Stucky, Fandom Longevity, and "Primacy Bias"

There’s this post that's been floating around the past few days about how the Stucky fandom in its heyday produced fic and art masterpieces like they were all collectively possessed by an unprecedented spirit of creative insanity. It’s a good, fun post and I agree with the person who wrote it. (not rb'ing because I didn't want to hijack their post with something that's only tangentially related).

It was indeed a magical time and the creative output in both quantity and quality in the two-year period following the release of CA:TWS is—with perhaps a few exceptions—unmatched by anything that I’ve seen before and since. However, going through the notes on that post, I noticed something that left me a little irritated and quite frankly sad since it is in congruence with, and to a certain extent the confirmation of something that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately.

For one thing, there are so many people in the notes expressing sentiments along the lines of “it was such a wonderful time; I wish I could go back; I miss these fics; I want to read these fics again,” etc., etc., you get it. And it feels a little silly pointing this out, but…you can just do that? Almost all of these fics are still right there, waiting for you to be (re)read. Yes, a lot of people left the fandom after The Great Devastation of 2019, but their stories didn’t just disappear. It's not like there is now a big, black hole where the Steve/Bucky tag used to be on AO3. So, if you miss these fics and you want to revisit them—just do it. Chances are the authors will be delighted that people are still finding and enjoying their stories all these years later. And—since apparently this needs saying, too, judging from the notes on that post: A lot of people seem to be very concerned with losing ‘coolness points’ for openly admitting that they still miss the ship and often feel tempted to dip their toes back into the Stucky pool. I don’t know how to tell you this, but if someone tries to shame you for simply enjoying or missing something, they are an asshole. Not to mention that all this is happening on tumble.com—'coolness' doesn't exactly live here. And that is a good thing, to be clear. Fandom is not about being cool. It’s about being as enthusiastic, as silly, as absolutely fucking unhinged about the things you love as you want to be. So, stop caring what other people think and enjoy yourself.

The other thing is that there seems to be a pretty widespread misconception that the Stucky fandom hasn’t produced any good fanworks after 2016.

First, that is patently and demonstrably untrue. There is so much incredibly good fanfiction and fanart still out there. Not as much as back in the day, sure, but it still exists. And more is being posted every day! Even some of the OG Big Names are still around. One of the most beloved Stucky series that started all the way back in 2014 was updated as recently as December of last year. The artist, who I believe the op is referring to as creating ‘baroque’ paintings, posted their latest Stucky art not even two months ago.

Second, I find this “primacy bias” more than just a little insulting to the many hardworking and incredibly talented people who are still putting their blood, sweat, and tears into creating for this community. And it’s one thing if people who have long left the fandom believe or say something like this, but it’s frankly irritating when I see people who are still very much active—and therefore definitely should know better—feed into that same false myth. Yes, it sucks that the Stucky ship isn’t as big as it used to be, but that doesn't mean there isn't any 'fresh talent' to be found anymore. I’m also not saying we shouldn’t still celebrate and recommend older works—I do it all the time! And it sure as hell doesn't mean everyone has to reblog absolutely everything all the time, either. Your blog, your rules.

But maybe we should put a little more focus on the good things, on the creators and the community we have now, especially if we want that community to still exist in another ten years. I mean, imagine you’re a person who’s just gotten into the fandom (because yes, there are indeed still new people discovering Stucky all the time) and one of the first things you’re being told is “eh, nice that you're here, but you’re about 7 years late; the big party is already over.” Does that seem like a fun space to hang out in to you?

So. Let’s all—and I do not exclude myself from this because God knows, I love to complain—spend a little less time mourning the ‘good old days’ that are never coming back anyway, and instead focus our attention on enjoying and appreciating both the incredible treasure chest of an archive we have AND the wealth of high-quality art and fic that is still being created by this wonderful community every single day. With this in mind:

Man, the longer I spend in this fandom, the more uncomfortable I get with asking-for-boundaries culture. I was just rotating that last night and trying to figure out why people popping up in TTS makes me want to snatch my headphones off my ears and enter a monastery and never go on the internet again, and I think I identified part of it?

Part of why I get so uncomfortable, I think, is that it gives the impression that the creator is responsible for what the fandom creates? They’re the arbitrator of the fandom now. Like anything they don’t specifically call out is definitely okay to do and show on main, and anything they do say is okay is definitely okay to show them, instead of there being a creator-fandom divide, and people being able to think for themselves about things and going “okay, this fic involves a creator being tortured to the point of a psychological break, maybe that one is for the fandom and don’t show it to the creator”. People asking creators (who let me remind you are frequently not old enough to drink in the states and often barely old enough to vote) to weigh in on esotera instead of thinking for themselves about what is and isn’t for public consumption.

And like in a particularly painful stream of my memory, Tubbo was being asked questions where he’d be a jerk if he said no (asking about fictives and people with delusions that they were him, so stuff outside of their control), so of course he said yes that was within his boundaries— but how pressured into that might he feel and how actually comfortable is he with that? No idea!? But people think it’s okay to show it to him now cause it’s “within his boundaries”. Or a different time people were asking questions with clear intent to trap him/get him to say that things weren’t okay (people tattling on cuddling art on twitter), and while he said that he was okay with anything that wasn’t NSFW, the person was clearly looking for a clip to use to tell people to stop, hoping that he’d be uncomfortable, and like. AHHHH.

Like a, how is that actually respectful to the creator? And related to the “why are you bringing this to their attention they don’t need to know,” is it actually any of the creator’s business if someone’s writing agre vent fic for an audience of fifty subs on Ao3? Like just think for yourself about if that’s okay or not and if you come down on yes, tag it so that people don’t have to see it if they don’t want to, that seems to be FAR more sane than showing up in TTS asking someone who plays video games for a living how they feel about kidfic or gore art.

AND that’s not even getting into the issue of people asking creators to weigh in on stuff they have no idea about— half these creators are moving in such different online circles that they still think Harry Potter is pog, why do you think they’re going to have a nuanced take on pronoun discourse or trans hcs or QPPs?

Anyways AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH TTS is of the devil and we need to stop asking creators to cross over the fandom-creator boundary.

Sorry for being sudo inactive!! I’ve been on a trip, where I got to see Sweeney Todd on Broadway!! Genuinely such a good show. If I went on about how amazing it was, we’d be here all day

But on the note of me being gone for a bit, ya boi has been crafting! Along with some more ramblings as usual-

The chapter one outline of the Alley Cat AU has been completed! Now it’s on to drawing some panels out and finalizing the draft! Of course I will probably post more concept work before then, as some details still need to be worked out. But we are making headway!

I’m going to also work on making a masterpost here soon, so that way everything is in one neat spot. But the story will be hosted here! Here’s some more smaller concept work to tide you guys over until the next post! I obviously want to finish a couple chapters but I’ve also started work on a chapter explaining how Morro met his cat! Originally the cat was unnamed but I think Wisp works well for them, I will try to finish the reference sheets for all of the characters before I post any chapters.

I’m also going to finish up my work on chapter one, before posting any of it. So that way the wait between isn’t as awful (fun fact that’s been my New Year’s resolution- to try and post more-) but please be patient with me, I’ve never really worked on a project this big before and I am a full time college student with a job. So I will do my best!

I want to let you guys know as well, the ninja and their dynamic with Lloyd will stay pretty similar to that of the show. With them obviously being suspicious of Lloyd and his “cat”, but because they find him and Lloyd doesn’t try to do anything regarding the Serpentine (because Morro shook some sense into him-) there’s no residual “you unleashed the snakes on us-“ vibes. Instead right off the bat Kai takes one look at Lloyd and says “You are now my little brother. You cannot deny this.”, adding more fluff.

That also means we have to find another person who unleashes the serpentine. Because plot reasons and all that jazz, I’m working on it but I think it would be funny if Jay did it by accident or one of the other darkly boys did it. I’ll toy with both ideas and some other ones before I settle on it, I have time. I hope.

I’ve got some other things I’m cooking up, some Ninjago related, others pertaining to other fandoms I’m in.

Aside from that, I also have a Redbubble! There’s some stuff in there I’m reworking, so a minder and apology for that, but I’m going to try to get some more Ninjago works posted up there. Along with some original works! Here’s the link if you’d like to check it out!

I haven’t been posting much asks because I’ve been getting concerning things sent to me. Decided to just address it.

Some Discourse talk ahead.

Liking “fixed” or “switch” top / bottom dynamics isn’t wrong in any sense. At the end of the day it’s what people are into. You may not like some, but it’s still not harming anyone. A lot of you act like it’s a big crime when someone is staunch in their preferences because you have this world view that apparently everyone switches and you want people to like everything, overlooking the fact that people are different. Preferences will vary IRL, Not everyone will like the same things.

A lot of people like to project onto or relate to certain characters. I do (Tom… Draco.. lol). I don’t think it takes much brainwork to understand why someone would not want to see a character they relate to to be penetrated. Or why someone irl is uncomfortable with being penetrated lmao.

However I know other people are into that, So I mute and block accordingly. I’m a huge fan of blocking/muting what you don’t want to see. Fandom is supposed to be an escape of what you like, not things that will make you feel bad. What I am not a fan of is people knowing my preferences, or even knowing why I don’t like the characters I project onto to bottom, and still harass and send me rude asks that target that specifically.

I believe people are free to enjoy what they like, just remember to tag and stay in your lane- aka smth Western fans need badly bc most English spaces are infested with drama. A lot of you don’t know how to act, much less respect others because most of your responses are wishing death to someone or other horrible things.

I just want to enjoy loving Harry Potter (the character lol I have no love for the franchise) without strangers (most of you adults) being obsessed over what? My fictional tastes and irl preferences. And resorting to stalking and harassment bc my will to curate my online experience bothers you is honestly pathetic. You want to dedicate the limited time of your life being a chronically online asshole? How miserable. For the sake of yourself and any future people who you’ll burden with your immaturity, go outside and touch grass. You lot desperately need it.

With that said, anons will be turned off for the time being. My main twitter will be offline for a bit because of IRL stuff, but the backlogged drafts of art I have saved here on tumblr will continue to be posted. I just really want to see more bottom Harry 💕

💛 Q: What is this blog for?

This blog is about the managers from Inazuma Eleven because I feel like they’re not as loved as they should be in the fandom. This will act as an ask blog where u can ask each of the 4 managers questions, I will also try to include art whenever I can!

⚽Q: What Canon does it follow?

This follows the og canon, where Haruna joins as a first year into Raimon and Fuyuka is introduced during the FFI and joins Raimon after, questions can be asked or set at any time in the first 3 seasons or even in go or between that time.

🧡Q: what characters can I ask?

Natsumi, Haruna, Aki and Fuyuka (I might add the go managers later on)

💛Q: How many asks can I send?

Ask as much as you’d like!

⚽ Q: What can I ask?

You can ask whatever you’d like, wether it’s about a characters friendship with another, their hobbies or what they like to do. It’s really limitless although they are minors so keep it sfw. (which should be expected lol)

Of course not, you can ask an individual character anything you’d like

This blog is to share my love for the managers as they’re a female minority in the Inazuma franchise and I live for strong representation of girls in shounen, girlhood and all that (watch the barbie movie)

This is going to be a super long explanation but I really just want to clarify? And try not to misconstrue what I think my tags meant in more “critical-thinking” terms lol:

I think my tags were more…targeted from recently seeing the influx of takuya/smap-inspired posts but their…judgment/lost judgment related. I really hate calling this type of thing out and being complainy but I actually think its made me more bitter about the fandom? To be horribly blunt?

When I see these posts, I can’t help but have the initial feeling that maybe some still only care about Takuya’s piece in SMAP…when there’s literally four other men (sometimes five) standing right next to him. This isn’t new though, like if you look at SMAP’s history, its a chronic thing with Takuya being the star compared to the others.

And…this isn’t me assuming they aren’t fans of them all but…I guess the main thing is that if the only smap post I see from someone are just…Yagami…it kind of hurts, I guess?

I think maybe it’s because smap means a lot (a lot) to me and I wish the opportunity was used to give them love and support, rather than seeing a chance to play Yagami dress up.

I am not automatically anti-any of this. Using anything SMAP as inspiration for JE/LJ content: art, fic, etc etc etc is super sweet to me and I love all the little references to Takuya’s IRL career. It really shows how Yagami is a pretty multi-layered protagonist, especially when you find how many references to Takuya’s IRL career got squeezed into these games. Like RGG went all-in with the references, so should fic writers, artists, etc etc if they’d like to!

I know I’ll probably get killed for this but I have a theory why LU is the most popular Link Meet AU.

First off, if an AU is drawn instead of written, it’s going to be more popular, because strong visuals give people more stuff to latch onto. Especially if the art is really cool, colored, and distinctive. Each Link in LU has a distinctive design that makes them visually easy to tell apart and a unique skill-set they bring to the table. I know some folks don’t like that Wind and Four are composites of multiple games which are spread over several canonical centuries, but part of why it works is because the games they encompass have very similar looking Links (I’m sorry Spirit sweetie). Every character wears something that naturally exists in their game, but is visually distinct as “them”. Even Four, who looks the most different from his in-game sprites, is still modeled after the stained glass window from Minish Cap. An outsider to Link Meet AUs but a knowledge of Zelda games (like myself) can easily walk into the AU and say “oh ok that’s the Link from Twilight Princess and that’s the one from Skyward Sword” pretty much at a glance.

But there are lots of really cool well drawn distinctive Link Meet AUs out there, so why is this one doing numbers? I think it’s also because there’s very little extra headcanon attached to the LU boys in the comic itself. Everything about them is pretty closely tailored to their games, from appearance to skills to personalities. The only completely canon relationship in LU iirc is Malon and Time are married and Sky and Sun are dating. Most AUs I see add in some of the artists own flair or ships or identities into the Links, which is great, but it can create a more limited sandbox for others to play in. Like if an AU has RavioLi as canon or it’s definite that Link and his Zelda are related, then people who ship ZeLink can’t put their own spin on things. If you’re adding a gender identity or disability or something to your AU, then people feel uncomfortable trying to change that in fanworks, and may not engage as much because of it. And especially if you have like, a big extra non-game mechanic going on that runs how the Links are meeting that people may be intimidated by. Fandom lives in the ability to adapt and project a little. The more you make “canon” to your AU, the fewer wild ideas people will run off with linked to it.

Another reason, and I say this with all the love in my heart, is that because LU has become so intrinsically linked with the hero titles (ie the game names), some people wanna differentiate by giving their Links different names than Time/Twilight/Wind/etc. Which is totally fine and honestly really fun, but it’s not as immediately identifiable for some as the game names, which can be a barrier. And sure, if you know the lore well enough some are obvious—the one with pink hair is the one from ALttP, the one with a fairy name is probably the OG Link, the one with any sort of body of water referenced is probably Wind Waker—sometimes there are overlaps. Like OoT Link and OG Link could both be called fairy boy. Wind Waker and Link’s Awakening could both be island names. This isn’t insurmountable, but it’s a barrier that LU doesn’t really have.

This ain’t to say other Link Meets AUs aren’t great, cuz they are! I follow a few of them and enjoy them immensely, and several get a lot of engagement! This is just my theory as to why LU has become kinda the Ur example of the Link Meet AU, and why the fandom is so big compared to other options.

🐧 Q: What is this blog about? This blog is about Teikoku Team from Inazuma Eleven so I can share my love for them. A mix of an Art Blog focusing on Teikoku and an Ask Blog where you can ask the boys (and Haruna) whatever you want to know! ⚽ Q: What Canon does it follow? This blog follows the Canon of OG and Go, but it's a semi-au since Kidou went back to Teikoku after the FFI tournament and Haruna moved with him. Time to time there’ll be special events with them as High Schoolers with some other characters. 🐧 Q: So, who are the characters I can ask about? First years: Haruna, Narukami and Doumen. Second years: Fudou, Kidou, Sakuma, Genda, Sakiyama, Henmi and Ookusu. Third years: Jimon, Banjou, Gojou, Oono and Ena. [Ookusu and Ena are reserves from Teikoku, but I especially love these two so I decided to add them!] ⚽ Q: But in Ares Jimon, Banjou, Gojou and Oono are the same age as the others. I know, but I can’t see them as second years as they look older, even like adults. As it’s a semi-au they’ll be a year older. Also it’s funnier with more age range. 🐧 Q: Is Kazemaru in this Teikoku? As this follows OG with a little difference, Kazemaru isn’t in Teikoku but in Raimon. ⚽ Q: How many asks can I send? You can send as many as you want! The more the merrier. 🐧 Q: What can I ask? Anything related to Teikoku Gakuen Team, you can ask from one’s favorite color to something deeper like what are their goals in life. The limit is the sky! You can also ask about my opinion about something Teikoku related, although this isn’t so interesting.

⚽ Q: Did I need to ask everyone about something? No, you can send an ask to one character only. 🐧 Q: Can you draw…? Is it Teikoku related? If it’s, then sure! Just ask whatever you want, but be sure that it follows the rules, you can find them below. They’re not a lot but read them, especially if you want something shippy, because I’m not multishipper so I won’t draw anything about a ship I don’t like. But you can ask characters being friends because friendship is magic. ⚽ Q: What are the ships this blog supports? First of all, the main idea of the blog isn’t shipping but sharing my love of Teikoku Team with the World, especially characters that deserve a lot more. The twitter mess has got me thinking about livejournal and fandom platforms in general, so here’s a lot of words that mostly amount to me being old and sad!!

The past couple years I’ve really struggled with the pull to start using twitter because so much fandom activity moved over there, while at the same time being held back by knowing that it would not be a satisfying experience for me. I lurk there a little, and it’s alright in small doses, but it just doesn’t work for the types of fandom posts that I can contribute or that I want to see. And it has increasingly frustrated me how much people post fanart exclusively over there when its formatting is awful for fanart (no archives! no organized tagging system! completely unbrowseable by subject matter or time period! everything disappears in .02 seconds if it even crosses your view at all! WOW SO GREAT. I get that it lets you post porn but that isn’t a big draw for me :/ yeah, I know, what am I even doing on the internet)

My preferred form of fandom is images and graphics and art and long-form commentary and twitter just isn’t made for those things. You can kind of jury-rig it for them I guess (weirdly cropped 2-to-4-image photosets, hmm. great. threaded tweets??? you know there was a time when you could put all your related thoughts into a single post!) but it’s obviously designed for brief little texts and I’m too self-conscious about writing things for that to ever work for me. The way I see it is you can absolutely tweet on tumblr but you cannot make a tumblr post on twitter, and that’s the fundamental disconnect that has prevented me from leaving. I’m not compelled to go to a platform with fewer and worse features. (well, that plus the fact that I no longer have any friends to follow in the way that I followed the crowd from livejournal to tumblr. why bother!!! NOBODY’S LISTENING! —Cassian Andor about posting on social media)

I totally understand people mourning what could be the loss of years of fandom activity on that site, but at the same time its immediacy has always made it appear more fleeting to me anyway. Obviously you can scrounge up old posts if you really dig around, but without archives or functional tags it has never seemed to be a platform that encourages a long lifespan for anything posted there. Which is of course the trade-off for it being so current and of-the-moment, but I also think it’s detrimental to the fandom ecosystem as a whole, and on a personal level I’m too much of a hoarder for that kind of disposability to work for me. I like to keep things in my little treasure trove and continually pore over it with fondness. :(

I also just have too much anxiety, uh, in general, but especially with instantaneous forms of communication, so I get extremely avoidant about anything fast-paced. Chats always made me nervous, I don’t like texting, it all makes me a little too frazzled to do for fun. I was okay with message boards and lj comments because there wasn’t as much expectation of a quick response (and of course there was way more separation of Internet Time when you didn’t have a smartphone on you 24/7. boundaries!!!! never heard of them). A lot of this is purely mental hangups because I’m perfectly capable of communication, but it’s stressful and exhausting and the internet is filled with increasing pressure to never say the wrong thing (which is already a pressure in my head!!) so to add forced brevity and urgency on top of that... it makes me so uncomfortable and it’s such an enormous barrier when the foundation for literally everything is communication. Words are hard!!! I’m not terrible at it but there’s always an excessive amount of deliberation involved and it’s such a difficult thing to grapple with all the time. Constantly, forever. The mortifying ordeal of SELECTING WORDS to make yourself known!!!!!!!

I guess also nothing has ever been as conducive to discussion and replies as lj. Tumblr replies are so limited and reblogging to add your own commentary is a totally different thing. Private messages are there, but there’s no decent mechanism for open back-and-forth conversation. So even while part of me is glad that people might come back here, more activity on my preferred platform doesn’t change the fact that I still feel dissatisfied with the way all of this operates in general. Tumblr is better than twitter, but even tumblr isn’t that great.

To be honest I’ve become so fuckin weird about this stuff that I now essentially use google docs like a private secret livejournal. I type out my thoughts constantly as though I were writing an actual post to share and then I never share it. Which is probably. insane. But in the era of social media all fandom stuff either seems like way too public a forum full of jerks or it’s seen by nobody anyway so why bother. There don’t seem to be comfortable niche spaces anymore, or if there are I never found them, and besides that I’m too shy and too tired to seek them out and work up the energy to interact. So I just talk to myself like a lunatic. It’s super healthy I’m sure!!!!

I also just really miss how I felt on the internet and in fandom spaces when I was younger, making pointless little websites and graphics and posting photographs just because I wanted to. And obviously I still make things because I WANT to, but the act of actually posting to the internet now and the way that others engage with it seems so much more transactional than it used to. I got into making graphics when it was only like a handful of people on a message board sharing things with each other, and it’s wild how much more fulfilling and encouraging it was to have just a few familiar people make comments than it is to get likes and reblogs. A little number ticker on a post is like... that’s it? That’s all there is? It’s so hollow and mechanical.

Sort of the best way I can think of to describe how it feels to me is that it used to be more like being the proprietor of a quaint storefront where you peddled your wares and people could come and go and chat as they please, and now it’s more like tossing one of your wares onto a highway where it gets driven over at 80mph. And certainly that perception is skewed by rose-colored nostalgia about ~the way things used to be~, I’m much older now so I’m sure my temperament has changed a lot too, I slowed down while everything else sped up, time makes fools of us all, etc. But I’ve seen enough people express similar things about the modern internet that I do think maybe it’s not just me.

I don’t know, unless you’ve been following me since livejournal this probably all sounds like nonsense coming from a silent lurker who barely even posts. I’ve always been much more reticent on tumblr because it feels so exposed—the potential for things to spiral way outside of your orbit is both scary and annoying. But I guess I just don’t really know how to participate in fandom anymore in the way it exists now. I don’t have a community and it feels impossible to break back in amongst The Youths. I don’t have the energy to contribute as much as I want to, and then when I do expend the energy it seems like a waste of time because it’s stuff that either goes entirely unseen or it gets silently viewed and disposed of in an infinitesimal fraction of the time it took to put together. So there are these two warring impulses of: this is making you unhappy and you should stop vs. it doesn’t matter if you’re entirely alone when you’re still having fun by yourself with your special interest that you enjoy. And I don’t know how to reconcile the two.
