O slender as a willow-wand! O clearer than clear water! O reed by the living pool! Fair River-daughter! O spring-time and summer-time, and spring again after! O wind on the waterfall, and the leaves’ laughter!’
So I've been really in love with the Goldberry design for the Magic the Gathering; Lord of the Rings Set and I wanted to draw her in my style.

You're really awesome
PROBLEM: I want to make magic decks with my cards irl, but I have no one to play them against.
SOLUTION: Make an entire custom deck that can play itself to more or less replicate an opponent.
I decided to put the rules in card form as conspiracy cards, but it turns out that rules should be written as rules, not cards, so I had to make extensive notes about each of them (except Industrial Expansion, that one is actually effects instead of rules). I also just enjoy talking about my design choices.
Tumblr media
Notes: Creating waste tokens instead of playing lands is basically free card advantage, as well as preventing mana screw/flood. The bot is supposed to have more raw strength than the player, so this isn’t a huge problem, but the starting hand size reduction and 5 land limit are still needed balance it.
Also, I know wastes isn’t actually a basic land type, but it makes the card so much cleaner so "Wastes token" is a predefined token here just like Treasure and Food.
Tumblr media
Notes: There’s probably some awkward edge cases here too. I fixed the only one I could find (involving Recycle Bin), but there might be more. The main guiding rule in playing the bot is "don’t make it do obviously dumb stuff." The cards are balanced around the rigid rules, so bad decisions are okay, but sometimes there are plays that are so worthless or actively counterproductive that you really ought to step in. Edge cases should be resolved in whatever way makes the bot play best. Ideally, you shouldn’t have to think too hard about what the bot does; it’s supposed to be automatic, after all. The other guiding rule is "make this similar to a normal game of Magic."
Tumblr media
Notes: Much, much simpler than Defense Protocol. Still some vagueness, but good enough to prevent swinging into the opponent’s 4/4 with a 3/3. It applies on a creature-by-creature basis; if you have a 3/3 with flying and a 2/1, and your opponent has a 4/4, the 2/1 won’t attack, but the 3/3 will. If you have a 2/1 and a 5/4, only the 5/4 will attack since the 2/1 can be fully blocked by the 4/4.Non-lethal battles are tricky; if you have a 2/1 and the opponent has a 0/3, you shouldn’t attack because then you’re just tapping down your 2/1. But if you have a pair of 2/1s, you should attack for the free damage. You could reinterpret the "such that they lose no life" bit, but that would result in the rules telling you to swing your creatures into into a 4/4. Basically, use your best judgement; this stuff is too complicated to write out. You’re smart enough.
Tumblr media
Notes:
This card would be a fucking nightmare to properly template. Good thing it’s a rule and not actually a card. The vague wording can probably result in lots of edge cases, but this card is basically meant to say "The bot makes the best blocks possible" so use your best judgement in those cases. Activated abilities that boost a creature should be taken into account if mana is open for them. A version of the blocking rules not in card form is given below.
Priority 1: If you can block in such a way that your life total remains above 0, you must do so.
Priority 2: If a blocker can deal lethal damage to an attacker and survive, it must block that creature.
Priority 3: If a blocker can deal lethal damage to an attacker, or if it can survive, it must block that creature.
Priority 4: Don’t block.
Misc 1: If multiple attackers are tied for the highest block priority, the blocker must block the creature with the highest power. If tied, highest toughness, then highest mana value, then choose randomly.
Misc 2: Multi-block an attacker only if it has menace or a similar ability, only with the minimum number of blockers, and only if it falls under a blocking priority (ex. it’s threatening to win the game, or it can be destroyed, or both your blockers survive). Anything else could be a nightmare to calculate.
And that's all the rules/conspiracies, which should allow for playing against the bot while making as few decisions as possible. Here's the cards. The bot's deck consists of 4 copies of each card for a clean 60 deck, compatible for testing against mill.

Despite how WOTC/Hasbro have sworn off using AI several times (and then got caught using it, like here or here), and then casually firing +1000 employees this year (many of them being artists), their CEO is predictably musing about how to incorporate it, and readily making use of the technology for some other products, and testing how it may be of use for DnD/MtG.
I had mentioned it was just a matter of time, and even when some people were very eager that WOTC would never, well. Who would've thought. It's the same company that showed again and again no respect for its audience, their creators or even the biggest fans. (The OGL mess was about a year ago. They sent the Pinkertons to a fan less than a year ago). Because delivering a quality product isn't really their goal, nor is it to actually compensate artists fairly.
I don't think this is breaking news, but I'm mostly bringing it up in case people wonder where they stand. They also have a poll where you can tell what you think about them (no actual written feedback, only "pick from these 5 options"). And as a final note Margaret Weiss (creator of the Dragonlance, who had some big disputes with them- Including a lawsuit towards WOTC) has come forward to tell how little WOTC has respected her series. Not long ago a book set in the setting (Fizban's Treasury of Dragons) got released, and it cared very little about being respectful towards the world or her work. Which tracks with their usual behaviour, because Eberron was also mangled quite badly.
Just, as a reminder, there's many wonderful TTRPGs that are far more worth to support monetarily, or even available to play for free. (Recently all of the PF2e remaster has been posted on Archives of Nethys- A page that has all the mechanics from all the books for free, which is endorsed by the company itself.)
But yeah. As a small creator and artist, it's surely lovely to see how much the biggest TTRPG company out there respects us.

i finally learned how to play let's goooo i'm so excited
my first actual mtg tip: find a friend who likes deckbuilding and they'll build you a deck. you don't even have to ask them. they'll just do it.
Magic the Gathering tip: learning to play is the easy part. putting up with other mtg players long enough to play the game is where it gets tricky.

A friend shared this in our discord and I asked him to send it to you, but he doesn't use Tumblr, so I asked if I could. It was far better written than some of thoughts and seemed worth sharing with you. "My Magic Cards' Lament As you all know, I love me some cube. Its my favorite way to play magic and, more importantly, my favorite way to /think/ about magic. I enjoy theory crafting cubes on the Cobra and imagining different possibilities. But I've noticed something recently: I've become desensitized to the aesthetic. And this isn't by choice. Scrolling through scryfall I find myself reading over UB cards from fallout or assassins creed or dr who or warhammer and thinking "this is a really unique effect and would fit perfectly in this cube". But it hurts to put them in. As someone who's genuinely obsessive/compulsive its a very bothersome incongruity. Sometimes I put them in, sometimes I don't, but I have to start ignoring aspects of the card for my own wellbeing which is often difficult. Regardless of my decision, I find that I shrink the card down to only its mechanics and its interaction with other cards' mechanics, and lose touch with the great aesthetic and world-building that got me so excited about magic in the first place. UW is not a priority to them, and if they even do make Magic equivalents, it would be released 2-3 years from now. I believe this to be a serious threat to the longevity of MTG, and it has me leaning more into other TCGs."
Universes Beyond might be the latest topic, but this is a note I've gotten many times over the years. A player writes to me that they love the game, but there's this element in the game that they have problems with. If only the element weren't there, their enjoyment of the game would increase greatly. But there are a lot of players for whom that element is something that makes the game more enjoyable for them.
The core problem is this. It's much easier to add things to the system than take them away. To use my buffet metaphor. We can add seafood because there are many players who have a better meal if seafood is there, but there's not a lot we can do for people who feel the buffet is lessened for seafood being in it. Yes, if enough people have issues with seafood, we can take it away, but what do we do when a majority likes the seafood and a small minority dislikes it?
I can encourage players to not eat the seafood, and even find other players who all promise to not eat the seafood when eating at the same table, but it's not something I can address while still keeping all the seafood lovers happy.
My answer is part of what makes a community is the understanding that others will enjoy things you don't and that things bringing happiness to others is a net gain for the community. Find the foods you love at the buffet and accept that the foods you don't like being there makes the customers of the buffet as a whole happier.

More steddie dads content I really want some Eddie centered like teaching the girls guitar or dnd especially since Robbie is like him I think that they’d bind over a shared interest and he’d teach her stuff from when he was younger!
lol yeah the last few have def been more steve-centric (and also kind of a bummer) so let's switch up the vibe a bit
So, yes, Robbie is Eddie's daughter through and through.
She's stubborn and brazen and loud in her opinions and beliefs. She can be a little flippant about other peoples' feelings when she's not careful, and sometimes struggles to acknowledge the validity in other experiences outside of her own - in other words, she's Eddie to a T. She's even got the same big curly hair (though it's way more well-maintained than Eddie's had been thanks to Steve).
As for hobbies, Robbie is the only one out of Eddie and Steve's three daughters to really take an interest in music.
Eddie is thrilled about this, especially in the early days when Robbie is seven or eight and dying to try out any instrument they put in front of her. She has a natural proclivity for nearly all of them, which is fucking wild to Eddie, but the violin is the one she takes a particular shining towards.
Eddie can't say he'd ever had a resounding interest in classical music, but he wants to support Robbie so he dives into it right along with her.
That shit...
is metal as hell.
Seriously rad.
Eddie anxiously waits for her to be old enough to try out his old electric guitar. He waits until she's fifteen years old - the same age he'd been when he'd gotten his first electric - and then he digs it out of storage and bestows it upon her like the exquisite treasure it truly is.
In true teenager fashion, Robbie is...unimpressed.
She humors him for a bit, and to her credit, she does seem at least a bit intrigued by the almost forty-year-old guitar, but when Eddie offers to show her how to play, she only shrugs.
"I don't want to mess with my technique," she tells him, as if she's not shattering his heart into a bazillion tiny pieces.
"What does that even mean?"
"I dunno," she shrugs again.
Later, once the guitar has been safely put away, Eddie recounts the exchange to Steve.
"I just don't get it," he laments, "She'd be so good at it! I don't get why she won't just give it one chance."
"She's you, my love," Steve tells him, "Are you forgetting all the years you spent rejecting everything outside of what you deemed acceptable. You grew out of it. She will too."
So Eddie resigns himself to waiting it out. Robbie ends up deciding she wants make a career out of playing the violin, and she goes to New York to get her bachelors in music.
Just as Steve had predicted, once she hits college and grows up a little bit, she starts seeing the value in the world outside of the small corner of it she occupies. She comes home from her first semester regaling them with all the things she'd learned, and she catches Eddie by surprise when she asks him to bring out his old electric guitar.
Eddie and Robbie jam in the basement for like five hours before Steve insists they go the fuck to bed, and that "Hazel has school in the morning, in case you lunatics forgot."
(As for dnd, looking at it from the perspective of teenage girls, Steve and Eddie's kids absolutely do not want to think about their dad DM-ing. Eddie can't even breathe the wrong way without his daughters calling him out for being cringe or whatever, never mind executing a whole campaign. They'd die of embarrassment - guaranteed.
Robbie does get super into MTG in college, which Eddie absolutely takes as a personal F-You from his daughter. He gets his revenge by refusing her offers to teach him to play, even though it honestly sounds like a fuckin' blast, but that's a hill he's willing to die on)

I don't actually play MTG, so I'm probably missing something, but Protection Racket doesn't actually interfere with your regular draws, right? Is the issue that it messes up your tutors, or is it just not worth the mana spent?
Tumblr media
it doesn't mess with your regular draws, no. the issue is that it "draws" THREE times per upkeep (in a regular 4 player EDH game). in a deck where you play it without any added shenanigans, your turn will start with "drawing" three cards off of Protection Racket, then drawing your real card for turn during your draw step. therefore, at baseline, roughly 75% of the cards you would have otherwise drawn can just be vetoed by your opponents. i cannot overstate how bad giving your opponents veto power over just one of your draws is, and this does it THREE TIMES. PER UPKEEP. EVERY UPKEEP.
and that's just in a deck where you're playing it normally with your one upkeep per turn. in Obeka decks, it gets even worse, because you're taking WAY more than one upkeep per draw step. like, imagine the last scenario where you just have Protection Racket out, but then you hit someone for 2 with Obeka. this gives you two more upkeeps, which "draws" you six more cards. except, again, your opponents have veto power over all of those cards, so they're going to make you not actually draw the ones that would've won you the fucking game (along with any lands because those get exiled for free so congrats you're mana screwed forever now). oh wow, you drew Fury of the Horde and Hatred to create another combat step for free and then kill someone with commander damage? no you didn't, actually.
i know there are people reading this ready to write a reply/anon about how it's not really "free" to veto the card draw because they pay life for it, and to them i say: you know most of the cards in a Voltron deck should represent more face damage to your opponents than their CMC (i will be cold in the ground before calling it "mana value"), right? even in the bonkers magical Christmasland scenario where you manage to hit someone hard enough to "draw" literally your entire deck (probably killing them with commander damage), there is a very good chance that your remaining two opponents will have enough life left to exile any followup plays you would have drawn (extra combat step spells, X-cost instants while you have a Braid of Fire out, etc) and team up to kill you on the crackback.
also you raise a good minor point with the tutors thing. tutors like Mystical and Vampiric that put the card on top of your deck aren't completely fucked over by this card, but it does make it impossible for you to do the usual play pattern of holding up mana for a turn cycle and then casting them on the end step of the player before you. you'd have to actually spend the mana on your own turn during your upkeep after Protection Racket resolves, giving you 1 less mana to work with that turn. barely worth mentioning but it is obnoxious.
tl;dr: stop trying to make fetch Protection Racket happen. if you want a 3 mana black card draw enchantment that scales with multiple upkeeps, you want Phyrexian Arena. if you want to draw 3 cards per upkeep, you want Struggle for Project Purity (yes, letting your opponents draw cards is better than letting them pay life to veto your draws). if you want to have your opponents lose a bunch of life when you take a lot of upkeeps, cast one of the 15 other cards in your deck that does that without making the damage optional. stop handing your opponents the MTG equivalent of the fucking Millenium Eye on crack

Played my first game of MtG yesterday (5 players, free for all, commander, 6 hours). When the giant and I were the last two standing, I attacked him with such force he didn't even bother counting the damage I dealt to see if he survived, AND I went up to 43 life points. (we all started with 40)
Up until it was just me & husband, I felt so bad going after any given person (why my spouse? why my metamour? why the guy who cooked dinner? there's always a good argument for attacking someone else). but once it was 1v1 I relaxed & got on with SMASH That said it's freakish I won this way. I only want to do 1v1 in the future, and I can't say I care for commander (don't really see what the commander is adding here). I had an overpowered enchantment (got a creature of choice back from the graveyard at the end of every turn, although they'd exile if they died a 2nd time) no one had a counter for.
A game where you "bring your own deck" bemuses me. Seems like you can bring arbitrarily good cards and buy your way to victory. People have assured me that this doesn't dominate as a factor but I frankly can't understand why not.

Does Anyone Have Any MtG Collections They Don't Want Anymore?
Tumblr media
With us going into the 130°F Sonoran Desert summer in our squatter town, we're going to have to stay in all the time in our trailer and we need something to do to pass the time that won't divert electricity from our cooling system.
My girlfriend and I love to play Magic the Gathering and we both collect the cards.
If anyone has any collections they no longer care about or cards they'd want to gift me I'd love you forever and even help pay for shipping!
Message me and I'll send you my address to send cards.

I love thinking abt l&co doing semi mundane shit bc they're always gonna make it chaotic. for example:
- l&co learning how to drive
- l&co doing their shopping (they always end up w 10 different items they definitely don't need and an uneaten bag of carrots bc george likes to snack on them but only when the mood strikes him which is once every other month)
- l&co game night (lucy and lockwood make the wrong decision to choose monopoly and george absolutely fucking kills them. like there wasn't even a fighting chance. he also tries to teach them to play mtg and goes insane bc he doesn't know if lockwood is legitimately not understanding the rules or if he's just not following the rules to fuck w him)
- l&co trying to deal w a pipe bursting (george is screaming, lockwood is trying to patch it up w duct tape and sheer force of will and lucy is calling barnes- this is also happening at 3am)
etc etc. they're just so silly to me

You uuuuuhhhhhh are cool
So there's a relic on Path of Champions called Voidborne Carapace that give the equipped champion "Whenever any unit dies, grant me its positive keywords" and Evolve (Once you've had 6+ different positive keywords in play, grant me +2/+2). I always wondered what to use it for; Evolve is much harder to trigger when you can't choose what cards to put in your deck, and getting keywords from dying units doesn't seem that good. However, I've since realized the synergy it has with 2 champion's star powers:
Bard is a champion based a round buffing allies in your hand, and has the power Caretaker's Blessing: "Whenever you summon a unit with buffed stats, grant it a random keyword." This makes evolving super easy, and can let Bard collect up all the random keywords that your allies have, making him a monstrosity with high stats and a ton of keywords.
The other, much more interesting option, is Elise. Elise's 3-star power is Spider Queen 2: "When allies attack, grant allies Spiderlings everywhere +1/+0 and the positive keyword of allied champions." For context, spiderlings are 1/1s that Elise is really good at summoning lots of, and "everywhere" means permanently, for the rest of the game, even on spiderlings that are summoned later. Elise's deck only has reliable access to 2 keywords, so evolving is fairly difficult, but oh my the rewards...
First of all, copying the keywords of dying enemies (and any other keyworded units you pick up) allows you to permanently transfer those keywords to your spiderlings. That could be pretty nice, granting stuff like quick attack, overwhelm, brash, challenger, spellshield, etc., but it's unreliable. You also transfer evolve to your spiderlings. And while turning on evolve is difficult, if you ever manage it, then all your spiderlings get +2/+2 for the rest of the game, making you basically unstoppable with your army of itsy-bitsy spiders.
The only problem is that I don't have Voidborne Carapace nor Elise's 3-star power.
#asks#imagine casting an Inspired Charge every single turn in mtg#that's what evolving all your spiderlings would be like#and combine that with the natural power buff of Spider Queen and all the other keywords you've collected and WOW#absolutely ridiculous#at least it WOULD be absolutely ridiculous if i had my toys!#also ridiculous would be the relic Galeforce which grants scout which allows the unit to attack an additional time#put that on Elise and you get to trigger Spider Queen twice for +2/+0 AND you grant scout to all your spiderlings forever!#Galeforce is so OP that they nerfed it by shuffling the champion into the deck at the end of the turn#but that would hardly matter because you already granted scout to all your spiderlings!#which means THEY get to attack twice to trigger Spider Queen twice and get +2/+0 every round!#and the only problem with this is that I DON'T HAVE GALEFORCE EITHER >:O#anyway i looked up Voidborne Carapace and apparently it used to not even give Evolve it only let you take the keywords of dead units#which. is very much NOT worth a rare relic slot#the payoff would be way too low for the chance it has of doing nothing#plus you could just use a relic that gives you the keyword you want most instead of using such an unreliable method#100% needed the buff#even with evolve it's only worth using on a few certain champions#i'm guessing it's beastly on Bard because of how reliably you can get a bunch of different keywords#and when you get to star 3 on Bard your buffed allies get 2 random keywords so it gets good even faster#but it's a very interesting way to take advantage of Spider Queen 2's keyword transfer ability#elise only has fearsome so it's kinda meh#when she levels up she gets challenger but she also gets an ability that gives all your spiders fearsome and challenger#so there's not really much point to Spider Queen 2#so the trick is finding ways to get other good keywords onto your spiderlings#i'm sure it'll be really interesting to play with once i hit 3 star#fortunately Spider Queen 1 still gives the +1/+0 so i still get to enjoy my unstoppable spiderling army :D

AITA for wanting my partner to kiss me after we argue?
My (23nb) partner (25nb) and I rarely argue. We've worked a lot on our relationship over the 4 years we've been together. But when we do disagree, it's about our interpretations of media.
They're a Star Wars person, I'm a Star Trek person, we usually don't care about that. But when we've disagreed about something like Avatar: The Last Airbender (not the only example) we tend to get passionate.
My partner is more "by the book" than I am, they tend to look at our discussions from a very logistical, mechanics-based view. They love playing MTG and Warhammer and other very rules-heavy games. I'm a writer so I look at things from a story point of view and I argue from a writer's perspective, like how the writers build the season arc.
I do not care about what we disagree about, no media is worth my relationship with my partner. But what I do get upset about is when we do disagree and when we do discuss these disagreements, there are times when my partner gets frustrated enough I guess that they don't kiss me goodnight. I need to take some time every night to decompress before I go to bed and I get upset when they don't kiss me goodnight just because of a stupid disagreement about a TV show.
I love my partner and none of this really matters, but we both get passionate. I've told them that not kissing me goodnight makes me sad - and I understand it's just a simple thing but it's the little things that reinforce the relationship right? - so they know that I want to get a goodnight kiss. And I'm realising this is a stupid thing to get upset about but I'm in my feelings and I want to throw it out there: Am I The Asshole for wanting my partner to kiss me goodnight even after we disagree?
What are these acronyms?
