you get those new numbers calculated.”

“That’s great but I’m not going to hire more people.”

Elijah looks up at her and Katya has to remain calm at the new demeanor he held at the moment.

“Excuse me?”

“I know I have you backing me financially but the finances are not the issue here. My team is capable of doing the work and to make that deadline.”

“More work means more people are required. At least to lighten your load.”

“I can’t argue with your logic there,” Katya responds. “But I am no better than my employees just because I’m the boss. I can do the work so I will do it. There is no need for me to expand my team. We’re fine as is.”

“You have a company to run. You can’t be spreading yourself thin.”

“I am not,” Katya argues. “I know what I’m capable of.”

“I don’t think you do.”

Katya can’t hold herself back this time. The hitch in her breath at his statement was the only response she could make.

“As entertaining as this is, I’m getting hungry.”

Elijah and Katya turn to Kol in surprise. Amidst their argument, they had forgotten his presence.

“You don’t trust her and she is hurt by it,” Kol continues. “So in order to remedy the situation and wrap this up so I may take myself out to dinner, how about we come up with a solution to this menial problem?”

“What do you suggest we do?” Katya asks the younger Mikaelson.

Kol smiles at the question and leans forward in his seat.

“Middle ground,” Kol suggests. “My brother thinks you need more help and you don’t. Hence, I come into play.”

“Kol, enough.”

Kol ignores his elder brother and continues with his explanation to Katya.

“I have no experience whatsoever in the publishing realm so I will be no aid to you which is what you want. What I can do though is keep an eye on you and your team and if you are to fail… spread yourself too thin or miss certain deadlines then I will report to my brother which then he will be forced to expand your team. A win-win and a lose-lose situation.”

“I’m not going to allow you to…”

“I’m in.”

Elijah turns to Katya with a mix of surprise and betrayal.

“Katya, you don’t understand…”

“It’s business hours, Mr. Mikaelson, you are to address me as Ms. Fontaine,” Katya corrects him as she shuts her portfolio closed. “And whatever I don’t understand you may type up into an email and send to me by Monday morning which is when I expect you at work, Mr. Mikaelson Jr.”

“Ms. Fontaine…”

“This meeting has surpassed the hour scheduled for it,” Katya continues ignoring Elijah’s attempt of mending the situation. “I won’t keep you much longer. We wouldn’t want you to spread yourself thin just because this meeting ran too long.”

“Katya, please…”

“If you have any questions or concerns, call my assistant and set up another meeting. Have a good night.”

Katya packs up her things and takes her leave without another word. Elijah simply watches her go knowing better than to chase after her while Kol was present. Though, he regretted not doing so anyway.

“Well I think that went very well considering you insulted her blatantly to her face,” Kol states with a grin. “All of this could be remedied though if you just…”

“I’m not firing you, Kol,” Elijah interrupts him. “You made a commitment now and you’re going to follow through it.”

Elijah leaves the conference room and Kol simply shrugs off the order.

“You’ll regret this soon enough, brother. Just wait and see.”

Shane Dawson has been shown to mock black people on several occasions, saying the n word, doing blackface and creating stereotypical recurring characters.

When beginning on YouTube, Shane had a character called “Shanaynay” who was supposed to be a “ghetto-white girl”. When playing her, Shane often used ghetto stereotypes. She was a recurring character from 2008-2011. Although he has long stopped playing this character, he was continuing to sell the merch and profit off his racism as recently as last year!

He has also done blackface in his character skits, and said the n word as Shanaynay. On one of these occasions, he called an actual black woman a “n*gga bitch monkey woman”. Watch the full video for all occasions.

Here are some additional comments on this matter.

Shane Dawson has acted inappropriately with and around minors for a long time.

He has probably done this even more than his blackface, and that’s saying something.

This clip, which went around last year, contains him calling a 6-year-old child sexy and admitting to googling CP. This is from his Shane and Friends podcast, which contains a lot of explicit clips.

He has also asked his teenage fan to “show herself” and “shut up and twerk”. This is from 3:55 - 4:29 in this video.

One of the instances really going around on Twitter at the moment is him pretending to jerk off to a picture of the then-11 year old Willow Smith.

A reminder that her family has not forgiven him, so neither should you!

Honestly, there are way too many occasions of this. Please check out this Twitter thread which lists a lot of times he has made inappropriate comments and did inappropriate things.

Another very distasteful thing he has done is claim to solve the murder of an actual six-year-old child, profiting off “speaking” to her spirit.

Shane Dawson has joked about bestiality on camera multiple times.

This is just straight-up weird. It went around a lot last year, but in case you’ve forgotten, here is a playlist of a few clips. He also rubbed his face in his dog’s crotch but I can’t find a direct video of that by itself.

Shane Dawson is transphobic as hell.

Shane Dawson has promoted and supported terrible people and channels.

This has been a long-time criticism of his viral documentary series, but it is still important to remember.

Let’s start with the problems with this in chronological order.

His first viral documentary series was The Truth about Tanacon.

Tanacon, to begin with, had several issues. Despite big dreams, it failed spectacularly due to lack of organisation and preparation before the event. There were many last minute changes and it generally lacked several necessities in events. Some issues were disorganised registrations, reserved meet and greets that didn’t go through the system, clashings with VidCon (a bigger event), inappropriate content creators, adversied content creators that didn’t appear, condoms in the goodie bag, lies about free tickets, no food, no room for anything, one hallway, lack of regulation in wristbands, underestimation of guests, overly expensive merch, no cooling system, no fire solutions (meaning they kicked everyone out) and it goes on.

Despite actual people suffering due to the incompetency of Tana, Shane made her out to be an innocent martyr. This gets even worse as you realise than Tana has been exposed for several racist comments throughout her YouTube career.

Shane is clearly shown to be a terrible interviewer, presenting more as a friend than someone who is willing to find the “truth” of Tanacon. Instead of learning about Tanacon from an unbiased journalist, we get an obscured version of what happened, engineered to sympathise with Tana instead of her admitting to her mistakes.

Yet, this somehow was only the beginning of the problems with the documentary series, as the next one was with Jeffree Starr.

I don’t even know where to begin with the problems with this.

Firstly, Jeffree is perhaps the most problematic YouTuber who is still popular on the website. He has been exposed as racist, sexist, supporting of rapists, terrible to fans, transphobic, ableist, fatphobic, homophobic, insensitive to suicidal people, sexualising of minors, fascist and violent. Check out this thread here for the full details and proof of these claims.

Shane is not stupid. He is aware of these controversies, but has continued to support Jeffree. When a fan called him out, he was extremely rude and was very mad, and supporting all the hate the fan was getting.

The entire documentary series is about him befriending Jeffree, and making him out to be a good person.

Jeffree should NOT be given a positive platform like this, and he should NOT be continuing to get away with being “cancelled”. So many other YouTubers have been “cancelled” for lesser things, yet Jeffree manages to always get away with it.

The next documentary series was the Jake Paul series. This is perhaps his most controversial documentary series.

Shane is not a therapist, a psychiatrist or a mental health professional. Even though he did consult some people, they are not allowed to diagnose people based on suspicions and videos. Yet, throughout the entire series, he calls Jake Paul a sociopath, and using that label to justify everything he has done.

Jake and Logan have both stirred up some of the biggest controversies on the platform, yet Shane gave them the ability to thrive. Like he did with Tana and Jeffree, he humanised him and edited it to the audience would sympathise with Jake. He has been exposed to scam his young fans, been rude to his neighbours and cast members, made light of serious disorders like anxiety, saying the n word and doing several things for clout, such as “marrying” Tana Mongeau.

As addressed in the documentary series, Alissa Violet, Jake’s ex-girlfriend, has shared her stories of physical abuse in the Team 10 mansion in private life, yet Shane did not fully address this or even mention this to Jake in the episode after. This further proves that Shane is incapable of running a documentary series with such deep themes as he will gloss over them or not address them properly.

This issue is further seen in his documentary with Eugenia Cooney.

A warning that I have not actually seen this as I have heard it contains triggering subject material which I do not wish to subject myself to in interests for my personal mental health - I am only going off the statements of experts and viewers.

In theory, this documentary could have been brilliant. After all, it is two people who have gone/is going through eating disorders and discussing it. However, experts have said that this could be harmful and it is easy to see why.

As much as I do not like Shane, I, and experts, do believe that he had good intentions behind this documentary. However, it probably would have been better if they consulted an expert regularly throughout the documentary when handling a touchy subject. After all, many of Shane’s viewers are young and/or influential, and a correct portrayal of a subject which is terrifying and real to many people watching is very important.

Here is an excerpt from this article about how he handled this:

Other fans were concerned with Cooney's safety, given that she referred to having an eating disorder in the past tense, signaling that she may not be considering further treatment.

"She certainly looks like she is physically healthier, but mentally she still seems like she's struggling a lot and she tries to cover it with her overwhelming positivity," another comment on the video says.

Experts who spoke with INSIDER — and who have not personally treated Cooney — are wary of considering Cooney's treatment a success story.

"When we are in the midst of our eating disorder we are very, very good at wearing masks. We're very good at playing a role that is very convincing and wants to let people know that we're okay," Chevese Turner, the Chief Strategy & Policy Officer for the National Eating Disorders Association, told INSIDER."A month of treatment is just barely scratching the surface of the road to recovery. While she put on a good face and was very chipper and cheerful, I'm not convinced that's what's going on inside. How do any of us know for sure?"

While both experts told INSIDER they believe Dawson had good intentions, they also expressed numerous concerns with the way the video presented the reality of eating disorders, and Cooney's recovery in particular. Turner says having Cooney share her story could be very cathartic, but she worries how much of her appearance was intended to resurrect or preserve her career."What's essentially happening is that people are bullying her online for her looks and her body and that does have an impact, it impacts all of us when that happens. For someone with an eating disorder, the impact can be devastating. I think [Dawson is] trying to help in his own way, but probably the thing that would help the most is her having more time in recovery," Turner said.

"I don't want to speculate, but obviously her success on YouTube is a driving factor to get back to work. None of us know if she's fully capable for that work and I would want to believe that the people around her who care about her most are confident that she can handle it," she continued. "I hope that they'll encourage her to take a break."

Overall, it has been shown that Shane is unfit to handle a documentary series with his evidently extremely biased views, and he should consult more professionals when editing. Although many people would argue that he has good intentions, it is possible to have good intentions while being irresponsible. Shane is aware of his large audience, and his influence over people around the globe. He should be more careful when creating a video with strong themes which many viewers may be suffering through or offended by.

Either than his documentary series, Shane is also friends with other problematic people outside it - most infamously, Trisha Paytas.

Trisha Paytas’ brand has become being extremely controversial. However, this doesn’t excuse that she has done and should not normalise her behaviours. She has been proved to be very transphobic and homophobic, as well as racist, ableist, abusive and insensitive to people with mental illnesses and disorders, notably DID. When 20-year-old growing YouTuber Bobby Burns released a video giving valid criticism to Shane Dawson, Shane featured him on his channel and pushed him as a heater.

This was not a thing which only happened once. Shane decided to continue to feature him on his channel, branding him as a hater. However, Shane’s dedicated fanbase did not like this and began to send hate to Bobby. Due to the lack of popularity, Shane stopped interacting with Bobby and didn’t feature him in any more videos without attempting to “save his career” like he has done with so many other people.

That is not to say that Bobby is faultless. I am not that familiar with his content, but I have heard that he did contribute to his channel’s demise, which makes sense. However, as a huge content creator, it was irresponsible of Shane to take a growing channel and brand him as a negative hater. He is aware of his audience, and that is important to remember. When he has such a large fanbase, he needs to be more careful with the videos he is showing them, and the characterisations of YouTubers.

However, what Shane is going under fire most recently is his involvement in the James Charles scandal last year.

Despite denial, Shane has been proved to play an important role in the “cancelling” of James last year, encouraging Tati to upload the video and making false accusations of predatory behaviour. This was highly likely done to degrade a competitor’s palette so his collaboration with Jeffree would be more successful.

Recently, he posted these screenshots on Twitter and then deleted the Tweet.

This proves his blatant immaturity. Somehow, James, the youngest of the four YouTubers involved in the scandal, has grown up the most. Shane was a part of the downfall of James, causing him to debate suicide. His defence for this was saying that he “needed to be served a slice of humble pie the size of the fucking Empire State Building”.

James Charles is not faultless, and he should not be made out to be an angel or a martyr in this situation. However, no one deserves to have suicidal thoughts, and anyone who defends this by saying that it was the humbling he needed is disgusting.

Shane Dawson attempted to out Dan and Phil for views and clout.

As a bisexual man who has opened up about his fear of being outed when he was closeted, he should be ashamed of everything he did to Dan and Phil.

Like many YouTubers at the time, Shane used the Phandom to get views and subscribers. In doing this, he objectified and sexualised Dan to his young and influential audience. Check out this video where he said that he wanted to facefuck Dan in an orgy while watching a video where he just turned 18. In that clip, he also split up Dan and Phil into “cute” and “not cute”.

It even went to the point where he asked the Psychic Twins about the sexuality of Dan and Phil. In this clip, he accuses them of queerbaiting as well as supporting the Psychic Twins’ invasive and insensitive comments about them not dressing gay enough, diss of them refusing to go on their podcast and outing and stereotyping them. This was as recent as 2017.

So what from here? Shane has released an apology video, but words don’t mean anything without action. Here are some suggestions for what he could do to actually show further improvement.

He could stop doing conspiracy videos in the harmful and biased style he is known for, and delete his videos despite the views.

He could stop being friends with such toxic and controversial people.

He could donate his money and time to helping out the #BlackLivesMatter movement, and to black charities/organisations in general. It does not negate what he has done, and it is not in my place to forgive him if he does do that, but it would represent his improvement.

He could formally apologise to the parents and the family of the children he has sexualised.

But he will probably not do that. However, as a hater of cancel culture, I hope that he does improve as a person. It is not my goal to send hate, but to inform people. Sending Shane death threats or insensitive comments are the last things we need. To criticise him for doing that, then doing it yourself is hypocritical and harmful. Instead, we’ll just have to inform ourselves and wait for the future.

Even local students found it difficult at times to navigate the famous campus.

You took this as an opportunity to lazily get going on the notes projected on the board. It was mostly stuff you’d get on the syllabus anyway, but you figured it wouldn’t hurt to have a digital copy; you did have a knack for misplacing important documents when you needed them the most and you did not want to have to suffer anymore than you anticipated from a course titled ‘Survival Korean.’ Despite having lived in the capital city for a couple months, your Korean had barely progressed from being able to order coffee and read instagram captions. Err, 70% of some instagram captions. So here you were at 8:45 am on this warm and cloudy day, sitting next to your practically fluent friend, mentally playing off your anxiety about being forced to brokenly speak in front of people who probably were only taking the class for an easy A. Before you knew it the professor was calling for attention to commence the class. You barely listened but maintained eye contact and nodding confidently to assert dominance. At least thats what you thought your half-assed efforts were doing for you. “Throughout the following weeks you’ll be working closely with a group of hand selected TA’s who will help you on your weekly tasks. They have worked hard to prepare engaging activities for all of you so please look forward to their lessons.” He signaled at a few older students scattered across the wall opposite to your seat, who flashed friendly smiles or lifted their hands up to identify themselves. You scanned and your eyes fell on one boy with wispy bangs and a soft pout on his lips.

Your one brain cell, as lame as it was at times, immediately recognized him as the boy who was sitting outside the classroom before class started. Getting a better chance at seeing his features you realized he was lowkey more handsome than other boys you’d seen on campus. Everyone knew Yonsei was notorious for attractive and bougie students but you did not expect to have a TA that looked like an Oscar nominated actor. You wondered if he was as kind as his eyes presented, or if he was a case of reverse-bitch face. You were brought back to consciousness when he turned and your eyes connected. You remained expressionless when his plump lips curved upward slightly. You felt your chest clench of embarrassment and quickly shifted your eyes at other students, focusing on each one for a few seconds to play off the fact that you were obviously drooling for this stranger. Why did you feel yourself burning up? It’s not like you have never seen a pretty boy. You weren’t the type to get so worked up over that. You cringed at yourself for feeling so affected that you didn’t even notice the professor had finished talking and students were shuffling to put their stuff away.

You felt your friend poke your arm, “Dude, let’s go.” You looked up at her and slammed your MacBook shut. “Oh— yeah sure! Do you have class right now?” She looked at her phone and groaned, “Ugh, I still have a whole hour before it starts. You snapped the case open, swinging your hair around to plop the earphone in, missing handsome boy who was standing by the podium by the front door, watching you with curiosity, a tiny smile once again on his lips.

You felt your nose scrunching up into a frown when a loud laugh brought you back to the present moment. Looking down from the menu to the register you noticed a wavy haired, uniform clad barista throwing his head back at what seemed to be the funniest joke in the world. He flashed a boxy smile at whoever was leaned over the bar waiting for their coffee all while his hands expertly handled the register, tucking away won bills and passing a receipt to the customer who just finished ordering.

“Wow, I guess all the cute boys decided to torture us today,” your friend whispered, raising her eyebrow at you. You couldn’t even try to argue with her, this boy definitely contributed to evidence that only attractive students attended Yonsei… kind of like how handsome boy did as well… As if the universe had heard your mind ruminating, and decided it was time to intervene, the person leaned over the counter turned to look in your direction, and you had to bite your tongue to not gasp when those sparkly brown eyes connected with yours.

You loved that shit but never for one second believed it applied to the real world.

So why, God why, did you feel like time had stopped the second his eyes met yours and nothing else, especially not your midday politics class, mattered? “Hey! You’re one our teachers for survival Korean, right?” Your friend’s voice cut through your bizarre cinematic moment. She had stepped forward to order while she greeted none other than mister handsome boy. Although it had felt like an eternity, only a few seconds had transpired so the odds of you looking like a blithering idiot to others was very slim. “Yeah, you have a good eye, there’s about 10 of us there,” he smiled at your friend. “Are you both in the class? My name’s Seokjin, I’ll be teaching the lesson in a couple weeks.” You friend shot a quick smile at him and turned to the barista to order. You glanced quickly at her, the barista whose name tag read Taehyung, and then back at handsome b— err, Jin.

Since both your friend and Taehyung were busy in a transaction, you had no choice but to keep the conversation alive. “Uhh yeah, we are… my name is ____,” your eyes finally settled on his. He straightened up from the coffee bar, starching his arms up and brushing the back of his head.

“Are you gonna order coffee, too? Speaking of, where’s mine? Ya! Tae!” He motioned over at the register and you remembered the sole reason for you climbing a steep hill 10 minutes away from your next classroom. You mumbled a soft oh, thanks and faced back to the register to order. It looks like Taehyung had abandoned his spot to make Jin’s drink, so a kind-eyed but sleepy girl took your order instead.

Stuffing your loose change back in your cardholder you made your way over to the main lobby where your friend stood with Jin and two other boys. “Ugh, I think I’ve had enough of feeling awkward for today,” you thought as you slowed down your steps. Always a queen with perfect timing, as you arrived you heard Tae scream out Jin’s name and order and Jin waved goodbye. “See you next week! Don’t forget to pick up a good notebook!”

“What,” you deadpanned as your friend turned on her heel to stare at you with an expression you only saw when stumbling across an aesthetic new cafe.“What are the odds of us getting such a hot TA for the easiest class ever?! And he’s not a complete jerk, wow.” HA, your lips pursed out as your inner monologue from an hour ago quickly flashed in your find. “I mean, maybe now he’s nice before he actually gets to teach us, what if he completely switches up? As you opened your mouth to protest she dove away back to the coffee bar for your drinks.

Blowing air out gently from your pursed lips you dwelled on what’s to come. Okay… maybe if you kept an open mind the class (and this very specific TA) wouldn’t be so awful. You did choose to come abroad to a country where didn’t speak the language in hopes of eventually becoming fluent, after all. What good would negativity do? And anyway, it’s not like Jin would be teaching the entire course, so he probably wouldn’t even be able to clock how awkward he made you act (not that you understood either, its not the first time you see a cute boy.) As your friend came back holding two iced caramel macchiatos you resolved to just be as gentle on yourself as possible this semester. You had faced high stress and lost enough sleep last semester over things that were not worth it in the long run, and the thought of handling things the same way again felt draining. Even if it meant looking like a dumbass in front of the class asking wtf anything meant after reading a wall of text, you were going to put in effort in doing well to avoid issues later on and nothing was going to distract you. Not even soft, perfectly messy hair or pretty brown eyes or pillowy lips that curled around words so perfectly you had to restrain yourself from daydreaming.

To Dorsey’s credit he does foreground this tension in his tweet storm — where he writes [emphasis ours]:

Internet political ads present entirely new challenges to civic discourse: machine learning-based optimization of messaging and micro-targeting, unchecked misleading information, and deep fakes. All at increasing velocity, sophistication, and overwhelming scale.

These challenges will affect ALL internet communication, not just political ads. Best to focus our efforts on the root problems, without the additional burden and complexity taking money brings. Trying to fix both means fixing neither well, and harms our credibility.

This is good stuff from Dorsey. Surprisingly good, given his and Twitter’s long years of free speech fundamentalism — when the company gained a reputation for being wilfully blind and deaf to the fact that for free expression to flourish online it needs a protective shield of civic limits. Otherwise ‘freedom to amplify any awful thing’ becomes a speech chiller that disproportionately harms minorities.

Aka freedom of speech is not the same as freedom of reach, as Dorsey now notes.

Even with Twitter making some disappointing choices in how it defines political issues, for the purposes of this ad ban, the contrast with Facebook and Zuckerberg — still twisting and spinning in the same hot air; trying to justify incoherent platform policies that sell out democracy for a binary ideology which his own company can’t even stick to — looks stark.

The timing of Dorsey’s tweet-storm, during Facebook’s earnings call, was clearly intended to make that point.

“Zuckerberg wants us to believe that one must be for or against free speech with no nuance, complexity or cultural specificity, despite running a company that’s drowning in complexity,” writes cultural historian, Siva Vaidhyanathan, confronting Facebook’s moral vacuousness in a recent Guardian article responding to another Zuckerberg ‘manifesto’ on free speech. “He wants our discussions to be as abstract and idealistic as possible. He wants us not to look too closely at Facebook itself.”

Facebook’s position on speech does only stand up in the abstract. Just as its ad-targeting business can only run free of moral outrage in unregulated obscurity, where the baked in biases — algorithmic and user generated — are safely hidden from view so people can’t joins the dots on how they’re being damaged.

We shouldn’t be surprised at how quickly the scandal-prone company is now being called on its ideological BS. We have a savvier political class as a result of the platform-scale disinformation and global data scandals of the past few years. Twitter can claim a little distance from that business model not only because it’s considerably less successful than Facebook at generating money by monopolizing attention, but also because it provides greater leeway for its users to build and follow their own interest networks, free from algorithmic interference (though it does do algorithms too).

It has also been on a self-proclaimed reform path for some time. Most recently saying it wants to be responsible for promoting “conversational health on its platform. No one would say it’s there yet but perhaps we’re finally getting to see some action. Even if banning political ads is mostly a quick PR win for Twitter.

The really hard work continues, though. Namely rooting out bot armies before their malicious propaganda can pollute the public sphere. Twitter hasn’t said it’s close to being able to fix that.

Facebook is also still failing to stem the tide of ‘organic’ politicized fake content on its platform. Fakes that profit at our democratic expense by spreading hate and lies.

For this type of content Facebook offers no searchable archive (as it now does for paid ads which it defines as political) — thereby providing ongoing cover for dark money to do its manipulative hack-job on democracy by free-posting via groups and pages.

Plus, even where Facebook claims to be transparently raising the curtain on paid political influence it’s abjectly failing to do so. Its political ads API is still being blasted by research academics as not fit for purpose. Even as the company policy cranks up pressure on external fact-checkers by giving politicians the green light to run ads that lie.

It has also been accused of applying a biased standard when it comes to weeding out “coordinated inauthentic behavior”, as Facebook euphemistically calls the networks of fake accounts set up to amplify and juice reach — when the propaganda in question is coming from within the US and leans toward the political right.

Facebook denies this, claiming for example that a network of pages on its platform reported to be exclusively boosting content from US conservative news site, The Daily Wire, are “real pages run by real people in the U.S., and they don’t violate our policies“. Or indeed the same hateful individuals maintaining other accounts on different Facebook-owned social properties. Inconsistency of policy enforcement is Facebook’s DNA.

Set against all that Dorsey’s decision to take a stance against political ads looks positively statesmanlike.

It is also, at a fundamental level, obviously just the right thing to do. Buying a greater share of attention than you’ve earned politically is regressive because it favors those with the deepest pockets. Though of course Twitter’s stance won’t fix the rest of a broken system where money continues to pour in and pollute politics.

We also don’t know the fine-grained detail of how Twitter’s algorithms amplify political speech when it’s packaged in organic tweet form. So whether its algorithmic levers are more likely to be triggered into boosting political tweets that inflame and incite, or those that inform and seek to unite.

As I say, the whole of Twitter’s platform can sum to political advertising. And the company does apply algorithms to surface or suppress tweets based on its proprietary (and commercial) determination of ‘engagement quality’. So its entire business is involved in shaping how visible (or otherwise) tweeted speech is.

That very obviously includes plenty of political speech. Not for nothing is Twitter Trump’s platform of choice.

Nothing about its ban on political ads changes all that. So, as ever, where social media self-regulation is concerned, what we are being given is — at best — just fiddling around the edges.

A cynical eye might say Twitter’s ban is intended to distract attention from more structural problems baked into these attention-harvesting Internet platforms.

The toxic political discourse problem that democracies and societies around the world are being forced to grapple with is as a consequence of how Internet platforms distribute content and shape public discussion. So what’s really key is how these companies use our information to program what we each get to see.

The fact that we’re talking about Twitter’s political ad ban risks distracting from the “root problems” Dorsey referenced in passing. (Though he would probably offer a different definition of their cause. In the tweet storm he just talks about “working hard to stop people from gaming our systems to spread misleading info”.)

Facebook’s public diagnosis of the same problem is always extremely basic and blame-shifting. It just says some humans are bad, ergo some bad stuff will be platformed by Facebook — reflecting the issue back at humanity.

Here’s an alternative take: The core issue underpinning all these problems around how Internet platforms spread toxic propaganda is the underlying fact of taking people’s data in order to manipulate our attention.

This business of microtargeting — or behavioral advertising, as it’s also called — turns everyone into a target for some piece of propaganda or other.

It’s a practice that sucks regardless of whether it’s being done to you by Donald Trump or by Disney. Because it’s asymmetrical. It’s disproportionate. It’s exploitative. And it’s inherently anti-democratic.

By quitting you will not only save yourself and can also do your behalf for the environment which can be already choosing a beating due to world wide utilization of the classic fuels.

FCC Commissioner Clyburn talks about net neutrality at CES

Commissioner Mignon Clyburn has been a vocal defender of net neutrality and even helped author the Open Internet Order in 2015. She was on the ground and Las Vegas for CES and was nice enough to make time to swing by the Engadget stage. She sat down to talk about the importance of net neutrality and her quest to protect it for future generations as well as how current policies are putting at risk those most vulnerable. Unfortunately, there were some technical problems with our audio during the interview, so we've included a slightly abridged transcript after the break.

Terrence O'Brien: Hello, internet, and welcome back to CES. I am Managing Editor Terrence O'Brien, live from the Engadget stage from the floor at the insanely crowded and loud Las Vegas Convention Center, and we have a really special treat for you this morning. We have Commissioner Mignon Clyburn from the FCC. You've been there since 2009. You've helped draft the Open Internet Order, and you have been a very vocal defender of net neutrality.

Commissioner Mingon Clyburn: Absolutely. When we see all of this innovation in 2.4 million square feet of floor space -- this was not accidental. This was pooled by good policy, I think, crafted and embodied in a 2015 Open Internet Order that provided certainty. That provided a means to oxygen, so to speak, to all of this innovation and investment.

O'Brien: So what is it about net neutrality that makes it so important to driving innovation? How does it fuel this market?

Clyburn: It took every aspect of the ecosystem and it took every player in this space. It provided certainty for those who need to access online. It said to you that no one, no entity would be able to block all the product or advantage of their business interests over yours. So it provided that level of certainty and openness and inclusion that I think we have taken for granted.

Now, the majority has said, we have basically handed the keys to the internet to large internet service providers. And that certainty is gone. They have the ability to do all the things that we fear the most. That, again, viewed all this innovation and inclusion. You don't have to have a storeroom. It doesn't even matter where you live if you have online activity. You are able to engage in the space. Commerce, education, help. All of these things are available to you. And that to me is the right shame in all of this.

O'Brien: And at the heart of the Open Internet Order was the reclassifying broadband as a Title II service. Do you still feel that Title II is the best way forward for protecting net neutrality?

Clyburn: It was the strongest legal authority prepared. It was upheld by the court. It provided the level of certain protections for everyone in this space. So I think that if you have that mind meld I'm gonna sort of trick you, or if you have that mind meld or regulatory meld that everyone is protected, everyone is enabled, then yes, I think that was the best foot forward.

O'Brien: Opponents argue that those rules were put in place in 1934 under the Telecommunications Act, and it's kind of dated. But instead, they wanna go back to rules put in place in 1996, I believe. What's changed? Why do you think going back to these pre-World War II rules is a better way forward?

Clyburn: I'm gonna take a slight issue with that.

O'Brien: Sure.

Clyburn: Foundation might have been laid by what we have learned in the past. Particularly when it comes to critical services like broadband. Like voice service. But what we did with the 2015 rules is we got rid of 25 provisions. We got rid of over 77 hundred rules in regulations. We got rid of those because they were no longer applicable in an innovative 21st-century space. You don't throw away the foundation of what has enabled the protections and innovations in the first place. What you do is improve upon them. What you do is get rid of the rules that are no longer applicable.

You don't just throw away years of what we've learned. Because again, what we see on this floor is based on years of what we've learned on the adapting of where we are headed. That's to ignore and pretend that all of those things aren't building blocks to innovative creativity and success. I think it's shortsighted.

O'Brien: And I won't lie and say I've read the entire repeal order. It is 546-something pages, I believe. But I did kind of peruse through it. I saw multiple times, stories cited, including from sites like Engadget. It seems as if they are trying to paint companies like Google who support net neutrality as being hypocritical and questioning their genuineness because they do things like remove YouTube from Amazon Echo's shows and other things. Does that line of argument strike you as convincing?

Clyburn: Let's be clear about what we are doing and what we have the authority to do. No. 1: We do not regulate air providers, which Google is one. And No. 2, which is really No. 1, is we're talking about access to the internet. So I don't want us to plate or confuse by how others who are not our internet service providers; how they conduct themselves. That's another agency and another conversation.

What we're talking about is your online experience and who is in charge of that experience. Is it you or is it your internet service provider? That is the question.

O'Brien: And I think critics say the repeal has put control in the hands of the service providers, and I'm gonna read a little bit from my notebook cause I wanna make sure I get these quotes right. So, not that long ago the chairman recorded a skit for the Federal Communications Bar event. He used to work at Verizon. He joked with a senior VP of Verizon that it was: "An awesome idea to "brainwash and groom a Verizon puppet to become the FCC chairman." How does that impact his credibility and the credibility of the commission as a whole?

Clyburn: [I'm] not trying to defend the chair because again, he can do that for himself. But that night is a very quirky night in telecommunications. We call it the Telecommunications Prom, basically for geeks that are in the space. And so it's sort of tongue-in-cheek. It's our own correspondents' dinner. It's that. Again, people are joking around. You can take issue whether the joke was funny. Just looking at that at in isolation, I might not put too much weight on that. But I do put all the weight on what he's been advocating for the past several years and what we did last month, which I think is problematic.

O'Brien: I think that what a lot of people took issue with is that in context it seems bad where Chairman Pai first announced the intentions to repeal net neutrality. I also believe Commissioner Michael O'Reilly suggested that no amount of public outcry could change their mind on it.

Clyburn: I'll respond to that in this way: There were millions, tens of millions, of legitimate comments. The majority of those were not in favor of changing or shifting the course of repealing on net neutrality. There were 47,000 complaints that were not entered into the record, that the majority obviously did not take into account that showed that the ecosystem is not perfect. Those to me are problematic. They are issues that run counter, I believe, to us taking everything into account. Particular are people's opinions about what direction I think we had.

So I do take issue with my colleagues ignoring all comments. Particularly the legitimate comments, because this impacts us. There are 300-plus million people who are impacted by the decision of three people. And I think, part of that evaluation matrix should include what you feel.

O'Brien: The impact seems to go beyond just this net neutrality repeal order as well. In November there was also repeal of rules around media conglomeration. Does that not also bode poorly for a future in which there is no net neutrality?

Clyburn: I think it's problematic. The lifeline item that is problematic. People who are economically disadvantaged ... their gateway to connectivity. You've got uncertainty, I believe, that will come at the state level. We've got a Universal Service Fund that is responsible for $4.5 billion a year going into local rural communities that would be impacted by our decision because we no longer have the strongest legal authority to ensure that money is flowing. So I know the headlines might read one way, but when you peel down; when you go to the next layer, there are a lot of everyday things that are happening that we take for granted in this country in terms of investments and local communities that are now at risk, because we moved in this direction.

O'Brien: And that lifeline also seems like it's potentially in danger?

Clyburn: I am fearful that the one, the only program that we have that is targeted for affordability at the FCC is on. I can hear the death rattles right now, and that's a shame. Because it's not just about infrastructure investment, though that's important. If you build it and I can't afford to come? That's problematic. I think we're putting at risk the one program that will address those millions of people that can't afford a dial tone and they certainly can't afford Broadband access. That's problematic for all of us.

O'Brien: I know you have a very busy schedule. I don't want to take too much more of your time, but I also don't want to end on such a downer note.

Clyburn: Oh no.

O'Brien: The Senate is about to vote on net neutrality again. What can people do if they really value those protections?

Clyburn: So, what I've been saying a lot is the FCC does not have the final word, and thank goodness for that. We've got a number of parties who said they will challenge this decision in court. I think if the court rules in favor of this innovation and listening to the will of the people, ensuring that we have certainty going forward, then I think that we have a positive feature. There's a congressional resolution that you mentioned that I think is on the [verge] of reaching critical mass in terms of numbers. I think if they weigh in and say, and listening to their constituents, I think that there's a positive future. I'm like you. I am an eternal optimist that the people's voices and opinions will reign supreme, and I'm looking forward to that day.

Teaching in Korea

*hi quick edit to inform you guys that i’m inttentionally messing up the spelling of the capital city of korea with a capital I instead of L bc of a stalker issue sorry to anyone looking for info about the job search process*

So I’m writing this post because as I went through the whole process of finding a job in Korea and getting my visa, I found a lot of conflicting information or gaps. This is my experience with the job search/documents/visa process. I started my process mid 2016 (after I graduated), applied to recruiters December 2016, and found a job and began the visa process a few weeks later. I’m starting my job February 22ndish, 2017 so this information is from this time.

Hagwons vs public schools I did a lot of research on these two types of teaching positions. As far as I understand, public schools have fewer hours and slightly lower pay. Hagwons are private academies. Because of this, they’re not as strictly regulated and there are a lot of sketchy ones. However, I wanted to be in SeouI (since I’ve lived there before) and programs that place you with public schools don’t really give you much of a say in where you’re placed. SeouI jobs typically go to experienced teachers, which I am not. I did so much research to ensure I didn’t end up signing a contract with a sketch school (since I’m not there yet I’m still not sure haha fml). Some good resources I used are Dave’s ESL Cafe, hagwon green list, and hagwon black lists [1] [2].

Recruiters So as someone who wasn’t currently in Korea, the simplest(debatable) way to find a hagwon job is to go through a recruiter. Essentially, a recruiter is a middle man that sends your resume to schools that are hiring. They are free for us to use. They make their money from the schools by placing people with these schools, so do your research!!! A good recruiter won’t place teachers with shitty schools, but just check out the schools you schedule interviews with for yourself to be safe. And hope for the best :) There are so many schools, so it can be hard to find info. I took “it’s not on the blacklist” as good enough to schedule an interview even when I couldn’t find info from any previous teachers. Now let me talk about my own experience with recruiters. Different recruiters have relationships with different hagwons, so apply to more than one. I did a lot of research on recruiters and ended up applying to SeouIESL, Adventure Teaching, and SayKimchi. I also thought Dreamworks Recruiting and Park English seemed decent, but I never got around to sending them my applications because I suck haha. Now I’ll talk about my experiences with each recruiter I applied to: SayKimchi: I never heard back from them. Ever. Whatever. Adventure: They seemed friendly when I spoke to them, but they were SO SLOW. I scheduled an interview with them and they canceled day of, so the process got delayed a week. I was aiming for March start dates and, because they took so long (despite them being first to contact me after I applied), they said they wouldn’t be able to place me until April or May. Then, they asked me to send all of my original documents to their office in Korea, which essentially makes it impossible for you to use another recruiter. If you’re 100% set on using just them, I suppose it would just speed up the process, but….. Funny enough, a week-ish after hearing nothing from me after requesting my docs they said they changed their policy and didn’t require docs sent until a contract was signed. I’m still not entirely sure if they really did have a policy change or if they were trying to dupe me into only being able to use them and changed course when I didn’t comply. My friend taught through them and her experience was just okay. One positive(?) is that they are based in Canada so the time difference is less extreme for me and they’re all native English speakers. Their website and emails are also laid out well compared to many others. SeouIESL: This is the recruiter I ended up using. Overall, my experience was positive. I was emailing with someone named Carolyn and she was very quick at responding and friendly. When I was scheduling interviews, if I emailed her during work hours I would often have a response within five minutes. Since I was super free at the time, I would set up interviews at 4:30pm my time (9:30am in SeouI) and do them at 7pm my time. Very fast. Their initial email actually got sorted into my spam(watch out for that, I guess) so I got in touch with them like a week late, but they scheduled my interviews lightening fast. She would send me a list of schools and their info and I could tell her which ones I wanted to apply to, and if they wanted an interview she would set it up quickly. She sent the info about the different stages at they came, so I was a little stressed. (ex: signed my contract and sent my docs, but had no idea how or when my flight would be booked until I knew exactly when my visa would be ready). Based on my experience, I would recommend them. They were fast, efficient, didn’t push me into anything, and were very accommodating of my desire to apply to jobs in SeouI.

I did two interviews. The first school had a very good reputation, but I didn’t get offered a contract. I must have been so awkward because I was so nervous. The second school offered my a contract and I took it. There wasn’t as much info about the school, but I still liked it better than others I sent my resume to. I hope I’m right :)))) I will update on how it goes later!

Documents: So many documents. First off, I’m a US citizen (specifically California) and the document requirements vary slightly by country. After I had signed a contract, my recruited had me send the following documents so the school could apply for my visa:

Apostilled FBI background check

Apostilled diploma

copy of passport

4 passport photos on light background

hard copy of resume

original contract, signed

health statement (a form she sent me)

E2 visa confirmation number application form (also sent to me)

These are mostly easy, but I have a little guidance on two items. Apostilled FBI background check: First off, you need to download the relevant forms. There are other guides on where and what you need exactly so I won’t get into detail :) You also need to be fingerprinted. I did this at one of my local police stations. One thing to keep in mind is that the background checks takes sooooo long. 3-4 months. It really put off my timeline because again, I suck and I procrastinate. Once you get it back, you’re still not done! You need to send it to get apostilled. And this is where I messed up again! There was some conflicting info online about where to send it. I argued with my mom, she won, and we ended up sending it to the California Department of State since I had to send my diploma there as well. WRONG!! IT MUST BE APOSTILLED IN WASHINGTON DC. DC. DC!!!! It’s a federal document, so it needs a federal apostille, not a state one. My recruiter told me that in the past, Korea accepted state apostilles, but not anymore. Don’t be dumb like me! Send it to DC! This takes another few weeks, so be prepared. You can expedite either of these processes by sending them through a legit expediter, but they cost money. If you’re in a hurry, it’s very worth it, but if you plan ahead it’s not necessary. Apostilled diploma: So to apostille a copy of your diploma (because plsss don’t send them your real one you’ll never get it back), you need to first notarize it. I went to my bank for that. The first employee said California notaries can’t notarize documents, only signatures. She also wanted to charge me :’D The second one said no problemo and did it for free! I can’t remember the name of the type of notarization, but it was something like I verify that it’s a real copy and she notarized that. Next, send it in to get apostilled. One important note is that is needs to be apostilled in the same state it was notarized in. There are also other guides for this out there if you’d like more details. :)

After you gather all of these and sign a contract, you send them off to Korea. Your school applies for your visa and you wait for your visa number. This can take around 2 weeks. Mine took a week and a half.

Visa The last thing you need to do is get your visa! I live within driving distance of the Korean consulate, so I went and walked everything in. I’m not sure how you would do it if you can’t take them in yourself, sorry~ After I got my visa number, I took the following forms to the Korean consulate:

visa processing fee (my consulate only accepts cash, so check!)

visa confirmation number

Some consulates may require more documents, such as bank statements, so make sure you check that too! I waited an eternity for my turn, gave all the relevant documents to the employee, waited another eternity for her to check everything, and then was told my visa (and passport) would be ready to be picked up in a week.

And that’s it! I picked up my visa on the specified day (much quicker than submitting the docs) and I was done!

Do You Need A Lawyer To Draw Up A Will?

A will is a legal document that directs who will receive your property when you die. The legal requirements are pretty simple. In order for your will to be valid, you must know what property you have and what it means to leave it to someone, then sign the document and have it witnessed according to the laws of your state. Some states allow you to make a handwritten will, called a “holographic” will. This will does not need to be witnessed, but it is much more likely to be challenged after you die. Many services have popped up that offer do-it-yourself will software or documents. These might work fine if you have little or no property, small savings or investments, and a traditional family tree, but the rest of the population should not use these programs. When it tested three leading online legal document preparation services, Consumer Reports concluded that none of the will-writing products was likely to entirely meet a person’s needs unless those needs are extremely simple. And likely you’ll need a lawyer to definitively determine whether or not your needs are indeed simple. Not hiring a lawyer can lead to problems that drag out your estate administration and cost money and create headaches for your heirs.

If you’ve decided to make a will, but you’re not sure how to go about creating it, you can either hire a lawyer to help you, or you can do it yourself. Both situations have distinct advantages; however, the right option for you depends on your specific circumstances.

Advantages of Writing Your Own Will

The primary benefit of drafting a will yourself is cost. Lawyers generally charge between a few hundred to several thousand dollars to draft a will. However, the price of do-it-yourself online will programs ranges from $20 to $200 or more, while writing the entire will yourself costs you nothing. If your assets and bequests are simple and straightforward, and you are careful to comply with state law, writing a will without a lawyer should generally not pose a problem.

Advantages of Hiring a Lawyer

Having a lawyer draft your will can buy you peace of mind. A lawyer can ensure that the will complies with state law, provides the best tax advantages for your estate and heirs, and accounts for particulars in your specific circumstances. In short, you may feel more assured that the document will stand up in court even if contested, and that your wishes will be carried out as desired.

If you chose to write a will without a lawyer, be sure to carefully research applicable state laws, particularly with respect to spousal inheritance laws, the signing of the will and any requirements relating to witness. In addition, write your wishes as clearly as possible because ambiguity in a will can render it invalid. If you use an online program to draft your will, read all instructions carefully and follow them to the letter. Some programs offer to have a lawyer review your documents for extra cost, an option that may give you additional peace of mind while saving you money.

When to Hire a Lawyer

In some circumstances, hiring a lawyer to draft your will is the least risky option. You should probably hire a lawyer if you have assets in multiple countries or states, have minor children, have been remarried, are in a same-sex relationship, own a small business, possess assets over $2 million or believe your will might be contested. A lawyer may also be a good idea if you do not understand the online forms or believe that the forms do not meet your particular needs.

Things You Should Know Before You Make Your Own Will

About two-thirds of Americans don’t have a written will, according to a 2015 survey by Lawyer. For most people, it’s something they put off or haven’t gotten around to yet. Age, unsurprisingly, is also a factor. The 2015 survey found only 30% of Americans aged 45-54 had a will, while 46% of those aged 55 to 64 had one. That makes sense if you consider that assets tend to increase as you age. If you have neither children nor any assets to speak of, and you’re comfortable having your closest blood relative, a parent or sibling receive your property outright, then you can probably get away without having a will. So if you’ve got plans for any of your assets, it can be worth the time and effort to develop some sort of plan, and get it all in writing even if you don’t hire a lawyer. “I’d rather have a DIY will because at least gives the beneficiary named a fighting chance.

• Understand Your State Rules: If you are going the DIY route, you’ll need to research your state’s laws. The rules can be quirky: Handwritten wills may not require any witnesses, for instance, but only half of states accept these wills as binding. A newly drafted, typed will now requires two witnesses’ signatures to be valid, wherever you are, but an older typed will that was executed, which used to require three witnesses, will be subject to the old requirements unless it is updated. You may also want to know if your state has an estate or inheritance tax and how to plan for it. About six states impose an inheritance tax; to be paid by any heirs who live in those states, while a dozen states impose an estate tax, which gets paid on your overall assets. (That’s on top of the federal estate tax, which affects only the wealthiest estates.) For instance, if you are dividing assets evenly between heirs, and one lives in a state with an inheritance tax, you’ll need to decide whether to set aside additional assets to cover the tax hit.

• Designate Beneficiaries: A will won’t cover all of your assets. A lot of people make up a will thinking it disposes of the whole estate. But it doesn’t. Anything that’s in joint name or payable to a named beneficiary, such as life insurance policies or 401(k) balances is outside the scope of a will. Before you even start a will, you should assign beneficiaries for as many accounts as possible. You can also create transfer-on-death or payable-on-death designations for checking, savings, and money market accounts, as well as certificates of deposit and U.S. bonds. Almost all states also allow you to name someone that will inherit any stocks, bonds or brokerage balances upon your death. And over a dozen states allow you to set up transfer-on-death stipulations for vehicles and real estate.

• Spell Things Out: Once you’ve taken care of beneficiary forms and checked out your state law, write out your intentions. A few guidelines:

I. Use the right language: You need to spell out who you are and the purpose of the document. Statements like “I declare that this is my last will and testament” and “I declare that I am of legal age to make this will, and that I am sound of mind” are not just for the movies. They’re critical to ensuring your will is taken seriously by your heirs and the courts, according to Utah law.

II. Be specific: If you are using a will to pass on your house, for instance, include the full address when identifying the property. For personal items, include a complete description. And use the full names of beneficiaries, rather than just referring to them as “my wife” or “my child.”

III. Name an executor you trust and tell them where to find your will: This is the person who will be wrapping up your affairs after your death and eventually distributing your assets. The American Bar Association recommends naming a secondary executor or a co-executor, in case your first choice is unable to carry out the task or predeceases you.

IV. Appoint a guardian for minor children: For each child, you should name one person as a guardian and another as an alternate. It’s perfectly legal (but not necessary) to pick different guardians for each child.

V. Spell out contingencies: Perhaps the most difficult aspect of a DIY will is thinking through all the contingencies. Say you’re leaving everything to your sister. But what if your sister predeceases you: Do you want the property to pass to her children? Or do you want to go to your other siblings? Describe the contingencies for each portion of your will.

• Consider an Upgrade: While a DIY will is better than nothing, lawyers argue that a professionally drafted document can do far more to protect your heirs, particularly if the beneficiaries you’d choose aren’t those provided by your state’s intestacy law. It might even cost less than you’d imagine. While a handwritten will won’t cost you a penny, in most states, a fill-in-the-blank formatted will, downloaded from a site will set you back about $100 while a will drafted by an attorney can cost, on average, only about $375. (For a larger, more complex estate, with federal estate tax considerations and specific trusts or entities such as family limited partnerships, the price tag will be $1,000 or more but complex estates should not be relying on DIY wills in the first place.) And at many firms, a will is billed as a flat fee, rather than an hourly rate. So if cost is a concern, you can call ahead to ask what the fees are.

What makes a will legal?

Any adult of sound mind is entitled to make a will. Beyond that, there are just a few technical requirements a will must fulfill:

• The will must be signed by at least two witnesses. The witnesses must watch you sign the will, though they don’t need to read it. Your witnesses, in most states, must be people who won’t inherit anything under the will. (If your state allows “holographic” wills, you don’t need witnesses.)

• You must date and sign the will. You don’t have to have your will notarized. In many states, though, if you and your witnesses sign an affidavit (sworn statement) before a notary public, you can help simplify the court procedures required to prove the validity of the will after you die. You do not have to record or file your will with any government agency, although it can be recorded or filed in a few states. Just keep your will in a safe, accessible place and be sure the person in charge of winding up your affairs (your executor) knows where it is. A lawyer does not have to write a will, and most people do not need a lawyer’s help to make a basic will -one that leaves a home, investments, and personal items to your loved ones, and, if you have young children, that names a guardian to take care of them. Creating a basic will rarely involve complicated legal rules, and most people can create their own will with the aid of a good software program or book.

How to Make a Will Without a Lawyer

A lawyer is helpful in the will creation process because you can be confident that your will has been drafted according to your state’s laws. An attorney’s help is not essential, however. If you feel confident that you can navigate your state’s laws and express your wishes on paper in a clear and unambiguous way, you can make your own will. Each state has different formal requirements, but you may opt to comply with the laws of every state to help ensure that your will is valid.

• Start a new word processing document or begin writing in ink on a blank sheet of paper. No state is particularly picky about the precise form your will takes, but most require it to be printed in ink.

• Specify that the document you are creating is your will. Title the document “Last Will and Testament” and identify yourself on the first line by stating your name, city and state of residence, birth date, and your intent to create a final will.

• Identify your spouse or most recent ex-spouse by name if applicable. Also supply the date and location of the marriage or divorce.

• State the number of children you have who are currently living and supply their names. If any of your children are minors who will need care in the event of your death, state that you select a specific individual to act as your children’s guardian. Appoint one or two additional individuals who may act as alternate guardians.

• Appoint an individual to act as your estate’s personal representative. This individual will handle the legal processes involving your will and oversee the disposition of your assets to your beneficiaries. Appoint one or two additional individuals who may act as alternate personal representatives.

• Identify clearly any property you are giving away and the person whom you would like to receive the property. Be as descriptive as you can, stating the beneficiary’s full name and relationship to you. When describing property, do so in a way that will be unambiguous. For instance, provide the exact address of a house rather than just saying “my home.”

• Print your name, your current city and state of residence, and the date at the bottom of your document. Include a line for your signature. Below this line, create three additional areas for the names, addresses and signatures of your witnesses.

• Sign your will in front of three disinterested witnesses. A disinterested witness is someone who is not a named beneficiary in your will. After you have signed, have the witnesses provide their information and signatures on the appropriate lines.
