This is probably going to be controversial take (I mean no harm by it, and its not hate directed at anyone), but the reason Dazai shooting at Akutagawa in Dark Era is so shocking to people is because he did it to a character we've had time to get attached to.

If Dazai had shot/killed/wounded a random subordinate for messing up his plans, it would be in all the PM!Dazai remixes as one of his dark and cool moments. Like when he's repeatedly shooting that guy in fifteen. It's messed up, but it doesn't happen to a character we're attached to, it happens to an enemy, so we swallow Dazai doing it much easier. If Akutagawa had been a random subordinate, people might even say Dazai was right to do it because that subordinate did a dumb thing that led their investigation to a dead end. (This is theoretical example not my opinion, I don't agree with what Dazai did)

I'm not justifying what Dazai did, but it's the framing that makes this so much more "evil" and unforgivable for people than anything else PM!Dazai did. It's stated multiple times Dazai was terrible to his enemies AND his own subordinates. Akutagawa wasn't the exception, he was just the one we care about. (Q too, though I see less talk about that and we're not actually shown what happened to Q)

Yes, it is cruel, no denying that, he hurts Akutagawa to teach him a lesson, that what's the mafia life has taught Dazai is effective. I'd argue though, it's not anymore cruel than what Yosano does to Tanizaki and Kunikida. She literally tortures them, but it's fine because it's played off as a joke and they're healed in the end. When in reality it's Yosano taking out her trauma on her patients and friends, and she's enjoying it. She didn't need her patients to be half dead in the flashbacks, that came after the trauma. She hurts them to discourage them from getting hurt again in the future. (Again, no hate intended, I love Yosano and all her complexities)

Dazai hurt Akutagawa the same way. Except it's never told as a joke. It happens brutally because it is and the show wants you to feel it in those moments. There is plenty brutal things that Dazai does that are played off as not serious. What he does to Ango with the airbag in his car is brutal. Yet its framed as a dark but necessary action, we're supposed to agree with Dazai because it ultimately saves Kyouka and Dazai gets to have some vengeance. It's a framed as a victory over Ango that we're supposed to support.

Chuuya is constantly being brutal in fights. He kills those people in the woods when he goes to retrieve Q and it's not a gentle killing either. He enjoys the fight, he's happy to get his hands dirty, he likes throwing bullets at people. And we accept this because he does it to the "bad guys".

Yet when Chuuya murdered the guards at Meursault, people thought this was out of character for him. It wasn't. These characters simply seemed more like innocent bystanders to the audience so the reality of how vicious Chuuya's actions were, kicked back in.

So many characters do messed up things in BSD, to pin one as irredeemable because of them doesn't make sense when so many characters are guilty of similar actions. People put Oda up on a pedestal just like Dazai does, because he stopped killing and took in some kids, but he was still a murderer, he still shot and maimed people with ease, as long as they were breathing he was fine with hurting them.

Sure, you can certainly say, "I no longer like this character because of their actions." and that's perfectly fine. You have no obligation to like a character, your preferences are perfectly valid. I just don't believe there's meant to be such a thing as irredeemable or truly evil in BSD. Just people who choose to keep hurting others, and those who try to be better than who they once were.

Dazai has hurt literal hundreds of people during his mafia years but that's off screen and to nameless background characters, it's easier to dismiss. The way he treats Akutagawa is a reminder to the audience that all the characters' actions have consequences. That Atsushi's hero was another person's nightmare and that BSD has many characters like this.

Atsushi, Akutagawa and Lucy went to Mondstadt, while you were staying in Annie’s room, with Annie keeping your company. You were not very fond of the idea of staying in safe place, while your friends are facing Teyvat’s monsters. However, you do understand that with your leg you cannot do much to help.

🐯🧥☕ They arrived at Mondstadt at night. It seems that no one was sleeping. Knights and normal citizens were searching for something. Or someone.

They immediately find the reason for all the commotion. There was hundreds of wanted posters with your face on it. In addition, with strange text.

“IMPOSTER AMONG US! Dirty Sinner dared to wear the face of our beloved Creator! By an order of Their Holiness and Blessed Acolytes, capture it! Made them pay for its crimes! Bring it to an Ivory Throne. Alive!”

Trio were shocked. Thousands of questions rushed through their minds.

‘Creator?’ ‘Imposter?’ ‘Sinner?’ ‘Crimes?’

What is happening? It does not make any sense!

Then Lucy noticed something under the main text. Something written in a small font.

You were in danger. A good person was in danger, blamed for something they didn’t do. You, the best person in the world, were in danger.

Lucy, knowing, that both males were close to do something drastic. Dazai’s training were paying off. Lucy herself wanted to let Annie play with few of this “blessed acolytes” (no one would get away with threating her friend), but it wasn’t the right place or time.

Trio left the city unnoticed. On their way, Atsushi took one more poster with him.

You raised your head, looking shocked. The poster fall from your hands, where it was caught by Rashomon's jaws and torn apart.

Albedo took few steps towards trio. And felt it. Warmth.

Warmth, that Albedo could only call as godly, were coming from trio.

Albedo must act fast.

🐯🧥☕It took alchemist multiple attempts to reassure Atsushi, Akutagawa and Lucy to come with him. In his lab on Dragonspine, you finally left Annie's room for the first time in days. Albedo checked your ankle and finally explained, what the whole "Imposter" situation were about.

He also explained, how you can return home.

According to Albedo, Alice was your only hope. Aether and Lumine were loyal to 'Creator'. And Albedo doubt, that they would even let you explain, that you aren't imposter, have no intent to stay here and just want to go home.

But Alice was forced by False Creator to travel from nation to nation, staying on one place for few days, and currently was on her way to Sumeru and, if she suddenly return to Mondstadt, it would be suspicious. So, you four could either try to chase after her, or stay in Mondstadt and wait for Alice's return. You were relatively safe, thanks to Lucy.

You four decided to stay in Mondstadt. You still feel bad for staying in safe Annie's room, while Atsushi, Akutagawa and Lucy were facing against Teyvat's monsters. But, once again, others insisted on you staying with Annie.

🐯🧥☕ For a few days, everything was fine. Until "Creator" visited Mondstadt. People were cheering, when her carriage was going through streets of Mondstadt. That's when she noticed Lucy, Akutagawa and Atsushi, who were picking up groceries.

She wasn't native to Teyvat. She knew who they were. And she knew, that you must be near.

Before the end of the day, three more wanted posters were hanging alongside yours.

Before "Creator" could plunge it into Atsushi, you hit her arm with your trusty bat.

You also had no reason not to hurt someone, who was hurting your friends.

During your battle (Atsushi Nakajima, Akutagawa Ryunosuke, Lucy Maud Montgomery and [Y/N] [L/N] against "Creator" and Holly Knights /some troopers from mililith, knights of Favonius and Fatui/) your emotions, your anger reached their peak.

The portal opened under your feet.

💉💰 Mori and Francis were rechecking last messages they got from others. Still, no news about your whereabouts. After quick discussion, both Mori and Francis decided to check the forest again. On their way, they heard loud noise coming from the barn.

And, if the angry looks, that Akutagawa, Atsushi, Lucy and you were casting towards her indicate something, she must have done something horrible.

But it can wait. For now, you four need rest. You can finally stop worrying. You four finally were safe.

BUNGOU STRAY DOGS, CHAPTER 127 THOUGHTS

There are some incredibly interesting parallels in the Akutagawa vs. Atsushi fight, and the standoff between Dosteovsky and Sigma going on this chapter. Especially in regards to how three of them are related to Dazai. Let's look at the parallels and the potential future for these characters under the cut

1. Dazai-san, Dazai-san, Dazai-san!

One of the most interesting parallels in this chapter is the relationship to Dazai that all three of these characters have. Akutagawa who Dazai recruited to the mafia, Atsushi who he recruited to the Detective Agency, and now Sigma who he chose as his item to escape from the prison and it looks like if they get out alive together he will invite to join the agency.

More specifically though, I want to analyze it in terms of Dostoevsky's statement to Sigma. That Dazai preyed upon Sigma's desire for a home, and then waved becoming a member of the detective agency over his head in order to get Sigma to do what he wants.

While it seems to be a pretty transparent ploy on Dostoevsky's part in order to get Sigma to question his alliance with Dazai, after all Sigma has him at gunpoint and apparently cornered. He would say or do anything to get out of the situation, and it's not like Dostoevsky is against manipulating people.

At the same time, I think it's Dos's statement is more along the lines of a half-lie, and half-truth. Dazai is, after all, not someone who goes around adopting orphans out of the goodness of his heart. He's not also someone who's so selfish that he only views people as tools for a larger objective. Dazai's character lies in the nuance between those two extremes.

Which is why I want to say there is a half-truth to Dos's statement. Dazai himself even confirmed this earlier, he had two reasons for recruiting Sigma, the first is that his ability will be useful, and the second is that he knew Do would kill him if he didn't choose Sigma.

The nuance lies there, you can both genuinely want to save or even care about someone, and you can also go so far as manipulate them. In general, my interpretation is that Dazai tries to manipulate people into doing what he thinks is best for them. After all, Sigma needs a place to stay, and the detective agency would be a home and a happy ending for him.

However, dirty methods for a good result doesn't always get the result you intended. Before returning to Sigma I want to briefly talk about the Atsushi and Sigma parallels. Atsushi is clearly set up as a foil to Sigma, Atsushi even goes out of his way and is especially compelled to try to save Sigma while he's falling.

Atsushi at first only saves Sigma because of the page, but then he starts to empathize with him after hearing the utter bleakness of his dying words. At which point he is personally trying to save him, causing Sigma to call him kind. Atsushi obviously also relates to those words, because he's so desperate to have a greater purpose in the world, to be an extraordinary hero rather than a nameless orphan.

Atsushi, Akutagawa, and Sigma are all orphans who have essentially had Dazai sweep into their lives and recruit them into an organization, giving them a home when they previously didn't have one. The detective agency is also, a much healthier environment for Atsushi obviously, because he's in a better place than say Akutagawa who was left behind in the mafia and spent a lot of the beginning of BSD bitter and spiraling because of that.

However, there's a pretty serious downside to the way Dazai recruited both Atsushi and Akutagawa. Akutagawa's strained relationship with Dazai is pretty obvious, so rather than dwell on that let's talk about Atsushi for a second.

Atusshi's extreme indecisiveness has been highlighted this arc over and over again. An Atsushi removed from the detective agency, and more particularly Dazai is constantly struggling to make decisions for himself. I don't believe in this case though, that Atsushi's upbringing in the orphanage is entirely to blame for this.

There are two reasons I would lay the blame for Atsushi's total indecisiveness at Dazai's feet more than anyone else.

First is, Dazai's habit is to manipulate people for their own good, but also to take away decisions from them. Second is when Dazai helps people, it's always with the unwritten implication that they now owe him for his help. Even if he doesn't directly say it, Atsushi obviously believes that he has to EARN his place in the detective agency.

This is Dazai. He nudges them in the direction that he thinks is best for them. Sometimes this takes the form of everyone just following Dazai's plan, because he's the machiavellian scheme r of the group, just Atsushi going where Dazai wants him to go, and fighting who Dazai wants him to fight. Or, like the scenes where Dazai deliberately staged a test to let Kyouka join the agency that would also make her overcome her death wish.

Sometimes, this takes the form of Dazai pitting Atsushi and Akutagawa against each other, two people who might have gotten along a lot earlier and sympathized with each other, if Dazai hadn't made them fight each other because HE THOUGHT that was the best way to make their individual abilities stronger.

Like, yes Akutagawa was in the mafia and murder is a big no-no for Atsushi, but Atsushi was able to sympathize with a murderer like Kyouka from very early on despite being aware of all her crimes. There wasn't really any reason for Atsushi and AKutagawa to fight, until Dazai made one.

However, this isn't to question the morality of Dazai's actions in making people's choices for them, but rather to point out the results. There's a reason that every. single. time. Atsushi cannot make a decision for himself he pictures Dazai suddenly showing up and telling him the answer.

By positioning himself as Atsushi's savior, and even giving Atsushi a home, Dazai's basically put himself in a position where number one Atsushi believes in a pretty idealized version of Dazai, and number Atsushi thinks he OWES Dazai. These things make Atsushi pretty obedient to Dazai in general. There's a reason that in Beast which is the darkest timeline for Atsushi, Atsushi is so paralyzingly afraid of making his own decisions he has a mental breakdown unless Dazai gives him orders to follow. He literally wears a collar that Dazai gave him.

Now, for Atsushi in the main story, aren't we witnessing him go through something similiar? Sure, he's not massacring people and breaking down in tears like White Reaper Atsushi, but every time someone throws up a roadblock on his path he literally begs Dazai to show up, and when he doesn't he imagines Dazai magically telling him what to do.

All of these subtle manipulations have made Atsushi pretty obedient to Dazai, and also, doubtful of his stability in the detective agency and left with the idea he has to earn his keep. Now in an arc where Atsushi is separted from the detective agency for a long time now, and also separated from Dazai and unable to follow his plans we are watching him continually choke underneath the pressure.

Which is where we get the results of Dazai's dirtier methods, Dazai isn't really raising Atsushi into a strong, independent adult, he's making Atsushi into a tool. I don't think his intentions are fully to use Atsushi as a tool, but rather his methods end up with that result.

There's a difference between the way Dazai takes in orphans, and the way Oda does. He says as much in Dark era.

"I have this friend who's supporting several orphans all on his own, you see," he continued his weapon still drawn and aimed at the boy. "Akutagawa, I'm sure Odadsaku would've been patient enough to give you the guideance you needed had he been the oe who found you on the brink of starvation in the slums. That would've been the "right" thing to do. But "righteousness" doesn't sit kindly to me. And there's only one thing that people like me do to useless subordinates."

Obviously, Dazai's undergone character development since then, but just compare the orphans Dazai takes in to the ones that Oda does. Oda's orphans don't have any special abilities or talents, they're just kids that he raises and supports with money. Atsushi, Akutagawa, and even Sigma all have an ability that benefits Dazai in some way.

In fact, in the AU where Oda does take Akutagawa in, despite having an incredibly overpowered ability, Akutagawa doesn't get to join the agency until he's undergone personal development and spent time with every single member to learn how to be a better person first.

Which is what Akutagawa needs, he's constantly stuck in survival mode and believes everything is a vicious battle for his life, much like Atsushi he's never been allowed to be a normal kid for a single second in his life. Beast allows Akutagawa to develop as a person rather than a Beast fighting to survive.

Dazai skips a pretty important step in their personal growth for all three of them, focusing more into shaping what he needs them to be for a greater mission.

Atsushi's still working to earn someone else's praise, Akutagawa's still ready to die for Dazai's sake because he believes that will give his life meaning, Sigma is still desperate to do anything that will give him a home. Mori, of all people in the Beast Epilogue, points out that this is the wrong way to raise a child, because you don't raise a child to be what YOU WANT THEM TO BE. You raise them so they can grow up and figure out what THEY WANT TO BE, and grow into their own person.

To give Dazai the benefit of the doubt, he's probably not doing this intentionally, but the result of it is that both Akutagawa and Atsushi are very, very compliant with his orders. After all, if they were like, free thinking adults they might disagree with him or tell him no.

Which is why while it is a good thing for Sigma to join the detective agency, and is probably the best ending for him, at the same time Dazai just dangling joining the detective agency out there to Sigma as bait to get him to do what he wants is not starting out on the right foot.

Because Dazai doesn't save people out of the goodness of his heart, he takes people in and then they owe him something back. Which is what Dos is trying to get at when undermining Sigma.

The detective agency is a much better place for Sigma, but if Sigma joins the detective agency because he think he owes Dazai, or the agency something for giving him a home, it's essentially a repeat of the way that Dos used him. Atsushi has the same desperation to continually prove himself to the agency, as Sigma once did to try to protect the casino.

2. SAVE ME!

Now to finally focus on the Sigma and Akutagawa parallels, both Akutagawa and Sigma are characters who are most likely going to finish their arcs by joining the detective agency. They are also both orphans who need to be saved.

A particularly strong parallel between the two of them is that they were both initially taken into a harmful organization, only because of their ability. Akutagawa is a starving child in the slums, but he so happened to be born with an insanely strong ability to turn his clothing into weapons which causes Dazai to fish him out of the slums and bring him into the mafia which is his current "home" so to speak. Though, a home where he has to earn his keep and is considered disposable if he's not useful.

Sigma was literally created by the book, and then found, and given a place to call home by Dostoevsky, implicitly because his ability was useful. He also once agan, put Sigma into a position where he had to earn his keep. He took advantage of the fact Sigma came from nothing and had no home, and was terrified of going back to having nothing to make him willing to risk his life and everything else to defend the sky casino.

They are both deceived into thinking they have been saved or taken in, when really they are still fighting for their own survival. It's what stunts their growth so much as people, if you're continually in survival mode, and completely insecure in your living situation and attachment to other people then how are you supposed to grow and develop as a person?

They are also essentially people who come from "nothing" though the nothing is poverty in Akutagawa's case, they're also people who were victimized by crimminal organizations, Sigma by human traffickers, and Atsushi by the port Mafia, until they were rescued by their not-so-benevolent "saviors."

They are also, both in a way resigned to their own deaths. Sigma accepts falling off of the casino to his death, and thanks Atsushi for simply TRYING to save him (please get higher standards Sigma). Akutagawa's accepted that he's going to die soon for his illness, so he's willing to put everythig on the line in a final gambit to pass Dazai's "TEST" and then make Dazai's promise that he will give meaning to Akutagawa's death.

Sigma: I never understood what I was born for.

Akutagawa: I want you to find a reason.. a meaning to my life."

They're also looking for someone else to give them the answer to themeaning of their life, and the person who promises that they feel indebted to. Sigma is of course, a little more aware than Dos is using him than Akutagawa is towards Dazai, but they both end up ultimately doing what Dos and Dazai wants them to do.

They've been taken in by someone, but they haven't been saved, which is why both of them are so easily resigned to their death. This is also where Atsushi comes in for both characters. Yes, it's Atsushi's bad habit to play hero. He saves people because he wants someone to protect, because protecting someone makes him feel like he's needed and worthy to live.

However, while Atsushi may have self-interested reasons for saving people that he doesn't seem fully aware of yet, I also believe he's more capable of relating to their personal feelings as a fellow victim than Dazai is. The moments when Atsushi truly saves someone is when he relates to them, when he exposes his own scarring and vulnerability to them in a way of saying "Hey, I'm suffering through this too that's why I want to help you."

That's why say, Atsushi's bond with Lucy just feels more natural and less codependent than his bond does with Kyouka. Atsushi didn't start with Lucy by thinking (Hey, if I protect her does that mean I'm a good boy and earn good boy points???) Also, Atsushi explicitly did not show up and save Lucy despite the fact he promised to. Because his moment of saving her wasn't showing up as a hero and rescuing her as a damsel, but relating to her feelings.

Atsushi also explicitly fails at saving Sigma. He goes the extra mile to try to save him, but Sigma falls anyway. Yet, Sigma remarks that Atsushi is kind because he empathized with the part of Sigma that believes he didn't mean anything to anyone in the world and was ultimately disposable. Which shows underneath this big hero persona that Atsushi puts on, he is genuinely someone who wants to help people who are lonely and scared just like he is.

So, Atsushi's approach to saving both Akutagwa and Sigma is different from Dazai's approach. I'm not going to say because Atsushi is more empathic and Dazai is low-empathy that Atsushi is a better person.

No, I think it's more like Atsushi tries to approach them as equals. At least, when he doesn't see them as a damsel in distress to earn good boy points, Atsushi is capable of exposing a part of himself to these people and showing them they're not alone in their suffering. Dazai is so distant to other people, he doesn't know how to relate to them on their level. Which is why he always takes control in the relationship.

Which is where we get to this chapter, Dazai isn't Akutagawa's savior. Atsushi is. This is the great narrative challenge that has been set up for Atsushi.

Atsushi and Sigma are both stuck in a situation where someone they don't udnerstand has just selflessly tried to save them for reasons they don't understand. (I won't dwell on this too long, but I think Dazai was genuinely willing to risk his life and put Sigma's life above his own, not just because Sigma's useful to the detective agency but because he's an innocent).

Atsushi doesn't understand why Akutagawa would selflessly sacrifice himself to save Atsushi. Partially, because Atsushi has been trained to see the bad in Akuatagawa rather than the good in him (hello there, Dazai).

However, on top of that I think geuniely Atsushi doesn't really understand that someone would go out of their way to save him without asking him something in return. It's not just the selfless action coming from Akutagawa that baffles him, but the selflessness of the action itself.

As for speculating for Akutagawa's reasons for saving Atsushi, I think it goes back to Atsushi's reasons for helping Lucy, there's something similiar about the wounds they've suffered in the past and Akutagawa sees that in Atsushi and relates to his pain. A lot of the attempts to connect have been on Akutagawa's part.

He comforted Atsushi the day that the orphanage headmaster died. When Atsushi challenges him not to kill people, Akutagawa genuinely keeps his end of the bargain. Akutagawa does attempt to take care of the people he sees himself in in his own way, he did it for Kyouka in a twisted way, and was genuinely happy for her when he saw she no longer wanted to die.

Atsushi tells Lucy that just letting innocent people in the street die as a part of the guild's plan, would be the same as letting the childhood versions of themselves die. It'd be repeating what was done to them. Atsushi, Akutagawa, Lucy they've all been wounded because the people in their lives who were supposed to take care of them didn't. Now, despite those wounds, all three also attempt to reach out and take care of others, because they know what being abandoned is like.

Akutagawa probably just saved Atsushi because he relates to him, coupled on top of the fact that Akutagawa knew he was going to die soon, so if one of them was going to live might as well be the one who has a life to live and a chance at happiness.

Akutagawa has also, due to the vampire's power in him, basically become a dark and twisted version of what Dazai intended him to be. Dazai scouted him for his ability, and then made his ability strong without really caring about who Akutagawa was or what his needs were as a person.

He also made Akutagawa into someone willing to die to earn his praise. Now we have Akutagawa as a literal undead zombie, that just violently attacks everything near him. He doesn't even bother to defend himself, just like Akutagawa has no regard for his own life. He just attacks, regenerates, and attacks, he's a living weapon of violence. He's a mindless zombie too, just like in his previous life he was pretty obedient to Dazai's orders.

Which is exactly the narrative challenge that is being set up here for Atsushi. Akutagawa saved Atsushi because he saw something of himself in him, but also because he believed he was going to die anyway and he was less worthy of salvation. Now it is time for Atsushi to return the favor to Akutagawa. Akutagawa won't save himself, and he won't get better with outside help, so he needs someone else to convince him that there's more to life than what he's currently seeing.

It's a narrative challenge especially because killing him would be the easier option here, Akutagawa is already dead technically, and a mindless zombie that will keep attacking everyone around him until someone puts a bullet in his brain, and then another one to double tap.

Yet, Atsushi isn't doing that. He doesn't even considering it an option. He jumps straight to trying to reason with Akutagawa even in mindless zombie mode. It's already been hinted last chapter that Akutagawa might still be in there because he didn't immediately go after Bram Stoker. Now, not only does Atsushi believe that he can reach Akuatagawa, he's actively trying to reach out for him.

Which really is just tremendous character growth on Atsushi's part. He's finally learning to see Akutagawa as a person and trying to reach that person. To do otherwise would be to abandon the child he used to be.

-He does smirk and tease you, asking if you wore it especially for him, and chuckles at your flustered form. Chuuya’s quite chill about the whole thing, probably even comments on how well the lingerie suits you

-‘That colour looks gorgeous on you, but I bet you’d look better in red. And the material doesn’t seem too comfortable either. -I know a lot of people think that his initial reaction would be embarrassed and flushed, but I think he actually wouldn’t really know what lingerie is. Growing up, he probably doesn’t know a lot about the ‘dirty stuff’, so Atsushi might just say ‘Y/N! Won’t you get cold wearing that? I can get some warmer clothes for you if you want!’ While you die of embarrassment

-Atsushi might just be slightly embarrassed by your reaction because he thinks that he’s walked in on you changing. He immediately apologises and heads out, internally berating himself to knock next time

-I feel like he wouldn’t really get why you were embarrassed, because what was wrong with showing a bit too much skin in private? While he might not have had the best past, he does have a mostly clean mind so he wouldn’t know why you were flustered

-When you explain why you were embarrassed, he just scoffs. Wearing lingerie was apparently an excuse to be able to do the dirty just because it showed a bit too much skin? He finds it foolish, and just tells you that you could wear anything you want, as long as it isn’t inappropriate in public

-Akutagawa does ask why you were wearing it though, because as we know he secretly feels vulnerable when he’s not wearing as many clothes since his ability depends on his clothing. When you explain it to him that you were trying it on, he just nods and continues with his day

-He also has a clean mind when it comes to these stuff, so it’s up to you if you want to educate him about it. Akutagawa might not get it at first, but he’s a fast learner. However he always asks for your consent because he doesn’t want to hurt you

-Might even research about which lingerie is the most comfortable and the best. Afterall, if you were going to wear something, might as well ensure that it is good quality. Gin once saw him searching about it and she was so confused lmao

Your boyfriend Akutagawa rarely gives you any physical affection because he isn't the type of person to do so. But he always showers you with gifts and other things to make you feel loved by him. He does love you and so do you.

Tonight he came back earlier. You were at the kitchen cooking food when he comes home. But unexpectedly he came home earlier than expected. You hear a click on the door, you were gonna check but Akutagawa swiftly hugged you. That was... unexpected.. but you liked it.. no you loved it.

"Aku? Welcome back.." You greeted him with a warm smile. Akutagawa felt his stomach twist in a good way.. he yearned for that smile after an exhausting day. He gave you a kisses on your neck,forehead,cheeks and his favourite place.. your lips. Unexpected..

"Lets rest early.." He said as he cling onto you and hugging you tightly.

"Ofcourse.. But we should eat first." He gave you a soft whine.. How you find it adorable.. is he actually a port mafia member? He was but in your eyes he's your loving boyfriend.

Akutagawa doesn't seem planning on letting you go. Oh dear. What is happening.. Did he drink or eat something weird?. You thought. "Aku.. i need to prepare the table so we can eat.. wait on the table please.." You said while giggling a little.. He doesn't let go.

"I will help you" He said burying his face on the crook of your neck. He used his ability Rashōmon, placed the plates and food on the table.. He didn't let you move one bit.. Unexpected..

You both eat quietly but instead of him sitting across the table he sat next so close to you.. basically invading your space... You find it cute.

After you both eat he quickly put the dirty plates on the sink and hugged you in his arms and dragged you towards you shared bedroom. You chuckled slightly by his unusual behaviour.

He took off his coat and placed you on the bed giving you butterflies in your stomach. He lay beside you quietly tracing circle in your back.

"Y/n," He said softly. "My day off is tomorrow.. i want to spend more time with you.. may i?" Did he need to ask for permission for that? You thought.

"Of course." You smiled warmly.

"Can.. I kiss you?" He said while blushing ear to ear. "You don't need to ask my dear.." You both kissed gently.. Akutagawa was scared of being rough with you. He hugged you tightly.. clinging onto you blushing furiously.

"You seem clingy today.." You kissed his forehead. He gave you a soft whimper.. You chuckled..

"I missed you too much than usual.." He said as he caressed your waist. "Goodnight my dear.." He buried his face on the crook of you neck and kiss your neck softly. "Goodnight Aku and i love you.."

Akutagawa woke not in the medical ward of the Port Mafia, but in a bed of blankets on the floor.

He sluggishly registered the white, cracked ceiling, the faint, persistent smell of mildew, the way his back hurt from lying on the hard floor.

He noted the tight feeling of bandages around his chest.

He blinked once at a fan in a back corner of the room, cooling the air, and then he bolted upright.

He regretted it immediately, but it was a minor concern. He was in an unfinished bathroom. It looked like an attempt had been made to convert it into a closet, leaving it as an amalgamation between the two.

He could count the amount of people who would’ve helped him outside the Port Mafia on one hand. In fact, he only needed one finger.

His cloak hung above him, either freshly washed or patted off. A white T-shirt was folded on the floor.

He admitted to himself that his shirt was rather… dirty, to put it lightly. He changed begrudgingly and finally ventured out to face his ridiculous ex-partner.

Nobu sat in front of a small, terribly sad looking TV next to the door. The apartment was small and cramped, but he knew (unfortunately) that Nobu never cared much beyond practicality.

Akutagawa glanced out a small window and couldn’t help but wonder if Dazai lived nearby. He couldn’t see another reason why Nobu would live here.

He heard a rustle, and Nobu was pushing a takeout bag towards him.

Akutagawa didn’t move. “You know what I did,” he said. It wasn’t a question.

Nobu turned to look at him.

“Why were you there? If your ‘co-workers’ knew, I’m sure their plan wouldn’t have been just to run.”

Nobu opened the bag and put a carton down close to him. He moved a second to his lap. “Dazai told me you would be there.”

Akutagawa felt a flicker of something he furiously tried to stamp out. “He told you to help me?” he asked skeptically.

“No.”

He waited, but Nobu only lifted his eyes to the untouched carton and waited as well.

Akutagawa sat with a grumble and rummaged around in the bag for chopsticks.

“I wasn’t going to. I shouldn’t have,” Nobu admitted, twirling spicy noodles around his own chopsticks. “They don’t know you’re here. It’s been thirty-eight hours.”

Akutagawa froze. “Would I be wrong to assume you didn’t go see Gin while I was… incapacitated?”

Nobu dropped the mass in his mouth. “I went. She wasn’t at your place.”

Akutagawa swallowed a steamed mushroom. It went down like sandpaper. He expected it. It meant Gin was with the Port Mafia, and while that was normally the case, it was also likely that she thought he was dead or captured or worse.

He looked at his ex-partner.

The Armed Detective Agency had changed him in small, subtle ways. There was little the Nobu he knew cared about outside of Dazai’s approval. They had worked well together because of that common interest.

It was also why Nobu left. Without Dazai he had no reason to be in the Port Mafia, so he followed him.

Akutagawa, unlike him, couldn’t have just left. He still had Gin, and the position he’d cultivated within the Port Mafia allowed him to live as he pleased outside of the rules of society. The only way Dazai could've stopped Nobu from following him was to kill him, so he had to expunge his record too. But unlike him, Nobu didn’t see himself as irredeemable.

The Nobu he knew hadn’t seen himself as anything at all but a vessel for Dazai's will. That Nobu wouldn’t have gone to seek out Gin simply because it didn't matter to Dazai and so didn't matter to him.

His time at the Armed Detective Agency had changed him, and it made him reconsider what he thought he knew about Nobu.

“Did that woman die?” Akutagawa asked. His memory before his body gave out on him was blurry toward the end, but he remembered impaling her.

He remembered Kunikida watching him do it, because the non-lethal approach they took was a double-edged sword. If Kunikida had fought him with the intent to kill, he would've never had the chance.

If that woman survived, he’d have to find her and finish the job regardless of whether she already told the Armed Detective Agency, and by extension the police, what she knew.

Nobu chewed on half of a hard-boiled egg, drowned in broth. “Yes,” he eventually said.

“There’s more,” Akutagawa prompted. He ate a slice of beef and wiped his mouth with a napkin.

“There’s always more,” Nobu muttered, twirling noodles.

“Don’t make me ask.”

Nobu grabbed the remote with his free hand and clicked on the play button. Despite what the TV looked like, a small, sleek cable box was on the floor next to it. Nobu didn’t turn around to watch it. Akutagawa lifted his eyes to it.

“…more details are still emerging about the murder of the Honored Hanegawa Ritsu. According to new reports, he was found unresponsive late in the afternoon and was later determined to have died of a lethal toxin—"

Nobu clicked off the TV.

Akutagawa didn’t know the name, but the picture of the dead man shown beside the reporter made his eyes narrow.

It was the man who had hired them for the job in exchange for a favor to the boss. Akutagawa had guessed he was some corrupt minor politician, and he’d been partially right that he was a politician, but the scrolling text beneath the reporter showed that he turned out to be a vice governor.

The timing of that death and that of his target was too convenient to ignore.

“Such an annoying job,” Akutagawa said. The whole situation had become needlessly complicated, especially when no one in the Port Mafia knew where he was.

It was possible that the boss had done it to clean up a loose end, but if it hadn’t been him, then the Port Mafia had been used or framed or both. And how did the Armed Detective Agency fit into this?

To make them look incompetent?

“The Armed Detective Agency was put on the case,” Nobu said. “They got past his security with an Ability.”

“Tedious,” Akutagawa said, eating another beef slice. It was cold.

“They won’t let you go next time.”

“Cute.”

Nobu swallowed noodles. “I hope I don’t see you when I’m with them,” he said to himself.

His detective allies would no doubt expect him to help in a fight, and the only way Nobu could in any way that was effective would be to cut his strings to his Ability.

If his memories of Rashomon were cut, he’d have no more use to the Port Mafia. He’d be cast aside until he re-learned his own Ability

A quiet terror gripped Akutagawa at the thought.

Even if he did reclaim his place, Nobu could just do it again with any new memories he formed, cutting his strings like his mind was a koto.

His noodles lacked any taste as he swallowed them down.

Nobu stared at him, the edge of his chopsticks paused over the carton. “Do you think I would do that?” he asked, his expression suddenly unreadable.

And yet, his ex-partner had read him easily, as if his thoughts were words on his face.

Akutagawa lowered his chopsticks and met Nobu’s stare without blinking. “If Dazai told you too.”

Nobu looked away first. He picked up the carton and drained the broth, tilting his head back as he drank it all.

Akutagawa took the last beef slice between his fingers and ate it. He put the carton aside.

Nobu grabbed it and drank that one too.

Akutagawa leaned forward, elbows on his knees. “Would you?”

Nobu picked up a chopstick, scraped at the bottom, and didn’t answer.

That, too, made him different. The Nobu he knew would’ve said yes immediately.

“Still ridiculous,” Akutagawa thought aloud.

“How long are you staying?”

Akutagawa touched the bandages around his chest and it hurt. His body told him two or three days.

He glanced at the darkening sky out the window. “Until the morning,” he answered.

“No one will recognize you if you leave in that,” Nobu said, nodding at the borrowed shirt.

Akutagawa scoffed at the very idea. “I’d rather die.”

Nobu looked unsurprised. “Then leave before the sun rises and take the back alley.”

Akutagawa shook his head. “If you get caught, it’ll be because of your own stupidity. Not me.”

Nobu smiled faintly and gathered up the cartons. “There’s more beef slices in the fridge.”

Akutagawa stared at his back. “Sometimes I think you plan this.”

Nobu dumped the cartons in the trash and didn’t respond.

you cant imagine how exited i am for retribution to end up at around 240k words, THE racing au to me, are there any headcanons/ideas for it that you have that ultimately wont fit into the story? i honestly love hearing you talk abt this series

good thing because i really love talking about it !! i typically don't tho unless it's like. prompted. bc there's just so much that i don't know what to talk about lmao.

but there are plenty of headcanons/ideas that ultimately are not gonna make the cut !

the most blatant - the addition of the hunting dogs as an actual entity, and tachihara being an undercover agent. i toyed with it for a long while, and i think he did a stint at the police academy, but ultimately it didn't fit for this storyline and i don't want it to. instead, he's a full time mechanic at the black lizard works, with no double life. tecchou is ex-military, and jouno is a former racer who retired due to medical reasons unrelated to racing.

i won't say it all got dumbed down, but a lot of atsushi's snark had to get taken out because it wouldn't make sense when he's still learning about his craft; it'd be like me walking into an astrophysics meeting and then bitching about how they talk about something i have not a faintest idea about.

the doa! the doa make disjointed cameos, i'd say, and i haven't quite found the place for fyodor yet, but wherever it is, i don't think it's with a home in the portside. perhaps in the framework of the circuit's imports and exports, but i don't know. sigma turns the betting stand, as you know (and they are trying their best!), nikolai shows up to the portside every once in a while, and fukichi is... i don't know where; same with bram.

fukuzawa and mori's past! it's going to get its bit and pieces, esp in the crash course of parenting, since they have to interact, but as of right now it's not something that you, as an audience, get to be super privy to.

partyboy tanizaki wasn't actually supposed to be canon in retribution but then he was in eyeliner and glitter and acting Like That. so. he decided it was going to be canon.

akutagawa's dog! i think he has a dog named rashoumon at home (in the penthouse he has from the dirty racing money) which is like the ultimate fuck-you to the cops always on his tail, because he has a fucking dog named after his alias, but they have no definitive proof it's him. i'd love to make said dog canon, but realistically, with it being a penthouse and gin + aku always being busy, they wouldn't have the time for a dog.

initially, gin was not supposed to be important in the series, i guess? like, she was there, but not really a moving part of it. the fact that she is an important part of the story and one of the two racers that use motorcycles on touge tracks came as a call-back and reference to my all-time favorite fic ever called "darkness, chase the day" by @soysaurus, which was a tachigin racing fic that i still think abt all of the time. not only did it help inspire retribution, but it's the reason gin has such a prominent role in retribution.

speaking of gin, things that got scrapped from the story: the origin behind gin's alias! the alias i gave her is "burnstrike", which is a call-back to a different fandom i was in (much like atsushi's jacket is a call-back to a different fandom as well). the in-universe origins behind the name "burnstrike" are unclear, though i will tell you it does have to do with targeted arson on gin's end.

Atsushi and his relationship with his enemies

Ft. Kyouka, Lucy, and Akutagawa

One thing I noticed about Atsushi is that he often takes pity on his enemies and tries to understand them, particularly Kyouka and Lucy. However, he seems to resent Akutagawa and not only because he chopped off his leg. So I wondered, how does Atsushi perceive his enemies, really? How does he decide whether a villain is worth helping and deserves forgiveness or not?

1. Atsushi and Kyouka

Atsushi’s desire to save a villain was particularly shown in his relationship with Kyouka. As we know, they first met in a train that’s about to explode. They fight, blabla, Atsushi gets his ass kicked by demon snow, yet he stil has the instict to ask Kyouka why she's doing this - he wants to know why such a young girl was doing the PM's dirty work.

Look at his reaction to Kyouka revealing that she was an orphan like him. His expression is unreadable — it might’ve been surprise or pity, but one thing’s for sure — his perception of Kyouka changed at this moment. But he didn’t have the desire to save her yet, especially after she said this in the next panels :

For someone who just killed 35 people, including a family with a young boy, Kyouka didn’t show any sort of remorse. As you can see in Atsushi’s expression, if there was any form of pity in his eyes in the previous panels, it was gone now. His expression was something more like… “Really? How could you do this? Pathetic.” Something that he would feel towards someone as ruthless as Akutagawa. But then, his perception of her changes again when this scene happens :

At this point, he finally noticed that Kyouka had no control over her own ability, that she had been killing people against her own will. And this reminded him of… himself.

Before joining the ADA, Atsushi was labeled the “man-eating tiger” (although the poor hungry boy prolly only destroyed the orphanage kitchen to eat the chazuke stash there 😭😭) He knows how it feels to have an uncontrollable ability that can only harm people. And he feels pity for Kyouka, who had a similar experience as him, yet was taken into the PM instead and suffered much more than him. This is when he feels the obligation to save her.

When Kyouka willingly jumped out of the train to sacrifice herself for the sake of the passengers, Atsushi didn't care about the 35 people she killed anymore — his mind saw the situation from another perspective : “So what if she killed 35 people? She didn’t want to do it. She had an ability that she couldn’t control, just like me. She’s innocent. She doesn’t deserve to die.”

2. Atsushi and Lucy

Lucy’s situation is very different. Unlike Kyouka, this woman was UNHINGED. She enjoyed toying with people, taking hostages while claiming that it was a “fun game”. She had perfect control over her own ability, and she had a choice to not use it to hurt other people.

So, why did Atsushi pity her?

The same reason as Kyouka.

She revealed that she used to grow up in an orphanage, was tortured by the adults in the orphanage and finally driven out because of her ability. Does this backstory ring a bell? Yep, Atsushi used to endure the same pain as her. Lucy also reminded him of himself in the past.

She was raised the same as Atsushi, but instead of being taken in by kind people like the ADA who would genuinely care for her, Lucy was recruited by the Guild — who only saw value in her ability and wouldn’t hesitate to discard her if she failed any missions. While Atsushi could now enjoy living in the light and a new home, Lucy was still trapped in her ordeal, under the risk of being abandoned if she made just one wrong move.

Atsushi must have thought something along the lines of : "We are so alike, but why did she have to be forced to do bad things like this? It’s unfair. She wouldn’t have been this terrible if she was recruited by the ADA like me, so she deserves a second chance."

Unlike Kyouka, Atsushi couldn’t save Lucy at this time. But he still pities her, still trying to understand her point of view despite after seeing her take pleasure in hurting people. He still believes that Lucy could be a good person if she would just be given a chance to be one, because she reminds him of himself.

3. Atsushi and Akutagawa

Since we’re talking about similarities, these two gay mfs should be the one with the most similarities. They were both orphans without a home. They were both at the brink of death before being found by Dazai, taken in and trained by him. They both look up to Dazai. They both see no value in their lives and are desperately fighting to earn the right to live.

If Atsushi would just see Aku the way he saw Kyouka and Lucy — a similar version of him that got worse luck and were recruited by bad people — wouldn’t that make him see himself in Aku too?

So why doesn't he feel bad that Aku was the one being abandoned by Dazai? Why doesn't he pity Aku for being taken in by the pm instead of the Ada? Why doesn't he have any desire to save Aku and bring him into the light, just like what he did to Kyouka and Lucy?

IGHT *rolls up sleeves* here’s my analysis. Look at this scene in s2 when Atsushi attacked Naomi and Haruno under Q’s curse :

Doesn’t Atsushi seem… terrifying here? He seems like someone who’s proud of his power and using it to hurt people. Someone like Akutagawa.

Then, look at his reaction to realizing that he attacked Naomi and Haruno.

Poor boy seems so traumatized and terrified — it's as if he had just killed someone, and that wasn't the case at all. It wasn’t even his fault?? 😭😭 It was all because of Q’s curse. Atsushi technically did nothing wrong here. Besides, Naomi and Haruno weren’t even gravely injured. He could have just got up, apologized a hundred times Atsushi style, and carried on with his life, BUT NOO, he has too much trauma and decided to hallucinate about the orphanage director again 💀💀

At first, I thought that this scene was a mere flashback which held no meaning, but my dumbass only realized now this isn't a flashback at all. The hallucination of his orphanage director was the manifestation of his own subconscious, asking himself : “How are you any different?”

“How are you any different from Akutagawa?”

“Drunk with power, you proceed to hurt others.”

Doesn’t this sentence feel like he’s describing Aku?

After listening to the orphanage director describe him as someone similar to Aku, he loses his mind.

Look at him — he’s trying so hard to convince himself that he’s not Akutagawa.

He wants to be the opposite of Aku so bad, to be the one to protect people instead of hurting them, to use his ability only for good and for nothing else.

He’s so terrified that he’ll turn into someone like Akutagawa.

As if this isn’t enough, a hallucination of the emo gothic vampire himself appears.

“Now you understand, don’t you? What you really are.”

At first, I thought it was Aku implying that Atsushi was a monster. However, it can also mean something like :

“Now you understand, don’t you? What you really are. You’re just like me.”

With Kyouka and Lucy, he sees himself in them. But with Aku, it’s different. He sees Akutagawa in himself. With his dangerous ability, he thinks he has a monster inside himself, a monster that can lose control and hurt people just like Aku. He has a feeling that deep down, he also possessed all of Aku’s worst qualities that he feared so much.

He’s so obsessed with being a completely good person that he decided to project all of his bad qualities on Aku, view him as a monster, and then do everything in his power to become the complete opposite of him. He uses Aku as a tool to raise his self esteem and convince himself that he deserves to live. It's like he's always repeating in his head : "It's okay. I might be useless, I might cause trouble sometimes, but at least I'm not a monster like Akutagawa."

The thing is, Aku was never a monster. He's just... human. Someone very similar to Atsushi, who turned up the opposite way just because he had a different upbringing. As we can see from the Beast AU, Aku has every potential to join the ADA, and Atsushi has every potential to turn into a killing machine like Aku.

Atsushi resents Aku because he sees him as the worst version of himself.

He can accept Kyouka and Lucy despite already knowing their crimes and flaws. But with Aku? He will never be able to accept Aku. Not until he learns to accept himself.

"Wasted Potential": Wish we saw more of her and her politics in Mori's PM? She's very protective of Kyouka, yet somehow Kyouka got abused by Akutagawa for so long. There's also a lot we don't know about how the Port Mafia works, hell, we don't even know what Kouyou is in charge of, I'm pretty sure most people just assume. I wanna see her negotiating and Game of Thrones-ing in the Port Mafia, both with and sometimes against Mori, because she totally does both. "If they were real I would be afraid of them": Um. Yeah.

"Didn't get enough screen time": Like the potential one, except we also have no idea what her backstory is aside from that one lover that tried to help her escape.

Kyouka:

"They are so cool looking": Like Kouyou, Kyouka has a beautiful design, her kimono, her hair, I just love it.

"They got done DIRTY by the fans": There's very few content that centers around her and I think that's a shame. I also would love some future fics where she's a young adult, who she grows into.

"I want to carry them in a handbag like a tiny dog": She. Is. So. Cute.

"They work better as part of a dynamic": Kyouka, Atsushi and Akutagawa are the most baller team up in all of bsd. Kyouka also gets all the braincells when that happens, which is always fun.

"They've never done anything wrong in their life <3": She's a CHILD. They were going to put a child to death for being manipulated by the mafia?? She's a BABY.

SHIN SOUKOKU HOGWARTS AU

Ryuunosuke Akutagawa

Slytherin, but the hat teased that he could also be a good Gryffindor. This resulted into an argument with the hat about how wrong it is.

Akutagawa is ecstatic when he finds that he's in the same house as Dazai

Akutagawa has a black snake named Rashoumon and he's adorable.

He's been nicknamed "Dazai's shadow" and looks too happy to have it.

One of the big mysteries in Hogwarts is whether Akutagawa is a vampire or not (someone even started a betting pool around it)

Akutagawa is a year older than Atsushi, but two years younger than Dazai.

This poor boy gets pushed around by Dazai a lot, and does his homework for him

Akutagawa is a half-blood, but still occupies pureblood supremacy beliefs. He despises how his blood has been tainted with dirty non-magical.

His prejudice against muggles really stemmed from the mistreatment he and his sibling faced in the orphanage before they ran away.

Akutagawa used to hate Chuuya, mostly because of his half-blood status, but now he begrudgingly respects him for his talents (in actuality, he's just envious that Chuuya is so close to Dazai)

His sibling, Gin, is nonbinary and goes in neutral pronouns and gladly lets them burrow his spare male uniform when they want to.

Nakajima Atsushi

Gryffindor. Atsushi freaked out when he heard the Sorting's hat voice and spent the majority of the sorting questioning how the voice in his head got deeper.

Lucy Montgomery, a redhead he met in the train, went into Gryffindor and Izumi Kyouka, a quiet girl that Atsushi asked to sit with in a compartment, went into Slytherin.

Lucy and Kyouka are presidents of the "Protect Atsushi" club.

Atsushi is raised by his muggle uncle. He doesn't know much about his parents other than they died in a car accident.

On his first day, Atsushi finds someone's legs pulled up, body half submerged in the Black Lake. He thought it was a dead body at first, before he noticed that it was still moving. Immediately, he jumped right in.

("Tsk," the weird boy sneers, "Another failed attempt." Atsushi freezes when the boy turns to him, noticing how utterly displeased he looks. He tenses, preparing for a litany of apologies and arms getting ready to guard him from an attack. It doesn't come, and only finds the boy now staring at him with a guarded expression.)

Atsushi later learns the Slytherin's name is Dazai Osamu, and he wasn't going for a swim like he thought.

("Dazai Osamu?" Kyouka's stoic face falters into a darkened gaze. "Don't consort yourself with the likes of him. He's bad news.")

Atsushi doesn't understand Kyouka's warnings. Dazai doesn't seem dangerous.

After that Lake incident, Dazai talks to Atsushi like they've known each other for years. Lucy is confused. Kyouka is glaring at Dazai. A pale boy in the Slytherin table is glaring at Atsushi meanwhile Atsushi? He's just tired.

MORE SHIN SOUKOKU

Look, Atsushi should've known something is wrong the moment Dazai said he'll help Atsushi with his homework. Because the person who arrived isn't Dazai at all.

("What are you doing here?" "I should be the one asking that! Dazai-san said he'll help me with Charms—" "Dazai said that to me too!" There's a long pause, before they realize what was happening.)

Turns out Akutagawa is bad at Charms, but good at Transfiguration. The exact opposite of Atsushi. They made a mutually beneficial agreement that they'll get along for this one day. Just this day.

Of course it didn't happen, because Atsushi and Akutagawa keep getting into situations together that they can't get out. Which Atsushi realises are all orchestrated by Dazai.

Atsushi is a big fan of Chuuya's flying the first time he watched a game. Shyly, he asks Chuuya to teach him and the redhead obliges. Atsushi is rusty, but he's determined to learn.

Atsushi finds out that Akutagawa had a bad childhood, and it doesn't excuse his behavior at all, but he could understand where his hate for muggles came from.

For the record, Akutagawa and Atsushi aren't similar at all. They aren't so shut up, Dazai.

Akutagawa sees the bruises on Atsushi and figures out why Atsushi prefers to stay in Hogwarts at Christmas.

When Atsushi gets an ugly figurine of a tiger with a letter 'it looks like you' under his desk, he doesn't comment on how the handwriting is very similar to someone he knows.

Jinko is now a prominent nickname and Atsushi hates it. He likes it.

Atsushi no longer talks about the time he took the hit of a dangerous spell for Akutagawa in a fight. He ended up in the hospital wing for a week, and he'd never seen the Slytherin so quiet before. It's a sore topic.

Nothing changes between them after the incident. That's what they want to believe.

Atsushi x Reader [Mentioned smut/fluff] Warnings: descriptions of a boner and sex Word Count: 1k

Atsushi was facing a dilemma over how to stop thinking about fucking you. Last week, you guys had sex for the first time and my goodness, it was mind blowing and incredible. He started shaking and trembling at the thought of doing it again with you - and he even started to stare at you during work, nonstop.

Of course, you would glance over to him too, looking a little worried but it still made him blush so hard that Kunikida asked if Atsushi was having trouble breathing. And yes, Atsushi was having trouble breathing because he was too busy admiring you.

Oh, how he imagined everything over again, and much more. He thought about how you cried out his name and tried your best to keep your eyes open to look back at him while he was pounding into you. And then he remembered about how your back arched up and against his body, and he had the confidence to smooth his hand around your back, scratching only slightly.

The way you reacted to everything he did was simply amazing too.

But now he had to stop thinking about it, because he realized that his dick was beginning to pop a boner. Now he had to figure out a way to stop it and make it go away, so he looked away from you and back to his desk.

There was an orange on his desk - it looked old and almost moldy, and he instantly furrowed his eyebrows, and scrunched his nose up. When did that get there? He had no clue, but he continued to stare at it and think about weird things and stuff he was disgusted by.

Mean people - check, he thought back to all those kids who made him an outcast where he grew up.

Soggy socks - check, he began to imagine he was walking into a nasty swamp, or even a questionably old sewage system.

Dirty hairbrushes - check, he hated when hairbrushes were dirty. Ugh, he shuddered at the thought of his own hairbrush being all nasty, filled with gunk and trash. He couldn't put that through his hair.

Akutagawa - double check, he couldn't stand that guy and everything he did.

And then, thankfully, he glanced down, and he was relieved to find that his boner didn't grow anymore. He figured if he went to the bathroom, it would help him a bit, so he excused himself, tugged his shirt down to cover up and rushed over.

Once he was in the bathroom, he let out a long sigh, leaning back against the wall. He was beginning to stress out thinking that if this were to happen every day, he wouldn't be able to hide it.

Then he got a text message. He tugged his phone out slowly, still trying to calm down and instantly, it all came back.

It was a text from you asking if he needed any help. And he eagerly texted you back, saying he did need a lot of help because he could barely control himself thinking about anything else other than you.

You knocked on the door a few minutes later when everyone else was distracted. Atsushi instantly unlocked the door and opened it for you, chuckling a little embarrassed at himself.

"Are you alright? You looked like you were sick out there." Your question was honest, and his eyes widened in surprise, he didn't realize he looked sick. And he didn’t recognize that your text message wasn’t what he thought he meant.

And he looked into the mirror, and yes, you were right. He was all sweaty, red in some parts and pale in other areas of skin, and he was trembling, and he even realized how loud his breathing was.

"I think I'm ok, yeah. I just got distracted, you know. I was thinking about you." He didn't even realize he was flirting because he was only being honest about it, and it made you confused.

"You got sick from thinking about me?" Again, your question was genuine and innocent, and it made Atsushi even more stressed, as he thought that maybe admitting that he popped half a boner from thinking about having sex with you wasn't the greatest thing to do.

"Not in the way you're thinking!" He blurted and you let out a small laugh, shaking your head, still confused.

"In what way though?" You asked, leaning in to check his temperature through putting your hand on his forehead. He was super warm, and you pouted, worried for him.

"You know..." He trailed off, now focusing on your bottom lip. He was started to freak himself out. Should he continue to look at your lips and then be reminded about having sex with you again? Or should he go back to thinking about that moldy old orange on his desk and Akutagawa?

Instead, he glanced down and sighed, not knowing what to do. Your eyes followed to where he was looking too and you gasped, realizing what he meant. Now you finally got it, and he felt a bit more relieved.

"Oh shit, babe. I'm sorry didn't notice that. I just thought you weren't feeling good or something." You spoke up, almost covering your mouth as a laugh tumbled out.

"Don't laugh at it please, you're just super-hot and awesome, and we had sex and I just started to think," He was cut off by you lifting his head up with your hand.

"No, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to laugh, it just surprised me. But yeah, I get it." You reassured him and slowly you leaned in and kissed his lips gently.

He instantly melted into the kiss, wanting more, but you pulled away. He wanted to swing his arms around you to tug you back, but he stopped himself.

"I'm sorry babe, but we got to get back to work. Maybe we can meet back here during lunch instead?" You asked him and he struggled out a nod, feeling absolutely cockblocked as he glanced down at his boner.

When you walked back out to the office, Atsushi stayed behind, frowning at himself. "How am I supposed to deal with this?" He questioned himself, shaking his head as he realized this was going to be a new normal with you as his girlfriend.
