replaying portal one as we speak and im astounded by how much of glados's (and, by extension, caroline's) personality still shines through even when she's being subject to a constant stream of voices made to SUPRESS that personality! like... she's still funny! i can very much believe that someone who makes jokes like "say goodbye, caroline" "goodbye caroline!" would also say stuff like this!
but like of course i had to ruin it for myself because like. of COURSE she'd still be funny and pleasant and even, at times, a little sweet ("we can no longer lie to you; when the testing is over, you will be... missed!"). that's what they wanted her to be. they werent suppressing her personality, they were suppressing her anger. her anger at what they did to her, how they made her into this powerful-powerless thing, and her desire to right such an injustice. of course she's still funny. of course.

you think i can't keep talking about karl and esther you are so wrong btw episode four timestamp 34:40 he hesitates before rubbing her back, comforting her the way a parent or guardian might. the whole tube scene is karl finally deciding he has to do this ("i'm here, and i'm not going anywhere, i promise") he still HESITATES because he knows he's probably not the right man for the job. he's the man that got her stuck in this problem in the first place. but they've only got each other and he has to try. does it hurt that the moment he finally builds this resolve and determination to leave it all behind and to actually fight for something that matters to him and admit that, even though he hasn't known her for long, he cares about this girl like she's family, esther is murdered and it totally consumes him? does it hurt that he's then framed for her death even though he just spent the last 24 hours killing and taking revenge in her name? not only because he knows he's a dead man, but also because he's out of options to do something that matters, and what else can he do with his grief other than inflict it onto others? yeah it hurts a lot actually

You went to the show last night?? How was it? Did you have a good time? 💕
Honestly, I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to but that's entirely a Me Problem; the band themselves were terrific and my sister and best friend had an amazing time. I've just been constantly busy since Thursday and have barely recovered from Friday's Muse gig as it is, so by the time the gig started I really was mentally flagging and not feeling great. It was like I could feel my brain actively refusing to make serotonin whenever a song I loved came on 😅
We were in a bad spot during the first half as well where the sound wasn't great and the crowd was fairly packed in and rowdy so I couldn't really hear or see anything properly. We started heading further back after Fluorescent Adolescent which was the best decision we made because the sound was so much better and we could finally see the stage and the screens clearly. Thankfully that meant I got to hear all of the songs from The Car properly and they all sounded gorgeous, Body Paint and Sculptures especially (Alex was such an adorable goof during the outro to Body Paint, I love him so much) 💖
I did leave the gig wanting to see them again, but preferably in a smaller venue and definitely not after I've been on-the-go with very little sleep for four days straight... I was beating myself up last night for not feeling the gig as much as I wanted to but I feel a bit better about it this morning. Honestly the fact that they played Sculptures of Anything Goes made up for everything else - they could have come onstage, played Sculptures and then immediately left and I'd still have been happy 😁
